THE Province announced on Wednesday that millions of British Columbians will benefit from new measures to help people with the high cost of living caused by global inflation. “Everyone is feeling the squeeze of global in flation, which is driving up the cost of grocer ies, gas, and other goods and services,” said Premier John Horgan. “Our next support mea sures will help bring down costs for renters, put money back into people’s pockets and offer families a cushion during challenging Thetimes.”Province is increasing the next Climate Action Tax Credit payment, boosting the BC Family Benefit and capping rent increases below inflation, a package estimated to be worth up to $1,500 for a family of four.
* No one needs to apply for the enhanced Cli mate Action Tax Credit and BC Family Benefit.
“People with lower incomes and people rais ing children are the most affected by the cost increases we’re seeing around the world,” said Finance Minister Selina Robinson. “These measures are our next steps in help ing to support those who need it most.”
* In October 2022, the maximum amount for the Climate Action Tax Credit for low- and moderate-income British Columbians will be enhanced by up to an additional $164 per adult and $41 per child. This means a family with two children can receive up to an addi tional $410.

On Tuesday, September 6 at 6:30 a.m., Co quitlam RCMP frontline officers were the first to respond to a report of a single vehicle col lision in the 200-block of North Road, near the Coquitlam-Burnaby border.
It appears the black Honda Civic had been trav elling southbound on North Road when it left the roadway and flipped. It does not appear any other vehicles were involved, police said. The 36-year-old male driver was transported to hospital with minor injuries. The passenger was pronounced dead on scene.
Anyone who witnessed this collision or may have dash cam video is asked to contact Burn aby RCMP at 604-646-9999, and quote file num ber 2022-29819.
* In January, February and March 2023, the BC Family Benefit will rise by as much as $58.33 per child, for each month. A family with two children will receive up to $350 from this top*up.Instead of allowing rent increases equiva lent to inflation, government is placing a 2% cap on rent increases for 2023. For a renter paying $2,000 in rent, this will mean saving up to $816 next year.
“Our government has saved families thou sands of dollars by capping rent increases to inflation by eliminating the old government’s automatic 2% rent increase on top of infla tion,” said Murray Rankin, Attorney General and Minister Responsible for Housing. “But right now, Canada is seeing the highest lev els of inflation in decades – especially when it comes to housing costs. By setting the maximum annual allowable rent increase for 2023 at 2%, we’re helping renters keep more money in their pocket. We also recognize that landlords are facing the same inflation ary pressure, and we are committed to ensur ing that landlords can make the necessary repairs and upgrades to their rental units so they can provide housing for years to come.” Government is also working with BC Hydro on an additional cost-of-living measure to help B.C. residents reduce expenses during this period of high global inflation.

“For most Canadians, we have known no other Sovereign. Queen Elizabeth II was a constant presence in our lives. Time and again, Her Majesty marked Canada’s modern history. THIS week across B.C., kids are heading back to school. It’s an exciting time, full of old friends, new friends, and major milestones. People in B.C. are proud of our public school system and the world-class education that we provide for kids of all ages. Parents can feel confident that their child’s classroom is a safe, supportive, nurturing environment.
Welcoming students back to school

Last week we announced the Student and Family Afford ability Fund, which will help reduce the bur den on families by providing one-time fund ing of $60 million to school districts to help ensure students are fed and have the school supplies they need to be successful this year.

Given the proper tools and the right learning environment, there is no limit to what our kids can achieve during their educational journey, and beyond. We are not only teaching future leaders – many of our young students are already leaders in their own right, whether in the classroom, on the playground, on the sports field or in their

Parents who need support should contact their child’s teacher, counsellor, or principal to access resources that can help.

The rear axle is powered by its own 87 hp motor, and there is the option of selecting from four different drive modes or letting the computer decide. Pure mode keeps the S90 in full-EV mode if you have the juice. Hybrid mode optimizes fuel economy and Power mode firms up suspension setting, use of both the gas engine and EV motor and offers faster gear shifts. Despite Its weight and size, the S90 handles twisty roads and bends with effortless grace. It is a supremely fun and entertain ing car to drive, yet very relaxing to operate. For the 2022 S90 T8 Recharge PHEV sedan, changes are minor , but include a new Android-based infotainment with Google built in and front USB ports switch from Type-A to Type-C. The sensors for the driver-assistance features are also upgraded. Mechani cally, the Recharge lineup stays unchanged; however, the base T6 car gets a new mild-hybrid 48-volt powertrain. The new base pow ertrain in the S90 is the B6 mildhybrid engine with standard allwheel drive. Compared to the T6 powertrain in the 2021 model, the B6 makes a little less power and a little more torque. The mild-hy brid system improves fuel econo my, making the S90 pretty efficient for a midsize luxury sedan. The features in the optional packages

The front seats gains as standard power-adjustable mas saging front seats and driver’s seat memory settings. Standout is the easy-to-use Volvo Sensus in fotainment system with neatly ar ranged menus, and sharp graph ics. The cool Orrefors crystal shift lever is a crowning touch, while the tremendous sounding audio phile Bowers & Wilkins audio will blow your socks off! Rear seat oc cupants have limo –like legroom, a huge central armrest, and their own controls in addition to heated and cooled seats. For 2022, Volvo’s “Recharge” name arrives in the Swedish com pany’s line-up, representing a strategy to get at least a million Volvo electrified vehicles on the road by 2025. “The Recharge” moniker signifies either fully battery-electric, (EV) or plug-in hybrid (PHEV) vehicles.
The Volvo S90 is a luxurious and practical premium vehicle - a good alternative to more fuel thirsty SUVs or crossovers, but still offers a cavernous and versatile interior. Downsides are few, the S90 is expensive when loaded with options and that is about it. Fuel consumption is fair, and you will need a proper level 2 charger to extract a decent charge time. Gorgeous looking, rare, sleek, the Volvo S90 Recharge is a wonder ful car to drive and own.

For 2022, the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe continues with a few changes. For the uninitiated, the GT series is a high performance, fully loaded luxury grand tourer with the attending Mercedes AMG mystique. Available in GT 53 and GT 43 AMG versions, they arrive with a series of cosmetic changes and other upgrades bringing even more style and gravitas. The hunched crouch ing stance, powerful rear haunches and the Panamericana vertical-slat front grille all add to the attraction. 2022 updates include new ex terior colours for all models: and a larger choice of special AMG wheels. Interior changes include more personalization options— such as exclusive Nappa leather in grey titanium pearl/black with con trasting top stitching. Trim choices include new optional anthracite open-pore wood for the instrument panel, door panels and centre con sole. There is also a newly designed, flat-bottom AMG Performance steering wheel with revised con trols. It includes a sensor mat so if the driver does not have their hands on the steering wheel for a certain time, a warning system is enacted. Emergency Brake Assist will step in if the driver remains inactive. Also on the safety front, a surround-view camera is now standard and finally a new five-seat option featuring a rear bench seat is also available.

The system uses voice or touch control to call up information, operate climate, audio, or other functions with a simple “Hey, Mercedes” voice com mandRearprompt.passengers also enjoy a comfortable, well finished classy cabin with decent enough leg room. It’s good to see there is now a rear three- seat bench option for more flexibility. Despite its rakish roofline, the rear hatchback door allows for decent cargo space, plus the rear seats can be folded for moreOnroom.the road, the GT 4-Door Coupe’s engine feels strong and re sponsive and is incredibly smooth. Acceleration is very quick, with a willing thrill from the rev happy inline six-cylinder engine. Standard all-wheel drive means plenty of traction, and the programmable modes aid in providing good driver satisfaction. All modes, including

trolled adjustable damping system that’s more responsive and finely tuned to different road and driving conditions. The result is a smoother ride in Comfort mode and more dynamics control in Sport+ mode. You can further fine tune the set tings by three stages via a dedi cated button. In Comfort mode, the GT53 is docile and relaxing to drive. In Sport Plus, the GT53’s AMG en gineering really shines with a well planted and super stable demean our allowing for very quick corner exits. Estimated Fuel Economy if you must know is City/12.3 L/100 km. Highway/9.4 L/100 km.
Downsides are few, the perfor mance Mercedes- Benz E-Class and CLS sedans are also on the same page in terms of features and performance, and perhaps the GT53 needs a bit more definition in the range. Some may also lament the big dog V8 engine option is no more. Other wise the GT53 highly impresses in being a very quick premium, standout performer sport sedan, well deserving of the AMG badge.

If an apple a day is not your thing, you might be surprised to learn that supplements offer a convenient alternative packed with health
WE write about natural remedies we believe are good for human health. Why this focus? It’s not to encourage avoidance of pharmaceuti cal drugs when medical care is an imperative. To the contrary, Canadians and Americans have the luxury of the world’s best doctors, medicinal drugs, and healthcare facilities. But health systems are overwhelmed. To ease the crush, people who are not yet ill should take up responsibility to stay healthy. Good health is not achieved through inac tion. Live a poor lifestyle and illness will come as sure as night follows day. But the talents of doctors and the cure of drugs are best re served for the unlucky who lose the health lottery. For young people and the healthy ag ing population, a proactive, protective stance should be the default position. What better way to achieve this than by adopting natural Let’sapproaches?takeaclassic example: the hearty apple.
The scientific consensus is clear. Apples con tain a lot of good things.
Scientists are now exploring fascinating new dimensions of nutrition and food. For example, let’s look at the phytochemical compounds in apples, called polyphenols, known predomi nantly for their antioxidant qualities.
Other studies are exploring whether the addi tion of apple polyphenols to cured and smoked meats like bacon, can help reduce carcino genic risks. The idea is to use natural antioxi dants to reduce oxidation and nitrite additives in processed meats to improve safety.
It’s long been said, an apple a day keeps the doctor away. References can be found as far back as Plato! But what does the modern sci entific community have to say about apples?
What are some of the findings?
First, they are packed with macronutrients in cluding sugars, fibers, pectin, fat and proteins. They contain malic and citric acids, which are organic acids required for health digestion. The have C, E, and B-complex vitamins. And they have minerals such as potassium, calci um, nitrogen, and magnesium.
Several studies have shown that apple poly phenols can reduce body weight and inflam mation. But a new study on mice has dem onstrated that apple polyphenols prevent loss of bone mass induced by obesity, which has potential implications for the prevention and treatment of obesity-related osteoporosis.

benefits. The polyphenol content of young apples found in supplements can be ten times higher than in the fresh fruit found in grocery stores. Look for ApplePhenon as an ingredi
It might stun you to know that scientists have published over 65,700 articles on apples in the past 50 years, available on the peer-reviewed scientific database, Scopus. The National Insti tutes of Health in the U.S. houses a massive open-source repository of research in its Na tional Library of Medicine. Since 1997, using the web address PubMed.gov, anyone can search the database.

Still other studies are looking at how apple polyphenols perform in the digestive systems of adults as compared to aging seniors. They have found that as people age, their digestive systems fail to absorb the benefits of some foods. This means we should pay close atten tion to supplements offering improved bioaccessibility of key nutrients.
So far, in 2022, it was easy to find nearly 100 studies published by scientists around the world investigating the properties of apple polyphenols. Twenty years ago, only 13 such studies were published. Collectively between 2002 and today, PubMed provides access to over one thousand studies on apple poly phenols. Don’t let anyone tell you that natural products are not being researched!
