The list of players to have featured in the tournament over the years reads like a who’s who of top performers in European football - Cristiano Ronaldo, Joao Moutinho, Gerard Pique, Samir Nasri, David de Gea, Gotze, Marc-Andre ter Stegen and David Silva. Ivan Rakitic in 2005, Eden Hazard in 2007, Isco and Koke in 2009, Paul Pogba in 2010 and Raheem Sterling in 2011 are just some of the continent’s biggest stars to taste defeat at the European U17 Championship but go on to bigger things.

No one safe from terror attacks

W Brian Quigley

hile we basked in a mini heatwave here at Easter, Sri Lanka was hit by terrorist attacks that sent shockwaves around the world. Nobody is safe from terrorism or atrocities, no matter how progressive or insulated you think your society is - we in Ireland have had our fair share and the rise of the New IRA is a cause for concern. In the modern, globalised world where we all travel extensively for work and holidays, being caught up in

Three Rock Hockey Club hosted the Masters Interprovincial 2019 Tournament from April 26-28. Ladies Hockey teams representing Leinster, Munster, Connacht, Ulster & South East all participated with Leinster Over 40’s, Ulster Over 45’s & 50’s winning the championship within their groups something like what happened in Sri Lanka is unfortunately on all our radars. The scale of the attacks in Sri Lanka was staggering. Consecutive suicide bombings at Christian churches in Negombo, Colombo and Batticaloa while Easter services were taking place. Coordinated attacks on luxury hotels in Colombo, the

country’s commercial capital. Attacks in Dematagoda and Dehiwala also. In total more than 250 dead, including more than 40 foreign nationals. More than 500 injured. Responsibility seems to lie with people associated with National Thowheeth Jama’ath, a local militant Islamist group with suspected

foreign links. Retaliation for the attacks against Muslims in Christchurch in New Zealand in March cannot be ruled out as a motive, although it is too early WR FRQFOXGH GH¿QLWLYHO\ WKDW WKLV was the case. These shootings – which left 50 dead and the same number injured - were carried out at two mosques by an Australian white supremacist.

Sri Lanka is no stranger to terrorism. Tamil militants looking for an independent Tamil Eelam state in northeastern Sri Lanka waged a terror campaign for many years. Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), A Marxist-Leninist political movement, were involved in separate armed uprisings in 1971 and 1987-89.

Most of Sri Lanka’s previous terrorist attacks have targeted Buddhists (the country’s religious make-up is 70% Buddhist, 12% Hindu, 10% Islam and 7% Christian), so attacking Christians is a new departure. Terrorism knows no religious or geographical boundaries though, and kills indiscriminately. Hatred is a global currency and whether spent with bombs, guns or words it produces the same grim and inevitable consequences. Victims of terrorism have had their lives cruelly cut short. 7KHLU SRWHQWLDO VQX൵HG RXW Their families have to live on without loved ones, meaning that the true cost of the attacks is more brutal and extensive than the number of casualties. When will we learn a better way? We’ve had our own terrorist past here and moved on from it, although the spectre of it is still in the shadows. Humans have the intelligence and capabilities to resolve their GL൵HUHQFHV E\ SHDFHIXO PHDQV but increasingly choose to bypass these.

Getting my photo taken – the one on WKH SRVWHUV Âą ZLWK WKH EXOE Ă€DVKLQJ DZD\ was when I asked myself what the mo ment was I decided to run. When I felt the sharp stones of Bray Beach on sore feet at Wicklow for Choice’s candlelight vigil? Or just listening to friends talk about the challenges they were facing – minimum wages, no buses, mounting college fees, nowhere to rent, insecure jobs? In truth, it was a culmination of all of this. I’ve seen what good politics, strong activism and mobilised communities can achieve. I’ve been involved in some of it. And I see how much need there is for things to be better for so many people in Wicklow. Put these together and I got my answer. Run. Get elected. Do good. I was born and raised in north Wick low, on the Southern Cross, and so I’m running in the Bray West district. That’s Enniskerry, Kilmac, the southern end of Bray, and west including Rocky Valley and Glencree. If you’re living there, I really need your vote. I will work for a positive future Ian McGahon, Labour candidate in Bray west in conversation with former TD Liz McManus

I

an, I’ve known you a long time and I have a high regard for you so will you tell the readers about yourself?

Thanks Liz. I have always been part of the community here in Bray. My late parents Dick and Maura McGahon ran businesses in Bray for almost 30 years. I work locally in Bray in Sunbeam House Services supporting people with intellectual disabilities. My Sister Sarah has also lived in Enniskerry so I have connections in the whole area. I know you have done a lot of good work in Bray and environs so tell me why you’re standing in the forthcoming elections? Every day through my work in Bray I can see that there are many areas where Bray council can improve hugely; in housing, roads, planning, estate maintenance, infrastructure such as transport and broadband. I

want to positively contribute towards the future of our town and villages in Bray Municipal District. What experience do you have? :HOO ¿UVWO\ /L] , PDQDJHG WKH Marriage Equality campaign in County Wicklow and Repeal the 8th in North Wicklow. These were both massive tasks of building teams across the whole county, organising canvassing 10s of thousands of houses. We managed in both campaigns to get some of the highest turnout in the country and the highest yes votes in the Country. I have DOVR ZRUNHG ZLWK GL൵HUHQW FRPmunity groups doing lobbying and advocacy. For example I assisted Sunbeam House service users to campaign for a bus shelter on Killarney Road Bray and for the last year I have been assisting the Keep Enniskerry connected local bus campaign. What makes you unique as a candidate? , DOZD\V ¿QG TXHVWLRQV OLNH WKLV GL൶FXOW WR DQVZHU , DP WKH only candidate in Bray who is campaigning for better local democracy. For example I am

EVERYDAY I HEAR HEART-BREAKING STORIES ABOUT THE HOUSING CRISIS. IF I CAN RESOLVE EVEN ONE HOUSING CASE I WILL BE ACHIEVING A LOT FOR THAT FAMILY calling for a portion of Bray Town Council budget to be set aside for local residents and citizens to decide how it should be spent. This was done in Lucan last year and the local community decided how €300,000 should be spent. What do you hope to achieve as a councillor.

Everyday I hear heart-breaking stories about the housing crisis. Situations of overcrowding and young families living in three camp beds in a sitting room are shameful. If I can resolve even one housing case I will be achieving a lot for that family. I will in any work I do as a councillor prioritise above all else the issues of housing.

Locally I have been lobbying a lot on improved transport and I hope to continue this work. I DOVR ZDQW WR SRVLWLYHO\ LQÀXHQFH peoples quality of life by promoting good leisure facilities such as; a village playground in Enniskerry, a permanent home for groups like Ardmore Rovers and a skatepark for Bray. We can also see that locally many

people want to actively contribute on climate change so I want to promote local community environmental initiatives. Why are you a labour candidate? I was bullied as a young gay man growing up. Because of this I know what its like to be excluded in life. Those experiences have meant that since I became a young adult I have a strong sense of social justice FRQVWDQWO\ ¿JKWLQJ IRU KXPDQ rights, democracy and equality . My strong values of equality, human rights and democracy match those of the Labour Party. I am an active trade unionist locally in Bray and have campaigned hugely on social justice issues. Labour has made Ireland a better and more inclusive place. We have mistakes in the past, I know but, overall, I’m proud of our record on equality, workers rights and the environment.

Thank you Ian. I’m asking everyone in Bray West to give you their Number 1 vote on May 24. Liz McManus

HOROSCOPES

Robin in song. (Photo Justin Ivory) IT’S MAY so it is time to set your clocks early to get up and celebrate the beauty of birdsong with one of nature’s great events – the dawn chorus. If you have never been privy to this magical experience, then I urge you to at least once make the effort to drag yourself out of bed before dawn. You will be in for a treat. What is the dawn chorus? It is the time of day when birds are at their most vocal and it reaches a peak in May in the Northern Hemisphere as by this time most of our summer migrants have arrived in and join with our resident birds. The highest number of individuals and range of species are singing this month to create the best free daily concert you’ll ever hear! Which birds sing? It is mainly male birds that sing with one notable exception being the Robin, where females also sing (but mainly in Autumn/Winter). Why do birds sing? Two main reasons; to mark and defend a territory, and to attract a mate. Why sing at dawn? Many reasons. It is an efficient use of time as it is still too dark to search for food. It let’s rival males know you survived the night and the territory is still occupied. There is not much predator activity at this time of the day, so it is safer. Females are also at their most fertile early in the morning. There is less air and wind turbulence, and less background noise, so sound carries further. International Dawn Chorus Day Sunday May 5th marks International Dawn Chorus Day and Sunday May 12th marks National Dawn Chorus Day and there will be events happening across the country. You can join me at 4am in the wonderful Killruddery estate in Bray on both days where I will be leading walks followed by breakfast (need to register in advance). Bugloss (Photo Justin Ivory)

CUT OUT GIRL by by Bart van Es

THE BORROWERS RTE 1 Tuesday 14th May, 8.30pm

GODZILLA General Release: May 2019

Little Lien wasn’t taken from her Jewish parents - she was given away in the hope that she might be saved. Hidden and raised by a foster family in Amsterdam during the Nazi occupation, she survived the war only to find that her real parents had not. Much later, she fell out with her foster family, and Bart van Es - the grandson of Lien’s foster parents - knew he needed to find out why. His account of tracing Lien and telling her story is a searing exploration of two lives and two families. It is a story about love and misunderstanding and about the ways that our most painful experiences can also be redefined.

In a brand new factual entertainment series for RTÉ One, we step inside what could be considered the most secretive room in Ireland – the Credit Union loan office. For most of us, no significant life event ever goes “unborrowedâ€?, and it’s often said that milestones in family life can be charted through a quick glance at someone’s Credit Union book. There’s a story behind every loan and in this series we meet the people who borrow money for all sorts of reasons, from family reunions, to new cars, houses, cosmetic procedures and shopping sprees.

An epic action adventure that pits Godzilla against some of the most popular monsters in pop culture history. The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient superspecies—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.

Sara Ryan, armed with her lyrical blend of emotional honesty, self-awareness and societal reflection, driven by a perceptive and rebellious spirit, is well on her way to reaching every music loving ear throughout Ireland and when you hear Steo Wall for the first time, you quickly understand why he has attracted so much praise from so many legendary musicians who want to get involved with him on his first album Where I’m From . Two stars very much on the rise.

In 1997, Robert Sarazin Blake dropped out of college and hit the road. The folk music of his father’s house had combined with the DIY punk ethos of the day and produced his first batch of songs. Performing 200 shows a year, Blake is a world class performer in a neighborhood venue. The show is a combination of songs and rambles landing somewhere between a concert and a theatrical instillation.

For a family fun day out why not visit The Ski Club of Ireland which has 3 different slopes plus a newer slope which is covered with Snowflex (the nearest thing to snow) and features travelator lifts. For children between the ages of 4 and 7 they have Kindergarten classes which run on Sundays at 1pm. For children aged between 7 and 13 they have regular children’s classes during the main season on Saturdays and Sundays. Those aged 13 and older may take part in adult classes. The minimum age for snowboarding is 13.
