Editor Views Haunted Objects Does it or it doesn't, an object having some type of connection or life line to the spirit world. Are there ways to really find out the more information about the paranormal when an object has a spiritual attachment? When you think of an object that is haunted, what is the first object that comes to your mind? For me, that would a doll. I really don’t remember playing with dolls when I was younger. But if I had a doll and if that doll had a spirit attachment, and did some weird stuff, I would totally freak out and never play with any dolls again, ever. Now in my earlier issues, I have talked and shared about most of my experiences at our old house. And yes that house was very much haunted. Nevertheless, that did not detour us from living our lives normally, or what we thought was normal. Could there have been some type of spirit attachment to something from my grandmothers’ antiques, or any of our mother’s possessions? It would be interesting to find out, now that there might be a more of comfortable way of settling unrested souls, if there was a spiritual attachment to an object. But to be totally honest with you, knowing what I personally experienced, I tend to think that unrested soul had no attachment to my grandmother’s or my mom’s possessions. That spirit could have an attachment to the land, since that area was within a timeframe when the Pinellas Infantry and the Seminole Indians fought back in the 1800’s. Could there be artifacts buried deep beneath the dirt on that property? I believe so. The land and what holds beneath the soil, from an object to the blood that bled could very well grasp the energy of that lost soul. Would you think that the earth is keeping that spirit grounded and/or locked? Maybe. This may possibly have a more logical explanation to why some places have some type of paranormal experiences. So what do you do? Learn about the history of your location, are there any items that you have in your home or building
Page 4
that are old or even from another country that you brought into your space? This might be an answer for you to look into or request someone to look into for you, if any experiences or activity starts to happen. It could very well be something new that came into your space, or something someone gave you. You can also look into the land and the surrounding areas. You might be surprised what actually happen on the property you live on now hundreds of years ago. If you found something that might be causing activity within your space, from what I researched you can bury it, toss it in water or give it away. However, I personally have not experienced any paranormal activity with any of the items I have in our home, I do know that you need to give that object that might have a spiritual attachment some form of peace. You can say a prayer or even whispering peaceful words, just something that you can give it closure. But still the question resides, how could an object have a spiritual attachment when in most paranormal cases, when a person/or animal dies, it is that location that has a haunting. Could the answer be as simple as just an emotion? For example, love, anger, revenge, guilt, loss that is embedded to that object?
Voices to Visions / September 2012
Think about how much energy that item holds. How much emotion, distress, sadness and even anger that had been brought out through each drip of sweat that soaked within the metal of that collar when that man was wearing that thing around his neck. Could this be classified as an imprint of time? The more we think about spirits having an attachment to an object; more items could have a stronger personal attachment, even if that object is over hundreds of years old.
I keep for some reason going back to this image where Don and I were staying in Boone, North Carolina. We visited some antique shops and for the life of me, I cannot understand why I am visualizing this object in my head. This was around three years ago. I remember walking into this huge antique store; I was interested in vintage post cards and old photographs. But this object has been embedded in my brain forever. I picked up this metal object; I am looking at it trying to figure out what it was. My first thought was that it was a neck clamp for the cows or bulls when they had to pull the carts from behind them, but looking at it more and more this neck piece was way too small. Then it hit me. It was a slave collar. It had embossed engraving on the collar and I remember it stated the words “slave” and the word “owner”. I can’t remember what else it said. My emotion was filled with sadness and angry at the same time. Would you think an object like that would have some type of spirit attachment? I am pretty sure that there would be quite a few.
Page 5
Just think about the museums that are either local in your neighborhood, to the much larger scale museums. Remember looking at that hair brush someone used back in the 1800’s. Deep embedded in those bristles maybe holding strands of hair from the little child or adult that used it. The glass goblet that someone toasted with their guests may have within the glass fingerprints, as well as a drop of saliva from when that person took a sip of wine. The shoes, the shoes that were laced up and shined maybe carrying all the memories of each step that walked so many miles, or danced at the newest social event of the night. Then there are mirrors, the oblong mirror with the wood frame, the mirror that the little girl used to look into when she would dance around feeling so pretty with her new dress on. Smiling and laughing. Or the new bride putting on her wedding dress for the first time, as her mother put layers of baby’s breath in her braids. The happy moments the mirror catches, the laugher, the joy. Could those moments be imprinted within the mirror? I know that I would love to have some type of spirit life line to my mom, and as the tears start to fill my eyes, I know with every object I have of hers within our home, every picture I have facing me right now, she is watching over me. Always. ~alice

hell or a heaven and where does this energy or soul go once it leaves the physical body. These are my driving forces and passion that helps me to try to understand. There is so much that we don’t quite understand and this keeps me searching on where the physical energy goes after we pass away. And being in this field and being involved with so many things for over forty years, there is no doubt that there are things we just do not comprehend. I also try to figure out and understand not only from a spiritual perceptive but a scientific view as well. With the scientific end of this, if we could get repeatability, from our evidence, such as evps, that would be substantial for the paranormal community. About John Zaffis John has been searching for answers about the paranormal for over 40 years. From conducting paranormal investigations, educating not only for himself but others that are also seeking knowledge about the reality of the unknown. He has also gained knowledge standing side by side with his Aunt and Uncle, Ed and Lorraine Warren, by understanding the attributes of demonology. Still very much active in his own paranormal group PRSNE, John splits his time on SYFY’s paranormal reality show, The Haunted Collector, guest appearances on other reality shows to lecturing those whom wish to be educated on paranormal phenomena. My interview with John Zaffis It was a great honor to have been able to speak to Mr. Zaffis and for him take time out to answer some questions that I had along with some questions my sister, Tara had as well. ¤: Investigating into the paranormal for over forty years is there just one simple passion that keeps you driven to seek the unknown, and what is that passion? The key thing that keeps me going as far as the paranormal, is trying to get answers and understand the differences of what happens out there, interpreting if there is actually a
Page 8
¤: At what time in your paranormal experience did you detour yourself away from investigating “shall I say normal” paranormal research to focusing solely on objects that may or may not have a spiritual attachment? With my career, I am still very much active with my paranormal group conducting investigation on “regular hauntings”, as well as working with demonology cases. The show, “Haunted Collector” is just one of many sections of my career. ¤: For this issue we are talking about haunted objects. What object and location would be your most influential case you have ever investigated? That would be the statue of Mary, from the experience I had in Connecticut, which in turned became a movie, “The Haunting in Connecticut.” Our original investigation, there were many relics placed around the home. As we were leaving, the clergy went to pick up this plastic statue of Mary, and her hands were melted off. Here was this monumental item, which had very little value, but to me it was very personal and represents a lot to me.

¤: Working with family members gives more drive to each and every investigation. How does your son and daughter, in your view, feel about this direction into collecting haunted objects? When it comes to my son and daughter being involved with the TV show, has given them insight to what I do. They are getting a better grasp of this. I have always kept them distance; however, they have gone on investigations with me in the past. My daughter, Amiee, loves doing the research and digging into the history of different locations, and my son, Chris, has attended some investigation with me in the past. When the opportunity to work with me for the show, they realized how much time I put into this type of work and they now understood why I was gone at a lengths time. They have gain so much knowledge working with me and now have a greater understanding with the different types of cases I am involved with. They now look at my career differently than before. ¤: When there is a client that is experiencing paranormal activity had contacted you and you do come across an object that may or may not have a spirit connection, you ask the client what they want to do with that object. How often does that client keep that object? When we are able to actual determining that it is an object that is causing the haunting, nine out of ten times the client wants that item removed. They really do not want any type of activity around their home and they want peace within their home. Before we actually do get involved, if the client thinks it is a particular item, I suggest that they remove that item from their home and see if any activity occurs after removing it, however if they bring that item back in and the activity reoccurs and/or increases, that tells me it could be that object. Most people really do not want to deal with this, especially if that object has any type of negative attachment to it. On the other hand, if we are dealing with something more personal, such as an item that has been in the family, a family heirloom, I recommend to place it in a sealed
Page 10
location, such as a safety deposit box, or actually give it to another family member. *** At this point in my interview.. I want to share something with you.. I asked Mr. Zaffis about the thirty days. He explained what that meant, and all I was thinking about was the 1800’s silver teether. Remember that episode? He then proceeded to talk about The Kings Tavern. I didn’t mention that to him and I remember he asked other clients before about him holding on to that object for thirty days. So how did he know that I was referring to that episode? Strange.. He also shared with me that the owner of the Kings Tavern became ill. I am so sorry to have heard that and all of us do wish him well. * Update* He has passed on and we hope there is joy, love and peace within him and his family. ¤: Stated on your website, before any object you have collected from a case is place into your museum, that object/s goes through a binding ritual. Could you please explain what this entails? A lot of times even when we are filming, there are different types of prayers that I do, there are times I would use sea salt and holy water. Also, depending on the belief system that item was tied into, there are differently things I do to try to break the energy with the item or actually bind to the item so it is not causing any more problems. In my building where I have all these different items, I try to bind that energy to that object by performing rituals and place them into a glass case or other types of cases, so it is not causing any more problems for those people. I place them in cases so people do not touch them and break that binding that I did over that item; however there are some occasions where people have touched the item, which broke the binding that I did and made the activity even worse.

particular circumstances would always tie in with cremation. Last question: If there was a way for you to communicate through an open line to a spirit that is unrested, what location (anywhere in the world) would you like to have this connection, and what are the three main questions you would like answers to? I would have to go back to where I had my first experience when I was a teen, and it was at the Hill of Seven ¤: On your website you also stated that burning or destroying a haunted object is not good due to harmful repercussion that could come to that person. But you also stated that if you come across a particular object, throwing it in a body of water will help. What are the differences of placing a haunted object in fire and in water?
Angels.
There are two methods I always recommend. Never burn or break an item. Because it there is energy attached to that item, it would gravitate right towards you. If you want to
If the opportunity ever presented itself again, I would like to go back to the hill of seven angels and to find out if several people that are no longer with us here in the world, knowing that they are okay and that they are with other family members and friends. I think that is most important to me, is knowing that people I really love and really care about are okay and how they could share with me those answers.
dispose of that item, to throw it into a body of water or bury it. Doing this would seal the energy with that object and it would gravitate away from you. Those are the two methods I always recommend to people, I still do this today. If there are items I do not want to bring back to the museum, I would bury that object or throw that object into a body of water. B: However, could this also have an effect towards a human and/or pet being subjected to cremation when someone close is holding on to a personal item? Do I feel that cremation would hold onto a type of energy? It is one of those million dollar questions. I can’t really say that this could be on a negative level. I can’t say that those

Psychometry: Interpreting The Energy Imprinted on Objects By Cheryl Smeed Have you ever touched someone or something and gotten some kind of message–either ideas, pictures, or words? Have you ever been to an estate sale or antique shop— wherever there was old furniture or objects and felt certain vibrations or got some impressions from them? All objects contain energy. They can contain the energy of those who have owned the objects, energy picked up from the objects' environment, energy from catastrophic events; all patterns of the objects' past experiences, the soul of the object. Psychometry is the art of interpreting the energy imprinted upon the objects. Theosophists and occultists from the earliest times have held that every object in the world receives and keeps all impressions, not only of all objects that it comes in contact with, but also of all that happens to it or around it, that these impressions are indelible and can be transferred to anyone holding the object. Therefore, if we possess a piece of stone from the Roman Forum, we can reproduce to the mind, as clearly as a picture, all that happened in the Forum.
Page 14
A few years ago on a trip I had taken out west, I collected a few rocks from the site of a famous Native American Indian slaughter that had taken place during the 19th century. Holding one of them in my hand, not only could I feel the horrendous energy of that time, but an apparition of a Native American appeared before me with a message about the event—that the event, as horrific as it may have appeared, was necessary for the lessons that came to all who were involved, including those doing the killing to those who were killed. He went on to extoll the importance of our appreciation of the land and the love of every creature upon it for this and future generations. All of that came from a rock. I took these rocks to my Psychometry workshop and had my students tell what kind of impressions they got. Most of them identified the negative energy, some even described an Indian massacre. And that was after several students had passed the rocks around, thus imprinting their own energies upon them. Another example is about a man who took a piece of the linen wrapping of an Egyptian ibis found on the breast of a mummy. He handed it, wrapped up in tissue-paper, to a friend who did not know what, if anything, was in the paper. He put it to his forehead and soon began to describe Egyptian scenery; then an ancient city; from that he went on to describe a man in Egyptian clothes sailing on a river; then that this man went ashore into a grove where he killed a bird; then that the bird looked like pictures of an ibis, and ended by describing the man as returning with the bird to the city, the description of which tallied with the picture and description of ancient Egyptian cities. Psychometrists often assist law enforcement organizations in finding lost children by holding a favorite toy or clothing item belonging to the child. In one instance, I was able to help a client find their lost dog when it slipped it's collar. By
Voices to Visions / September 2012
holding the collar, I could see what the dog was seeing and was able to describe the area where the dog was. As soon as someone touches an item, enters a place or country, their spiritual and emotional imprint is left behind. And if they have an emotional attachment to a place or belonging, then it is easy to follow the emotional line. The psychometrist is able to follow this connection back to the person, and sometimes back into their past lives. There are three kinds of psychometry: object, location, and person. They overlap often, as there are not always clearly defined borders. Object Psychometry Some common items used in psychometry are rings, bracelets, necklaces, earrings and watches. Any of these items will hold information about the wearer, such as thoughts, emotional state, and sufficient events affecting the owner's life. A story unfolds that describes not only the events of the person's life, but also how he or she is feeling, thinking and reacting to these events. Location Psychometry When I picked up those rocks out west, I received the information while I was sitting in the very location of the event. Haunted dwellings and other locations can hold the energy of people who lived there and events that took place in those locations. When I visited a jail that housed famous outlaws in the Kansas City area, I felt the energy of the jail cells and nearly became physically ill. On a lighter note, on the occasions I visited famous haunted mansions where
Page 15
people were happy and parties were plenty, the energy was joyous, lighthearted, and jubilant! Person Psychometry There are two types of person psychometry—in person or by photograph. In person, sometimes you can "read" a person simply by touching them. A photograph of someone may also be used. This technique is known as "picture reading," and is another way to connect to the energy of the person in question. It is especially fun to "read" antique photos to get an idea of how the person lived, felt, and even died. I use this form of psychometry in animal communication when the animal cannot be with me in person. The animal's energy can be picked up through the photograph just like with
Voices to Visions / September 2012
people's photographs. A picture really is worth a thousand words! Now that you have an idea what psychometry is, you can also learn to strengthen your "psychometric muscles." With practice, you can become very proficient at psychometry. Now that you have an idea what psychometry is, you can also learn to strengthen your "psychometric muscles." With practice, you can become very proficient at psychometry. How To Do Psychometry Sit relaxed with your eyes closed and your hands palms up in your lap. Instruct a person to place an object in your hands which they have had in their possession for a long time. Feel the entire object—is it warm or cool? Smooth or rough? Does it seem to "vibrate?" Tune in to the object. Relate everything that you see in your mind, think of, hear in your head and also any feelings that you have while holding the object. Relax and let the images flow through your mind. You might want to stop and write them down. You might feel emotions from the object like love, anger, joy, etc. You might even get a story. You may pick up some thoughts and feelings that seem meaningless to you but keep talking as much as possible about what is in your mind and you may be amazed at how much is relevant to the owner of the object. Sometimes while practicing psychometry, the feelings associated with the object are vague and don't seem to bear much relevance to anything recognizable to the owner of the object. On other occasions the opposite is the case and intricate details can be discerned. One day while a group of friends were practicing, one person was surprised when told that the reader could see a black and white dog. He was able to describe it in great detail and she confirmed that she did, in fact, have a black and white dog which exactly matched the description.
Page 16
A fun exercise to do with a group is to have everyone place a personal object into a bowl without seeing what each person is placing in the bowl. One person can hold the bowl above the view of the group and one at a time, each person can reach in and take out an object making sure it's not their own. Each person may then share any impressions they get from the object, including who they feel the object belongs to. Do not be concerned if you do not immediately get impressions from objects. Everyone has a different experience. For some, psychometry comes easily. For others, it must be practiced. However you choose to proceed, psychometry can become a very useful tool in your psychic development.

There were two places that I wanted to try this new device. One was the May Stringer house in Brooksville and the other place is at the Clay County Jail in Green Coves Springs. The following are my results and opinions based on my experience using this device. Remember, not all things work for everyone. This may work for you and your group; then again, it may not Testing at the May Stringer House
The Spirit Box
Bonnie is such a wonderful woman and has given us so much time to do our research and testing new ideas and devices at the May Stringer House and I thank her from the bottom of my heart for putting up with me. She truly loves everything about that house and has such a deeper understanding, a deeper passion, and a deeper connection to this house more than anyone would comprehend. She has the utmost respect towards the spirits that have chosen to stay on in that house. I admire her strength, agility and love.
After so much time debating to purchase this product, I finally broke down and bought it. Like most of you, it was out of curiosity and wanting to know if this actually worked. Could this be another way for us to find out specific details about how spirits exist? Could we learn more about who they are, and why they still linger in this time?
I had my mother-n-law accompanying me during this testing. She was videotaping while I laid out three digital recorders in the house. One was placed in the threshold of the kitchen and the military room; one was placed on the mantel in the bedroom upstairs and the other one we placed on top of the stair railing.
I have read about this P-SB7 Spirit box, and have listen to some of the recordings that were captured using this device as well as seeing this being used in the reality shows. As an editor, I have to test out new things, in order to give you a personal account of my experiences and my final conclusions.
The one thing that I did different was I bought a different external speaker, a $13.00 speaker from Toy-r-us, instead of shelling out $50.00 for the same type of speaker, which pretty much does the same thing.
Page 17
We went upstairs and stood in the hallway. I turned the spirit box on and it was extremely loud.. LOUD! It was annoying
Voices to Visions / September 2012
and frustrating. I worked through the noise and asked questions. When I was using this I thought up a couple of things that question the authenticity of communicating with the spirits with the spirit box. One is manipulation and two is deceiving. Manipulate: 1: to treat or operate with or as if with the hands or by mechanical means especially in a skillful manner 2 a: to manage or utilize skillfully b: to control or play upon by artful, unfair, or insidious means especially to one's own advantage 3: to change by artful or unfair means so as to serve one's purpose
How I feel this device is manipulative. First would be all the hype that people have given this device as another form of communicating with the spirits. My personal experience and my opinion, I am really up in the air with this one. I wonder if this actually hurts them, since you can hear the responses on the digital recorder and also with your own ears, would this irritate them even more. Well, on the digital recorder we got this faint EVP: Turn it off. So, are we searching and trying too hard to communicate and overlooking just a simpler way of communicating? ******************************************* You are also, and most likely not even aware that you are doing this, but when you ask a question you are waiting to hear the answer or some word that might be close to the answer. So when that frequency actually hits a word, you assume that that is the answer you are getting from a spirit. I have done this myself. And that is why I use the word deceiving (misleading: liable or meant to deceive or mislead) to describe what may or may not happen when you use this device.
Page 18
We did not hear anything concrete coming from the spirit box in the hallway. So we ventured to the attic, we did capture some evps during that time when we were using the spirit box; however, it was captured on our digital recorder and not traveled by frequency from the spirit box. You can hear our evps here: http://dustandshadows.net/ ~alice .
Voices to Visions / September 2012
I was hoping to connect as much as we did from our experiences last year. LINK. But as always in any investigation with the paranormal, it’s a hit or miss. It makes me wonder, when we do conduct research investigations we always hear, “oh yeah, they got tons of interaction last night with so and so, does this become a routine. Do the spirits know what is going to happen at this time on this date? The lights are off, now let us put on a show? It just makes me wonder. After downloading the recordings to my computer, we did pick up some evps through our digital recorders and not the spirit box.
The Clay County Jail. God, do I love that jail. I love the essence and environment of this place. As far as anything concrete during this experiment, we got nothing from the spirit box. However we did capture some recordings on our digital recorders. I ran three recorders, two downstairs and one upstairs. *hint: if you are going to do any recording, place one of your recorders in the threshold of the second floor going to the cells.
Some were really hard to diagnose and some were even whispers. There are sounds that seem to be those of the jail cell doors opening and/or closing, but they are too hard for me to distinguish and those are from when no one was in the jail. There are also banging noises, sounds that could be determined as someone walking up or down the stairs, and let me tell you these are metal not wood stairs, but knowing the traffic and the railroad tracks right in front of the building, I more or less took some of those noises as echoes being recorded. You can hear the evps here: Dust and Shadows Did I give the spirit box enough of a chance? Perhaps. ~alice

staying in, the Blue Room and also the first floor room called the New Room, just in case. As Don and I stood at the end of the stairway, while Pat talked to us about the history of the house and about some of the paranormal groups that have conducted an investigation within their Bed and Breakfast. The two groups were called CAPE and Local Haunts. She shared with us some of the historical information about the house and experiences with the paranormal groups. Built back in the late 1800’s Dr. Applegate used the house for patrons when visiting the sulfur springs, after his death his wife stayed at the house until till her death at the Qui-Si-Sana. Changing hands over the years, once as Antique store, it now resides to the Sickles.
The River Park Inn While we were in Green Coves Springs, we decided to stay overnight at a local Bed and Breakfast, the River Park Inn. Stationed on a corner lot of Magnolia and Spring Street is this 100 year old house, which holds so much historical value for the city of Green Coves Springs. Changing many owners through its lifetime, it now has settled to the current owners Patricia and Dale Sickles. Turning the house into an operational bed and breakfast, the renovation did turn up some unusual finds. One in particular that caught my attention and still does was the photo that Pat found in the attic. This photo was of a little boy sitting on the front porch that could have dated back in the early 1900’s. I wasn’t interested in conducting a full investigation, however, I did place recorders in the room that we were
Page 22
When Pat told us about the one of the paranormal groups’ member who happened to be “medium”, they told her there was a little girl that stayed in the New Room, and liked to pull on the sheets. But remembering that photo of the little boy that was found in the attic, I am tending to think if any child staying at the B&B, it just might be him. Vishi, who also works at the Clay County Archives and Jail as a volunteer and conducts tours, is involved with the paranormal group CAPE, conducted an investigation at the B&B. Don and I first met Vishi at the Jail and immediately became connected. She is extremely through with any historical background information with all the investigation that her group conducts and she even goes as far back as census and court documents. Pat let us view the video and all the information that these two groups concluded in their investigation. As far as organization, Vishi was right on. She had so much detail in her research Pat had to rubber band the folder together to keep all the paperwork from falling out.

As far as listening to their evps, even on my laptop, it was really hard to make out the recordings. However, knowing Vishi and her love and trust towards the spirit world, I have no doubt that she collected some type of paranormal evidence. Now on to Local Haunts. Don put the video in the TV and we watched up to the part when their investigation took them to the room we were sleeping in. As the video was showing the investigators in the bathroom, one of the investigators asked if the spirit watched him go to the bathroom, we turned it off. After listening to hours and hours of recordings from all three recorders, there was nothing recorded from any of the bedrooms. Pat and her husband along with their two dogs do love this house. They put so much time and love into renovation and making this a beautiful Bed and Breakfast for everyone to enjoy. I do suggest anyone that would love to get away for a night, stay at the River Park Inn. Take a dip in the spring feed pool and go fishing of the pier. Just relax. Don and I want to thank Pat and her husband, Dale for the wonderful hospitality they gave us. We are definitely going to stay there again in the future and most likely when traveling through to St. Augustine, we will say hello. ~alice

* From reading selected segments of your book, it is hard for me to weigh the facts about your personal belief in the paranormal. Have you personally investigated areas of “hot spots” you have stated in your book? If so, please share those experiences. If you read the whole book, you’ll appreciate that while I approach the subject with some caution, I do believe in the reality of paranormal phenomena. Although I can’t be sure of what’s behind such manifestations, I discuss theories and make plenty of tentative suggestions (e.g. the idea that some sort of higher intelligence might be responsible for orchestrating UFO events and other paranormal effects).
Interview with Peter McCue * Tell our readers about you and what made you interested in the paranormal. I’m 64. My father was Scottish, but of Irish descent, and my mother is English. I was born in England, but I’ve spent a lot of my adult life in Scotland, which is my favorite part of the British Isles. It’s where I currently live. I worked for about 30 years as a clinical psychologist, and my Ph.D., awarded in 1985, was for a thesis based on research into the nature of hypnosis. My interest in the paranormal goes back to my teens, or even earlier, but was relatively dormant throughout the 1970s, 80s and early 90s. It became strong again around 1996, and has remained so since. * Let us talk about your book, Zones of Strangeness. What prompt you to write about paranormal experiences to UFO sightings? For a long time, I’ve been interested in the notion of anomaly hot spots. Having researched the subject, I thought it would be good to write a book about the matter. But it turned out to be a longer and more arduous task than I expected.
Page 25
My research into these alleged hot spots has entailed reading about reported experiences, and communicating with witnesses and other researchers. In respect of many of the British locations, I’ve visited the localities. In weighing the evidence, I’ve had to take into account problems such as conflicting testimony, and the possibility that some reports have been fabricated or exaggerated. * “ ..they have significant implications for the way we understand ourselves and the nature of reality.” Quoted from Chapter 2 first paragraph, understanding your references may or may not have come from a personal experience, can you elaborate on the meaning of implications? Many people in mainstream, science-based professions seem to adhere to a materialistic interpretation of the universe. For example, they assume that consciousness is a by-product of electro-chemical processes in the central nervous system, and that it couldn’t possibly survive physical death. Paranormal phenomena seem to challenge that viewpoint. Maybe that’s one reason why many mainstream scientists don’t want to look at the evidence! Another factor, with some, might be a fear that they would be ostracized by their conservative and orthodox colleagues if they displayed an interest in the paranormal. Indeed, in some professions (e.g. clinical psychology), it might be safer not to mention such an interest in one’s CV!

* Within chapter two you derived segments from David Fontana’s and George Nugent Merle Tyrrell research, belief and/or perceptions. What area in their research do you relate to and what area of the paranormal you do not relate to? Evidence for extrasensory perception (ESP) and psychokinesis (PK) could be seen as a challenge to the materialist view that mental activity is a by-product of electro-chemical processes in the nervous system. If consciousness transcends brain activity and can exist independently of it, there might well be some form of survival after bodily death. Over the years, many commentators, such as the recently deceased Professor David Fontana (author of an interesting book called Is There an Afterlife?), have argued that the evidence from psychical research favors the notion of survival, and that communication between the living and the dead is a reality. Paradoxically, though, the existence of ESP makes it difficult to evaluate the evidence for survival. Imagine, for example, that you received accurate and highly detailed information from a medium who claimed to be in touch with your deceased grandfather. One possibility would be that the medium had unwittingly tapped into your memories via telepathy, or had obtained information about your grandfather from elsewhere via ESP. This interpretation is sometimes called the ‘super-ESP theory’. In his book, Fontana discussed problems that he saw with the super-ESP argument. He favored the survival theory. However, I would argue that the choice isn’t between superESP and survival, but between super-ESP without survival and super-ESP with survival, since even seemingly straightforward instances of spirit communication imply considerable psychic powers on the part of the deceased. Imagine, for instance, that a medium relays an unusually accurate message to someone at a meeting. For the sake of argument, let’s call the recipient Mary and assume that the communicator is her deceased father, John. Now, how does John know that Mary is at the meeting and that there’s a medium present? Has John been keeping tabs on Mary from the other side of the grave? Is he able to scan her diary,
Page 26
using clairvoyance, to somehow listen in to her conversations, or to read her mind telepathically? Or does he follow her about in a disembodied state or in an astral body, like an obsessed and shadowy stalker? That, too, would require ESP, since he would no longer have physical senses. And for John and the medium to communicate with each other, there would presumably have to be a telepathic link between them. According to the notion of super-ESP without survival, a living person can unconsciously gather information via ESP and then mistakenly assume that it has come from the spirit of someone departed. An alternative possibility, and one that I think is worth taking seriously, is that a manipulative and resourceful higher intelligence is the source of the information. In fact, in my book, I suggest that a wide range of paranormal phenomena (including UFO sightings) could be theatrical performances orchestrated by a higher intelligence. It’s not necessary to assume that this intelligence comes from elsewhere – another place, ‘another dimension’ or another time. It may have always been here.
The British psychical researcher G. N. M. Tyrrell concluded that paranormal apparitional experiences were hallucinatory events. He suggested that they involved telepathy, occurring at a subconscious level, between two or more people. In the case of apparitional hauntings, for example, he suggested that ‘brooding reminiscence’ on the part of the surviving self of a deceased person could affect the minds of people occupying a place that was formerly inhabited by the
Voices to Visions / September 2012
deceased individual, causing them to hallucinate an apparition of the dead person (i.e. see a ghost).
about a UFO experience that he’d had while driving in the locality.
Tyrrell’s writings have been influential in my own thinking about paranormal phenomena. However, with regard to hauntings, I think there are problems. For example, many cases involve physical manifestations in addition to apparitions.
In Chapter 8, I discuss anomalous events that allegedly occurred in south-west Wales in the 1970s. The reported phenomena included, among other things, sightings of UFOs and humanoids. I looked at various sources and found contradictory versions of some of the stories. In some instances, reports were no doubt fabricated or exaggerated. However, I don’t think this entitles us to say that nothing genuinely paranormal occurred there.
* With so many occurrences you have stated in your book, Zones of Strangeness, which story made you really think twice about the paranormal and which story made you turn away? An intriguing case discussed in Chapter 16 of my book is that of the so-called Skinwalker Ranch in Utah. It was the subject of a book, called Hunt for the Skinwalker, published in 2005. The authors, Dr. Colm Kelleher and George Knapp, described a wide range of bizarre phenomena that had allegedly occurred there (UFO sightings, sightings of strange animals, cattle mutilations, etc.). There have been questions about the accuracy of some of the things in the book, but that general part of Utah seems to have been something of a UFO hot spot over the years, albeit perhaps on an intermittent basis. An acquaintance of mine told me
Page 27
* The afterlife is considered mostly of what people believe it to be, therefore it can be a place of beauty or a place of destruction or what have you. Describe to us what your afterlife would be. I wouldn’t be surprised if there isn’t an afterlife. But, on balance, I suspect that there is one. However, as I’ve already said, I think that the evidence for survival is open to different interpretations. Consequently, we may have to wait until we go through the ‘checkout’ before we know for sure. If there is an afterlife, I hope I won’t be judged too harshly for the errors I’ve made in this life!

When I contacted Vishi to test out spirit box at the jail, she told me that members from the GHI were going to be there and that she could get me in. I looked at the company that promoted this event and my first thought, this would be such a great opportunity to meet some known people in the field. But then my gut started turning and my inner self was saying: “Alice, this is what you don’t like. How far will the drama go and how real with the sincerity be? So, that is a risk I do not want to take. I know it will upset me if I see or hear anyone disrespect those spirits. Regardless of their pass history, some have no way to defend themselves. And if by any chance they do, what do you think people label them as. Right?
I did only read segments of Mr. McCue’s book that pertained to ghosts and hauntings. There are good selections of personal experiences and eye witness accounts of paranormal experiences. He also talks about other ways to accept any reasoning for paranormal phenomena, if so considered paranormal. There is one reasonable explanation that I never heard before. That explanation is JOTT, Just one of the things. Absolutely perfect! This makes more sense to me than anything I have researched. It is just a basic explanation of why spirits exists. It’s just one of those things. Simple. Do we have to go so far in mathematics or technical references that we forget that these spirits were people. They lived and breathed just like us. And there are people that are out there for other reasons and disrespect them. And for what? Why? Can someone tell me how are they helping these spirits?
Page 28
I understand about the media. I understand without the drama or exhausted exaggeration, people are not going to watch or be interested in future engagements. However, are some people so under guided by the celebrity’s status and those who have become that, forgetting who and what this is all about? It’s not about you; it’s not about what experiences you encounter and getting pissed off because you didn’t experience anything or they didn’t answer to your command or question. It’s about finding out a way to communicate, finding answers, building a way to a relationship, a trust and understanding their history, even listening to their story. They might just want to tell you something. Most important is giving them peace. ~alice

experiences with communicating with something that is not of our world. In my daily life I am a professional photographer and blogger and have one of the most popular photography blogs on the internet with an audience of 60-90,000 readers a day. I write every day for my website and that is my #1 passion in life but this year I took my interest in the Paranormal one step further by investing in a few pieces of equipment to test out. I had no idea that my experiences would turn me from 100% skeptic to 100% believer in such a short time nor did I think I would ever get REAL evidence that beats out most of the evidence I have ever seen, anywhere.
* Having that experience as a child is something you just cannot disregard. Would that experience and the experience you had when your father past away a reason for you to pursue if spirits exists?
Interview with Steve Huff * Steve, tell our readers about you. Well, my name is Steve Huff, I am 43 years old and live in Phoenix AZ with my son who is with me half of the time. I live a normal, happy and VERY positive life and am really one of the happiest guys you will ever meet. I have always had an interest in ghosts, spirits and the paranormal but mainly as a skeptic. I always felt a connection in one way or another to this field but I never fully realized the "realness" of it until just recently. Growing up I would always love to read ghost stories, watch scary movies, and scare the hell out of friends but as I grew older I was a skeptic when it came to ghosts or spirits or hauntings. When someone would tell me about a personal experience I would laugh at them, tell them they were crazy and go about my merry way. I always told people that the only way I would believe is if I had an experience or saw a spirit manifest in front of me. Little did I know that when I turned 43 I would be a full 100% believer and not only have an experience, but have daily
Page 29
I think so. After the night when my father passed away and the sink just turning on full blast by itself, hearing the noises and just "feeling" like something was there with me I knew that there may be something beyond this life. I mean, I WANTED there to be something after we die, everyone does, but I never really could believe it fully due to lack of real evidence. After that night I tried and tried to pass it off as coincidence or a failure with the faucet (even though that has never happened before or after that) and I did for several years until just recently. After the experiences I have had over the past few months I now know that was most likely the spirit of my Father that night, in fact, I believe it with 100% of my heart and soul and no one could tell me otherwise because I also feel it.
* With your son by your side, what is your son’s connection with the paranormal? How does he feel about your interest in this and going on investigations with you? My son became interested in this as soon as he heard my 1st ghost box session. He has also always had some interest in
Voices to Visions / September 2012
this field but like me, he couldn't believe it fully until he had his own experience. He decided to sit with me one day while I conducted a spirit box session. When he heard direct responses and my name being called in detail from the spirit box sessions he was hooked. He has his own ghost kit and when he comes by me we take a day and go out to investigate what we can. We can both get EVP's anywhere...and I mean ANYWHERE. We find a ton of EVP's even in restaurants when we go out to eat, almost as if we are being followed. Now that he has had experiences with things moving across his desk, hearing the same voices I have heard (at the same time I do) and even getting photo evidence he is a believer as well. We enjoy working as a team and we both seem to have the same ability to feel, hear and communicate with spirits. It is pretty amazing and I personally feel it is a gift to be able to experience these things.
* The Spirit Box, tell us about your first interest in this equipment and why you wanted to experiment with this. I first became interested in the spirit box after viewing a YouTube video (which I stumbled onto by accident) by a man named Stephen Hill. I thought he was pulling some sort of trickery when I heard direct responses to his questions. Of course I was skeptical because the spirit box basically scans radio frequencies at a high rate of speed. I thought this guy was scamming viewers just to sell his book that he was promoting so I bought a P-SB7 to make my own video and prove it was a scam! When I did my 1st session I heard my name several times and I also had direct responses to my questions. It was at that moment I realized something was happening and it was NOT radio sounds. I would scan on the FM band and pick up ALL voices and full responses to my questions. Over time I would get full sentences and
Page 30
EVP's starting to appear in my recordings. I find the spirit box to be an amazing device for paranormal investigation because no matter what the skeptics say about it, it is the
real deal. Not everyone can get results from it though, and even if you do get results you MUST record your sessions (I record on video) because you will hear 90% of the responses during playback. I continue to experiment with several spirit boxes and get results with all of them, even a manual scan radio that has been working VERY well!
* After having the incident at your own home, how are your feelings about the paranormal and why did you think this would be considered some type of manipulation, self or other. After doing Spirit Box sessions at home for several weeks and months my house started to feel different. The air was "thick" and everyone who came in felt uneasy and not quite right. I was hearing voices out of nowhere (my son heard them as well, same time as I did) and we even heard 2-3 voices having a full conversation in my office one night at around 2am. I had a bag fall off of my kitchen counter and when I asked the spirit box if they did it they replied with a "yes, we pushed it". Anytime I started to record video I would get a male voice talking and then my spirit box would always spurt out things like "we are with the devil", "the devil is coming", "demonic spirit", "trouble", etc. We had
Voices to Visions / September 2012
things turning on by themselves and bangs from my attic. I think whatever was in my house was not very nice and at that time it was indeed scaring us.
At that moment I decided I was done messing with this and I deleted my original YouTube account and all videos on my main hard drive. We did three house cleansings and after we did that the house felt much better. We stopped doing the spirit box sessions and EVP sessions for three weeks and then one day I was recording a video for my photography website when I picked up several EVP's. One said "Thank you" and another said "we miss you". I started to wonder if I drove the evil spirit away and left some good spirits so we started up again and decided to only do one session per week at home and do most of the investigations out of the home. Something seemed to pull me back in, like I was meant to do this for some reason. I felt and feel this with 100% of my heart.
As for manipulation, I feel evil spirits CAN manipulate your mind and we had some of this going on in my home. When I would record an EVP of a male whispering my son would hear it as a man talking. After listening several times we would hear that same EVP change from a whisper, to talking to changing to a female voice. Everyone we let hear it would hear a different voice and I have never come across that, ever. So how could something that is recorded onto video change for whoever listens to it? Not every EVP did that but some did. The male voice I used to catch in my house on a daily basis has been gone ever since the cleansing and we now have a female voice with an English accent, and those EVP's never change from what was recorded. Something to think about.
Page 31
I feel there is a lot going on here that we will never understand because we are not meant to understand it but at the same time it is fascinating to me that I can turn on a video camera and record voices anywhere just by asking questions. It's real and even when skeptics hear my results they can't explain it away. * There are a lot of people that just want to go out there an experience something paranormal and more or less just for fun because they have seen the TV shows. What advice would you give to those people? Well, if you are doing it for fun just be respectful. I do this because I have a genuine passion and energy for it. I am doing it to try and find answers, to see how far this can go and to push the boundaries of what can be done in this field. I have experienced some amazing things over the past six months but at the same time I feel I am doing so for a reason because I have this feeling inside like I must do this and continue with it. Like I said, I do not think everyone can have these experiences and results. I talk to many who buy a spirit box and get no responses at all. Not sure why that is but when I have my sessions the main rule is to respect whoever or whatever it is I am speaking to. I see so many YouTube videos from people who copy the TV shows and act like idiots taunting and yelling at the spirits demanding them to speak. It is ridiculous. Those are the people that think they will become famous if they copy and get results but they have no clue of the realities of any of it. Their "acting" is silly and their results do nothing to give any kind of answers. With all of that said, I understand those who just want to experience something as this is the only way they will ever
Voices to Visions / September 2012
believe there is indeed something to this so I do not really see any harm in experimenting and enjoying this as a hobby... but if you do, please be respectful. I feel if you expel positive energy, love and feelings you will get much better results than those who use anger and taunts. I have also found the more you do this the more things will start to happen. If you are not comfortable with the fact that your house can indeed be inhabited by a spirit from doing spirit box sessions, then do not do them in your home. I feel the spirit box can act as a portal and bring these entities into your home, and when that happens they do NOT want to leave. * If I gave you a chance to talk to someone that has passed away, what three questions would you ask them? I would have so many questions but here are three of them: Are you in a happier place? Do you miss anything in your previous life? Are you reconnected with family and loved ones in the afterlife? Now keep in mind I have asked these questions at cemeteries where I have recorded many EVP's and one cemetery in Southern Illinois I actually had a conversation of sorts with a girl who died when she was 18. She told me to tell her Mother that she will always love her after I asked her if she had a message for anyone. THAT night changed my life because not only did the EVP's come in directly answering my question in a teen girls voice, my s also spurted out her name 6-7 times in a row when I powered it on by her grave. I feel we CAN ask questions of some spirits and some will reply with real answers. Usually if the emotion and love is there, they will respond. Thank you so much for all your time.. No, Thank YOU! I really enjoyed it!

A Haunted Statue By Richard Senate The family was frantic when I got the call. They were haunted by a dark phantom and wanted help to rid their home from the supernatural presence. Such calls are common with me—I am a Ghost Hunter. I interviewed them to gain what information I could, then drove over to the small town of Casitas Springs (Pop. 1,300) just north of Ventura, California. The rural community had a single store that sold bait to fishermen on the way to Lake Casitas and their only claim to fame was that the county singer Johnny Cash once lived here for a time. It wasn't hard to find the house. I interviewed them to gain what information I could, then drove over to the small town of Casitas Springs (Pop. 1,300) just north of Ventura, California. Page 34
When I pulled in I found a huge house, a sort of project that took an old structure and added on rooms and such until it was a rambling one -story home. The large house was explained when the family came out, with their six children ranging from teens to babes in arms. The mother was the first to greet me with profound thanks for coming out. They lead me into the living room of the house with its large fireplace and eclectic furnishings that seemed to come from a variety of Thrift Shops. The TV was on playing a cartoon show. I was taken to the places where the “Thing” was seen, in a dim hallway, by the bathroom, and in the room with the TV set. They described it as a man, dressed in a black shirt and baseball cap. He had a short beard and seemed young. This told me we were not dealing with a shadow figure. I asked about the history of the 74 year old house and found that the owner' father (from whom they rented) had built the house and expanded upon it, and he said that no one had ever died there. The owner was shocked to learn his house was haunted, having grown up there and had no problems. Next, as is my pattern of investigation, I put together a timeline of the events. When was the apparition first seen? I learned that the family had been in the place for two years with no reports of paranormal events in the first year and a half. I asked what had happened six months ago that might have changed things with the family. Finally, I was told that they had purchased a large plaster statue at a swap meet—it stood to one side of the fireplace. When it came into the house everything started, with most of the sightings near the thing. I got up from the couch and looked over the rather crude piece of art. It was almost life-sized gold painted image of a Spanish Conquistador, with a helmet and halberd. The figure had a beard and a set look on his face. An interesting piece but not something I would want in my house. The family is Latino and had traced their roots back to a soldier who fought with Cortez in the conquest of Mexico. Paranormal events started with the acquisition of this statue. I have long heard of furnishings being haunted but this was
Voices to Visions / September 2012
one of my first cases of this. I had investigated a haunted chair once before but that was nothing like this—in fact the owner of the antique chair rather liked the proper Englishman's Ghosts that came with the furnishing. I took notes and made some calls. There was something there and I wanted my team to come out and see what they could find. As is the case, I didn't tell them much about the case and the dark figure that haunted the house. About all I gave them was the address and our plan to meet after 8:00 PM. I have found that giving a team too much information can inhibit the data they collect. I admonished the family to keep mum while my people toured and recorded what they could. My team also included a psychic and, like the others, she too was kept in the dark. After dinner we arrived at the house, my team had stayed in their cars until I arrived—I wanted us to enter together. I recall that it was a hot evening as we walked up the gravel drive to the large porch. The family was there, mostly sitting in the living room curious about what we were going to do. “I feel a man,” whispered the psychic as she came through the door. “It’s a young man; he plays a guitar in a band.” The team fanned out each one with his set tasks, some looking for spirit voices to tape (called EVP) other for emeter readings, still other photographing everything. The psychic was drawn to the hallway and bathroom. At one point she started to shake all over. “The young man is sick,” she said. “I see him throwing up. Did anyone die here?” I told her no, but it would not be the first or last time an owner had lied to me about such things. She was drawn to the living room and after a time she when to the statue. The family was looking at the thing and I feared she may have picked up these clues to focus on the thing. The team re-gathered after an hour and a half. Orbs were gotten around the statue; no EVP was picked up, but some strange readings in the living room and hall. The family told of their late night encounters with the bank in black and how it all started when they brought the stature into the house. The team came to the conclusion (and I agreed) that they should get rid of the thing.
Page 35
We left and retired to the local Denny’s to enjoy a snack and discuss what we had seen and felt at the house—this is another part of our investigations and one that many times are helpful in identifying the identity of the phantom. The next week the family called me and gave me a post visit update. When they were removing the stature, it fell over and broke. It was then that they found it was hollow. There was a cleverly hidden door that gave access to the inside. In the stature were small packets of a white powder! They called the police who took possession of the thing and what proved to be illegal drugs. Once the statue was gone—all paranormal evens stopped. We believe that the statue was a stash for drugs---The ghost was that of a young man who died of a drug overdose and now, still addicted, was seeking his drugs he had hidden so carefully. This only gives evidence that the history of an item can cause a ghost to be stuck to it. So be wary of things you bring into your house—it may well bring something in you do not want! doll and started investigating to see if a spirit was attached to the doll. In finding that spirits truly can attach to dolls I decided to purchase more and investigate further. 3: Why do you feel that there is such a bond with a spirit connecting itself to a certain doll? Some spirits feel a connection with a particular doll because they may have looked similar to the doll in life or actually owned the doll in life or a family member could have owned that doll.
Haunted Dolls I believe that some of the most noted haunted items would be dolls. Understanding the energy and spirit connection is not something some people take so lightly. People might just toss these unwanted dolls away for they are in fear of something they just do not understand. But before you toss that unwanted doll away, you might want to get in touch with a young lady named Kimberly Gunn. Kimberly has over thirty dolls residing in her home and not only are they beautiful or unusual, some that were given, bought or donated to her didn’t come alone. 1: Tell us a little bit about your personal life and your first experience with the paranormal. My name is Kimberly Gunn and I was born and raised in a very small town in Louisiana. I'm a wife and mother and have been able to see and hear spirits since the age of 4. My son, who is almost 21 years of age, also has been able to see and hear spirits since the age of 4. 2: What intrigues you about collecting dolls that may have some type of spirit connection? I heard about haunted dolls many years ago and wanted to see for myself if a spirit would attach to a doll. I knew they attached to homes, furniture, jewelry, and antiques but didn't know that they could attach to dolls. I purchased my first
Page 38
4: Having so many dolls in one location that have a strong spirit attachment cause any type of overlapping effect? Do you feel that in some way they all communicate with each other? If you are asking me whether they let me see into their past the answer is yes. In many cases I’ve had very detailed dreams of a particular spirit a saw what was going on at that time in their life. I’ve been woke up by voices in my room, music, drums, knocking, snoring, my name being called…just many, many things. Any yes the spirits do communicate with each other also….I’ve gotten EVP’s of several voices having a conversation so I do know they communicate with each other. 5: Is there any particular doll you are more attracted to and is there a particular doll that you tend to stay somewhat distant? I do have a strong connection to Paul. Paul is always around and looking out for me…he seems to guard my bedroom at night to keep away any negative spirits. I’ve woke up many times to see him pacing beside my bed when he felt I was in danger. I call him my right hand man. I don’t have any spirits that I tend to stay away from because if I feel the spirit isn’t a positive one I’ll never bring it into my home. I just don’t allow negative spirits into my home for any reason!!!
Voices to Visions / September 2012
6: What would you suggest that person to do with that doll which may have a spirit attachment and how often do you receive dolls that may have a spirit attachment? If they purchased a doll and found out a spirit was attached and they didn’t want it I would suggest that they find someone who did want the doll. Never destroy the doll!!! To answer the second part of the question: I only purchase dolls that I feel have a spirit attached. The spirit will attach to an object as a point of reference so they will always be able to find their way back to that particular object. The spirit is allowing you in; to view happenings in their own life or letting you know what happened to them that may have ended their life. These spirits don’t want to be forgotten nor do they want their vessel (doll) to be destroyed. You must remember they once had a body to…they lived and breathed just like we do…..just because their body has died doesn’t mean the spirit died to. A spirit is pure energy and cannot die or be extinguished….we just move on to the next chapter of our existence. And mark my words WE WILL ALL EXPERIENCE THIS ONE DAY!!! 7: If you had the opportunity to have a conversation with one of your dolls, which doll would it be and what three questions would you ask that doll. I have conversations with them every day…. (Them) being the spirit attached to the doll not the doll….yes I talk to them. I’m always asking them if their happy here, do they want to be here and do they have anything they want to tell me….. Most evenings I turn my Ovilus X with the digital display box on to see if anyone has anything urgent to say. I still have dreams about them and still experience paranormal activity daily.

them into active or passive situations and by providing possible explanations and examples of these phenomena. In active item haunting, I assert that there is an actual visual or auditory unassisted behavior by the object that is perceived and reported by an observer. Conversely, in passive item hauntings, the mere possession or close proximity to a haunted item purportedly causes unexpected changes in the life, situation and fortunes of the people involved.
By Karen Bashak
In active item hauntings it is widely believed that the object may be possessed by a deceased person, spirit or demonic entity or that it may be imbued with the residual psychic energy from some monumentally powerful event. On the other hand, while some passive item hauntings may also be linked to residual psychic energy as a cause, the majority are attributed to being “cursed items or beneficent protective amulets, religious medals, good luck charms and the like. Next I will provide some famous examples of actively haunted items for you to consider and evaluate.
History, folklore and modern popular culture are filled with stories of inanimate objects that reportedly have extraordinary powers and abilities. These items are said to be capable of unexplained behavior such as unassisted physical movements or vocalizations, translocation and perhaps the ability to provide a window or connection to unseen realities. And a second group of items seems to manifest the ability to passively affect events in the lives of people either for good or evil. Item haunting, as I call it is not a true technical term for these mysteries, but more or less my blanket description of these happenings. This article will attempt to examine so called item hauntings by dividing
Over the years there have been many accounts of haunted dolls. In the 1970’s the purchase of a large Raggedy Anne doll, later called Annabelle, as a Birthday gift created quite a stir. The young recipient and other family members often found items and Annabelle herself had mysteriously changed positions or moved from room to room. After a month of these strange occurrences a local medium was consulted to provide an explanation. The medium came to believe, while studying the history of the house, that a child named Annabelle had lived and died on the property. Following her death she did not want to move on and had asked to inhabit the Raggedy Anne doll.
Can objects be haunted?
Page 41
Voices to Visions / September 2012
The family was content with this explanation until one night when a loud disturbance was heard upstairs. Fearing a break in, a family member was dispatched to investigate the cause of the commotion and was promptly attacked by unseen hands that slashed and cut the tenant. When the room was searched afterwards there were no signs of a break in or perpetrator…..But Annabelle lay nearby in a disheveled state. Occult investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren consulted with the family and arranged for a priest to bless the house and its inhabitants. The doll was then given to the Warren’s and for 3 days sat on a chair next to Ed Warren’s desk.
the same, “Robert did it”. After Gene’s death Robert became the property of the 10 year old daughter of the house’s new owners. The events thereafter terrorized the young girl and many a passing by school mate. Robert would make grotesque faces at the children as they passed by the windows and it was reported that the doll had attempted to suffocate and otherwise harm his young mistress. And as further proof of Robert’s loathing of not being with Gene he allegedly mutilated the little girl’s female dolls as well. When the family moved out, Robert
From that day forward Annabelle was found once again to have moved from room to room and even to other buildings all on her own and the doll was noted to emit growling sounds whenever clergy members visited. It was then decided that the safest place for Annabelle was encased in a glass display cabinet in the Warren’s Occult museum, where she remains. A similar fate befell a doll called Robert, the lifelong companion of artist Gene Otto. Robert was given to Gene by his beloved Bahamian nanny, a woman who was reportedly the victim of frequent abuse by her employers, the parents of young Gene. An unsubstantiated rumor claimed that the nanny practiced Voodoo and the doll was given to mete out revenge on the family, but more credible sources report that it was just a loving gift to her charge. Until Gene Otto’s marriage, years later, the doll almost never left the young man’s side during waking hours, that is. Robert was found in all sorts of inexplicable locations when Gene was asleep or away. When Gene Otto married his new wife, was totally creeped out by Robert and packed the doll off to the attic. Throughout his entire life whenever strange occurrences took place in the Otto home, Gene’s answer was always

was donated to a local museum and almost at once the museum and its workers were plagued with strange and unwanted events. So Robert the doll was relegated to a sealed glass display case just like Annabelle. P.S. Robert does not like to be photographed or so the story and lack of pictures, goes.

Another haunted item is said to be the Mirror at the Myrtles Plantation, reputed by some to be the most haunted house in America. The Mirror originally made in France, was purchased in New Orleans in the 1970’s as a period piece appropriate to the décor of the Myrtle Plantation and best of all it came with its own history and ongoing sightings of ghostly apparitions; and some of the faces peering back through the looking glass as described, could well have been previous occupants of a plantation from the owners to their slaves or a French Aristocrat or two from a bygone era. And, one other thing not really relevant to this article, but interesting and fascinating nonetheless, was the wealth of information about mystery, and magical legends that surround mirrors and reflections over the centuries. The literature and internet is full of accounts of actively haunted items from the mundane to the sublime. From dolls and mirrors and chairs to screaming skulls….I could go on and on, but I won’t for now. Next I will present a small sampling of items I classify as passively haunted items. This discussion would be remiss if the legendary Hope Diamond were not mentioned. The Hope Diamond once adorned the forehead of an idol in India but was stolen by a Hindu priest. When his theft was discovered, he was captured and tortured thus beginning tales of its curse. Then in 1642 the gem came into the possession of a French trader who sold it for a fortune, but when his son squandered the fortune the trader attempted to recoup his loss and was torn to pieces by a pack of rabid dogs. Then the diamond became the possession of King Louis XIV who had the jewel cut down from its original 112.5 carats to a mere 67.5 carats, but the curse did not seem to be lessened by this downsizing. When a French courtier and known scalawag later borrowed the gem he was indicted for embezzlement and died in prison. French Princess de Lambelle wore the diamond regularly and when her father’s regime fell into disgrace the King died virtually a pauper and his daughter was beaten to death by a mob. Later King Louis the XVI
Page 43
and his Queen Marie Antoinette owned the stone and as we all know they met their end beneath the guillotine. In 1830 the diamond was acquired by Henry Thomas Hope (hence the Hope Diamond Name) his family fortunes declined dismally after the purchase whereupon his heir sold the diamond. Over the next 15 years the Hope Diamond was passed around to several more owners, most notably Jacque Colet who was driven to suicide; Prince Ivan Kannitovitsky of Russia who was murdered; Turkish Sultan Abdul Hamid who immediately presented it to his favorite concubine whom he stabbed to death within a year and caused the Sultan to be dethroned; and the last of the European owners was Simon Montharides who was killed along with his wife and baby when their carriage overturned while transporting the diamond. Then The Hope Diamond made its way to America when purchased by tycoon Ned McLean for only $154,000, not much of a bargain when you consider that following its acquisition McLean’s son was killed in a car crash, his daughter died of a drug overdose, his wife also became a morphine addict and Ned himself died in an insane asylum. What remained of the McLean family then sold the gem to famous jeweler, Harry Winston, who immediately deeded the Hope Diamond to The Smithsonian Institute, where it remains on display and has not inflicted its curse on the Institution. There are many more examples of passively haunted items but for the sake of brevity I will but mention some. The curse of King Tut’s tomb, of course, and on the less dangerous and deadly side, who hasn’t seen someone driving along with a Saint Christopher’s Medal for protection or last but not least a four leaf clover. Whether or not you believe that an item can be “haunted” depends largely on personal experience and your evaluation of secondhand accounts. Nonetheless it is a fascinating subject for further exploration.

My trip to Texas During my visit, we set out to seek some historical places that have some type of known paranormal activity. My nephew Austin has become interested in the Paranormal, so we promoted him to lead investigator, my other nephew, Walter not so much. I selected a couple locations that were safe for him and my sister. We ventured out to seek the unknown and possibly collect some type of paranormal evidence. This was all a learning experience for Austin and me, as well. We talked about how to record, what questions to ask, finding information about historical side of each location and what to listen and look for and so forth. The most important issue of all is that Austin was having fun, learning and understanding about spirits. Who knows, maybe someday he will have the largest paranormal network in Texas. This trip is has taught me something very important. Every time I go to a location with someone and I do this all the time, I worry about how they are doing. I worry about if they are bored, do they want to be here, do they want to be
Page 46
somewhere else or am I wasting their time. I have to stop doing that. I could stay hours and hours at these places, and I should stay hours and hours, but when I am with someone else, even my husband or with the person that is giving us the historical tour, I feel so bad and I feel like I am wasting their time. Even though we are there for a couple of hours, and within those couple of hours, we have captured a great collection of paranormal evidence, I still have that feeling. I have to be stronger and lead into this the way it should be. The only thing I need and should concentrate on is trying to do my best in researching and finding out whom, if any, spirits still reside at these locations. Get as much recordings as I can and if I do get any evps, then go on with that information as my first lead. Being with my sister has opened my eyes to this and has given me more passion to do so. And I thank her for that. These towns, whether they are ghost towns or not, are losing their life, their mark in history. Those towns, from the desolate field to the abandoned buildings from hundreds and hundreds of years ago hold more information than you can ever imagine. Stories that never been told before, stories and legends that need to be shared, need to be heard. And just maybe add more history or even correct it. Will someone save them? ~alice

As far as anything paranormal, there could be some spirits still residing in the town of Goldsmith, you could ask the locals that still reside in this town. I am sure everyone has a tale to share. ~alice
Goldsmith, Texas At a population of just 253 from the last census reported in 2000, the fainted layer of sand on the sun heated asphalt heeds a lonely existence of was once a booming town. Now surrounded by overgrowth and the civilization that now has become Goldsmith, this simple historical mark in Texas culture is seemed to be brushed off as nothing other than an old building eyesore to the lot just behind it full of trailers and debris. The boom of the Permian Basin oil development in 1936, this town was on its way to become a great economy just outside of Odessa. Within a couple of years, Goldsmith grew to a healthy population of 857; you could even get a shower bath for only .25 cents! Soon after the World War II, the oil services moved to Odessa and the population of Goldsmith declined.

down due to becoming dilapidated and full of bats on the third floor, where the courthouse now is grounded. All that remains of the 1908 Courthouse is a gazebo formed from the twelve entrance columns. I really cannot understand how things like that could happen, however that could have very well been due to lack of funding and/or just total lack of interest of the historical side of the building. As we walk into the cell holding area, the Chief Deputy did point out that with such a limited space, there was actual real evidence in the one of the cells from a recent crime scene. They had the object hanging up so the blood could dry. Not a good thought came into my head. Kinda creepy and all this talk about haunted objects, a wondering thought did cross my mind, “could that evidence have a spiritual attachment?” The Old Jail Stanton Texas Arriving at this historical marker for Stanton Texas, a memory of how life had been for a Sherriff and his family back in the late 1800’s, today would have been unheard of. Those times the family actually lived in the same building as the inmates. Some had minor crimes and some were jailed for more severe crimes. We were accompanied by The Chief Deputy and a new officer with just a two months of duty under his belt, to let us in and give us a tour. The original courthouse was torn
Page 50
The cells were actually placed down first and the building was built around it. As we walked upstairs to the where the family would have actually lived, the entrance to the family quarters had a double steel door. Seemed like a quaint little area to live, even though right below you were people that have committed crimes. Austin we recording while Tara was video-taping our tour. We did catch a couple of evps that I am unsure of. You can listen to them here: http://dustandshadows.net ~alice

Soon after 1884 the town flourished, but as fast as it bloomed, the Texas harsh natural environment took them just to about abandonment. In 1890, after the loss of so many Catholic families, the town produced more within the Protestant religion and with this they changed the town’s name to Stanton.
The Convent Stanton, Texas Just atop a vacant hill lies one of the most historical markers in Stanton history. The outside bare sand filled with scattered patches of brown grass leaves your mind with wonder of what this place used to be. The windows boarded by billowing wood desperately try to hide the secrets that secluded all the transitions of this building. Picture yourself in the 1882; picture yourself as a Catholic, no less a German Catholic Friar in 1882. A group of friars took it upon themselves to start a new colony away from Kansas. They traveled to the West part of Texas, with no permission from their superiors, let alone from the state of Texas, to start a German Catholic settlement. They took it upon themselves to change the towns’ name to Marienfeld, and it seemed that the Bishop of San Antonio was pleased by the choices these handful of friars took.
Page 52
Most of the German Catholic colony declined and was forced to sell nearly all its assets. Fortunately, the Sisters of Mercy, who were involved with the Carmelites operating a day and boarding school for their parish, bought the monastery and some land from the Carmelites for only $1.00. For forty-four years this building lived and flourished until one day in 1938 a tornado destroyed the building. Obviously we couldn’t go in there, even the Deputy Sheriff said no, I was sadden as well as my sister to not have been able to walk the halls of this dormitory. The law is the law and respect to the law makes life easier, however, not for what some people claim walks the halls of this two story late 1800 building. It is said that at night, people can hear the weeping of nuns. ~alice

We started our self-tour of the Fort in mid-afternoon, as the heat stricken dried grass crinkled with each step we took, the essence of this place with no prior knowledge left us in wonderment of what still is standing of these historical buildings. The chimneys still erected there are visible formations of underground brick bunkers to the brick outline forming what was once their living quarters. The only surviving building was the Magazine, yes, still surviving after hundreds of years, even through the harsh Texas weather.
Fort Phantom Hill Abilene Texas The road is called West Fort Phantom Hill, the year was 1849, and the Federal Government sentencing upon the orders of General Smith, Lieutenant Colonel John J. Abercrombie arrived at the Clear Fork of the Brazos River with five companies of the Fifth Infantry on November 14, 1851. This fort was to be set up to be safe-way for travelers to California. Upon arriving at this location, the lack of adequate water and building timber just made living on this property much more difficult for them, even if some logs were brought in by ox wagon some 40 miles away. They did the best they could to do to survive. The fort was occupied for only five years before its final abandonment by Lieutenant Newton C. Givens in 1854.
Page 54
There was no known battle scene that took place during that time while the fort was being occupied. However, there were of course the lack sufficient food and water, even though there was a lake only two miles south of them, they did have their medical issues, and the only would be known enemy would be that of the territory Indians, the Comanche. And to pick a fight with them, that would be a grave mistake. However, the Indians did make peaceful visits to the Fort, as did others tribes. It makes you wonder what stories were told.
Voices to Visions / September 2012
Most of the recordings we did pick up were towards the front of the property, where the Company Quarters are located. Surprisingly we did not pick up anything in the area of the hospital or the surgeons area. You can listen to the evps here: http://dustandshadows.net/ If you have permission to do an investigation during the night, which I would totally advise against doing so, one reason is the rattlesnakes and other animals that would roam through that field at night, and I do not think it would be safe. However, using what we have captured from our visit, key notes would be these: * You are not from around here are you? * Mexican * Indian words/chant There might be something going on around that well. You don’t have to do your investigation at night, obviously from what we captured proves so. But these would be some great lead off to your questions.
Austin’s Investigation The spirits that you might think would be those from the Indian descent, however reviewing Austin’s digital recordings we did pick up some evps. There were only us three walking on the property. This is the first time I have ever experienced a frequency noise coming from the digital recorder. I have no idea why the recorder picked that up, not once but quite a few times. Even stranger is that nothing happened to the video camera, it was just on the digital recorder.
Page 55
If you capture any evps, I would love to hear them. I have also noticed that there so many grasshoppers, everywhere, that should be taken in consideration when doing any type of photography, videotaping and digital recordings, especially at night. ~alice

West Texas Spirit Paranormal Society * Share with us about you and what sparked the interest in the paranormal for you to form your own group. I have had many childhood experiences growing up; we lived in many old houses and currently live in one. Growing up, I have been pushed, scratched, kicked, stuff has been flown at me, stuff has flew off shelves, and I have personally see two apparitions back in 2001. Due to my experiences I started looking around my town, doing my own investigations at local spots, as I was doing this I noticed one day that there were a lot of people around my area that needed a paranormal group’s help, but they were afraid to confided in the groups because they were afraid of groups not believing them. I started posting that no matter what the issue was, our team would believe them, and would not make them feel uncomfortable about any reports they made. My wife Lacey and I decided to start a local group for Snyder on 7/2/2008. After about a year, there were many calls for outside areas, and since then we have started to provide our services to Texas, New Mexico, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. Since I recently visited Texas, I would like talk about Fort Phantom Hill. * How did you find out about Fort Phantom Hill and what intrigued you to seek out this location for conducting a paranormal investigation? I found out about Fort Phantom Hill from one of our members, Brayden Culwell with his dad Beau (currently a member). They lived in Abilene. Brayden was telling us to investigate that area. After searching online for some facts about the Fort, my wife Lacey called the Fort Phantom Foundation in Abilene, Texas and asked several people there
Page 58
about sharing their experiences. We talked to the caretaker, and he mentioned to us, that he has seen and heard numerous things throughout the years. That made us decide right there and then, that we wanted to investigate this location. * Share with our readers about your personal experiences and how you conducted your investigation within this open spaced area. My personal experiences are listed below. 1: I heard a disembodied voice as we were setting up the equipment that stated "cannon". I looked toward the cannon and saw what appeared to be 2-3 people standing around the cannon, but I did not have any equipment ready at this time, as we were conducting our walkthrough. 2: My wife experienced pain in her legs, and felt like her legs were missing. She could not walk, could not stand up for about 5-6 minutes, after a while, the sensations had dissipated and everything felt normal. 3. I have seen and chased shadows throughout the night, which appeared to dart from building to building. 4: I have heard several chants in the valley, which were not recorded because of the distance, but all my members did hear these chants. How we conducted the investigation is as follows: We used digital evp recorders while the wind was not blowing (not that long in West Texas, lol); we also used a spirit box at times. We set up base at the front gate of the Fort, and we went in with two teams of three, covering as much area as possible. It was hard to hear sometimes when trucks would go by on the road just outside the Fort, but we made a note of each occurrence throughout the night. We would stop and regroup and switch teams during our investigation. We were having most of our experiences in the old hospital area of Fort Phantom.
Voices to Visions / September 2012
* After your conclusion on this location, what is your and your teams overall impression of Fort Phantom Hill? Fort Phantom Hill has several unexplained happenings; we all had personal experiences throughout the night. We recommend that any paranormal group investigate this location, as the group is bound to catch something or have a personal experience. My team enjoyed the investigation, and Fort Phantom Hill is a fun place to just go and see the site. We still have experiences there when we go in the day.
* With some of my own evps captured during our visit at Fort Phantom Hill, would you and your team consider revisiting this location and lead off with questions pertaining to what we captured on our digital recorders and share with us your findings? Most definitely, we were all ready. We are planning to do another re-investigation later next month. Just send us

location of your evps and what you caught, and we will start with those questions. And yes we will share any responses that we get. Donny, Thank you for your time, and we will be looking forward to reviewing your next investigation at Fort Phantom Hill. http://wtspsonline.net/Index.htm
