We are committed to build ing new community centres with pools and new road infrastructure that will allow for quicker and saf er commutes in our city.”

6. Building on Surrey’s achieve ments in environmental sustain

* Debra Antifaev: “Doug McCal lum and Safe Surrey Coalition have shown they are the party that acts and delivers, they are the party that gets it done. I am excited to put my name forward with Safe Surrey Co alition because I have door knocked and volunteered for so many poli ticians over the years and I have heard from folks that politicians talk but never deliver. It is to my surprise that Doug McCallum actually has delivered on every single campaign promise in record time, which I have never seen from a politician before.

For most politicians, promises like this would seem insincere and un realistic, but the SSC says McCallum has proven to the City of Surrey that he is not your average politician.

1. Fast-tracking approvals for Sky Train extension down King George Boulevard to Newton

* Laurie Guerra: “Unlike typical politicians who make promises to voters and don’t deliver once into office, Safe Surrey Coalition is a co alition that makes a promise and delivers. Our track on delivering SkyTrain and a local police force in record time is proof of our commit ment to Surrey Residents that want to see results.”

and the Safe Surrey Co alition made it clear that this is what the residents want and what the City of Surrey needs.

Along with the extension of the Sky Train to Newton, the party is dou bling down on their climate action, announcing that the current policy to achieve net zero by 2050 will be expedited to 2030.

* John Gibeau: “I am proud to run as a councillor for the Safe Surrey Coalition. Promises that were made during the 2018 campaign, which include extending SkyTrain to Lang ley and the transition of the police force, were achieved. As a person of action, I admire that, and will do my part to move Surrey forward into the largest and most progressive city in British Columbia.”

* Mandeep Nagra: “Safe Surrey Coalition has strong record of sup porting small businesses and cre ating jobs for Surrey residents. We recently approved the Campbell Heights plan that will create 20,000 stable jobs and generate $20M in annual tax revenue that will help fund new roads and community centres with new ice sheets”

With a simple yet bold platform, McCallum and the SSC candidates say they look forward to executing, once again on this election’s prom ises, which include:

trust amongst city leaders. His reli able consistency and exhaustive list of major achievements have led to this year’s campaign slogan: DOUG GETS IT DONE.

The Safe Surrey Coalition says its platform includes many exciting projects, such as:

“I am passionate about housing –for everyone. Supported housing for the disabled, reasonable rental housing, and affordable housing for the middle class. I have no doubts that, with Safe Surrey Coalition, I can fulfill my passion and get it done for the people of Surrey. I’ve attended conventions, written, and presented resolutions, and lobbied the govern ment for people with disabilities – I think it’s time I actually join the deci sion makers.”

IN the 2018 election, Surrey resi dents asked McCallum to build infrastructure that had previously been neglected for up to 30 years, such as extending the SkyTrain all the way to Langley and replacing the Bailey Bridge on King George Highway. He delivered on all those promises and more, notes the SSC.

On October 15, McCallum is seek ing another four-year term.

The Toyota Tacoma is Canada’s best-selling model in the midsize truck segment. And it is not hard to see why, the”Tac” has always offered an excellent combina tion of good looks, performance, reliability, and good resale. The 20222 Tacoma is still available as an Access Cab, Double Cab or four -door crew cab. There is no more four-cylinder option, just V6-power and four-wheel-drive. No more two-wheel drive either. The Crew Cabs seat five in excel lent comfort. For the 2022 model year, he Trail Edition, TRD Pro and TRD Sport Premium all sit a halfinch taller in the back and 1.11.5 inches taller up front. Other changes include the Special Edi tion Trail’s rear differential lock, increased track width, skid plate, and bronze wheels. The TRD Pro also has an increased track, plus machine-forged upper control arms, embossed TRD Pro bedside stamping, new black wheels, and available Electric Lime Metallic paint.Across the range, the Tacoma is powered by a 3.5L V6 that makes 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque. All models are four-wheel-drive, with a choice of six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmis sion. Some models include MultiTerrain Select and Crawl Control for off-road driving. Pricing for the Tacoma starts at $38,350- for the Access Cab short bed, at five feet, while other models offer lon ger 6-foot beds such as the Dou ble Cab Crew starting at MSRP $40,350 - $53,390. Admittedly, there won’t be a rush on organic cranberries because of this article. But there is new research showing that cranberries im prove brain function while also lowering cho lesterol. A study published in Frontiers in Nutri tion reports that people ages 50 to 80 who ate the equiva lent of a cup of fresh cranberries a day for 12 weeks saw significant improvement in their memory of everyday events.

So here again is another instance where con sumer behaviours need to exert influence. This is easier to say and harder to do, especially in the context of inflation. But in the grocery store, picking up the higher priced organic, fresh cranberries is the right move.

The Cleveland Clinic offers an impressive list of health benefits associated with cranberries. The most known of these is the role of cranber ries in the prevention of urinary tract infections. But did you know cranberries can also help prevent dental cavities? The same plant com pounds that prevent harmful bacteria from de veloping in the urinary tract may be working on bacteria in the mouth.

Cranberry associations have been working hard to find innovative new practices. But there are still loopholes in legislation and challenges with monitoring industry practices.

Inevitably, needs.there has been a long and slow learning curve associated with the use of so much water. The management of fertilizers and pesticides has been a significant concern. Consumer reports and nutrition gurus have been advising consumers to buy organic cran berries for years.

It’s a cruel irony that so healthy a berry has en dured the unhealthy violations brought on by industry’s unthinking push for production and humankind’s fixation with sugar.

The association of cranberries with lower can cer risk follows the same logic. High fiber di ets and non-starchy fruits and vegetables (like cranberries, beans, and artichokes) improve the performance of the gut in promoting good

CRANBERRIES are a superfood. They are known to fight urinary tract infections. They have anti-inflammatory properties. Cranberries promote heart health. Researchers are even exploring a potential role in reducing cancer risk. But a myopic view that sees only the nu tritional value of cranberries misses the larger not-so-pretty picture.

Cranberries are high in antioxidants that help reduce inflammation. Research shows, how ever, that these benefits come from low-calorie cranberry juices or cranberry supplements, not high-sugar cranberry drinks, sugar-added dried cranberries, or sweet holiday sauces.

ments are an option. Natural health food stores carry a wide variety of cranberry products. The strict regulations, testing standards and verifi cation requirements for certified supplements ensure that any pesticide residues are not in the final product.

The seedy story beneath healthy cranberries

Cranberries have been a staple of Thanksgiv ing celebrations for centuries. Harvard Univer sity served them at commencement dinner as early as 1703. A recipe for cranberry sauce ap peared in a 1796 cookbook. General Ulysses S. Grant ordered his Union Army be served cran berries with the holiday meal in 1864.

Until more recent times, cranberries were typi cally found growing naturally in bogs or marsh es long ago formed by retreating glaciers. Pock ets of clay filled in with water and over time became lined with rich peat and sand. Today, most cranberry producers utilize industrial methods to meet vastly expanded markets. Flooding bogs to facilitate the harvest is now the norm for about 95% of all cranberries. This requires an extraordinary amount of water –each acre of cranberries uses seven to ten feet of water to meet all production, harvesting and flooding
