editorial Summer 2012
There are many different things that drive us to spend time in the mountains. Like our motivation, the range of mountain sports is almost limitless. Our aim with this workbook is to bring you a little closer to the ortoVoX summer world. Our philosophy is mirrored in ourselves and our team of sportspeople. Whatever the season, the ortoVoX Athletes embody mountain sports. In winter, they live for freeski mountaineering; in the summer months, they take on the physical and mental demands of: climbing, mountaineering, mountain running and skyVe touring.
athletes Jogy Schindler, Marina Happach, Chris Ebenbichler Photo Klaus Fengler location Großglockner, 3798 m
In cooperation with our athletes, ortoVoX has designed new products and improved existing ones especially for them. We’ve found that both the products and the demands of the mountain generate strong emotions. Whether it is the exposure of the Fleischbank east wall, the thin air on the Großglockner, the racing heartbeats after climbing the Hirschberg or the pumping adrenaline after the first skyver ride down the Herzogstand, every day has generated unforgettable statements; quotes that many every mountain athlete can relate to and that say so much more than long stories. These are the highly personal perceptions that make mountain sports unique! Your ortoVoX team

ortoVoX helps to restore former fallow land and overgrazed pastures to their natural state. By planting new trees, we make a small contribution to a future where everybody should still be able to fully enjoy nature.

"the faster your Pulse, the further aWay eVerything else"
sePPi rottmoser Ski mountaineer
mountain running is a sport for real men (and women)! sePPi rottmoser represents the race against the clock. Our athlete from Rosenheim loves to run on the surrounding peaks with lightweight skis in the winter. His mind is always on his personal best, one eye is on his watch, and his competitors are usually behind him. If there is no snow, then he still heads out to enjoy himself. The pulse constantly at 200 bpm, he will take no break. the aim is to run through the Pain – Without any comPetitors

On the GROSSGLOCkNER, however, in Austria they found some, although without their skis. The three are bound by more than just a rope. Together, they have skied down major steep

faces, always looking for new lines, and interesting and unusual summit climbs. In June 2011, the GroĂ&#x;glockner demanded they use their full skills as Alpinists. A ridge with areas of high winds, climbing in easy mixed terrain, thin air, and a great deal of endurance were all part of the experience. AN OPTIMUM TRAINING TOUR FOR THE UPCOMING WINTER

lenzing Modal
Supersoft stands for a combination of the finest Merino wool and lenzing Modal. Modal is used on the inside and is as soft as silk. Modal is a pure, natural fiber manufactured from beech wood cellulose. The fiber comes solely from wood from sustainably managed beech forests. Lenzing is the perfect companion to the functionality of Merino fiber – a scratch-free material meets the popular Merino properties. Ideally suited for highly sensitive skin! Material Merino supersoft 53 % Virgin wool (Merino) + 43 % Lenzing Modal+ 4 % Polyamide
toray
For our hardshell collection, we exclusively use the derMizax ev membrane from toray. Compared to standard membranes, the Toray membrane is intelligent. It works best when warm. It does not consist of micro-pores but of a compact structure. advantage it is extremely breathable (20.000 g/m²/24h), windproof and coMpletely waterproof (26.000 mm H2O). Maximum diffusion to the outside is guaranteed even with minimal care. Dermizax EV is best suited for intensly active sports – the membrane has a 200% stretch capacity with no risk of separation. We use an inner lining of lightweight Merino mesh to maximize the clothing’s ability to manage body temperature. Material hardshell 83 % Polyester + 17 % Virgin wool (Merino)
schoeller naturetec
We have eliminated any membrane in our schoeller® Softshell products. The fine Merino fibers are directly woven together with the softshell material. advantage: The material is extremely breathable while still offering protection against the wind, light precipitation and dirt. The material’s surface has a microstructure which permanently sheds water and dirt. The symbiosis between Merino wool and Schoeller softshell is extreMely robust and stretchy – making it ideal for intensively active sports. Merino wool against the skin provides pleasant wear comfort and ideal body temperature management whatever the weather or temperature. Material softshell naturetec 74 % Polyamide + 20 % Virgin wool (Merino) + 6 % Elasthane
hypalon
We use hypalon for sharp-edge protection on the inside of our hard and softshell pants. The material is 100% cut-resistant and protects the material beneath it.
Merino fleece (Mi)
Represents the ultimate in functionality. We combine the finest Merino wool with the polyester & elastane shell. We deliberately avoid using a membrane so as not to lay any obstacles in the way of breathability. The material is extreMely stretchy and robust and impresses through its sensational body temperature control due to the brushed Merino wool on the inner side. Material 69 % Polyester + 27 % Virgin wool (Merino) + 4 % Elasthane

Merino softshell (McM)
Our new softshell collection offers protection and the popular Merino climate control. We adhere different Merino mesh thicknesses (100/150 g) directly to the nylon shell. The result is a wind and water-resistant product that functions without a membrane and is therefore extremely breathable. Through the body-area-specific distribution of different material thicknesses (McM = Merino coMfort Mapping), we offer the different areas of the body precisely the temperature range they need. inner 100 % Virgin wool (Merino) outer 96 % Nylon + 4 % Elasthane
(Mwp)
(Ma)
Mwp stands for Merino windprotection. The front of the jacket offers both frontal wind protection and maximum breathability. At the front, the polyester shell is bonded onto the merino mesh beneath it. This combination is extreMely breathable while also offering superior wind protection. The jacket’s collar is made from our proven Merino 185 - a pure Merino product that is well known for its outstanding wear comfort and temperature regulation. The back is made from 100% needle punched polyester. The many little perforations provide optimum moisture exchange during intense physical activity.
Merino athletic is our new, ultra-sporty range. For the outer, we use a lightweight, elastic compound of nylon and elastane. Merino wool is then woven directly into this thin layer. Merino wool is well known for its humidity- and temperature-regulating properties and odor-neutral nature. Intelligent seam positioning and the compressive properties offered by Merino Athletic support the muscle groups, help aid recovery and thus lead to greater perforMance.
outer 100 % Polyester
Material 42,9 % Nylon + 38,5 % Elasthane + 18,6 % Virgin wool (Merino)
Merino coMpetition
Our most sporty line is nearly seamless, using a circular knitting process. This process enables us to position different material thicknesses on different body areas. The base consists of 190 g Merino, a thin Merino mesh is applied to areas of heavy perspiration, 240 g Merino is used for particularly cold-sensitive areas and an elastic ribbed structure is used in areas that require great freedom of movement. Material 80 % Virgin wool (Merino) + 17 % Polyamide + 3 % Elasthane
inner 66,8 % Virgin wool (Merino) + 33,2 % Polyester collar inner 100 % Virgin wool (Merino 185)

"the fun starts where the last tire tread ends!"
daniel klocker Freeski-Mountaineer
ski touring in the suMMer! In the winter, the mission is as clear as daylight: fight hard for a wild ride through a steep face with such a slope that even snow can barely stick to it. The physical and mental demands placed on the athletes are equally as severe, and stringent training is a basic requirement for optimum safety. But what can we do in the summer? Chris and Daniel are part of the ortovox freeski mountaineering team. When they asked this question, we gave them the answer from the Herzogstand. They were thrilled at the carrying comfort and descent performance of the new Mountainskyver.

Even from the Griesner Alm car park, the Fleischbank is impressive for its steep, rocky walls. However, the freeski mountaineering athlete Chrissy was even more impressed by the belay rope-length of the Vertical Tango. After several classic sevens with wide-spread fissures and demanding intersections, the last two rope lengths overhang by several meters. 300 m of air beneath our feet means excellent forearm training and perfect mental preparation for new steep-face ski projects in the coming winter.

LEGs Of sTEEL Even after his third ascent, power athlete Seppi had not had enough. As soon as the photo shoot was over, he went… you’ve got it! For a quick run
safETY fIRsT Understandably, Klaus our photographer did not want to remove his helmet for this setting
"aGaIn PLEasE" kLaUs fEnGLER Photographer
WORk CLOTHEs In what gear does Seppi feel the most comfortable?
On TOP Of aUsTRIa Our Art Director Volker is usually always the one behind the photographer. For a summit shot however, he got in front of the camera for once HOT HOLGER Our cameraman sweated through two t-shirts – that’s simply what happens if you don’t wear breathable Merino. Thank you for the moving images – a COmPETITIOn is on its way to you
THank YOU PETRUs Despite a poor weather forecast and incessant rain the previous day, we risked the tour – and were rewarded with (mainly) clear blue skies

ORTOVOX Behind-the-scenes
GIRL POWER Steffi from ORTOVOX Marketing carried two Mountainskyvers at once up the Herzogstand! One for her and one for the photographer
sPIDERman Klaus gives (almost) everything for a ‘money shot’ – ‘exposure’ isn’t part of his vocabulary. Thank you for your great commitment
TEamWORk Always look on the bright side of life EnD Of PRODUCTIOn The ascent up the Glockner is usually about 1900 meters. Thanks to our photographer’s instructions, however, our climb was somewhat further. We were all exhausted but satisfied as we completed our descent in one piece
PHOTOs Hendrik Reschke, Klaus Fengler, Steffi Rieder, Volker Heuer
TOPOGRaPHY Where does this go? Athletes Chrissy and Hendrik from ORTOVOX Marketing successfully found their way to and through the Fleischbank
POInT Of VIEW The notorious Glocknerscharte was a motif that we had to capture
