Kamala Harris makes history as first female, first Black and first South Asian U.S. vice president

She graduated from Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of Law. “Vice President Harris and her sister, Maya Harris, were primarily raised and inspired by their mother, Shyamala Gopalan. Gopalan, a breast cancer scientist and pioneer in her own right, received her doctorate the same year Vice President Harris was born. “Her parents were activists, instilling Vice President Harris with a strong sense of justice. They brought her to civil rights demonstrations and introduced role models—ranging from Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall to civil rights leader Constance Baker Motley—whose work motivated her to become a prosecutor. “Growing up, Vice President Harris was surrounded by a diverse community and extended family. In 2014, she married Doug Emhoff. They have a large blended family that

stood up in court: Kamala Harris, for the people. “In 1990, Vice President Harris joined the Alameda County District
Attorney’s Office where she specialized in prosecuting child sexual assault cases. She then served as a managing attorney in the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office and later was chief of the Division on Children and Families for the San Francisco City Attorney’s Office. “She was elected District Attorney of San Francisco in 2003. In that role, Vice President Harris created a ground-breaking program to provide first-time drug offenders with the opportunity to earn a high school degree and find employment. The program was designated as a national model of innovation for law enforcement by the United States Department of Justice. “In 2010, Vice President Harris was elected California’s Attorney General and oversaw the largest state justice department in the United States. She established the state’s first Bureau of Children’s Justice and instituted several first-of-their-kind reforms that ensured greater transparency

KAMALA Harris made history at noon ET (9 a.m. PT) on January 20 as the first female, first Black and first South Asian vice president of the United States. Joe Biden became the 46th President of the United States. Harris is now the highest-ranking woman ever to serve in American government. Harris has shattered the barrier that has kept women from the highest rungs of power in the US for more than 200 years. She was sworn in Wednesday by Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the first Latina to serve on the Supreme Court. Moments before Harris’ swearing in, Lady Gaga sang the national anthem accompanied by the US Marine Corps band. Harris’ oath-taking ceremony was bookended by a performance from Jennifer Lopez, reported IANS. Dressed in a deep purple dress and coat crafted by Black designers, Harris placed her left hand on two Bibles with deep meaning in her life and political rise as she raised her right hand to swear the oath of office. One of the Bibles belongs to Regina Shelton, a Black woman who was an emotional anchor during Harris’ early years in California. The other Bible belongs to the late civil rights icon and Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, in a nod to his role in Harris’ choice of Howard University for her graduation and in shaping her thinking to see law as a tool to bring equity. Marshall also graduated from Howard, a legendary school among historically black universities. After taking the oath of office, a beaming Harris hugged her husband, Douglas Emhoff, and gave President Biden a fist bump.

PRIME Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday congratulated Joe Biden on his inauguration as the 46th President of the United States of America on behalf of the Government of Canada. Trudeau said: “Canada and the United States enjoy one of the most unique relationships in the world, built on a shared commitment to democratic values, common interests, and strong economic and security ties. Our two countries are more than neighbours – we

She visited Iraq, Jordan, and Afghanistan to meet with servicemembers and assess the situation on the ground. She also served on the Senate Judiciary Committee. During her tenure on the committee, she participated in hearings for two Supreme Court nominees. “As Senator, Vice President Harris championed legislation to reform cash bail, combat hunger, provide rent relief, improve maternal health care, and address the climate crisis as a member of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public
Works. Her bipartisan anti-lynching bill passed the Senate in 2018. Her legislation to preserve Historically Black Colleges and Universities was signed into law, as was her effort to infuse much-needed capital into lowincome communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. “On August 11, 2020, Vice President Harris accepted President Joe Biden’s invitation to become his running mate and help unite the nation. She is the first woman, the first Black American, and the first South Asian American to be elected Vice President, as was the case with other offices she has held. She is, however, determined not to be the last.” For more on Kamala Harris, and for Biden’s Inaugural Address, visit our website voiceonline.com

Trudeau disappointed about Biden’s decision to revoke permit for Keystone XL project
PRIME Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday said that while his government welcomed U.S. President Joe Biden’s commitment to fight climate change, it was disappointed at Biden’s decision to revoke the presidential permit granted for the Keystone XL oil pipeline. However, the government acknowledged the President’s decision to fulfil his election campaign promise on Keystone XL.
Trudeau said in a statement: “I spoke directly with President Biden about the project last November, and Ambassador [Kirsten] Hillman and others in our government made the case to high-level officials in the incoming administration. “Workers in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and across Canada will always have our support. Canada is the single-largest supplier of energy to the United
States, contributing to U.S. energy security and economic competitiveness, and supporting thousands of jobs on both sides of the border.” Trudeau added: “Despite President Biden’s decision on the project, we would like to welcome other executive orders made today, including the decisions to rejoin the Paris Agreement and the World Health Organization, to place a temporary moratorium
on all oil and natural gas leasing activities in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and to reverse the travel ban on several Muslim-majority countries. “I look forward to working with President Biden to reduce pollution, combat climate change, fight COVID-19, create middle class jobs, and build back better by supporting a sustainable economic recovery for everyone.”

A local collective of community health advocates have come together to form the SACH Community Hub to support Surrey’s diverse communities impacted by acute and emerging health challenges. SACH will bring together support services for communities most impacted by socioeconomic factors, mental health challenges, and addiction, in the Newton region of Surrey, according to a press release. Fraser Health Authority’s recent Chief Medical Health Officer’s Report stated that South Asian men represented 77% of the overdose cases in 2017. Although South Asians have high proportions of representation in Surrey (33%), Abbotsford (25%), and Delta (20%), this statistic is shockingly high. “Many of the available supports lack a tailored response that meet the specific needs of every single member of our community,” says
SACH Director Upkar Singh Tatlay. “SACH follows a unique model aimed at reducing barriers faced by diverse communities in accessing health and social services. We envision that SACH will provide a one-stop solution with relevant services available in culturally and linguistically appropriate formats, while using client-centered and family-focused approaches,” says SACH Director Allysha Ram. Drug toxicity deaths in the South Asian population increased by 255% between 2015 and 2018 compared to 138% among other residents in the Fraser Health Region. The number increased from 20 fatalities a year to 80. “SACH plans to offer a variety of health and social supports, including connecting clients to services related to substance use treatment and harm reduction, counselling, medical services,
income assistance, employment, food security, housing, personal hygiene, immigration, recreation, and victim services; while also providing opportunities for social connection and volunteering,” says SACH Director Jassy Pandher. The services will be available to individuals as well as their families. “While there is no simple solution to these complex issues, this group has the experience, and most importantly the drive, to advocate for and support populations that all too often fall through the gaps,” says SACH Director Gary Thandi. For the past several months, SACH has been actively engaging with stakeholders in the community, including the various levels of government. “The need for a hub that can provide much needed meaningful support and recovery is there and has been there for years in
our community. I’m thankful and grateful that this diverse group of caring people have come together to offer a solution,” says Aman Singh, civil rights lawyer and MLA for Richmond-Queensborough, who is also active in the recovery community. Other members of the SACH Board of Directors include Harman Singh Pandher, Anita Lal, and Larry Jhaj. SACH is raising funds for an outreach office that would be open to anyone who identifies a need, especially those who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness, struggling with addiction, mental health or socioeconomic challenges. This will encompass the uniformed frontline, community engagement, crime prevention and intervention initiatives. “I am pleased to announce the appointment of Mike LeSage to the Surrey Police Service as its newest Deputy Chief Constable. Our organization, and by extension the citizens of Surrey, are most fortunate to have the impressive depth of talent, capability, competence and experience that Mike LeSage brings. He is strong in character and culturally sensitive as one who celebrates and represents his cultural roots. I continue to focus my efforts on bringing the best of policing to serve the citizens of Surrey,” said Surrey Police Service Chief Constable Norm Lipinski. With the Executive Team nearing completion, Surrey Police Service is now focusing on the next layer of leadership and seeking to hire for the Superintendent rank over the course of the coming weeks. Posting for these positions can be found at surreypolice. ca/careers. LESAGE assumed the role of Chief Officer with CFSEU-BC in February 2020. He is responsible for the full range of
the unit’s operations throughout the province. LeSage was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and is a member of Garden River First Nation. He began his career with the RCMP in 1996 and spent five years in Williams Lake, BC, working in General Duty and First Nations policing. He subsequently moved to the Northwest Territories in 2001 where he worked in the Fort Smith Detachment, then in several positions in Yellowknife with Major Crimes and Drug Section, as the Mackenzie Gas Pipeline Coordinator, and finally with Drug and Organized Crime Awareness Service. In 2008, LeSage transferred to the Extra-Territorial Response Unit of the National Security Criminal Operations Branch in Ottawa. There he was the team commander on many significant terrorism investigations abroad and used his subject matter expertise on legal applications to train RCMP and other national and international police members. Michael went on to assume the role of Officer in Charge (OIC) of the Integrated National Security Enforcement Team where he was responsible for all the national security criminal investigations within the National Capital Region. In 2011 he transferred to National Headquarters (NHQ) as the OIC of National Aboriginal Policing and in 2012, assumed
the role of Acting Director General of National Aboriginal Policing and National Crime Prevention Services. In 2013, LeSage moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and took on the position of OIC of Integrated Organized Crime North. He was responsible for all organized crime and economic integrity investigations for northern Saskatchewan. A year later, in 2014, he returned to the Northwest Territories (G Division) as the OIC of Criminal Operations, where he was responsible for all policing operations in the NWT across 23 detachments serving 33 communities. He also served as Acting Commanding Officer of RCMP G Division. In January 2017, LeSage assumed the role of “O” Division (Ontario) Criminal Operations Officer where he was responsible for 1,800 members in several offices and detachments throughout the province. During his tenure, he oversaw the largest deployment related to a national security investigation in the history of the RCMP. LeSage holds a Certificate in Public Sector Leadership and Governance from the University of Ottawa and is an alumnus of the International Leadership in Counter Terrorism Program (LinCT). He received the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Award for his leadership in National Security in 2012, and in 2019 was the recipient of the Public Service Award from the Transformation Institute. Gurinder Mann of Surrey and Baljinder Kandola of Richmond receive Community Safety and Crime Prevention Awards GURINDER Mann of Surrey, Executive Director at Communities Embracing Restorative Action (CERA) Society, and Richmond RCMP Constable Baljinder Kandola were among the five community leaders who received the 23rd annual Community Safety and Crime Prevention Awards that were held by a virtual ceremony this year. The other recipients were Lianne Ritch of Vancouver, Dede Dacyk of Penticton and Sandra Bryce of Victoria, and the Victoria Sexual Assault Centre in Victoria. “These award recipients and nominees demonstrate that we can make a real difference in the lives of those who have been impacted by crime, violence and victimization,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General. “On behalf of the government, I want to thank each recipient for their dedication and commitment in keeping our communities safe and helping survivors of crime.” The awards acknowledge individuals, non-profit organizations, police and other local partners for their work in advancing crime prevention, restorative justice and other approaches that keep our communities safer. These efforts support provincial initiatives in policing, community safety and victim services. “Each of the award recipients has shown an outstanding commitment to community, to care and to make our communities safer,” said Grace Lore, Parliamentary Secretary for Gender Equity. “Their work has made a difference in the lives of British Columbians impacted by crimes, including survivors of sexual assault and abuse. I want to express my sincere gratitude for their efforts, for their trauma-informed and community-centred work and for all they have done to change lives in our province.”
Gurinder Mann GURINDER MANN The citation for Mann reads: “Winner of the Restorative Justice Memorial Award, Mann has been involved in the restorative justice community since he was a teenager. Beginning as a volunteer as a facilitator at Communities Embracing Restorative Action (CERA) Society, Mann became a board member and worked his way up to executive director in 2010, a position he still holds. His passion, leadership and dedication to justice have earned CERA considerable accomplishments during his tenure. Mann is known for being a remarkable leader, educator, reformer, advocate and active volunteer. His knowledge and skills in a vast range of areas have enabled him to make an outstanding contribution to restorative justice, crime prevention and public safety. According to the CERA website: “Born and raised in England, Gurinder completed his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology at the University of British Columbia (UBC), followed by a Master’s degree in Applied Legal Studies at Simon Fraser University. His belief in restorative justice brought him to
CERA in 2008, where he became a trained facilitator and later served on the Board of Directors, before becoming CERA’s Executive Director in 2010. “Gurinder spent six years in the field of intelligence for the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of BC (CFSEU-BC), formerly known as the Organized Crime Agency of BC. He is known for his excellence in the fields of justice, law, and crime prevention. His professional accomplishments have led to instructional assignments at the Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC) and Douglas College. “In addition to his proficiency in the justice and law enforcement arena, Gurinder is a specialist in the area of South Asian Studies. He possesses a second Master’s degree in Asian Studies and also serves as faculty at UBC.” BALJINDER KANDOLA The citation for Kandola reads: “Winner of the Youth Leadership Award, Cst. Kandola found her passion in crime prevention and community policing early in her 19-year policing career. As co-ordinator of the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program for the RCMP within Richmond schools, she has been instrumental in providing youth the tools they need to make healthy choices, including resistance strategies on how to deal with peer pressure and stress in a positive way. Since joining the DARE Society’s board of directors in 2016, Kandola has expanded her passion for education beyond schools, developing and implementing DARE initiatives and events within the community.” Last year in May, The VOICE in an article titled “Why Richmond RCMP Constable Bal Kandola decided to go virtual with her DARE lessons,” wrote in part: RICHMOND RCMP have taught DARE – Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) Program – to all Grade 5 stu-
Baljinder Kandola dents in Richmond for 25 years. However, the pandemic almost brought that to a halt. Fortunately, thanks to the passion and commitment of DARE officer, Constable Bal Kandola, this tradition has continued. When the announcement to keep schools closed was first made, Kandola was disappointed at the prospect of not being able to teach the DARE program for the final term of the school year. As she says, however, where there’s a will there’s a way. Kandola reached out to the Richmond School District and offered to provide the program in a virtual format. Since then Kandola has set-up her classroom in the Detachment and started recording her lessons. … The Drug Abuse Resistance Education Program is an internationally recognized drug prevention program. The keepin’ it REAL program is for Grade 5 and 6 students and consists of 10 weeks of lessons. The goal of the program is to guide youth towards making healthy choices, not only about drugs, but in all areas of their lives. While she has had to adapt to having an empty classroom, Kandola is
extremely happy that she is able to continue to provide this valuable program. “It’s been an adjustment to go online but I am so thankful that I’m able to reach my students,” says Constable Kandola. “I love teaching them so many great life lessons and giving them the tools which they can utilize in life. As Kandola points out, however, the teaching is not a one-way street. “I have learned so much from my students. I speak to my students about having purpose and spirit in everything they do in life. I learned that lesson from one of my student’s years ago,” says Kandola. “In the DARE Program, we speak to students about believing in themselves and being confident. I had asked my students what confidence looked like. One student said that I was confident because I taught them with purpose and spirit. As a police officer, I took pride in that statement as it shows that you can still have passion, purpose and spirit in the job that you do even after 20 years as a police officer. What you put out there is received.” Photos submitted

Gauravjit Singh, 26, of Philadelphia arrested for COVID-19 PPE fraud
NEWArK, New Jersey: A Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, man has been charged in connection with a $700,000 personal protective equipment (PPE) fraud scheme, Acting U.S. Attorney Rachael A. Honig announced this week. Gauravjit Singh, 26, is charged by complaint with one count of wire fraud. According to documents filed in this case and statements made in court, beginning in May 2020, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Singh engaged in a scheme to defraud by making various misrepresentations, including by claiming that he was a purveyor of PPE and that he had contacts at a factory in Nanjung, China, that manufactured medical gowns. Singh induced his victims to enter into an agreement with one of his businesses, Mask Medical LLC, pursuant to which Singh would be paid approximately $7.125 million in exchange for 1.5 million medical gowns, which ultimately were destined to the City of New York. His victims wired Singh, though his company GJS Solutions LLC, a deposit of approximately $712,500. Alert Delta Police officer was in right place at right time
DELTA Police officers often do paperwork in varied locations throughout the City, as a way to help keep an eye on things. One officer’s decision to station himself in the backstreets of Ladner may recently have saved a man’s life. The officer – a junior member in the department – was doing paperwork in his police vehicle at the corner of 28th Avenue and 53rd Street in Ladner just before 1 a.m. on Saturday, January 16. Out of the corner of his eye he spotted a moving light from a farm field to the east in the 5600-block of 28th Avenue. He thought it might be a flashlight in the blueberry fields and decided to investigate.
Instead of a person cutting through the fields, he came across a black pickup truck, over-
turned in the ditch. Roads in that area have steep ditches on either side, as this is a farming area. The vehicle was in approximately three to four feet of water and the vehicle’s front cab was completely submerged. Without hesitation the constable entered the frigid water to see if there were anyone in the truck. He was able to hear a banging noise from inside the cab. He immediately radioed for help, and began trying to break the driver’s side window. “He was able to partially extract the upper half of the driver’s body, while water was flooding in through the window,” said Acting Deputy Chief Harj Sidhu.
Once other police and Delta firefighters arrived, the man was able to be fully pulled out, and was transferred to a waiting ambulance for observation. The driver did not appear to have suffered significant injuries, but was taken to hospital for examination. “It is wonderful to see that when faced with a rapidly developing situation, our constable stepped up and made a quick decision to help, risking his own safety. He went above and beyond, and likely saved the driver’s life,” said Sidhu. “He was definitely in the right place at the right time.” Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in this crash.
Hundreds of tips to Crime Stoppers led to gang-related arrests and illegal gun seizures
MORE than 500 anonymous tips about gangrelated activities and illegal weapons were received by Metro Vancouver Crime Stoppers last year, about a tenth of all tips received. Collectively, they led to several arrests that might not have occurred without the tipsters’ information. “With the spike in recent gang-related activity in the Lower Mainland, Crime Stoppers is urging local residents to keep providing anonymous tips with information that could help police investigate, make more arrests and save lives,” said Linda Annis, Executive Director of Metro Vancouver Crime Stoppers, on Tuesday.
Stoppers responded with a series of ‘Guns and Gangs’ ad campaigns. In all, these campaigns are credited with generating 2587 tips over the past five years, leading to the arrest of 15 gang members, 111 arrests for illegal weapons offences and 213 guns being seized.
Gang Activity / Illegal Weapons Tips Statistics – 2020 * Total gang activity / illegal guns tips in 2020: 510 * Number of tips related specifically to illegal guns: 401 * Number of arrests based on tips about gang or illegal gun activity: 21 * Number of charges laid: 34 * Number of illegal weapons seized: 17 “The new surge in gang crime in the past few weeks is reminiscent of a similar outbreak seen in the Lower Mainland several years ago,” said Annis. “At that time, Metro Vancouver Crime
Other 2020 Crime Stoppers Statistics Year-end statistics for 2020 just published by Metro Vancouver Crime Stoppers’ in its annual Impact Report show 5,017 tips were received for all categories of crime (compares closely with 5,137 tips received in 2019). Information from these tips led to 72 arrests and 135 charges laid in 2020.
In addition, more than $2.7 million in property and illicit drugs were seized last year including 16 vehicles. Since the inception of Metro Vancouver Crime Stoppers more than 35 years ago, more than 8,200 arrests have been made and half-a-billion dollars in property and drugs have been recovered.

Shooting at Coquitlam residential building
COQUITL AM RCMP are investigating a shooting that occurred at a residential building in Coquitlam. Early morning on Saturday, January 16, Coquitlam RCMP responded to Suspect being led away by police. Screengrab a shots-fired call in the 600-block of Whiting Way in Coquitlam. A woman was found with a nonlife-threatening gunshot wound and was immediately taken to hospital for medical assistance. The Lower Mainland District Emergency Response Team was called to assist and a 21-year-old male was arrested without incident at the scene and remains in custody. This appears to be an isolated incident and there is no risk to public safety, police said. CTV News reported that residents heard a loud bang followed by the fire alarm going off. A resident said that they heard a girl yelling for help outside of the lobby area. They heard the fire alarm and came downstairs. Another resident said that the victim was rolling around holding her arm and was pretty much covered in blood. After a standoff for a few hours, police had a man in custody. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who may have further information are asked to contact the Coquitlam RCMP at 604-945-1550 or Crime Stoppers, if they wish to remain anonymous, at 1-800-222-8477 or www.solvecrime.ca. The Coquitlam RCMP remains on scene as the investigation is ongoing.

Premier Horgan says government can’t prevent people from travelling to B.C.
PREMIER John Horgan on Thursday announced that a review of the government’s legal options have made it clear that it can’t prevent people from travelling to British Co-

lumbians safe. My thanks go to everyone in B.C. who has been working hard to keep the spread under control. “We’ve heard from many people who are worried travel from outside B.C. has contributed to the spread of COVID-19. In response to those concerns, we asked for legal options on restricting interprovincial travel and a better understanding of the impact of travel on transmission. “The review of our legal options made it clear we can’t prevent people from travelling to British Columbia. We can impose restrictions on people travelling for nonessential purposes if they are causing harm to the health and safety of British Columbians. Much of current interprovincial travel is work related and therefore cannot be restricted. Public health officials tell us what is most important is for everyone to obey health orders, wherever they are, rather than imposing mobility rules. Therefore, we will not be imposing travel restrictions at this time.”

John Horgan Horgan added: “If we see transmission increase due to interprovincial travel, we will impose stronger restrictions on non-essential travellers. We will continue to work with the tourism and hospitality sectors to make sure all possible safety precautions are in place.” He said: “Today, I spoke with my colleagues across Canada at the Council of the Federation and First Ministers’ meetings. The Prime Minister is exploring further international travel restrictions, and B.C. stands ready to assist. I asked my colleagues to carry a message back to their citizens: now is not the time for non-essential travel. We ask all British Columbians to stay close to home while vaccines become available. And to all Canadians outside of B.C., we look forward to your visit to our beautiful province when we can welcome you safely.”

B.C.’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout plan PREMIER John Horgan, Health Minister Adrian Dix, Minister of Health, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Dr. Penny Ballem, executive lead for B.C.’s immunization efforts, on Friday announced details of the next phases in B.C.’s COVID-19 Immunization Plan that will will see approximately 7.4 million doses of vaccine administered to every British Columbian who is eligible to receive it between April and the end of September. “The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged us all in extremely difficult ways,” said Horgan.
“Together, we have faced this pandemic with strength, courage and compassion, and we are starting to feel optimistic that, one day, COVID-19 will be in our rear view. At every step, our plan puts the health and safety of our most vulnerable people at the centre, and when it’s your turn, I encourage everyone to get their COVID-19 vaccine and help us move forward, together, to a healthier province.” The government said B.C.’s four-phased COVID-19 Immunization Plan is based on scientific evidence, as well as expert advice and guid-

ance from the National Advisory Committee on Immunization, B.C.’s Immunization Committee and B.C.’s public health leadership committee. The plan, which got underway in December 2020, starts by first immunizing those who are most vulnerable to severe illness and death, including long-term care residents and the healthcare workers who care for them, remote and atrisk Indigenous communities, and seniors. “Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, our Province, with steady guidance by Dr. Bonnie Henry, has made decisions based on science, data and evidence from health experts,” said Dix. “Our plan puts people at the forefront of every decision, and our immunization rollout will guide us through the spring and summer, ensuring that those who are most in need of the vaccine will receive it as soon as possible.” With each phase, more people in B.C. will be eligible to be immunized. Phase 1 has had more than 103,000 people in B.C. receiving their first dose of vaccine and second doses are underway. Phase 2, starting in late February, expands immunizations to additional vulnerable populations, Indigenous communities and Elders, health-care staff and all seniors over the age of 80. Together, these two phases are focused on people who are most at risk. As age is the single greatest risk factor for severe illness and death, Phase 3, starting in April, will expand to include people between the ages of 79 to 75 and work backwards in five-year increments to include those age 60 and over. Also included in this phase are people with certain underlying health conditions that make them clinically extremely vulnerable (see backgrounder for details). It is important to note that no one will lose their place in line. For example, if an elderly relative is in Phase 2 and cannot be immunized at that time, they can be immunized at any point thereafter. “This is an extraordinary time with what is now the most significant step on our path to protecting our communities and our health-care system,” said Henry. “For many months, British Columbians have been working hard to keep their friends, family and communities safe, and I want to thank everyone for their continued commitment.” As additional vaccines are approved and become available, people who are front-line essential workers or work in specific workplaces

or industries may also be able to start receiving vaccines later in Phase 3. Phase 4 is anticipated to begin in July 2021 for the rest of the eligible population, starting with people aged 59 to 55 and working backwards in five-year age groups until everyone over the age of 18 who wants a COVID-19 vaccine receives it. “We’re working closely with our regional health authorities, our colleagues at the BC Centre for Disease Control over these first several weeks of the plan,” said Ballem. “Moving ahead, we will reach out to other community, faith and business leaders throughout the province to ensure that, by working together, the deployment of these vaccines is done quickly and safely. Every immunization for COVID-19 is one step closer to a healthier future for us all, and that is why so much effort and thought has gone into this plan.” Approximately four million British Columbians are eligible to receive the COVID-19 immunization. Starting in March 2021, pre-registration for the vaccine will begin to open online and by phone for the general public, starting with those aged 79 to 75. Those who are considered “clinically extremely vulnerable” will receive their immunization beginning in April. People who are pre-registered will get a reminder to book their appointment as soon as they are eligible. Additional details on the registration process, registration timing and availability and immunization clinic locations will be available in the coming weeks.

in this important initiative and excited to be part of renewing and ever strengthening our BC Liberal Party,” said Helme. “This is an historic time for our party as we embark on the process of selecting a new leader who will unite our coalition and put British Columbians first,” said LEOC
Hansen. The committee has been tasked with determining the timeline for the election, establishing the rules that will guide the race, and implementing the process by which members will elect the leader. “The election of a new leader
is an integral part of the renewal and rebuilding process that the BC Liberal Party and its members are currently engaged in,” said Lindsay Cote, Interim Executive Director of the BC Liberal Party. “I want to thank the members of LEOC for dedicating their time and expertise to this extremely im-
portant process that will have a significant impact on the future of both the party and the province.” All members of the party’s executive and LEOC have pledged to remain neutral throughout the leadership process to ensure fairness and accountability.
MP Derek Sloan kicked out of Conservative Caucus THE Conservative Caucus on Wednesday voted to kick out the controversial MP Derek Sloan. On Monday, Conservative Party Leader Erin O’Toole had announced that Sloan’s “acceptance of a donation from a well-known white supremacist is far worse than a gross error of judgment or failure of due diligence.” O’Toole added: “In accordance with the Reform Act, I have initiated the process to remove Mr. Sloan from
as possible. Moreover, as Leader of Canada’s Conservatives, I will not allow Mr. Sloan to run as a candidate for our party.” On Tuesday, O’Toole said: “The Conservative Caucus voted to remove Derek Sloan not because of one specific event, but because of a pattern of destructive behaviour involving multiple incidents and disrespect towards the Conservative team for over a year. These actions have been a consistent distraction from
Derek Sloan the Conservative Party of Canada caucus. I expect this to be done as quickly
our efforts to grow the Party and focus on the work we need to do. Events of the past week were simply the last straw and led to our caucus making the decision it did today.” He added: “I did not vote to remove Derek Sloan from our caucus because he is a social conservative. We have Members of Parliament of deep compassion and unmatched character, who like many Canadians, draw strength from their faith. The Conservative
Party is a big tent that is reflective of all Canadians. People of all backgrounds have a place in our Party.” He said he wanted all Canadians to feel welcome in the Conservative Party, adding: “The focus of Canada’s Conservatives is getting as many people back to work, in every part of Canada, in every sector, as quickly as possible.” O’Toole said: “As politicians in Canada, we must hold ourselves to the highest standards. Canadians de-
serve nothing less. “We are ready to do whatever it takes to get Canada working again. In the next election, Canadians will ask themselves, ‘who do I trust to create jobs and get the economy back on track?’ “Our party is working hard to earn the trust of Canadians. Canada’s Conservatives got us out of the last recession – and I know we can lead Canada out of this one too. Let’s get back to work.”
BC Liberals slam NDP for cutting disability and income assistance in half
THE BC Liberals said on Wednesday that as hundreds of thousands of British Columbians wait for their BC Recovery Benefit cheques promised to them by Christmas, this is the first day that persons with disabilities will see their COVID income and disability payments cut in half by John Horgan and the NDP.
“Despite John Horgan’s insistence that persons with disabilities would not see cuts to the vital supports they depend on, the grim reality of this poorly-planned benefit is now coming to the surface,” said Opposition Critic for Social Development and Poverty Reduction Dan Davies. “Today — on the first day that thousands of individu-

als and families will see their income assistance cheques cut in half — these backlogs are going to affect the most vulnerable members of our communities the hardest.” While the NDP insisted that BC Recovery Benefit cheques would arrive by Christmas and make up for the cuts in disability and income assistance, new figures from the
Ministry of Finance reveal that the applications of only 1.5 million of the 3.7 million eligible British Columbians have been approved. Of the 490,000 applications currently flagged for review, only 13 per cent have been approved as of mid-January. “With hundreds of thousands or even millions of applications still being pro-
cessed, it could be weeks or even months until persons with disabilities will see this one-time cheque,” concluded Davies. “It is time for John Horgan to admit he made a mistake and fully reinstate the $300 monthly COVID Disability and Income Assistance supplement his NDP government took away from vulnerable people.”

Julie Payette resigns as Governor General PRIME Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Thursday that he has received Governor General Julie Payette’s resignation. In a statement, Trudeau said: “Ms. Payette became Governor General on October 2, 2017, and has fulfilled her duties to uphold parliamentary democracy and serve the public. “Every employee in the Government of Canada has the right to work in a safe and healthy environment, and we will always
Julie Payette take this very seriously. Today’s announcement pro-
vides an opportunity for new leadership at Rideau Hall to address the workplace concerns raised by employees during the review. “On an interim basis, the Chief Justice of Canada will be fulfilling the duties of the Governor General. A recommendation on a replacement will be provided to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and announced in due course.” Earlier, media outlets reported that Payette had resigned following an independent review of workplace harass-
ment allegations by former and current staff of Rideau Hall.
Last July CBC had reported that Payette allegedly verbally harassed employees to
the point where some were reduced to tears or left the office altogether.
Vancouver Council adopts new code of conduct, approves establishment of Integrity Commissioner
VANCOUVER City Council and its Advisory Board members will soon have a new code of conduct and the benefit of an Integrity Commissioner, making Vancouver the second municipality in British Columbia to voluntarily establish an independent ethics position. The new code of conduct bylaw will provide greater clarity and less overlap with related processes (e.g., human rights complaints), new tools including informal dispute resolution, and increased transparency through a requirement that investigation reports be made public and that Council vote on any sanctions in a public meeting. Under the enhanced code, complaint and resolution procedures allow for preliminary vetting of complaints and informal dispute resolution where possible. The new code also addresses areas not covered by the current code, including multiple complaints, withdrawing of complaints, and cooling off periods around elections. The Integrity Commissioner, as an independent officer on a set term, will be responsible for investigating code of conduct complaints, advising members of Council as requested regarding their ethical obligations and responsibilities and aiding the public in their understanding of the code of conduct bylaw. The Integrity Commissioner will also be required to produce an annual report including recommendations for improvements to the code of conduct, and to submit an annual budget for approval. In line with best practice in other jurisdictions and recognizing the different roles performed by elected officials and City staff, the new code applies to Council and Advisory Boards only. A revised code for City staff will be brought forward later this year. Until that time staff will continue to be subject to the current code of conduct and other relevant City policies, including policies addressing respectful workplace and human rights and harassment.

Background In response to a Council resolution in late 2019 that asked City staff to review and update the City’s code of conduct, staff undertook an analysis of the current code. Based on this review, staff identified shortcomings in the current code of conduct and recommended that a new code of conduct be drafted for Council and Advisory Committees, separate from the code of conduct that applies to City staff. In response to legislation enacted in various provinces, many municipalities across Canada have recently enacted or revised their codes of conduct and retained independent ethics advisors. British Columbia does not have any requirements for a municipal code of conduct, or the implementation of an Integrity Commissioner. Vancouver is joining the City of Surrey in voluntarily implementing a comprehensive

B.C. state of emergency extended until February 2
“We will continue to penalize selfish and unlawful actions and work to ensure the public does not face unnecessary risks”
THE Province of British Columbia on Tuesday formally extended the provincial state of emergency, allowing health and emergency management officials to continue to use extraordinary powers under the Emergency Program Act (EPA) to support the Province’s COVID-19 pandemic response. The state of emergency is extended through the end of the day on February 2 to allow staff to take the necessary actions to keep British Columbians safe and manage immediate concerns and COVID-19 outbreaks. “I know this has felt like the longest winter ever, but we’re starting to see light at the end of this pandemic tunnel, so don’t give up now,” said Premier John Horgan. “The hard work of British Columbians in
Mike Farmworth flattening the curve continues to pay off, vaccines are on the way, and we’re working on a strong recovery. There is too much at stake to let our guard down now.” The extension of the provincial state of emergency is based on recommendations from B.C.’s health and emergency management officials. The original declaration was made on
March 18, 2020, the day after Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C.’s Provincial Health Officer (PHO), declared a public health emergency. On December 16, 2020, the Province announced enhanced enforcement measures to keep British Columbians safe and mitigate the impacts of COVID-19. This included strengthening COVID-19 fine collection measures and asking provincial enforcement officers to support police and increase enforcement by issuing violation tickets during their normal course of duties or when in public places. “I want to thank all those British Columbians who are following public health orders, as well as the police working hard to enforce those orders with the support of bylaw of-
ficers and local governments,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General. “And to the minority of British Columbians who continue to miss the message that we’re all in this together, we will continue to penalize selfish and unlawful actions and work to ensure the public does not face unnecessary risks.” The Province, with the support of police and other enforcement officials, continues to use measures under the EPA to limit the spread of COVID-19, including issuing tickets for owners or organizers contravening the PHO’s orders. On July 10, the COVID-19 Related Measures Act came into force, enabling provisions created for citizens and businesses in response to the COVID-19
pandemic to continue as needed, should the provincial state of emergency end. Quick Facts * Between August 21, 2020, and January 15, 2021, 693 violation tickets were issued, including: - 119 $2,300 tickets to owners or organizers contravening the PHO’s order on gatherings and events; - 26 $2,300 violation tickets for contravention of the PHO’s Food and Liquor Serving Premises Order; and - 548 $230 tickets issued to individuals who refused to comply with direction from law enforcement. * The Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General is continually working to align EPA
enforcement orders with those of the restrictions enacted by the PHO. * Additionally, since the pandemic began, police agencies in British Columbia have issued 85 violation tickets to individuals who were in contravention of the federal Quarantine Act, totalling $93,466. The purpose of the Quarantine Act is to protect public health by taking comprehensive measures to prevent the introduction and spread of communicable diseases. * Declarations of provincial states of emergency may be issued by the minister responsible under the EPA. * The provincial government can extend the period of a declaration made by the minister responsible for further periods of up to 14 days at a time.

‘If teachers aren’t prioritized for vaccination, safety measures in schools must be improved’: BCTF
B.C. Teachers’ Federation President Teri Mooring said on Friday that if teachers aren’t prioritized for a vaccine, the government must take immediate action to improve safety measures in schools. In a statement, Mooring said: “Our collective duty during the COVID-19 pandemic must always be about keeping people safe
and saving lives. Making sure our elders are not put at risk or die because of COVID-19 needs to be our top priority. “BC teachers, like many others, will be disappointed to see there is no prioritization for the frontline workers who have kept our schools, public serTeri Mooring
vices, and economy open. There had been hope in prior announcements that such prioritization would be possible. However, the vaccine supply limit is beyond our control and those among us who are most vulnerable of death and serious illness must be vaccinated first. Hopefully more vaccines are approved and this immunization strategy
will be appropriately adjusted and accelerated.” She added: “There is no denying that teachers are stressed, anxious, and even afraid. We do not have the layers of protection in our schools that exist in other environments. If teachers are not prioritized for a vaccine, this government must take immediate action to improve safety
measures in our schools. We must have a mandatory mask mandate, we must have better physical distancing measures, and we must have ventilation upgrades for our classrooms. Schools need the same safety measures as every single other workplace. This government and school districts must do more.”
Semi-conscious driver found in Surrey with drugs and stolen shotgun
A recent check of a semiconscious man in a vehicle resulted in the seizure of drugs, cash and a stolen shotgun in Surrey’s Whalley area. On Wednesday, January 20 at 8:15 a.m., a Surrey RCMP frontline officer was approached by a concerned citizen regarding a semiconscious driver who was parked in a running vehicle in the 10300-block of King George Boulevard. While checking on the well-being
of the driver, the officer noted signs of possible drug or alcohol consumption and launched an impaired investigation.
The officer also observed open alcohol and suspected drugs inside the vehicle. The driver was subsequently arrested for possession
for the purpose of trafficking and refusing to comply with a breath demand. Officers took the driver to a local hospital for medical attention, before taking him into police custody. As the investigation progressed, the vehicle was searched and officers located approximately 21 grams of suspected cocaine, 68 grams of suspected fentanyl, approximately $1,400 cash, a stolen shotgun, and ammunition.
The driver was held in custody and, on Thursday, January 21, 36-year-old Ian Langthorne was charged with six offences related to the illegal possession of a firearm, drug trafficking, and impaired driving. “We are grateful to the concerned citizen who flagged down the officer. As a result of their actions, officers were able to get a significant amount of drugs and a stolen gun off the streets, and put a stop to what could have been
a dangerous situation on our roads,” said Cpl. Joanie Sidhu, Surrey RCMP Media Relations Officer. “Our frontline officers are trained in quickly adapting their response to changing circumstances. In this case, a check well-being turned into a much bigger investigation.” Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502, or Crime Stoppers, if they wish to remain anonymous, at 1-800-2228477 or www.solvecrime.ca.
Federal NDP slams government for delay in vaccination FEDERAL NDP Health Critic Don Davies on Tuesday said in a statement that Canadians are extremely disappointed to learn that shipments of the PfizerBioNTech vaccine to Canada have been suspended entirely for next week and demanded transparency from the government. He said: “This will further delay vaccination for Canada’s highest risk populations at a time when COVID-19 cases are surging across the country, and federal modelling warns
Don Davies
of worse days to come. “For months, the Trudeau Liberals have been secretive about the terms of the deals they’ve signed with
big drug manufacturers. They are also displaying a pattern of contradictions that are becoming unacceptably common. “Just last week, the federal government claimed that Canada’s vaccine shipment would be reduced by 50 percent over four weeks, rather than suspended entirely. We are also disturbed to learn that the European Union will have a much shorter interruption in deliveries than Canada, despite assurances from the Trudeau Liber-
als that countries will be impacted equally by supply reductions. “Further, in light of PfizerBioNTech’s delivery disruption, it’s unfathomable that the federal government recently declined to purchase up to 16 million additional doses of the Moderna vaccine without disclosing the full terms of this foregone option.” Davies stressed: “Transparency is essential for maintaining the public’s trust and confidence in Canada’s vaccination
strategy.” He added: “New Democrats are once again calling the federal government to reveal how many vaccine doses have actually been secured for each month until September 2021. Canadians deserve clarity since, as we’ve now seen, these orders aren’t firm. “Today, we also ask the federal government to confirm if Canada is actually guaranteed delivery of 4 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine by
the end of March 2021, or if this date simply represents another floating target. “Canada’s federal government is responsible for ensuring we have access to enough vaccine doses to protect Canadians from COVID-19. People are making tremendous sacrifices to keep their communities safe because they understand that every day matters during this pandemic. They need and deserve the full details of Canada’s vaccine delivery timeline.”

Victim was stabbed in altercation at Burnsview Secondary School DELTA Police said on Wednesday that they recovered a knife that was allegedly used in Tuesday’s assault at Burnsview Secondary School, and confirmed that the victim was stabbed. Both the victim and suspect are youths who attend Burnsview Secondary and are under the age of 18. The student who was injured and taken to hospital has now been released to the care of their family. The suspect was arrested January 19, and has been released to the custody of their family, under a number of conditions, which include not attending Burnsview Secondary. The suspect is not known to police, and this matter is not believed to be linked to any gang violence. “This appears to be a conflict between two students that unfortunately escalated to violence, said Cris Leykauf, spokesperson for Delta Police. “Police are taking this incident extremely seriously, and remain very com-
mitted to working with the Delta School District on school safety. The Delta Police Department has an active School Liaison Officer program in which officers present on age-appropriate topics throughout elementary and high school and help forming relationships up to the Student Police Academy at the Grade 12 level. The DPD also has a highly committed youth team, which works daily with high risk or at-risk youths, running programs such as Yo-Bro, Yo-Girl, and regularly refers youth to counselling and other assistance programs, added Leykauf. As both the victim and suspect are youths under the age of 18, police will not be releasing any other information in order to protect the privacy of both individuals, and out of consideration for their young age. It is requested that those discussing the incident on social media refrain from releasing any information which could identify either youth, and potentially inflame the matter.

A 57-year-old woman, receiving physiotherapy for an injured ankle, suddenly suffered a seizure, became unconscious, and was rushed to Emergency. The obvious diagnosis, a sudden stroke. But as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the English doctor and writer who created the fictional private detective, Sherlock Holmes, wrote, “There is nothing more deceptive than an obvious fact. A report in the Canadian Medical Association Journal shows that Doyle was right. Doctors must sometimes think like Sherlock Holmes. The ultimate diagnosis was not a stroke. Rather, a complication from the triple A disease, abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). It’s a problem that doesn’t receive much press. But it killed Albert Einstein, the famous scientist, Lucille Ball, the TV star, and the actor George C Scott. Unless diagnosed early, before it ruptures, AAA is an efficient assassin. The aorta is the main artery that delivers blood from the heart to the entire body. It’s about the size of a garden hose and after leaving the heart it extends to the neck a short distance, then down the back of the abdomen. During the last 60 years the risk of AAA has tripled. This is in part due to improved diagnostic methods and an aging population. It’s also more common in males than females, and about five percent of men over age 65 have some degree of aortic aneurysm. Increased blood pressure is a major risk factor for AAA. It’s also more likely to develop in smokers and those suffering from chronic lung disease. But AAA can result from atherosclerosis (hardening of arteries) that gradually weakens the arterial wall and is a major cause of heart attack which ends the
lives of so many North Americans. An aortic aneurysm may be without symptoms until rupture occurs in which case the hemorrhage is so sudden and severe that death is speedy. But today many aneurysms are diagnosed during other diagnostic abdominal procedures. This provides significant time to decide how these herniations are best treated, particularly since the majority of aneurysms expand at a very slow rate. Since major surgery is involved to remove an aneurysm, it’s prudent to monitor them every six to twelve months by abdominal ultrasound, CT scans, and MRIs to detect changes in dimensions. In the final analysis, the decision depends on the size of the aneurysm. Surgery is normally advised when the aneurysm measures 5 to 5.5 centimeters as this is when they’re more likely to rupture. In some cases, a surgical stent is placed inside the aneurysm to decrease the risk of rupturing. Rather than using an abdominal incision, the stent is inserted through the femoral artery in the groin and then guided up and into the weakened aortic wall. This operation is more serious than having an appendix removal so surgical expertise is vital. It’s the old story that practice makes perfect, whether a plumber or a surgeon. For instance, in one study for aneurysms repaired by a vascular surgeon in a university hospital, the mortality rate was 2.2%. But in hospitals where surgeons were performing fewer cases and were less experienced, the mortality rate was 5.5%. Remember the common Gifford-Jones recommendation. If you are told surgeon X is the best for the operation and that surgeon has the personality of Dracula, don’t look elsewhere. It’s the hands that do the surgery, not the personality. The story of the patient with the injured ankle had a happy ending. She was discharged in nine days. It reminds doctors that 30% of AAA have neurological signs, not pain or other symptoms. Like Sherlock Holmes, doctors need to be good detectives.

Vancouver real estate: Commercial investment down 22 per cent Vancouver commercial real estate sales volume was down in the third quarter, but industrial and multifamily deals held strong, increasing almost 16 per cent.
The $82.5 million sale of Plaza 500, an older apartment building, was the most notable commercial real estate transactions for its dollar value in the third quarter of 2020, according to Altus Group’s latest report. But despite its prime location — across from Vancouver City Hall and City Square and two blocks from the Broadway-City Hall Canada Line station — and its redevelopment potential, the sale price was below the property’s assessed value of $86.212 million. With “continued uncertainties amid the second wave of rising case numbers, investment in commercial real estate has slowed in Vancouver, Altus said. There were “more restrictive measures across the city, and with it remained a hesitance amongst investors.
There were 343 transactions valued at a total of $1.5 billion in the third quarter, bringing the year-to-date total to $5.6 billion, down 22 per cent from the same period in 2019. Commercial real estate sales in the third quarter posted the lowest total since the second quarter of 2014, but investor interest in industrial and multifamily buildings remained strong, with year-to-date volume in both these categories increasing almost 16 per cent compared to last year. The office sector showed the greatest drop, dropping 66 per cent compared to the first three quarters of 2019 and by 72 per cent compared to the third quarter of 2019. At only $47 million in transactions, it was the lowest total dollar volume since the beginning of 2010. Residential land deals are also under pressure, with year-todate totals down by 24 per cent compared to 2019 as many developers seem more comfortable holding cash than land.
One notable sale in this category included the $40 million sale of residential land at 495 West 41st Avenue, at 41st Avenue and Cambie Street across from the massive Oakridge redevelopment site. It used to be an Esso gas station and was last sold in 2014 to Coromandel Properties, which bought it for $15.8 million. The new buyer is the PCI Group. The largest industrial sale involved a 200,000-plus-squarefoot, Port Coquitlam warehouse and distribution centre on Coast Meridian Road. It was sold in a share sale deal for a reported $51.3 million. The largest deal in the industrial, commercial, investment land category was the sale of a site at 473-475 Hastings and 398 Richards in Gastown. It was sold for $31.25 million. Altus said that while there was a loss of momentum in the third quarter, Vancouver remained a market where there is more buyers than sellers and it is among the top three markets in Canada for investors.

Hyundai Elantra wins prestigious 2021 North American Car of the Year™ MARKHAM, ON: The 2021 Hyundai Elantra was recently named winner of the 2021 North American Car of the Year award today by the North American Car, Utility and Truck of the Year (NACTOY) automotive media jury. This is the second time the Hyundai sedan has won Car of the Year (2012). Only two cars have won the award more than once (Chevrolet Corvette and Honda Civic) and this marks Hyundai’s third Car of the Year category win. The winner was announced during a virtual event. “Thank you to all of the jurors. I am honored to accept this award on behalf of the entire company, our Alabama and Ulsan plant employees who build Elantra and our
dealers,” said José Muñoz, Global Chief Operating Officer of Hyundai Motor Company, president and CEO, Hyundai Motor North America and Hyundai Motor America. “Elantra is a symbol of our blend of dynamic design, advanced technology and great fuel economy. Elantra customers are going to experience all of the hard work and dedication that went into making this class-leading
car.” The jurors, which includes eight Canadians, tested and evaluated more than 40 new vehicles before voting the top three cars, utility vehicles and trucks to be 2021 finalists. The Nissan Sentra and Genesis G80 were the other car finalists. The sonata drew praise for its dramatic four-door-coupe look comes to life with “Parametric Dynamics” design theme, and Segment-first wireless Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ Also valued was the better than 4.7 l/100km estimated combined fuel economy rating on first-ever Elantra Hybrid and the Elantra N and Elantra N Line performance models
recently added to the N Line family. Now in their 28th year, the NACTOY awards are selected through a series of three separate votes by a diverse jury of automotive journalists from numerous outlets in the United States and Canada. Jurors evaluate the finalists based on segment leadership, innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value for the dollar. Founded in 1994, these awards are the longestrunning new-vehicle awards not associated with a single publication, website, and radio or television station. Because of the jurors’ independence, these awards are among the most respected in the industry.
All-New Ford Mustang Mach- With Intelligent Range Feature DEARBORN, Mich: For electric vehicle owners, Ford understands that taking the guesswork out of when and where to re-charge helps build trust and provide peace of mind. That’s why the all-new Mustang Mach-E comes equipped with a feature to help more accurately predict how much range drivers have left, becoming more precise over time. Mustang Mach-E’s innovative Intelligent Range can accurately estimate how much range the all-electric SUV has left, helping reduce anxiety about when and where customers can recharge. Intelligent Range will calculate range based on past driver behavior and forecasted weather conditions – taking advantage of the cloud to predict how much energy will be used in future driving. The vehicle battery system reports how much energy is available, while the powertrain module tracks of the Nissan NEXT transformation plan. More than just vehicles – Nissan NEXT is creating a stronger, more sustainable Nissan, providing vehicles and services that exceed customer expectations.” In its second year of the eighth generation, the Canadian Sentra offers a compelling proposition for the base model - Sentra S 6MT - with heated front seats and heated exterior mirrors now fitted as standard. Those looking for a more connected drive have the option of a six-speed manual transmis-
how much energy is being used. Warmer or colder weather can impact range, so Intelligent Range takes that into consideration, too, updating estimated range along the way. Crowdsourced data from other connected Ford electric vehicles who choose to share information on the road can improve estimates considerably. The all-electric SUV can track how much energy is used in different
sion on the sporty Sentra SR model, previously only available on the Sentra S.
circumstances, including varying speed, terrain and climate conditions, so it can use fleet averages across all Mustang Mach-Es to improve range estimates – even for routes and conditions an individual customer has never driven before. If range is impacted notably by any number of factors at the start of a trip, customers will receive a notification in their cluster highlighting the new range estimate and details about why the estimate changed. In case a Mustang Mach-E does run out of charge, the Ford Roadside Assistance program will tow customers free of charge to where they want within 25 km – whether that be their home, the nearest public charger or an EV-certified Ford dealership. If a customer’s home, the nearest charge station or dealership is more than 25 km away, they will be taken to the closest loca-
tion available. Ford will upgrade Intelligent Range through over-the-air updates, designed to deliver even more accurate prediction capabilities for connected Mustang Mach-E, keeping their fully electric SUVs at the forefront of technology. A future update will allow Mustang Mach-E to take even more advantage of cloud-connected capabilities, enabling it to factor in real-time traffic conditions, road slope, the terrain and elevation of a given route, and even the temperature at their final destination. *Roadside assistance is included for certain owners and available to everyone for a perservice fee. **Actual range varies with conditions such as external elements, driving behaviors, vehicle maintenance, lithium-ion battery age and state of health.
Additional enhancements for the 2021 model year include the addition of standard Apple CarPlay® integration and Android Auto™ and NissanConnect® on all grades (previously available only on SV and SR grades), and a new two-tone paint combination – Electric Blue Metallic with Black roof for the SR grade. The awards are intended to recognize the most outstanding new vehicles of the year. These vehicles are benchmarks in their segments based on factors including in-
novation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value for the dollar. The organization gives out three awards. They are: “North American Car of the Year™,” “North American Truck of the Year™,” and the “North American Utility Vehicle of the Year™.” The awards are unique because they are given by an independent jury of automotive journalists from the United States and Canada instead of being given by a single publication, website, radio or television station.

Ahead of meeting, farmers’ unions reject government proposal to suspend laws for 1.5 years New Delhi: Protesting farm unions have rejected the Centre’s proposal to suspend the three farm reform laws for one and a half years. They intend to continue their agitation until the three laws are repealed, and a legislation guaranteeing minimum support prices for all farmers is enacted. The decision was taken after a tumultuous five-hour meeting of the full general body of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), a joint front representing about 500 protesting groups, at the Singhu protest site on the Delhi-Haryana border on Thursday evening. The Congress slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and asked him to wake up. “Modiji, the farmers of country have woken up when will you wake up? The deaths of 146 farmers will not go in vain. Farmer organisation rejecting the government’s offer is the bugle of their waking up. Don’t say that we didn’t warn you, Congress General Secretary and national spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said in a tweet. After the tenth round of talks with the farmer leaders on Wednesday, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said that the government had suggested deferring the laws for one and a half years so that the farmer unions could consider them and resolve the issue by forming a committee with government representatives and farmers. Tomar said, “If organisations have reservations about these laws or you want to suggest something, we are always ready to discuss those points with you. He said
Farmers’ leaders from Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh before their meeting with the union agriculture minister in New Delhi on Wednesday. that apart from repealing the laws, these provisions can be resolved by discussing them point by point. He said: “Due to the lack of discussion on other options in the previous meetings, no meaningful result was achieved. We urge to make the discussion meaningful. Keeping up the pressure, the unions reiterated their plan to conduct a tractor parade inside the capital on Republic Day, despite police opposition. “In the meeting held with the police officials [on Thursday morning], the police requested not to conduct the parade in Delhi, while the farmers restated their plan about doing the parade on the outer ring road of Delhi, said the SKM statement. In fact, Punjab unions conducted a rehearsal on Thursday, with more than 15,000 tractors taking part in 16 districts across the state, according to Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ugrahan) state secretary Sukhdev Singh. Noting that 147 farmers have died during the protest so far, the SKM said that “their sacrifice will
not go in vain and we will not go back without the repealing of these farm laws. Tens of thousands of farmers have been protesting on the borders of Delhi for almost two months now. After nine rounds of talks ended in stalemate, the Centre offered a partial concession during the tenth round on Thursday, saying that the laws could be kept in abeyance for 18 months while dialogue continued in a joint committee. Unions had said they would consider the proposal. According to some union leaders who did not wish to be named, during the SKM meeting, a suggestion was made to submit a counter offer asking for suspension of the farm laws for a longer period of four to five years, rather than an outright rejection of the Centre’s offer. However, this was not acceptable to the whole group, they said. “Suspension is not the same as repeal. Our demand has always been that the laws should be repealed, said Rakesh Tikait, who

heads one faction of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), adding that even a longer suspension would not be acceptable. “Suspending the laws for a year or for a year and a half would cost the farmers dearly and the sword will keep hanging over their heads in the same way, said BKU-Ekta Ugrahan secretary Shingara Singh Mann. “The farmers have decided that this offer to keep the laws pending for 18 months is just a ruse and a ploy. They are basically telling us, you go away from here, stop this agitation. And therefore we feel there must be some strength in this agitation, some truth in this agitation, some value in this agitation. Why should we give it up? We are not in any hurry, said Avik Saha, convenor of the Jai Kisan Andolan. “If the opponent believes in their own position, they would not have given up, just as the farmers are not giving up... The more the government gives in, the stronger will be our belief, he added.

Government says it will not repeal farm laws, farmers will continue protest New Delhi (IANS): The deadlock between the farmers’ leaders and the government over the three farm laws seems to continue as the 11th round of talks on Friday at Vigyan Bhawan lasted till lunch only and ended without a solution. No date for the next round of talks has been decided yet and the meeting will be held whenever farmer leaders are ready for a dialogue on the proposal given by the government in the 10th round of talks, on January 20. The ministers came to the hall for five min-
utes after lunch but no discussion happened. Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar clearly refused to repeal the laws, while farmers’ leaders said that they will continue their protest. Farmer leader Shiv Kumar Kakka told IANS that Friday’s meeting was very disappointing. “At lunch, the ministers asked us to discuss the issues among ourselves and left. We kept waiting for them for more than two hours after lunch and later the meeting was called off.” Another leader Harpreet Singh said the dis-
cussion was held for only 20-25 minutes before lunch. “When the ministers came back after lunch, they asked us to rethink about rejecting the government’s proposal to suspend the new farm laws for one and half years. Apart from this, the government cannot do anything. After this, they left.” Farmers’ leader Balwant Singh said the stalemate continues after Friday’s meeting as the government has clearly refused to repeal the laws while the farmers have said that they will continue the protest. “The Union Agriculture Minister said that consid-
er the proposal that we have given as we don’t have a better proposal than this. If you (farmers) have any proposal, then tell us, the government will consider it.” On the other hand, Tomar told farmers, “The government is thankful for your cooperation. There is no problem with the laws. Considering your demands, we had made a proposal for you but you couldn’t arrive at any decision. We will discuss it again but as of now no date is confirmed for a future meeting.”
Right to Information reply exposes Centre’s ‘lies’ on farm laws: Amarinder Singh Chandigarh (IANS): With a Right to Information (RIT) response exposing the Centre’s claim on the farm laws having been approved by the highpowered committee on agricultural reforms, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Wednesday said it was now obvious that the Akalis and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had been spreading lies at the behest of the Central government. Media reports citing a reply by the Planning Commission to an RTI query suggest that the farm ordinances were promulgated and introduced in Parliament in June 2020 without the report
of the chief ministers’ committee being ever appraised by the Governing Council of NITI Aayog, a policy think tank of the Government of India. This, said the Punjab Chief Minister, was in stark contrast to the claims of the Central government, which both Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and AAP had been parroting in an apparent bid to promote the BHP’s anti-farmer agenda. Union Minister of State for Food Danve Raosaheb Dadarao had claimed before the Lok Sabha that the high-powered committee had approved the Essential Commodities (Amendment)
Amarinedr Singh Bill, which Amarinder Singh had categorically rejected and which has now been proved wrong by the RTI reply. Far from basing the farm laws on the discussions and decisions of the committee, the
fact, as validated by the RTI response, was that the committee report had not even been placed till now before the Governing Council of the NITI Aayog, Amarinder Singh pointed out. Once the report is made public, everyone will now know who said what in the committee meetings, where Punjab was not even a part in the first one, while the second discussed some financial issues with state Finance Minister Manpreet Badal in attendance and the third was only participated in by secretary-level officials, he added. The Chief Minister lam-
basted the Punjab opposition parties over their campaign of lies, deception and misinformation to promote their collective agenda of instigating the people against the democratically elected Congress government in the state. “Their bundle of lies have been completely exposed by the RTI response,” he added, slamming the BJP, the SAD and AAP for misleading the nation on such a sensitive issue which had triggered massive unrest and had the potential of disturbing the peace of his state and the country. Lashing out at former Union
minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal for questioning Rahul Gandhi on the basis of this false propaganda, the Chief Minister said the extent of the SAD leader’s shamelessness was evident from the fact that she continued to spread the ‘lies’ even after the RTI response was extensively published in the media. Dubbing the SAD as a fake champion of the farmers, the Chief Minister said unlike the Akalis, who had been playing double games on the farm laws’ issue, Rahul and the entire Congress had been steadfastly fighting for their rights from the outset.
Arm-twisting tactics won’t work, Punjab Chief Minister again warns Centre Chandigarh (IANS): Condemning the National Investigation Agency (NIA) notices issued to several farmers and their supporters amid the antifarm laws agitation, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Monday said such arm-twisting tactics will not weaken the resolve of the farmers fighting for their rights and future. “Do these farmers look like secessionists and terrorists?” asked the Chief Minister, slamming the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government at the Centre for resorting to ‘such reprehensible and oppressive tactics in their desperation to undermine the peacefully protesting farmers’ fighting spirit’. But these measures will not succeed in destroying the resolve of the farmers, rather the Centre
will only end up provoking them into stronger reaction, he said, questioning the intent of the Government of India, which he said seemed bent on pushing the farmers over the edge through such intimidatory tactics. Amarinder Singh warned that BJP’s most powerful minds will not be able to control the situation if things get irretrievably out of hand. Instead of resolving the crisis triggered by the draconian legislations, the BJP-led Central government was resorting to victimisation and harassment of the protesting farmers and their supporters, the Chief Minister pointed out, dubbing it a regressive step that would lead to further hardening of the farmers’ stance. It was obvious, said the Chief Minister, that the
BJP government neither cared for the farmers and their concerns, nor understood their psyche. “Punjabis are fighters by nature, they are imbued with the fighting spirit which makes them among the best warriors in the world,” he said, adding that the Centre’s coercive actions will only provoke the farmers from Punjab to react negatively. Amarinder Singh expressed shock over the Centre’s unrelenting opposition to the farmers’ genuine and justified demands and its total failure to empathise with the cause and concerns of the farmers who have been braving the record cold of Delhi, with many of them succumbing to the harsh weather and prolonged exposure. Not only had the Centre been adamant in their refusal to repeal the contentious farm laws, it was
actively and shamelessly indulging in strong-arm tactics to suppress the voice of the farmers, he said, pointing to the income tax notices issued to several big ‘arhtiyas’ of Punjab about a month ago and now the NIA notices that were clearly aimed at pressurising the farmers into withdrawing their stir. These stooping to low-level actions will not suppress the voice of the farmers, or those millions of Indians who are supporting the ‘annadaatas’ in their battle for survival, said the Chief Minister, adding that if the Central government had any shame left it should immediately withdraw the farm laws and sit down across the table with all the stakeholders, especially the farmers, to usher in an era of genuine agricultural reforms.

Farmers’ tractor rally ‘rehearsal’ held in Gurugram
Gurugram (IANS): The Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) in Gurugram conducted a tractor rally ‘rehearsal’ in Gurugram on Wednesday ahead of Republic Day, in support of the farmers’ protests against the three farm laws. SKM president Chaudhary Santokh Singh, farmers and other members of the Morcha participated in the event. Singh said hundreds of tractors and other vehicles which had affixed the national flag on their vehicles started their journey at 12 noon and covered major stretches of the city. “The tractor rally rehearsal started from the Bajghera flyover and later moved towards Palam Vihar Road, Sheetla Mata Road, Atul Kataria Chowk and Maharana Pratap Chowk.
The rally covered around 12 kms in the city,” Singh said. However, when the tractor rally cavalcade reached the Maharana Pratap Chowk the police personnel stationed
at the chowk stopped the tractor rally by erecting barricades at the location as the farmers wanted to go on the Delhi-Jaipur expressway. “We had asked the police the reason
behind the stoppage but they didn’t give us a satisfactory reply. Later the protesting farmers sat on the road and sang the national anthem with the national flag but the police force were strict and did not allow farmers to proceed further. This led to some tension between the protesting farmers and the police,” Singh added. The SKM president also asserted that stopping the tricolour journey is an insult to the entire country. “This is a dark day in the history of independent India. Who has given the right to the police to stop the tricolour carrying farmers like this? They stopped us despite the fact that we had sought all necessary permission from the district administration,” he
fumed. The tractor rally disrupted traffic movement inside the city on different stretches. Extra traffic police personnel were also deployed by the Gurugram Police to control traffic movement on the tractor rally route. Traffic movement was also disrupted at Maharana Pratap Chowk due to the farmers’ protest but later the traffic was smooth. “The central government must roll back the black farms law at any cost. The tractor rally rehearsal was supported across the city. Which means the public have known about the wrongdoing of the government. A mass tractor rally will be conducted on Republic Day,” the SKM chief said.
Don’t call committee biased, resolve farm laws deadlock: Supreme Court New Delhi (IANS): The Supreme Court on Wednesday did not leave any stone unturned to persuade the farmer unions, agitating against the three farm laws, to talk to the courtappointed committee to resolve the deadlock. A bench headed by Chief Justice S. A. Bobde and comprising Justices A. S Bopanna and V. Ramasubramanian slammed the barrage of criticism unleashed at the committee members for having expressed views on the three farm laws. “You people unthinkingly cast aspersions on people, someone expressed some opinion in the past, and you find them unqualified,” the Chief Justice told counsel appearing for Kisan
Mahapanchayat, which sought modification of its order January 12, naming the members on the committee. The farmers union sought replacement of the existing members, who are perceived pro-farm laws, with persons, who have independent thoughts and views on the laws. Irked by this criticism, the Chief Justice said: “People should have opinions. Even best judges have opinions, you cannot brand someone like this... a judge can change opinion within hearing. It is a cultural thing: branding people who you don’t want and criticising them like this.” The bench stressed that its committee has not been given power of adjudication, then what is the issue.
“We gave powers to listen and report back to us. Where is the question of bias here,” said the Chief Justice. The bench emphasised that it is wrong to brand people and then malign them, insisting that aspersions should not be cast on the committee. The Chief Justice added: “We were told this is not a case for us to adjudication, we entered for common people. Don’t brand people like that. We are adjudicating a dispute.” Kisan Mahapanchayat’s counsel, citing media reports, had said that the perception is created that members favour the farm laws. The bench told the counsel of farmer union that it has serious objection if the committee is termed biased and
prejudiced, and cited that the members on the committee are brilliant minds in agriculture today. As the Chief Justice also asked agitating farmer unions counsel to counsel the litigants to resolve the dispute peacefully, advocate Prashant Bhushan, representing the eight farmer unions along with Dushyant Dave, asked: “What happens if the top court were to eventually uphold the validity of the laws?” The Chief Justice replied: “If we uphold the law, then start the agitation, counsel them (farmers) appropriately.” He reiterated that adjudicatory power has not been conferred on the committee, and its role is to share
the grievances of parties impacted by laws. Bhushan and Dave jointly stated that since the farmers’ unions represented by them have already decided not to participate in the deliberations of any committee, they have nothing to say on the instant application seeking modification of top court order passed on January 12. The top court has scheduled the matter for further hearing after two weeks. Thousands of farmers are agitating against the three farm laws at various Delhi border since November end. The top court stayed the implementation of the three laws on January and constituted a four-member committee to hear farmers grievances.
Become serious about crimes in Bihar, Paswan tells Chief Minister Patna (IANS): In a remark that is likely to rile the ruling Janata DalUnited in Bihar, Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) chief Chirag Paswan on Wednesday hit out at Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and advised him to “become serious about frequent crimes reported in Bihar”. “Nitish Kumar is the Chief Minister
for the last 16 years. He is also in charge of the Home Department, but is unable to prevent crimes in Bihar. Now, it’s time for Nitish Kumar to become serious and take actions against criminals,” the LJP leader said. Paswan visited Pakri village in Kajra police station jurisdiction in
Muzaffarpur district to meet the family of Ronojit Paswan alias John, a former district chief of the Bhim Army. Ronojit was killed a week ago by some assailants in the village. An FIR was registered against the accused. “A high-profile murder of (IndiGo Manager) Rupesh Kumar Singh

Biopic on centenarian marathoner Fauja Singh Chandigarh (IANS): Centenarian marathon runner Fauja Singh’s biography ‘Turbaned Tornado’, authored by Chandigarh-based Khushwant Singh, is all set to become a biopic. On Thursday, Aleya Motion Magic, ThinkInk Picturez, and Blue Lotus Creative announced they were adapting ‘Turbaned Tornado’, biography of the iconic marathon runner Fauja Singh, into a biopic. The movie will be titled ‘Fauja’ and directed by well-known director Omung Kumar B. A story that necessitated the collaboration of three creative powerhouses, namely Omung Kumar B., Raaj Shaandilyaa, and Kunal Shivdasani, is now all set to see the light of day. Pooling their individual sensibilities together, the three filmmakers announced ‘Fauja’ based on the book ‘Turbaned Tornado’ written by Khushwant Singh and published
by Rupa Publications on the real life story of the 109-year-old Fauja Singh (better known as the Sikh Superman), who stunned the world with his age-defying energy by shattering world records as a marathon runner. The biopic is touted to inspire generations with an amazing story that captures his fascinating journey over the decades.
With soul-stirring dramas such as Mary Kom and Sarbjit to his credit, director and producer Omung Kumar said in a statement, “The story of Fauja Singh depicts the insurmountable odds stacked against him and what sheer power of will can make of someone who is challenged medically, by age and by society. The biography of Fauja Singh was released in July 2011 in the House of Lords, London. ‘Turbaned Tornado’ will be the second book of Chandigarh-based author Khushwant Singh, which will be adapted into a movie. Last year, Guneet Monga, famed producer of films like ‘Lunch Box’ and ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’, had announced adaptation of Khushwant Singh’s novel ‘Maharaja in Denims’ for a movie. Khushwant Singh, who is currently
the State Information Commissioner, Punjab, has also written the authorised biography of Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh. The biography was a bestseller. Author Khushwant Singh told IANS, “I’m humbled and honoured as this is my second book that is being adapted for a movie. “Fauja Singh’s incredible story has to be brought out before the world to highlight the thinking, toil and determination of the man. I am absolutely delighted to be associated with this project in the creative capacity. Producer Kunal Shivdasani of Aleya Motion Magic said: “It is a beautiful story about a man whose life takes him on an epic journey making him a world icon as he discovers his passion for running marathons; eventually that guided him to make an impact on the world by bringing about a change to humanity.
“Omung is a dear friend and we share the same vision for the film, he has helmed Sarbjit and Mary Kom -two of the best and most successful biopics in the country and so having him chair the director’s role for this film was a unanimous decision. “We are very excited to offer this story to viewers, who have been deprived of cinema as we know it for quite some time. Our film intends to make the amazing journey of Fauja Singh personal to everyone watching it. Producer Raaj Shaandilyaa said, “Fauja Singh is the real king and we are all honoured to present his story in the form of a cinematic experience for the Indian diaspora world over. This story takes us on a journey through time and makes the realisation of what our grandparents have been through. It is a film that promises an instant connect.
Image of India built by Congress being destroyed by Prime Minister: Rahul Gandhi
New Delhi (IANS): Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday hit out at the Centre over the farmers’ agitation, saying that the “image of India built by the Congress is being “destroyed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Commenting on the farmers’ protests at several borders of the national capital for the last 54 days over the three farm laws, he said that “a tragedy is unfolding and the only solution to end the deadlock is to repeal the three farm laws. Addressing a press conference here at the party headquarters, Rahul Gandhi said, “India used to be a pre-eminent economy in the world. Now we are a laughingstock. We are unable to provide jobs to the youth. Farmers are protesting outside in the cold. I don’t know why Modiji thinks that it is something to be proud of. “This is something to be ashamed of. The whole world is looking and asking why lakhs of farmers are sitting outside Delhi. So, Modi is destroying the
image of India that Congress and Mahatma Gandhi built slowly and steadily, he said. “That is the reality, he said, adding that the only solution to this is to repeal the three farm laws. Slamming the government, the Congress leader said that the government believes it can tire out the farmers. “But farmers cannot be tired or fooled. They are much smarter than the Prime Minister. Only solution to end the protests is to repeal the three farm laws, he said. He also accused the government of “destroying Indian agriculture by en-
acting the three farm laws. Rahul Gandhi also launched a booklet on the three farm laws titled ‘Kheti ka Khoon’. He further said that there is a tragedy unfolding today in the country, and the government wants to ignore the issue and mislead the country. “I am not going to speak about farmers alone as it is only part of the tragedy. It’s also important for youngsters. This is not about the present but about your future, he said. “The rice and wheat that you (middle class) buy comes at the rate you purchase because of APMC (Agricultural Produce Market Committee) and the agricultural system. This is not just an assault on farmers but on the middle class and on every single youngster in the country, who is not able to get a job, he said. He said, “What we have seen in industry after industry, when it comes to the airports, telecom, power, retail, across the board, what we are watching is the development of massive monopolies.
He alleged that “three-four-five people are owning this country, and they are owning it as a small group of people who are close to the Prime Minister and have media support. “And now we have seen that the last bastion of agriculture that was not touched by industries is also going away, he said. He said that now three or four people will own the whole system and the farmers will not get their prices and the middle class will be hurt by the prices. The Congress leader said that the farmers of Punjab and Haryana are fighting on behalf of 650 million farmers of the country. “They are the patriots of the country, who are protecting livelihood of 65 crore [650 million] people. I support them, they are fighting for us, Rahul Gandhi said. To a question about China’s intrusion, Rahul Gandhi said, “China is noticing the weakness of India. China has a strategic vision as it wants to shape the
entire world. China has tested India twice. If India won’t create a strategy against China, it will take the benefit of that and then no one would be able to stop the damage. He said that the job of safeguarding the country is not being done properly. “China is testing India and it wants to dominate. I am raising red flags. You can’t manage China with event management, he said. He added that whoever speaks against the government is described as antinational or criminal. “We are saying this because we are seeing the problems. If we speak about China, we are enemies. When we are giving warning signals, we are enemies. Even if the farmers’ protest is sorted out, then its result will come from somewhere else like from youth or someone else. “Their approach is wrong. They don’t want to learn and accept. They only want to speak. It is the training by the RSS; they are top grade in this, he added.

Crowds throng gurdwaras on Guru Gobind Singh’s ‘Prakash Purb’
Chandigarh (IANS): Thousands of devotees paid obeisance at gurdwaras across Punjab, Haryana, Himachal and Chandigarh on Wednesday to commemorate the 354th birth anniversary of the 10th Sikh master, Guru Gobind Singh. Guru Gobind Singh (1666-1708) founded the ‘Khalsa Panth’ or the
community of the pure at Anandpur Sahib in 1699. Religious fervour was quite evident at ‘Harmandar Sahib’, the holiest of Sikh shrines also known as Golden Temple, in Amritsar in Punjab and other historic gurdwaras across the region as devotees began to assemble since early morning hours
to offer prayers and listen to the ‘kirtan’ or hymns set to music. The Golden Temple complex was adorned with lights to mark the occasion. A heavy rush of devotees was also seen at Takht Kesgarh Sahib Gurdwara in Anandpur Sahib town, around 85 km from here, since
early morning. It was at this place that Guru Gobind Singh founded the ‘Khalsa Panth’. Hundreds of people also offered prayers at Gurdwara Nada Sahib in Panchkula, adjoining Chandigarh, which is associated with the visit of the 10th Sikh Guru. Religious processions were taken
out at various places in the region on the eve of the Guru’s birth anniversary. Punjab Governor VP Singh Badnore and Chief Minister Amarinder Singh greeted people on the occasion and urged them to follow the Guru’s teachings and to maintain peace and harmony.
How will courts find out who is a fake baba?: Supreme Court New Delhi (IANS): The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday declined to entertain a plea seeking action against illegal ashrams run by fake “babas” across the country. A bench headed by Chief Justice S.A. Bobde and comprising Justices A. S Bopanna and V. Ramasubramanian said: “How will the court find out who is a fake baba?” As senior advocate Menaka Guruswamy, representing Dumpala Ramreddy, a resident of Secunderabad, said that the Akhil Bharatiya Akahara Parishad has prepared a list of fake babas in the country, the Chief Justice asked how they could rely on the
Yogi govt seeks transfer of petitions on ‘love jihad’ to SC Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh) (IANS): The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh has informed the Allahabad High Court that it has filed a petition before the Supreme Court, seeking the transfer of all the writ petitions, related to the recent ordinance against religious conversion, from the High Court to the Supreme Court for adjudication.
Parishad’s decision on identifying fake babas. Guruswamy replied that it is the apex body of Akaharas and traces its linage to Adi Shankara. But the bench said: “The list has been prepared without hearing them or how does this list come into force.” She cited the conviction of godman Ram Rahim, and the Chief Justice said: “All the more reason not to go to them. Why do you want the SC to intervene?” Solicitor General Tushar Mehta opposed the plea and cited the petitioner’s habeas corpus petition in the Delhi High Court seeking
custody of his daughter allegedly been kept in illegal confinement by an alleged godman. The bench observed that it does not want to disrespect any Akhara Parishad. “How can the Supreme Court enter into this realm? Court cannot look into it,” said the bench. “Menaka Guruswamy, learned senior counsel appearing for the petitioner seeks permission to withdraw this petition. Permission, as sought for, is granted. Accordingly, the writ petition is dismissed as withdrawn,” the top court said in its order. In his plea, Ramreddy said: “Though very
serious criminal cases were registered against Veerendra Dev Dixit, Asaram Bapu, Ram Rahim baba, etc..., their ashrams are still run with the help of their close associates and the authorities are not verifying the facilities available over there.” The plea urged the apex court to direct the authorities to frame guidelines in setting up of ‘ashrams’, citing rape accused Dixit, who ran ‘Adhyatmika Vishwa Vidhyalaya’ at Rohini in Delhi, where his daughter stayed for nearly five years. Following complaints from many girls, this ashram was raided by a court-appointed panel.

Yogi Adityanath Additional advocate general, Manish Goyal, representing the state government, informed the court during the hearing of a bunch of writ petitions against the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Ordinance, 2020. A division bench, comprising Chief Justice Govind Mathur and Justice Saurabh Shyam Shamshery said, “In view of the statement so given, we deem it appropriate to adjourn this petition for writ. Let this petition along with other similar petitions be listed for final hearing at this stage on January 25, 2021”. The court passed this order on a PIL (public interest litigation) filed by one Saurabh Kumar. The anti-conversion ordinance, which was enforced in November last year, has been challenged through multiple PILs and writs in the high court. The government recently approached the Supreme Court seeking the transfer of all the pending writ petitions from the Allahabad high court to the apex court. In addition to it, an application was also filed in the high court on behalf of the Association for Advocacy and Legal Initiatives through its managing trustee Tulika Srivastava to join the writ proceedings. The court allowed this application for the reasons mentioned therein, saying “The Association for Advocacy and Legal Initiatives through its Managing Trustee, Tulika Srivastava is allowed to participate in the writ proceedings as an intervenor.” The court further directed the counsel for the intervenor to supply the grounds on which she wanted to support the writ petition to additional advocate general, Manish Goyal.
