FRASER Health told The VOICE on Thursday that they are “checking to see what happened” in the case of a pregnant South Asian woman who delivered her baby on the Surrey Memorial Hospital lobby floor after having been sent away three times from the hospital last month. CityNews Vancouver reported on Wednesday that when Pawandeep Samra went to the hospital in pain for the first time on December 25, she was monitored for about two hours and then sent home. She was accompanied by her husband, Gagandeep Singh Bandhan. However, the couple returned to the hospital as Pawandeep was in severe pain. She was given a pain killer, made to wait for two to three hours and then sent home again. The couple went to the hospital a third time. Then, on their fourth visit, Samra’s water broke during the car ride to the hospital. Pawandeep got out of the car near the birth unit lobby where, as she told CityNews Vancouver, she “bent over … holding my baby right there.” She said she asked a South Asian female security guard there to call some doctor or nurse because she had already delivered her baby. The security guard brought a wheelchair for her. Then the staff got a stretcher. Pawandeep said that both she and the staff were freaked out.

Fraser Health in a statement to The VOICE said: “We are sorry to hear about this person’s experience at Surrey Memorial Hospital. We are committed to providing safe and timely patient care to each person who presents to one of our hospitals. “In addition to checking to see what happened in this case, we will connect directly with the patient to hear their concerns, and to hear how they and their infant are doing. “We appreciate the patient coming forward to share their experience so we can follow-up with them and apply any learnings that may support an improved patient experience.” Fraser Health added: “While each

case is unique, in general, when a pregnant person presents to the hospital in labour, they are first assessed by a nurse with expertise in taking care of pregnant individuals and are then assessed by an obstetrical care provider. If they are clinically assessed to be in early labour, they may be asked to return home so they can rest and have access to their own home comforts. They are provided with clear instructions on when to return as their labour symptoms progress. “On rare occasions, the labour and delivery process may escalate quickly, and with little warning. When this occurs, our priority is to assess the individual and their baby as soon as possible to ensure their health and well-being.”

BC Liberal leadership hopeful Kevin Falcon lashed out against party members who were reportedly singling out South Asians to “prove their membership adequacy” as his rival leadership candidates seemed to gang up on him. Falcon is considered the front runner and has been constantly under attack by the BC NDP. On Tuesday, Falcon tweeted: “Since launching my campaign, I’ve argued our Party needs a ‘root to branch’ rebuild to ensure we reflect the diversity of our

communities. More diversity in key positions ensures systemic disenfranchisement will never happen again. “In this day and age, it is completely unacceptable for a party to single out members of racialized communities for their involvement in politics. “I’ve dedicated over 20 years of my life proudly working in the Asian/South Asian communities and will not tolerate those members

ON Tuesday, the NDP MLA Niki Sharma said that serious allegations of voter fraud involving the BC Liberal leadership campaign should be investigated independently. She noted that according to multiple media reports, five of seven leaderships campaigns have sent a joint letter to the BC Liberals’ Leadership Organizing Committee alleging membership irregularities. “We are collectively concerned about the potential for voter fraud, the current audit process, and the

risk of catastrophic reputational damage to the party, party staff, LEOC, the executive and all of us if this race is perceived as anything less than free and fair,” the letter reportedly said. The most serious allegations say that names of newly signed members are attached to addresses of businesses, not residences, including a forest service road. Campaign managers for Ellis Ross, Michael Lee, Renee Merrifield, Gavin Dew and Stan Sipos signed the letter to the committee. Leadership front runner Kevin Falcon and Val Litwin did not sign the letter. Sharma said this wasn’t the first time accusations of improper tactics had been made against a BC

Liberal Leadership campaign. According to a Glacier Media investigation in April 2021, Falcon’s 2011 leadership campaign was accused of using addictions patients at a facility near Prince George as campaign workers. That same clinic received funding from the BC government while he served as health minister. Sharma said: “It is deeply troubling that five of the seven leadership candidates are making such serious allegations. This casts a shadow on the entire leadership campaign and the democratic process. I urge the BC Liberal Party to take these allegations seriously and send the allegations to a credible third party so they can be subject to an independent investigation.”

Huge victory for police accountability as BCCLA wins lawsuit against RCMP Commissioner

communities we hope to serve. If we do that, we’ll win back seats in Surrey, Vancouver, Richmond, Burnaby, and every other region where we lost to the NDP!”

THE BC Civil Liberties Association (BCCLA) on Tuesday won a landmark court case about police accountability. The BCCLA brought this lawsuit to address the RCMP Commissioner’s extreme delays in responding to public complaints. In 2014, the BCCLA filed a complaint against the RCMP for spying on Indigenous and climate advocates opposed to the Northern Gateway pipeline. The complaint was filed with the Civilian Review and Complaints Commission (CRCC) – the RCMP watchdog. Due to the RCMP Commissioner’s extreme delay in the complaints process, the CRCC was only able to release its report nearly seven years after the complaint was filed. In court, the BCCLA argued that systemic delays have plagued the RCMP complaints process for over a decade and it is time to hold the RCMP Commissioner to account.

RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki The Federal Court of Canada agreed. In a decision released on Tuesday, the Court held that the RCMP Commissioner breached her statutory obligations by failing to respond to a CRCC report about the BCCLA’s

complaint “as soon as feasible,” as she is required to do by s. 45.76(2) of the RCMP Act. The Court held that the RCMP Commissioner must respond to CRCC reports within six months, absent exceptional circumstances. Associate Chief Justice Jocelyne Gagné highlighted that “it is in the public interest to have a police oversight institution that functions properly and is unobstructed.” She noted that the BCCLA had “explained the important consequences of these delays on the public’s ability to obtain information about police misconduct and to remedy policies that can cause harm to the public.” Paul Champ, legal counsel for the BCCLA, said: “Today’s decision is a huge victory for police accountability and for communities from coast to coast who have been calling for justice. For the first time, a court has

made clear that the RCMP Commissioner must respond to CRCC reports expeditiously and it has placed a hard time limit on how quickly she must respond. We hope this decision brings an end to the RCMP’s longstanding culture of complacency.” Jessica Magonet, legal counsel for the BCCLA, added: “Communities have been demanding an end to the abuse of police power. We believe today’s decision is a step in the right direction. The Federal Court decision shows that the RCMP Commissioner cannot continue to thwart the complaints process by sitting on reports for years on end. When it comes to police accountability, justice delayed is justice denied.” The BCCLA was represented in this case by Paul Champ of Champ and Associates and Jessica Magonet of the BCCLA.

Indian national Sapna Kapoor sentenced to jail for attempting passport fraud and making false statement to passport officer SAPNA Kapoor, 44, an Indian national, has been sentenced to sentence to a jail term of six months less a day, or 179 days, followed by a three-year probation order by BC Supreme Court Justice Murray Blok for attempting to utter a forged passport application, and making a false statement to a passport oficer. Kapoor was convicted by a jury on January 8, 2021, on these two counts. According to the ruling that was recently released, at the time of these offences, Kapoor had very recently separated from her husband, Sonam Makkar. The relationship was very brief as there were just 16 months between the date of the marriage and the date of separation. They had a son, who was born in June 2017. The marriage was dificult and fractious.

She wanted a passport for her child to take him to India after separating from her husband. They separated in early September 2017 in highly acrimonious circumstances. According to the oral reasons given by the judge, the evidence shows Kapoor attended at a passport ofice in Surrey on September 27, 2017, and presented a passport application for their infant son. That application bore a purported signature of the child’s father. The matter had been lagged

by an alert system that Makkar had initiated with Passport Canada, and so the application was not processed in the end. The verdict of the jury necessarily means that they were satisied that Kapoor attempted to cause the Passport Program to use a passport application; the application was forged; Kapoor knew it was forged; and she presented the application with the intent that the application

be used or acted upon as if it were genuine. The second offence was committed a few days later. The lagged passport application caused passport oficials to make further inquiries. A passport oficer performed a parental veriication check by phoning Kapoor, who told the oficer that Makkar was not available, that he had left the country, but he had signed the passport application. That statement was false. The judge pointed out in the ruling that the verdict of the jury establishes that Kapoor made an oral statement to a passport oficer that Makkar signed the application; Kapoor made the statement for the purpose of procuring a passport for

Warrant issued for arrest of man who defaced Vancouver’s Komagata Maru memorial

A four-month Vancouver Police investigation has resulted in charges against a man who allegedly defaced Vancouver’s Komagata Maru memorial in Coal Harbour last summer. “This crime reverberated throughout the community because of what this memorial reveals about our past and the steps we have taken to become a more inclusive community,” said Sgt. Steve Addison on Wednesday. “We promised to do everything in our power to solve this crime, and we’re pleased that evidence has led us to a criminal charge.” Vancouver Police launched an investigation on August 22, after people began posting pictures on

social media showing white paint, hand prints, and grafiti plastered on the memorial, which includes the names of nearly 400 people who sailed to Vancouver from India aboard the Komagata Maru in 1914, but were denied entry due to racist policies at the time. Although the vandalism at the memorial was not initially reported to police, a team of investigators was able to gather important evidence from the scene and identify a suspect after people began discussing the crime on social media. On Monday, BC Prosecution Service approved one count of mischief against 39-year-old Yuniar Kurniawan. A BC-wide warrant has been issued for his arrest.

‘Only actual jail time would meet the sentencing objective of specific deterrence’: Judge CONTINUED FROM 3 their son; the statement was false; and Ka‑ poor knew it was false. THE ruling noted that. Makkar provided a vic‑ tim impact statement. To summarize it very briefly, Makkar said he has lived in constant fear that Kapoor might try to abduct their child back to India, a country which is not a signatory to the Hague Convention. He noted Kapoor has shown little respect for Canadian courts and Canadian laws, including violating her release conditions, and she has conduct‑ ed herself in many other unscrupulous ways that have heightened his concern that she will abduct their child. The judge said Kapoor is 44 years old. She was born in India and is an Indian national. She is well educated, having earned a mas‑ ter’s degree in business administration, and from about 2013 to perhaps 2017 or 2018, she worked with an international business consulting firm as a software consultant. In

the latter part of that employment, she was located in the United States. Her counsel informed the court that Kapoor is currently not working. She is said to be car‑ ing for her sick father. Counsel said these proceedings have im‑ pacted Kapoor greatly as she has lost her job and lost her immigration status. Counsel also said that Kapoor suffers from depression and anxiety. THE ruling noted that Kapoor is unremorse‑ ful, which was not an aggravating factor, but this, together with her other attributes, led the judge to conclude that she is unlikely to comply with the conditions of a Conditional Sentence Order. The judge said that the fact that she was non‑compliant, defiant, and at times essentially ungovernable during the trial reinforces this view. He added that she seems to have no insight into her criminal behaviour and she does not acknowledge what she has done or the harm she has done, and instead she blames oth‑

ers, particularly Makkar. She claims to have acted out of motherly love and that there was no risk of child abduction, but she has failed to recognize that her conduct reason‑ ably gave rise to those very fears, according to the ruling. The judge said that in these circumstances, he concludes that only actual jail time would meet the sentencing objective of specific de‑ terrence. He said that Kapoor may already have done irreparable damage to her future immigra‑ tion status, but he is satisfied he can impose a sentence that meets all sentencing objec‑ tives here without creating potential immi‑ gration consequences. Accordingly, Kapoor was sentenced to a jail term of six months less a day, or 179 days, fol‑ lowed by a three‑year probation order. The sentences will be the same for each count and they will be concurrent as the offences are essentially part of the same of‑ fending, the judge noted. The conditions of the probation order include

that she will remain in British Columbia un‑ less she has the written permission of her probation officer; she is not to remove, or per‑ mit any other person to remove her son from British Columbia or Canada; she is not to take the child in a vehicle or permit any other per‑ son to take the child in a vehicle more than 50 kilometres from her residence; and she is not to attend within a two‑kilometre radius of the Vancouver International Airport or within 100 metres of the Canada‑U.S. border when the child is in her custody or care. Also, she has to deposit her passport to her probation officer within 48 hours after the commencement of probation. The passport shall remain in the custody of the probation officer, except for authorized travel, and will be provided 48 hours prior to departure upon confirmation that the child is with his father. She must return your passport to the proba‑ tion officer within 24 hours of returning to Canada. She will not have custody or care of the child during any periods that she is in possession of her passport.

Prime Minister Trudeau and Premier Horgan on National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Air Disasters

“In 1985, 280 Canadians lost their lives in the terrorist bombing of Air India Flight 182” PRIME Minister Justin Trudeau on Saturday issued the following statement on the National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Air Disasters: “Today, on the second National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Air Disasters, I join Canadians in paying tribute to those who lost their lives to aviation disasters, both at home and abroad. We stand in solidarity with their families and loved ones who continue to live with a profound sense of loss and suffering. “Canada has been scarred by the devastating toll of aviation tragedies. Two years ago today, Iran shot down Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 (PS752), tragically taking the lives of all 176 innocent people on board, including 55 Canadian citizens, 30 permanent residents, and many others with ties to Canada. The year before, Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 (ET302) crashed on its way to Nairobi, Kenya, claiming the lives of 157 people, including 18 Canadians and many others with ties to Canada. In 1985, 280 Canadians lost their lives in the terrorist bombing of Air India Flight 182. “Recognizing the pain and hardship that air disasters bring, the Government of Canada continues to work with its international partners to improve the safety of aviation around the world. This includes our ongoing work to advance the Safer Skies Initiative, which brings together countries,

Justin Trudeau Photo: Twitter international organizations, and industry partners to increase aviation security over conflict zones through best practices and information sharing, the review of global standards, and open dialogue. “The government places the victims’ families and loved ones – those who matter the most – at the heart of its response, and is committed to ensuring they are supported. That is why we continue to consult with them on meaningful commemoration initiatives. We have launched a public consultation on a physical tribute to remember those who have lost their lives in air disasters. We are also working with our partners at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to help enhance air accident investigations. To date, Canada has secured the support of 55 ICAO member states to review the investigation frame-

work in order to make it more credible, transparent, and impartial. We will continue to work with our international partners to hold Iran accountable for the illegal downing of PS752. We will keep taking meaningful steps to bring transparency, accountability, and justice for the victims of air travel tragedies and their families. “Today, I invite Canadians to join me in remembering all victims of air travel tragedies and to keep them in our thoughts and hearts. Canada will continue to work with partners across the country and around the world to improve the safety and security of air travel for everyone and help prevent these tragedies from ever happening again.”

Escaped inmate Mustafa Sa’Ada back in custody SURREY RCMP announced on Friday that Mustafa Sa’Ada, the Surrey Pretrial Services Centre inmate who fled on Thursday, has

been located and arrested. Sa’Ada was located by Vancouver Police Department on Thursday and taken into cus-

PREMIER John Horgan in his statement said: “On the second National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Air Disasters, we take time to reflect on the lives lost in these tragedies. “Today marks two years since the shooting down of Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 by Iranian civil and military officials. All 176 people on board were killed, including 138 with ties to Canada, among them Canadian citizens and permanent residents. Several of the victims were from British Columbia and were active members of their community. Their positive contributions to Canada will be a lasting legacy, and we join their families and friends in mourning their loss on this sad day.

From this disaster has risen an Iranian community in British Columbia that is more resilient than ever. I encourage all British Columbians to join the Association of Families of Flight PS752 Victims in using the hashtag #IWillLightACandleToo to keep the memory of the passengers alive. B.C. is also a diverse and multilingual province, and our government recognizes the need to ensure that all residents can access support and services in the language they are the most comfortable using,” said Mable Elmore, Parliamentary Secretary for Seniors’ Services and Long-Term Care. “That is why in July we translated the guide into six languages, and now, we are adding translations in Tagalog and Hindi for the approximately 15,270 B.C. seniors who speak these languages.” The new seniors’ guide includes information on programs, such as: * Fair PharmaCare; * Medical Services Plan; * the Home Adaptations for Independence program, which provides financial assistance for low-income seniors to modify their homes; * Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters, which helps make rents affordable for low- to moderate-income seniors; * the B.C. Senior’s Supplement, which offers a provincial top-up to the federal Old Age Security/ Guaranteed Income Supplement payment; * the Travel Assistance Program, which offers discounts for travel within the province for medical specialists’ services not available in local communities; and * the B.C. Bus Pass program, which offers subsidized bus passes to low-income seniors. The 12th edition includes sections on digital literacy, cultural safety, 2SLGBTQ+ supports and medical assistance in dying. The guide directs individuals to the BC Centre for Disease Control for information regarding COVID-19. “British Columbia is one of the most diverse, multicultural and multilingual provinces in Canada, and the senior population reflects that diversity. It’s crucial people have the information they need in a language they understand so as to make the best choices as they age and remain active and engaged in their communities,” said Isobel Mackenzie, Seniors Advocate. More Canadians may be driving high since cannabis legalization: UBC study THC is being detected in twice as many injured drivers since cannabis was legalized in Canada, according to new UBC research published on Thursday in the New England Journal of Medicine. The findings may be a signal that more Canadians are choosing to drive after using cannabis. “It’s concerning that we’re seeing such a dramatic increase,” said Dr. Jeffrey Brubacher, associate professor in UBC’s department of emergency medicine and the principal investigator of the study. “There are serious risks associated with driving after cannabis use. Our findings suggest more is needed to deter this dangerous behaviour in light of legalization.” Brubacher and colleagues analyzed blood samples from 4,339 moderately injured drivers who were treated at four B.C. trauma centres between 2013 and 2020. Before cannabis was legalized, 3.8 per cent of drivers had blood THC concentrations above the Canadian legal driving limit of 2 nanograms/ml. That percentage rose to 8.6 per cent after legalization. The proportion of drivers with higher concentrations of THC (above 5 nanograms/ml) also increased, going from 1.1 per cent pre-legalization to 3.5 per cent afterwards. The largest increase was among drivers over the age of 50. There were no significant changes in drivers testing positive for alcohol, either alone or in combination with THC. When cannabis was legalized in October 2018, the federal government amended the Criminal Code, giving police more powers to test drivers for drugs if they reasonably suspect the person to have drugs in their body or to have committed a drug-impaired driving offence. Many provinces followed suit by introducing new penalties, such as fines and driver license suspension, to deter cannabisimpaired driving. “The evidence shows that these new laws are not enough to stop everyone from driving after using cannabis,” said Brubacher. “We hope that policymakers will use our findings to design public information campaigns and enforcement measures that encourage drivers, especially older drivers, to separate cannabis use from driving. At the same time, it is important not to lose sight of alcohol im-

paired driving, which is extremely high risk, especially when combined with cannabis.” Blood THC levels typically peak at upwards of 100 nanograms/ml within 15 minutes of smoking cannabis. Those levels then drop rapidly to less than 2 nanograms/ml within four hours after smoking. After ingesting edible forms of THC, the levels drop to a similarly low concentration after eight hours. While cannabis use is associated with cognitive deficits and psychomotor impairment, Brubacher cautions that the presence of THC in the blood is not always an indicator that a collision was caused by cannabis impairment. In a previous study, Dr. Brubacher and his research team showed there is little evidence that THC concentrations below 5 nanograms/ ml increase the risk of motor vehicle accidents. However, there is evidence that higher THC levels—above 5 nanograms/ml—do increase the risk. “Detecting cannabis, especially at low concentrations, doesn’t necessarily mean a driver is impaired,” said Brubacher, also a researcher with the Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute, an emergency physician with Vancouver General Hospital and director of the hospital’s emergency medicine research division. “But the risk is real with higher THC levels, which is why it’s so important that we continue to assess and respond to the impact that legalization is having on road safety.” Dr. Brubacher’s team is now expanding their research to 15 trauma centres across Canada, investigating the prevalence of cannabis, alcohol and other impairing substances in injured drivers. They hope those results will shed more light on the issue and help guide national and provincial traffic policy.

Applications open for COVID-19 Closure Relief Grants BUSINESSES can now apply for the COVID-19 Closure Relief Grant, a new program the Province has fast-tracked to support B.C. businesses ordered to temporarily close their doors due to recent public-health measures. “This is not the way any of us wanted to start the new year with more strain on our businesses, families and communities,” said Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation, on Wednesday. “Our government will be there to help hard-hit businesses that have had to shut down and get them some necessary support to help pay their bills. We can get through this together as quickly as possible by going back to the basics – bringing back our COVID-19 safety plans for all businesses, recommitting to our daily health checks and continuing to follow all public-health measures.” Businesses that were ordered to fully close on December 22, 2021, including bars, nightclubs and lounges that do not serve full meals, gyms, fitness and adult dance centres and event venues that can no longer hold events, can apply for relief grants of between $1,000 and $10,000. Funds from the program, which is expected to support more than 3,000 businesses, can help with expenses such as

Ravi Kahlon rent, employee wages, insurance, maintenance and utilities. “There is no denying these are extremely challenging times for our industry,” said Sara Hodson, President, Fitness Industry Council of Canada. “Supports like the COVID-19 Closure Relief Grant are very welcome at this time as many B.C. business owners need all of the financial supports available to us. The fitness and health industry has been committed to doing everything we can to keep people healthy and safe throughout this pandemic. We look forward to reopening and being able to once again provide the essential physical and health benefits of exercise to all British Columbians.” The total grant amount per business will be based on the number of employees and follows a for-

mula similar to the previous Circuit Breaker Business Relief Grant that supported businesses in the spring of 2021. To apply for a grant, visit: www. gov.bc.ca/business-relief This $10-million provincial program complements existing federal government programs, including the recently expanded Local Lockdown Program and the Canada Worker Lockdown Benefit. The Local Lockdown Program provides wage and commercial rent support for businesses and other organizations, regardless of their sector, that have been affected by regional provincial health officer orders. This program is a way businesses, charities and non-profit organizations can be eligible for up to 75% of wage and rent support. The Canada Worker Lockdown Benefit provides $300 a week in income support to eligible workers who are directly affected by a COVID-19-related public health order and who have lost 50% or more of their income. “B.C. businesses have remained resilient throughout the pandemic and have adapted in more ways than one to keep people safe and healthy,” Kahlon said. “I continue to urge everyone to support local businesses where you can, and know that our business community needs us, as we need it. Let’s

work together, and we will get through this once again.” On January 7, B.C.’s public health officer ordered all businesses to reactivate their COVID-19 safety plans to help keep employees and communities safe during the rapid spread of cases related to the COVID-19 Omicron variant. Learn More: For more information on the COVID-19 Closure Relief Grant, including the application process and eligibility, visit: www.gov.bc.ca/ business-relief For more useful links, visit our website voiceonline.com BACKGROUNDER Business relief grant eligibility criteria, pay structure To be eligible for the COVID-19 Closure Relief Grant, a business is required to: * confirm it has been fully closed by the provincial health officer’s recent orders; * confirm that it was registered with BC Registries before November 1, 2021; * produce up-to-date business validation documents (2020 or newer), such as a municipal business licence, liquor and/or food primary licence, notice of assessment, insurance policy, statement

of business registration or lease agreement; * confirm majority ownership and operations and payment of taxes in B.C.; and * confirm that the business has been following and will continue to follow all public-health orders and guidelines. Businesses that offer online rentals or online services, but their physical location is fully closed, are eligible to apply. New applicants will need to provide direct-deposit information. This will not be needed if the business was approved for the Circuit Breaker Business Relief or the Small- and Medium-Sized Business Recovery grants, and banking information is the same. Eligible businesses that closed as a result of the provincial health officer orders will receive funding based on number of staff at the time of closure. The breakdown is as follows: * Businesses with no employees or contracted staff: $1,000 * One to four employees or contracted staff: $2,000 * Five to 99 employees or contracted staff: $5,000 * 100 or more employees or contracted staff: $10,000. Applications will be accepted from January 12, 2022, at 10 a.m. (Pacific time) to February 28, 2022.

Province seeks input on proposed asbestos licensing rules BRITISH Columbians are invited to provide feedback on proposed health and safety requirements for contractors, employers and workers who undertake asbestos abatement work. Asbestos-related diseases are the leading cause of workplace deaths in B.C. and workers and others continue to be exposed to this extremely hazardous substance. To improve workplace health and safety, the provincial government is proposing new standards

under the Workers Compensation Act that would require: * asbestos abatement contractors to be licensed by WorkSafeBC to operate in B.C.; and * employers, workers and contractors who perform asbestos abatement work be certified through a mandatory safety training process that would be authorized by WorkSafeBC. The proposed amendments would help

strengthen the existing regulatory requirements for asbestos abatement work. All abatement contractors would need to be licensed to operate in B.C. and their workers would have to complete training in the safe handling of asbestos. All contractors in good standing would be listed on a publicly accessible registry so that building owners can ensure they are hiring a qualified company with trained workers. The proposed amendments would also

strengthen WorkSafeBC’s enforcement tools and grant the authority to deny, cancel or suspend licences of non-compliant contractors. Government would like to hear from a broad range of British Columbians, including workers, employers, contractors, building and homeowners, and the general public. The consultation will be open from Tuesday, January 11, to Friday, February 11. For the link to participate, visit our website voiceonline.com.

BCFED calls on government to move quickly on asbestos abatement reform THE BC Federation of Labour in a statement on Thursday regarding the launch of provincial consultations on asbestos abatement licensing and training said that British Columbia’s unions are gratified to see the provincial government moving closer to acting on regulating asbestos abatement to protect workers and the public. It added: “We hope this stage can be concluded expeditiously. The provincial gov-

ernment reviewed this issue thoroughly in a consultative process in which unions, industry and other stakeholders participated. That process concluded in 2018 with a report titled “Keeping Workers, the Public and the Environment Safe From Asbestos,” followed by an additional two-month consultation period.” The BC Federation of Labour said that the report set out a clear agenda for action, including:

* licensing asbestos-removal companies, to address the persistent presence of bad actors in the industry; * setting training standards for asbestosremoval workers, so they have the knowhow to do their jobs safely and recognize dangerous conditions; and * mandating better asbestos disposal methods, so we’re all better protected from this lethal toxic substance. It added: “We hope the provincial govern-

ment can find whatever additional information it needs quickly, and we encourage workers across BC to add their voices. Asbestos remains the single leading cause of workplace-related death in British Columbia; preliminary numbers show that 51 workers died from asbestos-related causes in 2021 alone. Every day that goes by without action risks adding to that toll. We ask the government to act on the recommendations in the report without further delay.”

IHIT confirms Langley homicide victim was Julian Cardenas THE Integrated Homicide Investigation Team on Saturday confirmed The VOICE’s report (on our website voiceonline.com) that Friday’s homicide victim in Langley was Julian Moya Cardenas, 18, of Langley, who is known to police. Police believe that this shooting was targeted. Homicide investigators are looking to speak with anyone who knew of Moya Cardenas’ activities and associates. On January 7, at around 1:30 p.m., Langley RCMP responded to the intersection of 202 Street and 88 Avenue in the Walnut Grove area for multiple calls of assistance. First responders arrived and found one person suffering from gunshot wounds. Paramedics attended to the victim, but he succumbed to his injuries. A bystander was hit during the shooting and was taken to a nearby hospital with non-lifethreatening injures. They have been identified but their name is not being released. B.C.’S civil forfeiture program is responding to disturbing crime trends by going after more tools and information linked to dangerous activities in the drug trade, the Province announced on Friday. “We need to ensure that our civil forfeiture program is working as well as it can, so when police advise us about how drug gangs and organized crime are changing the ways they do business in B.C., we are committed to taking necessary steps to keep pace,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General. “These latest regulatory changes build on the legislative updates we made in 2019 and will help reduce violent crime and other activities that pose clear risks to public safety.” In response to police-observed trends of tools being used by organized crime and drug traffickers to further violence and avoid law enforcement, two types of devices are being included in the list of equipment related to trafficking. Vehicles or other property containing these devices may be considered instruments of unlawful activity. The devices are: * Radio jammers: Criminals use these devices, which are illegal under the federal Radiocommunication Act, to block the ability of police using GPS to monitor them and to block radio communication by authorities. * Aftermarket GPS trackers: Police found that a growing number of traffickers use these devices to track rivals they are targeting with violence or to keep tabs on subordinates, vehicles and high-value contraband items such as guns and drugs. “Any device that interferes with communication among front-line officers, or that supports gang members in targeting their rivals with violence, has no place in the hands of criminals,” said Fiona Wilson, deputy chief of the investigation division, Vancouver Police Department. “Any additional measures that deter criminal use of these devices is welcome as we and other police agencies work to curb profit-driven violence in the drug trade and by organized crime.” As well, the Civil Forfeiture Office (CFO) is clarifying the legal definition of “likely to cause serious bodily harm.” This will help ensure greater consistency in the court’s understanding and application of this term. In turn, it will create a clearer path to achieving forfeiture of property used in ways that have posed a significant risk of harm to others. The CFO is also formalizing its ability to secure specific information from more public bodies, which can strengthen cases against money laundering and gang activity. Public bodies added to the prescribed list in the regulation include the BC Securities Commission, the Motor Dealer Council, the BC Lottery Corporation, BC Hydro and BC Assessment. While the office has existing, individual information-sharing agreements with some of these bodies, prescribing them in regulation will enhance openness and transparency, and facilitate consistent agreements across multiple agencies. The regulatory changes to the civil forfeiture program are effective immediately.

Convicted murderer Cory Vallee loses appeal in 2009 murder of Kevin LeClair THE B.C. Court of Appeal on Thursday dismissed convicted killer Cory Vallee’s appeal to his conviction of first-degree murder of victim Kevin LeClair. The Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit – British Columbia (CFSEU-BC) said in a statement that in the early 2000’s, areas of British Columbia, especially the Lower Mainland, were subject to an unprecedented level of brazen public violence stemming from an ongoing conflict between rival gangs. The extreme acts of violence left the public and their communities in a heightened state of concern for their personal safety while victims succumbed to these heinous acts of violence, leaving family, friends and loved ones to grieve their losses. In February 2009, during the height of the 2008 and 2009 gang conflict between the United Nations and Red Scorpions gangs, LeClair was murdered outside a strip mall in

Cory Vallee Langley. In the time since that murder the investigation has aggressively continued, with several people being arrested, charged, and convicted for connected and peripheral investigations. In June 2018, after earlier being returned to Canada from Mexico

Conor D’Monte where he was hiding, Vallee was convicted in B.C. Supreme court for conspiracy to commit murder and the first-degree murder of Kevin LeClair. The investigation into the murder of LeClair remains active and ongoing with the final person alleged to have

participated being Conor D’Monte, who is wanted for murder. The hunt for international fugitive D’Monte continues. The CFSEU-BC said it is committed to the search for D’Monte and to hold him accountable for his role in the murder of LeClair. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact their local police. The BOLO program has conducted numerous media and public appeals for the arrest of D’Monte and information can be found here. “CFSEU-BC is dedicated to working with IHIT and other law enforcement partners to pursue evidence tied to violent gang-related conflicts regardless of whether that violence happened last week or over a decade ago. bec Premier Francois Legault for “taking the unprecedented step of taxing Quebecers based on their personal medical choices,” noting that “he is proposing a direct penalty for being unvaccinated – compelling individuals to undergo medical treatment.” Zwibel added: “Our Charter recognizes individual autonomy over our bodies and medical decisions. Allowing the government to levy fines on those who do not agree with the government’s recommended medical treatment is a deeply troubling proposition. To justify this kind of restriction on constitutionally protected rights, the government must provide clear and compelling

evidence and demonstrate that there were no other reasonable alternatives. “Quebec’s proposal also raises significant equity concerns. We have universal, public health care in Canada. We do not fine individuals who make poor diet and exercise choices, those who choose higher risk occupations or recreational activi-

ties. Some essential services – like basic health care for those who are ill – transcend such individual choices. “This is a divisive measure that will end up punishing and alienating those who may be most in need of public health supports and services. “We know that some of those who remain unvaccinated are individuals who face serious barriers to accessing health care, and many have a low level of trust in the system because of negative experiences in the past. “The government should abandon this divisive and constitutionally vulnerable proposal.”

Floods, fires, extreme heat and pandemic didn’t deter nuisance calls to 9-1-1 NUISANCE calls to 9-1-1 continued to divert the precious time of B.C.’s emergency call takers during E-Comm’s busiest year in its 22-year history. The company said in a news release that it received more than 1.9 million 9-1-1 calls in 2021, with many of the busiest days for 9-1-1 in E-Comm’s existence having occurred last year. Despite three provincial states of emergency, the ongoing pandemic and high demand for police, fire and ambulance services, EComm call takers continued to field non-urgent calls on 9-1-1 lines. Familiar consumer complaints and general questions about COVID-19 put a strain on emergency calltaking as E-Comm dealt with record-setting influxes of calls from people experiencing real life or death emergencies. “Our staff worked tirelessly throughout the heat dome, wildfires and flooding emergencies to support our first responder partners and get help to those who needed it as quickly as possible. It was disheartening to learn that we continued to receive 9-1-1

Call taker at E-Comm’s Lower Mainland Emergency Communications Centre. calls from people looking for information or trying to make general service complaints when so many communities were experiencing critical emergency situations,” says Jasmine Bradley, E-Comm’s executive director of communications. “Our call takers are trained to treat every call that comes through as an emergency, until they can determine otherwise. Every second that they spend speaking with someone who is upset about a mixed up

coffee order or wanting to report a messy roommate, is time they could have been helping someone in a life-threatening situation.” E-Comm, which handles 99 per cent of B.C.’s 9-1-1 call volume at its two emergency communications centres, has once again released its annual top 10 list of calls that don’t belong on 9-1-1. Despite ongoing efforts to draw the public’s attention to the appropriate resources to contact for consumer complaints, general information, directions or to check the time, many of the calls found on the 2021 list are repeat offenders. By sharing this list, E-Comm hopes to remind people that every time someone calls 9-1-1 about a non-urgent matter, they put the lives of other British Columbians at risk. Top ten nuisance calls of 2021 1. The barista mixed up their coffee order 2. A pedestrian was splashed on the sidewalk 3. Requesting a COVID test 4. Enquiring about becoming a 9-1-1 call

taker 5. Wanting to know where they could vote during the federal election 6. Looking for weather updates 7. Asking for directions 8. Wondering why the bus wasn’t coming 9. Enquiring about COVID restrictions 10. Reporting a messy roommate “At a time when demand for emergency services is higher than it ever has been, it is extremely concerning that people continue to misuse 9-1-1 lines,” explains Bradley. “91-1 is the first point of contact for someone experiencing a life-or-death emergency, it is critical these lines are free from non-urgent situations so our call takers can get people the help they need, as quickly as possible.” To help the public make the right call and keep 9-1-1 lines free for real emergencies, examples of emergency situations that should be reported through 9-1-1 and a comprehensive list of alternative resources that are more appropriate for non-police matters are available on E-Comm’s website.

Boosters available for pregnant women EFFECTIVE Thursday, January 13, women who are pregnant can book a COVID-19 booster vaccine if it has been at least eight weeks since they received their second vaccine dose, the Ministry of Health announced.

While it is recommended people get their booster six months after their second dose to ensure longer-lasting protection, it is important for pregnant people to receive their booster during pregnancy to ensure optimal protection for them and

their baby. People who indicate they are pregnant when they call the Get Vaccinated system will receive an invitation for a booster shot if it has been eight weeks or more since their second dose. Approximately 1,800

people have already stated that they are pregnant and will automatically receive an invitation. Those who have not registered with the Get Vaccinated system can register online, by phone or at a Service BC Centre.

Record number of new homes registered in B.C. NEW data released by BC Housing shows a record number of new homes registered in British Columbia in 2021. Registered new homes data is collected at the beginning of a project, before building permits are issued, making it a leading indicator of housing activity in B.C. “This report shows that we can meet the challenge to increase the supply of desperately needed rental homes for individuals, families and seniors in B.C., if cities partner with us to get building permits issued quickly for these registered units,” said David

David Eby Eby, Attorney General and Minister Responsible for Housing.

“The numbers show that together we can respond to the more than 25,000 new people who moved to British Columbia in the last three months looking for homes, and the thousands more who we know are still coming. We can only succeed in this major challenge if we have committed partners in cities, the federal government, non-profits, First Nations and the private sector to get these registered homes built and open.” The December 2021 New Homes Registry Report shows that 53,189 new homes were registered in B.C.

LOOKING FOR

MORTGAGE I WORK FOR YOU, NOT FOR LENDERS

in 2021, the highest yearly total since BC Housing started collecting this data in 2002. Compared to 2020, new home registrations increased by 67.5%. Among the new homes registered in 2021, 12,899 were purpose-built rentals, which is a rise of 47.7% over the previous year. From 2017-21, there were 51,616 new purpose-built rental homes registered, more than the combined total of the previous 15 years (2002-16). Under the Homeowner Protection Act, all new homes in the province are required to be registered with BC Housing. The registration must occur prior

to the issuance of building permits or prior to construction in geographical areas where building permits are not required. Quick Facts * The B.C. government is making the largest investment in housing in B.C.’s history – $7 billion over 10 years – and working with partners to deliver 114,000 affordable homes over 10 years. * Since 2017, the Province has funded more than 30,000 affordable new homes that have been completed or are underway for people in B.C.

B.C. paying the price for NDP’s broken affordability promises: BC Liberals THE BC Liberals say that B.C. continues to see skyrocketing prices for food, housing, and fuel in 2022, despite the NDP government’s repeated promises to make life more affordable. “This NDP government has twice campaigned on the promise of making life more affordable for British Columbians, and yet, after more than four years as government, the cost of living has increased by nearly every metric,” said Mike Bernier, BC Liberal

Critic for Finance, on Wednesday. “Food is more expensive, housing prices continue to climb, and gas prices are predicted to reach record highs — how is this the improved affordability that people were promised? The NDP has not just failed to improve cost of living, they’ve sat idly by as the problem has worsened, and patted themselves on the back for it.” The BC Liberals say that in 2021, B.C. experienced five straight

months of elevated inflation over 3 per cent, with the rising costs of housing, gasoline, and groceries headlining the increases. Throughout B.C., property values have risen by astronomical amounts in the last year, with some municipalities noting average increases of more than 40 per cent. Meanwhile, experts predict that gas prices in Metro Vancouver could soon reach a record new normal of $1.85 per litre.

“The people of B.C. have endured two of the most challenging years in recent memory, and as a result, they are desperately looking to the NDP to finally deliver on their promises to make life easier,” said Bernier. “However, it has become increasingly clear that this government is incapable of keeping the promises they made, not once, but twice and British Columbians are paying the price. At the end of the day, B.C. just can’t afford the NDP.”

NDP must provide guidance and support to child care operators: BC Liberals THE BC Liberals on Friday called on the government to provide policy guidance and safety measures to the early learning and childcare sector, which has been ignored by the NDP without any support and is struggling to navigate the Omicron surge. “This is just another example of the NDP making short-sighted decisions without consideration of the impacts. How can they discount the importance of the most vulnerable considering those under five years old aren’t eligible to be immunized?” said Karin Kirkpatrick, BC Liberal

ing access to vaccine boosters, rapid antigen tests, and N95 masks, in addition to appropriate communication and transparency of information about emerging variants. “Child care is an essential service but the NDP did not bother addressing their needs,” added Kirkpatrick. “Parents require child care so they can go to work — not if daycares aren’t safe. We must do everything we can to protect the health and well-being of our children and educators. It’s time for the NDP to do its part.” Karin Kirkpatrick

Critic for Children, Family Development and Childcare. “It’s unacceptable for the government to expect child care centres to remain open but is leaving operators to come up with their own plans to deal with the Omicron wave. I urge the NDP to implement recommendations laid out by Early Childhood Educators of BC (ECEBC) as soon as possible, as these hard-working caregivers and educators are disheartened and should have been consulted in the first place.” These recommendations include ensur-

Provincial state of emergency extended WITH some highways still damaged by flooding and mudslides, and the potential for further flooding this week, the Province announced on Tuesday that it is extending the provincial state of emergency. Given the continued need for public safety measures under the Emergency Program Act and ongoing work to repair damaged highways, the provincial state of emergency is being extended until the end of day, January 18. “My continued thanks go out to road crews who are working so hard to get our highways back and fully open,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General. “This work is essential in getting vital resources to the people of British Columbia, and once completed will allow for easier access to communities around the province. Thank

you to all British Columbians for your ongoing patience and compliance during these challenging times.” The orders restricting travel on highways 5 and 99 will remain in place. This includes: * Highway 5 (Coquihalla) between Hope and Merritt (only commercial vehicles with a minimum licensed gross vehicle weight of 11,794 kilograms and inter-city buses are permitted); and * from the junction of Highway 99 and Lillooet River Road to the BC Hydro Seton Lake campsite access in Lillooet (open to all traffic, but vehicles weighing more than 14,500 kilograms are not permitted). The state of emergency gives the Province the ability to use extraordinary powers to protect people and communities.

Violent incidents across Vancouver on weekend VANCOUVER Police are investigating a series of violent incidents that kept officers stretched to all corners of the city this weekend. “From the downtown core to the South Slope, and from East Van to the west side, VPD officers were called on to investigate multiple violent crimes,” said Sgt. Steve Addison on Monday. “These included commercial robberies, stranger assaults, road rages, and several stabbings. Downtown – A 55-year-old cab driver was injured and traumatized Friday night after a passenger allegedly assaulted him with a weapon, threatened him, and forced him to drive from Richmond to Downtown Vancouver. The cabbie was allegedly ordered to drive through red lights and veer into oncoming traffic by the passenger, who appeared paranoid and thought people were following him. VPD officers arrested the suspect after he allegedly got out of the cab and started threatening staff at London Drugs near Granville and Georgia Street. A 43-year-old man has been charged with assault with a weapon, uttering threats, and possession of a weapon. He is due back in court on Wednesday. – A West End man was injured after being allegedly attacked with a knife by a neighbour who refused to wear a mask inside the elevator of their West End apartment building. VPD received a number of 9-1-1 calls Saturday afternoon after an argument in the hallway of their Pendrell Street apart-

ment building turned violent. Police believe the 48-year-old victim had confronted the suspect in the elevator because he wasn’t wearing a mask. The 56-year-old suspect allegedly threatened and assaulted the victim, who did not suffer life-threatening injuries. The suspect has been charged with assault with a weapon and uttering threats. – VPD officers patrolling Granville Street found a 39-year-old man badly injured and bleeding heavily from a stab wound to the neck around 4:40 p.m. on Saturday. Investigators believe the man was stabbed inside an apartment building near Granville and Nelson Street, then walked outside before collapsing on the sidewalk. The victim was taken to hospital for surgery, and is now expected to survive. No arrests have been made and the incident remains under investigation. East Van – A 23-year-old fast food worker had to defend himself with a bread knife after a man smashed the front door, jumped the counter, grabbed him by the neck, then stole the cash register during a Saturday afternoon robbery on Powell Street. The victim, who was not seriously hurt, fled to a neighbouring business and asked a staff member to call 9-1-1. The suspect fled with the till before police arrived, however, investigators were able to track him to an apartment building near East Hastings Street and Campbell Avenue. He was arrested for robbery and is awaiting his first court appearance.

Did you lose cash in downtown New Westminster?

ON Monday, an upstanding citizen called police to report that he had found a notable amount of Canadian currency scattered on the sidewalk on Columbia Street in downtown New Westminster. Officers would like to return the funds to the rightful owner. “We’ve had success in the past in locating the owners of money found by good Samaritans,” said Sgt. Sanjay Kumar.

“We’re hoping to find whose money this is. If you were in the downtown area yesterday, and in possession of some cash, please check to ensure you haven’t lost it.” Police have thanked the honest citizen who came forward with the found money. If you lost money in the downtown area of New Westminster, file an online police report or call 604-525-5411.

– A man bleeding from the hand walked into International Village, near Abbott and Pender streets, and began kicking over signs, smearing blood on railings, and flicking blood at security guards on Saturday night. The man left the mall before police arrived, however, investigating officers reviewed security footage and recognized him from previous incidents. Kelvin Beddows was later arrested and has since been charged with mischief and assault. He remains in custody. – A chronic offender with 128 prior criminal convictions was arrested on Saturday near Stadium SkyTrain station and has been charged with robbery. VPD was called around 5:30 p.m. after a man, who was waiting inside his vehicle while his wife went grocery shopping, was approached by the suspect, who had a knife. The suspect allegedly climbed into the bed of the man’s truck, which was parked on Abbott Street, flashed the knife, and demanded money, then threatened to slash the driver’s tires. VPD officers arrested Jason Fish nearby. He is currently in custody. West Side – A man driving near Vancouver General Hospital on Saturday afternoon had to slam on his breaks to avoid hitting a pedestrian who had darted out in front of him. The pe-

destrian became enraged and started hitting the vehicle. She then punched the man repeatedly, broke his glasses, and sprayed an unknown substance in his face. The victim, a 36-year-old man from Marpole, called police, but the suspect fled before police arrived. The suspect is a Black woman in her forties, with long black dreadlocks and black clothes. – The host of an Oakridge house party was assaulted with bear spray after an unknown person tried to enter the house early Sunday morning. Investigators believe the suspect tried to follow a number of people into the house, where about 15 people were gathered. When the 21-year-old host refused to let the person in, he was sprayed in the face. VPD officers responded, offered assistance to the victim, and broke up the party. There were no serious injuries. VPD encourages anyone who is the victim of a crime, or has information about a crime, to call police so officers can investigate. Any in-progress crime where a suspect is on scene or there is an immediate risk to the public should be reported to 9-1-1. Less urgent matters, where a suspect has left and police are not immediately required, can be reported to VPD’s non-emergency line at 604-717-3321, or in some cases, reported online.

B.C. Green Party surpasses $1 million fundraising goal in 2021

3DLG VLFN OHDYH LV KHUH 6WDUWLQJ WKLV \HDU \RX GRQ W KDYH WR

THE B.C. Green Party announced on Tuesday that it surpassed its $1 million fundraising goal for 2021 by nearly 10%, raising a total of $1.093 million. This is the first time the party has received over $1 million in a non-election year. Monthly fundraising records were also set in February, March, April, May, June, July, August, October and December of 2021. A total of 5,645 donors, 34% of whom were first-time donors, made 23,219 donations in total. “I am beyond grateful to the thousands of donors who put their faith in our work this year,” said Sonia Furstenau, Leader of the B.C. Green Party. “Supporters, volunteers and donors have been more generous than ever with their time, energy and financial support. I find everyone’s actions inspiring and hopeful. “2021 was a year of immense challenges for many British Columbians. Heading into 2022, we need to take an honest look at the state of our province. The reality is that people are struggling. The government hasn’t made a dent in affordability for the average British Columbian. It’s scrambling to respond to foreseen climate disasters. It failed to learn from previous COVID-19 waves and was once again unprepared for the current wave. “What our party’s fundraising results tell me is that people are looking to the B.C. Greens for the decisive leadership and proactive vision that is missing. This is the type of government we will offer British Columbians in 2024. In the meantime, the B.C. Greens will continue to bring for-

Green Party. “Combined with the exceptional work of our MLAs, staff and volunteers, these fundraising results keep us on track to meet our ambitious goals for the 2024 election. More and more, British Columbians are looking to Sonia Furstenau and the B.C. Greens for leadership in difficult times.”

India is world’s top economic performer: UN report United Nations (IANS): “India’s recovery is on a solid path”, the UN said on Thursday reporting that the country recorded the highest estimated growth rate among the major economies last year and is set to be on the same trajectory during this year and the next. The UN’s annual World Economic Situation and Prospects (WESP) report estimated the growth rate of India’s gross domestic product (GDP) at 9 per cent last year and forecast it to moderate to 6.7 per cent this year and 6.1 per cent next year but still retain the highest growth rates among the large economies. In 2020, the year Covid-19 pandemic struck the world, India’s economy had shrunk by 7.1 per cent – a negative growth rate – according to the report. China, which came next among the large economies, was estimated to have grown by 7.8 per cent last year and forecast to grow by 5.2 per cent this year and 5.5 per cent next year. Overall, the global economy’s growth was estimated to be 5.5 per cent last year, bouncing back from a shrinkage of 3.4 per cent in 2020. The growth projections are 4 per cent this year and 3.5 per cent in 2023. The report said: “India’s economic recovery is on a solid path, amid rapid vaccination progress, less stringent social restrictions and still supportive fiscal and monetary stances.” The WESP raised India’s growth estimate for last year by 1.7 per cent and the growth projection for this year by 0.8 per cent from the expectations in its report a year

Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman ago. It ascribed slowing down of growth from 9 per cent last year to 6.7 per cent this year to waning base effects. While “robust export growth and public investments underpin economic activity”, the WESP warned that “high oil prices and coal shortages could put the brakes on economic activity in the near term”. “It will remain crucial to encourage private investment to support inclusive growth beyond the recovery,” it advised. “Inflation is expected to decelerate throughout 2022, continuing a trend observed since the second half of 2021 when relatively restrained food prices compensated for higher oil prices,” the report said while attaching a note of caution: “A sudden and renewed rise in food inflation, however, due to unpredictable weather, broader supply disruptions and higher agricultural prices, could undermine food

security, reduce real incomes and increase hunger across the South Asia) region.” The WESP said that it expected the Reserve Bank to raise interest rates throughout this year. In its snapshot of the world economy, the report said: “The global economic recovery is facing significant headwinds amid new waves of Covid-19 infections, persistent labour market challenges, lingering supply-chain challenges and rising inflationary pressures.” “The momentum for growth – especially in China, the United States and the European Union – slowed considerably by the end of 2021, as the effects of monetary and fiscal stimuli began to recede and major supply-chain disruptions emerged,” according to the report. Assessing the scenario in the report, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said: “In this fragile and uneven period of global recovery, the World Economic Situation and

Prospects 2022 calls for better targeted and coordinated policy and financial measures at the national and international levels.” The 46 countries classified as the least developed are estimated to grow by only 1.4 per cent this year, according to the WESP. “The time is now to close the inequality gaps within and among countries. If we work in solidarity – as one human family – we can make 2022 a true year of recovery for people and economies alike,” Guterres said. The WESP painted a mixed picture for South Asia. “Amid sound macroeconomic policies, Bangladesh has navigated the Covid-19 pandemic relatively well” and its “GDP is projected to expand by 6 per cent in 2022”, the report said. Its “economic activity rides on export growth and the rising demand for apparel, robust remittance inflows, and accommodative fiscal and monetary policies”, it added. Pakistan’s economy after an economic expansion of 4.5 per cent in 2021, is projected to grow by 3.9 per cent in 2022 “driven by private consumption, record-high remittances and fiscal support”, according to the report. But for Sri Lanka, the WESP projected a GDP growth of 2.6 per cent for this year and said that “its major challenges include food shortages, dwindling foreign reserves and sovereign debt risks”. Among the developed countries, the UK was projected to be the top performer with a 4.5 per cent GDP growth this year, after a 6.2 per cent estimated growth last year.

UP resignation spree: Is undercurrent in favour of the SP?

New Delhi (IANS): The resignation of three ministers in three days and the subsequent photos being uploaded with Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav has changed the dynamics of UP politics. Till a few days back the BJP was confident of winning back the state but the resignations have sent jitters down the spines in the BJP camp. The question is, whether there is an undercurrent in favour of the Samajwadi Party which is perceived to be the biggest gainer from these exits from the saffron party. The SP is having the last laugh in terms of defections as all roads lead to the party office on Vikramaditya Marg in Lucknow. The rebels from the BJP BSP and the Congress are lining up at Akhilesh Yadav’s door, which analysts believe is in favour of the SP, as leaders like Maurya have a strong ground presence and feedback. Delhi based independent analyst Shakil Akhtar says, “there is a feeling in the defectors that they can’t return to their constituency on a BJP symbol so they went to the party which has social justice in it roots while the BJP was dependent on social engineering.” The experts believe that the real issues are inflation, Covid deaths, stray animals, unemployment and the BJP has not been able to gauge the minds of its own MLAs and ministers. Dharam Singh Saini on Thursday became the third minister after Swami Prasad Maurya and Dara Singh Chauhan to quit the Yogi Adityanath led BJP government. Saini was Minister of State (Independent Charge), Ayush, Food Security

afternoon. Earlier, Swami Prasad Maurya, Dara Singh Chauhan (both ministers) Roshan Lal Varma, Brijendra Prajapati, Bhagwati Sharan Sagar, Vinay Shakya and Avatar Singh Bhadana left the party in the past two days. On Thursday, Mukesh Varma from Firozabad sent in his resignation. Then Dharam Singh Saini followed suit.

Akhilesh Yadav and Drug Administration. After sending his resignation to the Governor, he went to meet Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav. Interestingly, in his resignation letter, Saini levelled the same allegation that other legislators had levelled against the Yogi government. Saini, who represents the Nakud Assembly seat which is in western UP, has returned the security cover and residence allotted to him by the state government. He said he was resigning due to “gross neglect” of Dalits, backwards, farmers, unemployed youth and small traders. After legislators belonging to the OBC category left the BJP, it is now a Brahmin MLA Bala Prasad Awasthi who has also walked into the Samajwadi Party fold. Awasthi is a four-term MLA from Lakhimpur Kheri and a known Brahmin face in the Terai region. He also met Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday

MEANWHILE, IANS reported earlier in the week that the BJP-led alliance in Uttar Pradesh is projected to win 229 seats in the Assembly elections scheduled to be held in seven phases from February 10 to March 7, as per the ABP-CVOTER Battle for the States survey. The counting of votes will take place on March 10. The numbers are as many as 96 less than the 2017 figures, but will still give the BJP a comfortable simple majority in the 403-seat Uttar Pradesh Assembly, as per the survey. The Samajwadi Party-led alliance is projected to win 151 seats, a big jump of 103 seats compared to the 2017 results. But it is still far away from the majority. The sample size for the survey was 61,802 across 403 Assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh. The Samajwadi Party alliance led by Akhilesh Yadav has made a remarkable recovery, from an actual of 23.6 per cent vote share in the 2017 elections to a projected 33.5 per cent vote share, as per the latest opinion poll numbers made available on January 6. The tracker also exposes the upper circuit that the SP alliance has been unable to breach. In their best possible upswing, they could not breach the 35 per cent mark, which is critical to bring the BJP down. It seems the swing from BSP to SP+ has saturated and now Akhilesh Yadav will have to work on the 7 per cent odd votes that are parked with Congress to swing towards SP+ if he wishes to breach the 35 per cent-mark. The BJP, at projected vote share of 41.5 per cent, seems to have maintained its vote share of 41 per cent secured in the 2017 Assembly elections even in the latest projections. The worst seems to be over for the BJP as it trimmed and capped its decline at 40 per cent vote share. It is to be seen how many non-performing MLAs are denied tickets because maximum anti-incumbency is working against the sitting MLAs in Uttar Pradesh. Add to this the campaign of Prime

NEW

Minister Narendra Modi, and the BJP seems to be on the path of recovery at the moment. Incumbent Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath leads the pack with 43 per cent of voters preferring him as the CM, while Akhilesh Yadav gets the support of 34 per cent of the voters. Former Chief Minister Mayawati trails way behind with 14 per cent, while Priyanka Gandhi manages a little more than 3 per cent. The virtual absence of Mayawati and the BSP from being a serious contender in the race is startling for her supporters. The BSP vote share is projected to fall from 22.2 per cent in 2017 to a projected 12.9 per cent in the 2022 elections. If these projections hold, the BSP seems headed for a terminal decline in Uttar Pradesh. This has made the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections a two-horse race between Yogi Adityanath and Akhilesh Yadav. When the latter started gathering momentum in late 2021 and went on to stitch alliances with smaller parties, it looked like Uttar Pradesh could be headed for a close contest. There was a time when the vote share difference between the two fell to just about 6 per cent, but the Akhilesh juggernaut seems to have failed to gain more pace. One reason for this could be what analysts and pundits were saying about the impact of the farmers’ agitation on BJP’s fortunes, particularly in western UP. There were reports from the ground that the Jats and the Muslims could bury the memories of the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots and vote for the SP-RLD combine. The poll tracker shows that the projected vote share of BJP in the region is 41.2 per cent, far ahead of the projected 33 per cent for the SP-RLD combine. Even in Purvanchal, considered to be a region where the BJP seemed vulnerable, the SP alliance has made considerable inroads; but not enough perhaps to dislodge the BJP. As per the latest projections, the BJP gets a vote share of 40 per cent while the SP alliance gets a little more than 35 per cent. In the Awadh region of course, the BJP is more than 10 per cent ahead of the SP alliance. Despite her brave efforts and imaginative slogans like ‘Ladki Hoon, Lad Sakti Hoon’, along with myriad promises of welfare schemes, Priyanka Gandhi doesn’t seem to be able to stop the terminal decline of the Congress in the state. The Congress vote share is projected to increase marginally, while the number of seats could decline from 7 in 2017 to 5 this time.

Supreme Court says blame game no solution in Prime Minister’s security breach in Punjab

Modi declares annual ‘Veer Baal Diwas’ in honour of Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s martyred sons INDIAN Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday declared: “Today, on the auspicious occasion of the Parkash Purab of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, I am honoured to share that starting this year, 26th December shall be marked as ‘Veer Baal Diwas.’ This is a fitting tribute to the courage of the Sahibzades and their quest for justice.” He added: “‘Veer Baal Diwas’ will be on the same day Sahibzada Zorawar Singh Ji and Sahibzada Fateh Singh Ji attained martyrdom after being sealed alive in a wall. These two greats preferred death instead of deviating from the noble principles of Dharma.” Modi noted: “The bravery and ideals of Mata Gujri, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji and the 4 Sahibzades give strength to millions of people. They never bowed to injustice. They envisioned a world that is inclusive and harmonious. It is the need of the hour for more people to know about them.”

New Delhi (IANS): The Supreme Court on Wednesday said any lapse regarding the breach in security of Prime Minister Narendra Modi could have led to “devastating and serious consequences”, and made it crystal clear that one-sided enquiries, either by state government or Centre, will not be sufficient to resolve questions associated with security considerations. A bench headed by Chief Justice N.V. Ramana and comprising Justices Surya Kant and Hima Kohli constituted an enquiry committee headed by former top court judge Justice Indu Malhotra to probe the Prime Minister’s security breach in Punjab on January 5. “A judicially trained independent mind, duly assisted by officers who are well acquainted with the security conPhoto: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Facebook siderations and the Registrar General of the High Court who has seized the record pursuant to our earlier order, would be best placed to effectively visit all issues and submit a comprehensive report for the consideration of this Court,” it said. “The additional object is to avoid any human error, negligence or any wilful omission or commission which may hamper and/or expose the safety and security of the executive head of the nation while he is travelling in a particular state. Any lapse in this regard can lead to devastating and serious consequences,” the court added. 2.5 kg RDX, one detonator seized in Punjab Chandigarh (IANS): Close on the heels of terror module backed by the International Sikh Youth Federation (ISYF) busted, Punjab Police on Thursday said it have recovered 2.5 kg RDX, one detonator, codex wire, five explosive fuses along with wires, 12 cartridges of AK 47 Assault Rifle. Director General of Police (DGP) V.K. Bhawra said the recovery was made on the interrogation of Amandeep Kumar, the prime accused in the two recent incidents of grenade attacks in Pathankot. Amandeep was among the six operatives of ISYF arrested on Monday. He confessed to have carried out two grenade attacks in Pathankot, including at an Army camp in Pathankot. Senior Superintendent of Police Kanwardeep Kaur said following

revelations of Amandeep teams were sent to Gurdaspur district and recovered the explosive ma-

terial, which according to Amandeep was to be used in assembling of IEDs.

She said the consignment was provided by self-proclaimed chief of ISYF (Rode) Lakhbir Singh Rode, presently residing in Pakistan, to Amandeep through his associate and handler of this terror module, Sukhpreet Singh. Between June and July in 2021, Rode figured prominently in operationalising a series of terror modules through his network in Punjab and other countries. A large number of militant hardware that includes RDX, tiffin IEDs, associated explosive material for assembling IEDs, hand grenades, fire arms and also narcotics have been pushed by him across the international border mainly via drones and using his network of cross-border smugglers, an official statement said. Meanwhile, in less than 24 hours

after recovering 22 kg of heroin in Punjab, the Border Security Force on Wednesday seized another haul of the drug along with arms and ammunition close to the Pakistan border in three operations in Amritsar and Ferozepur sectors, officials said. In its continuing fight against weapon and drugs, the BSF foiled three attempts to smuggle contraband items and seized approximately 7.4 kg of suspected heroin, two pistols and 55 rounds in Ferozepur and Amritsar sectors, said the paramilitary force. A day earlier, the BSF recovered 22 kg heroin smuggled from Pakistan in the Khemkaran sector in three search operations. Punjab shares a 553 km long international border with Pakistan.

Manish Tewari Ministerial candidates. Manish Tewari on Wednesday said, “Punjab needs serious people”, and took pot shots at both Channi and Sidhu and dubbed them as non serious persons who are entertaining people. Tewari tweeted, “Punjab requires a CM who has solutions to Punjab’s challenges, capacity to take tough decisions. Punjab Needs serious people whose politics

is Not Social Engineering, Entertainment, Freebies and NOT regime favourites rejected by people in successive elections.” The Congress, so far, has not named any one as the Chief Ministerial face for the upcoming Assembly elections as the party considers that this leads to infighting and internal rift. But state unit chief Navjot Singh Sidhu on Tuesday said it is the people who will choose the next Chief Minister of the state and not the high command. Unveiling the first set of plans in his Punjab Model with focus on resurrection of Punjab, Sidhu, in the absence of Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and his Cabinet colleagues, told the media here: “Punjab Model is people’s model, an effort to give a roadmap to return power to people.” To counter the powerful ‘mafia model’, which has power to even stop the notification of Cabinet passed resolution, he said a model is needed to redistribute state resources and give power back to the rightful beneficiaries.

AAP may just fall short of majority in Punjab New Delhi (IANS): The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress are projected to poll 40 per cent and 36 per cent votes in Punjab, respectively, as per the ABP-CVOTER Battle for the States survey. The 117-member Punjab Assembly will go to the polls on February 14, and the counting of votes will be taken up on March 10. The numbers could propel the AAP in the pole position as far as the race for Punjab is concerned, as per the survey. But despite the lead in vote share, AAP may just fall short of majority due to regional distribution of voter base. Also, Congress is benefiting from its Mayawati moment by installing the first Dalit Chief Minister in the state, Charanjit Singh Channi, thus consolidating its hold over Dalit voters. The sample size for the survey was 14,360 across 117 Assembly seats in Punjab. Regardless of AAP’s continued lead, there is a distinct possibility of amplification of the current trend of convergence with Congress’ vote share. If the race tightens any further, the eventual outcome will be decided on a seat-by-seat basis. Therefore, candidate selection may become very important. Which brings us to the conclusion that this is a waveless election in Punjab. For all the political and social turmoil witnessed in the state, the electorate is remarkably split in

Bhagwant Mann its expression. If this situation continues to hold for another month, we may see a hung Vidhan Sabha in Punjab with AAP emerging as the single largest party, closely followed by the Congress. Shiromani Akali Dal’s (Badal) projected vote share has declined by 2 per cent from the last round, and it is expected to poll 18 per cent votes and may win around 20 seats in the Badal family strongholds. Currently it seems to be out of reckoning, but the party’s performance will most certainly act as the tie-breaker between AAP and Congress. Amarinder Singh’s alliance with the BJP does not seem to be adding up to anything significant. Currently the vote share (2.5

Channi regrets Prime Minister’s security breach during virtual meeting on COVID-19 New Delhi (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Thursday expressed regret over the security breach during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state on January 5. Channi expressed regret while participating in a virtual meeting chaired by Prime Minister Modi with Chief Ministers and Lieutenant Governors/Administrators of states and union territories to review the prevailing COVID-19 situation as well as the ongoing vaccination drive. “You visited Punjab. ‘Jo hua uske liye mujhe khed hai’ (I regret whatever happened),” Channi reportedly said. Sources said that Channi also wished the Prime Minister a long life.

“Tum salamat raho qayamat tak, aur khuda kare qayamat na ho (May you stay safe till the end and may there be no end),” sources quoting Channi said. On January 5, The Prime Minister’s rally in Ferozepur had to be cancelled due to a security lapse after some protesters blocked a route and forced his convoy to spend about 20 minutes on a flyover. The Prime Minister was en route the National Martyrs Memorial at Hussainiwala when the incident happened. Channi had earlier said that there was no security breach during the Prime Minister’s visit to the state. “There was no security lapse of any kind and there was no situation of any attack,” Channi had said.

BJP) and seat share (2 seats) of the grouping is projected to remain in lower single digits. However, the alliance’s performance may influence the fate of around 30 seats. Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi is preferred by 29 per cent Punjabis as the Chief Minister candidate in 2022 polls, and interestingly this number corresponds to the rough headcount of Dalit population in Punjab. Congress President Navjot Singh Sidhu is preferred by only 6 per cent of the voters. AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal is preferred by 17 per cent voters while Sukhbir Singh Badal of the SAD is the choice of 15 per cent Punjabis. The surprise of the pack is AAP’s Bhagwant Mann, who has shot to 23 per cent approval rating in the latest round of the survey, up from 13 per cent last time. If AAP declares him as the Chief Minister’s face, it could consolidate his numbers further as the total support for Kejriwal and Mann is almost 10 per cent more than Channi and 5 per cent more than Channi and Sidhu put together. Regionally, the Dalit population is more concentrated in Doaba and Majha regions that account for a total of 48 seats. The Congress is projected to win 25 out of its 40 seats from these two regions. AAP is doing significantly better in Malwa region that

accounts for the remaining 69 seats. It is expected to win 41 of its 55 seats from Malwa alone. Therefore, the three X factors that will ultimately decide the Punjab verdict are as follows: * The relative sweep of AAP and Congress in their respective strongholds * The performance of Akali Dal and its potential impact on AAP and Congress * Ability of Amarinder Singh to dent the prospects of Congress For now, despite a reenergised and repositioned political stance, Congress is facing more headwinds than AAP. Also, the rural peasantry, fresh from the protests at Singhu border, is unlikely to fully trust the Akali Dal or Congress. Both these parties have baggage with Jatt farmers that dominate the rural polity. In terms of Jatt Sikh politics, the survey projections are indicative of an emerging vacuum. From 1997-2021, Punjab saw a duopoly of Badal-Amarinder, and currently no leader is polling enough support to inherit the mantle of Jatt leadership. Sukhbir Badal is liked by some sections while others prefer Bhagwant Mann. Navjot Sidhu’s theatrics have not helped him gain traction in state politics, despite the outsized media imagery projected.

YOKOHAMA, JAPAN: Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. and Nissan Motorsports International Co., Ltd. today unveiled a newly designed Nissan Z GT500 race car at Fuji International Speedway. The new GT500 racer will participate in the Super GT Series starting with the 2022 season. Under the Nissan NEXT transformation plan announced in May last year, Nissan has been transforming its business to provide superior brand value. The move to enter the highly competitive Super GT series with the all-new Nissan Z sports car is part of these efforts. Nissan has always strived to deliver excitement to customers through innovation. In the early 1970s as a newcomer motor racing in the United States, Nissan clocked up straight wins at the SCCA C Production Series with the S30 240Z. In the 1990s, Nissan had multiple wins at the IMSA Series with the Z32 300ZX and its participation in the JGTC/Super GT series with the Z33 in the 2000s ultimately led to a series championship. Set to replace the iconic NISMO Nissan GT-R—which enjoyed the longest run in

the Japanese series of any Nissan car—the manufacturer’s new GT500 racer will battle against the Toyota Supra and Honda NSX

Type S in the ultra-competitive GT series. According to Nissan, this new race car is part of its “NEXT” transformation plan an-

nounced last year, in which the automaker highlighted a specific plan to overhaul its product lineup, image, marking strategies, and even motorsports programs. Japan’s Super GT series features two primary racing classes, GT300 and GT500, with the latter featuring the faster, more powerful cars. However, the field of cars is restricted when it comes to weight, downforce, and total horsepower output, with GT500 cars putting out around 650 hp from heavily managed engines with spec turbochargers. Nissan COO Ashwani Gupta said: “The Nissan Z GT500 symbolizes Nissan’s spirit of taking on challenges and bringing excitement to life. Through our racing efforts we continue to innovate our cars and we race to win with the same daring we have displayed so many times over the years.” President and CEO of NISMO Takao Katagiri said: “We are entering the 2022 Super GT series with our all-new Nissan Z GT500 car and our huge passion for motorsports. We hope that our fans will continue to passionately support the Nissan and NISMO motorsport teams.”

Saturday, Jan. 15, 2022 | Indo-Canadian Voice Main ToRonTo, on: Imagine driving a vehicle that offers extreme off-road capability – while also generating almost no emissions. That’s the promise embodied by the Lexus ROV Concept, officially unveiled recently The Lexus ROV (Recreational Off-highway Vehicle) Concept is a unique hydrogen-powered vehicle that reflects a commitment by Lexus to ensure exhilarating driving can co-exist with a carbon-free society centred on responsible mobility. “The Lexus ROV Concept is designed to enable our guests to explore the amazing natural environment that Canada has to offer, while minimizing their environmental footprint,” said Mart Gilbert, Director of Lexus in Canada. “This concept vehicle fuses our desire to develop lifestyle-oriented products with our industry-leading research into new technologies that contribute to carbon neutrality. The Lexus ROV Concept’s hydrogen-powered engine delivers the thrilling performance that today’s luxury drivers demand, while generating near-zero emissions to help

preserve and protect our environment for future generations of Canadians.” For the Lexus ROV Concept, the design team developed a vehicle that would look

good in all kinds of natural environments. The car bears all the true hallmarks of an off-road vehicle with its exposed suspension, protective cage and chunky off-road

tyres for driving along muddy tracks. Dimensions are: 3,120 mm (length), 1,725 mm (width), 1,800 mm (height). This hydrogen powered ROV concept is the result of Lexus’ desire to preserve true off-road pleasure in tomorrow’s low carbon society. To power this off-road fun, the 1.0-litre hydrogen engine works just like a petrol engine, but with a highpressure tank for compressed hydrogen which is delivered precisely by a direct hydrogen injector. Importantly, Lexus’ new hydrogen engine produces close to zero emissions, with a negligible amount of engine oil burned during driving. With a lightweight body composed of a strong pipe frame and suspension that boasts a large amount of travel, the driver will enjoy the car’s natural movements, the distinctive ‘Lexus Driving Signature’ and the possibility to go anywhere they desire. Designed for dynamic and comfortable driving, the agile design and the responsiveness of the hydrogen engine make the Lexus ROV a fun vehicle to drive with exceptional off-road capability.

Powered by water: BMW electric cars with regional green electricity implementing more and more such contracts, the BMW Group is increasing the share of the renewable or carbon-neutral electricity it generates itself. Since 2013, for instance, the four wind turbines at Plant Leipzig have provided all the electricity needed to manufacture the BMW i3*. Another of several examples from the BMW Group production network is the newest plant, in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, where production is largely powered using energy from large solar arrays. The energy goals the BMW Group has set itself are designed for the longer term. Between 2006 and 2019, emissions from production fell by more than 70 percent per car. Going forward Nedeljković explains: “We want to cut CO2 emissions by another 80 percent by 2030, to less than 10 percent of what they were in 2006.” The BMW Group has a strong foundation to build on, having raised the bar repeatedly over the last few decades in terms of sustainability. Continuous improvement remains central to the strategy to cut CO2

emissions and increase resource efficiency. As well as sourcing 100 percent green energy, since 2020 the BMW Group has been systematically investing in improving energy efficiency – partly by capitalising on the opportunities of digitalisation. Data analytics has already helped make pro-

duction more efficient, for instance with predictive machine maintenance and by minimising the number of parts rejected from the bodyshop. As well as drastically cutting actual CO2 emissions, the BMW Group will offset any remaining emissions (Scope 1 + 2) in full via relevant certificates.

Contracts have been signed with Stadtwerke München and RWE Supply & Trading for energy to be supplied by hydroelectricity from rivers Isar and Lech. Board Member for Production Milan Nedeljković: “We take a holistic view of sustainability. So rather than just minimising emissions from driving, we are working to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of our production processes.” The BMW Group already powers its production facilities worldwide entirely with green electricity today. “What’s new is the fact that in the future, we will source our renewable electricity directly from regional providers based close to our plants,” Nedeljković explains. “Our direct supply contracts add another major boost to the eco-credentials of the green electricity we use in production,” Nedeljković emphasises. No, I am not reviewing the famed British war epic from the 1970s. Mind you there is a distinct militaristic theme to Beans. Fresh food for fodder sees us delve deep into a very tense time in Canadian history. Well worth seeing this stirring drama from Mongrel Media will have you on the edge of your seats. For a change here’s a Canadian film actually worth seeing and definitely worth viewing on line as it appears on video on demand or your dvd selection. Timing is everything in life. You couldn’t pick a better time to release this movie than now. Unless you’ve been living under a rock by now all Canadians ( and dare I say the rest of the world) are aware of the horrific treatment levied against Aboriginal children in residential schools administered by the Catholic Church and legitimized by the then Liberal governments in Ottawa of the day. A more recent flashpoint that tore Canada apart was the crisis at Oka in 1990 Quebec. This is that story. Conflict between Mohawk citizens and Their white neighbours just outside of Montréal is at the heart of this movie. Told through the eyes of a young girl called Tekehentahkhwa thankfully nicknamed Beans we see just how violent this 1990 confrontation became. Lost innocence In this young girls soul

Who has lost the logic in the vaccine debate?

WHY would any logical person choose to face severe medical complications of COVID if they could be avoided? Most of us have weighed the issues and decided to follow vaccine recommendations. But some flatly refuse. Why? No issue is crying out louder for resolution than this vaccine debate. Now governments are set to mandate COVID vaccines to force hesitant citizens to comply. It’s been done before time and again – for childhood immunizations, for example. That’s one way to go about it. But a look at the medical evidence should help compel sensible people to opt in. A growing stack of studies shows that vaccinated people are much less likely to die from COVID than the unvaccinated. Do not people desire to stay on this planet? Undoubtedly, some people feel like giving up. The cause might be inept government, threat of nuclear war, increasing inflation, or a dysfunctional family. But death by COVID can be avoided. And note, this disease is not a pleasant way to die. Giving in to COVID is not a rational choice. Beyond the short-term risk of serious illness or death, there are awful complications of “long-COVID”, occurring when patients do not recover for several weeks or months following the start of symptoms. Estimates range, but studies show that 50% or more of COVID survivors suffer numerous long-term problems. Have a look at the reports of any leading research-intensive hospital. Toronto’s Sunnybrook Hospital is one example. Dr. Idan Roifman, cardiologist, is using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to find evidence of heart damage in recovered COVID patients. Observations show an adverse inflammatory effect of COVID infection on the heart muscle. Injury can be similar to a heart attack. This is not good news, especially given COVID also increases the risk of blood clots. The brain can be injured too, but researchers are not sure to what extent. One concern is that patients who have been on ventilators before recovering from COVID have been found to have micro-bleeds into the brain or mini strokes. Other individuals recovered from COVID have on-going inflammation in the brain. They suffer from lingering brain-fog and poor memory. Dr. Simon Graham, another researcher at Sunnybrook Hospital, is studying how COVID’s impact on the brain could be responsible for post-COVID persistent shortness of breath and abnormal heart rate. It’s logical to ask, could this brain pathology from COVID infection trigger mental health issues? Dr. Anthony Levitt, chief of Sunnybrook’s Hurvitz Brain Sciences Program, is trying to provide answers. An 18-month study of 7,500 people reveals those who have suffered from COVID have a greater risk of depression, anxiety and substance misuse, compared to those who have not been infected. A report in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine that long-COVID’s common symptoms include “cognitive impairment, memory loss, anxiety and sleep disorders.” Employment issues are also a concern. Why risk these complications? Critics complain the vaccine was too rushed, that it is a huge, unprecedented experiment with unknown effects. They do not

want to be guinea pigs. For some it is an intrusion into personal liberty. Others are convinced the vaccine does not provide immunity or won’t last long enough. They argue, “I don’t take drugs just because others do.” Or “I refuse the propaganda.” Some of the unconvinced reject becoming chronic users of pharmaceutical drugs. The conclusion? We weighed all aspects of these issues have chosen the safe path. We have no desire to be on ventilators gasping for oxygen! Be careful of what you refuse. Visit www.docgiff.com.
