BC Coroners Service.
“Tragically, lost. in the seventh year of this pub lic heath emergency, as we are experi encing increasing numbers of deaths in July, our province has now lost more than 10,000 lives to illicit drugs since April 2016,” Lapointe said.
Vancouver Coastal Health Authorities (352 and 297 deaths respectively), making up 59% of all such deaths in the first six months of 2022. However, rates of death remain high throughout the province, with North ern Health reporting a rate of death of 53 per 100,000 residents, and four of five health au thorities reporting rates above the provincial average (42 deaths per 100,000 residents).
“The ever-increasing toxicity of the unregu lated, illicit drug market is taking a heartbreaking toll on the lives and well-being of members of our communities across the province,” said Lisa Lapointe, Chief Coro ner, on Tuesday. “Deaths due to toxic drugs in the first half of 2022 have surpassed the number of deaths experienced in the same period in 2021, putting our province, once again, on track for a record loss of life.”
The majority of illicit drug toxicity deaths have been recorded in either the Fraser or
Lisa Lapointe
“These were men, women and youth from all walks of life. They lived in our neigh bourhoods, worked in our workplaces and played on our sports teams. Some lived or dinary lives, while others faced enormous challenges. All of them fell prey to the lethal supply of illicit drugs that is omnipresent. As recommended by the subject matter ex perts on the recent Death Review Panel, it is imperative that we urgently provide access to safer supply across our province. It’s only when we drastically reduce people’s reli ance on the profit-driven, illicit drug trade, that we will save lives and turn the trajec tory of this crisis around.”
* By health service delivery area, in 2022, the highest rates of death have been record ed in Vancouver, Thompson Cariboo, North ern Interior, Northwest and Fraser East.
Additional key preliminary findings are be low. Data are subject to change as addition al toxicology results are received:
* Analysis of post-mortem toxicology results shows no indication that prescribed safe supply is contributing to illicit drug deaths regionally or provincially.
Illicit drug toxicity is the leading cause of unnatural death in British Columbia and is second only to cancers in terms of years of life
* By local health area, in 2022, the highest rates of death have been recorded in Lil looet, Mission, Terrace, Cariboo/Chilcotin and Powell River.
The number of lives lost to toxic drugs in B.C. between January and June is the high est ever recorded in the first six months of a calendar year. More than three quarters (78%) of the lives lost in 2022 were male and nearly the same percentage (73%) were be tween the ages of 30-59. On average, more than six lives have been lost to illicit drugs every day this year.
* In 2022, 84% of illicit drug toxicity deaths have occurred inside (56% in private resi dences and 27% in other inside residences including social and supportive housing, single-room occupancies, shelters, and ho tels and other indoor locations), while 15% have occurred outside (in vehicles, side walks, streets, parks, etc.)
Jennifer Charlesworth, Representative for Children and Youth, said: “Children, youth and young adults in B.C. are being hit hard by the toxic drug supply, both directly and indirectly. In addition to the deaths of young people, children and youth are losing par ents, caregivers, family members and friends to the crisis, and each time they do, it has devastating and far-reaching impacts on their lives. This is especially pronounced for First Nations, Métis, Inuit and urban In digenous young people. Government must prioritize a full array of mental-health and substance-use services for young people, including harm reduction. Nothing short of that will do.”

Shimla (IANS): Asserting that the time for change has come in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday urged the people of the hill state to follow the example of Punjab and elect a pro-people and result-oriented government in the upcoming assembly polls. Addressing a gathering here, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia, said the time has come when the people of Himachal should make a choice between the ‘performance’ of AAP, which is working tirelessly and lip service of traditional parties, who have ruined the country. Out of this, 9,000 acres have been already reclaimed and rest will be freed from illegal encroachment soon.
Mann said 41 packages with around 100 clinical tests are being offered to the people free of cost in these clinics.
He reminded the people that Rs 1.5 million promised by Modi in every account has not yet come but people have suffered a lot due to unplanned demonetization. He also hit out at the Prime Minister for failing to check rise in prices of essential goods.

The total motor output of the new twin electric motors is up more than 40%, giving the vehicle exhila rating power balanced between front and rear wheels. It allows for up to 54% power to the rear wheels to help Canadians conquer even the toughest winters.
Also new to the all-new Mit subishi Outlander PHEV is a third row seat for maximum flexibility as standard equipment. Capturing the success of the new Mitsubishi Outlander, The Outlander PHEV adds to its appeal with dramatic exterior and luxurious interior de sign plus a long list of safety and personality inspired convenience features. New Delhi: In a major organisational rejig, BJP president J.P. Nadda on Wednesday announced the party’s new parliamentary board, the highest decision-making authori ty in the party, and the central election com mittee that goes into candidate selections. The exclusions in the reshuffle carry more significance than inclusions as former Chief Ministers B.S. Yediyurappa and Sarbananda Sonowal gained a spot.
ery effort to restore the glory of Punjab. The Chief Minister said in order to provide quality and timely health services to the people, the state government is dedicating 75 Aam Aadmi clinics to mark 75th Indepen dence Day.
In the vacancies thus filled, interestingly, the addition is former Karnataka Chief Minister B. S. Yediyurappa, whose inclu sion acknowledges the fact that he is still a force to reckon with in State politics. He has also been made a member of the elec tion committee. Sonowal’s elevation to the parliamentary board is a bid to diversify the membership, as he belongs to a tribal com munity from Assam, said party sources.
He said towards this end, the state govern ment has adopted a multi-pronged approach that is aimed at transforming government schools into ‘Schools of Eminence’.
In a first in the party’s recent history, a Sikh member, Iqbal Singh Lalpura, has been ap pointed to the board, a nod to the protest movement against the farm laws (repealed later) and the political exigencies in Punjab.
Mann said that a string of gems like Baba Ram Singh, Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh, Shaheed Rajguru, Shaheed Sukhdev, Lala Lajpat Rai, Shaheed Udham Singh, Kartar Singh Sarabha, Diwan Singh Kalepani and many others, shed their blood to achieve an independent nation.

He said Punjabis led the nation from the front whenever India faced any challenge from internal or external aggression. It is a known fact that the hard working and resilient farm ers of the state have played a crucial role in making the country self-reliant in food pro duction, Mann added.

He reminded the people that these great na tional heroes and martyrs relentlessly fought to free the country from the shackles of the British regime. He said questioning the cre dentials of martyrs is an unpardonable crime.
A prov incial by-election has been called in the Surrey South electoral district for Saturday, September 10, 2022.
In the 15-member election committee, the surprise inclusion has been that of Maha rashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fad navis, an acknowledgement that he needed validation at the national level, in order to offset the disappointment felt by some quarters in the Maharashtra BJP over his be ing overlooked for the post of Chief Minister. The board in its previous form had five va cancies due to the passing away of senior leaders Arun Jaitley, Sushma Swaraj, and Ananth Kumar and the election of M. Ven kaiah Naidu as the Vice-President and the appointment of Thawar Chand Gehlot as Karnataka Governor. In the 11-member board, not constituted since 2014 when Home Minister Amit Shah was party presi dent, Nadda, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Shah, Rajnath Singh and general secretary (organisation) B. L. Santhosh continue as before.

Sadly, most people are largely unaware of how type 2 diabetes affects later life. Helpful medi cal advances are undergoing clinical trials. But there’s little hope for healthy longevity without losing weight and preventing the development of unnecessary complications.
WHAT is the greatest hazard to your longev ity? Ask around and you will get a variety of answers: heart disease, cancer, genetics, or humankind’s own folly with warfare and plan etary destruction. But it has become taboo to mention obesity. Yet, for decades, this column has stressed that obesity is the greatest health hazard of them all.
What is going to happen worldwide? With obesity unaddressed, we face a medical di saster that is bankrupting health care systems. And don’t believe this won’t affect you if you do not protect your own family.

Amid all of society’s penchants for weight gain, daily unrelenting efforts of individuals to maintain healthy weights would save more lives than any other prescription. Supportive public policies and improved private sector re sponsibility would help.
Unfortunately, many families having lost a loved one think it has been due to coronary at tack, stroke, pneumonia, a complication dur ing surgery, or being elderly. But this is to miss the lifestyle factors that culminated over time to set the stage for drama. The death certifi cate never lists obesity at the cause of death. The deception is fooling families and the gen eral public too.

whereas obesity is a state of be ing, diseases are downright awful. Take type 2 diabetes, for example. For many diabetics, the pandemic has been particularly brutal, killing many people having “underlying conditions”. But diabetes also has terrible complications of its own, causing blindness, kidney failure, and leg amputations due to gangrene.
Today, all over the world, people are disturb ingly obese and ill. Among the root issues is one simple fact. People are devouring too many calories, too often combined with sed entary lifestyles. It’s not hard to see. Why do we shy away from a focus on obesity and shine the spotlight instead on heart dis ease, diabetes or other conditions associated with obesity? In part, it’s because it’s wrong to play the blame game. That, and the medical world is designed to treat diseases, not prevent Furthermore, them.

There is a huge disconnect between what journalists and medical experts report in the news and the corresponding reality for most people. Eye-opening evidence presented by Our World in Data, a scientific online publica tion focusing on large global problems, shows that the news provides “a near-instantaneous snapshot of single events”, whereas persistent, large-scale trends never make the headlines. To illustrate, the publication presents data on what caused deaths in the U.S. in 2016, side by side with data on Google searches and me dia coverage in the New York Times and The Guardian. In fact, 60% of deaths were attrib uted to heart disease and cancer, while only 0.9% and less than 0.01% of deaths were due to homicide or terrorism, respectively. But in both journals, homicide and terrorism com bined for about 60% of coverage, and heart dis ease got only 2%. (Obesity wasn’t mentioned.) Few people are trained nutritionists. But unless living like a mole, you should know that to lose weight you have to stop eating high quantities of high calorie meals and sugary desserts such as cookies, ice cream, cakes and pies. Com bine smaller, smarter caloric intake with daily walking or other moderate exercise, and then you’ll be happy to see the scale numbers de creasing. This works.
COMMON SENSE HEALTH – W. GIFFORD-JONES, MD AND DIANA GIFFORD-JONES
Ignoring hazards leaves little hope for longevity
Health authorities should be supporting this objective by alerting the public to the mindboggling negative consequences of a do-noth ing approach.
