‘We want a school’ Hundreds of pupils and parents march on Dail

HUNDREDS of pupils, parents and teachers from North Wicklow Educate Together Secondary School (NWETSS) marched on the Dail to protest against their looming eviction from their current location. The school is located in the Presentation College Junior School building on Bray’s Putland Road but they have been told to vacate it by letter dated November 14 from Kildare and Wicklow Education and Training Board (KWETB) by May 1, 2019 as the landlord intends selling the land. A letter dated September 14 and seen by the Wicklow Voice to TD Stephen Donnelly from Education Minister Richard Bruton, states that NWETSS is to be located in the Bray Institute of Further Education (BIFE) campus. However, BIFE announced their own plans for development of their campus last month. “We fully support NWETSS’ search for a school but because of our own expansion plans, it is not possible to accommodate them,” a spokesperson for the board told the Wicklow Voice. The school opened in August

Not content with hosting East Coast FM’s Freshly Squeezed morning show, the Greystones native is set to thread the boards in a new production of Seån O’Casey’s Juno and the Paycock. ‘Refugees must be made feel welcome here’ THE majority of locals in Wicklow Town believe that the refugess who will be given direct provision in the area should be welcomed even though many think that The Grand Hotel is not a suitable location for them to be housed. However, Adrian Shanagher of Fire Break, the owners of the hotel, has expressed his dismay at th reactuon of some people. “I am shocked by the extent of the commentary that is both overtly and covertly racist and xenophobic, he told the Wicklow Voice. “Virtually of all our non bedroom business has cancelled in the last 10 days which indicates to us that that the people of Wicklow town support this view in the only way that matters i.e. they have indicated they will not enter the building for christmas parties and other functions. “The reality is that, whilst lo-

One man was worried his 27-year-old son could be attacked on the way home from socialising. “He goes out at the weekend with his friends and has a few drinks. If he can’t get a taxi he walks home. JACKIE Cronin from Enniskerry is one of the featured contributors in the brand new National Treasures Book, which is the latest installment of the National Treasures project that captured the nations imagination when it aired on RTE1 earlier this year. Jackie who brought a U2 poster from the late 1970’s to a National Treasures Roadshow in Dublin is one of a select few individuals to be featured in the publication which is sure to be a top seller around the country this Christmas.

Jackie got the poster from Bono before he was famous. She worked in a local shop in Grafton Court and he used to come in and stick up posters for his gigs. The National Treasures project was a campaign to collect objects cherished by people and families that explore the history of the island of Ireland over the past 100 years. Since then, the project has transformed from a website to nationwide roadshow events, a TV series, an exhibition and now a book. With a foreword by RTÉ’s

John Creedon, this fascinating book reveals a selection of 200 diverse and fascinating objects that were unearthed by the project and presents them alongside the owners and the personal stories attached. From a pair of Sonia O’Sullivan’s Olympic running shoes to a War of Independence grenade, the stories contained within are profound, entertaining, heartwarming and tragic. The book is available in all good book shops and online at www.nationaltreasures.ie/ shop

Sinead Bayliss, a leader with Bray Ladybirds, said: “The STEM badge is a unique opportunity to cover a wide range of topics in a fun, creative and informative way.

Jessica O’Connor (7) of Bray Ladybirds “Doing the STEM activities is a great excuse for girls to get messy with slime or oobleck, investigate with magnets and slopes, experiment with water and food colouring, play with numbers and stack or build with anything. Lights sparkle as Christmas comes into view CHRISTMAS in Bray will sparkle into life on November 24 when the town’s colourful festive lights are switched on. The event is part of a Christmas marketing campaign launched by the Bray Municipal District, Bray Chamber of Commerce and Bray.ie in an effort to encourage locals to spend their euros in their own locality. Bray will be packed full of incredible experiences not to be found anywhere else this festive season: from watching Christmas Movies at The Mermaid, visiting Santa at Killruddery, exploring the Boutique Christmas Market to catching Candlelight Concerts. Locals and visitors can pick up a gift at Bray Town Centre or simply enjoy some festive cheer at one of the many pubs, clubs and restaurants throughout the town as well as availing of free parking in Council-owned carparks at weekends in December.

Cllr Pat Vance, Cathaoirleach of Bray Municipal District, said, “Local retailers are one of the pillars of our local economy and they really deserve our support. For every â‚Ź1 you spend with a local independent business, between 50c-70c circulates back into your local economy, while shopping online or out-of-town sees only 5c trickle back. “So, with free parking at weekend it makes perfect sense for everyone to shop local this year.â€? Maybe it wasn’t euphoria, but a release of pent-up frustration and disappointment; either way people were relieved that the boys had gone. They were being paid handsome salaries (amongst the

highest in World soccer) and they didn’t deliver. They certainly didn’t get the most of what they had at their disposal, even if it wasn’t the most talented group of players we’ve ever had. End of. Next month Dublin will host the draw for the Euro 2020 TXDOL¿FDWLRQ JURXSV I’m not sure if we will have a new manager in place by then, but it is a fresh start either way. 7KH TXDOL¿FDWLRQ PDWFKHV themselves will be played through 2019, packed between March and November. We need to get the right person in place as soon as possible so that we hit the ground running in the spring. But who is the right person? I’d appoint Stephen Kenny (inset) if it was my decision. His achievements with Dundalk on the domestic and international stage speak for themselves. He has developed players who have gone across the water and made the grade. He’s young (47) and ready to step up to the next level and take on a bigger role.

The reasons for not appointing Kenny could only be one or two. He’s not a big enough name to attract potential recruits to the cause who are torn between Ireland and another na-

tion. Redundant argument. Did O’Neill and Keane land Grealish or Rice, despite their pulling power from their decades of

achievement in the game? Or the one about him having no experience of handling bigname players. Again, it doesn’t gain any traction with me. Some of the squad at present played in the League of Ireland before going across the water, and know exactly who Stephen Kenny is and what he has done. They will pass this on and this will impress the others. Instant respect. What other options are there? Mick McCarthy is the favourite and it could work, but you should never go back, should you? Chris Hughton won’t leave Brighton. Steve Bruce is available and would do a good job, but Kenny could do it as well if not better. Big Sam or ‘Arry? No, I think it has to be Stephen Kenny. Hopefully John Delaney has the guts to appoint him.
