We pay €50,000 more than average for houses JUST when it looked like house prices were going to level out in Wicklow, a new report says that prices are expected to rise in the next 12 months after falling 2.3% in 2019. The price of the average threebed semi in County Wicklow will rise by 2%, a survey carried out by Real Estate Alliance claims. Prices in the county fell by 2.3% to €284,200 in 2019, with no change between September and December, while the average family home nationally
now costs €234,704, the survey found, which means houses in Wicklow are €50,000 more expensive than the national average. The REA Average House Price Survey concentrates on the actual sale price of Ireland’s typical stock home, the threebed semi, giving an up-to-date picture of the second-hand property market in towns and cities countrywide. M eanwhile, An Bord Pleanála has given the go ahead to Cairn Homes for 426 residential units
near Greystones. The appeals board granted the developer planning permission in a fast-track process despite local opposition. The planned development is on a site within the townlands of Farrankelly and Killincarrig, Delgany located 2.5km south of Greystones. It is comprised of 245 houses and 181 apartments. The plan includes three fourstorey apartment blocks at its centre. The appeals board received 18
submissions on the plan from locals, local councillors and local sports clubs. Objectors claimed that the project would not be developed in a sustainable way and would lead to a heavy reliance on cars. A number of councillors supported the proposals but others claimed that the density would be excessive and that the scheme would be visually obtrusive and incongruous. However, the executive of Wicklow County Council backed the plan.

Students set up tree firm to fight carbon
THREE entrepreneurial transition year students have come up with a clever minicompany which they hope will help us all reduce our carbon footprint. Hannah Moran (16), Alannah Guilfoyle (15) and Eleanor Stephens (16) from Loreto Secondary School Bray (above) have set up Tree-O to sell silver birch trees for €5. By selling and planting the trees, they are helping to clean up the earths atmo-
sphere as one tree can take in up to one tonne of carbon out of the atmosphere in their life time of 60 years. The three young women are taking part in the Student Enterprise Programme, an initiative run by the Network RI /RFDO (QWHUSULVH 2൶FHV RI Ireland and began selling the trees in late September 2019. They carried out their own market research, researched GL൵HUHQW W\SHV RI WUHHV found as many sources as possible and debated prices
before choosing to source silver birch trees locally from Woodside Nurseries in Aughrim in south County Wicklow. They settled on silver birch trees because they are hardy trees which are best planted between November and March which suited Tree-O’s selling time frame. To order a tree, you can private message them on their Instagram, tree_0_ or you can email them at treeo2580@ gmail.com.

WILDLIFE with Justin Ivory
Go wild in 2020 – Part 3 WELCOME to part 3 of our Go Wild in 2020 series, as we continue our list of simple actions you can take to make your garden a wilder and more environmentally friendly place. 7. Install a Wildlife Pond Probably the best thing anybody can do for wildlife in their garden is to put in a pond. This does not have to be a major or costly project. Something as simple and small as a rectangular basin that would fit in your sink can make a perfect little pond submerged in the ground until level with the soil and filled with rainwater, some rocks and native aquatic plants. This will soon attract frogs, newts, dragonflies and damselflies, and provide water for birds to drink and bathe in.

JUDGE RINDER’S CRIME STORIES Monday 27 January Virgin Media Two 9pm
1917 Released 16th January 2020
A step by step guide to starting a business in Ireland, written by Peter Cronin a lifelong entrepreneur; complete with a failure and two successes under his belt. Peter is a mentor with 25 years’ experience. He works with Local Enterprise offices and businesses across Ireland. ‘My business education was mostly in the school of hard knocks. It’s not a good educational institute. I want to prevent people going there.’ Contains pivotal information and written in an easy reading style it’s structured into three parts: Ready – prepare the business owner; Aim - get most of the business, set up in place; Fire - the launch process.
TV Barrister Judge Robert Rinder leaves the courtroom behind to review real-life cases in this 10-part series. Using witness accounts and drama reconstructions, Judge Rinder uses his years of experience in criminal defence to explore some of Britain’s most shocking crimes Episode 4: After a volatile six-year relationship with on/off boyfriend Anthony Riley, 22-yearold Adele Bellis finally called time on their romance. Barrister Robert Rinder examines the case that took a dramatic turn in August 2014, when Riley set about ensuring Adele’s life would never be the same again.
1917 is a 2019 epic war film directed, cowritten and produced by Sam Mendes. At the height of the First World War, two young British soldiers - Lance Cpl. Schofield (Captain Fantastic’s George MacKay) and Lance Cpl. Blake Game of Thrones’ Dean-Charles Chapman) are given a seemingly impossible mission. In a race against time, they must cross enemy territory and deliver a message that will stop a deadly attack on hundreds of soldiers - Blake’s own brother among them. The film also stars Mark Strong, Andrew Scott, Richard Madden, Claire Duburcq, Colin Firth and Benedict Cumberbatch.

Install a garden pond and you will soon have frogs visiting.
8. Turn off the tap Give the tap water a rest and start collecting rainwater through water butts or other systems. This water can be used to fill ponds and water your plants.
Install a water butt in the garden
9. Create a Hedgehog Highway Hedgehogs numbers are rapidly declining with loss of habitat a big factor. Smaller gardens sealed off by walls and fences are a real problem for hedgehogs. They need territories that cover several gardens to obtain enough food to survive but a need way to move from one garden to the next. Cutting small holes (13cm x 13cm) at the bottom of fences and walls allows them to travel unhindered.

10. Avoid peat-based products Peat extraction destroys important habitats so avoid using peat-based products in the garden and use other more sustainable and less damaging alternatives instead. 11. Start Composting Following on from the above why don’t you start making your own garden compost by creating a compost heap or using a dedicated composter.
This production of The Sleeping Beauty has been delighting audiences since 1946. A classic, it established The Royal Ballet both in its new home after World War II and as a world-class company. Sixty years later, in 2006, the original staging was revived, returning Oliver Messel’s wonderful designs and glittering costumes to the stage. Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky’s enchanting score and Marius Petipa’s original choreography beautifully combine. This ballet is sure to cast its spell over anyone who sees it.
