That win pit Dhesi against Zaman Anwar of Pakistan for gold. Dhesi, who’s family immigrated to Canada from India in the 1970s, had the heavy India crowd behind him in the match and was able to feed off their energy. Dhesi scored early and then, after giving up his only two points, found himself in a dominant position. He was able to turn it into a pin and took the win by fall, securing the first gold for Canadian wrestlers.

good. It was for the family and people back home. I know the Commonwealth Games are a big deal in Canada, so it felt good. I wrestled as hard as I could,” Dhesi said after the win. “Now, I just want to carry this momentum from here and at Pan Ams (where Dhesi also won gold) into the World Championships. I feel very carefree, I will wrestle as hard as I can and whatever the outcome is, it is.”

Amar Dhesi, who represented Canada at the Tokyo Olympics, led Canada’s men team. He recently won gold at the 2022 Pan-American Championships.

AMAR Dhesi (125 kg) of Surrey and Nishan Randhawa (97 kg) of Abbotsford won gold medals, while Jasmit Phulka of Abbotsford bagged a bronze medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.

Nishan Randhawa drew a tough opponent in the quarterfinal in Deepak Nehra of India. It was a backand-forth match but Randhawa was

able to pull out a late victory, with a force out in the final second. After a failed challenge by India, Randhawa’s win was confirmed 8-6.

9-3 and held on to win gold!

Randhawa used that momentum in his semifinal match against Pakistan’s Tayab Raza. Randhawa never let Raza into this one, winning on points 7-0.

As a result of umpteen initiatives by the pres ent government, hundreds of archaic laws have been dispensed with. Likewise, for the first time Indian exports of goods and services reached over $600 billion in 2021-22 despite the global problems and supply constraints due to the pandemic and the ongoing Eurasian war. India has always been a trading nation and is working hard to reclaim that status yet again.

India has the largest young aspirational pop ulation and the fastest growing market econ omy which is ready to cater to the needs of teeming billion plus people who take pride in the Indian story.

India, before the advent of the colonial pow ers, contributed to over a quarter of the glob al GDP that went down to less than 4% when

ALONG with this, India is also focusing on self-reliance with a global footprint - ‘At manirbhar Bharat’, especially in manufac turing sector and to be an integral part of alternate value and supply chains which are resilient and reliable for the national interest and the global good. In this context, India’s participation in the I2U2, Quad, Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) and other re gional and sub regional connectivity orient ed frameworks acquires a renewed salience and focus. Likewise, vigorous move to ex peditiously implement INSTC (North South Transport corridor), strategic connectivity projects like Chabahar in Iran to Afghanistan to Central Asia and Europe or North-Eastern India to ASEAN corridors aim at providing crucial trade and economic linkages for In dia’s centrality in global supply chains. As India wishes to lead through the AI driv en Industrial revolution 4.0, its Digital In dia, Innovate, Start Up and Stand Up India campaigns have become the hallmark of a unique digital footprint. Some initiatives like the access to internet, banking at the door step and direct payment into accounts to nearly a billion Indians are the game changer and are providing the leadership position to India in the comity of nations. In the last over seven decades, India has engi neered Green, Yellow and White Revolutions with continuous upgradation in technology in the agricultural and food processing areas not only to meet demand of a burgeoning population but has also emerged as a net exporter and helper to the world. India has also emerged as credible nuclear and space power in the world- the tools it intends to employ for the global good.

75 years of free India are replete with stu pendous achievements. These become more remarkable because the country had to make a ‘Tryst with Destiny’ bringing out an exploited 1/6th of the humanity from the va garies of the colonial yoke. Hence, the major challenges included socio-economic devel opment and nation building through educa tion and industrial development, eradication of poverty, food self-sufficiency in a drought hit era with a divided nation by the colonial masters who were forced to lift their colonial shackles by the Gandhian non-violent move Thisments.was even more difficult as the world was divided into Cold War adversaries and bloc politics which India could not have sub scribed to. Hence, India not only stood and helped in the emancipation of a large num ber of colonized countries but also created a third way with a more equitable force in the form of NAM (Non-Aligned Movement) to serve national interest and cause of peace and development especially for the develop ing and underdeveloped world. It became a champion for the rights of oppressed people at the international fora while discharging its obligations as a responsible international ac tor and a voice of reason.

1. Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum and seven of his Safe Surrey Coalition members won the 2018 municipal election fair and square on the pledge that they would form a Surrey police force to replace the RCMP. In fact, all the eight new Councillors, including the lone one from Surrey First, voted to ditch the RCMP at the very first Council meeting.

Locke later ran as the federal Liberal Party candidate in Fleetwood—Port Kells in the 2006 and the 2008 federal elections, but lost both times to Conservative incumbent Nina Grewal.

AND now, Keep The RCMP In Surrey (KTRIS) is (no surprise, of course!) officially endorsing Surrey Connect mayoral candidate Brenda Locke and her team who support the RCMP that is being steadily replaced by the new Surrey Police Service – although there is NO WAY that this transitioning process can be reversed.

3. Among the tactics that the pro-RCMP forces then started resorting to was the call for a referendum on the change in policing. However, legally, only the City can authorize such a ref-

ALSO, the fact is that Locke has a long history of being a political loser. She got only about 13,600 votes when she ran for Surrey Council in 2014 – she was No. 17. She was defeated by not only the successful

Surrey First candidates but also candidates like Rina Gill, Kal Dosanjh, Narima Dela Cruz and Inothers.the last municipal election, as everybody knows, she won only by joining McCallum’s Safe Surrey Coalition team and ended up getting more than 40,000 votes.

erendum – the Province or the federal government cannot.

Locke, who defeated incumbent NDP MLA Sue Hammell by less than 2,000 votes in 2001, lost to Hammell in the 2005 election by more than 5,000 votes.

Surrey Police Service officers steadily taking over. Photo: SPS

RCMP in Surrey showed how hopeless that cause was right from the start. And its organizers were disgraced and humiliated when it was revealed that the RCMP’s National Police Federation had donated more than $104,000 of the total of $118,264 that the campaign received, according to financial documents filed to Elections BC. The real people of Surrey forked out just over $14,000. Some popular support, indeed!

Earlier, the only time that Locke won was in 2001 as a Liberal candidate in Surrey-Green Timbers when the NDP was at an all-time low and Gordon Campbell’s Liberals won 77 of the 79 Assembly seats.

2. The Police Act says that any city with a population of more than 5,000 can decide what type of police force they want. So, when the City of Surrey approached the Provincial Government with its proposal, the latter had no option but to give the go-ahead. In spite of three Councillors ditching McCallum’s group, the mayor still continued to control the majority vote in Surrey City Council.

COQUITLAM RCMP on Tuesday released video surveillance photos of the two sus pects that helped Rabih (Robby) Alkhalil es cape from North Fraser Pretrial Jail on July Police21.

The hearing panel also found that Grewal breached Law Society Rules related to Law Society reporting requirements.

The van left North Fraser Pre-trial at approxi mately 6:48 p.m., and travelled westbound on Kingsway Avenue.

Investigators are dealing with the possibility that Alkhalil is trying to flee by using his con nections across Canada, the United States, Europe and Asia.

Alkhalil, who was extradited from Greece in 2015, was serving a life term for murder for his role in the 2012 murder of Johnny Raposo in Toronto’s Sicilian Sidewalk Café on College Street. His 2017 trial heard that Raposo was killed for a 200 kg shipment of cocaine from Mexico.

In addition to the suspension, the panel ordered conditions on Grewal’s practice, including requirements related to trust su pervision and educational courses in trust accounting and practice management and ordered Grewal not to engage in residential real estate conveyances.

In imposing a two-month suspension rather than a lengthier suspension, the panel con sidered evidence establishing that none of Grewal’s misconduct arose from dishonesty or deliberate misconduct for personal gain. The panel also considered evidence of a clear connection between Grewal’s mis conduct and mental health issues related to childhood and personal trauma, and that the consequences flowed from his decision to report that trauma.

Making EVs more affordable for people

“During the pandemic, our volunteer pool became depleted due to restrictions, so with fire season upon us, our goal is to get 100 volunteers in the next few months that we can draw on.”

Community Engagement volunteers focus largely on educating the public on impor tant fire safety and emergency prepared

that some families and busi nesses require electric vehicles with greater capacity and range, we’re expanding eligibili ty to include larger vehicles like pickup trucks and vans. We’re also expanding our electric vehicle charging network, so that no matter where you are in the province, there will be a charging station nearby. Here in Richmond, the number of charging sites has increased from 30 to 76 since March 2017, and the num ber of public and semi-public plugs available has tripled from 71 to 233.

Increasing the maximum rebate from $3,000 to $4,000 means that combined with federal rebates, British Columbians could save up to $9,000 on their electric vehicle. For many, this makes a real difference when it comes to de ciding to buy or lease an electric vehicle. More than 90% of British Columbians are eligible for provincial electric vehicle rebates under this new process. By implementing income verification, we are ensuring that the maximum rebates are received by those who will most benefit from them. Even the highest-income earners who are not eligible for rebates will see a significant reduction in costs, including gas and maintenance, when making the switch to an electric vehicle. Our government’s CleanBC Go Electric Pas senger Vehicle Program extends beyond making electric vehicles affordable. We have also expanded the CleanBC Go Electric EV Maintenance Training program in 2022 to more colleges in B.C., which will provide more automotive technicians with opportu

nities to upgrade their skills to work on elec tric vehicles. Seven schools across the prov ince are offering this program. With the highest reported uptake rates of electric vehicles across North America, B.C. is a leader in the movement to end our reli ance on fossil fuels. Because of our CleanBC Go Electric programs and rebates, electric vehicles on B.C. roads have increased from 5,000 in 2016 to more than 85,000 today. We continue to support British Columbians as they make the switch to cleaner forms of transportation.

IANSlife asked Gurnaney how important the Indian market is for TimHeHortons.replied: “With over five decades of expertise in coffee, Tim Hortons is a global brand from Canada with a presence in over 5,100 locations across 13

"In March 2022, we announced our intent to open hundreds of stores in India over the next ten years. Today's news is the first step in that exciting commitment.

"With over 55 years of coffee heritage, Tim Hortons has captured the hearts and taste buds of Canadians, and we are confident our guests in India will love our premium quality coffee and food. Entering India shows our ongoing commitment to serving more

H.E. Cameron MacKay, High Commissioner for Canada to India, said: "Millions of Canadians have enjoyed Tim Hortons for decades; now it's time to share with India! Tim Hortons long-awaited launch here is a sign of the close relationship between Canada and India, and between Canadians and Indians. Indians can now enjoy a taste of what is an essential part of growing up in Canada, and we are incredibly proud to support their arrival."Canada's largest restaurant chain operating in the quick service industry, feels international expansion has become an increasing priority for the brand. Over recent years the brand has introduced its well-loved offerings to guests beyond Canada and the United States. Currently Tim Hortons has more than 5,300 restaurants across 13 countries, including the Middle East, China, the UK, Mexico, Spain, Thailand and Philippines.

Tim Hortons in India, opens part of an exclusive agreement with a joint venture entity owned by Apparel Group and Gateway Partners. "We are very excited to bring Tim Hortons to India." said Thiago Santelmo, President RBI EMEA, parent company of Tim Hortons.

New Delhi (IANSlife): Canada's iconic coffee and baked goods brand established in 1964, Tim Hortons, opens its first outlet in India today, August 11. Known worldwide for its signature coffee, iconic beverages and delicious food, the brand has introduced a host of menu options for the Indian market, including a taste of their iconic beverages like the creamy and rich French Vanilla, the Iced Capp -- a blended frozen coffee beverage. Along with beverages prepared-to-order food and baked goods including delicious bitesized morsels of traditional donuts called Timbits will be available. The coffee shops at Select Citywalk Mall (Saket) and DLF Cyberhub (Gurugram) will feature warm and comfortable interiors and a welcoming environment inspired by the brands Canadian origins.

“Our entry in India is very crucial and will represent the brand's 4th country in the APAC region, which already has over 350 stores. With our launch in India, we will be building on another successful international expansion after China, Saudi Arabia and the UK. The Indian coffee market is expected to reach over $4.2 billion in size by 2025, with out-of-home consumption accounting for around 20 per cent of the market. The Indian coffee retail chain market is expected to reach the $850 million mark by 2025, hence India is an important market for Tim Hortons. Patna: Janata Dal(U) leader Nitish Kumar took oath as Chief Minister for eighth time on Wednesday with Tejashwi Yadav as his Deputy in the cabinet again at state Raj Bhawan in Pat na. Governor Phagu Chouhan administered the oath to them.

“None of the passengers or crew was aware of the act. The matter came to the airline’s notice on January 24 through social media posts,” it added. The matter was referred to the Internal Commit tee constituted as per the provisions of Civil Avia tion Requirements (CAR) on handling of unruly passengers (not consisting of any SpiceJet em ployee). The said passenger was put on a no fly ing list by the airline for 15 days in February.

Leaders of all seven mahagathbandhan parties were present during the oath-taking ceremony along with the family members of Yadav. After taking the oath, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, while speaking to media persons, said that he would not be there (as CM) in 2024.

Earlier in 2015, both had taken oath together for the same. But in 2017, Kumar played a turncoat and had joined hands with the BJP. The rest of the cabinet of ministers is likely to take oath lat er. “The oath of other ministers may happen in a day or two, before the inauspicious month of Kharwans which begins from August 12”, said a senior RJD leader.

It is also said that as many as 13 leaders from JD(U) would take oath as Ministers in the new Cabinet.

Made almost two years ago the producers, like the James Bond owners, made the right choice to wait until fears of Covid subsided and things opened up to release this soon to be classic movie. And that need for speed still exists for speed merchant Pete Maver ick. Whether he’s riding a classic MiG 21, the most advanced American fighter planes in the Navy or taking the seat of a classic Kawasaki motorcycle once again Tom Ter rific is in fine form.

Tom Cruise ( Risky Business), the most bankable box office star since Sean Con nery left the original James Bond series is terrific. On an emotional and personal level Cruise exceeds all expectations. Tremen dous casting with Miles Tellers as a pilot on edge and Jon Hamm as a commander out for blood make this continuation of the Top Gun saga a film to be rightfully proud of.
