GENERAL ELECTION 2020
THE Green Party’s general election candidate for the Wexford constituency, Karin Dubsky, has pulled out of the race. Ms Dubsky, a well known environmental activist, had stood for the party in the by-election in Wexford last November, but had been reluctant to stand again in the general election. She had not put her name forward for the party’s selection convention but when it appeared that there was no other candidate prepared to stand she agreed to go forward. Ms Dubsky had begun canvassing in Gorey and had also organised for election literature to be printed. However, she told the Irish Examiner that her situation had changed overnight and for personal reasons she would not now be standing. Ms Dubsky has been the driving force behind the environmental group Coast Watch for nearly 30 years and had resigned from the organisation recently to contest the election.
She said that she agreed to stand for the Greens initially because “the situation has changed with climate changeâ€? and she felt she could make most impact in a legislative assembly. She came sixth in the November by-election with 6.2% of the vote. Fianna FĂĄil’s Malcolm Byrne won the seat with 31.2% of the vote. Meanwhile, bookmakers Paddy Power have chalked up the odds on the General Election in the Wexford Constituency. 1/25 Brendan Howlin (Labour Party); 1/14 Malcolm Byrne (Fianna Fail); 1/8 James Browne (Fianna Fail); 4/7 Paul Kehoe (Fine Gael); 4/7 Michael D’Arcy (Fine Gael); 4/6 Verona Murphy (Ind); 2/1 Johnny Mythen (Sinn Fein); 5/1 Michael Sheehan (Fianna Fail); 8/1 Ger Carthy (Ind); 14/1 Lisa McDonald (Fianna Fail); 25/1 Jim Codd (Aontu); 50/1 Deirdre Wadding (PBP); 50/1 Seanie O Shea (Ind); and 50/1 David Lloyd (Direct Democracy Ireland)

A SUGGESTION from the Irish Association for Emergency Medicine that eight A&E departments in the country, including Wexford General Hospital, that don’t have 24-hour consultancy cover, should cease operating, has been described by Labour TD Brendan Howlin as “daft and unacceptableâ€?. 7KH GLŕľľHUHQFH RI RSLQLRQ follows a recommendation by a Dublin coroner, at an inquest into the death last year of a man who presented at the emergency department in Wexford and experienced a long delay in accessing a CT scan as there was not a consultant available to au-

However, the IAEM said there are too many emergency departments in the country and the eight hospitals that don’t have 24-hour consultant cover should stop operating as A&E departments. has ever won an election for any candidate, anywhere. For Irish politicians, too sharp a performance may even be a drawback, for we don’t seem to like our leaders to be trendsetters, orators, or even particularly good with words. The most articulate Taoiseach of the past 40 years was Garret FitzGerald. But he was a statistician who often got his facts jumbled and was easily sidetracked into rambling GLVFRXUVHV IXOO RI ¿JXUHV DQG irrelevant comparisons. Charles Haughey had a certain steely authority but he was touchy and liable to snap at interviewers and opponents who engaged him in debate. He didn’t much favour debating, in any case. John Bruton had all the charisma of a wooden block and Albert Reynolds, a most able Taoiseach, rarely opened his mouth without putting his foot in it, getting names wrong and misrepresenting his own policies. In straight electoral terms, Bertie Ahern was the most
successful Taoiseach, but he was a disaster when it came to addressing the public. He had the fashion instincts of a circus clown and his utterances were often a comical stream of consciousness, VSODWWHUHG ZLWK XQÂżQLVKHG sentences, mixed metaphors and bizarre malapropisms - as when he warned against ‘upsetting the apple tart’ and devious activities

conducted by ‘smoke and daggers’. Enda Kenny, another very successful Taoiseach, was a poor debater, both in the DĂĄil and on TV. It did him no harm at all. What really harmed Nixon in that 1960 debate was his lack of understanding of the new medium of television, how it worked and how important it could be. His lack of television awareness may not have destroyed his election chances but it certainly diminished them. Today television is being overtaken in importance by the new social media and a candidate who underestimates its power or fails to understand LW ZLOO VXŕľľHU MXVW DV 1L[RQ GLG back then. For those party leaders still worried about television debates, my advice is relax, be yourself, and remember this other piece of advice from Bertie Ahern: “I don’t think it helps people to start throwing white elephants and red herrings at each other.â€?

Something as simple and small as a rectangular basin that would fit in your sink can make a perfect little pond submerged in the ground until level with the soil and filled with rainwater, some rocks and native aquatic plants. This will soon attract frogs, newts, dragonflies and damselflies, and provide water for birds to drink and bathe in.
