Driver crashes into Muslim family in ‘planned, premeditated’ attack in London, Ontario, killing four POLICE in London, Ontario, say that there is is evidence that the driver of a pick-up truck struck five pedestrians on Sunday in “a planned, premeditated” attack and that “the family was targeted because of their Muslim faith.” The truck driver, Nathaniel Veltman, 20, of London, has been charged with four counts of firstdegree murder and one count of attempted murder. The dead include a 74-year-old woman, a 46-year-old man, a 44-yearold woman and a 15-year-old girl. A nine-year-old boy sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Police say potential terrorism charges are being considered. According to one witness, Veltman “got out of the car with a military helmet and armour on.” He added: “He had a big bull bar on the front of the truck and tinted windows. It looked like he was prepared to do

Madiha Salman, 44, Talat Afzaal, 74, and Yumna Afzaal, 15. Nine-year-old Fayez Salman was the only surviving
victim. The Toronto Star reported that Salman Afzaal was registered to
work as a physiotherapist at two care homes after obtaining his degree at the University of Karachi in 1997, according to the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario. Madiha Salman was pursuing a PhD in environmental engineering, researching how to clean soils damaged by industrial chemicals, the Star said. In Pakistan, she’d been the only female student in the class of 174 civil engineering students, according to her graduate supervisor. London Police Chief Steve Williams said on Monday: “We understand that this event may cause fear and anxiety in the community and in particular the Muslim community and any community targeted by hate. I want to reassure all Londoners that all of us on the call today and many others stand with you and support you.”

Alvis Anjesh Singh, 44, is Vancouver’s homicide victim
VANCOUVER Police are investigating the city’s eighth homicide of the year, which occurred Friday night in South Vancouver. Police responded to 9-1-1 calls of shots fired across from River Front Park near Kent Avenue and Kerr Street around 10 p.m. on June 4. Alvis Anjesh Singh, 44, was found deceased in his vehicle in the area. Investigators believe the suspect’s vehicle, a silver SUV with a sun roof, drove east on Kent Avenue after the shots were heard. Police are looking for the three people who were seen inside that vehicle. Minutes later, a burnt-out SUV was found by Sexsmith Elementary School near West 59 Avenue and Ontario Street. The investigation is still in the preliminary stages, but investigators believe the burnt-out vehicle is connected to the homicide. No arrests have been made at this time.

ICBC issues second COVID-19 rebate
“Due to lower claims, we’re in a position to support our customers and bring them some extra relief” ICBC announced on Friday that it will issue a second COVID-19 rebate in recognition of lower claims costs due to fewer crashes during the COVID-19 pandemic. “We’ve been clear that any pandemic-related savings against ICBC’s bottom line will benefit customers,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General. “The good news is that ICBC is in a strong financial position to issue a second COVID-19 rebate to customers, putting more money back in the pockets of B.C. drivers.” ICBC will start distributing rebates averaging $120 per policy in midJuly, returning approximately $350 million in additional rebates to 2.94 million customers. This builds on the first COVID-19 rebate of $600 million for a total of $950 million. Most customers who had an active auto insurance policy from October 1, 2020, to March 31, 2021, will be eligible for the rebate. Exceptions include customers with shortterm, storage or distance-based
Mike Farnworth policies, whose premiums already reflect lower usage. The rebate is approximately 11% of the premium customers paid for coverage during this six-month period. “The past year and a half has been tough on all British Columbians, but they’ve been doing the right thing – including staying closer to home and driving less because of the pandemic,” said Nicolas Jimenez, President and CEO, ICBC. “Due to
lower claims, we’re in a position to support our customers and bring them some extra relief, and that’s just what we’re going to do.” ICBC received about 20% fewer crash claims than expected between October 1, 2020, and March 31, 2021, but also saw a reduction in premium revenue as customers made changes to their insurance policies, held off on getting new ones or cancelled them. The estimated impact of fewer claims is $450 million, while written premium revenue is down $100 million compared to what would normally be received for the period, resulting in net underwriting savings of about $350 million. Rebate amounts will vary between customers, depending on whether they had a vehicle insured for the full six months and how much they paid in premiums during that time. Roughly 70% of customers will get a rebate between $60 and $200. A customer with several vehicles fully insured with ICBC Basic and Optional insurance may see a high-
er value COVID-19 rebate, while a customer who has a vehicle with only Basic ICBC coverage or a vehicle that was insured for a portion of the six-month period would see a lower value rebate. For example, a customer who insured a recreational vehicle for one month may see a very low-value COVID-19 rebate of just one or two dollars. Unlike the first COVID-19 rebate, which ICBC issued by cheque and mailed to customers, the second COVID-19 rebate will be distributed based partly on how customers paid for their insurance policy. Customers who used a credit card will have their COVID-19 rebate returned to the card they used. Customers who paid by cash, debit or Autoplan payment plan will be mailed a cheque to the latest address on file with ICBC. Customers can update their address online: icbc.com (https://icbc.com) If a customer signs up for direct deposit by June 30, 2021, ICBC will deposit the rebate into their bank account.
Surrey RCMP: Please behave yourselves at Crescent Beach! SURREY RCMP are reminding the public to follow current bylaws related to the use of parks and outdoor spaces in Surrey. Crescent Beach, in particular, has been an area of concern. Residents have raised several concerns regarding fires on the beach, and unsafe driving through the neighborhood. Surrey RCMP also responded to noise complaints stemming from late night beach parties. In response to the uptick in calls for service to the Crescent Beach area, Surrey RCMP have increased patrols. On June 3, Surrey RCMP frontline officers and the Surrey RCMP Traffic Unit conducted targeted traffic enforcement that re-
sulted in approximately 300 vehicle checks with 20 violation tickets being issued for a variety of motor vehicle act offences. Also, two people were arrested for weapons offences. The public is also reminded that the Blackie Spit parking lot closes at 10 p.m. and will be locked. Last
week, a car became lodged between boulders after the driver attempted to retrieve his vehicle after hours by driving through the pedestrian walkway (see photo). Under current city bylaws, campfires are not allowed on Crescent Beach and individuals lighting fires may be subject to a $200 fine.
“Crescent Beach is a one of Surrey’s most popular attractions,” says Constable Sarbjit K. Sangha, Media Relations Officer for Surrey RCMP. “We want to ensure that individuals enjoy their time at the beach, but also ask everyone to respect area residents through abiding by current bylaws, and traffic regulations.” Pro-active patrols by Surrey RCMP in the Crescent Beach area will be ongoing throughout the summer. Anyone with more information is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502. If you wish to make an anonymous report, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222TIPS or www.solvecrime.ca.

MP Uppal ‘very concerned’ as Twitter blocks access to Canadian Punjabi singer Jazzy B’s account in India TIM Uppal, MP for Edmonton Mill Woods and former federal minister of state, has expressed concern at Twitter’s suspension of Canadian Punjabi singer Jazzy B’s account in India. Uppal tweeted: “@jazzyb is a strong voice for community related issues in Canada and around the world. Very concerned to see @ Twitter in India suspend his account.” According to techcrucnh.com, Twitter disclosed on Monday “on Lumen Database, a Harvard University project, that it took action on four accounts — including those of hip-hop artist L-Fresh the Lion and singer and song-writer Jazzy B — to comply with a legal request from the Indian government it received over the weekend.” The accounts are geo-restricted within India. An analysis by TechCrunch found that “all four accounts, like several others that the Indian government ordered to be blocked in the country earlier this year, had protested New Delhi’s agriculture reforms and some had posted other tweets that criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s seven years of governance in India.” According to The Hindu newspaper: Jaswinder Singh Bains aka JazzyB is described by his website as a “transatlantic superstar” and “the Crowned Prince of Bhangra, Born in Punjab and raised in Canada.” Hits by JazzyB include ‘Ghugian da Jorra’, ‘Dil Aah Gey Ya Tere Te’, ‘Londono Patola’, ‘Husna di Sarkar’ and ‘Naag’.” The Indian newspaper added: “He joined farmers protesting against the government’s controversial farm laws at the Singhu border in December last year and has been frequently tweeting in favour of the protests. “Sukhdeep Singh Bhogal, who is known as L-Fresh the Lion, is
an Australian hip-hop artist from Sydney, Australia. He too had tweeted in favour of farm law protestors, highlighting alleged deaths during the protests. Both artists took to Instagram to confirm that their Twitter accounts have been blocked in India.” Jazzy B reacted by writing on his Instagram account: “I will always stand for the rights of my people. #KisanMajdoorIktaZindabad #NeverForget 1984, #RaiseYourVoice.” The Hindu said that he “reposted a screenshot of his Twitter account, shared by a page, which claimed that his profile was blocked for “raising his voice for the rights of farmers and calling for justice for 1984 victims.” The 1984 anti-Sikh riots, which had broken out after
the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, had claimed 2,733 lives in Delhi alone.”
IANS reports: In a statement, a Twitter spokesperson told IANS that when it receives a valid legal request, it reviews it under both the Twitter Rules and local law. “If the content violates Twitter’s Rules, the content will be removed from the service. In all cases, we notify the account holder directly so they’re aware that we’ve received a legal order pertaining to the account,” the spokesperson said. Ahead of withholding the content, Twitter had notified the account holders so that they were aware that the action has been taken in response to a legal request from the
government of India. Earlier on Monday, amid the ongoing tussle with the IT Ministry over compliance with the new IT rules, Twitter said it has been and remains deeply committed to India, and serving the vital public conversation taking place on the service. “We have assured the Government of India that Twitter is making every effort to comply with the new Guidelines, and an overview on our progress has been duly shared. We will continue our constructive dialogue with the Indian government,” the company said in a latest statement. The Indian government has now told the micro-blogging platform that it is clear from the responses of the company that till date it has not informed about the details of the Chief Compliance Office as required under the Rules. The IT Ministry said in its last notice that the Resident Grievance Officer and Nodal Contact Person nominated by the platform are not its employees in India as required under the new rules. The platform and the Centre have been at loggerheads for quite some time. In April, Twitter pulled down at least 50 tweets at the behest of the Indian government, criticising it for the poor handling of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The data available on Lumen database showed that the microblogging platform has deleted more than 50 tweets that belonged to people like Revanth Reddy, an MP from Telangana; Moloy Ghatak, a West Bengal state minister; two filmmakers; an actor and others. In February, Twitter took a range of enforcement actions against certain Twitter accounts after the Indian government ordered it to take down more than 500 accounts for clear violations of its rules.

Our hearts break for the victims of this senseless attack CONTINUED FROM 1 London Mayor Ed Holder said in a statement: “I speak on behalf of all Londoners when I say our hearts are broken. We grieve for the family, three generations of whom are now deceased. We weep for their loved ones. We pray for the recovery of the 9-year-old boy who remains in hospital. I have ordered flags outside London City Hall lowered for three days of mourning.” Mustafa Farooq, CEO of the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM), said: “Muslims in
Canada have become all too familiar with the violence of Islamophobia, with attacks on Muslim women in Alberta, the IMO mosque killing, and the Quebec City mosque massacre. But this loss of a family, the loss of a child in our community because of Islamophobia – this is a sorrow that will run deep for a long time. But let that sorrow be the ground where we stand for justice, and stand for change.” PRIME Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted: “I’m horrified by the news from London, Ontario. To the
loved ones of those who were terrorized by yesterday’s act of hatred, we are here for you. We are also here for the child who remains in hospital – our hearts go out to you, and you will be in our thoughts as you recover.” Trudeau added: “To the Muslim community in London and to Muslims across the country, know that we stand with you. Islamophobia has no place in any of our communities. This hate is insidious and despicable – and it must stop.” FEDERAL NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said in a statement: “We send our heartfelt condolences to the relatives and community of the victims in London. “This was a hate crime that killed four members of a family and left the fifth seriously injured. Three generations among the dead were a grandmother, father, mother and teenage daughter. “Our hearts break for the victims of this senseless attack. “A Muslim family went out for a walk, like so many families and people have been doing in this pandemic, and this family didn’t make it back home because of hate. “No one should ever feel unsafe in their commu-
nity and neighbourhood. “White Supremacist extremism and Far-Right radicalisation represent a real threat and we must fight against it. I spoke to members of the Muslim community—they feel unsafe and are afraid for their loved ones. It shouldn’t be this way. “We cannot give hate any air to breathe or space to take hold. “New Democrats will keep fighting against Islamophobia and all forms of racism and discrimination so that Canadians can feel safe in their communities.” B.C. Premier John Horgan and Rachna Singh, Parliamentary Secretary for Anti-Racism Initiatives, said in a statement: “The news out of Ontario is heart-wrenching and horrific beyond words. “Four family members were killed and a young boy is fighting for his life in hospital, all because of their faith. “Make no mistake: hate kills. “Tragically, we have seen an increase in instances of Muslims being terrorized for their beliefs. They should not have to live in fear. “It takes all of our collective voices to stand in solidarity against anti-Muslim hate in any of its forms.

“We acknowledge and understand the hurt, anguish and fear many Muslim Canadians are feeling after this heinous attack. “Our thoughts are with the people mourning family members, friends and fellow community members, and with all Muslim Canadians feeling grief at this time.” THE Union of BC Indian Chiefs (UBCIC) said in a statement that it “is devastated and angered over the Islamophobic terrorist attack on June 6, 2021, that killed four members of a Muslim Pakistani family in London, Ontario and left the only survivor, a nine-year-old boy, in hospital with serious injuries.” It added: “UBCIC cannot fathom the immense grief, shock, and fear the family’s community and loved ones must be going through, and we extend our most heartfelt condolences to the London Muslim community and all who knew the family. “Through decades of fighting against systemic antiIndigenous racism and colonial violence, UBCIC is all too familiar with the blatant acts of hate, intolerance, and discrimination that seek to target, harm, and terrorize marginalized communities. UBCIC strongly condemns the premediated actions of the driver, who struck and murdered the family because of their Muslim faith, as Islamophobic, cowardly, and having no place in a country that has committed to advancing diversity, inclusion, and equity for all. UBCIC stands as a strong ally with Muslim Canadians, and we implore Canada to take the necessary steps to ensure that any act of hate and terror is labelled and prosecuted as such. Our thoughts and prayers go to the nine-year-old survivor whom we wish all the love, peace, healing, care, and justice he deserves.”
THE BC Teachers’ Federation said it was shocked and deeply saddened by the news of the hate-motivated attack on a London, Ontario family that has left four dead and a child seriously injured. “We join our Muslim members and the broader
At the anti-racism rally on Thursday at Vancouver Art Gallery. All photos on this page by Sukhwant Singh Dhillon of 600 AM Sher-E-Punjab Radio Canadian Muslim community in mourning this profound and senseless loss,” said Teri Mooring, BCTF President. “We must reject hate and stand united in the fight against Islamophobia and domestic terrorism.” Canadians have witnessed an increase in hate crimes against members of the Muslim community in recent years, including vandalism of mosques, physical and verbal attacks, and a 2017 shooting of a mosque in Quebec that killed six, the BCTF noted. “As teachers and caring professionals, in the devastating wake of these murders we must speak the truth of what happened and denounce Islamophobia and racism in all forms,” Mooring said. “Our Muslim colleagues and students are grieving, and many are scared for their own safety. It’s important for us all to take the time to reach out and let them know that they are welcome, loved, and safe in our schools.” The BCTF said it has a large collection of antiIslamophobia resources to support these conversations in classrooms, at home, and in our communities. Visit https://www.bctf.ca/SocialJustice. aspx?id=39278. THE Az-Zahraa Islamic Centre in Richmond said in a statement: “It is with heavy hearts that we extend this statement on the horrific, targeted murder of a Muslim family in London, Ontario. Our prayers go out to the entire Muslim community, and in particular, to nine-year-old Fayez Salman, whose family was killed in this Islamophobic attack. We pray for his quick and full recovery from the injuries he sustained in the attack. “As Muslims in Canada, we are well aware of the
deep-seated anti-Muslim racism and white supremacy in this country that fuels such attacks, including the Quebec City mosque shooting, the stabbing of a mosque caretaker in Toronto, and attacks against Muslim women in Alberta and across the country. These sentiments are further incited by the legislation and policies of our federal and provincial governments, as observed in Quebec’s Bill 21 banning religious symbols and the many MPs who opposed the anti-Islamophobia motion M-103. “While we continue to grieve the lives that have been taken from us, we remain resolved to continue practicing our faith despite attempts to raise fear and unrest within the Muslim community. We call upon our elected officials and community allies to take action to address the causes of systemic anti-Muslim racism, Islamophobia, and all forms of injustice against Muslims.”
extremist attack that happened in London, Ontario on Sunday June 6, 2021. Five innocent family members from three generations were intentionally and viciously mowed down by a pickup truck driven by a demented bigot. A family was destroyed – a community was terrorized – and the whole nation was left in shock and disbelief. “While we join the nation in grieving yet another horrific murder of innocent civilians, we strongly urge the government to take tangible measures to put an end to the spread of hate, intolerance, racism and Islamophobia in our country. Canada is a multicultural, diverse and inclusive nation buttressed by our globally cherished values of human liberty. We must all join hands to stand in solidarity against such blatant perpetration of violence which strikes the core that holds us together through coherence and peaceful coexistence. “Canada is one of the best countries to live in the world – a true heaven on Earth and we must work hard to maintain that reality. People from every community, faith, race, culture and religion have the right to freely live and thrive without fearing for their safety and security as also of their loved ones. We owe it to our families and our future generations. PICS Society reiterates its commitment to keep working judiciously towards building an inclusive and mutually respectful society.”

The YWCA does important work in this area and other women’s issues also. “Getting recognized by an organization like the YWCA for my efforts towards eliminating violence allows me to amplify my voice and speak up for those who are not privileged enough to be heard, and also allows me to create the space for victims and survivors to tell their stories.” Currently, Gurm’s work at NEVR, which is hosted at KPU, includes gathering feedback on changes needed to the family and criminal court systems. ACCORDING to a poll by market research and analytics company Leger:
* 66% of Canadians think the Church should bear the responsibility for the tragedies committed at residential schools, while 34% think the Government of Canada should be held responsible. (Recently, the remains of 215 Indigenous children were tragically discovered at a former Kamloops residential school site.) * 80% of Canadians are expecting more tragedies to be uncovered. They think that the remains of the 215 Indigenous children discovered at a previous residential school site in Kamloops is only the tip of the iceberg. * 77% of Canadians agree that the government should order all the grounds surrounding former residential schools in Canada to be systematically searched through digs to find out if what happened in Kamloops also happened in other places.

Canadians of Asian descent aged 18 to 34 most likely to have experienced anti-Asian racism A new Angus Reid Institute poll (in partnership with UBC) is revealing the depth and scale of anti-Asian racism in Canada and the experiences of racism in the Asian community. Key among the findings is Canadians of Asian descent aged 18 to 34 are most likely to have experienced, and been affected by, anti-Asian racism and bigotry over the last year. The study canvassed the opinions of Canadians of non-Asian and Asian ethnicity, and found that a majority (58%) of the latter group has experienced at least one of a range of situations related to anti-Asian discrimination in the last year, while more than one-in-four (28%) report exposure to these situations “all the time” or “often”. Notably, however, not all Asian Canadians have experienced the same level and intensity of bigotry over the past year. According to ARI’s Anti-Asian Discrimination Index (AADI), respondents of Asian (including Chinese) descent fall into one of three categories, the Hardest Hit (31%), the Exposed (35%) and the Unaffected (35%). Asian Canadians who are older (55+) and higher income are more likely to be among the Unaffected while the Hardest Hit are more likely to be younger (aged 1834) and lower income.
unfair treatment by institutional organizations such as local police, the health care system, banks, or the justice system * 79 per cent of non-Asian Canadians say that they view Asian Canadians as warm and friendly, while half (50%) say that they feel this group is often mistreated in Canada * That said, one-in-five non-Asian Canadians say that they feel most or all Asian Canadians do not contribute to the broader community. More (one-quarter) say many or most Asian Canadians do not make an effort to fit into broader Canadian society. * One-in-three non-Asian respondents say Chinese Canadians are more loyal to China than to Canada regarding issues of bilateral conflict between the two nations. Just seven per cent of Chinese Canadians say this is actually the case. * Nearly the identical number of Asian (20%) and non-Asian Canadians (17%) say that they would prefer if the community they live in was people from their own race or ethnicity * Asian and non-Asian Canadians tend to agree that this issue will take another gen-
eration to solve. Three-in-five among each group say this is the case, while one-in-four Asian Canadians (26%) do not think Canada will ever overcome some of its discriminatory
practices and prejudices – 10 points higher than non-Asians (16%) The full poll data is available at www.angusreid.org/anti-asian-discrimination.

Vancouver Police seize guns in illegal marijuana store bust VANCOUVER Police are investigating after firearms were located during an inspection of an unlicensed marijuana store by the Province’s Community Safety Unit (CSU). “The Community Safety Unit has the authority to enter premises where cannabis is being sold without a provincial retail store licence and take enforcement action, including seizing cannabis,” said Constable Tania Visintin on Friday. “Legislation states that a seller must be licensed by the provincial government and that product for sale must be sourced through the provincial government to ensure the safety of the product, and ultimately, the consumer. The unlicensed sale of cannabis is illegal.” Officers from VPD’s Organized Crime Section and patrol assisted investigators from the CSU during an inspection of an unlicensed cannabis business located near Clarke Drive and William Street on June 9. While conducting their inspection, CSU investigators discovered two handguns. VPD’s Organized Crime Unit obtained a search warrant to seize the weapons. “Knowing these illegal weapons are in shops around the city is definitely concerning and it poses a risk to the public,” said Visintin. A large volume of cannabis oils, cannabis topicals and cannabis edibles were seized with an estimated retail value of $50,000$60,000. In addition to the cannabis products, CSU located approximately 25 pounds of dried Psilocybin (mushrooms), approximately 75 pounds of Psilocybin infused edible products, and hundreds of individually packaged Psilocybin powder mixed with nutrition supplements. The estimated retail value is $100,000. A 35-year-old man was arrested and has been released pending further investigation. The investigation is ongoing. The CSU, under the Policing and Security Branch of the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General, is responsible for compliance and enforcement under the Cannabis Control and Licensing Act.

Harjot Chahal and Alex Lytle charged with firearms offences in “straw purchaser” investigation 2 Criminal Code offences: – Trafficking a firearm – Offer to traffick a firearm Alex Lytle has now been charged with 5 Criminal Code offences: – Possession of a firearm contrary to an order (Prohibition) (4 counts) – Possession of a loaded/restricted firearm. Both males have been released awaiting the court process. “Do not be used by criminals looking to
secure firearms to be used in crimes,” said CFSEU-BC Superintendent Duncan Pound. “The Crime Guns Intelligence and Investigations Group (CGIIG) within CFSEU-BC is working with firearms retailers, the National Weapons Enforcement Support Team and the Chief Firearms Officer to aggressively pursue straw purchasers and criminals linked to them. If you have any information about suspicious firearms purchasers please contact your local police.”
HIGH QUALITY - EXCELLENT SERVICE Weapons and other items seized by CFSEU-BC. HARJOT Chahal, 26, of Pitt Meadows, and Alex Lytle, 31, of Port Coquitlam have been charged with firearms offences after officers with the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit – British Columbia (CFSEU-BC) initiated a firearm trafficking investigation. In mid-2020, investigators from CFSEU-BC initiated an investigation into the alleged use of a “straw purchaser” after responding to a suspicious purchase of a firearm by two males who attended a Lower Mainland firearms retailer. The investigation revealed that one of the men, who did not have a valid license to purchase firearms and was prohibited from possessing firearms, appeared to be directing the other male to purchase a firearm and ammunition. The purchaser had also bought several other firearms in the past year. The investigation proceeded and in early September 2020 led to the arrest of one of the males. This led to the recovery of one firearm. A short time later, the investigation lead to the execution of a search warrant on a residence and storage locker. Items seized included: – 2 shotguns – Various ammunition – 2 rifles – High capacity magazines – police related equipment including police hats, shoulder flashes, and a vest and collapsible baton
Holy Leaf
– starter pistol Along with the search warrants, an additional five firearms were seized during the course of the investigation: – 3 handguns, one of which had the serial number tampered with – 1 SKS semi-automatic rifle – 1 CZ Scorpion semi-automatic rifle A “straw purchaser” is someone with a valid Possession and Acquisition License (PAL), but no criminal record, who is recruited by others, often those involved in crime, to obtain firearms for someone who otherwise could not. Those who are arranging the purchase through the straw purchaser do not want their name associated with the transaction because they have a criminal record, are banned from purchasing or owning firearms, or are, themselves, acting on behalf of others involved in crime. The firearms, after initially acquired legally, are trafficked, sold in criminal markets and used in crimes. Straw purchasing, which the RCMP-led National Weapons Enforcement Support Team (NWEST) advises they have seen more of the past 18 months, undermines the legal firearm acquisition and ownership process by lawabiding gun owners. Their criminal actions lead to these guns potentially ending up in the hands of those people who pose the greatest risks to public safety. Harjot Chahal has now been charged with

Expanded medical device coverage for people with diabetes BRITISH Columbians living with diabetes will now have the Dexcom G6, a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) that provides regular updates on blood glucose levels throughout the day, covered through BC PharmaCare. “Thousands of British Columbians will benefit from coverage of continuous glucose monitors, which will allow patients to stay on top of their glucose levels with an easy, convenient system and will help patients and their health-care providers make better treatment decisions,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health, on Friday. “We are grateful for the record number of British Columbians who provided input during our review of continuous glucose monitors. Your input is valuable and helps us determine what coverage is most beneficial to British Columbians.” CGMs let people living with diabetes take control of their condition by automatically tracking glucose levels in real time. CGMs send regular readings of glucose levels to a device, such as a compatible smartphone or a reader, including push alerts when the patient’s blood glucose levels are outside a defined range. This enables patients or their caregivers to take action sooner, and helps protect people by empowering patients, caregivers and clinicians to identify glucose trends and adjust medications, activity and food intake. With CGMs, a small sensor is attached to the skin on a patient’s abdomen or upper buttock. The Dexcom G6 sensor lasts 10 days before it must be replaced, and the Dexcom G6 transmitter can be used for 90 days. These devices are expected to benefit almost 20,000 British Columbians each year in the first three years. At list price, it would have cost approximately $100 million over three years to implement coverage for the Dexcom G6 CGM. The Province successfully negotiated a discount. The Dexcom G6 CGM will be a limited-coverage benefit, meaning coverage is available to people with diabetes who meet the special authority criteria for CGMs. For patients who receive special authority approval, coverage will be provided to people enrolled in Fair PharmaCare and to those with PharmaCare coverage through Plan C (income assistance), Plan F (children in the At Home program) or Plan W (First Nations health benefits). On average, over 29,000 people are diagnosed with diabetes every year in British Columbia. Diabetes affects the body’s ability to regulate blood glucose levels. The complications of poorly controlled diabetes range from acute (e.g., fatigue, ketoacidosis and seizures) to chronic (e.g., nerve and organ damage). In Canada, diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death, and the leading cause of blindness, end-stage kidney disease and non-traumatic amputation.
Fatal single vehicle collision in Surrey ON Monday at 6:52 a.m., Surrey RCMP received a report of a single vehicle collision into a pole on 108 Avenue just west of 144 Street. Police located a male passenger with significant injuries. Despite lifesaving efforts performed by Surrey Fire Service and Emergency Health Services the man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene of the collision. Two other occupants of the vehicle were transported to local area hospitals with nonlife-threatening injuries. The RCMP Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) has been deployed to the scene to conduct a full investigation. The cause of the collision has not been determined but police are looking into the possibility that impairment may have been a factor. Anyone with more information is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502. If you wish to make an anonymous report, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or www.solvecrime.ca.

Premier John Horgan and NDP remain in a strong position in B.C.: Angus Reid poll PREMIER John Horgan and his NDP remain in a strong position in British Columbia, according to an Angus Reid Institute poll. The Angus Reid Institute noted: “British Columbia’s Dr. Bonnie Henry noted that as early as September 7, the province’s reopening plan could enter Phase Four, meaning that Canucks fans may be able to watch
their team in person when the season kicks off in October. B.C.’s dropping cases and the province’s reopening plan have helped Premier John Horgan to generally maintain his approval level at 63 per cent – down three points from last quarter. “The B.C. government shines when respondents rate its handling of COVID-19 as well as
health care more broadly. That said, there are persistent challenges. The province receives among the worst ratings in the country for both housing affordability and dealing with addiction and drugs. Two-infive (39%) say the BC NDP is handling the environment well, despite months of ongoing and politically problematic protests

ACROSS Canada, Ontario’s Doug Ford and Alberta’s Jason Kenney are experiencing notable pandemic-related declines in job performance approval, which in turn are affecting – at least for now – their parties’ respective political fortunes. Ford, whose personal approval soared to almost 70 per cent in the spring of 2020, is now at half that level, down 15 points since last quarter. To the west, Albertans are souring on Kenney, fewer than one-third (31%) approve of his performance, off nine points over the last three months. On the other end of the spec-
trum, this has been a period of Atlantic Canadians warming to relatively new premiers. Premier Andrew Furey’s approval gained 17 points in Newfoundland and Labrador, from 45 per
cent in March to 62 per cent. And Iain Rankin, whose performance half of Nova Scotians had no opinion of last quarter, gained 22 points in approval, up to 53 per cent.

NDP attacks BC Liberal leadership hopeful Michael Lee on abortion and 2SLGBTQ+ rights BC Liberal leadership candidate Michael Lee’s views on reproductive choice and SOGI are out of step with most British Columbians, the NDP said on Thursday. (Lee officially announced his bid for the BC Liberal leadership on Wednesday). The NDP said that during the 2017 BC Liberal Leadership race and throughout his career, Lee has taken
positions that threaten people’s rights. * When he last ran for BC Liberal leader in 2017, he was endorsed by antiabortion group Right Now, which actively campaigns to restrict abortion access. * Lee told the group there should be more restrictions on abortions, and that policies should be changed to force parental consent for

minors. * He promised to allow free votes on abortion and medically assisted dying in the legislature. * He said “I know there are parents who are concerned” about sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) education and he promised to “require positive parental consent on curriculum and programming.”
* He was one of 14 BC Liberal MLAs who spent public dollars advertising in an anti-2SLGBTQ+ magazine last year. Unlike several of his colleagues, he has not apologized. Michael Lee also led the BC Liberal effort to oppose the switch to an Enhanced Care model at ICBC. He and his colleagues voted against saving British Columbians
$400/year on their car insurance. NDP MLA Grace Lore said: “Michael Lee’s views on abortion and 2SLGBTQ+ education are out of step with most British Columbians. His openness to antiabortion and anti-SOGI policy would be another step backwards for the BC Liberals and would be a threat to people’s rights.”
Horgan continues to ignore veterans’ calls for support: BC Liberals MLA for Abbotsford South and Opposition Critic for Citizens’ Services Bruce Banman on Monday asked Premier John Horgan why he continues to ignore Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans in Canada (ANAVETS) and their requests for the Premier to stop
excluding them from his pandemic supports. “It’s truly unbelievable that the day after the anniversary of D-Day, the Premier still has no concern for ANAVETS units who need funding now,” said Banman, “For weeks, he refused to provide groups
like the Legions and Army, Navy and Airforce clubs access to circuit breaker funding, and even when he offered some degree of support for our Legions, he continued to snub another vital organization that cares for our veterans.”

Lack of NDP action on ambulance shortage risks lives: BC Liberals THE BC Liberals are calling on Premier John Horgan to step up and provide the resources needed to keep people safe as British Columbians are left waiting hours for ambulances in emergencies. “Right now, our frontline workers are being stretched to the brink and paramedics in particular are struggling with low staffing levels and long hours, and are in desperate need of better government support,” said Renee Merrifield, BC Liberal Critic for Health. “We need to see this government, and this Premier, take immediate action so that British Columbians are not left needlessly suffering while waiting for help to arrive. Fraser Health: Get your first dose of COVID-19 vaccine at same-day immunization and neighbourhood clinics FRASER Health is encouraging eligible people in the region who haven’t received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine to attend easy accessible, same-day immunization (EASI) clinics in Surrey. This ongoing effort provides easy access to same day vaccine registration and appointments, with managed wait times. Easy, accessible, same-day immunization (EASI) clinics are located at the existing clinics, and are open to anyone 12 years and older for first dose immunization. All Fraser Health residents are welcome, including those without personal health numbers, vulnerable people and/or people who are not residents of B.C. Staff are available on-site to help people register and book appointments at other clinics
throughout the region if needed, and can help answer all vaccine-related questions. EASI clinic: Surrey North 10025 King George Boulevard, Surrey Daily: 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. or until daily vaccines are distributed *Note that this clinic is located in a standalone building at the corner of King George Boulevard and 100th Avenue (Old Yale Road). It is not in the mall. In addition, there are neighbourhood clinics to help support specific communities for first dose COVID-19 vaccination. Neighbourhood clinics are designed to ensure vaccine priority is given to people living in the neighbourhood. Appointments are for same-day
immunization for residents requiring a first dose. These clinics are all in addition to the COVID-19 immunization centres. For an ongoing schedule of EASI and neighbourhood clinics, visit fraserhealth.ca/easi. “While it remains critical that we continue following public health orders and guidance, receiving COVID-19 vaccine helps put the COVID-19 pandemic behind us. It brings us one-step closer to reconnecting with the people we care about, returning to the activities we enjoy while protecting our health system and helping businesses in our community return to normal operations,” says Fraser Health. For more information about COVID-19, visit fraserhealth.ca/covid19.
TransLink boosting bus service on June 21 TRANSLINK announced on Monday that it is increasing bus service starting June 21 in anticipation of greater customer demand as
COVID-19 restrictions ease and to include additional service to outdoor attractions. While transit frequencies are already at or near pre-
pandemic levels, these increases will provide even more service and space for customers returning to transit throughout the summer.
These increases specifically target warmer weather tourist destinations such as Stanley Park, White Pine Beach, Buntzen Lake, Rocky Point Park, and Lions Bay. Some specific increases include: * Seasonal service is doubling on Routes 150 (Coquitlam Central Station / White Pine Beach), 179 (Coquitlam Central Station / Buntzen Lake), and 182 (Moody Centre Station / Belcarra). * Service on Route 262 (Lions Bay / Caulfield) will now run until 11:30 p.m. instead of 7 p.m. * Service on Route 19 (Metrotown / Stanley Park) will now depart every 5-7 minutes between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. every weekday TransLink says it adjusts service quarterly to reflect changes in seasonal travel patterns based on demand from previous years. It will continue to closely monitor customer demand throughout the summer and adjust service appropriately. For the full list of seasonal service changes beginning on June 21, visit TransLink’s Service Changes Webpage. Plan your trip with TransLink’s Trip Planner or through Google Maps.

SUMMER is coming to Surrey, and so are new street banners! These colourful new designs are an upbeat way to celebrate Surrey’s outdoor public spaces this summer, as each colourful design represents themes from each community, says the City. “Each year, the City of Surrey Banner Program installs over 1,600 street banners on street poles across the City,” said Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum. “Look above your head for new Town Centre street banners designs in Newton, Cloverdale, Fleetwood, Guildford and Semiahmoo. In combination with this year’s Love Where You Live clean-up events, these banners are a way to beautify City streets, while also celebrating local artwork.” The Town Centre banner program commissions local artist to create unique designs that can be found in the vicinity of significant arts and culture facilities. This year’s design was created by Surrey artist Nicoletta Baumeister, entitled Seed/Flower/Fruit/Vegetable. Baumeister’s design is built on a geometric framework of overlapping circles referred to as the “Seed of Life”. The structure of all fruits and vegetables, including their seeds and flowers, are to be found in this design. Moreover, the overlapping elements represent commonality and communication: the building blocks of trust. Banner designs are updated every two years, and previous years’ banners are up-cycled or recycled. Schools and non-profits can request old banners from the City of Surrey for use in non-profit activities by contacting neighbourhoodteam@surrey.ca. Community groups interested in sponsoring their own local banners can also reach out to the City of Surrey for more information on how to get involved in the Community Banner program. B.C. invests $15 million for more diversity in tech sector THE B.C. government is investing $15 million in the Innovator Skills Initiative (ISI) to prioritize under-represented people in the technology sector. The ISI, through the StrongerBC Future Leaders program, offers $5,000 for up to 3,000 paid placements at businesses in B.C. that are hiring for tech or tech-related roles. The funding supplements the salary of a new employee. Brenda Bailey, Parliamentary Secretary for Technology and Innovation, is leading stakeholder engagement with people and organizations from under-represented communities to hear how the B.C. government can prioritize inclusion through the ISI program to help people get their first job in the tech sector. “Too many well-deserving women, genderdiverse people, Indigenous, Black and people of colour, and other marginalized communities have struggled to enter the growing technology sector and this needs to change,” said Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation. “This work being done by Parliamentary Secretary Bailey will help create a more diverse tech sector and provide people with a solid future, with good jobs and opportunities for advancement. By filling talent shortages, B.C. businesses have the opportunity to expand and grow.” Bailey co-founded Canada’s first women-owned and operated video game studio in 2011. As part of her mandate, Bailey is committed to ensuring placements for under-represented people are available in the tech sector by increasing the number of ISI grants, and that B.C.-based tech companies can hire and grow. The engagement sessions will include women and gender-diverse people, Indigenous, Black and people of colour (IBPOC), and people with disabilities, among others. Meetings will take place with various groups, such as Inclusion BC, Black Entrepreneurs and Businesses of Canada Society, Black Business Association of BC, Ethos Lab, MOSAIC, Traction on Demand, First Nations Technology Council, and Jelly Digital Marketing and other identified groups. Consultations started in May and will run until end of June 2021. “We want to ensure under-represented people have access to the career opportunities that they deserve,” Bailey said. “The B.C. government is proud to provide grants that will help fund up to 3,000 paid positions for people who have historically been under-represented in the tech sector.

Brenda Bailey Filling these jobs will make a positive difference to the B.C. economy, particularly for communities that have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic.” The ISI is administered by Innovate BC, a Crown agency that connects innovators in every industry and region with funding, resources and the support they need to build and grow companies. “B.C. companies need tech talent to succeed in today’s economy,” said Andrew Petter, chair of Innovate BC. “By assisting under-represented people to secure tech jobs, the ISI program creates a double benefit – it opens doors of opportunity for workers while helping B.C. businesses to grow and thrive.” Feedback collected through the engagement process will be used to shape the ISI program to ensure it prioritizes inclusion and will be more accessible to under-represented people. Consideration is also being given to how to make the program simpler for businesses to use through modifications like streamlining administrative requirements and accessing talent and funding more quickly. Applications are expected to open in summer 2021 for placements to the program in fall 2021. “I believe the power of this program is that of opportunity. Creating tech job opportunities for women and non-binary people, Indigenous and Black people, people of colour and others is a brilliant way to support those hardest hit during the pandemic,” said Jackee Kasandy, co-founder of Black Entrepreneurs and Businesses of Canada Society. “Getting a meaningful job that

Surrey RCMP seize 7 imitation firearms and prepackaged fentanyl at traffic stop SURREY RCMP frontline officers seized seven imitation firearms and a large amount of suspected fentanyl following a recent traffic stop in Whalley. On June 4, at 4:40 p.m., Surrey RCMP frontline officers conducted a traffic stop with a vehicle for a Motor Vehicle Act investigation, in the area of 94 Avenue and King George Boulevard. During their interaction with the driver, the officers observed items consistent with drug trafficking and arrested the driver and passenger. Further investigation led to the seizure of seven imitation firearms, a pistol magazine with live ammunition, a sword, and a knife. Police also located and seized multiple packages containing 157 grams of suspected fentanyl, and approximately $250 in cash. A 34-year-old male from Surrey and a 34-year-old fe-
male from Port Coquitlam were released at scene. A report to BC Prosecution Services is expected following further investigation. “Many people do not know that it is a crime to use or possess imitation firearms during the commission of an offense,” said Constable Sarbjit K. Sangha, Media Relations Officer. “In Canada, using imitation firearms to
commit crimes is an indictable offence, meaning a person may be subject to jail time and financial penalties upon conviction.” Anyone with more information is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-5990502. If you wish to make an anonymous report, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or www. solvecrime.ca.

Burnaby RCMP’s Drug Section seizes drugs, weapons and cash AFTER a months-long investigation into a drug organization associated to Lower Mainland gangs, Burnaby RCMP’s Drug Section has made a significant seizure of drugs, weapons and cash. With the assistance of Strike Force and the Community Response Team, Burnaby RCMP’s Drug Section executed a residential search warrant, which led to the arrest of a Coquitlam resident and numerous seizures. Some of the items seized were multiple ounces of suspected cocaine and fentanyl likely bound for street-level trafficking, as well as approximately $15,000 in cash, a high-end vehicle, several weapons, and ammunition for an SKS assault rifle. “This enforcement action serves to cut off the lethal
supply of street drugs to users and will also significantly disrupt this organization.” said Inspector Matt Toews, Investigative Services Officer with the Burnaby RCMP. “These weapons are often used by gangs for violent incidents and murders such as the ones most recently plaguing the Lower Mainland.” Drugs and weapons charges
against two people associated to the drug organization will be forwarded to the BC Prosecution Service.
Three men charged in 2018 UBC sexual assault investigation
THREE men have now been charged for sexual assault in relation to a 2018 incident in Vancouver. Just before 4:30 a.m. on November 5, 2018, University RCMP received a 911 call from a woman who reported she had been sexually assaulted by three men at the residence in Vancouver on Acadia Road. The University RCMP immediately launched an investigation and sought assistance and expertise from the BC RCMP Major Crime Section (MCS), who took conduct of the investigation. The BC Prosecution Service
has approved charges against three men allegedly involved in the assault. Treymont Levy, 26, Trivel Pinto, 25, and Ben Cummings, 24, have each been charged with one count each of sexual assault. Levy has been charged with one count of voyeurism in addition to the sexual assault charge. The three men have been arrested and remain in police custody at this time. They are expected to appear in a Richmond Provincial court at a later date. According to a media report, the three are former UBC football players. Pinto
and Cummings were on the Thunderbirds roster in 2018. Levy’s final season was in 2016. “We understand there may be questions related to the circumstances around this assault, but we respect that this matter now is before the court. As such no further information will be provided,” said Acting Officer-In-Charge (A/OIC) Superintendent Sanjaya Wijayakoon of the BC RCMP MCS. “Our priority at this time is to prepare for, and to continue to provide support for the victim through the upcoming court process.”

Bulk fentanyl and meth seized by Surrey RCMP Gang Enforcement Team A bulk quantity of suspected fentanyl and methamphetamine has been seized by the Surrey RCMP Gang Enforcement Team (SGET) as the result of a traffic stop in Cloverdale. On June 8 at 6:50 p.m., SGET conducted a traffic stop with a vehicle for a motor vehicle infraction in the area of 176 Street and Fraser Highway. As they interacted with the driver, officers saw evidence of weapons’ possession. The driver was arrested. Further investigation led to the seizure of a holster, two starter pistols, a large canister of bear mace, multiple knives, and $1,200 in cash. Officers also located and seized two plastic bags containing bulk amounts of suspected illicit drugs: 89 grams of suspected fentanyl, and 58 grams of suspected methamphetamine.
The driver, a 47-year-old man from Surrey was issued violations tickets for Motor Vehicle Act of-
fences. He was also served a warning letter as the registered owner of a vehicle involved in crime that in the future if this vehicle is involved in criminal activity, it will be seized as offence-related property. The man was released from police custody. Charges have not yet been laid, as the investigation is ongoing. “When we make seizures during traffic stops it is not uncommon for us to find drugs and weapons at the same time,” said Constable Sarbjit K. Sangha, Media Relations Officers for Surrey RCMP. “This really speaks to the danger of the lifestyle drug traffickers place themselves in. Not only do they fear detection by police, but they constantly have to look over their shoulder for rival criminals or even as a result of disputes in their own drug lines.”
Anyone with more information about drug trafficking or gang activity in Surrey is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502. If you wish to make an anonymous report, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or www.solvecrime.ca.

Free COVID-19 vaccines to 18 plus age group from June 21: Modi New York (IANS): As the second wave of coronavirus has been indicating a declining trend in India for the last few days, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday announced that all Indians above 18 years of age will be administered free COVID-19 vaccines from June 21. Addressing the nation, the Prime Minister made it clear that the states will be provided these vaccine doses free of cost from the Central government. “The government of India will provide free vaccine to the states from Monday, June 21, in every state for all citizens above the age of 18 years,” Modi said.
The Prime Minister said that government of India itself will buy 75 per cent of the total vaccine production from vaccine
New Delhi (IANS): The Congress on Monday contended that the Narendra Modi government’s decision to provide free vaccines to all above 18 years of age was taken after the Supreme Court pulled it up and questioned its vaccine policy. Addressing a press conference here, Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said: “Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress President Sonia Gandhi, party leader Rahul Gandhi and several others had been writing to the government for providing free vaccines to every citizen of the country, but the government did not pay heed to their demands. “And the Narendra Modi government was brought into the dock by the Supreme Court and several other courts of the country. And today at least the government has accepted the demands of the
Congress partially to vaccinate all above 18 years of age for free.” His remarks came after Prime Minister Modi, in a televised address to the nation, said that all Indians above 18 years of age will be administered free COVID-19 vaccine from June 21, and that the states will be provided these vaccine doses free of cost from the Central government. Launching an attack on the government, the Congress leader said that by not buying vaccines from May 2020 to January 2021, and not allowing free vaccines to all till June 7 this year, the government has committed a sin due to which lakhs of people lost their lives. Surjewala said that in the last six months the government had taken three different steps, and then the Supreme Court and several other courts of the country slammed the government over its “confused”

manufacturers and give it free to the state governments. Modi also said that 25 per cent of the vaccines being made in the country will be provided directly to the private sector hospitals while they will be able to charge a maximum service fee of Rs 150 for a single dose on top of the fixed price of the vaccine. “The task of monitoring it will remain with the state governments,” the Prime Minister added. “No state government of the country will have to spend anything on the vaccine,” Modi said. Till now, the Prime Minister said tens of millions of people of
the country have got free vaccine. “Now people of 18 years of age will also join them.” “Only the Government of India will provide free vaccine to all the countrymen,” Modi reiterated. It was decided on Monday that the Government of India will also bear the responsibility of 25 per cent of the work related to vaccination with the state governments, said Modi, adding “this arrangement will be implemented in the coming two weeks.” He said: “In these two weeks, the central and state governments will together make necessary preparations according to the new guidelines.”
Government decided to provide free vaccines after Supreme Court’s rap: Congress
Randeep Singh Surjewala vaccine policy. He said: “Following the bashing from the courts and demands of the Congress and opposition parties, the government has decided to vaccinate all above 18 years of age for free at government hospitals from June 21.
“Can someone tell, why the government changed the vaccine policy thrice in last six months and played with the lives of lakhs of the people of the country,” he asked, adding that shouldn’t the Prime Minister and the government be held accountable for the death of hundreds of thousands of people and those who suffered with COVID-19.” Firing another salvo at the government, Surjewala said: “Till date, the government had been buying 50 per cent of the vaccines produced in the country and the only difference with today’s decision is that the government will now buy 75 per cent of the vaccines produced. While the government has made the arrangement of 25 per cent of the vaccines produced to the private sector. It means if you are a salaried person or a small businessman, then still the vaccine is not free for you.”

Assam to have 7 national parks Guwahati (IANS): With the notification of two more national parks in Assam on Wednesday, the northeastern state now has seven such parks. Only Madhya Pradesh, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands have more national parks at nine each, state Environment and Forest Minister Parimal Suklabaidya said. He said that Raimona and Dihing Patkai National Parks were for-
mally notified on Wednesday. “Assam has become the second state in the country to have the highest number of national parks after Madhya Pradesh and Andaman and Nicobar. The newly created national parks would help to boost conservation efforts and provide fillip to tourism and agriculture sectors,” he told the media at the ‘Aranya Bhawan’, headquarters of the Environment
and Forest Department. The 234.26 square km Dihing Patkai National Park spans eastern Assam’s Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts, while the 422 square km Raimona National Park is located in western Assam’s Kokrajhar district, along West Bengal and Bhutan. The existing five National Parks in Assam are Kaziranga, Manas, Nameri, Orang and Dibru-Saikhowa.
Elephants in a national park in Assam. Kaziranga and Manas are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. They are also tiger reserves, along with Nameri and Orang. The minister also said that the forest village areas diverted under the Forest Conservation Act have been excluded. Short stretches of the Dirak and Buri Dihing rivers have been included in the Dihing Patkai National Park. Dihing Patkai came in the limelight a year ago for illegal coal
mining in the surrounding areas. Additional anti-poaching camps and manpower are being deployed for strengthening the security and patrolling besides conservation of the new national parks. The Raimona National Park in Kokrajhar district has a variety of wildlife including golden langurs, Asian elephants, tigers, clouded leopards, Indian gaurs, wild buffalos, spotted deer, hornbills,
more than 150 species of butterflies, 170 species of birds, 380 species of plants and many species of orchids. A forest official said: “Raimona is in close proximity to the forested areas of Phipsoo Wildlife Sanctuary and Jigme Singye Wangchuk National Park in Bhutan (total area of 1,999 sq. km) creating a transboundary conservation landscape of more than 2,400 square km.” “Such protected transboundary ecological settings would ensure the long-standing conservation of wild and endangered species like the golden langur, (mascot of Bodoland Territorial Council) and the Asian elephant, the Bengal tiger and a diverse flora and fauna,” the official said. Raimona is also a vital part of the 2,837 square km Manas Biosphere Reserve and the ChirangRipu Elephant Reserve.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACB) on Tuesday approved the proposal of Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) for extension in central deputation tenure of Vinayak, a 1995-batch Sikkim cadre officer. Vinayak would now continue as Joint Director of the CBI, for a period of six months beyond March 9 this year. The decision was taken by the ACB, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in relaxation of the Indian Police Service (IPS) Tenure Policy, 2010.

Vinayak has probed some high profile cases, including the IRCTC scam involving then Railway Minister and RJD chief Lalu Prasad, former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh in a dis-
proportionate asset case, the arms license scam in Jammu and Kashmir involving several bureaucrats, illegal encroachment of forest land and recently the Roshni Scam case that the agency registered involving several top politicians, including former Jammu and Kashmir chief ministers Farooq Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti. [The Roshni Act had proposed to transfer ownership of state land to its occupants for a fee determined by the government.] This is the third time when Vinayak is being given extension in his service. He was earlier given extension of deputation tenure in CBI from September 2018 to September 9, 2020 for a period of two years. Then again his tenure was extended till March this year.

To a question on the rumours about a further bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir and the creation of a separate Jammu state with parts of Kashmir Valley in it, he said such rumours keep floating in Kashmir and they have also been hearing the same. “Rumours always keep float-
ing in Kashmir. Let them do what they want to do, we are holding the rope of Allah and we hope that he will keep our future secure,” he said. The meeting convened by the PAGD, a conglomerate of Kashmir-based political parties, on Wednesday was attended by PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti, Farooq Abdullah, Awami National Confer-
ence leader Muzaffar Shah and CPI-M leader Yusuf Taragami, among others. The PAGD was floated for the reversal of the constitutional changes made to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir on August 5, 2019. Taragami has been appointed as the new spokesperson of PAGD.
Constable kills convicts’s son, says he was threatened Lucknow (IANS): In a shocking incident, a 28-year-old constable deployed in the security ring of a murder convict, admitted in the Ram Manohar Lohia hospital, shot dead the convict’s son from point-blank range at the hospital gate. The deceased, Praveen Singh, 34, slumped to the ground in a pool of blood after the bullet ripped through his skull. The incident took place late on Wednesday evening after
which the constable, Ashish Mishra, swiftly changed his uniform, and walked into the nearby Vibhuti Khand police station and surrendered. He had been deployed in the convict’s security ring on May 25. During interrogation, Mishra appeared unrepentant and claimed he shot Praveen to protect himself as the convict’s son often taunted and even threatened to kill him.
The father of the deceased, Dhruv Singh, is undergoing treatment for prostate cancer at the hospital. He was sentenced to life imprisonment on April 16 in a 1997 murder case at Misrikh, Sitapur. Eyewitnesses told the police that there was no immediate provocation or verbal spat that triggered the incident. Commissioner of Police, Lucknow, D. K. Thakur, who rushed to the crime scene, said
the constable’s statement was unconvincing and he appeared to be mentally unsound. “Mishra, a resident of Badaun, was recruited in 2016 and has been posted at Sitapur police lines since 2017. We have sought a feedback on the cop’s family background, finances and whether he had a history of mental illness with violent bouts. We also asked Sitapur SP [Superintendent of Police] to provide details of the con-
vict, Dhruv Singh’s family,” he told reporters. Four policemen, including a head constable, had been deployed at Ram Manohar Lohia hospital, for the convict’s security. “While two constables had rifles on them, Mishra who was on duty did not carry his service weapon. He committed the crime with a country-made pistol, which he said, has gone missing,” the police official
said. Sitapur SP Rakesh Pratap Singh said, “We questioned Mishra’s sister on whether he ever displayed suicidal tendencies or had any other psychiatric illness. She said that he was of sound mind. We also spoke to his friends, colleagues and batchmates and they all concurred he was disciplined, sharp, never an alcoholic and had a good attendance record.”
If ‘ideology’ doesn’t matter, changeover is easy: Sibal New Delhi (IANS): A day after Jitin Prasada left the party, the Congress leaders of the G-23 group of which Jitin Prasada was a part of, attacked him and said that ideological commitment is more important in politics. Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal said, “The question is -- will he get “prasada” from BJP or is he just a ‘catch’ for UP elections? In such deals if ‘ideology’ doesn’t matter, changeover is easy.” He, however, said that the Congress party needs reforms and he will continue to raise the issues within the party. Sibal said he will never join the BJP as he
Kapil Sibal has opposed the party’s ideology. Another leader who was signatory to the letter, M. Veerappa Moily said that Jitin Prasada did not have ideological commitment and party should look at this also before promoting such persons.
The Congress leaders have termed him opportunist and said that the party gave him whatever it could, but he chose to walk away. Prasada after joining BJP on Wednesday, had said, “I feel there is no purpose of your doing politics or staying in a political party if a person is not able to serve or protect the interest of its people. I realized being in Congress and not being able to do the same. So, I joined BJP and my work will only speak for itself.” His father Jitendra Prasada was a prominent ‘Brahmin’ face in Uttar Prasad,
who had challenged Sonia Gandhi’s leadership in
1999 and had contested against her for the post

CRIME OF THE WEEK VPD INVESTIGATES SOUTH VANCOUVER HOMICIDE

Vancouver Police are investigating the city's eighth homicide of the year, which occurred on June 4, 2021 in South Vancouver. Cabin fever can have a bad effect on your health. If you are tired of being home twiddling your thumbs and still scared (or forbidden) to leave your home from a public health standpoint out of the justifiable fear of spreading or contracting Covid during these unsettling times rest easy. Get in the mood for some fun in a rough and tough way if you enjoy lots of gangland style mayhem. Bang bang. Park your brains at the curb and go with the flow during the rousing Wrath of Man. From MGM VVS Films is releasing this film in select theatres and more importantly it’s now available through video on demand. So just dial up your local cable company or internet provider and let the games ( and body count) begin. One word comes to mind when hearing the name Jason Statham: restraint. Oops Fans of the man in black will surely know I got that wrong. 100% wrong. Statham ( The Transporter) stars as H, an aloof loner but with a steely eyed determination to get the job whatever the job - done. Like So many other films in this sphere our lad from across the pond plays to win when he is on a mission. Always. Oh, and having none other than Guy Ritchie ( The Man From U.N.C.L.E.) at the controls
ensures a steady hand, witty dialogue and a nice ride along the way. Heist films if done well can be somewhat of a joy ride or bumpy road depending on planning and execution. Told smartly with a back and forth chronology showing the muddled motivation for H’s action it doesn’t take long to see the anger In this man‘s eyes. No one likes losing a friend much less a loved one so when our main man sees an accident all bets are off and we are led down a very unwieldy path of sheer bold bloody revenge. Money is at the root of all evil
and a get rich quick scheme involving an armored car or two slowly gets out of control. Caught in the middle of this botched up affair is H who meticulously (?) tries to maneuver his way out of trouble with a Hail Mary approach designed to get at the truth and find those responsible for a rather untimely death. Again Guy Ritchie cobbles together a good cast and laces Wrath of Man with loads of plausible (?) action. Realistic and gritty Wrath of Man will get high marks from those who like their entertainment fun, lively and unyielding,

Congress panel on Punjab submits report to Sonia, Amarinder Singh to stay New Delhi (IANS): The Congress panel constituted to resolve factionalism in the party in Punjab, submitted its report to party interim President Sonia Gandhi on Thursday. Sources said the panel has not recommended the removal of the Punjab Chief Minister and Captain Amarinder Singh is likely to lead the party in the next elections. Instead, a slew of reforms has been suggested in the party state unit. While the fate of Navjot Singh Sidhu is still not clear but sources said the panel wants his rehabilitation in the Punjab cabinet. Amarimder Singh is averse to Sidhu being elevated to the
Kolkata (IANS): Personnel of Kolkata Police’s Special Task Force (STF) on Wednesday gunned down two Punjab gangsters believed to be involved in gun running and responsible for killing two policemen. The deceased duo has been identified as Jaspreet Jassi and Jaipal Bhullar. The STF encircled a residential block in New Town’s Shapoorji complex after a tip-off that the two gangsters were hiding there.

after former state Cabinet minister Navjot Singh Sidhu along with Pargat Singh opened a front against the Chief Minister. The All India Congress Committee (AICC) was forced to constitute a committee to listen to the grievances of its Punjab leaders, after a group led by Sidhu suggested a change in the state leadership. However, sources said that there has been no discussion on replacing Amarinder Singh. The Congress wants to pacify Sidhu and retain him in the party by making some minor adjustments, without going for a major shakeup, sources said.
Two wanted Punjab gangsters gunned down in Kolkata shootout northeastern states of India. According to Kolkata Police, Jaspreet Jassi and Jaipal Bhullar -- who were wanted in connection with the killing of two assistant sub-inspectors in Jagraon in Punjab’s Ludhiana district -- were killed in the encounter. Both were wanted in Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh for over 40 cases related to robbery, murder, extortion and kidnapping, among others. However, details regarding a
Kolkata Police said the gangsters fired on the STF personnel and tried to escape, but both were killed in the encounter that lasted for around 35 minutes. The STF raided the residential block after receiving intelligence inputs that the two criminals involved in bringing weapons into West Bengal from Bihar via Birbhum had taken refuge at the New Town complex. These weapons also find their way into Bangladesh and the
Meagre MSP hike for paddy insult to farmers: Amarinder Singh Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Thursday termed the ‘meagre’ MSP hike for paddy as not only grossly inadequate, but also an insult to the farmers who have been fighting for their rightful dues through their anti-farm law agitation for the past six months. At a time when the farmers continue to put their lives on the line with their prolonged protest on the borders of Delhi, the BJP-led Central government has, instead of putting balm on their wounds, added insult to their injuries with the minimum support price (MSP) announcement, said the Chief Minister. Amarinder Singh slammed the ‘anti-farmer’ government at the Centre for consistently failing to protect the interests of the farmers and for its apathy towards their problems. The less than 4 per cent hike in MSP for paddy is not enough even to meet the increased input costs, Amarinder Singh pointed out, citing the extraordi-
nary hike in diesel prices and other costs over the past one year. The increase in MSP for other crops is also quite measly, he added, noting that the small hike in the base price of maize would discourage the farmers from going for the much-needed crop diversification to save the precious and depleting water resource. The Chief Minister noted that the Swaminathan Committee, whose recommendations the Central government has ‘adamantly’ refused to accept, had clearly suggested that MSP should be “at least 50 per cent more than the weighted average cost of production”. Far from implementing the recommendations of the committee in the interest of the farmers and for the nation’s food security, the BJP-led government had passed the anti-farmer laws that are clearly aimed at destroying India’s farmers, the Chief Minister said.

Last week, the panel headed by senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress’ Punjab in-charge Harish Rawat and former MP J.P. Aggarwal met all the stakeholders in the party. Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh also met the three-member Congress panel. After the meeting Amarinder Singh had said, “The meeting was to discuss the preparations for the Assembly elections scheduled early next year. These are our inner party discussions and I don’t propose to share them with you.” The rift in the Punjab Congress had surfaced

third gangster are not available yet. Senior STF officials are present on the spot. Sources in the STF said that the cops came to know about the duo a week back when a truck carrying 20 kg explosives was seized and two persons were arrested in this connection. “Interrogating the duo, we came to know about these two gangsters who were hiding in Kolkata for some days. Further investigation revealed that the duo was hiding in a rented
apartment in the Shapoorji complex in New Town,” an STF officer said. At around at 3.30 p.m. on Wednesday, an STF team raided flat number B 153, an LIG apartment where they were hiding since May 22. Suddenly, they started firing from inside and as a result police had to open fire in retaliation. “We wanted them to surrender but they started firing, so we had to fire back. As a re-
sult, both of them died. One of our personnel, Kartick Ghosh, was injured in the firing. He has suffered a bullet injury on his left shoulder and has been admitted to a private hospital,” one of the officers said. According to STF sources, in May this year, Bhullar, who was a resident of Ferozepur district in Punjab, along with three others had snatched firearms from two cops in Jagraon and shot them dead.
Punjab to prioritise vaccine for students travelling abroad Chandigarh (IANS): Students wanting to go abroad for studies from Punjab will now be prioritised in the vaccination process for the 18-45 group, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh announced on Monday. At a high-level virtual COVID-19 review meeting, the Chief Minister directed the Health and Medical Education Departments to allow districts to use up to 10 per cent of the doses for 18-45 group for priority categories other than those approved at state level. Besides students seeking to go abroad, caregivers of elderly persons and other urgent priority groups may be included in this list, he added. Amarinder Singh also asked the departments concerned to proactively vaccinate
all persons in the categories already prioritised by the state government in this age group, based on vaccine availability. This, he stressed, was essential to keep the risk of spread low as the restrictions are eased in the state. The state had initially prioritised construction labour, co-morbid individuals and families of healthcare workers in the 18-45 age group, and has already vaccinated over 430,000 individuals in these categories. The list was subsequently expanded to include shopkeepers and their staff; staff working in the hospitality industry (hotels, restaurants, marriage palaces, caterers), including cooks, etc; industrial workers; other street vendors especially those serving food items-juice, chat, fruit, etc.

Improved Intelligent All-Wheel Drive for all-new INFINITI QX60
Mississauga, ON.: Confidence doesn’t take a break for bad weather. Recently, INFINITI announced its upcoming QX60 three-row crossover will feature a more advanced Intelligent All-Wheel-Drive system that’s not only more compact and more advanced but also quicker to support the driver with all-wheel traction in nearly any condition. Available later this year, the 2022 INFINITI QX60 marries its awardwinning 3.5-litre V-6 with an all-new 9-speed automatic transmission and the new all-wheel-drive system, which has been rigorously tested in varying conditions from thick blankets of cold snow to scorching sand and slippery wet roads — and nearly every type of surface in between. “We listened to our customers and
we wanted to deliver an all-new INFINITI QX60 that could perform with confidence in nearly all-weather conditions,” said INFINITI’s General Manager, Product Strategy and Planning Eric Rigaux. “Our newest Intel-
ligent All-Wheel Drive exceeds our expectations with seamless power delivery, right when the driver expects it — or even before.” Part of that near-instant response is thanks to the all-wheel-drive sys-
tem’s new direct coupling mechanism that engages the rear wheels almost instantly when more grip is needed. Compared to all-wheeldrive systems that utilize electromagnetic coupling, which requires detectable wheel slip to engage, the new Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system uses a host of sensors to predict when more grip is needed — sometimes even before the wheels slip. “The all-new QX60 is really designed to encounter a wide variety of situations with its all-wheel-drive system. Whether it’s deep snow, sand … even packed snow where it’s a bit more slick,” said Vehicle Performance Development Manager for INFINITI Chris Fischer. “If you’re driving in one of these situations, the system will monitor the road surface
and very quickly move the power from the wheels that don’t have traction to the wheels that do. What this allows you to do is to continue driving forward with good confidence.” Up to 50 per cent of the all-new QX60’s power can be delivered to the rear wheels for greater traction. What’s more, the all-new INFINITI QX60’s Active Brake Limited Slip system utilizes the vehicle’s brakes to direct torque from side to side. That’s particularly useful on roads that are partially iced over, when two wheels have traction and two don’t; INFINITI’s Intelligent AllWheel Drive nearly instantly senses grip and directs power to the correct wheels. That advanced performance pays dividends at takeoff or standing starts.

These results further exemplify the strength of our brand and we are pleased to welcome more Canadians into the Genesis family,” said Richard Trevisan, Brand Director of Genesis Motors Canada. “We will continue to build on this momentum as we prepare for the launch of the redesigned G70 and all-new compact SUV, GV70. This is only the start to what I am sure will be an exceptional year for the Genesis brand.” Genesis sales will continue to significantly increase in 2021 with the launch of exciting new products including Genesis’ first compact SUV, GV70, which will be available for customer preorder as of March 5. This unique functionality allows customers to reserve and complete the purchase of their vehicle online in the comfort of their homes
and is available for all vehicles in Genesis’ portfolio. The Genesis network will also continue to evolve in 2021 as construction begins on new Genesis Retail Experience Centres, which will provide consumers with an elevated omni-channel experience and new way to interact with the brand. Having launched in Canada only four years ago, Genesis has quickly established itself as a top automotive brand and continues to receive praise for its awardwinning products and unique
purchase and ownership experience. Genesis has been on a winning streak in 2021, having already won major awards for every product in its lineup. Most recently, G80 and GV80 were named winners of their respective categories at the Canadian Car and Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year awards. The brand has also won four 2021 autoTRADER.ca Awards including Best Overall Car for G70, and G80 has won the J.D. Power 2021 Canada ALG Residual Value Award.

2021 Chrysler Pacifica Pinnacle: Superlative Luxury Minivan el does reflect the price. For now, the Pacifica remains a classy, good looking minivan with a ton of features. Highly recommended.

Canada’s booming housing market showed small signs of cooling down in April This article was created by StackCommerce
borrowing if it means a cooling of the market.
The pandemic may have been our focus for the past year and a half, but for anyone in Canada considering entering the housing market, there’s been another crisis brewing. In the first quarter of 2021, the cost of a singlefamily home in Canada rose 14.1 per cent yearover-year, this following a year of already unprecedented demand for homes, and month after month of record-setting sales and price appreciation. Will this housing bubble ever burst? Not likely in the near future, but there has been a glimmer of hope recently that the market is slowing down. That’s not to say that prices aren’t still on an upward swing, and for those of you still considering real estate as an investment, it’s not too late.
2020 was a very good year
Of course, no one can predict the future with true accuracy, but the general consensus appears to be that the market will continue to be strong for the remainder of this year, but will slow down in 2022. A number of factors will be in play to make this happen, not the least of which will be rising interest rates. It seems that Canadians are even open to raising the cost of
Is it still a good time to invest in real estate? Some argue that now is one of the best times to invest in the market. However, as always, it is in your interest to not only be informed about what’s happening in the “real world”, but also educate yourself in the rudiments of the industry. Starting with the key concepts you need to know before you even delve into the market, this Fundamentals of Real Estate Investment Bundle includes lectures and content that will help you become savvy in the housing market, as well as the commercial and wholesale fields.

So … just when will this bubble burst?
Well, at least from a home seller’s point of view. Bidding wars and subject-free, over-asking offers became the norm. And those offers were not just a little over asking. In urban centres homes went for hundreds of thousands of dollars above list price. But the big cities were not the only ones experiencing the frenzy. Homes in small towns across the country also were going for never-before-seen prices. Great for the seller — not so much for the buyer.

COMMON SENSE HEALTH – W. GIFFORD-JONES, MD AND DIANA GIFFORD-JONES
35
Are you taking too much medication?
MANY diseases can be effectively managed thanks to therapeutic treatments involving pharmaceutical drugs. But have we gone too far in popping pills for every ache? Or even for serious health conditions, has your doctor put as much thought into how to get you off prescription medications as has gone into putting you on them? The statistics are alarming. A study of drug use among seniors in Canada in 2016 found that 2 out of 3 Canadians over the age of 65 were taking at least 5 different prescription medications and over a quarter took at least 10 different prescription medications! In the U.S., a 2018 national survey found that 48.6% of the entire population used at least one prescription drug in the month prior to the survey. Some of these statistics are certainly made up by people who are taking medications they no longer need. Among adults aged 60–79, the most commonly used drug types in the United States were lipid-lowering drugs, antidiabetic agents, and beta blockers; in Canada, they were lipid-lowering drugs, analgesics, and proton pump inhibitors. How should you proceed if you want to reduce the numbers of medications you take? First, take all your medications to your doctor and have a discussion. But don’t expect miraculous answers, as doctors are known for writing more, not fewer, prescriptions – and sometimes, for good reasons. About 50% of those prescribed medications for chronic conditions stop taking them within the first year of starting therapy. This non-adherence can further deteriorate health. More hospitalizations result, costing an estimated $300 million in avoidable expenditures per year About 1 in 5 individuals prescribed antidepressants who stop medication can suffer a host of problems, collectively called discontinuation syndrome. But there are many situations where less medication is not such tricky business. Sleeping pills, for example, should only be for short-term use. Allergy medication should only be used when allergens cause symptoms. Stopping blood pressure medication needs your doctor’s endorsement. But one way to manage hypertension and get blood pressure into the normal range is to lose extra weight. Finding natural alternatives to strong, addictive painkillers is another smart move. It’s also highly advisable to have a strategy for reducing cholesterol medicines, known as statins, which can have devastating side effects, including liver damage and memory problems. Has your doctor made you aware of all your choices? If you’ve read this column for years, you’ll know that high-dose vitamin C could be a life-saving option for reducing the rick of heart attack or stroke. A special note about those who are very elderly or frail. These individuals can be more susceptible to medications, particularly when considering the extent of inappropriate polypharmacy (i.e., too many drugs, unnecessary drugs, and/or doses that are too high) that they are often taking without adequate oversight. If you are, or know someone, at risk, then be careful to ensure that the doctor has full information about all medications and that the patient understands benefits and harms of medication and gives consent. Socioeconomic factors are also noteworthy. Seniors living in long-term care facilities, low-income neighbourhoods and rural/
remote neighbourhoods used more drugs, with one study showing 21.4% of seniors living in the lowest-income neighbourhoods were prescribed 10 or more drug classes, compared with 14.3% of seniors living in the highest-income neighbourhoods. Finally, if you have been able to make reductions, how should you dispose of all the unused or expired medications? Most jurisdictions have drug take back sites. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has a “Flush List” of those medications that can be disposed of in the toilet. Whatever your means of disposal, remember that drugs pose a huge hazard to unsuspecting children or pets. Dispose of them safely.
