Harmandeep Kaur. Photo: GoFundMe A Kelowna man has been arrested and charged for the February 26 murder of security guard Harmandeep Kaur, 24, at the University of British Columbia Okanagan (UBCO). On February 26, 2022, the Kelowna RCMP responded to a report of an assault that had occurred in one of the buildings on the UBCO campus. A man working at the university had allegedly assaulted a security guard. The security guard, Harmandeep
Kaur, later died. Following an investigation spearheaded by the Kelowna RCMP Serious Crimes Unit, on Tuesday (April 5), the BC Prosecution Service approved one count of second-degree murder against 22–year-old Dante Ognibene-Hebbourn of Kelowna. He has been arrested and is expected to appear next in court on April 6.

CONTINUED FROM 1 “This has been a difficult few weeks for the community in the aftermath of the tragic events of February 26. The response in support to the woman’s family has been remarkable. I would like to thank the Kelowna Serious Crimes Unit and the first responders for their work to bring this case before the court,” said Inspector Beth McAndie, Investigative Service Officer for the Kelowna RCMP. “Our thoughts are with the victim’s family, friends, and co-workers at this time. We will continue to provide any support they may need, as
we prepare for the upcoming court process,” Kelowna RCMP said. Police said that given this matter is now before the court, no further information will be released by them. A GoFundMe Page that was set up for Kaur said: “Harmandeep, originally from Kapurthla, Punjab, India, came to Canada in 2015 with the dream of furthering her education by attending university and eventually becoming a paramedic. Her path towards fulfilling this dream had not been easy as she first studied at Columbia College in Vancouver and simultaneously worked to pay for school. Eventually, she found her way to Kelowna in 2018.
“Despite the challenges she faced as she tried to make her way in a new country away from her family back home in India, she always kept her positive attitude and determined spirit. And after years of struggle, she finally recently received her permanent residency in January of this year and was incredibly excited to have her parents come visit her this April. “Despite the distance, she was very close with her family – especially her mother. And everyone that loved her, and continues to love her, experienced the generous support she would give to those around her, always ready to do anything
that made the lives of her loved ones safer and happier. She loved fashion and styling her own wardrobe, spending time with friends while exploring Kelowna, and was endlessly fun, motivating, and loving. “Since she was a child, Harmandeep was such a bright student and always excited to learn. She risked and lost her young life while patrolling the very grounds that she had hoped to one day walk as a student. There are no words to describe how much Harmandeep will be missed by her mother, father, and brother, as well as all of her extended family and friends.”

Jaya-Madhavan said: “BC-IBN values the deep connection between Canada and India. We are very com-

‘Minds are still being colonized because they are only seeing themselves being portrayed felt the audit revealed. This is when the question came up: With this attitude, how can the same person, who has presided over systematic racism over 15 years at a public funded broadcaster, be placed in charge of its transformation? … The board had not taken action, the ministries said they don’t know what they can do and so, I got the idea of going out to the public and making our case and hence the petition.
BY INDIRA PRAHST Sociology Instructor Langara College IN an exclusive interview, Meghna Haldar, writer, director and educator working out of Vancouver, elaborated on the petition by a group called Equity Justice last month demanding change of leadership at Knowledge Network. She shared her view on systemic racism and a need for change to reclaim the voices, spaces and narratives of people of colour and Indigenous People. Indira: What was the reason behind writing and disseminating the petition online (the petition is available on The VOICE’s website voiceonline.com)? Meghna: There was a request for Knowledge [Network] to have an audit because they wanted to see how the funding was being allocated. This year, the results of the audit were released, and the results were staggering in that about 98 percent, which is two million dollars, had gone to whiteowned firms, whereas 1.7%, that is $34,000, had been given to companies owned by filmmakers of colour and zero to Indigenous companies. Indira: What was the response to the results?
Meghna Haldar Photo submitted Meghna: Knowledge in response to the results released initiatives and that there would be allotted funding for Indigenousowned companies and people of colour. … The part I was having a problem with was that no one had taken any accountability; in fact, what the president said publicly was that he had reservations about the audit and that it did not reveal the whole story. In effect, he was undermining the audit rather than apologizing for the inequities and the institutional racism many have of us have

Indira: Does the petition then in your opinion go beyond wanting accountability, in that it also exposes systemic racism you alluded to earlier? Meghna: A fantastic question. Knowledge is funded by the Provincial Government, a multicultural broadcaster and who shows Indigenous culture. It’s recent project “BC an untold history” … well, actually the truth behind those projects is that they are being made by white-owned companies and usually written and directed by white directors. … It is problematic when our stories and common histories are given over to the same people to reframe and retell. Indira: When we look at these issues and the structural barriers for filmmakers of colour and Indigenous People, what impact can this have on the younger generation? Meghna: Systemic racism is not over. … This audit gives evidence that there has been a pattern of inequities over time. Of course, the impact on younger filmmakers of colour is huge. One of the reasons why we are doing this is so that we can have a new leadership in place that is inclusive. This not only impacts filmmakers of colour,
but Knowledge is also a public broadcaster… and the impact that it has is that it underserves audiences both white or diverse. How does it underserve them? It perpetuates a lie about who we are and what we are. … So, audiences who are not white, or are Indigenous, what they are seeing is what I call “double consciousness,” that is what others think they are, it’s a portrayal of themselves as other ... the minds are still being colonized because they are only seeing themselves portrayed by white people, they’re are not authentic portrayals of our stories by us. What happens when white people tell those same stories over and over again to our children is that they grow up thinking of themselves as foreign to themselves. Media has a huge impact on our lives and our minds and, if media is being used in a systematic way, it is a powerful tool of colonization. Indira: What do you hope will happen as a result of this petition? Meghna: Diverse people are coming together and signing the petition saying we want a different public broadcaster. … Knowledge is the people’s broadcast, it is not someone’s privately owned company; it’s a publicly owned crown corporation. I am hoping we can reclaim the space, our stories and our voices, and install new inclusive leadership. But for that we need people to sign our petition to make their voices heard. Indira Prahst is a sociology instructor, specializing in race and ethnic relations, with the Department of Sociology, Langara College.

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Day of Equality BY JAI BIRDI CHETNA Association of Canada and other local organizations are planning to observe Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Day of Equality on April 14 at 4 p.m. The event will include a garlanding ceremony and presenting flowers to the bust of Dr. Ambedkar at the library of Simon Fraser University, Burnaby Campus. As the event coincides with India@75, this year’s Equality Day is dedicated to India’s 75th year of independence, Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. In support of increasing awareness for this day, on April 4 the City of Burnaby proclaimed April 14, 2022, as Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Day of Equality, a trend that it started in 2020! Last week, the Province of British Columbia also proclaimed April 14 as Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Day of Equality as well as April as Dalit History Month. The City of Surrey is expected to make a similar proclamation, as it did in the year 2021. Who are Dalits or patrons of Dr. Ambedkar and why is it important to discuss caste in Canada? The term ‘Dalit’ was used to describe the downtrodden and poor; and perhaps, also to create an environment that germinates an anti-caste movement (Teltumbde). According to the 2016 census data, close to
Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Photo: Dr.B.R Ambedkar Thoughts Facebook 2 million Canadians reported having their roots in South Asia. A conservative 10% of this figure would suggest there are approximately 200,000 Canadians of Dalit ancestry. While the majority of these would have come directly from the Indian subcontinent, many have migrated after settling in Fiji, the Caribbean, Africa, the United Kingdom, and other countries. The 2030 sustainable goals of United Nations
inspired local activists to increase the profile of caste-based discrimination being experienced outside of the South Asian sub-continent and address all types of inequality and inequity experienced globally. For generations, people of the Dalit ancestry had a quest to overcome the stigma and barriers for advancement resulting from the caste-based systems, beliefs, and attitudes. The first recorded anti-caste organization established in Canada was in 1981. It took inspiration from the teachings and philosophy of Dr. Ambedkar, champion of human rights who also chaired the constitution drafting committee for independent India. Although the incidence rate of caste-based discrimination is relatively low in Canada, it has led to a sour taste for the recipient of this discriminatory practice. Experiences reported in the United States and the United Kingdom suggest a higher rate of reported discrimination that resulted in the creation of anti-caste legislation in the United Kingdom. Patrons of Dr. Ambedkar continue to have the desire to work together and proactively overcoming caste-based discrimination in Canada through education and awareness campaigns. They also appreciate the level of support and understanding received from mainstream organizations and institutions,
Jay Birdi as well as individuals of all stripes. The animated film, Jai Bheem, is also expected to be released in theaters across India on April 14. Producers of this film are also planning on screening this film outside of India, including the Vancouver area. As information becomes available, it will be shared. For more information on the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Day of Equality or screening of Jai Bheem film, please send email at info@chetna.ca or jbirdi@chetna.ca.
City of Burnaby proclaims April 14 as “Dr. Ambedkar Day of Equality” THE City of Burnaby has proclaimed April 14 as “Dr. Ambedkar Day of Equality.” The proclamation was signed on Monday by Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley. It was read out at the Burnaby Council meeting by Councillor Sav Dhaliwal. The proclamation reads: Whereas Concerns about inequality and inequity continue to be experienced globally and efforts to eradicate inequalities need to be supported and strengthened; and WHEREAS Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, born in India, on April 14, 1891, in a community of Dalits (previously known as ‘untouchables’), arose through the ranks and chaired the drafting committee of the Constituent Assembly to make and enact the
new constitution of India; and WHEREAS Indian Constitution stipulates the lofty ideals of Equality, Liberty, and Fraternity was made, enacted and adopted in 1950; and WHEREAS The dedicated efforts and vision of Dr. Ambedkar to bring about a just social and economic order should be celebrated not only in India but rest of the world as well; and WHEREAS India is celebrating its 75th year of independence globally (Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav) NOW THEREFORE I, MIKE HURLEY, MAYOR OF BURNABY, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM APRIL 14, 2022 AS “DR. Why do we celebrate Sikh Heritage Month? remember that there is much more to do. This month reminds us that we must remain vigilant in protecting all our civil rights, rights that for some are still under threat today. The story of Sikhism lives on in each Sikh across Canada, and we are banded
BY AMAN SINGH NDP MLA for Richmond-Queensborough THIS April, we’re celebrating Sikh Heritage Month. The story of Sikhism began oceans away from here, in Punjab, India. Its early chapters were written by the first ten Gurus: from Guru Nanak, whose teachings are fundamental, to Guru Gobind Singh, who declared Sikhism a distinct faith at the Vaisakhi harvest festival. At the heart of this story and of Sikhism itself is an essential belief in equality and respect for all. If this fierce devotion to equality and respect is the heart of Sikhism, then the concept of sewa is the hand—it is the aspect of our spirituality that frames how we move through the world. Sewa is about lifting everyone around you and never leaving anyone behind. It is a defining principle of Sikhism, and I am proud to say that it is one that aligns with our government today. The first Sikhs who reached Canadian shores worked in the lumber mills and the logging industry, as well as on farmlands and on the railway with Chinese migrants. Most of them came by themselves through Hong Kong, a journey that I happened to take myself in coming here. Over the following years, Sikhs were denied the right to vote, subjected to hate and violence, and kept from their families through unjust immigration policies. Despite all of this, the Sikh community persisted in what their spirituality taught them. They believed in equality, so they continued to fight for enfranchisement. They believed in sewa, so they valiantly gave their lives as soldiers in the First World War. They built gurdwaras, Sikh places of worship, all over the province.
Surrey man charged after firing carbine rifle inside Delta residence ON March 31 at approximately 9:50 p.m., Delta Police responded to a report of shots fired at a residence in the 1300-block of Tsawwassen Drive. When Delta Police arrived on the scene, shots could be heard from within the residence. Officers contained the residence, and a male exited carrying a carbine rifle. The male was challenged by the responding officers. The male dropped the loaded firearm that was found to have jammed. The male refused further commands to allow for a safe arrest, and officers deployed a conductive energy weapon to gain control. The male was taken into custody, and the residence was cleared shortly thereafter with the assistance of the Lower Mainland Emergency Response Team. No further occupants were located, and no one was injured. The male seemed to be under the influence of drugs, and this incident appears to be an isolated occurrence. Deputy Chief Harj Sidhu said on Friday: “This was a highly volatile and dangerous situation involving an unpredictable subject with a high caliber weapon. If not for the patrol officer’s calm demeanor, bravery and trusting their extensive training, this incident could have resulted in a very different outcome. Our department places the utmost importance on ensuring our frontline officers have the necessary equipment and training to respond to these high-risk situations and bring them to safe resolutions.” Tyson Cole, 35, of Surrey, has been charged with several weapons-related offences, including recklessly discharging a firearm. He remains in custody.

together in this defense of equality and respect, in honour of sewa. After all, Sikhism is like that—it pushes its people to not only take care of each other but to stand up, with love and courage, against injustice.
Today, there are Sikh communities in every province in Canada. I sit now in the BC Legislative Assembly, along with 7 other Sikh colleagues in the government, and we are indebted to those that came before us. The racism that my ancestors faced has not fully disappeared; it has only transformed. We celebrate Sikh Heritage Month not only to commemorate the resilience and achievements of the community but also to

Air Canada flights between Vancouver and Delhi suspended June 2 to early September AIR Canada has announced that it will suspend its flights between Vancouver and Delhi beginning June 2 until early September. It says that the route is operationally constrained because of extended flying times and a re-fueling stop that is required due to the current flight paths taken to go around Russian and Ukraine airspace. Summer wind and weather conditions in South Asia are expected to compound these constraints, making the route unviable during this period. If you are scheduled to travel on an Air Can-
ada flight from Vancouver to Delhi from June 2 until September 6 (June 4 to September 8 from Delhi to Vancouver), you will be automatically re-scheduled on alternate flights to your destination without additional fees. If you purchased your ticket directly from a travel agency or an online travel website, you are asked to contact them directly for your new itinerary information. During the affected period, Air Canada will continue to operate up to 11 weekly flights between Canada and India from its gate-

NDP MLA Jagrup Brar, recognizing the 75th anniversary of Sikhs and South Asians successfully winning back the right to vote in BC after a struggle of 40 years, made the following statement in the House: TODAY we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the South Asian community winning the right to vote after 40 years of struggle. The act to amend the Provincial Elections Act was passed in this House on April 2, 1947. At the turn of the last century, South Asians of whom the overwhelming majority were Sikhs from Punjab came to Canada. From the outset, they fought together against racism and discrimination they faced on the streets of Vancouver and against racist laws that were passed in this assembly. They were designated as untrustworthy, dishonest and undesirable by the
THE Province announced on Thursday that it has introduced legislative amendments that will give local governments new tools to act when elected officials are charged with or convicted of a criminal offence. “Local leaders have been asking for new tools to help maintain public confidence in instances where an elected official is charged or convicted of a criminal offence,” said Nathan Cullen, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “While our hope is that mandatory leave and disqualification will not need to be exercised, these amendments will help limit disruption, maintain public confidence and ensure local governments are able to remain focused on serving their communities.” These legislative changes will provide municipalities and regional districts in B.C. with two separate but related tools for circumstances where a local elected official has been charged with or convicted of a criminal offence: The first amendment makes a change to the existing disqualification rules to ensure that a local elected official is disqualified at the time of conviction for an indictable of-

These changes respond to adopted resolutions of the Union of BC Municipalities as well as concerns raised by local governments. “These changes improve the current legislation by requiring a leave of absence for local elected officials charged with a criminal offence and disqualifying those upon conviction of a criminal offence,” said LaureyAnne Roodenburg, Union of BC Municipalities president. “Local governments have asked for changes to the legislation, and these amendments strike the right balance between fairness and good governance.” Along with the new requirements for local elected officials who are charged with or convicted of criminal offences, the amendments revise nine pieces of legislation.

MP Bonita Zarrillo says NDP’s dental care plan in Budget 2022 a big win for Canadians BONITA Zarrillo, NDP Critic Disability Inclusion and Deputy Health Critic, said on Friday that the NDP’s dental care plan in Budget 2022 is a big win for Canadians. She added: “I am very happy to see a full fiscal commitment to the single largest expan-
sion of public healthcare in Canada in over 50 years. This will improve the health and lives of millions of people.: Zarrillo said in a statement: “The Pharmacare plan is also welcome. The NDP used our power to negotiate this important program into the confidence and supply agreement, and now Canadians are seeing the benefits of our leverage in this Budget. When implemented it will make life more affordable and create healthier communities across Canada. “New Democrats are truly thankful to every person working in the paid and unpaid care economy, including the heroes working in healthcare. We know the past two years have been difficult for these workers. This budget does not even come close to providing enough health-
IN LOVING MEMORY OF
care funding. Our healthcare system is under great strain and more long-term federal funding is needed. We will continue to call on the federal government to address its declining share of healthcare spending in Canada. I do welcome the funds to address surgical and diagnostic backlogs and to create a dedicated
Mental Health Transfer. “Other welcomed Budget measures include reform of rental housing construction that will bring more affordable rental homes to communities, quality childcare, a pilot project to address menstrual equity, and the fairness tax the NDP has been calling for on banks and life insurance groups. “I am deeply disappointed in the lack of commitment to persons with disabilities as well as the lack of new funding to implement the calls for action for Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls. “The expansion of fossil fuel subsidies is shocking. The Liberal government’s continuing subsidization of oil and gas corporations is particularly disconcerting following the recent, dire climate mitigation report from the IPCC. “As we celebrate Canadians’ healthcare wins in Budget 2022, we know there is much, much more to do. The NDP will continue to do the work - and use its leverage - to make life better for everyone that lives in Canada.”

IN the early morning hours of Sunday, April 3, New Westminster Police Department officers were made aware of a stolen vehicle that was being driven into New Westminster. NWPD officers monitored the direction of travel of the stolen vehicle and deployed a spike belt as the vehicle drove along Front Street in downtown New Westminster. The spike belt punctured all four tires of the vehicle. Police followed the vehicle as it slowly drove into Coquitlam on rapidly deflating tires. The driver was safely taken into custody. “Officers did an excellent job of taking this driver safely into custody while minimizing the risk to other road users,”

BC Liberal MLA Stephanie Cadieux quitting, appointed Canada’s first Chief Accessibility Officer BC Liberal MLA Stephanie Cadieux (Surrey-Panorama) announced on Monday that she will be resigning her seat in the Legislature at the end of April. In a statement, Cadieux said: “I have been proud to serve the constituents of Surrey in Surrey-Panorama, Surrey-Cloverdale and most recently, Surrey South for the last 13 years. It is with gratitude that I reflect on what has been an immense honour, not only to serve my community as an MLA in both government and opposition, but also my Province as a member of cabinet. This role has been exciting, challenging, and exasperating, often at the same time, but I whole-heartedly believe in our democratic system, and in our col-
Stephanie Cadieux lective ability to build a better tomorrow, step-by-step. “I leave behind a record of service to my community and a legacy as the first woman with a disability to serve in the Legislature and ex-
ecutive council. I am happy to leave that legacy, with high hopes that I will have inspired others to public service.” Meanwhile, federal Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, Karina Gould, announced that Cadieux has been appointed as the first Chief Accessibility Officer (CAO) for a term of four years. This appointment will support the Government’s efforts to prevent and remove barriers to accessibility, and to increase opportunities for persons with disabilities to contribute to their communities and workplaces. Serving as a special advisor to the Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclu-
sion, the CAO will provide advice on wide-ranging accessibility issues, and will monitor and report on progress made under the Accessible Canada Act. The CAO will provide an annual report to the Minister detailing outcomes achieved under the Act, as well as systemic and emerging accessibility issues. The Office of the CAO will be established as a trusted source of information on accessibility, with the CAO being responsible for promoting a positive and productive dialogue between the federal government, disability stakeholders, national and international organizations. Cadieux has been a member of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia since 2009. She was the

Budget 2022: ‘Targeted and responsible investments to create jobs and prosperity today, build stronger economic future’ CHRYSTIA Freeland, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, on Thursday released Budget 2022: A Plan to Grow Our Economy and Make Life More Affordable. The government said that
since the depths of the pandemic recession, the government’s focus on jobs— on keeping Canadians employed and on keeping their employers afloat—has ensured Canada’s economy
OBITUARY
PRITAM KAUR JASSAL 1919-2022 With great sorrow we inform you that the mother of the Jassal Family, Pritam Kaur Jassal, has left this world after living for 102 years. She leaves behind three sons, one daughter, 13 grandsons and granddaughters, 13 greatgranddaughters and 19 great-grandsons. She lived her life with honesty and based on the Sikh faith. She will be remembered by her family and friends. Her funeral will take place on Saturday, April 9 at 11 a.m. at the Riverside Funeral Home and Crematorium, 7410 Hopcott Road, Delta. Artim Ardaas will follow at 1 p.m. at Akali Singh Sikh Society, 1890 Skeena Street, Vancouver. We thank you for your love and support at this time. Jassal Family
has made a rapid and strong recovery. Canada has seen the best jobs recovery in the G7, having recovered 112 per cent of the jobs lost, and with an unemployment rate that sits at just 5.5 per cent— close to the 5.4 per cent low in 2019 that was Canada’s best in five decades. In Budget 2022, the government makes targeted and responsible investments to create jobs and prosperity today, and build a stronger economic future for all Canadians. These include: 1. Investing in Canadians and Making Life More Affordable: Measures that support access to housing and a growing workforce are imperative for economic growth. Budget 2022 housing measures include: Putting Canada on the path to double housing construction over the next decade; helping Canadians save for and buy their first home; banning foreign investment that makes housing less affordable for Canadians; and curbing unfair practices that make housing more expensive for Canadians. Budget 2022 also invests in ensuring Canadian workers have the skills they need for the good-paying jobs of today and tomorrow, and will make it easier for the
Chrystia Freeland skilled immigrants that the economy needs to make Canada their home. Budget 2022 makes significant further investments in affordable child care, in reducing the backlogs of surgeries and medical procedures in our public health care system, and in advancing reconciliation with Indigenous peoples. 2. Investing in Economic Growth and Innovation: Budget 2022 builds off of Budget 2021’s historic investments in early learning and child care—which could increase real GDP by as much as 1.2 per cent over the next two decades—and includes further critical investments to make Canada’s economy both stronger and more innovative. These investments include a new Canada Growth Fund that will attract tens of billions of
dollars in private investment in Canadian industries and Canadian jobs, and a new innovation and investment agency that will help drive productivity and growth across our economy. Budget 2022 also includes up to $3.8 billion to implement Canada’s first Critical Minerals Strategy—one that will create thousands of good jobs and capitalize on a growing need for the minerals used in everything from phones to electric cars. Measures also include steps to build more resilient supply chains, to cut taxes for Canada’s growing small businesses, and to drive the creation, and ensure the protection, of Canadian intellectual property. 3. Investing in a Clean Economy: Protecting the environment and fighting climate change is the right thing to do for the planet, and it is also the right thing to do for our economy, the government said. Through Budget 2022, the government will help Canadians and Canadian businesses benefit from the global transition to a clean economy, including through new incentives for the development of clean technologies and carbon capture, utilization, and storage. In addition to fur-
ther investments to protect our land, lakes, and oceans, the government will also make it more affordable for Canadians to purchase zero-emission vehicles, build and expand a national network of zero-emission vehicle charging stations, and make new investments in clean energy. The government said that Canada entered the pandemic with the lowest net debt-to-GDP ratio of all G7 countries, an advantage that has since increased relative to other countries. With Budget 2022, Canada will maintain this leading position, while also seeing the second fastest recovery in the G7 by the end of this year. With the federal government having invested eight out of every 10 dollars to support Canadians and the Canadian economy during the pandemic, Budget 2022 represents a fiscally responsible approach to economic growth and builds an economy that works for everyone. Crucially, it upholds the government’s fiscal anchor—a declining debt-to-GDP ratio and the unwinding of COVID-19-related deficits, which will ensure that Canada’s finances remain sustainable in the long-term.

Due to the nature of the call, and the fact there was a school nearby, a large number of police officers responded. Subsequently a man holding a knife was found sitting on a bench in Volker Park. He was arrested without incident.
Out of an abundance of caution, School District 42 enacted a hold and secure which lasted approximately 30 minutes. This incident is isolated to a house in the area and police said no further details would be released.

The 55+ BC Games will allow Surrey to showcase our work in removing barriers to athletic and recreational opportunities for all ages and abilities. As an age-friendly city, Surrey is a great fit to host these games to celebrate the older adults who are so inspirational in their dedication to fitness and excellence.” Before the June deadline, the City will submit a bid application to BC Seniors Games Society (BCSGS) to host the 2026 Games. In its submission, the City will outline a one-time commitment of $55,000 for inkind services and facilities for hosting the Games, $60,000 for general expenses and $75,000 for a full-time Games Operations Manager to be employed by the City for a seven-month period in advance of the games. The BCSGS has been overseeing the staging of the Games (formerly called the BC Seniors Games) since 1988. The Games are an annual, multi-sport event hosted by a different community in British Columbia each year. The City of Surrey last hosted the 55+ BC Games in 2001. The Games have provided significant economic benefits to host municipalities in past iterations. Hosting of the Games in Vernon in 2017 showed $3.3 million of direct spending in the community and surrounding areas, while the City of Langley’s 2014 Games showed $3.1 million of direct spending in the community.

United Nations (IANS): India abstained on a General Assembly resolution that was passed on Thursday suspending Russia from the UN Human Rights Council. Permanent Representative T.S. Tirumurti said after the vote: “If India has chosen any side, it is the side of peace and it is for an immediate end to violence.” He said of the abstention, “We do so for reasons of both substance and process.” He said that India abstained because it had reservations about how “due process” was applied to the resolution, while it “unequivocally condemned” the killings in Bucha in Ukraine, which was the impetus for the resolution. “We firmly believe that all decisions should be taken fully respecting due process, as all our democratic polity and structures enjoin us to do. This applies to international organisations as well, particularly the United Nations,” he said after the vote. He said that India, which is a member of the 47-member
Council, has unequivocally condemned the killings of civilians in Ukraine and supported the call for an independent investigation. This was the eighth abstention at the UN by India on a matter involving the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Thursday’s abstention by India was a defiance of Russia, which threatened those abstaining. The adoption of the resolution with 93 votes giving it a two-thirds majority marked a big diplomatic
Islamabad (IANS): In a landmark judgement, the Supreme Court of Pakistan ruled on Thursday that the National Assembly Deputy Speakers ruling to dismiss the no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan and the subsequent dissolution of the Lower House by the President on Khan’s advice were contrary to the Constitution and the law of the land, Express Tribune reported. The court also ordered to reinstate the National Assembly and summon its session on
Saturday to hold voting on a notrust motion moved against Khan. A five-member bench headed by Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial, which also included Justices Munib Akhtar, Jamal Khan Mandokhel, Ijazul Ahsan and Mazhar Alam Khan, announced the verdict, which was reserved earlier in the day. The top court also summoned the officials of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), including its secretary. Earlier, during a hearing of the
win for the US and its allies. The impetus for the resolution was images of atrocities against and killings of civilians in Bucha after Russian troops withdrew. Twenty-four countries voted against it and 58 abstained. On March 24, the General Assembly passed a resolution condemning Russia’s invasion; India abstained on it. High-stakes diplomacy preceded the voting on the latest resolution
by both the West and Russia. Russia threatened countries abstaining on the resolution will face consequences. The Russian Mission circulated a note warning that Moscow will consider abstaining or absenting an “unfriendly” act that it will take into account in “the development of bilateral relations”. The last suspension of a member of the Council was in 2011 when the Assembly voted to temporarily remove Libya. The Council includes several members like China, Eritrea and Sudan, which have been accused of serious human rights violations. Former President Donald Trump withdrew US from the Council in 2018, with the US Permanent Representative Nikki Haley saying that it makes a “mockery of human rights”. President Joe Biden brought the US back to the Council and it was elected a member last year for a three-year term. The US had boycotted the Council for its first three years after it was founded in 2006.
case, Bandial, after consultation with his fellow judges, observed that it was clear that the ruling of the Deputy Speaker to dismiss the
no-confidence motion submitted against the Prime Minister was “wrong”. The Chief Justice remarked that there would be no stability in the country even after the restoration of the National Assembly that had been dissolved as a result of the ruling, Express Tribune reported. Attorney General Khalid Jawed Khan argued that everyone needed to be loyal to the state. He said that he is not defending the ruling. “However, I think new elections are the only solution,” he said.

Arooj Aftab’s journey to Grammys all about grit and constant learning
Mumbai (IANS): Brooklyn-based Pakistani vocalist Arooj Aftab, who became the first Pakistani woman to bag the coveted Grammy Award in the Best Global Performance category for her song ‘Mohabbat’, has faced quite a few challenges to achieve the feat. Arooj was born to Pakistani parents in Saudi Arabia. She spent her teenage years in Lahore. Her parents often held musical evenings at their home in Lahore, but Aftab was not allowed to take music lessons, which they believed would impact her studies. The 37-year-old is a self-taught musician as she learnt the basics of music by listening to artistes such
Arooj Aftab as Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Us- jazz diva Billie Holiday, among othtad Zakir Hussain, and the American ers. In addition, she took an online
music course. However, finding her calling, she soon relocated to Boston’s prestigious Berklee School of Music to study musical production and engineering. Aftab has worked on scoring for films and editing them including filmmaker Cary Mcclelland’s ‘Without Shepherds’, which tells the story of six people in Pakistan in the wake of Benazir Bhutto’s assassination. She also composed the score for ‘Bittu’ by director Karishma Dev Dube, which was shortlisted for the Best Live Action Short Film at the 93rd Academy Awards. In addition, she has also worked with MTV and Vice supervising their music and
video departments. Interestingly, Arooj’s award-winning song is a ‘neo Sufi’ version of a ghazal by Punjab-based poet Hafeez Hoshiyarpuri. ‘Mohabbat karne wale kam na honge, teri mehfil mein lekin hum na honge’, has been sung earlier by luminaries such as Mehdi Hassan, Farida Khanum, Ghulam Ali, and Indian legend Jagjit Singh. Her third studio album ‘Vulture Prince’ which came after ‘Bird Under Water’ (2014) and ‘Siren Islands’ (2018), was released to a wide critical acclaim, and attracted more attention after former US president Barack Obama included the track ‘Mohabbat’ on his 2021 summer favourites list.
Now, it’s time to uproot corruption from Himachal: Kejriwal
Mandi (Himachal Pradesh) (IANS): Boosted by its landslide win in Punjab, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday launched its campaign for the state assembly polls scheduled by November this year. The party began the campaign for the 68 assembly seats from this town, the home turf of the BJP’s incumbent Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur, by saying, “It’s time to uproot corruption from Himachal Pradesh.” In a massive show of strength, the party’s two Chief Ministers -- Arvind Kejriwal of Delhi and Bhagwant Mann of Punjab -- held a roadshow with the former pleading with the public saying, “AAP will uproot corruption from Himachal Pradesh too, if it comes to power”. “You have given 30 years to the Congress and 17 years to the BJP to rule the state, all looted Himachal. Just give me five years. If you are not satisfied, you can change us,” the AAP’s national convener said. He said first they eradicated cor-

Instead, we know how to work for people, build schools and end corruption. We have ended corruption in just 20 days in Punjab since Bhagwant Mann became the chief minister. Now, ‘kranti’ (revolution) should happen in
Himachal Pradesh too,” Kejriwal added. Accusing both the BJP and the Congress of promoting dynasty politics, Punjab Chief Minister Mann said, “AAP promotes common man in politics to end corruption and ensure development of people.” Himachal Pradesh was traditionally dominated by the Congress and saw its first non-Congress

chief minister, Shanta Kumar, in 1977, when the Janata Party came to the helm. After demolishing the citadels of all the major political parties in Punjab, the AAP is now preparing to conquer the hills of Himachal Pradesh in the November Assembly polls. The conditions, on the face of it, are not averse for the party that swept away the traditional political outfits of the Akalis, the BJP and the Congress in Punjab. A strong anti-incumbency wave against the ruling BJP -- evident from the loss of three Assembly and one parliamentary seat in the October 2021 bypolls -- and the absence of veteran Chief Minister faces may work for the party that is already ruling in two states. Both the conventional game changers -- Virbhadra Singh of the Congress and Prem Kumar Dhumal of the BJP -- are out of the scene. Singh is dead, while Dhumal is virtually in political exile after his defeat in the previous Assembly polls.
NEW
Political observers told IANS the pitch is more or less clear for the AAP, which is yet to mark its presence even in state civic body polls, to sweep away the traditional political outfits in the hill state where both the Congress and the BJP ruled alternatively from 1985. In the past few weeks, the AAP has roped in 300,000 people in its membership drive. However, so far no senior leader either from the Congress or the BJP has joined the AAP. Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Jain, in-charge of the Himachal Pradesh election campaign with the focus on health and education, has recently inducted 1,000odd people from the constituency of Chief Minister Thakur, the first Chief Minister from Mandi, into the AAP. Ahead of the Assembly polls, the AAP has announced to play a ‘semi-final’ to test the waters by its maiden contest in the BJPruled Shimla Municipal Corporation, slated in May-end.

After COVID-19 vaccines, countries approach India for supply of wheat and sugar during Ukraine conflict New Delhi: India said on Wednesday that its approach to the Ukraine crisis remains to promote dialogue to end the conflict; mitigate economic distress for itself and for the world; and to work with its partners to these ends. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, while replying to a discussion on the situation in Ukraine in Parliament, admitted that the conflict has had significant consequences for the global economy and for India’s national economy. At the same time, he revealed that after delivering vaccines to countries all over the world, India has been approached by many nations for the supply of wheat and sugar by many nations during the ongoing crisis. “We will step forward where global demands for food, grains and other materials are concerned and we will do it in a manner that is helpful to the global economy; which will not take undue advantage of countries in distress,” the minister said. The minister said that, like all other countries, India too is assessing the implications and deciding what is best for the national interest. “At a time when energy costs have spiked, clearly we need to ensure that the common person in India is not subject to an additional and unavoidable burden. Similarly, fertiliser prices have a direct implication for the livelihood of the majority of our population. And indeed, for food prices for all of us,” said Jaishankar. He emphasised that India’s approach should be guided by national beliefs and values, by its na-
S. Jaishankar tional interest and by a national strategy. “Even the security of the nation is at stake, as we maintain our defence posture in the manner that the current security challenges warrant. All these, Speaker Sir, are legitimate pursuits of national interest by India. They are similar to what other nations are doing from their particular perspective. Attributing a political colouring to it is uncalled for, it is unfair. I do not even wish to get into which country is doing how much. Eventually, the numbers will speak for themselves,” he said. Jaishankar reiterated India’s stand of pursuing dialogue and diplomacy to end the dispute.
Gurugram: Fake call centre duping US, Canada citizens busted, 17 held Gurugram (IANS): A fake call centre duping the US and Canada citizens was busted and 17 people were arrested in this connection from Udyog Vihar in Gurugram on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday. Acting on a tip-off, a team from the flying squad, Udyog Vihar police station and Cyber Crime police led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Inderjeet Singh Yadav of Chief Minister wing and Rajeev Kumar, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Udyog Vihar) raided the call centre and recovered Rs 22.50 lakh [Rs 2.25 million] in cash, six laptops, three desktops, 18 mobile phones and a 64 GB pen drive. The employees of call centre used to call the US and Canada nationals posing as officials
of Microsoft technical support and take $500 to $1,000 as service charge from them, police said. “The call centre was being run without permission. Also, it did not have any license issued by the Department of Telecommunications (DOT),” Yadav said. “During questioning, the accused confessed that they used to communicate with US and Canada citizens offering to provide tech support, send pop-ups and take nearly $500 to $1,000 per client as service charge,” he added. “The employees of the fake call centre disclosed that besides salary, they were also getting a commission. The prime accused of the fake call centre is absconding.”
“If India has chosen a side, it is the side of peace and it is for an immediate end to violence. This is our principled stand and it has consistently guided our position in international forums and debates including in the United Nations,” he said. He also said that New Delhi, deeply disturbed by the happenings in Bucha in Ukraine, strongly condemns the killings that have taken place there and supports the call for an independent investigation. Jaishankar highlighted that the Narendra Modi government believes that India’s national strategy on Ukraine situation should have four elements: Firstly in terms of diplomacy - India continues to press forcefully for an immediate cessation of hostilities and an end to violence. He said that India encourages talks between Ukraine and Russia, including at the level of their Presidents. “Prime Minister has spoken to them both, himself in this regard. This was precisely the message that was conveyed to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov when he was in Delhi. If India can be of any assistance in this matter, we will be glad to contribute,” said Jaishankar. Secondly, the ground situation calls for urgent humanitarian relief. India has already provided 90 tonnes of relief material and that too in the middle of an evacuation exercise. “Ukrainian Deputy PM Yuliia Svyrydenko called me a few days ago to request the supply of more medicines. The House will be glad to know that
this is underway and delivery should start very soon,” said the minister. Thirdly, India will work with the international community and partner countries to mitigate the economic hardships that are resulting from this conflict. While the focus is to soften its impact on its own economy, India is also helping partners going through very tough times. “Coordinating on lowering energy prices is one collective initiative. In the case of a neighbour like Sri Lanka, we are even supplying fuel on credit and food on credit,” he said. Jaishankar added that food security is another major concern. “India has been approached for the supply of wheat and sugar by many countries and we are responding positively. The House will be glad to know that whether it is Basmati rice, nonBasmati rice, sugar, wheat, our exports in the last quarter have gone up very substantially,” he revealed. Fourthly, Jaishankar said that commercial diplomacy has to find additional sources to address any disruption of supply of edible oil (India imports sunflower oil in very large quantities from Ukraine) or fertilizers. “Whether it is the supply of lentils, whether it is the requirement of raw materials for fertilizers, we are in different ways - whether it is edible oil- from MERCOSOUR, to Kazakhstan, Tanzania and Australia, to Canada, we are really looking today at global markets to see how we can lighten the burden for the common people of India, as a result of this crisis,” he said.

Chandigarh civic body seeks continuation of Union Territory status
Chandigarh (IANS): Amid the tug-of-war between Punjab and Haryana to stake claim over Chandigarh, a longstanding dispute, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation on Thursday passed a resolution saying the city remains a Union Territory and that a legislative assembly be constituted.
Only BJP councillors were present in its ruled civic body when the resolution was passed in the specially convened House. Congress, AAP, and Akali Dal councillors staged a walkout during the meeting. The resolution asked the Central government to tell both Punjab and Haryana to have its own capital cities. Currently,
Chandigarh is the joint capital of both the states. Days after the Punjab Assembly adopted a resolution to shift Chandigarh to the state, Haryana on Tuesday passed a similar resolution unanimously by urging the Centre not to take any step that would disturb the existing balance till all issues emanat-
ing from the reorganisation of Punjab are settled, besides reiterating its claim over Chandigarh. The Haryana Assembly has also urged the Central government to take measures for the construction of the Sutlej Yamuna Link Canal (SYL) in compliance with the Supreme Court’s directions.
Ensure hassle-free supply of sand, Punjab Chief Minister tells contractors
Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Thursday categorically asked the sand contractors to ensure hassle-free and smooth supply of sand to the people at the rates fixed by the government. Reiterating his commitment to ensure seamless supply of construction material to the people at the affordable rates, the Chief Minister said the current mining policy is being reviewed meticulously so as to formulate a new comprehensive pro-people
mining policy. He said the Mines and Geology Department is also now in the process to re-assess the available quantity of sand at the existing mining sites and subsequently, new sites would also be included in the forthcoming mining policy after comprehensive study. Mann also said the geology department would be strengthened with requisite manpower and latest technology so as to enhance its capacity.
Responding to the issues raised by contractors about their harassment at the hands of police besides other muscle men acting on the behest of local leaders and petty political functionaries, the Chief Minister assured them of no interference and political pressure from any of his minister, MLAs or party volunteers. “Despite all this, even in few remotest cases, someone still forces you to resort to illegal practices, then you should record the
conversation either in audio or video mode and upload the same on the ‘Anti Corruption Action Line’ number 9501-200-200 and the guilty would not be spared at any costs,” he said. At the same time, Mann said if any complaint about malpractices being done by the sand contractors is brought to his notice, then they would also face the similar action, and not expect any sort of leniency from him.

Manohar Lal Khattar ularism, and his supreme sacrifice forms an important part of India’s history. According to the Chief Minister, Haryana shares a special bond not only with Guru Tegh Bahadur but all 10 Sikh gurus as
most of them travelled across the state. The Chief Minister said the state earlier celebrated the 350th birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh as well as the 550th Prakash Purab of Guru Nanak Dev. The Chief Minister said since March last year, as part of the celebrations of the Prakash Purab of Guru Tegh Bahadur, various religious and cultural programmes have been started in some parts of the country. However, due to the pandemic, most of the programmes in Haryana got postponed. “Now the state government has decided to organise a state-level function on April 24,” he said. The Chief Minister, who launched a devotional song composed by the Department of Information and Public Relations for the event, said invitations have been sent to renowned ‘ragis’ and ‘katha vachaks’ of international repute to attend the programme. Sanjay Bhatia, the convener of the event management committee, said no previous government has ever thought of organising programmes highlighting the spiritual teachings and philosophies of the great gurus and saints.

Chandigarh (IANS): In a bid to wipe out gangster’s network operating across the state so as to create a sense of security amongst the residents, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday directed Punjab Director-General of Police (DGP) V.K. Bhawra to establish a full-fledged Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF), headed by an Additional DGP-rank officer. Chairing a high-level meeting, Mann emphasised the need of eradication of organised crime, adding ensuring law and order is the foremost priority in order to restore people’s confidence in the police machinery. He assured of all requisite manpower, latest equipment and information technology, besides adequate funds to the police force to break this unholy nexus which has already spread its wings in drug trade and ‘kabaddi’ world.
Punjab to establish full-fledged Anti-Gangster Task Force Pointing out further, the Chief Minister said the AGTF would have integrated collection of intelligence, manning and execution of operations, registrations of First Information Reports, investigation and prosecution on the lines of similar such specialised units in the country. Directing the Commissioners of Police and Senior Superintendents of Police to make coordinated efforts against organised crimes, Mann said new police stations with state-wide jurisdiction over organised crime would be soon notified with a sole motive to allay the fear from the minds of the public about the terror unleashed by the gangsters. Mann categorically said he has already instructed the Jail Department to keep strict vigil over the activities of gangsters lodged in various jails and that no laxity
would be tolerated in this regard. Sharing his personal experience to bring down the crime rate drastically in Sangrur district, Mann said as a Member of Parliament, he took an initiative to install wifi CCTV cameras connected with the local police stations in the major towns of the district from his MPLAD Fund. “High-resolution cameras were installed under this project at a nominal cost which enabled round-the-clock surveillance and instilled a feeling of security amongst the general public”, said Mann. Expressing deep concern over several precious lives lost due to fatal road accidents every day, Mann said over 5,500 lives are snuffed out due to these accidents, besides nearly 1.5 lakh people sustain injuries on this count. He asked the DGP to come out
with a comprehensive proposal to make a separate wing of highway patrolling police dedicated to effectively control the traffic snarls, besides ensuring timely medical aid to the accident victims so as save the human lives. He added that 136 black spots were identified after the demise of renowned TV personality Jaspal Bhatti in a road accident but unfortunately nothing concrete was done on the ground. He also underlined the need to keep a first aid kit in every police vehicle so that any injured on the road could be given the medical assistance. Mann also asked all the police officers posted in field as well as headquarters to maintain punctuality and discipline so as to win over the trust and confidence of people. He said these qualities would ul-
25
timately help the police force to improve its image. Earlier welcoming the Chief Minister, Bhawra assured the former that the entire police force would perform its duties with utmost dedication, honesty, sincerity and professional commitment to live up to the expectations of general public. Referring to the various demands of police department raised by Special DGP Intelligence Prabodh Kumar to face the emerging challenges of law and order, especially in wake of cyber crimes, during his brief presentation, the Chief Secretary Anirudh Tewari informed that he was already seized of these issues and asked the DGP to send a complete proposal to the Finance Department so that the requisite budgetary allocation could be made in the state annual budget.

Apprising the Chief Minister about the latest technologies to combat the menace of straw burning and bio-waste management, Rowett evinced keen interest for technology transfer in these fields as the UK has the time-tested and the most advanced expertise to effectively handle them. She also apprised Mann that the UK has certain advanced postgraduate courses which could be run in collaboration with some local universities and prestigious institutions
of higher education to enable the state youth to be gainfully employed across the globe. Likewise, she also expressed her desire to tie up with the state sports university to start courses on a mutual basis to equip students from both the sides with the advanced courses in sports to promote sports education in sports sciences, sport technology, sports management and sports coaching by adopting best international practices. On the road, the Edge offers excellent accel-

eration from the smooth Fur cylinder turbo engine with a wide powerband and lots of torque. With the Ecoboost’ s excellent engineering, Ford has overcome the traditional downsides of turbocharged engines — poor performance at low rpm, turbo lag and not so good fuel economy. In urban settings the Edge ST proves to be a comfortable family cruiser and in contrast lets rip on the high-
way. . With tuned suspension, steering and optional performance brakes, the ST Line can handle just about any winding road with utter confidence. Throttle response is just about instant. An eight-speed automatic is the only transmission available, and shifts are smooth and quick. Handling is good, cornering is well controlled thanks to at Edge’s firmer suspension. Overall, the ST Line is a fast, fun to drive competitive CUV and has great interior luxury and offers excellent features, other models in the Edge lineup still offer great value for the buck, but the Edge ST has the slinkier looks and the increased performance. Fuel economy is rated at: Est. City/ Hwy L/100km. 11.5/8.3. To sum up, not a lot to complain about, apart from the lack of an available third row. The Edge is a great daily ride. Its fast, entertaining and offers a versatile layout for families as well as being comfortable, and well featured. Highly recommended. 2022 Ford Edge ST Line priced from $42, 899 plus destination and axes. Price as tested with options - $48,699. More info at www.ford.com

2022 Genesis GV70 2.5T SUV:
AnoTher home rUn!
Auto review By Veeno Dewan The Genesis premium luxury line now features not one but two new SUVs in its lineup. The mid-size GV80 and the compact GV70, a two-row, five-seat premium luxury SUV. First up, this new Genesis looks superb with an elegant design cue including swaggering curves, creases and tightly honed surfaces, unique front and rear light treatments, metallic accents, cool looking air intakes and vertical exhaust outlets. Just like the GV80 there is a large pentagonal Crest Grille, and funky G-Matrix mesh detail on the 21-inch alloy wheels that give it a unique look. It is certainly unmistakable and drew plenty of looks during our time with the test model. Changes for 2022 are minor changes in interior trim on the center console with metallic trim pieces and spectacular blue -green leather seats and trim with contrast stitching. The two engine choices are either: a 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder (300 hp / 311 lb-ft torque), or a 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6 375 hp unit with 391 lb-ft torque). Both engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. The GV70 is offered in two main variants with several trim’ options. The Elegant range is focused on the four-cylinder models, while the Athletic trim applies to
the top-tier four-cylinder grade (2.5T Prestige) and the two 3.5 V6 trims. The athletic grades receive dark chrome accents, dark chrome grille, extended air intakes and round exhaust garnishes. 2022 Genesis GV70 Pricing ranges from 2.5T Select – $49,000, 2.5T Advanced – $55,000, 2.5T Prestige – $63,000, to the 3.5T Sport – $68,500, and the 3.5T Sport Plus – $75,500 as tested; with the V6 (and standard allwheel-drive, including an electronic limited-slip differential for rear-axle torque vectoring and unique styled steering wheel The GV70 interior lives up to the excitement of the exterior. An aircraft “wing” links the dash centre stack and door pull cut designs and looks very elegant. High quality material define the cabin: metallic speaker grille covers, door pulls and centre console inserts, to the backlit, tempered glass gear selector knob, all wink and beguile. Meanwhile the rich , sumptuous, comfortable quilted leather seating will have you in admiration. I just loved the red leather interior trim on our testers! The dash incorporates a wonderful 12.3inch configurable digital instrument cluster which uses a group of sensors to project a stereoscopic 3D image that can be viewed from any angle. A new multimedia controller supports a variety of features such as: handwriting recognition, push, rotation, and swipe. The
superbright 14.5-inch infotainment display includes a s LCD screen and a plethora of multimedia functions and apps, plus standard Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto connectivity. Also impressive is the degree of customization available – with a huge range of colors, for the interior trim, and seats with contrasting stitching and piping. Exterior paint colors range from the sublime to the downright exuberant. The GV70 features a roomy interior throughout with decent sized accommodation at the rear. Cargo volume is rated at 1,610 litres (56.9 cu ft) accessed through a power liftgate and improved with folding rear seats. I will have you know, the GV70 was put through its handling development at the famed Nürburgring racetrack in Germany under the beady eye of men in white coats - so you know the 2022 Genesis GV70 handles more like a sports sedan; some nice rear wheelspin on hard standing start can be elicited and there is fast strong acceleration. The engine is very powerful and provide lot of torque off the line. I love that urgent exhaust note! The
steering has good on-center feel but is a little light in my opinion. However, there are multi drive modes which when used offers tightened handling and more steering feel. The variable ratio steering, and electronically controlled suspension provide agile responses and a balanced ride and handling. Performance drivers can also choose from a variety of drive modes according to their personal preference for driving situation. Fuel economy is rated at: 12.9 / 10.0 / 11.6 L / 100 km city / highway / combined. Not a lot of downsides I can see for now. To sum up, you just must take a test drive if you are cross shopping with likes of the BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi competition. The GV70 is better looking, better equipped, offers more value for money, and does not give much away. A very impressive luxury sports SUV for now, and highly recommended. Genesis is the name to watch. 2022 – Genesis GV 70 2.5T Priced from $49,000 - $75,500. WEBSITE: www.genesis.com/ca

other actress and a Felinni in the making cameraman extraordinaire (?). You get the picture. To be fair the film is really two parts. Half one concerns the making of a porn pic with lots of pent-up fun and sexy dialogue. Part two turns into an orgy of blood. Call it The Texas Chainsaw Massacre meets Emanuelle. Bottom line it’s all fun in bad taste. Take it all In With a big grain of salt. Oh yes, and do beware of wolves in sheep clothing. Even some golden oldies get into the act getting into some kinky geriatric stuff. Director /writer Ti West (In a Valley of Violence)knows his stuff . Here he creates a penetrating atmosphere of some pleasure seekers paying the ultimate price to get off . Shocking, positively shocking to coin a classic James Bond line from the opening precredit sequence of 1964’s Goldfinger.

Horror films have always found an audience. Cheap to make and given a good storyline they have proven to be box office gold time and time again. Hoping to cash in on those pandemic blues and trying to scare you silly is A24 with their new film X. Not to be confused with XXX or the Triple X movies featuring the dynamic buff and tough tag team of Vin Diesel and Ice Cube respectively this new X has mostly a no name cast. Get ready to get your freak on at Cineplex Odeon Cinemas and Landmark Theatres across B.C. Here the X relates to X rated movies. Yes the adult type. The old porn movies that your parents never wanted to let you see but watched behind closed doors or at the old Seaview Theatre in Blaine for hard core of the more erotic fare at the old Studio Theatres on Granville Street. With the advent of VHS video tapes home viewing of adult fare boomed. And when the internet came about it flourished thanks to pornography. Out to catch this wave are a group of budding filmmakers from Houston. Sex sells. There is no doubt about it. So good old boy Wayne vans up and goes on a road trip with his “stars” and crew. Ready to have a good time is Martin Henderson who kind of looks like a dead ringer (maybe in your/his not so wildest dreams ) for Mathew M Conaughey, hits the nail on the head (or foot) in more ways than one as the team leader and prime motivator for this homegrown project. Along for the ride are ace xxx performers Jackson and Bobby-Lynne, hotly played by Kid Kodi and Brittany Snow along with an assistant,

Continued growth in new listings a hopeful sign for home buyers in the Fraser Valley
SURREY, BC: For the third consecutive month, new listings in the Fraser Valley continued to climb in March giving buyers more to choose from, helping to increase overall active inventory to levels not seen since last July. Property sales remain robust, as Benchmark prices, the price of a ‘typical’ home, continued to increase month-over-month. In March, the FVREB processed 2,580 residential and commercial sales on its Multiple Listing Service® (MLS®), a decrease of 22.5 per cent compared to March 2021 and 41.4 per cent more than were processed in February. Sandra Benz, President of the Board, said of this month’s statistics, “Sales were strong again in March as more new listings continued to come on stream. We’re hopeful this will contribute to a slowing in price growth, which is good news for the home-buying public. Other encouraging signs, such as less open house traffic and fewer multiple offers, may help us get to a more balanced market, however until the fundamental issue of lack of supply is addressed, we won’t see that happen anytime soon.” The Board received 4,580 new listings in March, a decrease of 10.0 per cent compared to March of last year, and 22.4 per cent more than were processed in February. Total active inventory for March was 4,699, a decrease of 6.2 per cent compared to last year’s 5,012 active listings, however 24.0 per cent higher than last month.
Buying or Selling...
Baldev Gill, Chief Executive Officer of the Board, added, “We may not see the impact of recent interest rate hikes on the market trends until later in 2022. With fixed rates nearly double what they were a year ago, new homebuyers will likely be more impacted than other segments of the home-buying public, as mortgage stress test conditions become more stringent. We hope to see equal efforts from government to address inventory issues to help make housing more affordable.” Across Fraser Valley, in March, the average number of days to sell a single-family detached home was 12 and a townhome was 14 days. Apartments took, on average, 11 days to sell.

For men, don’t disregard a lump in the breast
FEW findings cause women as much fear as discovering a breast lump and wonder if it’s cancer. But what about men who notice a mass and pain in the breast? Male breast lumps are not commonly discussed in the locker room. But confusion and embarrassment can delay diagnosis of a malignancy. Breast cancer is not entirely a woman’s disease. Although it occurs in males in less than one percent of cases, diagnosis tends to be late. In 2022, of the 2,710 American men expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer, about 530 will die. But male breast lumps are not always dangerous. There’s a condition called “gynecomastia” derived from the Greek root for female and “mastos” for breast. In fact, studies of King Tut’s mummy reveal that Egypt’s Boy King had enlarged breasts. About one third of males will eventually develop this condition! What causes gynecomastia? Hormonal changes decreasing testosterone in relation to estrogen are at the root of the issue. Puberty can enlarge boy breasts, lasting one to two years. It’s also common in males between 50 and 70 years of age. For these older men, a diagnosis of why hormones become imbalanced is not easy. Gynecomastia can be the result of a long list of medications, such as steroids, antibiotics, and anti-depressants. Drugs for treating heart and stomach conditions, including ulcers, can trigger the problem. Too much or too little thyroid medication may be the cause. Recreational drugs can have a role as well. The long list of possible causes doesn’t end here. For instance, obesity also increases estrogen levels and increases fatty material in the
breast. Even an enlarged prostate gland and bacterial and fungal infections are listed causes of this condition. And last, but not least, is aging. Males who develop enlarged breasts face one difficult dilemma. That is, increased breast tissue is associated with the other sex. Psychological distress is an unfortunate consequence for men who then try to hide the condition. But like it or not, they should not ignore breast lumps and must consult a doctor. Faced with so many possible causes, what is a doctor going to do? The first step is to rule out the possibility of cancer. This done by two noninvasive procedures, a mammogram and an ultrasound examination of both breasts. Both breasts are done because a malignancy could have spread to the other breast. Regarding the psychology of gynecomastia, one male patient had this to say, “I found myself the only male sitting in a room occupied by women all waiting to have mammograms. It was an unusual experience. But I felt a connection with everyone in the room, all hoping to get the news there was no cancer found.” How long will it take to get the results of these procedures? It depends on the facility that performs them. Some fortunate patients will be referred to clinics where ultrasound technicians and radiologists immediately examine the tests and offer reports to patients before they leave – hopefully, with the diagnosis of gynecomastia, not cancer. In some cases, gynecomastia becomes so pronounced that steps are taken to remove breast tissue. This can be done by either surgery or liposuction. But in most cases of swollen and tender breast tissue in men, confirmation that cancer is not detected is reassurance enough. From there, the best treatment is patience while time and nature heal the problem. The most important message for men and women alike? Screening for breast lumps saves lives. Don’t neglect to do it.
