LIBERAL Leader Justin Trudeau’s aim of garnering a majority government seemed this week to be threatened by the NDP. It is going to be interesting to see if NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh can achieve his objective of winning enough seats to deny Trudeau a majority government and force him this time to share power with the NDP. Trudeau had snubbed the NDP after the last federal election. However, with more than four weeks to go until election day on September 20, Canadians still have plenty of time to decide which way to roll as a raft of polls show trends across the country: Should they end a feeling of uncertainty and hand Trudeau a majority to govern freely? Or, should they give the NDP enough seats to force Trudeau to, in effect, listen to a second opinion, too? At this stage, looking at the trends in Ontario and Quebec, it appears the Conservatives will have a tough time getting a majority of seats, though things could change. ABACUS Data -- in a national survey of 1,500 Canadian adults (August 12 to 16) with about 30% of the interviews done after the election announcement on Sunday -- found that if an election were held now, the Liberals would win 33% of the vote (down 4 from Abacus Data’s last measurement point), the Conservatives 28% (unchanged), the NDP 22% (up 2), the Green Party 5% (unchanged) and the Bloc Quebecois at 31% in Quebec (9 points higher than in their last survey). The Greens are at 7%. • In Alberta, 39% would vote Conservative compared with 29% for the NDP and 23% for the Liberals, and 6% for the People’s Party. • In Manitoba and Saskatchewan, the Conservatives lead the Liberals and NDP by almost 30 points, 48% to 19% and 19%. • The Liberals (with 36%) have a 6-point lead over the Conservatives (30%) in Ontario, with the NDP at 24% and the

Green Party at 5%. The People’s Party is at 5% in Ontario. • In Quebec, the Liberals lead with 34%, followed by the BQ (31%), the Conservatives (14%) and the NDP at 10%. The Greens are at 8% in Quebec. • In the Atlantic provinces, the Liberals (47%) are well ahead of the NDP (26%) and the Conservatives (20%).

ABACUS Data found that there had been a five-point drop in the number of Canadians feeling the country is headed in the right direction, as the number of COVID cases rose over the last week. Now, 41% feel the country is headed in the right direction while 42% feel it’s off on the wrong track. Abacus Data’s Bruce Anderson and David Coletto said that downward shift in mood is likely attributable to growing concerns

about the COVID-19 pandemic. When asked whether they are getting more or less worried about the pandemic over the past few days, 38% say they are getting more worried – up 5-points in a week, and 23-points in a month. Today, 24% believe the worst of the pandemic is still to come (a 9-point increase in a month). Regarding government approval, today 44% approve of the job being done by the Trudeau government, while 41% disapprove – a 4-point increase in those disapproving over the past week. Regarding leaders’ impression, Trudeau enjoys a positive impression among 40% and negative impressions among 44%, for a net score of -3. Negative impressions of Trudeau are up 3 points since last week.

BRITISH Columbia’s first public human rights inquiry will examine the disturbing surge of hate in the pandemic, Human Rights Commissioner Kasari Govender announced on Wednesday. BC’s Office of the Human Rights Commissioner (BCOHRC) has been monitoring hate incidents as part of our core strategic priority work on hate and white supremacy. Since early 2020, there has been a significant increase in reported hate-related incidents in B.C., highlighting an urgent need for an Inquiry into Hate in the Pandemic. “It is critical for all of us to be better prepared to prevent and respond to hate during global health, economic and social crises to protect our human rights during turbulent times,” Govender said. The intent of the inquiry is to examine hate in all its forms: not only racism and racial hate, but also hate directed at groups protected under B.C.’s Human Rights Code. For example, hate perpetuated on the basis of religion, gender identity, disability, Indigeneity, sexual orientation, pov-

er factual and expert evidence, to hear directly from people impacted through witness statements or surveys and to make recommendations to address the human rights issues raised. An inquiry is not a court of law and cannot make legal findings of guilt or liability or compel governments to accept inquiry recommendations. This inquiry will take the form of a year-long investigation, and is the first conducted by an independent human rights commissioner in B.C. Inquiry submissions open this fall

Kasari Govender Official photo erty or homelessness. According to BC’s Office of the Human Rights Commissioner, a public inquiry is an official review of major events or issues to establish facts and make recommendations for change. It is an opportunity to delve deeply into the human rights implications of a particular incident or issue, to gath-

Due to the challenging nature of the inquiry topic, BC’s Office of the Human Rights Commissioner will not hold open public hearings. Instead, it will solicit expert and public testimony virtually to protect privacy and embed trauma informed practices. The office will inform the public on how they can participate in the inquiry later this fall once the submission period formally opens. In preparing the inquiry and the Terms of Reference, the office con-

sulted 23 community groups with important insights into hate. With their input, it decided to focus its investigation on what has caused an apparent rise in hate incidents in B.C. during the pandemic, what kinds of hate individuals and communities have experienced, how we can address, eliminate or prevent hate in times of crisis and how well our institutions, policies and laws have responded. “Many of us are uncomfortable acknowledging hate because we want to think of our country as a peaceful, respectful place. The truth is that hate is here, and it is growing,” Govender said. “Fear and ignorance underlie much of the rise of hate and white supremacy in B.C. Combating hate in all its forms requires addressing fear, systemic inequality and ignorance through an evidence-based approach to change.” At the close of the Inquiry, the Commissioner will release a final report with recommendations to address, prevent and manage outbreaks of hate during times of social upheaval now, during the COVID-19 pandemic and in future.

‘Some indication that rise of COVID-19 cases is increasing anxiety and mood of public seems to be shifting’ CONTINUED FROM 3 Jagmeet Singh enjoys a positive impression among 39% and finds negative impressions among 24% for a net +15. Impressions of Singh are largely unchanged from last week. Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole enjoys a positive impression among 20% and finds negative impressions among 41%, for a net score of -21. Impressions of O’Toole are also largely unchanged from last week. UPSHOT According to Bruce Anderson: “We’ll evaluate events on a continu-

ous basis during this sprint to Election Day. At this point, I’m hesitant to conclude anything about a shift in mood, we’re in the middle of summer, engagement levels are uncertain, and parties and leaders have only begun to make their pitches. I’ll continue to watch for the same things – will Jagmeet Singh be able to turn interest in him into capturing Liberal votes in key battleground regions, will Erin O’Toole be able to overcome hesitancy about his party and himself personally and will Justin Trudeau make a persuasive and galvanizing case for the policy choices he’s advocating especially around vaccines and affordable

child care.” According to David Coletto: “Within a few weeks, a 12-point Liberal lead has shrunk to a 5-point lead as the race in Ontario and BC has tightened. The NDP has gained a few points while the Conservatives remain stuck just below 30%. “Given that only a portion of this survey was done after the election call, it’s too early to say whether the opposition parties’ criticism of the early election call is having much impact, but there’s some indication that the rise of COVID-19 cases is increasing anxiety and the mood of the public seems to be shifting. “This shift may ultimately play to

the Liberal Party’s advantage as previous research has found most think the government has handled the pandemic well and support for vaccine mandates is strong across the country. It might expose it to concerns about holding an election during the 4th wave of the pandemic.” The Abacus Data survey was conducted from August 12 to 16. The margin of error for a comparable probability-based random sample of the same size is +/- 2.6%, 19 times out of 20. The survey was commissioned and paid for by Abacus Data In

Amar Doman becomes the new owner of the BC Lions A British Columbia entrepreneur known for his business acumen and talent for seeing the big picture is the new owner of the British Columbia Lions of the Canadian Football League. Amar Doman, founder and sole shareholder of the Futura Corporation, was introduced on Wednesday at a media availability at the team’s practice facility. “I’m thrilled and excited by the opportunity before us, to build a winning team on the field, to be a positive force for a better British Columbia off the field, and to provide a great experience for our fans and our partners every step of the journey,” Doman told reporters. “The Lions are part of the fabric of this great province. I’m honoured to take on this role because of our team’s history. But I’m motivated, most of all, by the future I see ahead for this franchise. I am extremely excited to get started.” Known for his dedication to building shareholder value and his vision for long term thinking, Doman has built the Futura Corporation into one of the largest and fastest growing companies in Canada. He purchased the Lions from the estate of previous owner David Braley, the business icon and Canadian Football Hall of Famer who passed away last October.

Amar Doman Photo: BC Lions “Amar Doman is exactly the owner that David Braley wanted for the future of the BC Lions, a team he was proud to own and that he deeply loved,” said Grant Panchyson, Executor of David Braley’s estate.

“A resident of the Lower Mainland, Amar’s family has been in BC for more than 100 years, operating successful businesses throughout the province. I’m excited to see the team move forward.” As the controlling shareholder, Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO of Doman Building Materials, as well as the controlling shareholder and Chairman of the Board of Tree Island Steel, Doman brings more than 30 years experience in building materials, lumber, and forest products manufacturing industries, and in public and private investments with an employee count in North America approaching 3,000. Active in industry organizations, he was formerly a Director on the National Board of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. “This is a great day for British Columbia, for the Lions and for the Canadian Football League,” said Randy Ambrosie, Commissioner of the CFL. “On behalf of our Board of Governors, and our fans across the country, I want to welcome Amar and his family to the CFL family. I have every confidence he will be a strong owner who will make this franchise, and our league, stronger.” Ambrosie publicly thanked everyone who has worked hard to maintain the franchise in the wake of Braley’s passing.

“The support and patience shown by David’s estate, led by Grant, the hard work of Lions’ President Rick LeLacheur and the Lions’ staff, and the dedication of the players, coaches and the entire football operation, especially as we all navigated the challenges presented by the pandemic, are all a testament to David’s legacy and his vision for the future,” he said. “Now, the future has arrived in the person of Amar Doman. We look forward to working with him to move this great franchise forward and to help us build the Canadian Football League of the future.” AMAR Doman is the son of Ted Doman and nephew of Herb Doman, who along with a third brother Gordon, founded Doman Industries in 1953, the company was one of North America’s largest forest based, trucking, saw mill and pulp mill operators. Born in Victoria, Amar lives in West Vancouver. He is married and has three young children, 11, 9 and 7. For more on Amar Doman, visit our website voiceonline.com. (Courtesy of Matt Baker, BC Lions)

Falcon calls on Horgan to return from vacation to support BC communities impacted by wildfires BC Liberal leadership candidate Kevin Falcon sent a letter to Premier John Horgan on Tuesday calling on him to return from his vacation and provide further support for communities impacted by some of the worst wildfires this province has seen. “Over the past couple months, communities across BC have been devastated by the over 260 wildfires currently raging around our province,” said Falcon. “In this moment of crisis, people need to know that our leaders have their backs. And, disappointingly, you have been missing in action.” Falcon took aim at the NDP’s poor handling of the response to the fires, calling on the provincial government to take action after a lengthy delay in calling a provincial state of emergency. Falcon said: “For weeks, Horgan refused to call a state of emergency even though communities in the impacted regions were asking for that support.

THE NDP on Wednesday continued its attacks on BC Liberal leadership hopeful Kevin Falcon. The NDP government announced that it is moving forward with a toll-free replacement for the Massey Tunnel, putting to bed the rejected former BC Liberal government plan to make people pay tolls to cross between Richmond and Delta.

Hours of Operation: Mon-Fri: 10 AM - 6 PM Sat: 11 AM - 5 PM Sun: CLOSED

Aman Singh The NDP said despite costing commuters $1,500 per year, former Transportation Minister Falcon still defends introducing tolls on the Port Mann and Golden Ears bridges in 2012, telling Mike Smyth it was “the right thing to do.” (CKNW, The Mike Smyth Show, May 18, 2021, 9 a.m.) The NDP noted that even after his departure, Falcon’s legacy of using tolls to pay for river crossing continued. In addition to the Massey Tunnel replacement, the BC Liberals also proposed using tolls to pay for replacement of the Pattullo Bridge. The BC NDP government has rejected tolls for these and future road, bridge and tunnel infrastructure projects. Aman Singh, MLA for RichmondQueensborough, said: “I am proud that our government is moving forward with the Massey Tunnel project after listening to commuters and the Metro Vancouver Board who support the tollfree tunnel. We are moving forward with these important projects, but not at the expense of commuters who need to get to and from work each day. Unlike Kevin Falcon and other BC Liberals, we will put the needs of people first.”

Eight-lane toll-free tunnel to replace George Massey Tunnel A new eight-lane immersed-tube tunnel will replace the George Massey Tunnel on Highway 99, providing people a toll-free crossing that aligns with regional interests and improves transit, cycling and walking connections across the Fraser River. “A new crossing to replace the George Massey Tunnel will improve traffic flow and make travel by transit, walking and cycling more convenient and attractive, without costing commuters hundreds of dollars a year in unfair tolls,” said Rob Fleming, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure on Wednesday. “We’ve worked hard to make sure this is the right project for the region, and along with the other Highway 99 improvements getting underway, we’re getting people moving around in the region.” The new eight-lane tunnel will be in operation in 2030, with the cost estimated at $4.15 billion. Two of the eight lanes will be dedicated for bus rapid transit, and there will be separated pathways for cyclists and pedestrians. In the interim, the Province has started work to reduce traffic congestion by launching projects to improve transit and cycling infrastructure along the Highway 99 corridor and replace the Steveston Interchange. “This new crossing will ensure a strong and reliable connection along one of British Co-

Man shot by Vancouver police in downtown altercation A man was shot by Vancouver Police during an altercation downtown. A police officer also sustained serious injuries. tive transportation pathways are an exciting addition that will give more people safe and competitive alternatives to travelling by car.” Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation, said, “In addition to benefits for drivers, this new tunnel will bring a lane dedicated to bus rapid transit across the Fraser River on Highway 99 and also improve connections for cyclists and pedestrians. We have worked very closely with local municipalities, Indigenous leaders and TransLink to reach the right solution for the Metro Vancouver region.” Two options were presented in the business

case – an eight-lane tunnel and eight-lane bridge. Both options were given serious consideration. The tunnel was chosen as the best option, because it: * best meets regional vision/interests, as endorsed by the Metro Vancouver Board; * limits any new visual, noise, shading and lighting impacts over the life of the structure; * has the fewest impacts to agricultural land and will not introduce new navigational restrictions to the Fraser River; * allows for work to start immediately on the bottleneck areas of the Highway 99 corridor; * best facilitates the movement of trucks and cyclists with a much lower overall elevation change; and * provides protection from inclement weather for everyone who uses this crossing. The next step is to initiate the environmental assessment process, including ongoing engagement with Indigenous peoples and preparing for procurement. In the interim, improvements to transit and cycling infrastructure along Highway 99 will begin this fall, as will work on the new Steveston Interchange, which will be completed in 2025. Transportation Investment Corporation will lead the delivery of the George Massey Crossing Project on behalf of the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, and will provide the controls, practices and other oversight essential for this complex project.

resulting in shots being fired. A 25-year-old man suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment. The officer, a senior member of the department, also required hospitalization. Vancouver Police Department’s Major Crime Section and the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. are now investigating.

Strong ministry guidelines, data transparency essential to protect K–12 students and staff: BCTF AS COVID-19 Delta variant case numbers trend upwards, the BC Teachers’ Federation said on Thursday that it is continuing its push for strong health and safety mandates to protect students and staff returning to school in September. “We are hearing from more concerned families than ever before in this pandemic. They’re worried that their children who are too young to be vaccinated might be going back to school without enough protections in place,” said BCTF President Teri Mooring. “Things are most definitely not normal right now, so we can’t carry on as if they were.” The BCTF is advocating for a broad, province-wide mask mandate to start the school year, as well as ventilation improvements and cleaning of all high-touch surfaces during the school day.

Teri Mooring

The BCTF says it supports a regional approach to adjusting school safety measures as required over the school year, emphasizing that decisions must be informed by timely, transparent regional data and involve local stakeholders from the education and public health sectors. Factors such as community rates of vaccination and transmission must be considered, as public health continues to assert that school transmission reflects what is happening in the larger community. “Given what we know about the highly contagious Delta variant, we need to err on the side of caution and return to schools with everyone wearing masks. Vaccinations are integral to safer schools, but can’t be our only line of defense,” said Mooring. “We know for certain that none of the students

11 years old or younger will be vaccinated, and the vaccination rate for eligible youth still isn’t as high as we would all hope to see.” The BCTF is also urging government to implement the following measures ahead of the new school year: * School-based clinics to allow easy access to vaccinations for ages eligible students. * Funding for ventilation system upgrades to meet the minimum standards of MERV 13 filters, and HEPA filters in workspaces where MERV 13 filters are not possible. * N95 and/or medical-grade masks available for all students and staff upon request. * Comprehensive COVID-19 testing strategy that includes asymptomatic testing. * Designated time for health and safety training at all schools and worksites.

City of Delta celebrates grand opening of new North Delta Track and Field Facility DELTA Mayor George V. Harvie, Carla Qualtrough, federal Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion, and Ravi Kahlon, B.C. Minister of Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation, and other dignitaries celebrated the grand opening of the new North Delta Track and Field Facility on August 14. Located at North Delta Secondary School, this $8 million facility features eight competitive lanes, a natural grass infield for community

sports, a walking path on the perimeter of the track, spectator and community seating areas, tennis and pickleball courts, a public washroom and surrounding rain gardens. The City of Delta received more than $5.8 million in cost-share funding from the federal and provincial governments through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program – Community, Culture and Recreation Program towards this project.

INC. Delta Mayor George Harvie Qualtrough said: “I was excited to be a part of the official opening of the North Delta Track and Field Facility and thrilled to see our community come out to celebrate this event. This facility will provide our community with a top-notch venue for competitive training and community recreation programs. It is sure to become a gathering place where seniors, families, children and athletes come to be active, play and train. Infrastructure projects like the North Delta Track enrich our communities, making them more resilient and inclusive for the future. I am proud of the Government of Canada’s $3.2 million investment in a community hub that will

benefit Delta families for generations.” Kahlon said: “I heard from people in my community prior to my election in 2017 and over the past couple years, what a game-changer a track in North Delta would be. The opening of this track means people will have more access to fitness facilities and the opportunity to exercise, and also provides spaces for people to gather and connect. I’m proud to have worked with my community to deliver provincial funding for this project and to have worked alongside all levels of government to make it to this day.” Harvie said: “We promised a new track and field for North Delta and thanks to the support and partnerships from the federal and provincial governments and Delta School District, we have successfully delivered on this promise with a new, multi-million dollar community facility. This new amenity is a real testament to what can be achieved when we work together. As your Mayor and Council, we look forward to making future investments in recreation projects that continue to promote active lifestyles in people of all ages and abilities throughout Delta.” The North Delta Track and Field Facility is World Athletics compliant, the first of its kind in Delta, allowing athletes the ability to train locally, while supporting the broader community with the addition of new community recreation opportunities.

Stabbing involving teens in north Burnaby BURNABY RCMP are investigating a stabbing that injured a 17-year-old male. Police were called to the area of Hastings Street and Kensington Avenue around 11:40 p.m. on Saturday for reports of a stabbing. Officers found a victim suffering from a stab wound. Soon after, police located a suspect with the assistance of a police dog from the Integrated Police Dog Services (IPDS). The suspect, who is a 17-year-old Burnaby resident, was taken into custody. Police said that it’s believed dozens of young people had been partying in an outdoor area when a confrontation occurred between several people, possibly involving pepper spray and the use of racial slurs, before the stabbing happened. Nobody else was seriously injured. Investigators are working to determine whether the youth suspect and youth victim were known to each other. Neither can be publicly identified. Burnaby RCMP said they were aware of allegations from Vancouver Whitecaps FC indicating the attack was racially motivated. So far, a motive has not been determined by investigators. “This investigation is being taken very seriously. We are aware of the allegation that racial slurs may have been used during this altercation, which will form part of our investigation as we work to determine a motive. Our investigators are actively looking at all aspects of this incident,” said Inspector Matt Toews, Officer-in-Charge of Investigative Services with Burnaby RCMP. “We know there were other witnesses at this outdoor gathering that have not yet come forward. We need to speak with anyone who may have seen or heard anything Saturday night that could assist us in establishing a motive and timeline.” The 17-year-old victim remains in hospital in serious but stable condition. Burnaby RCMP’s Serious Crimes Unit is leading the investigation. A dedicated phone tip line has been set up by Burnaby RCMP. Witnesses with information are asked to call 604-646-9522. The Vancouver Whitecaps FC said in a statement that on Saturday, “three players of our Academy were assaulted at an outdoor gathering in what is believed to be a racially motivated attack. One player is in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to make a full recovery following surgery.” It added: “Enough is enough. We are heartbroken and sickened by the allegations and strongly condemn all forms of discrimination, racism, and hate. Such disgusting behaviour has absolutely no place in our community. We will do everything to support our players affected and urge the toughest punishment possible for those responsible.”

Liberals will extend and introduce new emergency supports for businesses and workers A re-elected Liberal government will extend and introduce new emergency supports for businesses and workers to make sure we all move forward and build back better for everyone, the Liberal Party announced on Monday. “Supporting businesses and their workers is at the heart of our plan to create jobs, strengthen the middle class, and grow the economy,” said Justin Trudeau, Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. “We’ve always been there for them, and the pandemic has been no different. We stepped-up to help them keep their lights on,

employees on the payroll, and communities safe – and we’re going to continue to support them for as long as it takes.” To provide more help to businesses that have been most impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and to support the creation of one million jobs, a re-elected Liberal government will: * Extend the Canada Recovery Hiring Program to March 31, 2022, so businesses can hire more workers and Canadians can get back on the job; * Provide Canada’s hard-hit tourism industry with temporary wage and rent support of up to

This plan builds on previous support that the Liberal government introduced during the pandemic, including: * Protecting over 5 million jobs with the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy; * Helping over 150,000 organizations with sup-

port for their rent, mortgage, and other expenses; * Providing additional support to businesses that were forced to close due to public health guidelines; * Supporting Canada’s hardest-hit industries, including the tourism and hospitality sectors, with low-interest loans; and * Providing businesses with up to $60,000 in partially forgivable, interest free loans so they could meet their daily expenses. “When we support Canada’s businesses, we support the workers, families, and communities that rely on them,” said Trudeau. “We stood with Canadian businesses through this tough time, but Erin O’Toole’s Conservatives tried to stand in our way. Only our Liberal team will keep fighting for our businesses and our workers, and build a better Canada for everyone.”

Jagmeet Singh commits to take back Trudeau’s CEO giveaways and help Canadians

FEDERAL NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh on Monday committed to take back the millions of dollars in bonuses Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau let the ultra-rich CEOs collect from federal money that was supposed to help protect people’s jobs. Singh said he’d redirect that money back to delivering services and supports to the families who need them. “Canadians have been struggling to pay their bills and keep a roof over their heads and now the pandemic has made things even worse. Instead of helping families afford the things they need like prescription drugs and visits to the dentist, Justin Trudeau let his elite friends and rich corporations help themselves to the subsidy. That’s wrong,” said Singh. “New Democrats will make sure profitable corporations and rich CEO and shareholders pay their fair share so Canadian families aren’t stuck

money to help them through the pandemic and demand repayment. Instead of going after people who were acting in good faith, Singh would ensure the corporate elite who took millions of dollars in Canadian Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) that were never intended for them, are made to give that money back. When the CEWS was introduced, New Democrats warned Trudeau that it would go to CEOs and not workers if there were no conditions on how the money was used. Instead, he gave

Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole releases Canada’s Recovery Plan CONSERVATIVE Party Leader Erin O’Toole on Monday released Canada’s Recovery Plan, the Conservative plan to secure the future. “This election is about who you think can get us out of the recession and rebuild the economy,” said O’Toole. “While the Liberals, NDP, Bloc, and Greens have no plan for Canada’s recovery after the pandemic, Canada’s Conservatives are relentlessly focused on creating jobs, increasing wages, and getting Canada’s economy back on track as quickly as possible.” He said that only Canada’s Conservatives, with Canada’s Recovery Plan, will get Canada back on track with their plan that will: * Secure jobs by recovering the one million jobs lost during the pandemic in one year. * Secure accountability by enacting a new anti-corruption law to clean up the mess in Ottawa. * Secure mental health by delivering our Canada Mental Health Action Plan. * Secure the country by building capacity here at home to handle any future pandemic or crisis. * Secure our economy by balancing the budget over the next decade. “In this election, Canadians have just two choices: more of the same with millions of

millions of dollars with no strings attached to the country’s biggest corporations while small businesses faced closure. Recovering millions of dollars that went to CEOs is just one piece of the NDP’s plan to make sure the ultra-wealthy pay their fair share, said the NDP. “When big corporations need help, Justin Trudeau is right there for them. But when everyday people need help –he keeps letting them down,” said Singh. “New Democrats have your back. We are fighting for you and your family.”

Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole announces month-long GST holiday CONSERVATIVE Leader Erin O’Toole on Tuesday announced a month-long GST holiday to provide pocketbook relief to Canadian families and support local retailers. “It’s getting harder and harder to afford the basics – food for the family, gas for the car, clothes for the kids,” said

O’Toole. “And it will only get harder this fall. As Canadians look forward to getting to spend more time with their families, they also know that the holiday season is an expensive time of year.” With Canada’s Recovery Plan, Canada’s Conservatives will implement a month-long GST holiday this December.

All purchases at retail stores will be tax-free for a month. This will put $1.5 billion back in Canadians’ pockets and will drive increased demand for products sold in store. Canadians will not need to fill out any onerous applications to qualify for this tax holiday. They will receive the five per cent discount directly on their

O’TOOLE also announced his commitment to fund the replacement of the George Massey Tunnel in the Metro Vancouver region. “For too long, the federal government has left addressing gridlock in Vancouver on the

back burner,” said O’Toole. “A Conservative government will immediately move to get shovels in the ground on critical infrastructure projects to create jobs and get the economy moving, and that includes replacing the George Massey Tunnel.” The Conservatives said that despite having the MP for Delta sitting at the Cabinet table for the entire span of the Justin Trudeau government, no progress has been made on this project. “For years, Canada’s Conservatives have called for the replacement of the Massey Tunnel, but that call has fallen on deaf ears,” said O’Toole. “I am proud to support the Massey Tunnel replacement project as part of our plan to secure the future and improve the lives of British Columbians.”

Three girls groped near Vancouver’s False Creek

VANCOUVER Police are searching for suspects after three girls were groped Tuesday afternoon near False Creek. “These girls were all near the seawall when a stranger on a bike grabbed them from behind and sexually assaulted them,” said Sgt. Steve Addison on Wednesday. “Each victim did the right thing by telling a trusted adult and reporting the incidents to police so an investigation could be launched immediately.” The string of assaults began at Granville Island around 4:30 p.m. Two girls, both 11, were walking near the seawall when an unknown man passed them on a bike and groped one girl from behind. Police believe the suspect then followed the victims to West 6th Avenue and Birch Street, where he groped the second girl. About 30 minutes later, a 15-year-old was running on the seawall near Science World when she, too, was groped by a stranger. The suspect from Granville Island was a fivefoot-four Asian man in his 30s with medium-

NEW

coloured skin and black-framed glasses. He was wearing a blue hat, a grey t-shirt, and dark shorts. He appeared unkempt and was riding a red and white bike. The suspect from the incident near Science World had dark hair and a dark ball cap, and was wearing a grey shirt, light-coloured or grey pants, and a dark backpack. He was also riding a red and white bike. Investigators don’t yet know whether the incidents near Granville Island and Science World are linked, but think there may be other victims who have not yet come forward. “We don’t know who is responsible for these crimes, but we’re working hard to gather evidence and identify the person or people responsible,” said Addison. “Until we know more, we’re encouraging people to be aware and to immediately call 9-1-1 if they feel unsafe or have information about a crime.” Anyone with information about these sexual assaults is asked to call VPD’s Sex Crimes Unit at 604-717-0601.

Jagmeet Singh says he will make housing more affordable for families NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh on Wednesday vowed to get big money out of Canada’s housing market and help young Canadians and families buy a home they can afford. “Every day, I hear from young people and their parents who worry they will never be able to afford to own a decent home,” said Singh. “They can barely afford to pay rent, let alone compete against big money investors in the housing market. [Liberal Leader] Justin Trudeau will keep protecting the interests

of the ultra-rich, but I’m ready to make the dream of owning a home a reality for Canadian families.” The NDP said Trudeau allowed rent to skyrocket and housing prices to balloon by more than 20 per cent in less than a year in Vancouver. He has let investors and corporations, often from overseas, take over the market and drive up the cost of housing in communities across Canada. In many cases they leave the houses empty while families struggle to find

Liberals say they will train 1,000 new community-based firefighters A re-elected Liberal government will support the training of 1,000 new community-based firefighters and the purchasing of new equipment to continue to fight the impacts of climate change across the country, Liberal Party Leader Justin Trudeau announced on Wednesday. The extreme heatwaves and wildfires across Canada this summer have underscored the urgency of fighting and adapting to climate change. Canada needs to take strong action to prepare for future extreme weather events, and keep Canadians safe and healthy, Trudeau said. “We are in a climate emergency. We’ve taken real action to protect our environment and grow our economy since 2015, but we know that we need to be bigger and bolder in the fight against climate change. The safety and security of Canadians is at stake, and we have to act now,” he added. A re-elected Liberal government will continue to fight the climate crisis and prepare for future extreme weather events to keep Canadians safe and healthy, by: * Training 1,000 new community-based firefighters to ensure we have the support we need in future fire seasons; * Working with provinces and territories to provide firefighters with the equipment they need to fight fires and stay safe, like Canadianmade planes to increase provincial aerial firefighting capacity; * Helping Canadians make their homes more resilient from climate change, through retrofits and upgrades; and * Partnering with the private sector to innovate

climate adaptation, including by lowering insurance premiums that would save Canadians money. This builds on the work that the Liberal government has been doing to fight climate change and protect Canadians from extreme weather events, including: * Deploying the Canadians Armed Forces to help monitor and contain wildfires in Western Canada; * Using the power of nature to cut pollution and make our communities more resilient to extreme weather, including by planting two billion trees; * Enhancing wildfire preparedness in Canada’s national parks to make our public spaces safer; * Advancing Canada’s first-ever National Adaptation strategy to reduce climate change risks to Canadians; * Supporting climate mitigation and rehabilitation projects to protect Canadians from climate-related disasters; and * Increasing the AgriRecovery funding to address additional costs faced by producers due to drought and wildfire. “Canadians are seeing the real impacts of climate change in their communities, but Erin O’Toole’s Conservatives deny that it’s even real,” said Trudeau. “In this important election, Canadians have a clear choice: Let the Conservatives take us backward to the inaction of the Harper years, or move forward with a real plan to fight the climate crisis, keep Canadians safe, and grow the economy. We have to move forward.”

a place to live. Singh was joined by Burnaby North-Seymour candidate Jim Hanson in Burnaby to outline the NDP’s housing plan. Singh and the NDP said they would go after big money investors by putting a 20 per cent Foreign Buyer’s tax on the sale of homes to individuals who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents. Singh would target money laundering and organized crime within the housing sector by making it harder to

hide behind nameless companies and giving regulators more teeth. An NDP government would also build 500,000 affordable homes in 10 years. “Mr. Trudeau has stood by while housing prices have spun out of control. We need to kick out big money investors to make room for working families and young people,” said Singh. “No one can win a bidding war against investors with deep pockets who are looking to turn a profit, not build a neighbourhood.”

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh promises to work with Indigenous communities to find every child WHILE visiting Cowessess First Nation in Saskatchewan, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh on Friday vowed to work with Indigenous people to find every child and to hold those responsible for the crimes of residential schools accountable. “Indigenous communities have been living with the legacy of residential schools for decades. Survivors have told us for years there were children who never came home. We cannot look away—we have to act,” said Singh. “People had a lot of hope [Liberal Leader] Justin Trudeau would do the work on reconciliation, instead he has dragged First Nations and residential school survivors to court. I’m committed to finding every child and will fight for justice.” The NDP said that Canadians have learned a lot about Trudeau over the last six years. Trudeau speaks about reconciliation and visits communities healing from the trauma of residential schools, but he won’t hold those

responsible for these crimes accountable. He has promised providing clean drinking water in First Nations yet after six years he’s failed to make it happen. The NDP said Singh will work in partnership with Indigenous communities who wish to search former residential school sites to ensure they receive adequate funding and resources. He is committed to going after those responsible by appointing a special prosecutor and will demand that all residential schools’ records from institutions such as governments and churches be released. He would also work to fully implement all outstanding recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report, including those that establish a National Council for Reconciliation to monitor and report on progress. “We must work hand in hand with Indigenous communities to find those children and seek justice,” said Singh. “Justin Trudeau’s inaction is a betrayal. I’m ready to do what’s right.”

Erin O’Toole Photo: Twitter “Many Canadians have struggled for months to find work, especially women and young people,” said O’Toole. “As the country reopens, our top priority is getting as many people back to work in good jobs, in every part of Canada, in every sector, as quickly as possible.” Once the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) ends in October, an O’Toole government will get Canadians back to work by introducing the Canada Job Surge Plan, an initiative that will pay up to 50 per cent of the salary of net new hires for six months. The wage subsidy will be at least 25 per cent and will increase based on how long a new employee has been out of work, reaching 50 per cent for those who have been unemployed for ten months or more. The Canada Job Surge Plan will apply to all sectors, but it will be especially helpful to those sectors hit first and hardest by the pandemic, such as hospitality and tourism. “The Canada Job Surge Plan is just the beginning of our plan to secure jobs across Canada, and to secure the future,” O’Toole said. “The Liberals, NDP and Greens don’t have a plan to get Canadians back to work. Canada’s Conservatives got us out of the last recession—we’ll get our country out of this one too.”

Trudeau says Liberals will move forward on 10 days of paid sick leave A re-elected Liberal government will move forward on 10 days of paid sick leave for federally-regulated workers and help Canadians return to work and school safely. The Liberal Party said on Friday that from supporting workers, to the rapid procurement of vaccines and personal protective equipment, Trudeau and their team have been keeping Canadians safe and healthy. Now, as people return to school and work, the Liberals will continue to do whatever it takes to ensure they are supported. “No one expected this crisis, but Canadians pulled together to support one another – and our Liberal government is doing everything we can to keep you safe and healthy,” said Liberal Party Leader Justin Trudeau, Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. “Now, as we finish the fight against COVID-19 and get the job done on vaccines, we need to move forward and find additional ways to support Canadians.” To ensure no one has to choose between staying safe and paying their bills, and to keep Canadians healthy, a re-elected Liberal government will: * Introduce 10 days of paid sick leave for all federally-regulated workers so that no one

Liberal government to keep Canadians safe, healthy, and supported through the pandemic, including: * Introducing the Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit to give up to four weeks of income support for people who are unable to work because they are sick or self-isolating; * Securing personal protective equipment at the first signs of the pandemic to keep our frontline workers safe; * Procuring an extensive portfolio of vaccines early on, so that every eligible Canadian could be vaccinated by July 2021 – two months ahead of schedule; * Launching the Safe Return to Class Fund within the first months of the pandemic to

Vancouver Police seek witnesses after man’s throat slashed by stranger VANCOUVER Police are investigating after a man’s throat was slashed by a stranger during an unprovoked attack in Mount Pleasant on Sunday afternoon. “This attack appears to have been random, and it caused serious injuries to the victim,” said Sgt. Steve Addison. “We believe there were a number of people in the area when it happened, and we’re asking anyone with information to contact VPD investigators.” The victim, a 46-year-old man from Vancouver, was near Quebec Street and East 10th Avenue around 3 p.m. on Sunday when someone approached from behind and cut his throat, then walked away. Several bystanders came to the victim’s aid, called 9-1-1, and stayed with the victim until first responders arrived. VPD of-

ficers arrested the suspect about a block south of Kingsgate Mall. “We’re grateful to everyone who came to the aid of the victim and called 9-1-1 immediately. They provided comfort to the injured victim and allowed VPD officers to arrest the suspect while he was still in the area,” said Addison. The victim suffered significant cuts to his neck and throat. He was taken to hospital, received stitches, and was released. The injuries are no longer life-threatening. Jesse Attig, a 30-year-old from Vancouver, has been charged with attempted murder and remains in custody. Anyone with information who hasn’t yet spoken to police is asked to call VPD’s Major Crime Section at 604-717-2541.

Jaishankar lashes out at hypocrisy of countries that protect terrorists United Nations (IANS): As events in Afghanistan elevate concerns about international security, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said on Thursday said that the global community should call out the hypocrisy of countries that protect terrorists “with innocents’ blood on their hands”. Speaking at the Security Council on the international threat of terrorism, he drew attention to the roles of Pakistan and China in providing support to terrorist groups without mentioning the two by name. “Unfortunately, there are also some countries who seek to undermine or subvert our collective resolve to fight terrorism. This cannot be allowed to pass. “When we see state hospitality being extended to those with innocents’ blood on their hands, we should never lack the courage to call out their double-speak,” Jaishankar said. “Whether it is in Afghanistan or against India, groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaishe-Mohammed (JeM) continue to operate with both impunity and encouragement,” he said. “It is, therefore, vital that this Council does not take a selective, tactical or complacent view of the problems we face. We must never countenance sanctuaries for terrorists or overlook their raising of resources,” he said. In what is seen as a reference to Beijing’s attempts to protect individuals and groups linked to Pakistan-backed LeT and JeM, he said: “Don’t place blocks and holds on listing requests without any

reason.” Reiterating his action plan against terrorism, he said the Council in tackling terrorists and terrorist groups should “enlist and delist objectively, not on political or religious considerations”. Jaishankar warned that “in our own immediate neighbourhood, ISIL-Khorasan (ISIL-K) has become more energetic and is constantly seeking to expand its footprint. Events unfolding in Afghanistan have naturally enhanced global concerns about their implications for both regional and international security”. He called for early adoption of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism proposed by India. It has been blocked by some countries that try to defend some terrorists as “freedom-fighters”. Jaishankar said, “Summon the political will: don’t justify terrorism, don’t glorify terrorists. No double standards. Terrorists

are terrorists; distinctions are made only at our own peril.” He said that despite the international efforts to tighten legal measures against financing terrorist organisations, they still receive money. “The flow of funds has continued and rewards for killings are now even being paid in Bitcoins!” Expressing his solidarity with all the victims of terrorism, Jaishankar said that while the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attack on the US comes up next month, “the 2008 Mumbai terror attack is imprinted in our memories. The 2016 Pathankot air base attack and the 2019 suicide bombing of our policemen at Pulwama are even more recent”. ALSO, Jaishankar on Thursday announced India will assume a pivotal role in the global fight against terror when it takes over the chair of the Security Council’s Counter-Terrorism Committee

(CTC) next year. He said that India will be taking over the leadership of the CTC from Tunisia and hopes to build on the gains from Thursday’s meeting of the Council on terrorism threats that he presided over. Addressing reporters outside the Security Council chamber after the meeting, he said that he was happy that “a very strong, substantive, clear press statement” was adopted by the Council that addresses the key concerns of India. “All Security Council members with one voice endorsed a zerotolerance approach to terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. We are clear that there cannot be double standards and distinctions cannot be made,” he said. The press statement issued by India’s Permanent Representative T.S. Tirumurti as the Council President for the month expressed “unwavering commitment to strengthening international cooperation to prevent and combat terrorism in all its forms and manifestations”. It reaffirmed “that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security, and that all acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed”. It also called for strong measures to prevent terrorism financing. Getting the unambiguous statement on terrorism approved by the fractured Council was a mark of the diplomatic leadership by India.

Nothing on record to show Tharoor incited Sunanda Pushkar to commit suicide: Court

New Delhi (IANS): A Delhi court, while discharging Congress MP Shashi Tharoor in the case related to death of his wife Sunanda Pushkar, said there is nothing on record to show he had “provoked, incited or induced the deceased to commit suicide”, and that she might have felt distressed or mentally disturbed with his alleged extra-marital relation, “but mental disturbances does not constitute the offence of abetment”. In the 176-page order, special judge Geetanjali Goel said: “There is nothing to demonstrate any overt act on the part of the accused (Tharoor) and only on the ground that he continued the alleged affair with MT (a Pakistani journalist) (even if it is assumed) and exchanged messages with her, it cannot be presumed that he had abetted the commission of suicide by the deceased.” Emphasising criminal trials require evidence, the court said there is no doubt a precious life was lost, but in the absence of specific allegations and sufficient material, it cannot presume Tharoor had committed the offence, and he cannot be compelled to face the rigmarole of a criminal trial. The court added the prosecution has not been able to point out even one instance where the accused had done something purposefully which facilitated the commis-

Shashi Tharoor and Sunanda Pushkar. sion of the offence. “There is no material whatsoever against the accused, much less any positive act to instigate or aid the deceased in committing the suicide, even if it is assumed that the death was a suicide. As such, it is not shown, even prima facie, that the offence under Section 306 IPC is made out against the accused,” said the court. The court observed that Pushkar might have felt distressed or mentally disturbed

with the alleged extra-marital relation of the accused, but mental disturbance does not constitute the offence of abetment. The court further added even it cannot be said that a person subjecting a woman to cruelty is guilty of abetment unless something is brought on record. “Even for instigation, the intention to provoke, incite, urge or encourage doing of an act is an essential factor but the record does not bear out any such intention on the part of the accused,” it said. The prosecution had argued that Tharoor had continued the affair with MT despite his assurance not to continue the same and this showed wilful misrepresentation and instigation by misrepresentation. Junking this contention, the court said: “There is nothing on record to show that the accused did some act in order to irritate or annoy the deceased until she reacted or strongly persuaded or advised the deceased to do some act with the intention to provoke, incite, urge or encourage the latter to commit suicide.” The court on Wednesday had pronounced the order discharging Tharoor. Pushkar was found dead on the evening of January 17, 2014. Initially, Delhi Police investigated it as a murder, with an FIR registered under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), but then it charged Tharoor under Sections 306 (abetment of suicide) and 498A (cruelty by husband). In a statement after he was discharged in the case, Tharoor said: “I would like to express my humble thanks to Judge Geetanjali Goel for her orders today, discharging me from the charges levied by the Delhi Police, which I have consistently described as preposterous. This brings a significant conclusion to the long nightmare which had enveloped me after the tragic passing of my late wife Sunanda. I have weathered dozens of unfounded accusations and media vilification patiently, sustained by my faith in the Indian judiciary, which today stands vindicated. In our justice system, the process is all too often the punishment. Nonetheless, the fact that justice has been done, at last, will allow all of us in the family to mourn Sunanda in peace.”

BACK in 2014, the Toronto Star reported that Pushkar was a Canadian citizen who moved to Toronto in 1999 with her son, but her stay was “a bit of a mystery.” Pushkar is said to have moved to Toronto with her son Shiv (from her second marriage) from Dubai with a banker of Pakistani origin reportedly after financial losses. Her second husband returned to India where he allegedly committed suicide in 1997. Pushkar, who first met Tharoor in 2009 in Dubai when he was still married to Christa Giles, a Canadian diplomat he had met at the UN, married him in 2010. The Toronto Star had reported in 2014 that Jacob Joseph Puthenparambil, a digital media specialist in Singapore who was chief of staff for Tharoor from early 2009 to June 2010, said that after her husband’s death, her son, who was them 5 or 6, stopped talking because of shock. Pushkar learned that she could get care in Canada for Shiv, who was an actor living in Mumbai in 2014. She told Tehelka, a weekly news magazine in New Delhi, in 2010 that she started life in Canada from scratch, doing odd jobs for some time before getting into the IT sector. She said that they tied up with companies like Compaq and headhunted in India for them. Then she started working with a San Francisco company called Valley Resources and made good money, enrolling her son in a private school. She also reportedly worked for Noble House International, a global real estate company. In 2004, a company called Best Homes sent her to Dubai to set up its real estate operations. The Star said that she bought a house for $325,000 in Markham in December 2000, according to property records, and that the house is still in her name. “According to a declaration of assets in January 2013, she listed 12 apartments in Dubai: some rented out, some still under construction. The total value of her assets, including jewelry and cars, was approximately $21 million. The declaration is available on the Indian prime minister’s website, the Star reported.

Govt to prioritise rescue of Indian workers from Afghanistan

New Delhi (IANS): The government has decided to rescue Indian workers on priority and steps are being taken to contact them at the earliest, sources said here on Thursday. These Indian workers have been working at the different projects in Afghanistan and are anxiously waiting to return to India after the Taliban took full control of the country on August 15. Amid reports of clashes between Taliban militia and the Afghan Army in some places like Jalalabad and Khost, it has become challenging for Indian authorities to contact Indian workers and bring them back to Kabul safely, the sources further said. The Indian authorities are also considering treating other government documents like Aadhaar card or voter identity cards for those whose passports were taken away by the local employers who ran away from the cities fearing Taliban, they added. Many Indian workers have complained to the Indian officials that their passports were deposited with their employers and they do not have them to travel back to India. The External Affair Minister Dr S. Jaishankar has already reiterated that bringing back Indians from Afghanistan was the top priority of the Government. In the last meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday asked officials to bring Indians back from Afghanistan at the earliest. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has set up an ‘Afghanistan Cell’ to coordinate repatriation and related matters and they are in constant touch with the representatives of the Afghan Sikh and Hindu communities. With the closure of the Indian Embassy in Kabul, these workers have been facing problems in contacting the Indian authorities; however, the Indian officials have assured them that steps are being taken to resolve this issue at the earliest. The government is in constant touch with the US officials in Kabul for the safe return of these workers and also waiting to reopen the Kabul airport, an official who was privy to these developments said on condition of anonymity. Reacting to the problems being faced by the Indian workers, the West Asia expert and senior journalist Qamar Agha said that the Indian government was fully capable of handling this situation and will evacuate all Indians from Afghani-

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid had said on Tuesday that the insurgent group does not wish to “repeat any conflict, any war”. “We want to do away with the factors for conflict. Therefore, the Islamic Emirate does not have any kind of any kind of hostility or animosity towards anybody,” Mujahid had said in his first press conference since the Taliban overthrew the Afghanistan government. He added that all animosity “has come to an end”.

“We would like to live peacefully. We do not want any internal enemies or external enemies,” he had said, as reported by Geo News. The Taliban would not seek retribution against former soldiers and members of the Western-backed government, the spokesman had said, adding that the movement is granting an amnesty for former Afghan government soldiers as well as contractors and translators who worked for international forces.

Taliban fighters in Kabul this week, stan. “India has a vast experience in evacuating thousands of its citizens from Iraq, Kuwait and other conflict zones in the past. Of late, we have also brought not only our people from Yemen but also foreign nationals who were stuck there safely,” Agha said. “The major problem is that Afghanistan is a landlocked country and Pakistan has blocked their land routes so they will be evacuated by air only and we have military transport aircrafts, Air India planes which were successfully used in emergency evacuation in past and this time too, the Government will successfully rescue all Indians safely”, the official added. MEANWHILE, the Taliban are intensifying their hunt for people who worked for and collaborated with NATO and the US forces, according to a UN document. The confidential paper was produced by the Norwegian Centre for Global Analyses, which provides the UN with intelligence information. “The Taliban are arresting and/or threatening to kill or arrest family members of target individuals unless they surrender themselves to the Taliban,” the BBC reported. It said that those at particular risk are people with positions in the military, police and investigative units. “The Taliban have been conducting advance mapping of individuals prior to take take-over of all major cities,” it said. It added that the militants are screening for individuals while permitting some evacuation of foreign personnel from Kabul airport, but the situation there remained “chaotic”. According to the report, the Taliban are recruiting new informer networks to collaborate with the new regime.

High Court orders ex-Director General of Police Sumedh Singh Saini’s release Chandigarh: Just over 24 hours after he was arrested by the Vigilance Bureau, Punjab’s former Director-General of Police Sumedh Singh Saini was around midnight ordered to be released forthwith by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The Bench ruled his arrest was in violation of earlier orders dated October 11, 2018, September 23, 2020 and anticipatory bail order dated August 12. The Court vide order dated October 11, 2018, had directed the issuance of seven-day advance notice to Saini in case action was contemplated against him The Court, vide order dated September 23, 2020, extended the protection of order dated October 11, 2018, to any incident pertaining to his entire service career. The Bench had also made it clear that the only exception would be the Multani case registered by the Punjab Police on May 6, 2020. The orders by Justice Arun Kumar Tyagi of the High Court came at about 11:40 p.m. after hearing day-long arguments on two petitions — one filed by Saini for extension of protection to him in all cases and another habeas corpus petition filed for his release. The Bench, among other things, was told that Saini was allegedly arrested in violation of the orders passed by the High Court. Saini, produced before a Court in Mohali for remand, remained there with the mag-

Sumedh Singh Saini istrate concerned awaiting High Court orders. Saini was arrested in case registered on September 17, 2020, for cheating, forgery and other offences under Sections 409, 420, 467, 468, 471 and 120- B of the IPC and the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act at Vigilance Bureau police station, Flying Squad-1, Mohali Among other things, Saini stated that he had filed the petition expressing his apprehension of false implication in criminal cases on account of malice, mala fides and ulterior motives attributed to the political party in power in the State of Punjab. tions dated September 23, 2020, directing a week’s advance notice before effecting his arrest, the officials of the respondent-State were making attempts to arrest him by falsely implicating him in false cases. Justice Tyagi directed the State to file copies of the relevant documents, including arrest memo prepared at the time of his arrest, document intimating him about the grounds of arrest, document intimating his family member/friend about his arrest and copy of the FIR. The case was then adjourned to 3 p.m. for resuming hearing. The Punjab Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau had arrested Saini in a fraud case pertaining to the sale of land in 2020. Saini, who is a Z-plus category protectee, reached the vigilance bureau office in Mohali, near here, on Wednesday evening to join the investigation in another case where he was formally arrested in the fraud case. Interestingly, Saini, who was considered a blue-eyed boy of militancy-era police chief K.P.S. Gill and was credited with eliminating militancy in the state, had got an interim anticipatory bail from the Punjab and Haryana High Court in a disproportionate assets case and was asked to join the investigation within a week. A 1982-batch IPS officer, Saini, has been facing multiple cases, including murder, abduction, corruption and human rights

violations. Once he was heading the vigilance bureau too. Officials told IANS that Saini had been kept in a barrack of the vigilance bureau since his arrest and was likely to be produced in a Mohali court on Thursday. Saini, who was removed from the top post by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal in 2015 following incidents of sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib and subsequent violence in the state in which the police force was accused of excesses that left two people dead, has not been sharing cordial relations with current Chief Minister Amarinder Singh. In fact, Saini had challenged the vigilance bureau’s closure report in the multi-crore Ludhiana City Centre scam involving Amarinder Singh. For quite some time, Amarinder Singh had been seeking a probe into the fake gun battles and extra-judicial killings alleged to have taken place during militancy in Punjab. Taking cognizance of the revelations made by a former Punjab Police constable, Gurmeet Singh, alias Pinky, wherein he had alleged in 2015 that a number of people were killed without trial during militancy in Punjab, Amarinder Singh had demanded the dismissal of Saini and registration of a case against him.

Maharaja’s statue vandalism extremist act: British Sikh MP Chandigarh (IANS): Saddened after Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s statue was vandalised in Lahore, Pakistan, British Labour MP Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi on Wednesday said the court of the Sikh ruler was run by the Muslims, Hindus, Christians and Sikhs. “Saddened by this from extremists in Pakistan (western) Punjab, specially as Maharaja Ranjit Singh was no foreign invader, but fellow Punjabi whose court was run by Muslims, Hindus, Christians and Sikhs, and who donated to building their shrines,” Dhesi tweeted. “Hope authorities swiftly repair it,” the Sikh MP from Slough added. A day earlier, India expressed concern at

the vandalization of the statue, saying incidents of violence against Pakistan’s minorities are increasing at an “alarming rate”. Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri described Maharaja Ranjit Singh ‘the great unifier of India’, saying the incident must be strongly condemned. “This act which attempts to erase the shared history of the subcontinent shows how extremist ideologies feel emboldened in our volatile neighbourhood,” Puri tweeted. This was the third attempt of vandalising the statue since its unveiling in 2019 at the Lahore Fort on Ranjit Singh’s 180th death anniversary.

CRIME OF THE WEEK IHIT INVESTIGATING STABBING DEATH IN WHISTLER Unsolved Crime: Homicide; Date: August 14, 2021; Location: Whistler; Details: File # 2021-988 On August 14, 2021, at around 2:09 a.m., the Sea-to-Sky RCMP responded to the Whistler Medical Clinic after a male had attended suffering from a stabbing. Police arrived and learned the victim had died as a result of his injuries. Investigators were able to identify the victim as Henry Stanley Garcia Molina. Through the assistance of witnesses, investigators have determined that Mr. Garcia Molina was attacked between 1:45 a.m. and 2 a.m. on August 14, 2021, directly in front of the Bearfoot Bistro entrance located at 4121 Village Green in the Whistler Village. Following a canvass of the area, investigators identified several persons of interest and believe there are multiple individuals involved in the murder as well as several witnesses that have yet to speak with police. Mr. Garcia Molina's family is appealing for the public's help for information and has prepared the following statement: “Henry's life was taken senselessly in an act of violence while in Whistler Village simply trying to grab a taxi back to his hotel. Henry's life did not deserve to be taken away so brutally. His loss has been the most painful thing that any parent has had to go through. Henry left a positive impact on everyone he has ever met, including all his family members, his friends from school and various sports teams he was a part of. Henry was very involved with the community and admired by many. He was a kindhearted young man who was always willing to help others.”

There is a range of trims , while the Mustang GT with the HighPerformance Handling setup is the most potent Mustang. The package adds MagneRide dampers, higher-performance 265/40R Pirelli P Zero summer tires, stiffer sway bars and a Torsen 3.35:1 limited-slip rear end. We tested the 2021 GT Convertible version, highlighted GT ‘5.0’ badging on the front wings and the round Mustang badge with ‘GT’ logo instead of the Mustang pony. The rear fascia offers, quad GT dual exhaust tips and a diffuser, Wheels come in 18- 20 -inch sizes.

Review by Veeno Dewan The venerable Mustang has been around for 55 years now and according to Ford is the world’s best-selling sports coupe. With millions sold, the balance between beauty and aggression is superb in this sixth-generation model with its classic long-hood, short deck proportions and menacing visage, accentuated by its hood vents. Its crouching stance and clean sharp lines are wonderfully rendered in either fastback or convertible models. For 2021 this automotive icon gains more options and new smart technology. Its quick too with a range of powerplants; from a 2L fourcylinder EcoBoost engine to V6 Power and the monstrous 5.0L V8-powered GT with 460 Horsepower. Indo-Canadian Voice Main | Saturday, Aug. 21, 2021 My V8 premium convertible tester was finished in a sublime Oxford white with a power operated black fabric roof and Ebony leather-trimmed interior. Interior-wise, the Mustang has a tasteful mix of materials, not super luxurious but decent enough. Ergonomics are fine with a neat dash with a 12inch digital instrument cluster. Options included the: premier trim, Ford safe & smart package, adaptive cruise control, voice-activated touchscreen nav system, the 10-speed auto transmission, 3.55 ratio limited slip axle, active valve performance exhaust, 20- inch premium-painted alum wheels, Bang and Olufsen 12 speaker premium audio and much more. The GT also featured leather / suede seating, the driver’s seat features six-way electrical adjustment and the passenger’s seat are four-way adjustable. The front cabin is roomy enough, while the rear seats comprise two individual buckets – not so roomy, better for small kids. The trunk volume of 13.5 cubic feet is ample, and with the rear 50/50

seats flipped down increase cargo space impressively. On the road, the Windsor, Ontario-built 5.0-litre V8 engine produces 460 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque, the transmission is a tenspeed SelectShift automatic transmission option. while true enthusiasts will appreciate that a six-speed manual is the standard transmission. The 460-hp/420-lb-ft Coyote V8 revs all the way to 7,500 rpm and has a superb sounding audio soundtrack from the tuned growling, burbling exhaust. With the ten-speed automatic transmission, this 5.0-liter Mustang GT is fast – delivering a 0- 96kph dash in a scant 4.3 seconds. The Coyote V8 has a 7,500-rpm redline The Mustang GT offers good driving dynamics, with balanced ride and decent enough handling, In the GT Premium, you can fine-tune your driving experience with the five selectable driving modes: Normal, Sport+, Track, Drag Strip, or Snow/Wet. However, you parse it, even a short trip to the store takes on new meaning as the 5.0L V8 barks up on start and settles into a menacing growl. One gains a visceral pleasure when you stab the throttle and

get rewarded by an eager rush of power. Behave yourself and drive moderately and the V8 thumps away at 2,000 rpm all day long barely breaking a sweat. With the power top down its an exhilarating experience! You might sweat however when you fill up with gas! But if only a V8 will do for

day, namely: The Mustang, Dodge Challenger, and the Chevrolet Camaro. The Mustang has personality, image, and a pedigree that’s impeccable. You can go from mild to wild with various engines and trims. The GT is the one to get of you can handle the V8’s fuel economy. Affordable

you, fuel economy numbers may not be an issue. The Mustang V8 5.0L has a fuel economy figure of: (Regular 87) 16.2 / 10.0 / 13.4 L / 100 km city / highway / combined. To sum up, yes there are other Sports coupes out there that are more refined , but the Mustang is part of the holy trinity of classic American muscle cars that endure to this

in it base and mid - trim levels the Mustang GT is incredible value for money if you look at the power and performance. An American icon and deservedly so. Highly recommended. 2021 Ford Mustang GT V8 Convertible Base price: $54,490. Price as tested $64,540 with options. WEBSITE: www.ford.ca

A d istinctive, powerful Premium SUV

Auto review by Veeno Dewan The 2021 QX80 invokes Infiniti’s “Powerful Elegance” design language in a bold new direction, creating a powerful, contemporary and commanding aesthetic.” Well, that’s the tag line, the 2021 QX80 is a full size, V8 powered luxury SUV that has available seating for seven, 3,800 kg of towing capacity, and every conceivable luxury you can imagine. It’s a looker too, with its huge, handsome square jawed, commanding presence. For 2021, there are no significant changes. The QX80 is available as a seven-passenger model in Luxe and ProActive trims, or as an eight-passenger in ProActive trim. All models are offered exclusively with four-wheel drive — All-Mode 4WD with a computer-controlled transfer case and three settings (Auto, 4H and 4L). The SUV is powered by a 400-hp 5.6L V8 and has a maximum towing capacity of 8,500

pounds. Available Hydraulic Body Motion Control limits excess body roll under more severe cornering. As standard on the QX80 is advanced 5.6-litre DOHC V8 engine, with VVEL (Variable Valve Event and Lift) technology, the V8 engine produces 400 hp (298 kW) and 413 lb ft of torque. A seven-speed automatic

transmission is fitted as standard to every model. We tested a fully loaded 2021 sevenpassenger QX80 with the Technology package, 22-inch wheels, hydraulic body motion control system, lane departure warning system, blind spot monitoring, forward collision monitoring, intelligent cruise control, distance control assist, back up collision intervention, adaptive lighting, advanced climate control, front and rear sonar sensors, active trace control and much more. A wonderful, very eye- catching metallic paint finished off our test model. The inside of the QX80 is sumptuous and welcoming. The leather upholstery features a very upscale quilting on the seating surfaces. Other luxury touches include new stitching throughout the cabin and shiny high-gloss dark wood trim around the steering wheel, dash and door panels, centre stack and lower console, it’s quite well done, I think and sets off the metal accents trim very well. The dash features an 8 inch and 7-inch display

for infotainment needs and a premium Bose 17 speaker sound system. Our cabin was upholstered in black leather seat trim, but I have seen the tan/brown versions of the QX80 interior that look amazing. High-quality materials abound and everything looks very well fitted together. The front seats are wonderfully plush, and we just love the big armrest and sheer amount of space to stretch out. The rear seats are also supremely comfortable. There are dual rear headrest DVD displays that come with the Theater package and the availability of larger 8.0-inch screens with high-resolution capability. So, no worries about keeping passengers entertained on long road trips! Accessing the third row is uncomplicated thanks to the ingenious second-row seats that tumble forward via either a button in the center stack or a lever pull on the seat. The third row offers decent enough space for a pair of adults on short journeys or for a couple of teens or kids on longer trips. Note that safety is high, and our tester came with active safety features such as: forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning and intervention, lane departure warning and lane keeping, adaptive cruise control with a full speed range, reverse auto braking, and Distance Control Assist that maintains a safe distance from the car in front. On the road, the QX80’s old school 5.6-liter V-8 engine has lots of grunt, al-

2021 Infiniti QX80

though extra sound deadening means there is more of a polite woof than a snarling growl when you give it some gas. It’s a docile, smooth, power- plant teamed with the seven-speed automatic transmission with Adaptive Shift Control, and manual shift mode with Downshift Rev Matching. The class-exclusive hydraulic body-motion-control system, aids in the handling department by automatically adjusting the suspension to significantly mitigate body roll in corners. It is much needed as the top heavy QX80 feels more stable and controlled in turns. The steering is amazingly light for such a large vehicle and parking the QX80 is not a daunting task thanks to the as standard 360-degree camera system with multi camera views capability and other aids. Of course, the V8 powered QX80 will punch your wallet at the gas station with fuel economy not great at 17.3 L/100km city, and 12.3 highway and 15.1 l/100km combined. Still not much to gripe about, a bit of a dated infotainment system, but it still works. I have a bit of a soft spot for the QX80, it’s luxurious, super roomy, and just feels great to drive. The ultimate family cruiser. Highly recommended. 2021 Infiniti QX80 MRSP from MSRP $79,998 to $87,998 Total price as tested $90,093 Including freight and PDE More info at infiniti.ca

Provincial Housing Market Activity Normalizing into 2022

BCREA 2021 Third Quarter Housing Forecast Update Vancouver, BC – August 17, 2021 The British Columbia Real Estate Association (BCREA) released its 2021 Third Quarter Housing Forecast Update today. Multiple Listing Service® (MLS®) residential sales in the province are forecast to rise 26 per cent to 118,350 units this year, after recording 94,007 sales in 2020. In 2022, MLS®residential sales are forecast to pull back 15 per cent to 100,150 units. “The pace of home sales in the province has slowed in recent months but an unprecedented start to the year still has BC on track for a record-breaking year,” said Brendon Ogmundson, BCREA Chief Economist. With strong demand being supported by low mortgage rates and a rapidly rebounding post-COVID economy,

the more significant concern is whether there will be an adequate supply of listings in the market. The supply situation is especially severe in markets outside the Lower Mainland, where new listings activity has been lackluster. As a result, the average price in 2021 is

Manufacturers Of Quality Cabinetry

on track to post a second consecutive year of doubledigit gains. We are forecasting the provincial average price to rise 16.6 per cent to $911,300 this year, followed by a 2.9 per cent gain next year to $937,300.

COMMON SENSE HEALTH – W. GIFFORD-JONES, MD AND DIANA GIFFORD-JONES

What would make your skin turn yellow?

A report from the Massachusetts General Hospital and published in the New England Journal of Medicine tells an interesting story. A 62-year-old man over a two-month period developed numbness, a “pins and needles” sensation in his hands, shortness of breath, trouble walking due to severe joint pain, and he began to turn yellow. Anyone faced with all these problems would think the end is near and start planning to say goodbye to loved ones. In retrospect, his symptoms could have been even worse. He could also have faced paranoia, delusions, memory loss, incontinence, loss of taste and more. But this man had a pinch of good luck. Tests revealed he had a deficiency of vitamin B-12. He wasn’t going to die. But how did he develop such acute deficiency, and how can you be sure you’re getting enough of this vitamin? B-12 is an important vitamin. The adult human body needs 2.5 micrograms daily so red blood cells can carry oxygenated blood to the brain, nerves and DNA. Since B-12 cannot be made by the body, it must be obtained from diet or supplements. What causes a lack of vitamin B-12? Some people simply don’t get enough in their diet. Others, even if they consume sufficient B-12, fail to absorb it. This is why deficiency is especially common among the elderly. One person in five over age 60 and two in five over 80, fail to absorb B-12 from food and they require a supplement. Another reason can be autoimmune disorders that make it difficult to absorb B-12. As we age, the lining of the stomach gets thinner which decreases the production of hydrochloric acid. Vitamin B-12 is firmly attached to a protein. To pry it loose so it can be absorbed it needs sufficient amounts of hydrochloric acid. It’s also possible to be low in B-12 if you’re taking medication, such as, Prevacid, Losec, and Nexium, used to treat acid reflux or a stomach ulcer. Even less powerful drugs, like Pepcid, Tagamet, or Zantac, reduce the production of hydrochloric acid. Intestinal problems such as celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, and excessive alcohol consumption reduce B-12. And with more people using gastric bypass surgery to lose weight, B-12 intake can become be affected. You can be young and develop a lack of B-12. Plants do not make B-12. So among the growing numbers of young people striving for a strict vegetarian or vegan diet, there is a high risk of B-12 deficiency. Fortified grains can be a source of B-12. Blood work will show if additional B-12 supplementation is needed. There are many reports lauding the use of B-12 to prevent heart disease, infertility, fatigue, eczema, and a long list of other chronic health problems. But according to Harvard researchers, these reports are all based on faulty evidence. Alzheimer’s disease is a good example. A deficiency of B-12 can lead to symptoms of Alzheimer’s. But even high doses of 1000 micrograms have had no effect on this disease. One case of supposed Alzheimer’s disease was cured by B-12 supplementation, but it proved to be the wrong diagnosis. For this patient, memory deficiency problems were quickly cured by B-12. As not-

ed earlier, it’s good to be lucky. Good sources of dietary B-12 intake include steak, fish, poultry products, and eggs. Are you wondering why the patient had yellow skin? Red blood cells become fragile with decreased amounts of B-12. Then they release bilirubin, produced by the liver, into circulation resulting in jaundice. If your skin is getting yellow, see your doctor for blood work. Visit www.docgiff.com. For comments, contact-us@docgiff.com. Follow us on Instagram @docgiff and @diana_gifford_ jones
