Eileen’s special link to Brendan AMONG the many tributes paid to the late Brendan Grace in the past week was superfan Eileen Power (89) from Wexford who told how the comedy legend made her a star of his show – because she looked like his mother. Eileen, who saw the funnyman in Dun Laoghaire three years ago, said: “He kept saying during the show ‘You’re the image of my mother’. “He said his mother was a Cleary from Wexford and I said, ‘I’m Wexford too!’ I was a bit embarrassed as he was talking to me so much. “After the show he wrote on a DVD, ‘Eileen, you look so much like my mam’. I was so sorry to hear he had died. “I was just about to send a card to hospital for him when I found out. He was a lovely person.” Meanwhile, fans of the comedian were paying respects to the legendary entertainer in their droves at Dublin’s Mansion House at the weekend, when book of condolence for

the 68-year-old was opened by /RUG 0D\RU 3DXO 0F$XOL൵H Many remembered the funnyman for his classic and clean form of comedy, which entertained people across the world. Francis Ross works in the nearby Brooks Hotel, where the Grace family often stays. Frank said he grew up a fan of Brendan, and became a friend in his later years. He said: “He knew me as Frank. Like everybody, I grew up with him in the 70s and he was our idol, visiting our school with the green cross code, and then going to see him in the Gaiety when I was older. “I got to know him as a friend in the last 15 years. It’s a very sad day for us all in the hotel. “Unlike other comedians, he didn’t lean on the same character all the time. I liked them all, but the Bottler is the one that introduced us all to him.” Grace, from Dublin’s Liberties, died aftyer a short battle with cancer. He was buried in the capital on July 15.

Dog owners urged to come clean THE initiative of Maxi Zoo, Ireland’s largest pet retailer, to encourage dog owners to pick up their dogs poop, is running for the month of July and aims to educate the public on the importance of picking up after their dog – a problem in all counties. Maxi Zoo will be giving away 1.5 million degradable poop bags to dog owners both in store and at select regional parks to help keep our parks and streets poop free. They plan to be on site to support dog owners and to
help create more awareness. “This issue really gets conversations goingâ€? said Ciaran O’Neill, Managing Director of Maxi Zoo Ireland. “When we talk about #ScoopThePoop, we hear PDQ\ GLŕľľHUHQW RSLQLRQV on what people should and should not do. “The majority of dog walkers are responsible, but there are still some who claim they would not pick up after their dog if it was in a natural area, such as on grass or in a woodland.

Brilliant Bramble HOROSCOPES
Bramble flowers (Photo Justin Ivory) TO celebrate mid-summer and the schools getting their holidays, mother nature has adorned our hedgerows with a gorgeous display of mainly white and some pink flowers. This wildflower show comes courtesy of the least, likely of suspects – the Bramble (Rubus fructicosus). The normally hard and butch looking Bramble gets to show us its softer side at this time of year. The Bramble is a tenacious, scrambling plant with arching stems armed with vicious thorns, that root to form new plants wherever they touch the ground. Much maligned in some quarters, the Bramble is one of the best plants we have for wildlife and biodiversity and deserves our respect and praise. With its dense, thick nature and prickly defenses, Bramble bushes provide shelter and homes for a variety of mammals (foxes, mice, rats and hedgehogs to name a few), nesting birds and a myriad of invertebrates.
Bumblebee feeding on Bramble flowers (Photo Justin Ivory) The wonderful bramble flowers blooming now are a fantastic source of food to a whole host of pollinators (bees, butterflies, hoverflies). The bushes are veritably humming with activity at the moment. Later on, due to the services of these pollinators, the flowers will become that most wellknown of fruits – blackberries. These fruits provide an important source of energy and food to our wildlife late in the season. Maybe this autumn, rather than stripping the brambles bushes clean of all their lovely blackberries for our own consumption we might consider leaving them in situ for our ever-beleaguered wildlife to avail of. All-in-all the Bramble is a brilliant plant and we could do with much more of it around the place.

FERNS CASTLE Ferns, Co. Wexford Once considered to be the finest Norman castles in Ireland Ferns Castle is one of the finest examples of an Anglo-Norman fortress in Ireland. This was originally the stronghold of Diarmaid McMurrough (11101171) who was the King of Leinster and invited Strongbow and the Normans into Ireland in 1169 to help strengthen and save his collapsing Kingdom. Over its lifetime the castle has been sacked, damaged and modified several times. The Norman chapel inside is the finest of its kind in the country.
