Poilievre says he’ll fight to establish direct flights between Canada and Amritsar

CONSERVATIVE Party Leader Pierre Poilievre on Saturday announced that he will fight to establish direct flights between Canada and Amritsar.

He noted that since Punjabi Canadians started coming to Canada in the 1880s, they have made an enormous contribution to our country. Many Punjabi Canadians still have strong familial, economic and cultural ties to the Punjab region.

He pointed out that Canada once had direct flights to Amritsar in the Punjab region. Amritsar is a hugely important city for all Sikhs and is the home of the holiest site in Sikhism – the Golden Temple, also known as Sri Harmandir Sahib. Punjabi Canadians could visit their family and friends, effortlessly conduct business and visit religious landmarks like the Golden Temple.

However, this flight link was cancelled, and Punjabi Canadians have been calling on the federal government to deliver direct flights between Amritsar and Canada ever since.

“But even after years of activism from the Punjabi community, the Liberal government has failed to fight gatekeepers and open the skies to Amritsar,” said Poilievre.

He added that in 2022, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau signed an Open Skies Agreement with India that abandoned Punjabi Canadians. Travellers wishing to go to Amritsar often have to wait an additional seven hours once they arrive in India or face an eight-to-10-hour drive to reach Punjab state.

“We need common sense,” said Poilievre. “We have the largest Punjabi diaspora anywhere in the world. Direct flights to

Amritsar exist from locations like London, UK, and Milan, Italy, where the Punjabi population is smaller. Punjabi Canadians are one of the fastest-growing population groups in Canada. There is a clear case for bringing home these direct flights that I am working with stakeholders to establish.”

Poilievre said he has been fighting hard, advocating for Punjabi Canadians and working to bring home flights from Amritsar. As part of his efforts, he said he has:

• Met with the Indian High Commissioner.

• Written a letter to Omar Alghabra, the Minister of Transport.

• Met with Air Canada.

Have a safety plan for family as RCMP have responded to dozens of incidents of missing children or elderly persons at previous celebrations

SURREY RCMP say they are looking forward to participating in the 2023 Surrey Vaisakhi Day Parade on Saturday, April 22.

The parade starts from Gurdwara Dashmesh Darbar Temple at 12885 85 Avenue and features a variety of floats, community groups, live music and dancers and performers. It travels along 124 Street, turns left onto 75 Avenue, continues on 76 Avenue, onto 128 Street, then back to the Temple.

Surrey RCMP will be on site not only for public safety and traffic control, but also to take part in all the festivities and celebrate with the community.

“We look forward to coming together for the Surrey Vaisakhi Day Parade and celebrating this community event alongside families and residents,” said Cpl.

* Familiarize your family members with their surroundings and have a pre-planned meeting place;

* Equip your family members with some form of identification

The announcement was welcomed by the FlyAmritsar Initiative, an independent advocacy group working to promote better air connectivity to Amritsar.

A number of road closures will be taking place in the City of Surrey this weekend due to the parade. Police ask that members of the public make arrangements to use alternate routes.

Road closures will be in place from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the day of the parade. Delays may be expected for travel between 72 Avenue to 88 Avenue, and Scott Road to King George Boulevard.

Gurbax Singh Malhi, first turban-wearing Sikh MP, awarded Key to the City of Brampton in Ontario

GURBAX Singh Malhi, the former MP for Bramalea-Gore-Malton and the first turban-wearing Sikh in the western hemisphere to be elected into a national legislature was on Tuesday awarded a ceremonial Key to the City of Brampton in recognition for his outstanding contribution to Brampton and Canada, and for his outstanding achievements as a trailblazer for the Sikh and South Asian community.

Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown presented the Key at a ceremony at The Rose Brampton, which included a panel discussion with Sikh municipal elected officials: Navjit Kaur Brar, Regional Councillor, City of Brampton; Harkirat Singh, Deputy Mayor and City Councillor, City of Brampton; Gurpartap Singh Toor, Regional Councillor, City of Brampton; Harjinder Niijar, Deputy Mayor, City of Stratford; Raj Sandhu, Deputy Mayor, Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury; and Nrinder Nann, City Councillor, City of Hamilton.

The Key to the City is a symbolic honour that the City of Brampton bestows upon a highly valued member of the community, or a celebrated or dignified guest of the City who has made an impact on the lives of people living in Brampton.

The City of Brampton said in a statement that as the first turbanwearing Sikh elected to the House

of Commons, Malhi paved the way for the representation of turbanwearing individuals and minorities in Parliament and was a fierce advocate for diversity and inclusion. Serving for 18 consecutive years as the Member of Parliament for Bramalea-GoreMalton, Malhi helped open the doors for minorities, bringing a positive awareness to minorities of all ethnic backgrounds during a time when there was a lack of representation at the national level.

He was born in a small village in Punjab, India, in 1949. During the 1960s, while still in India, Malhi started actively participating in politics. In 1975, he and his family arrived in Canada where he quickly gained a reputation as someone who would offer a helping hand. In 1993, he was elected to represent the Liberal Party in the Bramalea-Gore-Malton.

Malhi’s objective as a politician was to fight for inclusion of all people that call Canada home, and to be reflective of the diverse ethnic backgrounds that co-exist in Canada.

“As such, Mayor Patrick Brown is honouring him by awarding the Key to the City during Sikh Heritage Month,” the City pointed out.

Brown said: “We are grateful for the outstanding contributions of the Honourable Gurbax Singh Malhi, and his unwavering commitment

to inclusive policy making and community building. We are so very lucky to have this advocate in our city and we must celebrate those, like Malhi, who go above and beyond to create supportive, vibrant communities where all can be their best. Harkirat Singh said: “Mr. Malhi is a trailblazer, friend and mentor. California Sikh community shootings: 17 men arrested, authorities looking for five more

CALIFORNIA Attorney General Rob Bonta, Yuba City Police Chief Brian Baker, and Sutter County District Attorney Jennifer Dupré last Sunday in Yuba City announced 17 felony arrests as a result of a monthslong, multiagency investigation of rival criminal syndicates operating throughout Northern California that are alleged to be responsible for numerous violent crimes and shootings, including five attempted murders, in Sutter, Sacramento, San Joaquin, Solano, Yolo, and Merced counties.

Members of these groups were allegedly involved in a mass shooting at a Stockton Sikh temple which occurred on August 27, 2022, and a shooting at a Sacramento Sikh temple on March 23, 2023. During the investigation, law enforcement was able to prevent two additional shootings from occurring.

2018, there were fistfights and sword fights where one person was beaten so badly that a sword broke. Thereafter, there were shootings at various events.

Last March, police intercepted two cars headed for the Sikh parade in Sacramento and arrested seven people and seized, seizing four handguns and two other guns with large capacity magazines. That prevented a possible massacre, but still there was a shooting in which two people sustained injuries.

Operation Broken Sword Firearms Seized

The joint law enforcement effort, which culminated last Saturday in a large-scale operation with agents executing search warrants at 20 locations, also resulted in the seizure of 41 firearms.

Those arrested include Karandeep Singh, Pardeep Singh, Pavittar Singh, Husandeep Singh, Sahajpreet Singh, Harkirat Singh, Tirath Ram, Dharamvir Singh, Jobanjit Singh, Gurvinder Singh, Nitish Kaushal, Gurminder Singh Kang, Devender Singh, Karambir Gill, Rajeev Ranjan, Jobanpreet Singh and Singh Dhesi.

Pavittar Singh and Husandeep Singh were fugitives wanted for murder charges in India.

Authorities are looking for five others: Amandeep Singh, Harmandeep Singh, Gursharn Singh, Grucharan Singh and Jaskaran Singh.

According to Dupre, the two rival factions — known as Minta and the AK-47 Group — were part of one group before it split up. The two factions then started to target each other.

Surrey Councillor Elford demands resignation of Mayor Locke at City Council meeting for ‘intentionally’ misleading public

SAFE Surrey Coalition Councillor Doug Elford on Monday at the Surrey City Council meeting raised a point of privilege and demanded that Mayor Brenda Locke immediately resign for “intentionally” misleading the public regarding the Metro Vancouver Regional District vote on the Surrey Police transition.

The motion stated: “Whereas, Mayor Brenda Locke made a premeditated and false statement regarding the Metro Vancouver Regional District (MVRD) vote on the Surrey Police Transition, which she then intentionally mislead the public;

“Whereas, 10 Metro Vancouver mayors have publicly disagreed with the Mayor’s claims, and the Solicitor General and Minister of Public Safety have stated that the Mayor is incorrect;

“Whereas, the Mayor’s actions violate the City of Surrey Council Code of Conduct bylaw, which requires Council Members to align their conduct with the City’s values of integrity;

“Therefore, be it resolved that the Mayor violated her oath to carry out her duties with integrity and must resign from her position as Mayor of Surrey effective immediately.”

Elford wants Council to direct staff to remove false information from City’s website

SURREY Councillor Doug Elford on Monday at the Surrey City Council meeting introduced a motion to be considered at the next regular meeting of the Council to have the press release titled “Statement from the Mayor: Metro Vancouver Mayor’s Committee Unanimously Supports Retaining Surrey RCMP,” attributed to Mayor Brenda Locke on April 5 removed from the City’s website.

He also wanted the Ethics Commissioner to conduct an investigation into this matter.

The motion said: “Whereas this press release contains false information and misrepresents the position of the Metro Vancouver Regional Districts Mayor’s Committee;

5-4 majority in Council and so she can ignore the opposition.

However, Locke and her party have lost credibility with both the Provincial Government and her fellow mayors, and she has disgraced Surrey.

She apparently hopes that by refusing to admit her ‘mistake’ (to put it very politely), the whole issue will die out.

Surrey RCMP request public’s help to locate Bikramjeet Singh

SURREY RCMP are requesting the public’s assistance in locating a missing 21-year-old South Asian man last seen in Newton.

On Tuesday, April 18, Surrey RCMP received a report that Bikramjeet Singh was missing. He was last seen on April 15 at 7 p.m. in the 7000-block of 131 Street in Surrey.

Police and family are concerned for Bikramjeet’s health and well-being as it is out of character for him to be out of contact.

Bikramjeet is described as a 21-year-old South Asian male, 6’2, 152lb, with wavy black hair and brown eyes.

considered to be unethical behaviour by Locke who had promised transparency and honesty, but has now become the butt of jokes all across Metro Vancouver and even the rest of the Province. Even her supporters have been put in a terribly uncomfortable situation.

Indian Defence Minister invites Canadian defence companies to invest in India, carry out co-production

INDIA’S Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday in a telephonic conversation with Canada’s National Defence Minister Anita Anand discussed ways to develop bilateral defence relations, which would be “reflective of their democratic ethos and a shared interest in the peace and security of the Indo-Pacific (region),” according to an Indian Defence Ministry statement.

Anand briefed Singh about Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy and the importance attached to enhancing engagement with India. Singh welcomed increased Canadian naval presence in the Indo-Pacific region. The ministers discussed potential areas of defence cooperation from UN peacekeeping training

to defence industrial cooperation.

Singh pointed out that India is an attractive defence manufacturing destination with competitive land and labour costs and two defence industrial corridors. He invited Canadian defence companies to invest in India and carry out co-production. They would also find value in integrating Indian defence companies in their global supply chains. Both ministers agreed to work on taking the defence relationship to the next level and make defence an important pillar of IndiaCanada bilateral relationship.

Anand tweeted: “Thanks to our people-topeople and trade ties, India will continue to be a strong partner for Canada.”

Act to establish six more electoral districts: 4 in Lower Mainland, 1 on Vancouver Island, 1 in Interior

72 districts will have their boundaries adjusted; 41 districts

IN response to recommendations from the independent Electoral Boundaries Commission, the Province is introducing amendments to the Electoral Districts Act to make sure votes are weighted evenly across B.C.

“Every vote counts,” said Niki Sharma, Attorney General, on Monday. “As our province continues to grow, it’s critical that our provincial electoral districts equitably represent the people of B.C. These changes will make sure British Columbians can continue to have confidence their voices will be heard in the B.C. legislature.”

The amendments repeal the existing Electoral Districts Act and replace it with a new act to establish 93 electoral districts. This is an increase of six districts, with four new districts in the Lower Mainland, one on Vancouver Island, and one in the Interior.

The population of each electoral district should be within approximately 25% of the “electoral quotient,” which is the population of B.C. divided by the number of electoral districts. With the addition of six new districts, B.C.’s electoral quotient is 53,773. The usual deviation range is between 40,330 and 67,216 people per district. As a result of the new districts, 72 districts will have their boundaries adjusted. In addition, 41 districts will have their names changed.

These changes are in response to the independent and non-partisan recommendations of the Electoral Boundaries Commission’s report on electoral boundaries in B.C. The commission presented its preliminary report to the legislative assembly in October 2022, and the final report in April 2023. The legislative assembly voted unanimously to adopt the commission’s final report

proposals on April 6.

The commission held 63 public meetings in 43 communities and received more than 1,800 submissions as part of the consultation process. If passed, these amendments will take effect for the scheduled 2024 provincial general election.

Quick Facts:

* The Electoral Boundaries Commission must include a judge or a retired judge of the Supreme Court or the Court of Appeal, B.C.’s current chief electoral officer and a third member recommended by the Speaker of the House in consultation with the Premier and leader of the Opposition.

* The Electoral Boundaries Commission Act requires that an Electoral Boundaries Commission be appointed after every

second provincial general election to propose changes to the area, boundaries and names of electoral districts in the province.

* Under the Electoral Boundaries Commission Act, the commission may recommend adding as many as six new electoral districts in B.C.

New electoral districts in British Columbia:

Amendments to the Electoral Districts Act respond to the independent recommendations of the Electoral Boundaries Commission’s final report on electoral boundaries in B.C. The commission recommends these changes in response to the province’s estimated population growth of 500,000 people since 2015 and projected population growth in urban areas.

* Burnaby

There is a rapid rate of population growth in this area and two ridings are close to the top of the usual deviation range. The addition of a new riding will ensure room for growth in all ridings in the area by keeping populations balanced.

* Langley

At 35% over the electoral quotient, Langley East is one of the most populous ridings in the province. Population growth is projected to continue in this area. A new riding will accommodate the current population and projected growth.

* Surrey

The Surrey area currently consists of nine ridings and its population is growing quickly. At present, two of the ridings are significantly higher than the usual

deviation range. The addition of a new electoral district in the centre of Surrey, as well as other adjustments, will address these deviations as well as ensure room for continued population growth.

* Vancouver

The Vancouver area presently consists of 11 electoral districts, most of which have seen significant population growth over the past eight years. Some of the electoral districts are either close to or over the usual deviation range and the population of the area is projected to continue to grow. Creating a new riding in this area addresses these deviations and allows for continued growth.

* Langford

The population of Langford has grown by approximately 32% over the past five years and is projected to continue growing rapidly. To address this, a new electoral district is being added whose boundaries follow the municipal boundaries of the city of Langford and the district of Highlands.

* Kelowna

The three current Kelowna ridings are growing at nearly twice the provincial average. In addition, the populations of Kelowna West and Kelowna-Lake Country are above the usual deviation range. A new electoral district will address this.

Police say innocent people targeted in Abbotsford home invasion

ON April 10 at approximately 12:57 a.m., Abbotsford Police patrol officers responded to a report of a home invasion in the 1500-block of Bowman Road. A group of male suspects wearing dark clothing entered an occupied residence on the property, displayed a firearm, and assaulted two residents on the property.

Officers determined the property housed an active marijuana grow operation. However, the two victims assaulted during this incident were not associated with the marijuana grow operation but rather with the farm that operates on the same property. Both victims at the time of the incident suffered minor injuries but were badly shaken up. The Abbotsford Police’s Major Crime Unit has taken over the investigation and is in the early stages of the investigation.

“This incident is incredibly concerning to the AbbyPD as, in this case, innocent people were targeted in this act of violence. AbbyPD is reminding those that house marijuana grow operations on residential properties within the city that these operations pose a significant risk to public safety not only to the occupants of these operations but to the nearby residents as well,” said Sgt. Paul Walker, Abbotsford Police Media Relations Officer, on Saturday.

Investigators are seeking witnesses and dashcam footage from anyone who was travelling in the Sumas Prairie area before and after this incident and they are asked to contact the Abbotsford Police Department at 604-8595225 if they have any information that may be related to this investigation.

Male injured as shots fired at vehicle in Surrey

AT approximately 4:10 p.m. on Monday, Surrey

RCMP responded to a report of shots fired at a vehicle near 76 Avenue and 148 Street.

A male suffering from what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries is being treated at an area hospital. The initial investigation indicates that a white van was seen fleeing the scene.

THE Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has arrested a 20-year-old man in relation to the stabbing death of Ethan Bespflug, 17.

On April 11 at 9:23 p.m., Surrey RCMP responded to a report of a young man suffering from life-threatening injuries resulting from a stabbing in the 9900-block of King George Boulevard. Surrey RCMP officers responded along with BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) and emergency first aid was provided.

147 Street and 69 Avenue is connected to the shooting investigation. Police are working to determine a possible motive.

The victim, later identified as Ethan Bespflug of Abbotsford, died as a result of his injuries shortly after being transported to hospital. IHIT took conduct of the investigation and has been working closely in partnership with the Surrey RCMP Detachment, Metro Vancouver Transit Police, BC Coroners Service and the RCMP Integrated Forensic Identification Section to advance the investigation.

On April 16, with the assistance of the Integrated Emergency Response Team (IERT), IHIT officers located and arrested Kaiden Mintenko, 20, in relation to the homicide.

On April 17, the British Columbia Prosecution Service (BCPS) laid a charge of second-degree murder against Mintenko, who remains in custody.

“We would like to thank all members of

the public who provided information that helped advance this investigation,” said IHTI Sgt. Timothy Pierotti. “Though we are still working to determine the exact nature of the relationship between Mr. Bespflug and Mintenko, we can confirm that this was not a random attack.”

Three people seriously injured in targeted home invasion in Maple Ridge

RIDGE Meadows RCMP Investigative Support Team (IST) is continuing to investigate a targeted home invasion that occurred on Saturday.

On April 15 at approximately 1:30 a.m., Ridge Meadows RCMP responded to the report of a home invasion in the 12000-block of Garden Street in Maple Ridge. The RCMP’s Police Dog Services also attended the scene to assist.

The scene was held by police until a search warrant was executed by the Ridge Meadows RCMP IST and the Integrated Forensic Identification Services Team (IFIS).

Three people suffered serious but non-lifethreatening injuries and were transported to hospital by BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS).

Police believe this to be a targeted incident and there is no further threat to public safety at this time. They said this is currently an active and ongoing investigation and no further information is available at this time.

Police are still seeking witnesses, video surveillance or dash cam footage from the area. If you have information for the police, you are requested to contact Ridge Meadows RCMP directly at 604-463-6251.

Transit Police seek help in identifying suspect in SkyTrain stabbing

METRO Vancouver Transit Police are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a male suspect who allegedly stabbed another male passenger in the abdomen on board a SkyTrain travelling to Surrey Central Station.

On April 15 just before 1 a.m., the victim and his girlfriend boarded a SkyTrain at Gateway Station heading for Surrey Central. While the train was in motion, there was an alleged verbal interaction between the victim and a nearby male passenger, which resulted in the male passenger pulling out a sharp object and stabbing the victim in the abdomen.

At Surrey Central, a witness assisted the victim and his girlfriend down to the main entrance level where they then contacted 9-1-1. Metro Vancouver Transit Police, Surrey RCMP and Emergency Health Services attended.

The victim, a 24-year-old residing in Surrey, was rushed to hospital in serious condition and has since been released. The suspect continued on the train to King George Station where he then exited the station.

Early in the investigation, it was determined that the suspect had entered the SkyTrain system at Stadium Station earlier in the day. As a result, that station was closed for a time on April 15 as part of the investigation.

* Light brown beard

* Wearing a black jacket with a grey hoodie pulled up over his hat

– The hoodie had ‘Trust No One’ embroidered on the hood

* Wearing blue jeans with black shoes

* At one point, he was wearing glasses

“Everyone has the right to use the transit system without the fear of being attacked. Our detectives have undertaken several investigative avenues to identify the suspect and are now at the stage of appealing to the public for help, so that an arrest can be made,” said Stephen Crosby, Senior Manager, Strategic Services, Metro Vancouver Transit Police.

Surrey RCMP looking to identify witness in suspicious incident

SURREY RCMP are looking to identify a witness to a suspicious occurrence that occurred near an elementary school on Monday morning.

On April 17, at approximately 11:45 a.m., Surrey RCMP received a report that a man in a black SUV offered a 13-year-old female student a ride to school. The student did not know the man. The brief interaction took place in the 8600-block of 159 Street at approximately 8:20 a.m. and was interrupted by a woman walking her dog.

The witness is described as a woman in her 20’s, wearing a black coat and walking a small beige poodle. The witness had a brief interaction with the youth after the man drove away. Investigators are looking to identify and speak with the witness to advance the investigation.

The man that approached the youth is described as a black male, 30-40 years old, and clean-shaven.

“The intentions of this man are unknown and investigators are working to identify all involved parties in order to determine the

Incredible new research on display in new Dinosaurs of BC travelling exhibition

THANKS to the Royal BC Museum’s new travelling exhibition, Dinosaurs of BC which opened to the public on Monday, museum visitors will have a chance to learn about the ancient beasts that once called these lands home and what goes into unearthing evidence of their existence.

Designed in-house by the museum’s exhibition fabrication team, Dinosaurs of BC is a showcase of years of work led by Dr. Victoria Arbour, Curator of Palaeontology with the Royal BC Museum. From fossils to fieldwork, the exhibition takes visitors through the process of finding and excavating bones to identifying and preparing fossils for exhibition.

“Despite British Columbia not being thought of a dinosaur hotbed, there is an incredible diversity of dinosaurs that can

be found across the province—they’re just a little harder to find,” says Arbour. “We’ve only really scratched the surface of what there is to find, so it’s an exciting time to be a palaeontologist here.”

Though it may not be the first place

you’d expect to find dinosaur bones, British Columbia has a few secrets still to tell.

From ankylosaur and tyrannosaur tracks to beautifully preserved marine fossils and a reconstruction of a Ferrisaurus sustutensis, the first and only unique dinosaur to BC, the small but mighty exhibition is a true showcase of the breadth and depth of dinosaurs that once roamed the region.

Beyond looking at the variety of dinosaurs we have evidence of in BC, the exhibition also reflects the research, exploration and scientific discovery that goes into finding fossils.

Arbour’s fieldwork is a far cry from the dry desert digs so often depicted in film and television, and instead finds her more often than not on remote mountaintops accessible only by helicopter, wielding power tools

while dodging inclement weather.

“I’m excited to share the adventure of searching for dinosaur fossils in some of the most remote and beautiful places in British Columbia,” says Arbour.

Dinosaurs of BC and Arbour’s ongoing contributions to palaeontology are just a small example of the research and active contributions to new knowledge that happen every day at the Royal BC Museum.

This exhibition is presented in both English and Braille and will be open on the second floor of the Royal BC Museum, from April 17 through January 7, 2024.

Surrey recognized as ‘Tree City of the World’ for fourth time; last three times under Doug McCallum

THE City of Surrey has been designated a ‘Tree City of the World’ for the fourth time by the Arbor Day Foundation and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Route 80 express bus service launched between Vancouver’s River District and Marine Drive Station

TRANSLINK on Monday launched Route 80, a new express bus route serving the City of Vancouver between the River District and Marine Drive Station.

The launch of Route 80 is being implemented within TransLink’s current operating budget thanks to savings through TransLink’s Bus Stop Balancing program, which made service faster and more efficient on several Vancouver bus routes. Making those routes more efficient saved operating costs, which are being reinvested into the system through this new bus route, said TransLink.

Route 80 is expected to serve 400-500 customers per day and will complement service on routes 100 and 31, which currently serve River District customers. This route gives River District residents a new direct

NARINDER SINGH PRIHAR

March 2, 1936 – March 10, 2023

Narinder Prihar, 87, passed away on April 10, 2023, at home surrounded by his family. He was born in Karnana, India, on March 2, 1936, as the second eldest of three brothers and two sisters.

Shortly after his 14th birthday, Narinder joined the Indian Army School of Signals where he worked as a Cypher Operator. Narinder retired from the army as a Junior Commissioned Officer after 26 years of service, and relocated with his wife and three sons, Parmvir, Yudhvir and Dharmvir, to Kitimat, British Columbia in 1979.

After several years, the family settled in Surrey, BC, shortly after which Narinder and his wife became active members of the Lakshmi Narayan Mandir.

Narinder’s wife, Bhagwati, passed away in 2004 following a long battle with breast cancer. In the years that followed, Narinder continued to volunteer his time by driving elderly cancer patients to their appointments. He routinely donated money to support cancer research and other important causes.

Family and friends are welcome to attend the funeral service, which will be held at the Riverside Funeral Home & Crematorium in Delta on April 22 at 11a.m.

The recent relaunch of the B.C. Fairs, Festivals, and Events Fund invests another $30 million to ensure that our favourite events can continue. This fund first launched in 2021, supporting over 600 fairs, festivals, and events all across the province.

I’m excited to see that the Hootenanny swim meet down at Watermania is coming back, along with theatre series, public concerts, and sports championships!

All of these events help us come together and celebrate the diverse culture, abilities, and community around us, but they also ensure we can sustain a vibrant local economy and provide important seasonal jobs. Province takes action to protect supply of diabetes drug in B.C.

THE Province announced on Wednesday that it is enacting a new regulation effective immediately to ensure that diabetes patients in B.C. do not experience a shortage of the diabetes drug semaglutide, known widely as Ozempic.

Semaglutide is in a class of medications called incretin mimetics that help the pancreas release the right amount of insulin when blood sugar levels are high. Drugs with the active ingredient semaglutide treat Type 2 diabetes mellitus under the brand name Ozempic, an injectable, and Rybelsus, a tablet, as well as treat obesity under the brand name Wegovy.

“The immediate action we are taking today will ensure patients in British Columbia and Canada requiring Ozempic to treat their Type 2 diabetes can continue to access it,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health. “Through this new regulation, we will protect the supply of drugs in B.C. – not only for Ozempic, but for other drugs that may require it in the future.”

A new drug schedules (limits on sale) regulation has been enacted to impose conditions on the sale of semaglutide by pharmacies.

Through the new regulation, British Columbians, other Canadian citizens and permanent residents can buy Ozempic through B.C. pharmacies both in person and online. Others can only purchase the drug in person

at a pharmacy. The regulation will help prevent online or mail-order sales of Ozempic to people who do not reside in Canada and who are not in B.C. to make the purchase.

Currently, the regulation includes semaglutide drugs, including Ozempic, Rybelsus and Wegovy, but other drugs can be added as needed to protect patients and ensure they continue to have regular access to and supply of the drug they need.

The BC College of Pharmacists will be responsible for ensuring its registrants comply with the new regulation.

“British Columbians’ access to a stable supply of therapeutic medications will ensure that patients are not at risk,” said Suzanne Solven, CEO and Registrar, College of Pharmacists of British Columbia. “The college will work with the provincial government to ensure that all new regulatory requirements are met and practice standards continue to be followed by every pharmacist in B.C.”

Regulatory action will protect the supply of Ozempic in B.C. and Canada in direct response to information learned from a B.C. PharmaNet data review indicating that an unusually high

percentage of prescriptions for Ozempic were coming from one practitioner in Nova Scotia and that these prescriptions were being dispensed by two internet pharmacies in British Columbia to American residents. Increasingly, United States customers are turning to Canadian online pharmacies to purchase drugs at prices lower than at home.

“I have directed BC PharmaCare to continue to monitor and review the data regarding the number of dispenses of semaglutide drug prescriptions as a measure of the impact of this new regulation,” Dix said.

BC PharmaCare provides coverage for Ozempic as a second-line therapy for Type 2 diabetes to help patients manage blood-sugar levels when metformin is not effective. The cost is not reimbursed for weight loss. Currently, pharmacies in B.C. can fill prescriptions for patients written by U.S. doctors if they are cosigned by a Canadian practitioner.

Quick Facts:

* One of the side-effects of Ozempic is weight loss and it has gained popularity through social media as a weight-loss medication.

* Demand has driven shortages of the drug for diabetic people in various jurisdictions, such as the United States, but there is no shortage in B.C.

* Data indicates that two B.C. pharmacies filled 13,197 of the 15,798 prescriptions to U.S. residents, which represents 88% of all prescriptions filled for U.S. residents in January and February 2023.

* Approximately 95% of these prescriptions were written by one or more prescribers who identified themselves as a practitioner from Nova Scotia.

Province’s $2.1-million grant for improved access to Steveston Harbour

THE Province is helping improve access to Steveston Harbour by supporting dredging that will maintain the Cannery Channel approach to the harbour, the largest commercial fishing harbour in Canada.

“Reliable harbour access is vital for fishers and Steveston’s rich community of maritime businesses,” said Kelly Greene, MLA for Richmond-Steveston, on behalf of Rob Fleming, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “This grant supports the Steveston Harbour Authority’s plan to improve navigation in the Steveston Harbour and channel so that vessels can access the harbour services they need in a safe and timely manner. Our vibrant fishing and maritime economy will thrive for years to come as a result of this dredging project, supported by our government.”

A buildup of sediment in the south arm of the Fraser River is beginning to interfere with navigation into Steveston Harbour. The Steveston Harbour Authority has requested funding from all levels of government to undertake the planning, dredging and disposal work to improve safe access to the harbour.

Government has provided a $2.1-million grant to the Steveston Harbour Authority to support the work.

“Thanks to the Province of B.C.’s generous grant, which will fund one-quarter of the

This dredging project will support the economic benefit of Steveston Harbour to Richmond and the Metro Vancouver region. Between 22 million and 45 million kilograms of seafood is offloaded every year at the harbour, supporting thousands of jobs in the fishing industry, and benefiting tourism in Steveston Village, which had 1.7 million visitors in 2019.

“Steveston’s waterfront and harbour is an important part of Richmond’s history and economy,” said Malcolm Brodie, Mayor of Richmond. “An effective long-term dredging strategy is crucial to ongoing access. MORE than seven years after the declaration of a public-health emergency, the toxic, unregulated drug supply continues to claim the lives of British Columbians in record numbers, according to preliminary reporting released by the BC Coroners Service.

“On April 14, we once again observed the anniversary of the longest public-health emergency in our province’s history,” said Lisa Lapointe, Chief Coroner. “Since the emergency was first declared, more than 11,000 people have lost their lives due to the unregulated drug supply. This is a crisis of incomprehensible scale, and I extend my deepest condolences to everyone who has experienced the loss of someone they loved.”

At least 374 deaths believed to be caused by toxic drugs were reported to the BC Coroners Service in February (177) and March (197), which equates to an average of 6.4 lives lost per day. The 596 lives lost between January and March is the secondhighest total ever recorded in the first three months of a calendar year, behind only 2022 (599 lives lost). The total number of deaths equates to a provincewide death rate of 44.1 deaths per 100,000 population.

The reporting also reflects that the total number of deaths due to toxic drugs in 2022 has been increased to 2,314, making that year the deadliest year on record. Unregulated drug toxicity continues to be the leading cause of unnatural death in British Columbia, accounting for more deaths than homicides, suicides, motor vehicle incidents, drownings and fire-related deaths combined.

At least 11,807 deaths have been caused by unregulated drugs since the public-health emergency was first declared in April 2016. There continues to be no evidence that prescribed safe supply is contributing to illicit drug deaths.

“It is clear that an urgent response to this crisis is required and overdue,” Lapointe said. “Recommendations made by multidisciplinary experts on two Coroners Service Death Review Panels and the Province’s Select Standing Committee on Health into the crisis support the urgent implementation of a safe, regulated supply of substances for those at risk of serious harm or

death, as well as provincial standards for the provision of evidence-based treatment and recovery services, along with requirements for reporting outcomes.”

She added: “There should not be a dichotomy between access to life-saving safer supply and access to life-saving treatment options. Tens of thousands of British Columbians remain at risk of dying from toxic drugs and we continue to experience the tragedy of six people dying every single day, as we have for the past two years. This is also not a crisis confined to certain neighbourhoods or certain towns. All areas of our province are immensely affected by this crisis, and collaboration, innovation and the rejection of old stereotypes and failed solutions are necessary to prevent future deaths.”

Additional key preliminary findings are below (data is subject to change as additional toxicology results are received):

Roberts Bank Terminal 2 expansion project approved: Delta Mayor says major concerns need to be addressed

DELTA Mayor George V. Harvie said on Thursday that the federal government had reached a decision to approve the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 expansion project and added: “The port expansion has been an issue of concern for residents of Delta for many years now. The protection of the Roberts Bank ecosystem, better policing of the port, and Indigenous rights are a few of the major concerns that need to be addressed. As Mayor, I will continue to work diligently with the federal government and the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority to ensure this expansion is in line with our vision for Delta.”

He pointed out that in a 2020 report to Delta Council, a number of concerns were outlined by City staff pertaining to a port expansion, including adverse residual and cumulative effects on the Roberts Bank ecosystem, including Southern Resident Killer Whales, fish and aquatic species, birds, as well as First Nations cultural heritage and Indigenous rights, and lands and resources use were items of concern.

The issue of increased law enforcement at the port has also been raised due to the potential escalation of imported illicit drugs and weapons, including illegal firearms. This would require more security or policing resources in order to curtail these illegal operations.

Harvie is leading a delegation this week to Ottawa to discuss a number of issues with the federal government, and will raise these issues during his meetings.

Burnaby RCMP looking to identify suspect in assault of 3 people at Metrotown

BURNABY RCMP are asking for public assistance in identifying a suspect wanted in connection with unprovoked assaults of three people, including an 89-year-old woman, that occurred on Thursday morning at Metrotown.

On April 20 at approximately 9:30 a.m., Burnaby RCMP responded to a report of an assault in progress at Metrotown. The victim was walking through the mall when an unknown suspect shoved her to the ground before leaving the area. The victim was transported to the hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries and she has since been discharged.

The suspect is described as:

* Medium build

* Black jacket, with white stripes

* Green camouflage baseball cap

Investigators have learned the suspect also assaulted two other individuals who have not yet contacted police. One man was pushed seconds before the elderly woman was assaulted, and another man was shoved moments after the incident. Burnaby RCMP is encouraging both of these victims to reach out to police.

“It is fortunate that the elderly victim did not sustain more serious injuries after this unprovoked assault,” said Cpl. Mike Kalanj. “Please contact our investigators if you can identify the suspect, we would also like to speak to any other victims that have yet to come forward. Officers are still working to determine a motive.”

It is an opportunity for families and friends to spend quality time together, worship as a community, and give to charity. It is also a time to show generosity, gratitude, and compassion – core values that are at the heart of Islam.

Diverse Collection of Organizations Call Upon BC Government to Establish a Permanent Housing Roundtable to Collaborate and Test New Housing Policy

Surrey, BC – April 20, 2023.

A collection of organizations across the housing continuum is calling upon the BC Government to establish a permanent housing roundtable to address the ongoing housing crisis, announced at a Surrey Board of Trade event today.

British Columbia is amidst a housing attainability and affordability crisis. Intense public concern around escalation in housing costs, rising interest rates, and low inventory has created a challenging set of conditions within the province.

“Premier Eby and Housing Minister Kahlon are showing a great willingness to implement change and tackle BC’s housing issues head-on, and that’s to be commended,” says Trevor Hargreaves, Senior Vice President of Policy Research

& Advocacy at the BC Real Estate Association. “What’s lacking here isn’t new ideas, but process. We’re calling upon government today to create a permanent housing roundtable that will add more rigour to the policymaking process in BC, and create a structure that better utilizes the broad collection of expertise within the market and non-market housing organizations that can be brought to the table. The only outcome here would be stronger and more effective housing policy.”

By gathering housing experts from across the housing spectrum, along with federal, provincial, local, and Indigenous governments, to collaborate, share ideas, and craft advance feedback and analysis of unintended consequences for any new policy announcements, this

will create a more thorough review and advisory panel for new ideas, policy or legislation.

Are Canadians Better at Preventing Lyme Disease?

IT’S tick season and the little pests are out with a vengeance. Tiny as they are, ticks are a huge nuisance and a hazardous vector of disease. Their ability to latch onto unsuspecting hosts has made them one of the most successful blood-sucking parasites on the planet.

Ticks are the primary carriers of Lyme disease, infecting people with their bite. But do ticks or people account for the sizable difference in the number of reported cases in the US and Canada?

Every year, in the United States, about half a million people are diagnosed with Lyme disease. Based on population, all other things equal, one would expect about 50,000 cases annually in Canada. Other things, however, must not be equal. Because according to the Public Health Agency of Canada, only 3,147 cases were reported in Canada in 2021, up from 144 in 2009.

Is geography behind this huge difference? Ticks that transmit Lyme are found in most parts of the US and have expanded into the areas of Canada where most people live over the past two decades.

Challenges with diagnosis of Lyme disease might help explain the gap. When diagnosed early, a course of antibiotics is an effective treatment. If untreated, the bacteria causing infection can linger in the body for months or years before presenting symptoms ranging, for example, from short-term fevers, rashes, and fatigue to more devastating conditions.

An attack on the central nervous system could be one manifestation. This can cause numbness, pain, stiff neck, headache, and many other symptoms, including psychiatric problems.

Another concern is the cardiovascular system, where Lyme disease can disrupt electrical signals that coordinate heart beats.

Painful swelling of joints is a common feature.

Celebrities have shared their experience with long lists of problems. Among them are musicians Avril Lavigne, Shania Twain, and Darryl Hall, actors Alec Baldwin and Ben Stiller, writer Amy Tan, and even President George W. Bush.

How can these stars, and even a president, fall victim? Ticks are stealthy. They can bite people and feed for a day or more before dropping off undetected.

Tick saliva is amazing stuff, containing antimicrobials, analgesics, blood thinners, and immune suppressors in cocktails that change according to the situation. It’s this saliva that enables ticks to bite and feast without notice. What’s more, unlike female ticks which become engorged, male ticks don’t eat such a big meal, making them very hard to notice.

Take a walk outdoors when good weather beckons but know how to avoid trouble. Ticks can’t jump to catch a ride. They “quest” by perching on the tips of grasses, leaves, and branches, then use their forward legs to grab hold when a host brushes up. So stay out of long grasses in areas home to deer, rabbits and field mice. Be wary of other places where ticks might catch a human host. For instance, ticks are commonly found in grasses, bushes and treed areas of golf courses. Any pet dog stepping into long grass or jumping in and out of ditches could pick up ticks, then bring them in the home where close contact with owners can easily occur.

Why do Canadians record so few cases of Lyme disease as compared to Americans? Lack of awareness of the disease among healthcare providers

and low sensitivity of diagnostic tests are part of the answer. Additionally, one study found that Canadians tend to seek medical care less frequently for tick bites and are less likely to be tested for Lyme disease, leading to a 40% lower detection

rate.
