Did Calgary MP George Safe Surrey Coalition condemns Councillor Chahal lose out on a cabinet Brenda Locke’s disgraceful slander of post because of removing Surrey Police Service personnel Now deleted video compared frontline officers to Star Wars Stormtroopers and accused them of intimidation SAFE Surrey Coalition said on Wednesday that Surrey Connect and the party’s mayoral candidate Brenda Locke had just deleted a video comparing Surrey Police Service (SPS) frontline officers to evil Star Wars Stormtroopers that were “intimidating law-abiding citizens.” Complete with the “Imperial March” (Darth Vader’s theme music), Locke’s video falsely portrayed officers walking by as trying to harass protestors. However, as explained by both the Surrey Police Union and Sgt. Rick Stewart, SPS work out of two buildings beside the courthouse and were simply on their lunch break inbetween regular training sessions. Widely condemned by the public and media alike, the post has now mysteriously disappeared from all of Surrey Connect’s social media channels. These kinds of false slanderous attacks on law enforcement only serve to undermine public trust and safety, according to Surrey City Councillor Laurie Guerra. “What Brenda Locke and her party finds funny is actually a direct and disgraceful assault on the role these brave men and women play in
Laurie Guerra ensuring that our city is safe,” said Guerra. “Simply deleting the video does not preclude the disrespect that has been shown in the name of cheap politicking.” “For a party that always claims to prioritize the critical role that law enforcement plays in the quality of life enjoyed by Surrey citizens, this attack belies the rhetoric that Brenda Locke and her team have delivered for the past few years,” said the Safe Surrey Coalition which is calling for an immediate apology to these officers and a show of good faith from Surrey Connect that condemns political

his opponent’s flyer?
LIBERAL MP George Chahal (Calgary Skyview) on Tuesday tweeted: “I have accepted and paid a $500 administrative penalty, as assessed by Elections Canada, for removing a flyer from a front door on September 19, 2021.” He added: “I want to again apologize and acknowledge my mistake.” The flyer was reportedly of his opponent, Conservative candidate Jag Sahota. Chahal, who had been a Calgary city councillor since 2017, was expected to be appointed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to cabinet after his election victory. It is believed that this flyer incident prevented that from happening. On Tuesday, the Commissioner of Canada Elections’ website announced that an administrative monetary penalty (AMP) of $500 had been imposed on Chahal. Under the “key facts of violation,” the website stated: “In September 2021, the Office of the Commissioner of Canada Elections (OCCE) received multiple complaints alleging that, on the evening of September 19,

2021, George Chahal, the then Liberal Party of Canada candidate for the electoral district of Calgary Skyview, removed another candidate’s campaign flyer from a person’s porch and replaced it with his own campaign flyer. These events were recorded by video, taken with a doorbell security camera.” It said that Chahal admitted to OCCE investigators that he removed the other candidate’s campaign flyer. It added: “There are therefore reasonable grounds to believe that

Surrey Langley SkyTrain on track and ahead of schedule WHEN full funding was announced last summer for Surrey Langley SkyTrain, the City of Surrey immediately commenced landuse planning and construction to widen sections of Fraser Highway along the new SkyTrain route. This early work was done to expedite the construction of Surrey Langley SkyTrain when work begins on the rapid transit project. “The Surrey Langley SkyTrain line is already paying off dividends even before a single shovel has been put in the ground for this major rapid transit project,” said Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum on Wednesday. “As noted by Transportation Minister Rob Fleming, the completion date for Surrey Langley SkyTrain is now 2028, a full two years earlier than expected.” McCallum added: “An added bonus is the significant cost savings gained by building this project in one phase instead of two. Costs have been reduced by $500-$600 million by building Surrey Langley SkyTrain in one fell swoop. I would like to thank Minister Fleming for the priority he has placed on this long overdue project. I can assure him that the City of Surrey will continue its advanced work to help speed along the construction of Surrey Langley SkyTrain.” The 16-kilometer route will bring rapid transit to the growing com-
munities of Fleetwood, Clayton and Cloverdale. Having nearby access to rapid transit will also
benefit the expanding Campbell Heights Business Park. When completed Surrey Langley Sky-

Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum Train will take commuters from King George Station to Langley in 23 minutes. Surrey and Langley are among the fastest-growing cities in the Lower Mainland. Over the next 30 years, the City of Surrey, City of Langley, and Township of Langley are expected to * welcome more than 400,000 new residents and * create 185,000 additional jobs. This growth will place pressure on the transportation system, economy and environment. More than 79,800 people will be within reach of using the Fraser Highway line by 2030. By 2035, the daily ridership is forecasted to be 62,000 resulting from the increased land use development along the corridor. This will help reduce growth of automobile use in South of Fraser and encourage first and last mile trips by active transportation.

George Chahal was in violation of subsection 325(1) of the Act, the prohibition against preventing or impairing the transmission of an election advertising message without the consent of a person with authority to authorize its transmission.” A mitigating factor was that Chahal “provided all reasonable assistance to the Commissioner with respect
to the violation” and he and his campaign team “immediately and consistently cooperated with the OCCE investigation.” “The OCCE also applied an aggravating factor based on the circumstances. The failure for candidates to comply with the rules adopted by Parliament can contribute to a loss of public confidence in the integrity of members of the political class, which may, as a result, increase voter apathy,” the website added.
JOHN Brassard, Conservative Critic for Ethics and Accountable Government, in a statement on Tuesday said: “This is another example of a pattern of lawless behaviour by the Trudeau Liberals in order to further their own political interests. Whether it’s the trip to billionaire island, the SNC scandal, or clam-scam, the Liberals and Trudeau clearly think that the laws in this country don’t apply to them.” He added: “Canadians need to trust that those in power follow the law.
There can’t be two sets of rules, one for Trudeau and his party, and one for the rest of us. Justin Trudeau must now tell Canadians what punishment there will be for Chahal, or if this is just business as usual for a member of his caucus.” He said: “Canada’s Conservatives will continue to be a voice for those concerned about the continuous Liberal ethics violations, lawbreaking, and lack of accountability by the Trudeau government.”

Manitoba RCMP identifies members of family that perished near Canada-U.S. border MEMBERS of the family of four Indian nationals who froze to death approximately 12 metres from the US/Canada border near Emerson, Manitoba, trying to cross the border illegally into the US on January 19 have now been identified by the Manitoba RCMP as Jagdishkumar Patel, a 39-year-old male; Vaishaliben Patel, a 37-year-old female; Vihangi Patel, an 11-yearold female; and Dharmik Patel, a three-year-old male. The autopsies were completed on January 26 and the identities of the victims were confirmed. Police said that they immediately launched an extensive investigation with the Manitoba RCMP, including officers from Emerson RCMP Detachment, the Integrated Border Enforcement Team (IBET) and Major Crime Services, working in close collaboration with U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of Manitoba has confirmed that the cause of death was due to exposure. Chief Superintendent Rob Hill, Officer in Charge of Criminal Operations for the Manitoba RCMP, said in a statement: “Initially, we had identified one of the victims as a male teen. We apologize for that error but please understand that the frozen state in which the bodies were found and the clothing worn by the family made the initial identification difficult. “It is also why the process to confirm the names took an extended period of time.” He added: “The RCMP has started an extensive investigation as to how the Patel family made their way to Canada and, ultimately, to Emerson. This investigation is complex as
The Patel family. Photo: Manitoba RCMP it involves work at the provincial, national and international level. As Canada’s national police force, we are well positioned to address these complexities. “We have officers from detachments near the border, as well as Major Crimes Services and a number of Federal Policing officers all working together to gather information and advance the investigation. “We are also working closely with RCMP Liaison Officers who are stationed in New Delhi, India, and Washington, D.C. and we are in regular contact with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Homeland Security Investigations. “Further, we are speaking regularly with Indian consular officials who arrived in Winnipeg on Saturday. I want to extend my thanks to them for assisting us with the next of kin notifications earlier this morning. “What we can release at this time is that the Patel family arrived in Toronto on January 12, 2022. This was their first point of entry into

Canada. “From Toronto, the family made their way to Manitoba and eventually to Emerson on, or about, January 18. “There was no abandoned vehicle located on the Canadian side of the border – this clearly indicates that someone drove the family to the border and then left the scene. “With what we know so far of their activities in Canada, along with the arrest that occurred in the United States, we believe this to be a case of human smuggling. “Our officers with Major Crime Services and Federal Policing are looking at every aspect of their journey. This includes their travel from Toronto on January 12 to Emerson around January 18. “This is an extended period of time for a family who is unfamiliar with Canada to be travelling across the country. A part of the investigation is determining whether this travel was facilitated in some way by an individual or individuals. “It is our belief that people had interactions with the Patel family
during their stay in Canada. This can include hotel, gas station or restaurant employees. “We need anyone who had interactions with the Patel family or has information about their journey to the border to think about what they went through and to step forward. We need you to contact our Major Crime Services Tip Line at: 431-489-8551. “Any information about their time in Canada will be incredibly helpful to our investigators. “This will be a lengthy international investigation. We are looking at months and months of work ahead of us but our officers are determined to find out exactly how this tragedy occurred.” If you have any information on this investigation, call the Manitoba RCMP Major Crime Services at 431489-8551, or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477, or secure tip online at www. manitobacrimestoppers.com.
LAST Sunday (January 23), The VOICE reported on our website voiceonline.com, that the Indian Express newspaper of India reported that Dingucha village of the local administrative division of Kalol in Gandhinagar district had become the centre of attraction with police visiting a man whose family had recently travelled to Canada and who are now missing. Police and relatives say the descriptions of the missing members of the family matched those of the four individuals whose bodies were found in Canada. The Indian Express reported that people who knew the family said they had left for Canada on visitor visas on their first visit abroad. The

The Gujarati connection to the U.S. CONTINUED FROM 4 missing members had not been in touch with their relatives since Wednesday — the same day that the four bodies were found in Canada. As The VOICE had reported last week on our website on Thursday (January 20), Steve Shand, 47, of Florida, a U.S. citizen, was arrested and charged with human smuggling on January 19 by U.S. authorities. The U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) initiated a traffic stop on a white-colored, 15-passenger van driven by Shand less than one mile south of the U.S./ Canadian border in a rural area between the official ports of entry located at Lancaster, Minnesota, and Pembina, North Dakota. Law enforcement asked for identification of the two passengers in the van and determined them to be undocumented Indian nationals. While Shand and the two passengers were being transported to the Pembina Border Patrol Station in North Dakota, law enforcement encountered five additional Indian nationals approximately a quarter mile south of the Canadian border walking in the direction of where Shand was arrested. The five Indian nationals explained that they had walked across the border expecting to be picked up by someone. One of the group members was in possession of a backpack that did not belong to him. He stated he was carrying the

The backpack contained children’s clothes, a diaper, toys, and some children’s medication. Later during the day on January 19, the USBP received a report from the RCMP that four bodies were found frozen just inside the Canadian side of the international border. The dead bodies were tentatively identified as the family of four that was separated. Two of the surviving Indian nationals sustained

serious injuries and were transported to a hospital. A Gandhinagar senior administrative officer told The Indian Express, “We have not received any official communication from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) regarding the identity of the deceased people yet. The villagers have been informed of the same.” A police inspector told the newspaper: “A team did visit the village on Saturday and we have found that there is a family of five there, four of whom had gone to Canada leaving behind the sexagenarian grandfather. We have found out that he has now moved to Ahmedabad to stay with his younger brother.” Amritbhai Vakil (69), a relative of the missing family, told the Indian Express: “I visited their house on Friday and congratulated the man’s father saying that his son and daughter-in-law were about to build new lives, and there was nothing to worry. He told me that he was unable to contact them. On Saturday, I heard about the dead Indian family on TV.” WHY GUJARATIS WOULD PREFER U.S. Is Canada being used by Gujaratis (people from the Indian state of Gujarat) as a convenient way to illegally enter the U.S. by first coming here on tourist visas? It is well-known that the Gujaratis in the U.S. are a highly successful business community. For example, Wikipedia states: “Given the Gujarati propensity for business enterprise, a number of them opened shops and motels [in the U.S.]. While they may make up only around 0.1% of the population in the United States, Gujarati Americans control over 40%
Manitoba RCMP search for the missing family. Photo: Manitoba RCMP of the hospitality market in the country, for a combined net worth of over US$40 billion and employing over one million employees. Gujaratis, especially the Patidar samaj, also dominate as franchisees of fast food restaurant chains such as Subway and Dunkin’ Donuts.” With so many well-established business families from Gujarat in the U.S., their relatives and friends naturally see the U.S. as the most advantageous place for them. Wikipedia also states: “The United States has the second-largest Gujarati diaspora after Pakistan. The highest concentration of the population of over 100,000 is in the New York City Metropolitan Area alone, notably in the growing Gujarati diasporic center of India Square in Jersey City, New Jersey, and Edison in Middlesex County in Central New Jersey.”

Convoy doesn’t speak for Canadian truck drivers: NDP FEDERAL NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh on Thursday issued the following statement about the convoy of truckers opposed to cross-border COVID-19 vaccine mandates who are headed for Ottawa: “I understand people are frustrated that we’re still in this pandemic. Canadians have all sacrificed so much to keep each other safe. Like many other parents, when I hold my daughter, I think about getting through this safely so that kids can have normalcy again.
“But I’m concerned by the dangerous rhetoric we’ve seen from the convoy. I am concerned by extremist elements that are spreading misinformation and attempting to turn the convoy into a Canadian version of the terrorist attacks on the US Capitol. “That is not the Canada our children deserve to grow up in. “I am deeply disturbed by Conservative MPs supporting this convoy Jagmeet Singh Official photo
and by default adding their support to extremists who wish to subvert the democratic process, incite violence and spread misinformation about expert public health advice. “The best way out of this is to do what the vast majority of trucker drivers have already done – get vaccinated and continue to listen to public health experts. “We still have to have each other’s backs as Canadians and we all have a responsibility not to spread harmful misinformation. “To the many hardworking, re-
sponsible trucker drivers who have worked tirelessly to get Canadians through the pandemic – thank you. Canadians are indebted to you. We see you and we support you. “And, we know like many Canadians that are vaccinated, that this convoy does not speak for you. “Vaccines are the best way to ensure our health care systems and health care workers are not overwhelmed and New Democrats continue to urge Canadians to get their shot as soon as possible.”
Pandemic fatigue: 36% of Canadians struggling with mental health; 23% are ‘depressed’ ENTERING the third year of the pandemic, the picture of mental health in Canada is one of exhaustion and increasing trauma. A new study from the Angus Reid Institute finds a population largely fatigued, frustrated, and anxious – and one-in-three (36%) Canadians saying they are struggling with their mental health. This represents an increase from the one-quarter who said so in November, prior to Omicron becoming the dominant COVID-19 variant in Canada. When asked to summarize their feelings in recent weeks, half (48%) of Canadians say they’ve been feeling “fatigued,” while two-in-five (40%) say they’ve been frustrated, and another two-in-five (37%) say they’ve been feeling anxious. One-in-10 (12%) chose happy, half the number who chose depressed (23%). Overall, three-in-ten Canadians say
importance when considering additional data in this study. One-inthree Canadians (35%) say that depression and anxiety are a major problem within their social circle; another half (48%) say it’s an issue they’re exposed to. Further, for those who perceive this as a challenge for their friends and loved ones, fully two-thirds (66%) say it has worsened during the pandemic. These same trends are noted for those who perceive people in their social circle dealing with addictions and alcoholism. Angus Reid they speak regularly about their mental health with friends (30%) or family (32%), but these conversations are particularly rare among men 55 and older. Just 11 per cent in that demographic group say they talk to their friends about how they’re
feeling, while one-quarter (23%) talk to family. Women between the ages of 18 and 54 are much more likely to have this type of discourse, though fewer than half say this is a regular part of their life. These conversations take on more
More Key Findings: * Seven per cent of Canadians say they are “barely getting by” when it comes to their mental health in dealing with the pandemic, more than double the number measured at any point since October 2020. * Those in Ontario (41%) and Saskatchewan and Manitoba (39%) are
the most likely in the country to have been dealing with poor pandemicrelated mental health in recent weeks, but at least three-in-ten in all regions report feeling not good or terrible. * Three-in-10 (31%) say they or someone in their household had an appointment with a therapist, psychologist, or psychiatrist in the last year. Another three-in-10 (30%) say they’ve received a prescription to treat a mental health issue in the last 12 months. * Meanwhile, men and women over the age of 54 are about half as likely to say they or someone in their household has had an appointment with a mental health professional or called a mental health hotline as their younger counterparts. * Half (47%) of Canadians say alcohol abuse is a problem among their social circles while three-in-10 say the same of drug abuse.
Rapid tests being delivered to support B.C. child care providers THE Province announced on Wednesday that it is distributing up to 250,000 rapid antigen tests to government-funded child care providers throughout British Columbia for use by child care professionals
with COVID-19 symptoms. Rapid antigen tests are an additional tool that can be used to support health and safety in child care facilities with the aim to reduce transmission of COVID-19.
The Ministry of Health and the Office of the Provincial Health Officer continue to direct how rapid antigen tests are best used as part of the provincial pandemic response, including if additional tests will be
deployed for use in child care settings. The take-home tests will be delivered directly by the Province to Ministry of Children and Family Development-funded child care facilities
through BC Mail to reduce impact on operations for child care providers. Additional information about expected timing will be provided to child care facilities in the coming days as logistics are confirmed.

Pakistan airlines attendant ‘escapes’ from Toronto hotel New Delhi (IANS): A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight attendant has ‘escaped’ from a hotel in Toronto, Canada, Samaa TV reported.
Waqar Ahmed Jadoon was an attendant on flight PK-781 from Islamabad to Toronto, according to PIA officials. But he was not part of the crew when the plane was returning to Pakistan on Sunday. A missing person complaint has been filed with the Toronto police and disciplinary action has been initiated against him, the report said. Jadoon was in contact with other crew members till January 22, PIA spokesperson Abdullah Hafeez said. The attendant was, however, not in his room before the takeoff. Hafeez added that all crew members submit their passports to the management upon arrival in a foreign country and Jadoon’s passport is also with the airline. To prevent such cases, Hafeez said, the crew members sign an indemnity bond and one of their relatives submits an undertaking that they will not escape, the report said. However, this is not the first time a PIA flight attendant has gone missing in Canada. In the past five years, nine such cases have been reported. “One reason why these incidents happen in Canada is that it is the only country which grants asylum post-arrival,” said Hafeez. He added that this also appears to be a case of asylum.

Surrey RCMP seize two loaded guns in two days
FRONTLINE Surrey RCMP officers have taken two loaded firearms off the streets in a two-day period as a result of enforcement targeting violence associated to the drug trade. In addition to their regular call response, officers from Surrey RCMP’s frontline have stepped up their pro-active enforcement targeting street level violence. These efforts have been successful with investigations leading to seizures of toxic illicit drugs, cash and loaded firearms, said police. The first seizure was the result of an investigation that began on November 26, 2021. Frontline officers, assisted by the Surrey Community Response Unit, began an investigation of suspected drug trafficking at a residence in the 10600-block of 138 Street. After several weeks of investigation, a search warrant was obtained and on January 23. A search of the residence was conducted with the support of the Lower Mainland Emergency Response Team and the Integrated Police Dog Services. Inside the residence, police said they located and seized several
items, including a loaded shotgun, ammunition, a replica handgun, and body armour. A small quantity of cash, suspected illicit drugs and other items consistent with drug trafficking were also located. One man was arrested at the residence and was held in custody on another matter. On January 24, at 8:40 p.m., frontline officers arrested a 31-year-old male for suspected drug trafficking in the 10600-block of King George Boulevard. A search led to the seizure of a loaded handgun, a small amount of pre-packaged drugs, cash and a cellphone. The male was released pending
investigation. Both investigations are ongoing and report to BC Prosecution Services is underway. “As a police officer there is no better feeling than knowing you have taken a potentially deadly weapon out of the hands of criminals,” said Surrey RCMP Media Relations Officer, Constable Sarbjit K. Sangha. “We will continue to target criminals who perpetuate violence, and take advantage of the addictions crisis.” If you have information about suspected drug trafficking in your neighborhood, you are requested to report it to the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502.

Abacus Data poll shows how Canadians feel about Quebec’s Bill 21 A major poll conducted by Abacus Data for the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) provides more detail in how Canadians feel about Quebec’s Bill 21 – and how many Canadians feel it is a powerful voting issue. Key findings demonstrate that 40% of Canadians would be more supportive of a political
leader that came out against Bill 21. Over half of Canadians (55%) say that a party’s position on the law will impact their vote. Conservative, Liberal and NDP voters are all more likely to reward their leaders for opposing it. Furthermore, the recent firing of a teacher in Chelsea, Quebec has only intensified aware-
ness to Bill 21, with around 70% of Canadians having heard something about the incident. “Considering these results, we continue to call on the federal government to intervene in the legal challenge on Bill 21 to end second class citizenship,” said Lina El-Bakr, Quebec Advocacy Officer at the NCCM.
“This poll is further evidence of the mounting opposition to Bill 21 that has been growing among Canadians and Quebecers of good will,” says Mustafa Farooq, Chief Executive Officer of NCCM. For the link to the detailed poll results visit our website voiceonline.com
Canadian Muslims speak out about Islamophobia experiences in new Islamic Relief Canada report IN time for the fifth anniversary of the Quebec mosque shooting anniversary and the National Day of Action Against Islamophobia on January 29, Islamic Relief Canada on Thursday released a new report that sheds light on how everyday Islamophobia affects Canadian Muslims. “We often hear about Islamophobia in the context of violent attacks, but what is less known are the everyday incidents and microaggressions Muslims experience regularly in all spheres of their lives. With our report, we wanted to share those stories, and capture the
long-term effects of hate,” said Reyhana Patel, head of communications and government relations at Islamic Relief Canada. The report features stories from a wide variety of Muslims, including: * Saleha Islam, a university student in Abbotsford who had her hijab pulled at by some boys at her high school computer lab. She also shared how people have yelled out “terrorist” or called her “filthy” on the street, as well as subjecting her to misogynistic insults on a public bus. “Because of these experiences, growing
up I was very anxious … I was afraid and uncomfortable, thinking I may be attacked. I can’t lie; sometimes that fear is still there,” Saleha says. * A teacher in Quebec who was asked to remove her hijab in the workplace due to Bill 21 and almost lost her job for not complying * A man who temporarily stopped participating in organized sport in Alberta after he experienced racial slurs and discrimination Some of the key findings from the report are that Islamophobia is systemic, gendered and
normalized. The report also reveals that shortand long-term consequences for those who experience Islamophobia can include emotional and mental trauma, stress in personal and professional relationships, and even long-term physical injury. Islamic Relief Canada is calling on governments to reflect upon the gravity of Islamophobia in Canada and immediately take all necessary actions to tackle Islamophobia and its root causes. Farmers desperate for help to recover from massive flood losses: BC Liberals AS farmers await details on the provincial and federal governments’ pending AgriRecovery package, many are expressing concerns about its
potential limitations as they try to make plans to restore their operations which were devastated in last November’s floods, say the BC Liberals.
“Our farmers are distraught,” said Opposition Agriculture and Food Critic Ian Paton, MLA for Delta South, on Tuesday. “Their barns and homes

Ian Paton were filled with three to seven feet of water and they lost livestock, poultry, feed, and crops to this disaster. They also saw equipment failures and face expensive repairs because of this catastrophic flooding. They need help now, and they haven’t been encouraged by the response they’ve received so far.”
Many farmers say they have tried to apply for Disaster Financial Assistance (DFA) but have been told they technically don’t qualify for any support because their farms are incorporated and bring in more than $1 million in annual sales. With private insurance and DFA nearing exhaustion, farmers will now be keeping a close eye on the Agri-Recovery package set to be announced soon but they have a lot of questions. Paton has sent a letter to Agriculture Minister Lana Popham to try to get answers to some of their inquiries, such as: * When it comes to repairs and rebuilding, will farmers first have to find the funds to pay out of their own pockets? Or will they be able to submit estimates for repairs to get funds advanced and then
submit receipts for completed work? * Blueberry growers have received professional advice from expert horticulturalists that their plants will never return to previous production levels and must be replaced. Do government officials agree with that assessment, and will farmers be compensated if they move forward with replacing those plants? “I implore the minister to find a way to improve the eligibility criteria and ensure these farmers can get the funds they need to restore their operations, some of which have been in their families for generations,” said Paton. “If we truly value farmers and understand their business, then we cannot allow government structure to impede their recovery.”

Welcoming individuals and families from Afghanistan I want to welcome the individuals and families from Afghanistan as they embark on the next chapter of their lives in British Columbia.
BY AMAN SINGH NDP MLA for Richmond-Queensborough ON January 19, British Columbians welcomed over 200 Afghan refugees arriving at the Vancouver International Airport. It is so inspiring to see how our community has opened their hearts to welcome our newest neighbours. The refugees were greeted by the Community Airport Newcomers Network with support from S.U.C.C.E.S.S, a non-profit organization. The network provides winter clothing, arranges transportation, and offers initial orientation to newcomers and their families. Over the next few weeks, newcomers will receive support from Immigration Services Society of British Columbia (ISSofBC), a settlement service provider that helps refugees find temporary and permanent housing, provides them with information about finding work, and helps newcomers in improving their language skills and adjusting to life in Canada. I want to say a big thank you to these organizations for their ongoing work to help newcomers adjust to life here in B.C. Our government’s priority is ensuring every newcomer to the province has access to the services and supports they need to help them thrive. This includes access to career services, as well as trauma counselling. In recognition of the severity of the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, we announced a $2-million Refugee Readiness Fund in November to help Afghan refugees feel welcome and safe as they adjust to their new life. This fund is a one-time investment that complements existing provincial and federal support services for refugees, recognizing that additional supports may be needed as more Afghan families and individuals arrive in the coming years. Many of these newcomers will settle in Metro Vancouver, and in other communities, such

Richmond shooting was apparently a murder-suicide: IHIT THE Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) on Friday announced that the four victims of the shooting deaths in a Richmond residence in the 4500-block of Garden City Road on January 24 are from a single family and consist of a 71-year-old father, 58-yearold mother, and two adult children aged 23 and 21. The extended family have requested privacy and so the names are not being released. IHIT said investigators are confirming that this does not appear to be an incident of partner violence. At this stage, preliminary findings suggest that one of the family members was the shooter. IHIT said investigators have followed the evidence, starting with a search warrant without presumptions on motive or responsibility. At this time, evidence uncovered suggests this was a murder-suicide; however, final confirmation is not possible until ballistics are analyzed and autopsies are

Parks licence plates drive improvements for BC Parks THE BC Parks Licence Plate Program is marking its five-year anniversary, and more than 300 diverse projects and programs have been supported to further protect and enhance B.C.’s world-renowned parks system. People with specialty BC Parks licence plates are supporting student rangers and many other initiatives that help parks in a variety of ways, such as purchasing adaptive outdoor recreation equipment so more people can enjoy the outdoors and planting thousands of whitebark pine seedlings to restore the endangered species. “It is very gratifying to see such broad support for our BC Parks Licence Plate Program. People are happily taking meaningful actions to protect and preserve the rich natural legacy of our province,” said George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy, on Wednesday. “The licence plate program has had an incredible impact on our parks right across the province by contributing to the protection and preservation of unique species, sensitive ecosystems, Indigenous culture and history. I love seeing the parks plates becoming increasingly common.” During the past five years, more than 300,000 speciality BC Parks licence plates have been sold, generating more than $20 million in total revenue for the program, including funding for projects in conservation, Indigenous reconciliation, engagement, education and inclusion, as well as fire-based ecosystem
and land management. The projects have involved more than 200 community partners and more than 70 First Nation partners. With more people visiting provincial parks, the Discover Parks Ambassador Program is becoming increasingly important and is an example of the many projects supported by the licence plate program. Piloted in 2020 through a partnership between BC Parks and the BC Parks Foundation, the ambassadors can be seen in parks throughout the province, connecting people with nature and providing education about how to be safe and responsible in the outdoors. “British Columbians’ love for parks and support for the licence plate program comes back to them through the discover parks ambassadors,” said Andy Day, CEO, BC Parks Foundation. “These are great jobs for young people who are making visitor experiences better, building pride and stewardship in parks and helping reduce litter, safety incidents and human-wildlife conflicts. It’s a great win all around.” At Cultus Lake Provincial Park, BC Parks has partnered with the Fraser Valley Invasive
Species Society to control invasive plants and work toward restoring an important conservation area for the Oregon forestsnail, which has a significant impact on the overall health of the forest ecosystem. The Maple Bay camping and day-use area in the park provides valuable habitat for the threatened species, but invasive plants and past recreational activities are affecting that habitat. To restore the area as prime snail habitat, the society plans to remove infestations of invasive plants, replant native species, including stinging nettle, and place woody debris where snails can seek refuge and sleep. Volunteers from the local community have also helped remove invasive plants. “The Fraser Valley is one of the last remaining areas where Oregon forestsnails exist. Unfortunately, over the years Maple Bay has been a site where garden-waste dumping and recreational activities have negatively impacted the forest understory,” said Kathy Ma Green, Executive Director, Fraser Valley Invasive Species Society. “The Fraser Valley Invasive Species Society is grateful for funding from the licence plate program, which will help remove the invasive plants and restore this important space for the snails.” Other initiatives supported by the licence plate program include youth employment through the student ranger program, wildlife inventories, Indigenous interpretive programs in parks, wildfire fuel mitigation, managing invasive species, educational
materials for children and families, and restoration of wetlands, coastal bluffs and other sensitive ecosystems. “British Columbians who purchase a BC Parks licence plate can take pride in knowing they are supporting projects that are making real improvements in our spectacular parks,” said Kelly Greene, Parliamentary Secretary for Environment. “It’s exciting to see the many partnerships with community groups and First Nations, and the resulting improved visitor experience and healthier park environments. I encourage everyone to consider a BC Parks plate when they insure their vehicle.” The licence plate program is a partnership between the Province and ICBC. Motorists can choose one of three speciality plate designs depicting scenes from B.C.’s parks and protected areas. All net proceeds from the sale and ongoing renewals of BC Parks licence plates are reinvested into provincial parks through the Park Enhancement Fund – a special account where revenues enhance programs or services in provincial parks beyond the core services provided by government. British Columbians see their assistance cheques reduced by NDP: BC Liberals THE BC Liberals say that in the fifth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, British Columbians who depend on disability and income assistanceV are seeing their cheques slashed without warning because the NDP has removed federal Employment Insurance (EI) as an income asset exemption. “The NDP said that they exempted EI as an income asset from disability and income assistance to ensure British Columbians depending on that help would have additional support during the pandemic,” said Opposition Critic for Social Development and Poverty Reduction Dan Davies.
“To retroactively remove EI as an exemption effective November 20, 2021— when the government’s own website still says it is exempt — is going to be a worrisome shock to thousands of British Columbians who could see their assistance cheques suddenly reduced this month without explanation.” The NDP government has been heavily criticized by the BC Liberal Caucus and social support advocates for its mismanagement of social assistance programs throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, including clawing back the $300 per month supplemental

Mayors’ Council seeking extension of federal pandemic relief funding for transit THE Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation is urging the Government of Canada to extend pandemic emergency funding for TransLink to help stem revenue losses of $200 million expected in 2022-23 given the ongoing impacts of the pandemic. In a formal submission to the pre-budget consultation for the 2022 federal budget, the Mayors’ Council warns that without additional relief funding from federal and provincial governments, TransLink faces difficult decisions. The COVID-19 pandemic continues to present the transit authority with significant financial challenges due to a reduction in revenues from transit fares, fuel and parking taxes. The Mayors’ Council is joining municipal leaders from other urban regions in British Columbia and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities in asking the federal government to extend emergency relief beyond the funding of $644 million provided to TransLink and $394 million to BC Transit and BC Ferries through the 2020 Safe Restart Agreement. Additional federal support will enable TransLink – working in partnership with the provincial government – to remain resilient over the next two years as transit ridership recovers to 80-90% of pre-pandemic levels. Senior government support to sustain transit
Jonathan Cote Photo: Twitter service levels through the pandemic is also critical to meeting regional and national climate targets, supporting economic recovery, providing equitable access to transportation across the region and keeping life affordable for residents. “In 2020, the B.C. Government was at the forefront securing much needed and welcome federal support for public transit in B.C. and continues to work in partnership with
the Mayors’ Council and TransLink to protect transit services.” said Mayor Jonathan Cote, Chair of the Mayors’ Council, on Wednesday. “However, as the pandemic continues to challenge all essential services, we need the federal government to recommit to additional emergency support for transit in British Columbia. If the federal government doesn’t extend this critical funding, we face making difficult decisions on service levels and future projects, or, shifting the burden of pandemic-related losses to more regressive local tax sources impacting already hard-hit businesses and residents struggling with affordability challenges.” “While TransLink’s ridership recovery is out-performing expectations and surpassing most other urban transit systems in North America, we are not immune to the ongoing challenges of the pandemic,” said TransLink CEO Kevin Quinn. “As we head towards a ‘new normal’ for transit ridership – with less revenue coming from transit fares – we will need continued support from senior governments as we work to identify alternative revenue sources.” “As the region’s Mayors, we will not leave Metro Vancouver citizens, workers, students and visitors without reliable and sustainable transportation options,” said Mayor Jack Fro-
ese, Vice Chair of the Mayors’ Council. “That is why the Mayors’ Council is calling on the federal government to continue working with us and the Government of BC to help TransLink continue running our transit system efficiently and reliably, and to keep expansion projects such as the completion of Surrey-Langley SkyTrain and our new longrange strategy, Transport 2050 on track.” TransLink’s Transport 2050 plan – which will go before the Mayors’ Council and TransLink Board of Directors on Thursday for final approval – sets out a roadmap for a future transportation network that meets the region’s goals to address climate change, social equity, and economic growth. Investment Plans developed by the Mayors’ Council with public input will continue to establish specific projects and expansion of services needed over the next 30 years to realize the vision set out in Transport 2050. “We cannot meet the demand of our growing population over the coming decades and realize the goals set out in Transport 2050 if we sacrifice the integrity of the transit system we have today,” said Cote. “What we’re asking is that the federal government continue to step up to support public transit, just like they have for other essential public services impacted by the pandemic.”
Empty Homes Tax have to be declared by February 2 in Vancouver THE City of Vancouver is reminding residential property owners that February 2 is the due date for their annual Empty Homes Tax (EHT) declaration. As of January 25, 79 per cent of owners have submitted their EHT declarations, and 40,106 still need to declare. A declaration is required for all residential properties in Vancouver, regardless of whether the owner lives in the property, or rents it out. For co-owned properties, only one declaration is required. A $250 by-law fine will apply to owners who miss the due date. Declarations can be made online at vancouver.ca/eht-declare. Background on the EHT
Who will be assessed the tax? If a declaration is not received for a property by February 2, it will be deemed vacant and assessed the tax. If a late declaration of ‘occupied’ or ‘exempt’ status is made for that property after the due date, and is verified by the City, the tax will not apply. Most owners of residential property in Van-
couver will not be required to pay the tax, as it does not apply to principal residences, properties that are rented out at least six months a year, or properties that are eligible for an exemption. Properties that are declared vacant by their owner, or deemed or determined vacant under the EHT program, will be subject to

THE Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) on Friday identified the victim of Thursday’s homicide in Coquitlam as 32-year-old Ramina Shah from Maple Ridge. IHIT said that her name and photo werere being released in an effort to identify witnesses who may have seen her around the time of the incident. At this time, this appears to be an isolated and not a random incident. On January 27, at around 4:30 p.m., Coquitlam RCMP responded to a call and found a female victim with stab injuries at a parking lot in the 1100-block of Austin Avenue. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment but despite life-saving measures, she succumbed to her wounds. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) was called in to investigate. IHIT is working with partners from the Coquitlam RCMP, the Integrated Forensic Identification Section (IFIS), and the BC Coroners Service. The scene is being examined and a canvass for witnesses and CCTV is ongoing. Homicide investigators are looking to speak to friends and associates of Shah. There is also interest in dash-cam footage from the Austin Avenue

Grenade brought into Surrey RCMP’s Guildford office disposed of safely SURREY RCMP announced at 5:49 p.m. on Thursday that the grenade brought into the Guildford RCMP office had been safely disposed of the Explosives Disposal Unit and all roads had been reopened. A member of the community had brought the grenade to the Surrey RCMP Guildford office located at 10395 148 Street at 11:39 a.m., stating that they had located the device in a park in the 16100-block on 102 Avenue and wanted to turn it over to police. Surrey RCMP said that it would be treated as a live explosive device until its functionality could be determined. Areas of
concern within the Guildford office and surrounding areas were evacuated. Explosives experts were contacted to attend and assist with safely disposing of the device. Surrey RCMP requested the public not to attend the Guildford police office until further notice and to avoid the area. Police closed 104 Avenue in both directions between 146 Street and 149 Street. “We urge the public to contact police immediately if you find a suspicious device or possible explosive,” said Media Relations Officer Constable Sarbjit K. Sangha. “Do not handle or transport it, keep your distance, and call 911.”

WSO says Canadian gurdwaras in crisis due to restrictive visa policies THE World Sikh Organization of Canada on Friday sent a letter to the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Sean Fraser, with respect to the crisis faced by Canadian gurdwaras due to restrictive visa policies which have effectively barred the entry of parcharaks (Sikh religious workers) to Canada for the past two years. Tejinder Singh Sidhu, President, WSO of Canada, states in his letter: “We are writing to you today with respect to hardships faced by Canadian gurdwaras and the Sikh community as a result of restrictive immigration policies. We have heard from gurdwaras across Canada and the message we have consistently received is that gurdwaras are severely understaffed and struggling to serve the Sikh community because of restrictive policies implemented by Citizenship & Immigration Canada as well as the High Commission of Canada staff in India. These policies have frozen the arrival of Sikh parcharaks (religious workers) into Canada for the past two years. In short, Canadian gurdwaras are currently in crisis. “With the COVID pandemic entering its third year, gurdwaras in Canada have been unable to bring Sikh parcharaks to Canada since early 2020. Many gurdwaras serving major Sikh communities such as those in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), Surrey and elsewhere have been relying on parcharaks who arrived in 2019 or
Tejinder Singh Sidhu those who have long-term Canadian visas. Some gurdwaras have no parcharaks at all. The situation is unsustainable and has resulted in severe strain on gurdwaras and the parcharaks themselves. “The Sikh community in Canada, which now numbers over 600,000 individuals, relies on gurdwaras and parcharaks to serve their spiritual needs. Throughout the pandemic, gurdwaras have been working diligently to serve their congregations and the general community by providing food, clothing, counseling, hosting COVID vaccine community clinics and providing religious services. While there have
been capacity limits and restrictions on the size of gatherings, the number of services provided has not decreased. The Sikh community still continues to rely on gurdwaras for major life events such as births, weddings and deaths. The freeze on parcharaks coming to Canada has taken a toll on the mental and physical health of those currently serving in gurdwaras, many who have not been able to return to their families for more than two years. “Canada’s largest gurdwara, Ontario Khalsa Darbar in Mississauga Ontario (OKD) reports that in 2019 it was staffed with 10 ragi jathas, eight pathis and a dhadi jatha. Today, in 2023, the numbers have dwindled to four full-time ragi jathas, two granthis/pathis and one kavishari jatha. Once again, the services provided by the gurdwara have not decreased. “Like almost all other Canadian gurdwaras, OKD has been unable to sponsor any parcharaks since early 2020. There have also been significant difficulties in communicating with the High Commission of Canada in India which has been sending emails to an out-of-date email address and also claiming in one correspondence that OKD has been unable to establish that it is a “genuine religious organization”. “Recently, the Migration Desk, Canada Consul General Chandigarh sent revised instructions to gurdwaras related to the inviting of parcharaks. The revised instructions require
gurdwaras wishing to sponsor a new religious worker to send information about the religious worker being replaced including their boarding pass or a ‘copy of their entry stamp back to India’. “This requirement would oblige gurdwaras to send parcharaks back before the processing of visas for the parcharaks coming to replace them. This will result in smaller gurdwaras being without any parcharak while waiting for the processing of new applications for the incoming individuals. If a visa request of a replacement parcharak is refused, the gurdwara will be placed in a situation where they will have to immediately search for a new parcharak. Any arriving parcharak will also need time to prepare for the visit including time to resolve their personal and family issues and also arrange their travel, which may take several weeks – a period where the gurdwara will be without any staff. “The new instructions do not appear to have been developed with any wide consultation or input from Canadian gurdwaras and will lead to significant hardships. “We call on you and your ministry to immediately work with Canadian gurdwaras to find a solution to the current crisis and ensure that sponsorship processes are optimized so that gurdwaras can continue to meet the spiritual needs of Canada’s Sikh population.”
Transport 2050 sets bright new vision for regional transportation TRANSPORT 2050 is now final after approval from the Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation and the TransLink Board of Directors, TransLink said on Thursday. Transport 2050 outlines a new long-range vision for Metro Vancouver and will guide transportation decisions for the next three decades. The newly approved Regional Transportation Strategy outlines over 100 actions or strategies to make transportation options more convenient, reliable, affordable, safe, comfortable, and environmentally sustainable. Some key actions in Transport 2050 include: * Quadrupling the rapid transit network with over 300 kilometres of new rapid transit. – This could include bus rapid transit, light rail, subway, or SkyTrain.
* Completing a connected 850-kilometre trafficseparated Major Bikeway Network to provide communities with greener and healthier transportation options. * Promoting the use of electric and shared vehicles such as bikes, scooters, and cars. Transport 2050 is a strategy for everyone in Metro Vancouver, regardless of whether you primarily drive, take transit, walk, cycle, or roll. It was built through TransLink’s largest-ever public engagement – a three-phase process that began in 2019. In that time, TransLink hosted more than 350 in-person or virtual events that resulted in over 160,000 conversations, 38,000 surveys, and 4,000 ideas. TransLink engaged directly with Indigenous Nations, urban Indigenous organizations, and

over 500 stakeholder groups in 27 different municipalities. This included input from members of the public, representatives from all levels of government, organizations representing disadvantaged communities, and numerous others throughout the Lower Mainland and surrounding areas. TransLink said it will next work together with the Mayors’ Council to develop a detailed implementation blueprint that will prioritize shorter-term action items from Transport 2050. That blueprint is projected to be released later this year. Kevin Quinn, CEO, TransLink, said: “Quality transportation is the backbone of a quality society, because how we move impacts every facet of urban life. I’m proud that Transport 2050 will
help make transportation more sustainable, reliable, convenient, safe, and affordable for decades. After the largest engagement in our history, Transport 2050 is truly a strategy created both by those and for those who call Metro Vancouver home.” Jonathan Coté, Chair, Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation, said: “In the time I’ve served as Mayors’ Council chair, previous longrange visions like Transport 2021 have influenced so many of the decisions that built what you see around you today. Transport 2050 is our new roadmap to a more livable Metro Vancouver. I’m proud that through engagement, members of the public have led this initiative from the beginning to set us on an ambitious path to a better region.”

BC Liberal MLA Teresa Wat endorses Kevin Falcon for party’s leadership TERESA Wat, BC Liberal MLA for Richmond North Centre, has endorsed Kevin Falcon to be the next BC Liberal leader. She is the 12th BC Liberal MLA to endorse Falcon. “After Tuesday night’s [BC Liberal leadership] debate, the choice became clear — Kevin Falcon is the only person ready to be the next leader of the BC Liberal Party, and the only candidate who can defeat the NDP in 2024,” said Wat. “Kevin has accomplished great things during his time in government for British Columbians. He oversaw many of the largest projects in BC history, including the Canada Line which was built in time for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics and runs right through
my riding.” Falcon served as the Deputy Premier, Minister of Finance, Minister of Health, and Minister of Transportation. She noted: “Kevin has already started the hard work of rebuilding the BC Liberal Party by engaging with members across BC, including being active in the Chinese and South Asian communities and embracing women in senior leadership roles on his team. I’m proud of the work he’s done, and that’s why I want to be a part of his team.” Falcon said: “I’m very excited to have Teresa’s endorsement and support for my leadership campaign. She is an accomTeresa Wat
plished leader in the Richmond community and has been a tremendous MLA for her constituents for the past decade. I’m looking forward to the work we’ll do together to rebuild our party and ensure we recruit a team of fantastic and diverse candidates to run for us in the next election.” Falcon has also received endorsements from BC Liberal MLAs Todd Stone, Mike Bernier, Mike Morris, Ian Paton, Trevor Halford, Karin Kirkpatrick, Greg Kyllo, Doug Clovechok, Coralee Oakes, Lorne Doerkson, and Bruce Banman, as well as former Richmond-Steveston MLA John Yap. The BC Liberal Party will vote for their new leader between February 3 and 5.
Vancouver Police investigating more than a dozen cases of scams targeting seniors since January 11 VANCOUVER Police are again warning seniors to be wary of scammers, as a number of elderly people continue to be tricked into handing over thousands in cash. Police are also asking financial institutions to watch out for seniors making unusually large withdrawals. “Vancouver Police are now investigating more than a dozen incidents since January 11 in which seniors were fooled into
thinking their loved ones have been arrested and need bail money,” said Constable Tania Visintin on Thursday. “These fraudsters are now becoming more sophisticated and creative to avoid being caught.” The most recent incident happened on Wednesday when a 73-year-old woman from South Vancouver received a call from someone posing as her granddaughter, claiming to be in jail and need-

Air India comes with over 140 aircraft but no real estate assets for Tata Sons
New Delhi (IANS): Tata Sons subsidiary Talace, which took over the managerial control of Air India on Thursday, will get more than 140 aircraft and eight logos, among other assets such as human resources. However, the transaction does not include non-core assets, including land and building, valued at Rs 14,718 crore [1 crore = 10 million], which are to be transferred to government of India’s Air India Asset Holding Limited (AIAHL). Besides, Tatas will also not get the world-famous art collection of Air India. Nevertheless, the group will get Air India’s 117 wide-body and narrow body aircraft apart from 24 aircraft of Air India Express. A significant number of these aircraft are owned by Air India. It will also get to operate these
aircraft on over 4,000 domestic and 1,800 international routes. Also, eight brand logos would be transferable to the Tatas, which they have to retail for a period of five years. As far as revenues are concerned, more than two-thirds of Air India’s consolidated revenues come from the international market. The airline is still the largest player from India
in the international market, having a strong footprint across regions like North America, Europe and Middle East, with attractive slots and bilateral rights. Additionally, Air India comes with a frequent flyer programme which has more than three million members. In terms of manpower, the conglomerate will get the total talent pool of Air India and Air
India Express, which stands at over 13,000, including permanent as well as contractual employees. Under the agreement with the Centre, no employee will be removed for one year. In the second year, if an employee has to be removed, a VRS option will be provided. The employees will be provided gratuity, provident fund and postretirement medical benefits. Financially, Tatas will retain a debt of Rs 15,300 crore. It had to pay Rs 2,700 crore to the Centre as the cash component. In addition, Tatas will need to take care of the Rs 20 crore loss per day that the company suffers. There is also a three-year business continuity clause in the agreement. Tatas would also need to maintain 51 per cent stake in the airline for at least one-year.
Congress to announce Chief Minister face in Punjab after consulting party workers: Rahul Gandhi
Chandigarh (IANS): Indicating that the Congress will go into the Punjab polls with a Chief Minister face in place, party leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday categorically said that it will announce a chief ministerial candidate after consulting the party workers. Both Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and state Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu have urged Rahul Gandhi to announce a Chief Minister face well ahead of the polls, instead of going with the collective leadership. “Both (Channi and Sidhu) have assured me that they will help whoever is named as the CM face,” said Rahul Gandhi, who kickstarted Congress’ election campaign in
Rahul Gandhi flanked by Navjot Singh Sidhu and Charanjit Singh Channi. Punjab on Thursday after paying obeisance at the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
At the same time, he said that there should be a dedicated manifesto for the women of Punjab.
Flanked by Channi and Sidhu, Rahul also paid obeisance at the Durgiana Mandir and Bhagwan Valmiki temple in Amritsar. After partaking ‘langar’ with Sidhu and Channi at the Golden Temple, Rahul Gandhi held a meeting with the party candidates with the message ‘Navi Soch, Nava Punjab’. Later, the Congress leader started the campaign by addressing a virtual rally from Jalandhar. The Congress has so far fielded 109 candidates for the 117-member Punjab Assembly that will go to the polls on February 20. The names of the remaining candidates are yet to be announced. The counting of votes will be taken up on March 10.

Trinamool likely to raise issue of governor’s ‘interference’ in Parliament
Kolkata (IANS): The ongoing tussle between West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar and the Trinamool Congress is likely to turn murkier as the ruling party is mulling to move a ‘substantive motion’ in the Parliament during the upcoming Budget Session against the ‘interference’ of Dhankhar in the running of state affairs. The ruling party might demand the removal of the Governor in the Parliament during the Budget Session starting January 31. “We have unanimously agreed that the role of the Governor in Bengal has reached unprecedented lows. He is even questioning the Chief Minister’s decision to appoint a chairperson for the Human Rights Commission. Unlike the President, the Governor is a nominated individual and the way he is attacking and questioning every move by an elected government with two-third majority in the Assembly, it seems he has been given a mandate to keep disturbing this government,” said Trinamool Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy after the

Dhankhar has accused the ruling party of “trampling” democracy and keeping the Governor’s office “in the dark” about the state government’s policies and its public expenditure. The conflict between the Governor and the state government reached a flashpoint after Dhankhar openly criticised the Trinamool regime and Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee on Tuesday. After paying tribute to B.R. Ambedkar at the Assembly premises on the occasion of National Voters’ Day on Tuesday, Dhankhar had said: “The Speaker thinks he has the licence to speak anything about the Governor. Has he become a law unto himself? I will not tolerate such indiscretion. The Speaker should not henceforth blackout the address of the Governor. If he does it, he will face the music.” “He thinks he is above the Governor. Who is the Constitutional head? Does he not know Article 168 -- the Governor is number one in the legislature, second in the House. I hope good sense pre-
vails,” Dhankhar added. The Governor also didn’t spare the Chief Minister and the ruling party, saying: “For the last two years, the Chief Minister has not replied to any information sought. The bureaucracy has to be held accountable. The bureaucracy is politically committed. Are they to follow the diktats of an individual?” On the same day, Dhankhar also wrote to the Trinamool supremo alleging that the failure of the government to furnish all the documents sought by the Governor indicates that “the state government is unable to function according to the Constitutional provisions.” In the letter dated January 25, which surfaced on Thursday after the Governor uploaded it on his Twitter handle, Dhankhar called upon Mamata Banerjee to make available at the earliest information regarding the Pegasus notification and also relating to Pandemic Purchase Enquiry, Bengal Global Business Summit, Bengal Aerotropolis Project, GTA, MAA Canteen and State Finance Commission.

New Delhi (IANS): Refusing to show leniency to a driver, who was dismissed from service for driving under the influence of alcohol, the Supreme Court has observed that just because no major accident was reported cannot be a ground to show leniency in such cases. “It was sheer good luck that the accident was not a fatal accident. It could have been a fatal accident,” a bench of Justices M.R. Shah and B.V. Nagarathna said while hearing the plea of petitioner, who caused the accident in an inebriated condition, seeking leniency on the grounds that it was a minor accident and challenging the Allahabad High Court order. The court said drunken driving and playing with the life of others is very serious misconduct. The employee Brijesh Chandra Dwivedi (since deceased) was a driver posted at the 12th Battalion, PAC at Uttar Pradesh’s Fatehpur. While he was on duty driving a truck carrying the PAC personnel from Fatehpur to Allahabad on
NEW
Kumbh Mela duty, it suffered a motor accident with a jeep. He was charged with having caused the accident while driving under the influence of alcohol. On completion of the departmental inquiry, the inquiry officer proposed punishment of dismissal, which was confirmed by the appellate authority. Feeling aggrieved and dissatisfied with the award of punishment of dismissal, the employee filed a writ petition before the Allahabad High Court, which dismissed his petition. Thereafter, he approached the apex court. During the pendency of the proceedings before the top court, the employee died and thereafter his heirs were brought on record. However, considering his 25 year long service and that he has since died, the court said that it finds that the punishment of dismissal can be said to be too harsh and may be treated as compulsory retirement.

Rebalancing India’s Foreign Policy BY ELIZABETH ROCHE SOON after taking office in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi outlined his vision for India – to transform the country into a “leading” force from a “balancing” one. Cut to 2022, some trends are clearly discernible – which show that the Modi government is rebalancing India’s foreign policy and also aligning its domestic policies to place India on the road to cementing its position as a regional leader. Whether it’s holding its own in the face off against China for almost two years along the icy Himalayan heights in Ladakh, delivering on promised development projects in partner countries within stated timelines, meeting the global demands of drugs and vaccines during the Covid-19 pandemic, committing to achieve carbon neutrality by 2070, breaking away from the talks-to-notalks-to-talks cycle with Pakistan or articulating, implementing and getting on board partners for initiatives like the International Solar Alliance or the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure – the outlines of the rebalance in India’s foreign policy are clear. Analysts have noted a new purposefulness in India’s engagement with Southeast Asia with the declaration of New Delhi’s interest in preserving freedom of navigation in the South China Sea. This has been coupled with an emphasis to become the security provider of choice to countries in the Indian Ocean region. New Delhi’s foreign policy rebalance almost coincides with two major global trends – one being a “greater caution in US power projection and an effort to correct its overextension” and the second being the rise of China. These were pointed out by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in a speech in December 2021. Add to this the churn caused by Covid-19 and the exposure of weaknesses of the current international order brought to the fore by the pandemic. Against this backdrop, there is a recognition of India as a country that provides solutions (Vaccine Maitri being an example), shaping global discourse on key matters (the UN Security Council resolution 2593 on Afghanistan passed during the Indian presidency
Elizabeth Roce of the Council in August 2021 calling on the Taliban not to use Afghan soil for terrorist activity is now accepted widely) and as a country that does not stand in the way of consensus building (India’s commitment to carbon neutrality by 2070). According to Harsh V Pant, head of the Strategic Studies Programme at New Delhibased Observer Research Foundation think tank, the rebalance or fine tuning of Indian foreign policy has been across the board. New Delhi’s “Neighbourhood First” policy – i.e., engaging all of India’s immediate neighbours in South Asia – has been adapted to factor in provocations from neighbours, Pant said. “New Delhi has understood that neighbours will provoke you, so it has worked out when to react and when not to. It has understood the need for strategic patience with neighbours. In that sense, there has been a recalibration of its approach to the neighbourhood,” he said. Ties have been upgraded with partners like Japan, while with countries like the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the Gulf region relations have been completely reworked in scale and scope. If more evidence were needed of India’s foreign policy rebalance in keeping with its regional power aspirations – a key example is the Quad (the Quadrilateral dialogue among the US, India, Australia and Japan) and India’s embrace of the Indo-Pacific, say analysts.
Though first broached by others, India is today one of the foremost proponents of the Indo-Pacific concept that sees the vast swathe of ocean and landmass extending from the west coast of the US to the eastern shores of Africa as one geo-strategic entity. With the future of the region and forthcoming contestations in the Indo-Pacific expected to be shaped by technology, it was only natural that the Quad would take note and focus on coming up with alternatives. A fact sheet issued by the Quad after an in-person meet in September 2021 “committed” the four countries to work towards fostering “an open, accessible, and secure technology ecosystem.” A more detailed statement by the Quad leaders stated that the “ways in which technology is designed, developed, governed, and used should be shaped by our shared democratic values and respect for universal human rights.” With technology expected to spur the global economy in the coming years, it was no surprise that India, in December 2021, announced US$10 billion package to incentivize companies to set up chip manufacturing and design facilities in the country. The scheme is expected to bring in investment to the tune of US$22 billion in the country and can be seen as an example of India aligning its domestic policy with its foreign policy objectives. The semiconductor policy “is an example of India attracting investments and technology in a strategic domain” in preparation for the future, said Biswajit Dhar, a professor of international trade at the New Delhi-based Jawaharlal Nehru University. The package of incentives for chip manufacturing and design was preceded by another announced in the 2021-22 annual budget with incentives of US$25 billion over a fiveyear period for 13 key sectors, to boost Indian manufacturing and exports. Two key aims of the Production Linked Incentives (PLI) packages include transforming Asia’s third largest economy into a manufacturing hub and help Indian companies to plug into global supply chains – boosting in turn the country’s GDP. “The PLI initiative is an enabler that allows
India to better participate in global value chains. One of the reasons India has not been able to exploit the free trade pacts that it has signed is that it doesn’t manufacture products that are in demand with the global value chains,” Dhar said, pointing to the PLI policy identifying strategic sectors like solar modules and drug intermediaries for the schemes. India’s renewed efforts to conclude free trade pacts with key partners like the UK, European Union and the UAE also ties in with its efforts to integrate with the global economic frameworks. “With the World Trade Organisation getting weakened and countries increasingly entering into free trade arrangements, India will be seen as being left out or losing out in the face of high tariff walls” if it does not conclude FTAs, said former foreign secretary Kanwal Sibal. “It is logical to enter into pacts with countries which with we have balanced trade or to whom we export,” he said. Another example of India rebalancing its foreign policy as a regional power is the decision to hold 2+2 talks with Russia – i.e., dialogue between Indian and Russian foreign and defence ministers. Russia has also started deliveries of the S-400 air defence system to India. The deal worth an estimated $5.4 billion for five systems was signed in 2018. The deft diplomacy in evidence post the Taliban takeover of Kabul – i.e., India mustering support from the Central Asian Republics to delay recognition for the Taliban government till it offers more security guarantees – is also a good case in point. Last but not the least is the example of the new partnership between the UAE, Israel, US and India. The raison détre of the grouping is economic cooperation including connectivity. “This is a major step that we have taken to coordinate our economic approach” in a region where India is seen as a benign power, said Sibal. Punjab’s intelligence wing at private company’s disposal, alleges Akali Dal Chandigarh (IANS): The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Thursday demanded a judicial probe into reports that the peace of the sensitive border state as well as the security of the country have been compromised by the ruling Congress by virtually placing the most crucial intelligence wing of the police at the disposal of a private company. Harcharan Bains, Principal Advisor to SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal, shared documents pertaining to the reported abuse of the state intel-
ligence wing by a private company, Movedek Politico. Bains said there are credible reports that the highest-ranked police officers of the state were asked to collaborate with the private company in intelligence gathering. The intelligence officers were asked to report not to the state Home Minister, the Home Secretary or the Director General of Police, but to Movedek Politco, Bains claimed. Bains also told the media here that this has brought about “the most
unprecedented and dangerous collapse of the law and order machinery” in the state. When the police, especially its intelligence wing, get bogged down to gather information to blackmail and arm-twist the workers and potential candidates opposed to the Chief Minister and the ruling party in Punjab, peace and communal harmony in the state is left at the mercy of God, he said. “During this time, the state witnessed a sudden upsurge in shocking in-
cidents of sacrilege, bomb blasts and other incidents of violence. The breach of the Prime Minister’s security also happened during this period only,” Bains said. He claimed that a proforma was circulated among intelligence officials, right from the highest to the lowest ranks, by the said company in which they were asked to share intelligence on the website of the company. This, he said, was a shocking compromise of the Constitutional and legal processes.
Bains said the party demands a judicial probe by a sitting judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court into this ‘sordid’ and ‘dangerous’ saga which put peace in Punjab and security of the country at stake. He said the party would also take the matter to the Election Commission as this is a grave violation of the process of free and fair polls in the state. The 117-member Punjab Assembly will go to the polls on February 20, while the counting of votes will be taken up on March 10.
Congress leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira gets bail Chandigarh (IANS): Former Punjab legislator and Congress candidate Sukhpal Singh Khaira was granted bail by Punjab and Haryana High Court on Thursday. He was arrested in connection with a money laundering case on November 11. The two-time, 57-year-old firebrand legislator was lodged in a Patiala jail. He is contesting from Bholath in Punjab’s Kapurthala district. After hearing counsels of both at length, Justice Sureshwar Thakur allowed Khaira’s plea, who moved the high court on December 13.
Earlier, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) special court rejected his bail application, observing that the investigation was going on and the applicant is an influential person who may try to interfere with the investigation. The ED claimed that he was an accomplice of drug case convicts and fake passport racketeers. Responding to granting of bail, Khaira’s advocate son Mehtab said: “We have won 50 per cent battle against false case by the ED and the BJP. Other half would be won in people’s

Sukhpal Singh Khaira court on February 20 as he is totally innocent.” The ED arrested him on November 11, 2021, under provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). On November 19, he was sent to judicial custody. Khaira, who rose to fame by defeating Akali Dal leader Bibi Jagir Kaur, the first woman to be elected SGPC president, from Bholath in
the 2007 assembly elections, had resigned from AAP citing the “dictatorial” attitude of party chief Arvind Kejriwal in January 2019 and floated his own outfit, the Punjab Ekta Party. He later re-joined the Congress. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has now pitted Bibi Jagir Kaur as the party candidate against Khaira. Earlier in March last year, the central probe agency had carried out searches at eight locations linked to Khaira in Chandigarh, and also at the property of his son-in-law in Delhi, in connection with the case. According to sources, the central probe agency has unearthed a Rs 3.5 crore [Rs 35 million] money trail in this connection. However, Khaira, who started his political career as a panchayat member from Ramgarh village in Kapurthala in 1992, had denied any wrongdoing. His counsel had said the raid was conducted because Khaira supported the farmers’ agitation.
Supreme Court grants interim protection to Majithia New Delhi (IANS): Agreeing to hear on Monday the plea filed by Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia for anticipatory bail in a drug case, the Supreme Court on Thursday directed the Punjab government not to take any coercive action against him till then while granting interim protection from arrest. He was granted three-day interim protec-
tion from arrest by the High Court of Punjab and Haryana which expired on Thursday. The Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana, after hearing the arguments, posted the further hearing of the case to January 31. Majithia, the brother-n-law of SAD chief Sukhbir Badal, is in the fray for the February 20 assembly polls from Majitha, near Amritsar.

Facing probe over Prime Minister security breach, DGP Chattopadhyaya in eye of storm again Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Director-General of Police Siddharth Chattopadhyaya, a 1986-batch IPS officer, who is facing a probe for the Prime Minister’s major security breach in Ferozepur, is again in the eye of the storm -- now for “taking orders from criminals” while working as the police chief. Leaked audio tapes of Chattopadhyaya’s purported conversation with a dismissed cop Sarabjit Singh, a proclaimed offender in the multi-crore drug racket, have put him on the spot. It is learnt that Sarabjit Singh gave ‘instructions’ to Chattopadhyaya for appointments in the name of cracking whip on drug cartels, shifting notorious prisoners and also for posting certain officials on sensitive postings to recover explosives delivered from Pakistan. Interestingly, hours before the model code of conduct for assembly elections came into force on January 8, the Congress government replaced Chattopadhyaya, who assumed additional charge as Director General of Police (DGP) on December 17 last year, with 1987-batch IPS officer Viresh Kumar Bhawra as the state’s DGP. Sensing sensitivity over the issue, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President Sukhbir Badal has sought a first information report (FIR) be registered against Chattopadhyaya for taking orders from criminals. He said the tapes proved that the DGP was working in league with drug smugglers. He said a tape had surfaced which had the DGP talking to a proclaimed offender in the Bhola drug case. “During the course of this conversation the PO instructed the DGP regarding transfer and posting of certain police officers, shifting of notorious prisoners from one jail to another and creating an illegal detention centre in Mohali,” the SAD chief said in a statement. Asserting that Chattopadhyaya’s cordial relations with drug baron Jagdish Bhola were now also out in the open, the former Deputy Chief Minister said, “It is now also clear that this police officer was working in league with drug smugglers as well as well as tainted police officers. Due action should be taken against him as per law.” Badal said now it was also clear as to why Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi had gone out of his way to appoint Chattopadhyaya as the state DGP even though he was not eligible to hold this post. “Channi is also mixed up in these illegal activities which were also proved by the huge recovery of cash and gold from his nephew’s house. It is also clear that he was privy to Chattopadhyaya’s affairs and due action should also be taken against him,” he said. Badal also questioned why Pradesh Congress President Navjot Sidhu was silent after the damming evidence against an officer who was personally chosen by him to register false cases
Padma Bhushan for late Punjabi singer Gurmeet Bawa Chandigarh (IANS): Legendary Punjabi folk singer and the first Punjabi woman artiste to sing on Doordarshan, the late Gurmeet Bawa, was on Tuesday awarded the Padma Bhushan, the nation’s third highest civilian honour. Bawa passed away on November 11, 2021, after prolonged illness at the age of 77 at her hometown Amritsar. Known for her long ‘hek’ (one breath recital) that she could hold for 45 seconds, she made her name in singing ‘Jugni’ after Alam Lohar and entertained generations with pure Punjabi music. She got married to Kirpal Bawa in 1968 and the couple had three daughters. She was bestowed with a state award by the Punjab government in 1991, Sangeet Puraskar by the Punjab Natak Akademi, the national Devi Ahilya Award by the Madhya Pradesh government in 2002 and the Shiromani Gayika Award by the Punjabi Language Department in 2008. Her passing away left a big void in the Punjabi music industry. She will always be remembered for her contribution to folk music.
in the public sphere. “This case has far-reaching consequences visa-vis the drug trade in the region. Besides the DGP and his political masters, there are a num-
ber of other black sheep who are involved in drug trafficking. They should also be identified, booked and put behind bars after a thorough probe.” he added.

Siddharth Chattopadhyaya against the top Akali leadership. “Sidhu should explain why he allowed an officer who was earlier also known to pursue personal vendettas to lead the state police and why he kept quiet about the illegal activities of Chattopadhyaya,” he asked. in efforts to realize carbon neutrality, Mazda Motor Corporation aims to popularize the use of next-generation biodiesel fuels. Mazda recently participated in Japanese races with a conventional diesel engine (Skyactiv-D 1.5) that runs on 100% bio-based fuel made from used cooking oil and microalgae fats. From 2022, Mazda will step up its efforts and participate in all rounds of the endurance race throughout the season. To achieve carbon neutrality, Mazda believes it is important to offer customers a variety of options. With this in mind, Mazda intends to expand its powertrain lineup by investing not only in conventional hybrids, diesel engine models, and EV models but also plug-in hybrid
models while promoting initiatives in renewable fuels such as nextgeneration biodiesel fuels. Next-generation biodiesel fuels, which are made from sustainable raw materials such as microalgae
fats and used cooking oil, do not compete with the human food supply, which has been an issue with existing biodiesel fuels, and because these fuels can also be used as alternatives
to diesel fuel in existing vehicles and equipment without any modification, no additional fuel supply infrastructure is required. Therefore, biodiesel fuels can be expected to play a prominent role as an excellent liquid fuel source in promoting carbon neutrality. Mazda is a member of the Hiroshima “Your Green Fuel” Project, a demonstration project in Hiroshima for popularizing and spreading the use of nextgeneration biofuels jointly run by the Hiroshima Council for Automotive Industry-AcademiaGovernment Collaboration (Hirojiren)1 as an activity of the Energy Expert Subcommittee and Euglena Co., Ltd.2 (Euglena: headquartered in Minato-ward, Tokyo, President: Mitsuru Izumo).
The project aims to establish a model for revitalizing regional areas by retaining the entire value chain of carbon neutral fuels from the manufacture and supply of raw materials through to fuel use within the Hiroshima area. In August 2020, the project confirmed that the performance of this biodiesel fuel was on a par with petroleum-based diesel fuel, and Mazda commenced using it in company cars with diesel engines. Under its corporate vision, Mazda aims to be a brand that continues to share a special bond with customers by providing cars that enrich their lives with the sheer pleasure of driving while at the same time continuing to pursue the challenge to attain carbon neutrality in 2050.

Fraser Valley real estate market sees busiest year in 100-year history SURREY, BC: Fueled by the consumer response to the COVID-19 pandemic along with historically low interest rates, total property sales in the Fraser Valley in 2021 shattered the previous annual record last set in 2016. The FVREB processed 27,692 sales its Multiple Listing Service® (MLS®) in 2021, an increase of 39.0 per cent compared 19,926 sales in 2020; and 15.5 per cent higher than 2016’s 23,974 sales. Larry Anderson, President of the Board, said, “No one could have predicted how the pandemic would impact the real estate market. Our region’s relative affordability, combined with a newfound ability to work from home and the value for housing dollar in the Fraser Valley attracted buyers in numbers like we’ve never seen. “Whether helping sellers list or helping buyers complete a sale, our Board averaged over 5,200 transactions every month. And even though our volume of new listings was also high, it just couldn’t keep up with the demand.” Year-over-year, sales of detached homes soared by 31.8 per cent in 2021 compared to 2020; townhome sales increased by 33.7 per cent and sales of apartments increased by 68.9 per cent. Anderson added, “With the rapid escalation of prices in 2021, many buyers made decisions based on economic factors, resulting in an explosion of condo sales in our region.” In 2021, the FVREB received 35,629 new listings – the second highest on record (second only to 2008 at 35,651); and 12.4 per cent more than in 2020.
Buying or Selling...
Baldev Gill, Chief Executive Officer of the Board, said, “Fraser Valley REALTORS® played an instrumental role in helping people navigate their real estate buying and selling needs, through uncharted territory. It’s the professionalism and expertise of our members who have done a remarkable job serving the interests and needs of buyers and sellers throughout a most challenging and unusual year.” In the month of December, the Board’s MLS® processed 1,808 sales, second only to December 2020’s record setting 2,086 sales. New listings in December were 1,278. By month’s end, active inventory finished at 1,957 units, 60 per cent below the 10-year average, and the lowest in 41 years. MLS® HPI Benchmark Price Activity Single Family Detached: At $1,500,000, the Benchmark price for an FVREB single-family detached home increased 3.6 per cent compared to November 2021 and increased 39.0 per cent compared to December Townhomes: At $765,800, the Benchmark price for an FVREB townhome increased 3.5 per cent compared to November 2021 and increased 32.9 per cent compared to December Apartments: At $549,200, the Benchmark price for an FVREB apartment/condo increased 3.5 per cent compared to November 2021 and increased 25.3 per cent compared to December

COMMON SENSE HEALTH – W. GIFFORD-JONES, MD AND DIANA GIFFORD-JONES

Grandma took the wrong pill
UNINTENTIONAL poisonings are on the rise. Deaths from poisoning occur at double the rate of motor vehicle deaths. It’s a heartbreaking fact that many deaths and injuries are completely avoidable, especially when young children are the victims. Yet, it may be surprising to know this: while children under age 5 account for about 40% of poison exposures requiring contact with emergency services, preventable poisoning deaths are near entirely within the adult population. Many factors are contributing to these tragedies. The opioid crisis is one of the problems. But there are other issues arising from increased isolation and the impact this is having on overall well-being, including among older adults. Changes in age, health status, and many other considerations can make adjustments to prescriptions advisable. But many older people are trying to limit potential exposure to COVID-19. This and other COVID-related issues have reduced doctor visits to review prescription medications. Northern winter is another powerful motivator for one less trip to the pharmacy. It’s placing older adults at risk of deviating from prescriptions. Prior to the pandemic, unintentional poisonings among seniors were largely due to drug interactions. A large percentage of adults over the age of 65 years are prescribed medications from 10 or more different drug classes, accounting for the majority of all adverse drug-related hospitalizations. But now there is concern about seniors engaging in intentional self-harm. Even in the best of times, older adults often experience loss of purpose. Retirement, the loss of a partner, and decline in physical health and cognitive abilities are the cause. Now, poor
mental health resulting from the unabating doldrums of the pandemic are a new cause for concern. Self-harm by poisoning should be on the radar. Past research has shown that older adults who start thinking about suicide often have relatively easy access to large quantities of potent medications. What can be done if you fear a loved one has taken the wrong medication, or if there is any other fear of poisoning? In Canada, more than 4,000 people lose their lives each year due to poisoning. In the U.S., about 6,000 people call poison control helplines every day. But an estimated 4,000 to 9,000 more don’t call for help when dealing with a poison exposure. That’s a lot of people taking potentially life-threatening problems into their own hands. Why don’t they call? Some people simply don’t like seeking help over the phone. They may be embarrassed, feel judged, or worry about scaring children who overhear the discussion. Adolescents and young adults are increasingly resistant to using the traditional technology of a phone call! Despite statistics showing increased cases of unintentional poisonings, poison control organizations report declines in call volumes over the past decade. So they are developing new options. Fully automated and interactive tools may not be the same as speaking to an expert on a helpline. But these online and downloadable resources do offer a new way to get fast assistance. One example is available at poison.org. It enables people who fear a mix up in medication to scan barcodes on products, use imprinted codes on pills, or even enter descriptions of the size, shape and colour of medications. These tools can help determine if an emergency room visit is needed. Take a look at online resources for a refresher in poisoning prevention. In addition to medication, they offer reminders about the perils of household cleaners, little batteries, and the ubiquitous hand sanitizer. Helping grandma be safe can involve keeping all these risky items out of reach of her grandchildren too.
