Standing room only on Misery Express

t is 8.14 and I am standing in a corridor on the Misery Express, as regulars call this morning train that runs from Dundalk, in Co Louth, to Bray. I got on at the fourth stop, so my chances of being seated were nil. But we are standing comfortably enough with some people in the door wells and others straggling down the carriages. There is room to move and the man standing in front of me is even able to open a newspaper. Two stops later and we are packed like sardines in a tin. My arms are pinioned to my side and I cannot easily turn around. The man in front is unable to fold his paper or turn the page, so until the train empties a bit in FHQWUDO 'XEOLQ ÂżYH VWRSV ODWHU - we are both forced to look at the same item. train,’ it says. I wonder where you might do that. Not on the Dundalk to Bray train. And not on the Waterford to Dublin train either. Senator Jennifer Murnane O’Connor has described rushhour conditions on that service as ‘a calamity’. The senator was addressing, in particular, the plight of people in Carlow, where she lives. They board the train several stops down the line and so have no chance of a seat at peak time. I have seen people on this train standing from Thomastown and it is frequently jam-packed from Kilkenny.
So no, you are unlikely to rediscover the joy of the train on a morning run out of Waterford. What about the Rosslare line? Maybe that’s where the passengers are relaxing with WKHLU FR྾HH DQG FRPSXWHUV WZR of them sharing four seats. Not according to Wexford TD, James Browne. He
says commuters from his constituency would rather “get into their cars and battle the horrendous congestion on the M11 than face the crowded carriages. And it’s as bad in the opposite direction. “Passengers travelling from Dublin to Rosslare are often left standing

IarnrĂłd Éireann has ordered new carriages and promises that some of the over-crowding problems will be eased when they arrive, towards the end of 2021. I live in hope, but experience has taught me to treat all IarnrĂłd Éireann announcements with caution. In the meantime, can I suggest a slogan for the next advertising campaign? Blue Tit on a peanut feeder (Photo Justin Ivory) WITH Autumn rapidly drawing to a close, and the colder, shorter days of winter looming ever nearer, now is a good time to start feeding birds in your garden if you have not already being doing so. Although the weather has been unseasonably mild and warm to date, and there are still quite a few insects on the wing and wild fruits, nuts and berries to be found, these food sources will soon be running out. Also, the shorter days give less daylight hours for birds to look for food and in lower temperatures it takes more energy to search and find less readily available food sources. In wintertime every little bit of extra energy expenditure can ultimately spell doom for an individual bird. So that’s where we come in. Putting out food for birds gives them an easy and reliable source of food. It can literally mean the difference between life and death for them. While birds obviously benefit from supplementary feeding in winter, food shortages can occur at any time of year. Feeding all year round gives birds a better chance of surviving food shortages whenever they may occur. So, what foods should you feed birds? Below is a list of the best options:
Boulevard Wren and Other Stories is the stunning follow-up to the bestselling Gospel According to Blindboy, and a warped mirror held up to the Irish psyche. Provocative and unsettling, the stories rove through the centuries, from the barren fields of Faminestruck Meath to the chaotic landscape of the near future, where social media has colonised the deepest recesses of the human subconscious. This is a world populated by characters lost and at odds with the demands of contemporary life, for whom the line separating redemption and madness has grown impossibly fine.

THE YOUNG OFFENDERS RTE 2, Monday 11th November 9.30pm
TERMINATOR: DARK FATE Released 31st October 2019
The Young Offenders returns to the small creen with it’s usual hilarity. In episode 1, Jock misses the first scan of his and Siobhan’s baby, so her parents come up with a plan to adopt the child. The suggestion doesn’t go down well with anyone, so to test Jock’s ability to look after a child, Principal Walsh challenges him to take care of an egg for a full month - without losing or breaking it. Return of the comedy, starring Alex Murphy and Chris Walley.
Linda Hamilton (Sarah Connor) and Arnold Schwarzenegger (T-800) return in their iconic roles in Terminator: Dark Fate. The machines send a Terminator, the Rev-9, back in time to kill a young woman, Dani Ramos, whose fate is connected to Sarah Connor and her son John’s legacies; thusly making her a target. The Human Resistance sends an enhanced soldier, Grace whose existence also depends on Dani’s survival, back to protect her. Grace and Dani’s only hope for survival against the Rev-9 depends on them joining forces with Sarah and a T-800 Terminator.

Farewell Gaybo, a true legend
I
had only been thinking about Gay Byrne a couple of days before his death was announced on November 4. I had been in Donnybrook Church for a commemorative mass for deceased members of RTE VWD྾ RQH RI P\ GDXJKWHUV ZDV singing in the RTE choir at the mass). I’d looked around to see if Gay was in attendance – he’s been at the mass regularly in recent years – but there was no sign of him. The mass remembers everyone who worked in RTE that has passed away in the previous year. Not just actors, presenters DQG KLJK SUR¿OH QDPHV EXW electricians, carpenters, camera operators, security personnel, make-up artists and set designers. Like in any organisation everyone matters and creates the conditions for success. Gay Byrne knew this implicitly. Gay was a legend in every sense of the word. His continued presence in

RTE for decades - presenting with skill and aplomb on both radio and television – meant that he was at once both the voice and face of entertainment
in the country, the soundtrack to the growth of our nation into a modern, pluralist society. It’s possible for people to not know who the Taoiseach is,
or the President, but everyone knew who Gay Byrne was. Everyone that is except an academic in my faculty at university, who never watched
the news, read the papers or did anything outside of his VFLHQWLÂżF H[SHULPHQWV We had Gaybo in to open a new wing of the faculty once and this academic got chatting to him. “What do you do?’’ he asked Gay. Everyone laughed because they thought he was joking. They laughed even more when they realised he wasn’t. When you look at the vast amounts that less-talented presenters than Gaybo earn these days – both in RTE and abroad – there can be no other conclusion than that he was underpaid. He could have earned a fortune in the US, a place he

He set the agenda, had the debates that others shied away from. He did extensive research and made them compulsive viewing and listening with his knowledgeable and entertaining style of presenting and facilitating a show. I remember watching the Late Late Show with my whole family on Friday nights. You don’t get that now unless it’s for something like Strictly Come Dancing. Enough said. The Late Late Show has never been the same since he retired in 1999. I loved his radio show especially, and always thought he jacked it in too soon. It was common ground I shared with not just my parents but my grandparents, who were all avid Gay Byrne listeners and viewers. Remembering Gay brought them to mind too. Farewell Gaybo. - Brian Quigley
