Don’t forget: dogs don’t like fireworks WICKLOW dog and pet owners have been warned to keep an eye out for their animals this Halloween. EARTH’S NATURAL WONDERS RTE 2, Sundays @ 8.30pm
JUDY Released 4th October 2019
When the van door slammed on Offred’s future at the end of The Handmaid’s Tale, readers had no way of telling what lay ahead for her – freedom, prison or death. With The Testaments, the wait is over. Margaret Atwood’s sequel picks up the story 15 years after Offred stepped into the unknown, with the explosive testaments of three female narrators from Gilead. ‘Dear Readers: Everything you’ve ever asked me about Gilead and its inner workings is the inspiration for this book. Well, almost everything! The other inspiration is the world we’ve been living in.’ Margaret Atwood
Season 2, Episode 3: Surviving against the odds. On one of the Danish Far Oer islands, men gather annually for a single harvest of a rare seasonal delicacy: eggs on steep cliffs, a risky job which exacted several deaths. In Brazil’s Mato Grosso Amazonian rain forest waters, a small tribe’s shaman and his retired father preside over the use a poisonous wood to sedate fishes to be caught in huge net. In northern Ethiopia’s Tigray, villagers celebrate a birth by joining the parents on a dangerous climb without proper path to a mountain peek-carved chapel.
2019 biographical drama film about American singer and actress Judy Garland, following her as she arrives in London in 1969 for a run of sell-out concerts at the Talk of the Town. The film stars Renée Zellweger as Garland, with Jessie Buckley, Finn Wittrock, Rufus Sewell, and Michael Gambon in supporting roles. Thirty years after starring in “The Wizard of Oz,” beloved actress and singer Judy Garland arrives in London to perform sold-out shows at the Talk of the Town nightclub. While there, she reminisces with friends and fans and begins a whirlwind romance with musician Mickey Deans, her soon-to-be fifth husband.

Monarch of the Glen (Photo Justin Ivory) THE isolated and seemingly empty valley is a rich kaleidoscope of auburns, russets and burnished gold – the rich tapestry of autumn. There is not a breath of wind on this crisp October morning as the sun breaks through and basks the eerily silent mountainsides in a gorgeous golden light. A deep, throaty bellow is carried on the air across the valley and cuts through the silence. It is answered by a cross between a whistle and a moan. Soon the previously mute landscape is alive with a cacophony of bellows, grunts, whistles and roars – as visceral and primeval a soundtrack as you are likely to encounter in the Irish countryside. This is the scene that confronted me at the weekend as I made my way along the Upper Lake at Glendalough and up the zig-zags to the Glenealo Valley in the Wicklow Mountains to witness the annual deer rut. So what is the rut? In September and October testosterone fuelled stags with freshly grown antlers will compete for the right to maintain and mate with a harem of hinds. In most cases the quality of a stag’s roar and his physical appearance will be enough to discourage most would be usurpers. In some cases this is not enough to intimidate a serious challenger and the two heavyweights will approach each other and commence parallel walking until they decide to lock antlers and fight for dominance. The deer herds in the Wicklow Mountains are a strange mix of the native Red Deer and the introduced Sika Deer. If you wish to witness the rut of our other main deer species, the Fallow Deer, then an early morning visit to the Phoenix Park won’t disappoint.

Enjoy the treat, that’s the trick
I

They never used to put up the decorations at all, I thought, although I didn’t say so, not wanting to attract the sort RI ORRN WKDW DGXOW GDXJKWHUV reserve for antediluvian fathers. I’m surprised, nonetheless, at the way this trend has grown. :KHQ GLG ZH VWDUW WR GHFN RXU halls for Halloween in a way that used to be reserved for Christmas? I remember when the whole DŕľľDLU ZDV RYHU LQ D GD\ 7KH girls dressed as witches, the boys dressed as demons, and QRERG\ ZHQW WULFN RU WUHDWLQJ they collected “something for the Halloween partyâ€?. Nowadays we turn the whole country into a Halloween party. I’m not complaining. Halloween is a great time of year. For adults who haven’t forgotten how to be children,
Michael Wolsey it’s the best fun you can have with your clothes on. Or, at least, with a witch’s clothes on. Or maybe a goblin suit. Even if you can’t get out to a fancy dress party this Halloween, you can buy a set of Dracula teeth or borrow a EURRPVWLFN DQG DFFRPSDQ\ \RXU NLGV DV WKH\ JR WULFN RU treating. It’s great fun. And that, I would have thought, was a pretty uncontentious opinion. %XW D FRXSOH RI \HDUV EDFN when I wrote something of the sort for a daily newspaper, I was surprised by the amount of criticism, and, indeed, downright abuse, I attracted
Simon Harrison and David Brabazon at the opening of Belmont Demense from readers from several FRXQWULHV RQOLQH UHDFWLRQ EHLQJ one of the perils of modern journalism. The criticism came not from people who REMHFWHG LQ JHQHUDO WR WULFN RU WUHDWLQJ RU GUHVVLQJ XS EXW
from people who believed there was something intrinsically evil about Halloween itself. One reader accused me of encouraging satanic practices, another said adults who celebrated
Halloween were leading children down the path of devil worship. Now don’t get me ZURQJ WKLV ZDV IDU IURP D Ă€RRG RI OHWWHUV PD\EH KDOI D GR]HQ emails in all. But the fact that there was anyone out there with these views surprised me. However, try Googling ‘Halloween’ and a few other appropriate words and you will discover that such beliefs are not at all uncommon. <RX ZLOO ÂżQG IRU LQVWDQFH the web site of the Church of God, an American religious group which calls Halloween “a celebration of evilâ€? and FDXWLRQV DJDLQVW LWV ÂłEL]DUUH practicesâ€? which “emphasise the morbid and macabre.â€? And you will meet one of its followers, a Mr Jerold Aust, ZKR EHOLHYHV WKDW ÂłIUDQNO\ Halloween is anything but harmless.â€? He warns: “When parents not only allow but also encourage their children to celebrate witches and goblins, they are teaching them that it is acceptable to deal in demonism.â€?
Seems a bit mad, although I’m not sure it is any odder than the Bishop of Waterford warning against the teaching of mindfulness and yoga because they are “not of Christian originâ€?. %XW OLNH NLGV RQ WKH WULFN RU WUHDW WUDLO , GLJUHVV %DFN RQ WKH +DOORZHHQ IURQW , ÂżQG D ZHEVLWH called Let God be True which reminds us that “when God wrote the laws for Israel, all witches and any related persons were to be put to deathâ€?.
