CBC’S Brady Strachan has produced an amazing report — “Mountie’s anti-Trudeau website raises concerns about discriminatory views within the RCMP” — exposing the worthlessness of the top RCMP brass in BC when it comes to taking swift action against fellow Mounties to protect our democracy and rights and keep their fascist behaviour in check.

“Police officer’s satirical website pokes fun at prime minister, LGBTQ+ issues and immigration policy,” reads the sub-heading.

This report vividly shows why the RCMP in B.C. – and especially in Surrey – need to be replaced.

These guys as a group will never shed their biases and they will never learn how to behave themselves in a multicultural, diverse society. They are misfits, though there are some great individuals in the force; however, they are hopelessly trapped in an outmoded, crumbling organization.

How can minorities — especially South Asians — trust these guys?

Remember, in Surrey, the RCMP supporters made fun of a proposed municipal police force as ‘New Delhi Police’, implying that South Asians are corrupt? There will never be peace and security in Surrey with the RCMP!

STRACHAN found that “The Church of Trudeau” website was online last

November and early December and that the man in photos and videos on the website was an RCMP officer from Trail, B.C.

“Some of the website’s contents and related social media accounts, including Twitter, Twitch, YouTube and Facebook are still publicly available through the Internet Archive Wayback Machine and search engines’ web cache,” Strachan reported.

In one of the videos, the Mountie sarcastically praises “Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and government funding announcements for a Saskatchewan First Nation community and the LGBTQ+ community.”

And in another video, he mocks the federal immigration policy and claims the goal of the policy is to bring in 1.5 million Liberal voters to Canada.

Strahan reported that Trail Mayor Colleen Jones claimed that she has had numerous discussions with the

Trail RCMP detachment commander about it. She added: “I want everybody to know that we are taking it seriously and that the officer in question is currently working from home and will continue to do so until the investigation is complete.”

This kind of approach shows the problem of disciplining Mounties who are answerable only to Ottawa – NOT to Victoria!

Why weren’t the Mounties aware of this disgraceful conduct all this time? Why did they take so long to start taking some kind of action about it?

Wow, they had SEVEN Mounties chasing after then-Surrey mayor Doug McCallum’s “nuisance” charge that the court ultimately threw out in contempt for their ludicrous investigation!

The Mounties’ top brass in B.C. and Surrey should be replaced immediately!

playing politics with public safety”

THE Safe Surrey Coalition (SSC) last week slammed Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke for using scare tactics to try and reverse the ongoing police transitioning and urged her to stop playing politics with public safety.

(The statement came after our last week’s news deadline for the print newspaper and was first posted on our website voiceonline. com. Statements by Surrey Police Service Chief Constable Norm Lipinski and Surrey Councillor Linda Annis slamming Locke for her misleading and scare tactics were published in last week’s VOICE .)

The SSC said in a statement: “The Safe Surrey Coalition is deeply concerned by Mayor Locke’s recent proposal to implement a 55% tax increase for one year to supposedly fund the Surrey Police Service. This tax hike is unnecessary and is a fabricated number that is nothing more than a scare tactic used by Mayor Locke to intimidate Surrey taxpayers and interfere with decision-making at the Provincial level.”

The SSC pointed out: “During the election, Mayor Locke falsely claimed that the transition to the Surrey Police Service would cost Surrey taxpayers $520 million over four years, which we now

know is false. It is also unclear why Mayor Locke wants to force Surrey residents to pay for costs that will be incurred over a fiveyear period in just one year. This is a clear example of Mayor Locke’s bully tactics and her personal vendetta at the expense of Surrey taxpayers.”

The SSC added: “We urge Mayor Locke to consider more responsible and transparent financial strategies that prioritize the needs and well-being of the community, and to stop playing politics with public safety. Hiking taxes by 55% for one year is not good stewardship and we strongly oppose this proposal.”

Giving Hearts Gala brings Langley’s South Asian community together: Renewing the spiritual space at Langley Memorial Hospital

ON February 11, guests of the Giving Hearts Gala will gather at Langley’s Coast Hotel and Convention Centre to celebrate philanthropy within the South Asian community while they raise funds to renew the Spiritual Space at Langley Memorial Hospital (LMH) — a place where patients, their loved ones and health care workers can find solace in times of crisis.

When a loved one is sick, injured, in surgery or long-term care, family members, friends and caregivers carry a burden of helplessness, loss of control, fear and anxiety. At these times, it’s crucial for one’s mental health to find a quiet haven apart from the hospital’s more clinical setting.

LMH’s Spiritual Space on the hospital’s main level has served visitors and patients well for some 50 years. But it’s worn, out-of-date and showing its age. With a full renovation the space will offer respite in a contemporary, serene environment designed for privacy and healing of the heart, mind and spirit.

“The fundraising goal at this year’s gala is both solemn and celebratory,” says Heather Scott, Executive Director of the Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation. “When our family members or friends are in hospital, the worry and uncertainty can become overwhelming. But a renewed Spiritual Space can give us a sanctuary to collect our thoughts, meditate, pray, or merely sit in silence to find the grounding we need.

“At the Foundation, we’re committed to serving LMH patients in a holistic way. With our community partners we fundraise for tangible causes, like capital and equipment projects, but we also place a high value on the mental and spiritual health of LMH patients and their loved ones.

Our Giving Hearts Gala community knows how important it is to find strength in a place that inspires spirituality and peace.”

While the Giving Hearts Gala celebrates longtime South Asian community members and their commitment to supporting LMH’s current needs,

it’s also a recognition that philanthropy continues to grow when the next generation of families, professionals, individuals and businesspeople are motivated today, to build a thriving, generous community that will flourish in years to come.

“We are proud of the young South Asian businesses and professionals who are getting involved with the Giving Hearts Gala,” says Balraj Mann, gala co-chair with Manjit Gill.

Balraj Mann, a longtime business owner, and Manjit Gill, an award-winning philanthropist and community activist, have led the Giving Hearts Gala committee since they founded the gala more than four years ago.

The event will be launched at 6 p.m. by MC jour-

nalist Sonia West, a member of the Giving Hearts Gala committee. Up to 350 gala guests will enjoy a South Asian fusion dinner and an evening of entertainment, including an online raffle, live and silent auctions, performances from the Royal Academy of Punjab’s Bhangra Dance team, an energetic round of Dhol (Indian drumming), and the soothing sounds of master sitarist Anju Bedi. This year, the gala welcomes guest speaker retired Cpl. Baltej Singh Dhillon, the first Sikh to wear a turban as a part of the official RCMP uniform, after he successfully challenged the official dress code on religious grounds. Thanks to his efforts, all Sikh members of the RCMP take pride in wearing their turban while on duty.

Now a motivational speaker and a Board Director at Coast Mental Health, Dhillon will share how the values and lessons embedded in the heart of Sikhism can help energize and empower the community to participate in community health care giving and philanthropy on a wider scale.

Since 2019, Giving Hearts Gala guests have raised $565,000 for advances that make an impact on the lives of Langley residents every day, including $200,000 to help fund the Martini Family Emergency Centre and MRI Suite; $150,000 for wheelchairs and walkers to aid patient mobility and another $215,000 to fund lifesaving care for vulnerable newborns through a new Giraffe Carestation for Langley’s Maternity unit.

Tickets are on sale now – 70 per cent have already sold.

Visit www.lmhfoundation.com/givinghearts for more details.

Tables of eight for $2,000 and individual tickets for $250 each are available before January 22; after January 22, they’re available for $2,200 and $275 respectively at www.lmhfoundation.com/ givinghearts.

RANJ Pillai will be sworn in as Yukon’s tenth premier this weekend.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday said in a statement: “On behalf of the Government of Canada, I congratulate Ranj Pillai on being selected as leader of the Yukon Liberal Party and the Yukon’s next Premier.”

Pillai was first elected to the Yukon Legislative Assembly in 2016 and was appointed as Deputy Premier, Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources, Minister of Economic Development, and Minister responsible for the Yukon Development Corporation and the Yukon Energy Corporation.

Pillai, who is of South Asian origin, previously sat as a Whitehorse City Councillor from 2009 to 2012. During his tenure, he spearheaded the first anti-racism and discrimination bylaw North of 60.

Pillai and his wife, Delilah, have two sons.

Last October, Pillai wrote on his Instagram page: “I was proud to rise in the House today to pay tribute to

Diwali. The Festival of Lights is about spreading the message of friendship and togetherness, a festival of hope, success, knowledge and fortune and I believe this is a message we can all

share. As today marks the final day of this year’s festivities, I want to wish a happy Diwali to all those who celebrate.”

Indeed, Pillai wants to forge closer ties with India. Last December, he met with the new Indian High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma and tweeted: “India is currently one of the largest sources of immigration to the Yukon, representing the second largest number of applicants to the Yukon Nominee Program and a significant proportion of the International student population at Yukon University.”

He noted: “There are many opportunities for the Yukon and India to work together including post-secondary connections to the hospitality industry; labour force recruitment for the tourism and health care industries; critical mineral development and the startup and technology sector.”

ON January 7, Taren Singh Lal was driving home to his family after work, when, due to poor weather conditions, he reportedly lost control of his vehicle near Fraser Highway and 228 Street in Langley and, unfortunately, passed away on the impact of his vehicle, according to information on a GoFundMe Page set up for him.

“Taren was a loving son, older brother, friend, and role model to those around him. He was taken from his family and loved ones too young at the age of 17. Not only was

he a positive and joyful presence in the community, he was also a caring friend and family member. Taren was involved in the community through sports including wrestling, kabaddi, and weightlifting with hopes to join the police force in the future,” states the GoFundMe Page. Lal was a Tamanawis Secondary School student and Tamanawis Wrestling posted the following on their Facebook Page: “We are devastated by the loss of Taren Lal, a beloved member of the Tamanawis Secondary community.

Taren was an extraordinary young man who always put others before himself, and he will be deeply missed. Taren had a great love for sports, particularly wrestling and kabaddi, and was always eager to compete and give his best effort. He was a role model for his peers with his positive attitude and good character, and he left a lasting impact on all those who knew him. Taren’s passing is a tragic loss, and our thoughts and condolences go out to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

Colombo (IANS): Criticising Canada’s move to impose sanction on two former Presidents, Mahinda and Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Sri Lanka on Wednesday demanded reviewing the decision, claiming it was a politically motivated decision.

“This unilateral action by the Canadian government, motivated by domestic political compulsions in Canada, sets a dangerous precedent and is inimical to Sri Lanka’s interests,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Meanwhile Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Ali Sabry summoned Canadian Acting High Commissioner in Colombo, Daniel Bood, on Wednesday and expressed concern over the decision to issue sanctions on four Sri Lankans including the two former presidents.

“Foreign Minister expressed the deep regret of the Government on the announcement of unilateral sanctions brought by the Government of Canada against four individuals including two former Presidents of Sri Lanka based on unsubstantiated allegations. Foreign Minister Sabry emphasised that such unilateral action by the Canadian Government, motivated by domestic political compulsions in Canada, sets a dangerous precedent and is inimical to Sri Lanka’s interests, especially when national unity and reconciliation are of paramount importance,” the Foreign Ministry said.

“The announcement by Canada is detrimental to the government’s ongoing efforts towards national unity, reconciliation, and stability. In consideration of the long-standing bilateral and development partnership between Canada and Sri Lanka, Foreign Minister Sabry urged the Acting High Commissioner to review the decision and engage constructively with Sri Lanka.”

The Canada government imposed sanctions on four Sri Lankans, including former presidents Gotabaya and Mahinda Rajapaksa, for committing “gross and systematic violations of human rights” during the country’s 26-year-long civil war against the Tamil minority.

According to the sanctions, any assets belonging to them would be frozen and they

would not be allowed to enter the Canada. Sanctions were also imposed on Staff Sergeant Sunil Ratnayake who was sentenced to death by court for the brutal murder of eight Tamil civilians at Mirusuvil in Jaffna in 2000 but freed with a controversial presidential pardon from then President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Lt Commander Chandana Prasad Hettiarachchi was arrested for the murder of 11 young men who were kidnapped in capital Colombo and held captive in a Sri Lanka Navy base in Trincomalee.

The VOICE adds: ON Tuesday, Canada announced that it was imposing sanctions against the former Sri Lankan presidents Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Mahinda Rajapaksa, Staff Sergeant Sunil Ratnayake and Lieutenant Commander Chandana Prasad Hettiarachchi “who committed gross and systematic violations of human rights during Sri Lanka’s civil conflict, which occurred from 1983 to 2009.”

The Special Economic Measures (Sri Lanka) Regulations impose on listed persons a prohibition on any transaction (effectively,

an asset freeze) by prohibiting persons in Canada and Canadians outside Canada from engaging in any activity related to any property of these listed persons or providing financial or related services to them. The individuals listed in the Schedule to the Regulations are also rendered inadmissible to Canada under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, said: “Over the past four decades, the people of Sri Lanka have suffered a great deal due to the armed conflict, economic and political instability, and gross violations of human rights. Canada is steadfast in its support to attain peace, reconciliation, justice and accountability on the island. Canada has taken decisive action today to end international impunity against violators of international law. Canada stands ready to support Sri Lanka’s path to peace, inclusion and prosperity through the advancement of accountability, reconciliation and human rights, including international assistance to address the domestic crisis.”

The government said that despite continued calls from Canada and the international community to address accountability, the

Government of Sri Lanka has taken limited meaningful and concrete action to uphold its human rights obligations. This jeopardizes progress on justice for affected populations, and prospects for peace and reconciliation. Victims and survivors of gross human rights violations deserve justice.

That is why Canada continues to call on Sri Lanka to fulfill its commitment to establish a meaningful accountability process.

The government said that these sanctions send a clear message that Canada will not accept continued impunity for those that have committed gross human rights violations in Sri Lanka.

Canada will continue to collaborate alongside international partners, including through relevant multilateral bodies to advocate for human rights and accountability in Sri Lanka, which is an important step toward securing a safe, peaceful and inclusive future for the country. Canada, as part of the Core Group on Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council will continue to advocate for the full implementation of resolution 51/1 and support efforts towards attaining accountability and peace on the island.

Canada supports efforts towards urgent political and economic reforms to alleviate the hardships faced by the people in Sri Lanka and strongly encourages the Sri Lankan government to promote democracy, human rights and maintain the rule of law as it works to address this crisis.

In addition to today’s announcement, and in response to the humanitarian crisis in Sri Lanka, Canada announced $3 million to the appeals launched by the United Nations and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to address immediate needs, including food security and livelihoods, shelter and non-food items, as well as nutritional assistance and primary healthcare services for vulnerable children and women. Canada has also readjusted ongoing international assistance projects to address pressing needs, providing support, for instance, to the World Health Organization for the procurement of essential medical equipment and supplies.

JANUARY 9 marked the 17th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (Non-Resident Indian Day) and it was observed on the same day by the Chetna Association of Canada in Vancouver.

The chief guest was Indian Consul general Manish, while the guest of honour was Amarjeet Kaypee, former renowned cricketer who scored 7,623 runs for the Ranji Trophy in India. Kaypee is on a personal visit in Canada and is being welcomed by the diaspora and lovers of cricket, including Anil Khanna of BC Cricket Club.

Both Manish and Kaypee were recognized and appreciated for their contributions by the Chetna Association of Canada represented by Jai Birdi, Surjit Bains, Jai Bains, Subhash Chander and Ambedkarite International Coordination Society’s Vice President Param Kainth. Anil Khanna and former cricket player Harry Kalkat were also present.

Manish and his team were recognized and appreciated for their tireless service to the diaspora and Canadians through consular, commerce, education, and cultural activities.

Kaypee was honored for his contributions to cricket and promoting fraternity and nation building through sports.

Sonia West, a member of Chetna’s Empowerment Committee, welcomed Manish with sweets and a package of ‘mungfali and revadeenas’, a gesture of renewal and new beginnings, an appropriate gift for the Lohri, celebrated as a folk festival in Punjab around January 13 every year. Manish expressed his greetings and gratitude to people of Indian origin for making contributions in various fields, including administration, commerce, trade, health

Amardip Singh Rai located and arrested by Surrey RCMP

SURREY RCMP announced on Tuesday that Amardip Singh Rai — who was wanted on 17 charges, including sexual assault, assault with a weapon and confining a person without lawful authority — has been arrested on his outstanding warrants by frontline officers.

On April 28, 2021, Rai was arrested by the Surrey RCMP Strike Force Target Team (SFTT) for an outstanding warrant pertaining to the August 2019 investigation. He was released by the courts on May 7, 2021, with conditions. It was alleged that Rai failed to appear for a subsequent court date and therefore a warrant was issued

for his arrest.

On January 20, 2022, Surrey RCMP had requested the public’s assistance with locating Rai. In October 2022, Rai was featured in the top 25 wanted across Canada by the Bolo Program.

On January 8, 2023, Surrey RCMP frontline officers were proactively working to locate individuals with outstanding warrants. Through investigation, officers were able to confirm that Rai was inside a residence in the 17400-block of 64 Avenue. The residence was secured and a Feeney warrant was sought to enter the residence and arrest him. [A Feeney warrant is a type of ar-

rest warrant that gives the police the power to come onto your property, and into your home or business to arrest the person whose name is in the warrant, according to stepstojustice.ca]

The Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response Team assisted with executing the warrant and Rai was taken into police custody without incident. He was transported to Surrey RCMP cells and remains in custody awaiting his next court appearance.

care, and the service industry. Kaypee also congratulated the diaspora for their contributions to Canada as well as India.

On behalf of the Consulate General, Manish presented Jai Birdi, General Secretary of Chetna Association of Canada, with a shawl as a gesture of respect and appreciation for increasing awareness and enhancing inclusion.

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is celebrated in India to mark the contributions of ‘nonresidents of India’ to the development of India and to strengthen ties between India and the global Indian community.

Loaded shotgun, drugs and cash seized from Whalley residence

SURREY RCMP on Tuesday seized drugs, cash and a loaded shotgun from a residence in the Whalley area.

On January 11, Surrey RCMP North Community Response Unit (NCRU), with assistance from the Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response Team and the Surrey RCMP Mobile Street Enforcement Team (MSET), executed a search warrant at a residence in the 13700-block of Grosvenor Road.

The search warrant was issued under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, stemming from an ongoing investigation into drug traffick-

ing in the neighbourhood.

Eight people were arrested inside the residence at the time the search warrant was executed.

Through the search of the residence, police located and seized:

* a loaded shotgun

* 6 airsoft pistols

* 1 airsoft rifle

* 1.4 kilograms of suspected methamphetamine

* 184 grams of suspected fentanyl

* 110 grams of suspected cocaine, and

* over $7,000 of Canadian currency

One person was held in custody for breach of probation and the others were released pending further investigation.

Surrey RCMP said it is working closely with City of Surrey Bylaw Enforcement to ensure the neighbourhood remains safe and free from further criminal activity at this location as part of an ongoing initiative that targets problem properties.

“Residents deserve to feel safe and secure in their neighborhoods,” said Staff-Sgt. Nigel Pronger of Surrey RCMP’s Community Response Unit. “If you observe suspicious activity, criminal behaviour or something that negatively affects safety in our community, you are encouraged to call police. Our goal is to address safety concerns and ensure our neighbourhoods are a great place to live and work for everybody.”

Pastor arrested for sexual assault of children

IN the spring of 2022, the New Westminster Police Department began an investigation stemming from multiple reports of sexual interference against children with the alleged offences occurring between 2017 and 2021.

After a lengthy investigation by the New Westminster Police Department Major Crime Unit, as well as with the assistance of the Saanich Police Department, Pastor Edwin Alvarez was arrested in Saanich on January 4 and charged with three counts of sexual interference and three counts of sexual assault. “We encourage anyone who believes they may have been a victim of sexual violence to come forward and report the incident to police,” said Sgt. Justine Thom on Monday. “We

take these reports seriously, and this case is an example of how offenders can be prosecuted well after the date of the offence.”

At the time of the assault, Alvarez was a pastor at a small church in the Metro Vancouver area.

The New Westminster Police Department said that it understands that while sexual assaults often cause long-lasting trauma, survivors may have difficulty speaking about the incidents with friends, family members, or police officers. If someone is not ready to report to police, but is ready to seek support, they are requested to contact Emergency Sexual Assault Support Program (ESAS) at Cameray at 236-668-6687 or esas@cameray.ca.

January 1-11, 2023 catalytic converter target makes/models.

DELTA Police Department says it is experiencing a high number of catalytic converter thefts. Since January 1, 2023, it has received 33 reports of catalytic converter thefts. Most of these thefts have occurred overnight and are spread throughout Delta.

likelihood of identifying a converter following a theft purchase an aftermarket protective shield that adds a layer of security to your catalytic converter

The DPD also encourages the community

to immediately report any suspicious activity, such as a car idling with a driver in it while a passenger has exited and is casing vehicles. In such instances, the DPD asks that you call 911 to report what may be a theft in progress

so that its team can catch those responsible. If you know of someone committing catalytic converter thefts but wish to remain anonymous, you can report it to CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Catalytic converters are stolen because they contain several precious metals more valuable than gold. As of December 2022, rhodium was worth $12,600/ounce, palladium $1,854/ounce, and platinum $1,021/ounce.

As thieves need access to the underside of a vehicle to steal a catalytic converter, vehicles with higher platforms are the most targeted. While various makes and models are targeted, Hyundai and Kia SUVs remain the highest targeted vehicles. Cutting and removing a catalytic converter from a vehicle takes less than one minute.

The DPD says it utilizes proactive policing strategies and also deploys plain-clothes officers who conduct targeted enforcement on known property crime offenders to prevent such thefts. However, it believes that the high value of the catalytic converters and the ability to rapidly remove them from a vehicle has potentially increased the number of unknown offenders stealing them.

Acting Inspector James Sandberg notes that the DPD “is working to bring awareness to the catalytic converter theft trend witnessed this year” and adds: “We encourage our community to be our partners in preventing such thefts by considering some tips we offer.”

Tips:

* park in a well-lit area or a garage

* park your vehicle in view of a CCTV security camera

* pay attention to odd sounds, such as a battery-powered saw or grinder

* have an auto shop engrave your vehicle’s identification number onto your catalytic converter as this improves the

Axe and Ladder Championships in Goodwill Classic

The 21st-annual senior girls basketball tournament held the finals for both divisions on Saturday, January 7 at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary.

The Dragons narrowly defended their title against the Holy Cross Crusaders in an overtime nailbiter, eking out the win 44-42. It was a hard-fought victory following up on last year’s dominant finals performance, beating Semiahmoo Secondary 68-45.

Meanwhile, North Surrey edged out Tamanawis Secondary after fending off the 2022 Ladder champs, Johnston Heights Secondary, in the semifinals of the 15-team division.

This year’s Goodwill Classic marks a return to January tournaments, as last year’s was postponed to March 2022 and the 2021 edition was cancelled entirely, both due to the pandemic.

44-year-old man shot in Surrey’s Whalley

ON Wednesday at approximately 2:20 a.m., Surrey RCMP received multiple 911 calls that a man had been shot near a convenience store in the 13100-block of 104 Avenue in Whalley. Police located a 44-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to hospital with serious injuries.

The Surrey RCMP General Investigation Unit

has taken conduct of the investigation. Based on initial information, it appears there was an altercation between parties believed to be known to each other that escalated and resulted in one man being shot.

The investigation is still in the early stages and officers are working to collect evidence and identify possible suspects.

B.C.’s health system more quickly

THE Province announced on Monday that it is making it easier for internationally educated nurses to work in B.C.’s health-care system with new financial supports and a faster, more efficient assessment pathway. Internationally educated nurses (IENs) will no longer be required to pay application and assessment fees upfront, which cost more than $3,700. These fees will be covered directly by the Province in order to remove financial barriers for internationally educated workers who want to work in B.C.

“Supporting nurses is key to our work to making health care accessible to all British Columbians. Still, the demand for nurses is outpacing the supply,” said Premier David Eby. “There are talented and skilled nurses with the right experience who want to practise in B.C. and support high-quality care, but they are kept on the sidelines by an expensive and complicated registration process. Whether a nurse was trained in or out of the province, we are ready to welcome those who are ready to care for British Columbians.”

The Province is also providing new financial support to nurses returning to practice after a period of absence. Nurses looking to return to practice will no longer be required to pay a $300 application fee, and more than $4,000 in financial support will be available to cover assessment and eligible travel costs

for nurses taking assessments in order to reenter the workforce.

Nurses returning to practice will also be eligible to access as much as $10,000 in bursaries for any additional education required for returning to practice.

“By removing the barriers for more nurses to join our health-care workforce, we are ensuring that people throughout the province

have greater access to the health services they need, when they need them,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health. “Our government will continue to take action to recruit and train more health-care workers to meet the health-care needs of British Columbians. In creating more accessible careers for nurses in B.C., we are delivering on our commitment to build a sustainable health system for many years to come.”

In April 2022, government announced $12 million to provide bursaries for IENs, launch a new marketing campaign, provide navigational supports to new and incoming IENs through HealthMatch BC, and launch a consolidated assessment approach. This has enabled some IENs to join the health-care system more quickly in the role that most closely matches their education and experience.

Since then, 5,500 people have expressed interest in working in B.C., with 2,000 people actively working through the various stages of the registration and assessment process. More than 90% of nursing applications received in 2022 by the BC College of Nurses

and Midwives (BCCNM) came following these changes.

“The Province is committed to making it easier and less costly for internationally educated nurses and return-to-practice nurses to become licensed to practise in British Columbia and join the health workforce,” said Harwinder Sandhu, Parliamentary Secretary for Senior’s Services and Long-Term Care.

“As a nurse educated outside of Canada, I have first-hand knowledge that it could take years for an IEN to be granted registration.

I am glad to see the progress made by the BC College of Nurses and Midwives, and the Nursing Community Assessment Service to streamline the process for credential and competency assessments for IENs. The contribution of IENs to our health care is far reaching. They bring a wealth of experience, knowledge and dedication to their work. I am proud of our government’s commitment to welcoming more people to join the nursing profession so that our public health system can be well-supported in the long run.”

In September 2022, the Province also committed up to $1.3 million to set up a new pathway to make it more efficient for IENs to obtain licensure in B.C. The funding will support BCCNM and the Nursing Community Assessment Service in creating a new streamlined approach to assessment and registration, so that more IEN applications can be assessed by BCCNM each year. This is expected to reduce the waiting period for nurses looking to work in B.C., from three years to approximately four months to nine months.

This announcement is part of B.C.’s broader Health Human Resources Strategy, which was announced on September 29, 2022. The strategy supports patients by ensuring they get the health services they need and are cared for by a healthy workforce. It focuses on 70 key actions to retain, recruit and train health-care workers, while redesigning the health-care system to foster workplace satisfaction and innovation.

MORE renters in B.C. will be protected from housing speculators and profiteers through the creation of a new $500-million Rental Protection Fund dedicated to protecting tenants and preserving affordable rental homes for decades, the government announced on Thursday.

“Today, we’re taking action to protect renters who found an affordable place to live, but are worried their building will be bought out from underneath them,” said Premier David Eby.

“This fund will allow non-profits to secure older rental buildings and protect vulnerable renters from speculators who can drive up rents and evict tenants who have lived there for years. Instead, community non-profits will now be able to work with tenants to make improvements or expand to house more people, and at the same time protect affordable housing.”

Increasingly, in B.C. and across Canada, older rental housing buildings are being bought by speculators and large corporations, such as real-estate investment trusts. Their business

model often includes redeveloping properties so they can evict tenants, allowing the trusts to make large profits by either hiking rents or selling the units and taking much-needed rental housing off the market, the government said.

The Rental Protection Fund will provide onetime capital grants to non-profit housing organizations so they can purchase affordable residential rental buildings and ownership cooperatives listed for sale to protect the renters who are living there and safeguard those rental units for the longer term. The fund is expected to protect thousands of affordable housing units throughout the province.

A new report from BC Housing shows 2022 had the highest number of new purpose-built rental units on record. A total of 14,546 rental units were registered last year, representing a 10% increase from 2021. In 2012, BC Housing recorded fewer than 2,000 new rental units.

“Our province is building more rental housing than ever, but we must also protect what we have. It’s not acceptable for speculators to be pushing renters out of their homes,” said Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Housing. “By protecting more affordable housing, more people can stay in their homes and build a good life in B.C.”

Non-profit organizations will be supported in obtaining private financing so income generated by current rents will sustain the financing and operating costs of the property, minimizing the financial involvement of the Province.

The fund will be managed by an external entity, the Housing Protection Fund Society, consisting of the BC Non-Profit Housing Association (BCNPHA), Co-operative Housing Federation B.C. (CHFBC), and the Aboriginal Housing Management Association (AHMA).

“Everyone deserves to feel secure in their home,” said Spencer Chandra Herbert, MLA for Vancouver-West End, who was recently appointed as the Premier’s Liaison for Renters.

“The failure to build and protect rental housing helped create the crisis we are in today. Our government is taking bold action to ensure everyone in our province has access to housing they can afford.”

The Rental Protection Fund will be operational in the coming months and will be financed prior to March 31, 2023.

Recall petition to be issued in Vancouver-Point Grey electoral district

ELECTIONS BC announced on Tuesday that a recall petition will be issued in the Vancouver-Point Grey electoral district, after it received a petition application that met the requirements of the Recall and Initiative Act.

The subject of the recall petition is Premier David Eby, MLA for Vancouver-Point Grey. The proponent of the recall is Salvatore Vetro.

Elections BC said in a press release that under theRecall and Initiative Act, any registered voter in British Columbia can apply to have a recall petition issued for their electoral district. They must submit an application form, a $50 processing fee, and a statement of 200 words or less on why they feel the Member should be recalled. Applications must be approved if these legislated criteria are met. Elections BC does not have discretion to evaluate applications on any other criteria.

The petition will be issued on January 17, at which time registered canvassers may begin collecting signatures. The petition must be returned to Elections BC no later than March 20.

For the petition to be successful, registered

canvassers must collect signatures from 40% or more of the voters eligible to sign the petition, or 16,449 voters. To be eligible to sign the petition, an individual must be a registered voter, and must have been a registered voter in the Vancouver-Point Grey electoral district on October 24, 2020 (General Voting Day for the last provincial election).

The expenses limit for both the proponent and the Member is $33,902.72. The expenses limit for recall advertising sponsors is $5,839.16.

If the petition is submitted and it is clear that the signature threshold has not been met, Elections BC will take no further action. If the petition is submitted and it is possible that the signature threshold has been met, Elections BC will have 42 days to verify that those who signed the petition were eligible to do so. In the event of a successful recall petition, the recalled Member’s seat becomes vacant and a by-election must be called within 90 days. The recalled Member can run as a candidate in the by-election.

Elections BC noted that the Chief Electoral Officer has approved 27 previous recall petition applications since the Recall and Initia-

tive Act came into force in 1995. Six of those petitions were returned to Elections BC for verification. Of the six, five did not have enough valid signatures and one was halted during the verification process because the Member resigned.

There have been two previous recall petitions in Vancouver-Point Grey. Former Vancouver-Point Grey MLA Gordon Campbell was subject to recall petitions in 1998 and 2003. Both petitions failed because they were not submitted by the deadline.

NEW data released by BC Housing shows a record number of purpose-built rental homes will help increase needed rental stock in British Columbia.

The 2022 New Homes Registry Report shows that 14,546 purpose-built rental homes were registered in B.C. in 2022, the highest yearly total reached since BC Housing started collecting this data in 2002. For context, in 2012, BC Housing recorded fewer than 2,000 new rental units registered. “Our government is responding to the housing crisis by establishing the conditions needed to create a record number of purpose-built rentals started in 2022,” said Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Housing. “In addition to these successful efforts to add much-needed rental homes, 2022 was another banner year for housing registrations

homes registered in B.C. in 2022

overall. Together with the federal government, non-profits and the private sector, we recorded the second-highest number of new home registrations on record, adding crucial housing stock for individuals, families and seniors in B.C., including those moving to B.C.”

In total, 51,407 new homes were registered in B.C. in 2022. These include 9,037 single detached homes and 42,370 multiunit homes. This total is slightly lower than 2021, which was the highest year on record.

Registered new homes data is collected at the beginning of a project, before building permits are issued, making it a leading indicator of housing activity in B.C.

Quick Facts:

* Under the Homeowner Protection Act, all new homes in the province are required to be registered with BC Housing.

* The registration must occur prior to the issuance of building permits or prior to construction commencing in geographical areas where building permits are not required.

* The B.C. government is making the largest investment in housing in B.C.’s history – $7 billion in 10 years – and working with partners to deliver 114,000 affordable homes in 10 years.

* Since 2017, the Province has funded more than 36,000 affordable new homes that have been completed or are underway for people in B.C.

International Experience Canada program is now open to international youth

SEAN Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, on Monday announced that the International Experience Canada (IEC) season is now open to international youth who have expressed interest in gaining work and travel experience in Canada.

Those who are already in the IEC pool will begin receiving invitations to apply for their work permit.

This year, Canada will be extending this opportunity to nearly 90,000 international youth, as announced on December 1, 2022. This expansion will help Canadian employers find the workers they need to fill labour shortages across the country.

Canada has a long-standing history of supporting Canadian and international youth to travel and work abroad. IEC helps youth explore new cultures, languages and societies, all while developing life skills and improving their job prospects for the future.

Fraser said: “Our government supports international youth to work and travel in Canada, effectively helping employers find the workers they need. By giving youth the opportunity to gain international travel and work experience, we are strengthening our economy and creating a win-win solution for everyone involved.”

Randy Boissonnault, Minister of Tourism of Canada, said: “IEC is now open for nearly 90,000 international youth looking to gain valuable work and life experiences in Canada. This program brings a diverse range of skills and perspectives to our workforce, while also helping to address labour shortages in Canada’s tourism industry. At the same time, it provides Canadian youth with the opportunity to gain valuable work and life experiences abroad and to return home with an international perspective. IEC is a fantastic opportunity for both Canada’s tourism industry and the personal and professional development of young leaders at home and abroad.”

Marci Ien, Minister of Women and Gender Equality and Youth of Canada, added: ““IEC is an excellent resource for youth from Canada and 36 countries around the world to gain unforgettable work and life experiences. IEC helps young people not only develop new skills and explore different cultures, but also return home with an international perspective. IEC is a unique and exciting program, and we encourage all eligible youth to take advantage of it.”

Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion of Canada, said: “Many sectors and

regions in Canada are facing labour shortages. This is why supporting more international youth to visit and work in Canada will help Canadian businesses. The International Experience Canada program will support Canadian employers by offering international youth the opportunity to experience Canada while gaining valuable work experience.”

Quick Facts:

* IEC is a reciprocal program that allows Ca-

nadian and international youth to work and travel in each other’s countries.

* On December 19, 2022, the IEC pools opened to allow international youth to create an online profile.

* While Canadian youth can apply for the program year-round, international candidates can only apply at certain times of the year, typically December until fall. Canada has youth mobility arrangements with 36 countries and foreign territories through the IEC program that allow youth from Canada’s partner countries to work and travel in Canada for up to two years. The age of participants ranges from 18 to 35, depending on their country.

* The program has three participation categories:

- Working Holiday participants receive an open work permit that allows them to work anywhere in the host country to support their travels.

- International Co-op (Internship) participants receive an employer-specific work permit that allows students to gain targeted experience in their field of study.

- Young Professionals participants receive an employer-specific work permit to gain targeted, professional work experience that is within their field of study or career path.

Attempted carjacking in Delta leads to arrest of one person

ON Wednesday shortly after 9 p.m., the Delta Police Department (DPD) received calls from witnesses reporting an attempted carjacking in the 8000-block of Scott Road.

DPD and Surrey RCMP officers located the suspect near the intersection of 80 Avenue and Scott Road. Police advised the suspect that he was under arrest; however, the suspect failed to comply with the officers’ instructions.

As a result, a DPD officer deployed one 40mm less-than-lethal projectile, striking the suspect in the leg. The suspect immediately complied with follow-up police commands, and no further use of force was required.

The suspect was arrested and transported to the hospital for medical clearance. The carjacking victim did not receive any

injury.

The DPD said that it would like to acknowledge and thank the witnesses who reported the incident and the action they took to keep an eye on the suspect in a manner that ensured their safety. It added that this incident highlights the importance of a strong partnership between the community and the DPD.

The DPD said it ensures that its officers are trained in de-escalation techniques and supplied with modern less-than-lethal tools to safely intervene in high-risk situations.

Acting Inspector James Sandberg said on Thursday: “We are proud of the actions our officers took in this situation. In a high-stress and dynamic situation, our officers relied on their Integrated Communications and Tactics (ICAT) training to safely arrest the sus-

pect.”

Police said that some inaccurate information was shared on social media shortly after the incident’s occurrence.

Sandberg said: “We continue to be challenged by the speed of social media. We

ask the public to not speculate or share information without knowing accurate details. We remain committed to keeping our community aware by sharing relevant and public safety information as soon as possible.”

THIS week marks 50 days with David Eby as our Premier, and I know the positive impacts are already being felt in people’s lives across British Columbia.

Last week, the new Affordability Credit landed in people’s bank accounts. With as much as $410 going to families in B.C., this will make a difference when it comes to people being able to afford their groceries and bills.

In December, child care costs for families were reduced again – by as much as $550 per month for each child. Saving families over $5,000 per year helps take pressure off parents, so they can pursue their career or education goals while knowing their child care fees are affordable.

Additionally, we credited $100 to BC Hydro customers to help people heat their homes in the colder months, and we recently froze ICBC Basic Rates for two years.

We have also introduced new legislation to increase the housing supply across the province, putting an end to restrictions on rentals that were leaving units empty.

We are also listening to British Columbians about their safety concerns within their communities. That is why we are enhancing support for police teams across the province to strengthen their capacity to keep people safe.

Healthcare remains one of the top issues that I hear about from people, and it’s one of our top priorities. We’re building new hospitals, a new medical school in Surrey, and signing a new deal to recruit and retain

more family doctors.

This week, Premier Eby announced another important step that will get more nurses working in B.C., faster. Effective immediately, our government will cover the costs, up front, for internationally-trained nurses to work here – anywhere in the province. By reducing the accreditation time of nurses from three years to 4-9 months, these qualified nurses can start working quicker.

In the last 50 days, we’ve taken huge strides to deliver results to people in B.C. where they need it most. And we’re just getting started.

As we enter a new year, we are continuing to focus on helping people with the cost of living, ensuring people feel safe in their communities, and taking action to improve our healthcare system, all while building a strong sustainable economy.

NDP delays access to vital mental health and substance use services at Peach Arch Hospital: BC Liberals

BC Liberal MLAs are calling for action from Premier David Eby and the NDP as a new mental health and substance use unit slated to open at Peace Arch Hospital last summer still hasn’t opened.

“A year ago, the NDP announced a new dedicated mental health and substance use unit as part of renovations to the Peace Arch Hospital to be completed in the Summer of 2022, but six months later it still hasn’t opened,” said Surrey-White Rock MLA Trevor Halford on Tuesday. “My community was promised

this essential facility would be operational by now, but an ongoing dispute between the Province and Fraser Health has left the doors closed, preventing the delivery of vital care to people in need.”

The total cost of the overhaul at Peace Arch Hospital including the new mental health and substance use unit, billed as creating 10 additional care spaces, rose to $91.05 million, of which $38.5 million was paid for by the Peace Arch Hospital Foundation’s fundraising efforts.

been in the works since the previous BC Liberal government,” said Mental Health and Addictions Critic Elenore Sturko. “Whether it is an issue within the health authority or the government, the buck stops with the Premier and he needs to explain this unacceptable delay to the people of Surrey and White Rock.” She added: “We are on the precipice of a historic change to drug policy, with decriminalization just a few weeks away. One of the obligations in the Province’s agreement with the federal government is the improvement of access to health services, but delays like this show how the NDP government is already failing to meet its responsibilities. With six people dying from a drug overdose in B.C. every day, this is genuinely a life-or-death situation — we cannot afford this unacceptable delay to mental health and substance use care in B.C.”

BC Liberals slam Eby for calling strata loophole that allows exclusion of families “good news”

THE BC Liberals on Wednesday said that as B.C. strata councils grapple with the chaos created by Premier David Eby’s botched strata legislation, Eby has recently called a loophole limiting housing options for young people and families “good news.”

“Despite Eby’s claims he will create more homes for British Columbians, the Premier has changed his story at the first sign of pushback against his poorly thought-out changes,” said Karin Kirkpatrick, BC Liberal Critic for Housing. “When Eby forced through his changes to strata legislation last November, he celebrated that the removal of most age restrictions would help people of all ages find affordable homes. However, as Eby’s botched legislation is forcing a wave of stratas to utilize a loophole to adopt a 55+ restriction, Eby is now claiming this is what he had in mind all along — despite its potential negative implications for housing supply in B.C.”

The BC Liberals said that during a recent interview about strata councils moving to adopt 55+ age restrictions, Eby said, “it’s not really a loophole,” and that the expanded use of age restrictions is “actually good news.” Eby

further misleadingly stated that this loophole was always the intention of the policy change, which contradicts comments from Eby and then-housing minister Murray Rankin when the legislation was first introduced.

“The NDP claimed that discriminating against young people and families in the housing market is no longer acceptable, but now they’ve gone and made the situation worse through their rushed Strata Act changes,” said Kirkpatrick. “Our BC Liberal Caucus raised concerns about the unintended consequences of this legislation back in November, but we were repeatedly dismissed by the NDP who were more concerned with shutting down debate than ensuring the changes help generate more housing supply.”

She added: “Instead of creating chaos for strata councils, Eby should have paused his strata changes for broader consultation. But now, with his sloppy legislation and recent contradictions, Eby has alienated both strata councils frustrated with the changes and young people and families desperate to find homes they can afford.”

New Delhi (IANS): Slamming Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat over his recent remarks on Muslims, the opposition parties came together on Wednesday, terming the comments as provocative and aimed at inciting violence against Muslims.

In a recent interview to the Organiser and the Panchjanya, both RSS mouthpieces, Bhagwat said that there is no threat to Islam in India, or to Muslims who wish to pursue their faith or seek to "return to" the faith of their ancestors, but they will have to "abandon their boisterous rhetoric of supremacy".

Attacking Bhagwat on Wednesday, CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat termed his remarks as objectionable and anti-constitutional.

"Now RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat will decide who should live in the country. If Bhagwat and the Hindu brigade have not read, then they must read the Constitution, especially Articles 14 and 15. Every citizen has equal rights in the country, irrespective of his/her religion," Karat said.

The CPI(M) leader also termed Bhagwat's remarks as controversial, unconstitutional and provocative.

"Mohan Bhagwat is directly inciting people to commit violence against Muslims," she said, adding that the court should take suo motu cognisance of the RSS chief's comments.

and former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Digvijaya Singh, said, "The success of Bharat Jodo Yatra is affecting the RSS as well. There is no talk of a Hindu nation in the Constitution. They (RSS) do not know Sanatan Dharma at all, they are just selling Sanatan Dharma for a chair."

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi also targeted Bhagwat, saying, "Who is Mohan Bhagwat to 'allow' Muslims to live in India or follow their religion? We are Indians because Allah willed. Bhagwat has not given us citizenship. Then how dare he imposes 'conditions'? We are not here to 'adjust' our faith or to please a group of so-called 'brahmacharis' sitting in Nagpur."

Owaisi also said that the ideology of RSS is a threat to the future of India.

"The sooner Indians recognise the real 'enemies within', the better. No civilised society can tolerate such hatred and bigotry in

the name of religion. Who chose Mohan Bhagwat as the representative of Hindus? Is he contesting elections in 2024? We welcome him, if he does," Owaisi said.

Commenting on the RSS chief's remarks, former Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP MP Kapil Sibal tweeted: "Bhagwat: Hindusthan should remain Hindusthan. Agree. But: Insaan should remain Insaan."

Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut tweeted that one cannot do politics for long by creating fear in the minds of people.

In the interview, the RSS chief had said: "The simple truth is -- Hindusthan should remain Hindusthan. There is no harm to the Muslims living in Bharat today. If they wish to stick to their religion, they can. If they want to return to the faith of their ancestors, they can. It is entirely their choice. Islam has nothing to fear. But at the same time, Muslims must abandon their boisterous rhetoric of supremacy."

New Delhi (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that India's aim as holder of the G20 presidency is to amplify the "voice of the Global South".

Addressing the opening session of the two-day "Voice of the Global South" virtual summit, Modi said: "For our G20 Presidency, we have chosen the theme of 'One Earth, One Family, One Future'. This is in line with our civilizational ethos. We believe the path to realising ‘oneness' is through humancentric development. People of Global South should no longer be excluded from the fruits of development.

"Together we must attempt to redesign global political and financial governance. This can remove inequities, enlarge opportunities, support growth and spread progress and prosperity."

The Prime Minister further said that the Global South has the largest stakes in the future, as three-fourths of humanity lives in these countries.

"We should also have equivalent voice. Hence, as the eight-decade old model of global governance slowly changes, we should try to shape the emerging order," he emphasised.

Modi also said that despite the challenges being faced by the developing world, he was optimistic that Global South's time is coming.

"The need of the hour is to identify simple, scalable and sustainable solutions that can transform our societies and economies. With such an approach, we shall overcome the difficult challenges- whether it is poverty, universal healthcare or building human capacities.

Joshimath crisis: Demolition of unsafe houses, two hotels begins

Joshimath (Uttarakhand) (IANS):

The demolition of houses and two hotels rendered unsafe due to land subsidence here has started on Thursday. The two hotels -- Hotel Malari Inn and Hotel Mount View, besides developing cracks, have also tilted backwards.

The demolition is being done under the supervision of the Central Building Research Institute by teams of National Disaster Response Force, Public Works Department and State Disaster Response Force.

According to sources, the demolition of the hotels began after discussion on compensation was held between the property owners and the district administration.

The Uttarakhand government has announced an amount of Rs 150,000 per affected family.

A State Disaster Response Force official has said the demolition would not be done in the night due to the cold weather and rainfall.

Earlier, the local residents were assured that they would be given appropriate compensation.

Later, people staging demonstrations against the demolition were also asked to disperse.

According to the report, the land subsidence was slow between April and November 2022, during which Joshimath had sunk by 8.9 cm. But between December 27, 2022 and January 8, 2023, the intensity of land subsidence increased and the town sank by 5.4 cm in these 12 days.

The satellite images show that the Joshimath-Auli road is also going to collapse due to the land subsidence.

Therefore, we have to evaluate the cost and the benefit of the project from the socio-environment perspective and the cultural cost”, Prakash says.

Because the entire Himalayan region is one ecosystem it means that the impact of any development project has to look at the entire region”, he says in connection to future planning.

Delhi court denies bail to man accused of urinating on Air India passenger

New Delhi, Jan 11 (IANS):

A Delhi court on Wednesday denied bail to Shankar Mishra, who is accused of urinating on an elderly female co-passenger, while in a drunken state, on a New York-New Delhi flight in November last year.

Metropolitan Magistrate, Patiala House Courts, Komal Garg, who had reserved the verdict earlier, rejected the plea, saying that the alleged act of accused of relieving himself upon the complainant is “utterly disgusting and repulsive” and the act itself is sufficient to outrage the modesty of a woman.

“The egregious conduct of

the accused has shocked the civic consciousness and needs to be deprecated,” it said, noting that the accused was voluntarily drunk and had

consumed alcohol during the night and the said fact has not been denied by him.

“It has also come on record that accused has tried con-

tacting the victim and the possibility of accused influencing the witnesses cannot be ruled out. Further, as per the report of the IO, the other witnesses are yet to be interrogated and the investigation is at a very initial stage,” the court said. Appearing for Mishra, advocate Manu Sharma stated before the court that Delhi Police registered a First Information Report in only one non-bailable offense, while others are bailable offenses.

The Public Prosecutor opposed the accused’s request for bail on the grounds that the accused is a powerful individual and, if granted bail, could

sway the complainant.

The PP also said that the police have filed a revision petition against denial of police remand and that is listed for Thursday. The court was further told that statements of three crew members and twothree passengers are yet to be recorded.

The complainant’s lawyer contended that intoxication could never be used as an excuse, adding that the court has to examine whether bail can be granted to an offender who first apologised but later recanted.

The lawyer also told the court that the accused’s father had

messaged the victim on WhatsApp saying karma will hit her but later deleted the message. On January 7, the court sent Mishra to 14 days judicial custody.

Mishra has been booked under Sections 510 (misconduct in public by a drunken person), 509 (insulting the modesty of a woman), 294 (sings, recites or utters any obscene song, ballad or words, in or near any public place), and 354 (intending to outrage modesty) of the Indian Penal Code as well as a section of the Aircraft Rules Act in a case registered at the IGI Airport police station.

Leicester violence: Cops release images of wanted men

London (IANS): The UK police have released ‘bodycam’ images of 10 men wanted in connection with the Leicester communal clashes, which erupted last autumn following a cricket match between India and Pakistan.

In a statement, the Leicester police said they have been working with detectives scouring through “many hours” of CCTV and bodyworn video.

“However, there are a number -- those pictured -- who haven’t yet been identified, and we are asking for public help to find out who they are,” said the statement.

So far, nearly 100 people have been arrested in connection with the disorder, including the recent arrest of 12 men last month.

The men, in between the age groups of 25-42, were arrested for alleged public order offences, breaching bail conditions, violent disorder, and possession of offensive weapons.

Detective Chief Inspector Rob Arthur, who is leading the investigations, said: “With nearly 100 arrests now of those we have identified, we are working hard to find out who the remaining men are.

“To be able to do this, we need help from the public.”

Police said there will be more images to come in the coming weeks, “to make sure we have spoken to everyone who was been captured

on some footage”.

Up to 25 officers, and a police dog, were among those injured trying to curb the communal violence, which had continued over several weeks.

Pakistan’s forex reserves at lowest level since 2014

Karachi (IANS): Pakistan’s central bank forex reserves have plunged to their lowest level since February 2014 after a decline of 22.11 per cent, posing a serious challenge for the country in financing imports, local media reported. Thursday’s announcement by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) came as the country is in dire need of foreign aid to reduce its current account deficit as well as ensure enough reserves to pay its debt obligations for the ongoing financial year, Geo News reported.

Coupled with another $5.8 billion held by commercial banks, the nation has $10.2 billion in reserves - enough to pay for just three weeks of imports.

During the week ended on January 6, the central bank’s forex reserves fell $1,233 million, or 22.12 per cent, to $4,343.2 million, a statement from the central bank said, down from last

week’s reserves of $5,576.5 million. Pakistan’s economy has crumbled alongside a simmering political crisis, with the rupee plummeting and inflation at decades-high levels, but devastating floods and a global energy crisis have piled on further pressure, Geo News reported.

The reserves, which hit their lowest level since February 2014, will now only provide import cover worth 0.82 months, as the country tries to lessen imports amid a greenback shortage.

Last week, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar had said that Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves would “strengthen” in the coming days as he banked on friendly countries for inflows.

The central bank mentioned that the country repaid $1,233 million in external debt. This repayment has been reflected in the data released on Thursday.

Fatehgarh Sahib (Punjab) (IANS): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, spearheading the Bharat Jodo Yatra, on Wednesday said the march was against the politics of fear and hatred promoted by the BJP and the RSS, and their attempt to divide India on the lines of religion, caste and language.

“That is not our history”, he said, “our history is of love, mutual brotherhood and unity among people”.

Addressing a public meeting before beginning the Punjab leg of the march, Gandhi said he felt humbled to have visited the site of the martyrdom of the two young sons of Guru Gobind Singh, who chose to lay down their lives in the fight against injustice and intolerance. He also thanked the people and the party workers for participating in the yatra so early in the morning despite the biting cold.

Drawing a clear, ideological distinction between the BJP and the Congress, Gandhi said, “while they (BJP) practice the politics of hatred, violence and fear, we practice the politics of love, unity and brotherhood”.

Gandhi said in the journey of about 3,000 km so far, he had met diverse sections of the people, including farmers, traders, small shopkeepers, labourers, unemployed youth and students. “The purpose of this yatra is to listen to people rather than telling our own point of view.”

Former Aam Aadmi Party MP from Patiala, Dharamvir Gandhi, and film actress Jonita Dhoda also joined the yatra.

Gandhi also interacted later with senior exservicemen and a panel of Punjabi historians, economists, sociologists, and agricultural experts.

He was on the 117th day of the Bharat Jodo Yatra that began in Kanyakumari on September 7, 2022, and will culminate with the hoisting of the tricolour in Srinagar on January 30.

Safe Surrey Coalition urges residents to attend public hearing and support agricultural land preservation

THE Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) will be holding a public hearing on January 23 to consider a proposal to include 123.6 hectares (305 acres) of land in South Surrey in the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR). This land that has been leased by a local farmer — the Heppell family — for field crop production for the past 50 years, is under threat of being developed into industrial buildings.

In response to this, Surrey Councillors Doug Elford and Mandeep Nagra of the Safe Surrey Coalition are urging all residents to attend the public hearing and to send in written submissions in support of including these lands in the ALR.

“During our previous term on Council, we introduced and passed a motion to include these lands within the ALR, to protect the valuable agricultural land from being developed. We believe that preserving and protect-

THE City of Surrey is launching budget engagement to seek feedback ahead of the 2023 budget process to hear the community’s priorities and what’s important to them. Feedback collected from upcoming open houses and an online survey will be used to help inform and prepare a draft budget for review by the Finance Committee prior to Council’s adoption of the budget.

Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke said that in preparing for the 2023 budget, Council must carefully consider new directions emerging out of City strategies and community priorities for funding City services, facilities and in-

ing these lands is essential for the local community and the entire province,” said Nagra. “Pausing development and proceeding only

with smart development by including these lands into the ALR was Safe Surrey Coalition’s key platform promise to voters. Councillor Nagra and I are committed to delivering on our promise,” said Elford.

The Heppell family has been farming these lands for half a century and it produces some of the earliest vegetable crops not just for Western Canada, but for all of Canada. Elford and Nagra urged residents to join them in supporting this important cause.

The hearing is scheduled for Monday, January 23 at 7 p.m. at Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Langley campus auditorium located at 20901 Langley Bypass.

Anyone who may be affected and wishes to be heard by the ALC can do so in person at the public hearing or by providing a written submission in advance of the hearing. Written submissions can be emailed to ALC.Re-

frastructure. There are also a number of economic challenges and influencing factors that must be considered, along with the desire to keep property taxes and fees at a manageable level for residents and business owners.

Locke said: “Our budget process is still underway and no decisions have been finalized yet, including required tax increases needed to balance the budget. The extent of tax increases within the draft budget will be based on the Province’s decision [about police of jurisdiction in Surrey] as well as other external factors like inflation and economic impacts, as well as community engagement

findings.”

The open houses and survey aim to inform the public on the budget process, ask what priorities are most important to them, and ask what funding options they most support in order to create a balanced budget. Community members are invited to attend any of four upcoming open houses:

* Saturday, January 14 at Guildford Recreation Centre from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

* Tuesday, January 17 at South Surrey Recreation Centre from 4 p.m.-7 p.m.

* Thursday, January 19 at Newton Recreation Centre from 4 p.m.-7 p.m.

ferrals@gov.bc.ca.

The ALC will make its decision “in early 2023” after the public hearing.

* Saturday, January 21 at North Surrey Sport & Ice Complex from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

The engagement sessions and survey input focus on the general operating and capital program component of the 2023 Five-Year (2023–2027) Financial Plan. The third budget component, which addresses utilities and other self-funded programs proceeds directly to the Finance Committee for review and subsequent public hearing, and ultimately, Council consideration and adoption.

The Smart Investment: Why Every Family Should Consider Life Insurance

LIFE insurance is a necessary component of a comprehensive financial plan that helps to ensure the financial security and well-being of your loved ones in the event of your unexpected death.

The death benefit, which is the amount of money paid to your designated beneficiaries upon your passing, can be used to cover a wide range of expenses, including: Mortgage payments: The death benefit can help your loved ones maintain their home and cover the ongoing expenses associated with homeownership.

Educational costs: The death benefit can cover the cost of higher education for your children, helping to ensure they can pursue their dreams and reach their full potential. Living expenses: The death benefit can cover the day-to-day costs of maintaining a household, such as food, utilities, transportation, and healthcare.

In addition to providing financial support for your loved ones, life insurance can also be used to cover the costs of your final expenses, such as funeral costs, outstanding medical bills, and any other fees associated with your passing.

Life insurance benefits also extend to business owners, as it can provide funds to continue the business in the event of the owner’s death. It can also be used to manage and transfer wealth as part of an estate plan.

Vancouver back on track with green bin, garbage collection

THE City of Vancouver said on Monday that repeated major snowfalls in late December of last year had a significant impact on the City’s sanitation operations across Vancouver.

City crews have since worked extended hours, seven days per week to catch up on cancelled or delayed garbage and green bin collection for approximately 30,000 addresses. Garbage collection is now up to date throughout the city, while crews anticipate to be fully caught up on collecting green bins by Wednesday, January 11.

Unlike garbage and green bin collection, which are funded via City taxes and managed by the City, collection of blue box recyclables is provided to residents by Recycle BC through their contractor. Recycling from residents in British Columbia is the responsibility of the producers of those materials and it is managed by Recycle BC on behalf of producers. Recycling collection suffered similar service delays and cancellations due to snow and ice, and many residents are still waiting to have their service resume.

“I’ve been hearing frustration from many residents who are dealing with overflowing bins,” said Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim. “I hear your concerns loud and clear. Council has been working closely with City staff to get garbage and green bin collection back on track. My office has also reached out directly to Recycle BC’s Executive Director for a meeting to discuss the status of their services and when residents can expect collection of their recycling.”

While residents will be noticing a return to their regular green bin and garbage service, future interruptions due to extreme winter weather remain a possibility. To ensure reliable green bin service through the winter months, the City has adapted the green bin schedule to be bi-weekly in line with garbage collection. The change to a bi-weekly service also reduces the wear and tear on equipment and extends the life of the sanitation trucks, which are scheduled to be replaced..

Download the VanCollect app or go online for garbage and green bin collection schedules, notifications, and up-to-date service alerts.

Furthermore, a whole life insurance policy builds cash value over time, and the death benefit can help to replace the income that would have been earned if you had lived. Finally, life insurance can also be used to repay outstanding debts, such as mortgages, loans, and credit card balances, which can relieve your loved ones during a difficult time. It can also be used to meet the mortgage insurance requirement by some lenders in Canada.

It’s important to note that the coverage and benefits of life insurance policies vary depending on the specific policy; it’s essential to consult with a professional and shop around to find a policy that meets your particular needs. And also, it’s critical to review and adjust your coverage as your life circumstances change over time.

In conclusion, having a life insurance plan in place can provide significant peace of mind for you and your loved ones, knowing that your family will be taken care of in the event of your passing and that you will be leaving

a legacy that will support their future. As an independent insurance advisor working through Punjab Insurance Agency, I deal with different insurance companies offering plans for different types of insurance. I can explain to you the insurance plan options and coverage suitable for your needs and resources. Besides, I can also help you to purchase mortgage insurance, super visa insurance, disability insurance, critical illness insurance, extended medical plans, group medical plans, RESP, RRSP, travel insurance, TFSA accounts, health and dental plans along with estate planning suitable for your needs and resources. There are a few changes to the Hyundai’s flagship Palisade luxury orientated SUV, It has always been a high value, well performing nicely equipped family vehicle at a competitive price. New touches for 2023 include, a wider cascading grille set off by attractive new vertical LED composite lights plus a styled lower front skid plate element supporting the rugged good looks. At the rear, new vertical LED tail lamps and lower fascia skid plate details are present, while the new, 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels elegantly profile the substantial premium look.

Power is provided by an Atkinson cycle 3.8-liter V6, dual CVVT, direct-injected engine producing 291 horsepower. The transmission is an eight-speed automatic unit with a multi-plate torque converter and Hyundai’s HTRAC® four-wheel-drive fitted as standard.

The Palisade is offered in four trims — Essential ($41,399), Preferred ($46,399), Luxury ($50,599) and the new Ultimate Calligraphy ($54,899).

We tested the premium Ultimate Calligraphy trim, that arrives with: luxury quilted-leather seats and door panels as standard spec, microfiber-suede headliner, premium cargo sill protection plate and perforated-leather steering wheel. It also adds features like an Ergo Motion massaging driver’s seat, video full-display rear-view mirror, and reverse parking collision-avoidance assist. There is also further multiple device connection capability, HD radio and wireless smartphone connectivity (for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto). And navigation.

The Palisade has a great looking interior, with premium quality styling and materials. Opt for the top tier model’s and one gains the to die for luxurious quilted Nappa leather seats and trim. The center console has an updated “floating” design with good storage capacity. New expanded ambient lighting sets a mood in the Palisade set off by a mix of high-quality contrasting materials throughout the cabin. The Palisade offers drivers the ability to start the vehicle via remote key fob or via the Blue Link app.

The Palisade Calligraphy has a compre-

hensive dash with a 12.3-inch touchscreen, Also included is a 12-speaker, Harman/Kardon Surround Sound system, and a headup display, Voice Activating System, Keyless Entry, Keyless Start, heated steering Wheel, and Powered Heated seats, and 3-zone Climate Control. The rear second row gains separate captain’s heated, and ventilated seats.

Overall, the Palisade has wide supportive seats, and a spacious and comfortable front and rear cabin with lots of storage nooks and bins for those long family trips. You also gain multiple USB plugs (seven in total) plus a wireless charge pad up front in the top trim. Sixteen cupholders, in the eight-seater variants mean everyone’s needs are taken care of.

Access to the small adult or kids sized third-row seats is much easier in the Palisade with one touch folding second row seats, Rear second row passengers also gain built-in sun shades, and heated and cooled seat functions. In terms of cargo space, the hands-free power liftgate offers a cavernous area when the second- and third-row seats are folded.

On the road, the Palisade is impressively quiet. The eight-speed automatic shifts seamlessly and engine noise is muted

thanks to the good under-hood insulation, and special sound-deadening carpets. The powertrain tuning delivers smooth linear response and impressive acceleration. Maximum Power from the V6 is 291 hp @ 6000 rpm with max Torque at 262 lb-ft @ 5200 rpm. The Palisade handles and brakes very well with no issues.

Drivers can tune the Palisade by choosing different driving modes, via a dial that can select Normal, Comfort and a firmer Sport mode, plus Eco and a “Smart” set-

ting that automatically adapt to your driving style. There are also “terrain” settings, for Snow, Mud, and Sand –selected via a rotary knob that adjusts the AWD system’s parameters.

You are in serious good luck if you tow a boat or trailer, the Palisade offers an excellent standard towing capacity of 5,000 lb, (2,268 kg), which is top of its class by a large margin. All Palisades come with a two hitch, Trailer Sway Control, pre-wiring, and a heavy-duty transmission oil cooler as standard equipment, while an auto-levelling rear suspension and a Class III receiver hitch are optional.

The Palisade is very high on safety, and equipped with Hyundai’s full active safety suite, including lane-keeping assist, forward collision avoidance, plus blind spot monitoring with instrument cluster view, occupant monitoring system, and rear Safe Exit Assist system.

I just have to recommend the Palisade very highly. Even the base model is very well equipped and superb value. Quality is high, and the cabin is brilliant in execution. Downsides are few, the V6 can be thirsty and there is no Hybrid or ALL- electric version…as yet. However, with a versatile roomy interior layout and the best towing capacity in its class, the Palisade is one heck of a good buy for any active family. Highly recommended.

Now and then comes along a film with some historical perspective. And a drop kick or too. Action fans who follow the way of the East should thoroughly enjoy Tne Grandmaster of Kung Fu. Enjoy this sparkling well conceived martial arts extravaganza from Well Go USA Learn from the past. That’s what China has done oh so well. Now one of two legitimate super powers along with reigning champion the United States by hook or by crook there is a new player on the block. But it was not so easy for China to move forward. Not too long ago the Chinese state was under the threat of Japan. During these trying times Japanese army officials controlled Tianjin and a number of mainland China territories, albeit temporarily.

The dragon rises. Against this historical backdrop The Grandmaster of King Fu zeroes in on a succession ritual for leader of a local Chinese Kung Fu Association. So something right out of a Bruce Lee develops with a fight for the leadership. Enter a frivolous peasant who rises to the challenges. This man with non name, otherwise known as Hugo Yuanjia earns

some respect of the club and then sails off into the sunset. Well, not so fast. Thanks to Duo Yuhang we care deeply for this messenger of peace. Yes the former Wushu champion also known as Denis To acquits himself very well here. Remember these are troubled times in China. With the ruthless Japanese army trying to exert control over the region higher ups in The Land of the Rising Sun hierarchy concoct a plan to take over all Chinese Kung Fu in the territory. Well, you can

just imagine what happens from there.

So by hook and by crook a campaign of terror is meted out against the local Chinese. Not willing to turn the other cheek any longer it’s all up to one man to try to defend Kung Fu, the Chinese way.

Wall to wall action, fun, courageous stunts and some serious soul searching and second guessing make The Grandmaster of Kung Fu a smart and sizzling mo ie with lots of soul - and punch ups. For more reviews please visit my website moviereviewssite.com

Home Sales Decline in 2022 After a Record 2021

Vancouver, BC: The British Columbia Real Estate Association (BCREA) reports that 80,874 residential unit sales were recorded by the Multiple Listing Service® (MLS®) in 2022, a 35.2 per cent decline from a record 124,788 units sold in 2021. The annual average MLS® residential price in BC was $996,878, a 7.5 per cent increase from $927,513 recorded the previous year. Total sales dollar volume was $80.6 billion, a 30.3 per cent decline from 2021.

“2022 could not match last year’s record pace,” said Brendon Ogmundson, Chief Economist. “While strong momentum from the end of 2021 carried through to the first quarter of the year, the pace and degree of Bank of Canada interest rate tightening ultimately precipitated a dramatic shift in the provincial housing market.”

A total of 3,490 residential unit sales were

recorded by the Multiple Listing Service® (MLS®) in December 2022, a decrease of 49.4 per cent from December 2021. The average MLS® residential price in BC was $911,753 an 11.5 per cent decrease from $1.03 million recorded in December 2021. Total sales dollar volume was $3.2 billion, a 55.2 per cent decline from the same time last year.

A Moroccan proverb claims, “If a man leaves little children behind him, it is as if he did not die.” A Sanskrit saying translates as, “A house without children is only a cemetery.”

Having children may be central to sustained human life. But over the past several years, there has been a crescendo of voices arguing for restraint. The most fervent views are expressed by women concerned about climate change.

We know some couples decide on a childless marriage in exchange for personal freedom. Others worry about the risk of a difficult child or the effect of a child on an unhappy marriage. And there are other reasons people opt out of parenthood. As Napoleon Bonaparte concluded while in exile on the island of St. Helena, “Children are always ungrateful.”

The BirthStrike Movement is an activist group choosing to forgo having children to protect them from worsening social, economic, and environmental conditions. They may be right that deciding not to have children is possibly one of the most effective way individuals can cut their own carbon emissions. According to analysts at Morgan Stanley, “Having a child is 7-times worse for the climate in CO2 emissions annually than the next 10 most discussed mitigants that individuals can do.”

There does seem to be a trend among Millennials away from having children. But aside from the activists, do young people have a generalized concern about the consequences of climate change, enough to change the urge for children? Or has something else happened?

It is undoubtedly a great injustice to subject innocent children to the hazards of a polluted, poisonous planet. Can you blame would-be parents for opting out when scientists raise alarms that their children will encounter more floods, droughts, fires, tornadoes, and famine, fight wars over water, land and other resources, and that economic crises will lead to social chaos?

There are other considerations that affect fertility rates. For instance, having a child can send a woman’s career into the abyss. A study from the University of Massachusetts examining data from 1979 to 2006 found that, on average, men earn 6 percent more when they had children (and lived with them), while women earn 4 percent less for every child. More recent studies show the same. In 2019, a study using data from the US census found mothers earned 71 cents for every dollar earned by fathers. Women have a justified right to complain. Friendships can also take a hit. A survey of 1,000 parents revealed almost half of moms and dads had fewer friends after children were born. In addition, there was less marital satisfaction.

CivicScience, a polling platform, adds another depressing note. They analyzed one million responses and concluded that nonparents lead healthier lifestyles, sleep longer, exercise more, drink less coffee, smoke less, avoid fast food restaurants, and were less overweight.

But what about the health benefits of parenthood. There is good news for women, including decreased risk of breast and ovarian cancer. Breastfeeding lowers the chance of type 2 diabetes. And a University of California study reports that for children born to mothers over age 25, there’s an 11 percent greater chance of living to 90. Finally, does having children mean parents are happier and less lonely later in life? Re-

searchers in Germany found that parents tend to be happier than non-parents in old age, but this only holds if their kids have moved out! Older people without children get similar rewards to those having children, it seems, by maintaining any close social connections that share their issues and concerns.
