Fairies invade Delgany DELGANY is set for an invasion of winged friends in the coming weeks as it launches a Fairy Trail. Delgany Tidy Towns will launch Delgany Fairy Trail and Old Burial Ground tours on August 24 between 2.30-4 to mark National Heritage Week 2019, which takes place between August 17-25. Starting at Blind Lane of Priory Road, Delgany, the trail takes in 250 metres of magical woodland. There will be an autism and sensory friendly
launch of the trail on August 23 from 6.30-7.30. Delgany’s heritage week events also include three guided tours of the Old Burial Ground. Tributes paid to tragic Take That fan Tina Potts
A TERMINALLY-ill Wicklow woman who was told by doctors she has only months to live and managed to meet with one of her music idols from, Take That, has passed away surrounded by her family. Band member, Mark Owen, went out of his way to ensure he met mum of two Tina Potts, from Ballyguile, Co Wicklow last April at the 3Arena. Despite being bed ridden in hospital, 40-year-old Tina, who had ovarian cancer, summoned the energy and with the approval of her medical team, saw her favourite band live in concert for one last time. Ms Potts, was given a 30% chance of living until Christmas DV VKH EUDYHO\ ÂżJKWLQJ WKH VLlent killer disease. Her cancer was diagnosed DW D ODWH VWDJH GXH WR VXŕľľHULQJ symptoms, which included fatigue, bloating, bowel changes DQG D EXLOG XS RI Ă€XLG LQ KHU abdomen. She had been urging women to get themselves checked out by medics for peace of mind. Close friend Laura Ryan said: “Unfortunately Tina
passed away around midday on Wednesday but was surrounded by everyone whom she loved and loved her unconditionally. “It’s just so upsetting for everyone. She was just too young to leave us all at this time of her life. Tina was really a great person and wonderful friend.â€? The mum, who was permaQHQWO\ FRQÂżQHG WR D ZKHHOFKDLU due to her crippling illness, had bought standing tickets for the Take That concerts prior to becoming so unwell but found out that the disability section in the 3Arena was full. Restaurants face ‘closure ahead of no-deal Brexit’ WHILE Wicklow seems to be going through a boom in restaurants and eateries, with more and more opening all the time, the Restaurants Association of Ireland (RAI) has warned that they face an uncertain future if a no-deal Brexit happens. RAI are calling Tourism Minister Shane Ross to protect the restaurant and tourism industry ahead of Budget 2020, calling for a reduction in the rate as they fear the impact on their members of what looks increasingly likely to be a no-deal Brexit. More than 7,000 people work in the hospitality sector in Wicklow alone. The restaurant VAT rate was reduced in 2011 from 13.5% to 9% to help encourage and support the growth of small businesses. It was due to expire in 2013, but successive governments deemed the lower rate such a success that it was retained
until Budget 2019. “The Restaurant, Tourism and Hospitality VAT increase has put a huge strain on our members: small businesses are struggling to cope with the huge increase in the cost of doing business,â€? Adrian Cummins, CEO of the Restaurants Association says. Âł$URXQG RQH LQ ÂżYH UHVWDXrants in Ireland will close if a hard Brexit goes ahead: the 9% VAT rate is critical to restaurant survival in Ireland. “Minister Ross must listen to the industry and defend the Tourism & Hospitality Industry in Ireland. “Given the potential for long term and far reaching consequences from a no-deal Brexit, the government must act now to ensure the viability of the sector post Brexit.â€? Raising the VAT rate to 13.5% has undermined the competitiveness and viability of Irish businesses, and at a time when other rising costs, such as insur-

The RAI also fears that if the restaurant VAT rate is not reversed ahead of a no-deal Brexit, it will only worsen the divide between urban and rural tourism and continue to put businesses at risk. A sinking feeling in Titanic town

S a boy growing up in Belfast I would sometimes witness the amazing sight of a shift change at the shipyard. The factory horns would blow and thousands of men would stream from the many gates of WKH +DUODQG DQG :RO྾ FRPSOH[ Half of them would turn left and head to their homes in the narrow streets and terraced houses of east Belfast. The rest would stream over the Queen’s Bridge to other parts of the city. 7KLV KXPDQ WLGH ZRXOG ¿OO WKH entire length and breadth of the bridge and many nearby streets as well. No vehicle could drive against it and only a very foolhardy pedestrian would have attempted to head in the opposite direction. If that was your intention you would just have to wait, for the men of the Yard did not yield to anyone. How many men work in the shipyard, went the old Belfast joke. Reply: about half of them. The true answer at that time

WKH ODWH V DQG HDUO\ 6L[WLHV ZDV WKDW +DUODQG DQG :RO྾ KDG some some 15,000 employees on its books. Although no-one seemed to realise it, the Yard’s best days were already behind it. Fifty years earlier, when it built the Titanic and other huge liners, twice that number had been employed at what was one of the biggest shipyards in the world. The Yard now has 125 workers on its books. As I write, they are occupying what LV OHIW RI WKH PDVVLYH FRPSOH[ in the faint hope of saving it from total closure. Very few Catholics were

The playwright, Martin Lynch, UHFDOOV KRZ KH KDG H[SHFWHG WR follow his father and two older brothers into dock work and ZDV VKRFNHG WR ÂżQG WKDW KLV GD had only served enough time to pass on the button to two of his boys.
Despite this setback, Martin was never out of work. “There was enough casual to keep me going,â€? he says. But casual labour at the docks was not as good as permanent employment ZLWK +DUODQG DQG :ROŕľľ Belfast’s best jobs were in the Yard and the many engineering ÂżUPV WKDW VXSSOLHG LW 1HDUO\ all of these jobs went to Protestants. What they saw as their good fortune - and some as their entitlement - turned out
to be a curse. Protestant working class lads were sure of employment and so, when free third-level education opened the door to university, they did not take the opportunity. Working class Catholics, by contrast, seized the chance WR DFTXLUH TXDOL¿FDWLRQV WKDW would allow them to bypass the road-blocks placed in their path by Belfast’s sectarian industrialists. The Protestant workers backed the wrong horse. Even by the time of my childhood, heavy industry was in decline. Now it is all but gone. Their well-paid jobs became poorly paid jobs and for many, like the men of the Yard, no jobs at all. I won’t shed tears for Harland DQG :RO྾ EXW , DP D OLWWOH VRUU\ to see it go. It is part of the history of my home city and, more than that, part of its fabric DQG ¿EUH It helped shape the city’s character and its decidedly dark humour. How many men work in the shipyard? None of them.

Woodstock festival at 50

ack in 1969, August 15-17 fell between a Friday and a Sunday and 2019 sees the same dates fall between Thursday and Saturday, this week. 7KH VLJQLÂżFDQFH" 7KHVH WKUHH days back in 1969 were when the Woodstock Festival took place - like the moon landing (and myself for that matter!), Woodstock turns 50 this summer. Actually Woodstock – which billed itself at the time as ‘The Woodstock Music & Art Fair: Three Days of Peace & Music’ – ran over four days; Jimi Hendrix didn’t come on stage (where he famously reinvented ‘The Star Spangled Banner’) until after breakfast on the Monday morning. 2QFH KH ÂżQDOO\ JRW RQ Hendrix played to a half-empty site that looked like a war had just taken place in it, such was the mess and devastation left behind by the throngs that had swelled to ‘’half a million

The carnage was a result of the horrendous weather that hit on the Saturday by the way, and not due to any fault of the attendees or hopelessly underprepared organisers. Woodstock wouldn’t happen in 2019. Health and Safety would shoot it down before LW JRW Rŕľľ WKH JURXQG QRW WR mention planning regulations and various other bits and pieces of red tape that either didn’t exist in 1969 or were easy to cut through if they did. Woodstock wasn’t just a
gathering of hippies. The festival, which was organised by Michael Lang and took place on Max and Miriam Yasgur’s farm, drew young people of all musical persuasions. Indeed the acts that played spanned the whole of the
musical spectrum, with hippies like John Sebastian, Melanie, Arlo Guthrie, The Grateful Dead and Crosby, Stills & Nash sharing a stage with rockers like Hendrix, The Who and Johnny Winter. How would I evaluate
Woodstock at a remove of a half FHQWXU\" ,W ZDV WKH KLJK SRLQW for the hippy idealism of the post-war youth and represented the hopes and dreams of that generation, especially the idea that music could change the world.
Woodstock’s legacy is evident in the fact that it gave birth to other big festivals, some of which are still running (Glastonbury comes to mind). Woodstock wasn’t followed up as originally intended. It needed the people involved (both organisers and attendees) WR VWD\ LQ WKH WUHQFKHV ¿JKWLQJ for a cleaner, greener and more peaceful planet. Some of them sold out, others copped out and many dropped RXW OHDYLQJ WRR IHZ WR H྾HFW a meaningful change. That’s why we’re having to refocus RQ WKDW ¿JKW QRZ LQ WKH IDFH RI environmental devastation. As for this weekend, I’ll be reliving Woodstock as best I can. I’ll watch the movie again (the director’s cut, of course!) and listen to a speciallyprepared playlist I made from albums I own by various Woodstock alumni. I’ll share the experience with my family and friends, and when it’s over I’ll continue to do P\ ELW WR ¿JKW WKH JRRG ¿JKW WR steer the planet in the direction of ethical, environmental and economic justice.

AS part of Heritage Week, the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG) invite you to join them for their annual, all -island, Whale Watch Ireland event at a local headland between 2:00-5:00 pm on Saturday 24th August. The purpose of whale watch day is to raise awareness of the 25 species of cetaceans (porpoises, dolphins and whales) recorded to date in all Irish waters, by giving the public an opportunity to look for and observe some of these wonderful marine mammals in their natural environment. This event also provides IWDG researchers with a unique snapshot of whale and dolphin activity around the Irish coast

You should bring binoculars or a spotting scope, refreshments and your sense of humour! Please dress appropriately for the weather conditions on the day, wear sunscreen and leave the pets at home. There is of course no guarantee that you will see whales or dolphins at your chosen site; but at last year’s event whales or dolphins were recorded at 14 of 19 sites (73.6%).
