GREETINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT To Our Distinguished Honorees, Alumni, Family and Friends: I bring you greetings on behalf of the Shaw University administration, faculty, staff and students. It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2011 Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet.

Dorothy Cowser Yancy PhD

Congratulations to our distinguished honorees of the evening. The accomplishments of our inductees epitomize excellence and bring much pride and honor to their Alma Mater, dear ole Shaw U. Needless to say, this Institution’s reputation of preparing men and women to become productive citizens has truly been enhanced by the standards set by them. Let’s strengthen our partnership as we continue to work together to move Shaw University to even greater heights as we celebrate 146 years of educational excellence. My sincere thanks to the Athletic Hall of Fame Committee for their support, hard work and diligence in making this event an enjoyable and memorable part of our Homecoming/Founder’s Day festivities. Blessings and best wishes. Sincerely, Dorothy Cowser Yancy, Ph.D. President

GREETINGS FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Attorney Willie E. Gary

I greet you twice; first, as Chairman of the Board of Trustees; and secondly, as a fellow member of the Hall of Fame. In both roles I am extremely proud of the legacy of excellence which has marked Shaw's image as an institution. So much has been accomplished here in the past; the time has come for all of us who revere Shaw's name to thing about moving to a higher standard of excellence. To do so we need your help in terms of financial support and public relations activities if we are to meet the challenges of excellence that the 21st century is presenting.

GREETINGS FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME COMMITTEE Fellow Hall of Fame Members, Alumni & Friends, I am delighted to welcome you to the 2011 Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. We have come to pay tribute to four former athletes of Shaw University. Each of these candidates for induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame is well deserved. I have observed their triumphant performances as athletes and students. It is gratifying to see them being rewarded for their superlative athletic talents and the significant contributions they have made to the well being of others and their Alma Mater during their undergraduate days and after. Neither of them has let grass grow under their feet since leaving these sacred grounds. To you inductees, we hope that your membership in the Athletic Hall of Fame will enhance your support for Alma Mater, and may your contributions help to make this great institution more responsive to the people and programs it supports. On behalf of the Athletic Hall of Fame Committee, we extend our appreciation to all of you for your presence to witness and celebrate this occassion. Thank you for your support.

ALMA MATER HAIL! Dr. William M. Spann Chairman of the Athletic Hall of Fame Committee Page 4

On the gridiron, James H. Bloomfield was known as "The Bloom," a true Shaw Bear, very ferocious and highly competitive. He was dynamite as a defensive back, fearless and inspired his teammates to be the same. His exceptional speed and agility empowered him with the ability to be an outstanding athlete. He played like a "winner" on every down of the game; yes, he was predacious and brutish, they called him "the headhunter," but a very mild mannered student on campus, he never played "dirty". He served in several leadership positions in fraternal and student organizations; the late president of Shaw, Dr. James E. Cheek entrusted the "Bloom" as his personal chauffeur, as such, he was able to meet several influential people who inspired him in his professional career. After graduation, "The Bloom" became an active supporter of his Alma Mater. In his hometown of High Point, NC, he was very community oriented and actively involved in the community; his military career during the Vietnam conflict was equally eventful; as a marine he won the distinguished Navy citation and Purple Heart award for bravery. His family views him as a loving husband , father and grandfather who made life wonderful for them as chief provider. James H. Bloomfield , YES! A true Shaw Bear who deserves the honor of being inducted into the Shaw University Athletic Hall of Fame.

James H. Bloomfield '68 2011 Shaw University Athletic Hall of Fame Inductee "If your life were an open book, the pages would be tinged with gold, and we would read a story there to be remembered and retold, for we would read of how you gave to each and every one you met the fullness that your heart could give, and the love that no one can forget." -Anonymous

Roderick, a native of Ridgeway, South Carolina came to Shaw University with a deprived economic, social educational background. His emergence to success in these areas were due to opportunities afforded him through his outstanding athletic ability which he excelled in during his high school career and at Shaw. In 1982, he was honored as being the Most Outstanding athlete in baseball and golf. In 1983, he received the MVP award in baseball and helped Shaw clinch the CIAA championship title. Also in 1983, he was the 100 meter medalist of the CIAA championship invitational track meet. Roderick is a hard working individual who believes "all things are possible" if you keep the faith. As a citizen, his community work has elevated him to great success as a business man, a sports official, an active volunteer worker, a dedicated lifelong church supporter and an alumnus of Shaw, who has given much to his Alma Mater since graduation. Roderick's teammates and friends highly endorse him as a worthy recipient of this award and to be inducted into the Shaw University Athletic Hall of Fame.

Dwight, upon graduating from high school had several larger perhaps more prestigious colleges and universities to choose from. Nevertheless, Dr. J.E. Lytle was able to bring Dwight to Shaw, primarily to share his outstanding baseball skills in the CIAA baseball circle. For three years he dazzled the conference as a 3rd baseman, shortstop and outfield player. He was noted as a strong arm batter; being an exceptional hitter, he finished the 1967 season with a .477 batting average, he was among the leaders on this great team with the most home runs, runs batted in and runs scored; Dwight was high in the ranks among such outstanding players as Bill Jones, Randy Bazemore, Bobby Sanders, Joe Bell and the late Dr. Fred Long Jr. Dwight was also recognized as a good student who achieved many laurels in the student government association and community leadership. He received the honorary degree award of "Who's Who" among colleges and universities. He has accomplished high honors and accolades during his professional career as a IBM sales manager, industry expert and project manager to name a few. He is a member of Groove Phi Groove Social Fraternity, a sports official, school board liaison member, town council member and an ardent elder in the Presbyterian church. Dwight is and has been an ardent supporter of his Alma Mater since graduation both financially and through inkind-service. The Shaw University Athletic Hall of Fame Committee welcomes Dwight R. Winn, Sr. to this group of outstanding and distinguished athletes.

Lionel Jackson, a native of Decatur Georgia, came to Shaw University to make a change in his life. He learned the knowledge, skill and positive attitude to transfer these traits to others. Being an outstanding athlete for four years as a "Blue Chip" scholarship football player, enabled him to achieve his dream. He was a leading CIAA performer, labeled "The Crusher". He had the honor of being named CIAA "Rookie of the Year" 1973-74. Lionel became gainfully employed as a civil worker in his hometown after graduation; his work ethics enabled him to achieve several community recognitions and awards. He retired as an outstanding fireman in Hollywood, Florida. He worked diligently as a member of the city housing board to improve the lives and living conditions of many citizens. Lionel is a member of Nu Gamma Alpha Fraternity. A great supporter of Koinonia Worship Church, a proud parent of four children and eleven grands; a member of the Shaw Bear Booster Club and a member of the Greater Atlanta, Georgia Shaw Alumni Association. He now achieves his father's honor who was inducted into the A&T University Athletic Baseball Hall of Fame, 1952. Welcome to Shaw University Athletic Hall of Fame, an outstanding running back and defensive player.
