The battering ram’s blast from the past! Tadhg could tackle before he could walk THE word on the street is that Ireland’s front row battering ram Tadhg Furlong learned to tackle before he learned how to walk. The Wexford man has been ever-present in Joe Schmidt’s Ireland squad since 2015, and is known for his intense physicality. It is obvious the Leinster star has been bound to reach the heights he has, an on-going winner both at GAA and rugby when just aged 10. A report in a local newspaper from the early 2000s just about much tells you all you need to know about the 26-year-old. The report, shared by Rugby Players Ireland on Twitter, said: “Tadhg has been playing rugby with New Ross since the tender DJH RI ¿YH :KHQ LW FRPHV WR sport rugby has always been his ¿UVW ORYH ,Q IDFW RQH FRXOG VD\ he learned to tackle before he learned to walk. “Anyone at the receiving end

Our refugee intake lags EU partners A EUROPEAN Commission study reveals from 2016 to 2017, Ireland welcomed just over 5,000 asylum seekers — but this paled in comparison to the 72,500 which arrived into Britain. In 2016, when Germany took in nearly 750,000 nonEU asylum seekers, Britain welcomed just under 40,000 while Ireland took in just 2,300. The European Commission study revealed Germany recorded the largest number of non-EU asylum seekers with just under a million (920,000) coming over its borders in 2016 and 2017. Ireland was near the bottom of the table, with Italy, France, Greece, Spain, Sweden, Austria, Netherlands and Belgium taking in substantially higher numbers.

There are now 13 refugee families based in Wexford town, 12 in New Ross and Enniscorthy and nine in Gorey. Four families have been allocated houses in Rosbercon, New Ross, through Kilkenny County Council. The last two families were given houses in mid-January. Wexford County Council has been one of, if not the, quickest to accommodate the families nationally.

Elecion looms as cumanns merge A NEW cumann in Wexford for Fianna Fail has been set up following the amalgamation of the cumanns in Oylegate and Glenbrien. The meeting to set up the new group took place recently in the Slaney Inn, in Oylegate. There was a big crowd in attendance at the meeting and it was well supported by grass roots members and supporters. Deputy James Browne TD chaired the meeting during which an Cathaoirleach of Enniscorthy Municipal
District Council, Councillor Willie Kavanagh, was elected chairperson of the new branch. As well as local members the meeting was also attended by the party’s joint regional organisers, Eileen Higgins and Cllr Joe Sullivan. Councillor Willie Kavanagh was also selected to contest the forthcoming local elections that will take place in May in the newly aligned Kilmuckridge electoral area, of which the Oylegate-Glenbrien cumann is now part of.
DEVELOPER Gerry Gannon has entered into consultation with An Bord Pleanåla regarding a huge construction of 364 apartments and houses in Gorey, Co Wexford, probably one of the largest for the developer outside the capital. The scheme will include the demolition of existing structures on the site in Gorey, and the construction of 64 duplex units, 172 apartments and 128 houses. Journey times to Wexford will be cut later this year with the opening of the Enniscorthy bypass. Mr Gannon was one of the so-called Maple 10, a group of investors who bought shares in Anglo Irish Bank in order to reduce Sean Quinn Sr’s stake in the doomed lender. WEXFORD County Council’s headquarters at Carricklawn on the outskirts of Wexford town radiated a red glow as the Council joined a list of iconic buildings across Ireland in ‘lighting up’ to celebrate Chinese New Year. For the third year in a row, some of Ireland’s best-known buildings were illuminated in red as Ireland celebrated the Year of the Pig. In recent times Wexford County Council has developed a strong business relationship with China, with several business delegations from China visiting County Hall during 2018 to learn about County Wexford and doing business here. Chinese Ambassador to Ireland, His Excellency Dr. Yue Xiaoyong is no stranger to Wexford having visited on several occasions in 2018. Chairman of Wexford County Council Cllr Keith Doyle said that China is an important emerging market and one that Wexford County Council is keen to explore in terms of developing technologies, expanding tourism potential and bringing job opportunities to Wexford. “The Chinese travel market is one of the biggest in the world with almost 70,000 Chinese tourists visiting Ireland in 2018â€? said Cllr

Doyle, who added; “Chinese tourists to Ireland spend approximately â‚Ź100 million a year, and it is our ambition at Wexford County Council to add some of Wexford’s best loved visitor experiences to that list in the coming years.â€? In terms of lighting buildings up for Chinese New Year, Wexford County Council Deputy Chief Executive Tony Larkin says that from a marketing perspective, it’s very important. “Pictures of iconic Irish
buildings turned red for their New Year is an important gesture – similar to how buildings around the world turn green for St Patrick’s Day said Mr. Larkin. “The start of Chinese New Year is like our St Patrick’s Day - it’s great PR to have what is arguably Wexford’s most prominent building – Wexford County Council Headquarters - the seat of local government in Wexford - turn red to celebrate Chinese New Year, he concluded.

Council votes to keep existing electoral areas THE recommendation of the Boundaries Commission to establish two new electoral areas covering Kilmuckridge and Rosslare is in jeopardy after members voted to retain the existing boundary network at last Monday’s monthly meeting of Wexford County Council. Several ‘in committee’ sessions took place during the afternoon and only about half the agenda came up for discussion as the members were completely exercised by proposed changes. The big conundrum surrounds the creation of a new Kilmuckridge electoral district and whether Kilmuckridge would be amalgamated with either Enniscorthy or Gorey districts. If Kilmuckridge goes with Gorey, as it does in the existing arrangement, areas
such as Oylegate would be completely isolated, however, if Kilmuckridge were to join forces with Enniscorthy, districts such as Ballycanew DQG %DOO\JDUUHWW ZRXOG ÂżQG themselves in unknown territory. It is unknown what went on behind ‘closed doors’, but clearly a small number of VLWWLQJ FRXQFLOORUV FRXOG ÂżQG themselves disadvantage by having some of their canvass territory removed and included in a new electoral jurisdiction. At the January meeting of Enniscorthy Municipal District Council members called on Minister John Paul Phelan, minister with responsibility for Local Government and Electoral Reform, asking that he reconsider boundary changes in the Wexford constituency. Minister Phelan acknowledged
the concerns of members and called for a discussion on the matter at County Council level and come up with submissions or suggestions for his adjudication. Following hours of discussion members voted in favour of asking Minister Phelan to consider a submission that the four main towns of Wexford, Gorey, Enniscorthy and New Ross retain the 2014 district boundaries. This means no amendment to the existing electoral arrangements. The Council will also facilitate a delegation to meet with the Minister. The controversy arose out of the creation of a Kilmuckridge electoral area consisting of four members that would share its DŕľľDLUV ZLWK DQRWKHU GLVWULFW The Local Boundary Area Committee No. 1 Report
published last summer recommended that Enniscorthy and Kilmuckridge would be amalgamated to make a 10-seater Municipal District, however, a Statutory Instrument on December 19th indicated that Kilmuckridge would be aligned with Gorey making it the largest municipal district in the county. This would mean that Enniscorthy would only have six seats on the 34-member Council. Rosslare would have its own electoral division and Wexford Borough District would remain. Many selection conventions have taken place across the county as the May 24th Local Elections draw nearer and there is an anxious wait for a ministerial response before some candidates set out on the canvass.

ninenottomiss BOOK of the week
Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle and her friends are in huge decline and need all the help we can give them. Below are 5 tips to make our gardens more hedgehog friendly and help ease the pressure on these prickly, but sill extremely cute and adorable mammals. 1. Knock, knock – let me in Gardens can be a fantastic habitat and resource for hedgehogs, but unless you have an extremely large one, they are going to need several or many gardens within their territory to provide them with all they need. With a move away over the decades from hedges to hard borders (relax we’re not talking Brexit here!) on our properties such as fencing, walls etc., hedgehogs are finding it very difficult to access our gardens and move between them. Leaving a small gap at the base of fences or gates can make all the difference. 2. Home, sweet home Hedgehogs need somewhere to nest – think of providing some of the following: - Woodpile - Compost Heap - Native hedging/hedgerow - Man-made Hog House 3. Feeding Station Setup a Fox and Cat proof feeding station. Hedgehogs generally will be emerging from hibernation in March and April and will be hungry. Now is a good time to prepare a feeding station. Use a seethrough plastic container (or even better non-plastic equivalent) turned upside down to cover the food with a hedgehog size hole to allow access. Water and dog/cat food are perfect foods to put out for them. There are also specialist foods for hedgehogs available to buy. 4. Go wild and native Plant plenty of native wildflowers and shrubs, fruit trees etc. that will attract lots of invertebrates that hogs love to feed on. 5. Ditch the Pellets In this day and age nobody should be using slug pellets but if you please think again. Hedgehogs love slugs and eating slugs killed by pellets can kill them.
