ÅF designed the Vinstra-Sjoa section of the E6 motorway and ÅF’s architects at tegn_3 were in charge of landscaping and architecture. The mission was to make the E6 a safer motorway. The selected road design - a dual carriageway with a median barrier - means that 9 out of 10 serious accidents are now avoided. In addition, the journey time through the Gudbrandsdalen valley has been shortened by twelve minutes. As per requirements, all engineering aspects were fully modelled in 3D. The architects contributed greatly in terms of bridge design, particularly to the Lågen bridge at Kvam, while the main challenge for the landscape architects was to create good terrain adaptations for such a large road in a landscape prone to flooding. The E6 Frya-Sjoa motorway section was named Norway’s “Infrastructure project of the year” in 2016. The jury started that “The new E6 steals through the landscape as if it has always been there. This is 33 kilometres of road, tunnels and bridges that demonstrates outstanding engineering and architecture of our time.”

Reshaping transportation. 10

The Intelligent Transport Systems used by the Danish Road Directorate on motorways, on bridges and in tunnels has been developed by Ă…F. The system is an advanced application that enables various users to stay better informed and make safer, more coordinated, and ‘smarter’ use of transport networks. The traffic management system collects data from various sensors. The detectors can be coils in the road, radar detectors, wind or road sensors, cameras, or other sensors. The data from the detectors is processed in the system, which makes it possible to provide information about the current traffic flow or conditions on the road. ITS is reshaping the way we think about transportation. The system is improving the safety, mobility and capacity of our existing infrastructure.

Luminous landmark.

Just as cities need green areas to safeguard biodiversity and the ecosystem, well planned lighting design and architecture are of the utmost importance when it comes to creating environments with strong identities, clear aesthetics, a pleasing ambience and a high comfort level. Well designed plazas, squares, bridges, parks, buildings and streets enrich people’s lives and create a sense of pride in the local area. Architecture and lighting design are high priorities for

12

us. In line with this, Ă…F is growing within architecture. sandellsandberg, Tegn_3, Koncept and Gottlieb Paludan Architects has recently joined Ă…F. They reinforce and complement our existing operations in industrial design, lighting design and landscape architecture. They enable us to develop a highly competitive customer offering, ranging from individual residential areas to entire urban areas with housing, commercial properties, offices, hotels and restaurants.

On the Sölvesborg Bridge, Europe’s longest pedestrian and bicycle bridge, tourists and local residents gather to enjoy the natural environment, the view and the spectacular lighting. When it was inaugurated in 2013, the residents of Swedish Sölvesborg were given a landmark to feel proud of. The 760-metre bridge has attracted special attention for its remarkable lighting design and is ranked as one of the ten most interesting bridges in the world. The area is particularly rich in birdlife and the lighting is inspired by the birds’ flight patterns, adapted according to the season, and changes in character over the course of the year and day. To further focus on the nature experience, the surrounding landscape has also been accentuated with lighting along the length of the bridge. A subtle light facing the water creates glittering reflections. The Sölvesborg Bridge links together the formerly inaccessible Kaninholmen and the Listerlandet peninsula with the city centre, creating the conditions for commuting to and from work. A soft light on the walkway provides good visibility for pedestrians and cyclists, and the arches create a protective space. The bridge has become a well-known landmark, and the attention is estimated to about 20 million SEK in advertising value for the town of Sölvesborg.

Self-driving cars in Gothenburg.

14

ÅF is taking part in the world’s first large-scale pilot project in which 100 self-driving Volvo cars will be used on public roads in Gothenburg, Sweden. The test with driverless cars, Drive Me, is being planned together with Volvo, the Swedish Transport Administration and the City of Gothenburg. ÅF has been entrusted with creating a basic model for traffic simulation that shows how autonomous drive vehicles affect the traffic situation. The aim is to develop a highly reliable forecast for the future from a traffic planning perspective. The system includes the current traffic situation, flows speeds and other behavioural parameters. The assignment is complex, since self-driving vehicles will be mixed with people and normal cars. The goal is for the self-driving cars to be able to handle all conceivable traffic scenarios on their own. Autonomous vehicles are an important solution for achieving the zero vision of zero people killed or seriously injured in traffic. ÅF’s assignment is being carried out in a unique collaboration with cutting- edge expertise in automotive engineering, traffic planning and traffic simulation.

Aula Medica, a monument for Stockholm. 20

Aula Medica, at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, sails out like a ship over Solnavägen. The spectacular structure was named “Building of the Year 2014”, partly thanks to its bold design in glass and its atmosphere of innovation, creativity and openness. Aula Medica’s auditorium, which seats 1,000, is used for Nobel lectures, scientific symposia, major events and conference activities. The design itself was the main challenge for ÅF, which worked with HVAC, and sanitation planning and energy calculations. The building, with an area of 13,700 sq. m. spread out across seven floors, has a unique shape and a slanted façade covered with triangular glass panes. The pattern of transparent

The East Link The East Link will be the new generation railway line that links together the countryside with Stockholm and makes Nyköping part of the capital city’s labour and housing market. The high-speed railway now under construction will contribute to an urban development not seen since the beginning of the 1900s. The trains will be able to run at a speed of over 300 km per hour and carry passengers from Stockholm to Linköping in one hour. ÅF has teamed up with Tyréns in development of the East Link’s first phase between Södertälje and Trosa, which includes production of railway plans with environmental impact assessments, basic design and design programmes. The work currently being carried out by ÅF will set the standard for the entire East Link. This is the first time Sweden has built a high-speed railway and foreign expertise from France and Japan has been brought into the project to provide know-how in new technology, but the plans need to be adapted to the Swedish natural environment and Swedish conditions. There are difficult geological challenges to overcome, since the railway will cross agricultural land as well as densely populated areas. The East Link will be built along the population centres and will stimulate regional development. The East Link will be fully operational by 2033-2035.

Waste-toenergy plant in China. 32

ÅF’s architectural firm in Denmark, Gottlieb Paludan Architects, won the international competition to design the world’s largest waste-to-energy plant in collaboration with SHL Architects. The design organizes the entire plant layout, including auxiliary buildings, into one circular building - breaking with the traditional rectangular layout of technical facilities. The simple circular form minimizes the footprint of the plant, which is situated in a scenic mountainous landscape outside the city. The 66,000 m² roof is designed to be covered by up to 44,000 m² of solar panels, providing the opportunity for the plant to produce even more energy for the city. The new Shenzhen East Waste-to-Energy Plant will incinerate 5,000 tonnes of waste per day, corresponding to one third of the waste generated by Shenzhen’s 20 million inhabitants. The plant will utilize the most advanced technology in waste incineration and power generation and, at the same time, act as a source of education for the citizens of Shenzhen. The plant is intended to showcase waste-to-energy production as an important technical process that deals with the issues of growing amounts of waste as well as the issue of finding more environmentally friendly ways of generating power. The facility is scheduled to be ready for operation from 2020.

Positive energy. London is growing faster than ever and the need for housing is a constant. Greenwich Peninsula is the name of the latest and largest urban development project in the city. One of the first structures to break ground at Greenwich Peninsula is the new Greenwich Low Carbon Energy Centre which will provide power and heating to the new district. Knowing the public’s negative preconceptions of what a power plant entails, developer Knight Dragon decided to involve ÅF’s lighting designers at Light Bureau alongside CF Møller architects and British sculptor Conrad Shawcross to design the power plant. Inspired by the dazzle camouflage of the first world war, Conrad Shawcross and Light Bureau developed a sculptural structure, with an integrated lighting design, that surrounds the 40 meter tall chimneys of the power plant. Layers of perforated steel at varying inclinations conceal the chimney whilst the interplay of natural and artificial light on and within the structure creates ever changing compositions of transparency and solidity. Through design the team has created a power plant that is quickly becoming a positive landmark frequently featured on social media amongst residents, Londoners and tourists visiting the area. 40

Brilliant efforts in Greater Copenhagen. Ongoing extensive replacement of street lighting in Frederiksberg has resulted in 19,000 new LED luminaires that will throw energy-efficient lighting across the city. The new luminaires will reduce the total power consumption by 56 per cent, which will contributes significantly to the local climate goal of becoming CO2 neutral by 2025. As an added bonus, the new lighting is helping to improve road safety and provide the city’s citizens with safer streets. ÅF has acted as technical advisor, assisting the municipality in its search for suitable subcontractors, and ensured that the collaboration leading up to the municipality’s expectations, lead-ing to a climate neutral city. In fact, the need for energy savings achieved through the implementation of LED in municipal street lighting has started a wave of public tendering and related services among Denmark’s 98 municipalities. In the past year, 22 of them asked for ÅF’s expertise.

Unique combination of safety and visual experiences. Research shows that variation and visual stimuli increase alertness and concentration levels in drivers. The Norwegian Public Roads Administration therefore aims to increase driving safety by including “eventfulness” along Norwegian roads. ÅF Lighting has carried out several unique projects along the E6 motorway. By illuminating unexpected scenographic elements on both sides of the motorway from Oslo’s main airport Gardermoen to the municipality of Biri, ÅF Lighting has contributed to increased traffic safety on a previously monotonous stretch of road. In the service areas, the architectural firm of Lovseth & Partners has designed red

public toilets that are illuminated together with parts of the surrounding environment. The red facilities shine like beacons by the motorway and create aesthetically pleasing bright points in an otherwise dark landscape.

Visual comfort in a new classic. In a socially sustainable urban environment, people should be able to move freely during all hours of the day, and it should be both attractive and safe to do so. A relatively new way of working with security and safety in cities is to improve the outdoor lighting. Outdoor lighting must meet a number of demands on safety, visual comfort, light distribution and energy savings. For that reason, Ă…F Lighting has worked in close collaboration with Tuxen design to develop a new type of LED street lighting fixture on behalf of Fagerhult. The aim was to develop an energy-efficient

42

fixture that combined visual comfort with a timeless Nordic design. In Vialume 1 the light is distributed through large lenses that are closely grouped to form a single luminous cluster, which reduces glare and creates visual comfort. The light cluster also illuminates the inside of the light opening so that it is visible at a distance. Vialume 1 is available with lighting control that reduces energy consumption by up to 40 per cent. The fixture is a natural choice for pedestrian and bicycle paths, residential areas and smaller city streets.

Nordic light in Mall of Scandinavia. When Scandinavia’s largest shopping centre Mall of Scandinavia – opened its doors for the first time, tens of thousands of shoppers enjoyed a world-class retail experience where lighting design had been given centre stage. This was the culmination of a five-year close cooperation between ÅF Lighting and Wingårdh Architects. ÅF Lighting has designed the lighting for all public spaces throughout the building, from the functional lighting for the underground parking spaces to the extravagant light features in entrances, piazzas and along walkways. A spectacular 3D pixel ceiling, consisting of 3200 suspended two metre luminous poles, covers an eighty by eight meter atrium in the Dining Experience area. The changeable installation adds colour and movement,

in order to stimulate the senses and entice shoppers to linger and return. The lighting concept for Mall of Scandinavia is inspired by the natural qualities of Nordic light and by the Scandinavian design tradition. The lighting design reflects natural daylight changes. Noisefree mining. 44

LKAB began mining iron ore in Kiruna in Sweden, as early as 1890 and underground mining started in 1957. The mine has created jobs for an entire community and is still doing so, more than 100 years after the first deposit was discovered. LKAB recently invested in a new haulage level 1,365 metres underground. ÅF was entrusted with engineering design of the facility, which must meet rigorous requirements to produce 35 million tonnes of iron ore per year and comply with stringent environmental criteria. There are increasingly high demands on keeping the noise from mining operations as low as possible. ÅF’s acoustics have played a key role in this undertaking by being able to report objective results, calculations and technical solutions, thereby making possible to develop mining operations in a way that weighs the financial aspects against the total benefit to the local residents. And, of course, to ensure that the noise levels adhere to the requirements of the authorities.

Quieter paper mill.

World-class sound.

The market for noise and vibration services is expanding rapidly worldwide. Industries need to be as sustainable as possible, and this calls for action. Ă…F has been tasked with minimizing noise levels at paper and pulp mills in Chile on behalf of pulp producers CMPC and Arauco. The projects are driven by the new, stricter external noise regulations and the major financial advantages of lower noise levels. These measures will also improve the working conditions in the mills from both a safety and working environment perspective.

For the first time in 150 years, Nationalmuseum in Stockholm is undergoing total refurbishment to bring the building up to modern standards in areas like safety, climate control and working environment. One critical key factor in the renovation work has been to ensure that the technical systems in the building are neither visible nor audible, so that the courtyards can be used for activities like lectures. While the museum is closed for renovation, Ă…F is measuring sound levels performing spatial acoustic calculations and auralization, a method used to simulate the acoustic behaviour of the building when the renovation is completed. In 2017, museum activities has moved back into a modernized building, better suited for the art and its audience, with a world class sound environment.

Better quality of life with Tobii. Being able to talk is something most of us take for granted, but for some it is a challenge. For that reason, assistive technology has been developed to aid communication, such as computers that convert text and symbols into speech, so-called speech generating devices. However, many leave something to be desired in terms of sound quality, functionality and accessibility. Until now. Swedish Tobii has developed the Tobii I-Series, a new series of speech generating devices that can be controlled through eye tracking. In working with

the new series, Ă…F has played an important role and devoted a great deal of attention to refining the sound down to the smallest detail. The results? Tobii I-12 and Tobii I-15, a new generation of attractively designed assistive devices that enhance communication and make life easier for many users.

Safe & secured. Over the course of many years, the Preem petrol stations in Sweden have been developed and modified. Preem realized that to a certain extent, these modifications had disappeared from the archives, or that information was missing- a situation that could lead to serious environmental consequences. For example, old underground storage tanks had been left in place without any remediation measures. In a worst-case scenario, rust corrosion could cause any fuel product left in the tanks to leak out into the surrounding soil. Since 2008 ÅF has performed a large-scale inventory of Preem’s entire station network. Through interviews and archive searches, it was possible to identify the stations in need of further investigation. The selected stations were then searched

50

with a specially designed metal detector. The unused cisterns that were found were recorded with GPS. This results in technical documentation to be used in the event of future closures and rebuilding and as a basis for environmental liability investigation and control in connection with excavation work. The concept of risk classification, which has been developed by ÅF’s environmental experts, is used to prevent soil and groundwater contamination that results in high costs. The concept has also been sold on to four other companies in Sweden and Norway.

Innovative site remediation. The Signalisten shopping centre in the city of Sundbyberg north of Stockholm is a group of carefully renovated historical industrial buildings that have been tastefully converted into a shopping centre containing a hotel, shops and restaurants. Prior to the construction of the shopping centre, Alecta discovered that the site was heavily contaminated by previous activities in the area. Among other things, there were large amounts of chlorinated solvents embedded in the soil layers. Tests showed levels far higher than the permitted guide values. Ă…F was given the task of remedying this so that

construction could move forward. Remediation was carried out using a so-called in-situ method, where a chemical solution is injected into the soil to break down the contaminants. The method had been used previously in the USA but was now used for the first time in Europe. Control measurements taken after performing site remediation showed that soil contamination had fallen below the guide value levels.

A circular economy for H&M. The vision of the H&M group is to lead the change towards circular and renewable fashion, and one of their ambitions is to become 100% circular and renewable. To become fully circular, a circular economy of all products involved in their operations - including packaging - is necessary. During 2017/2018, Ă…F conducted a pre-study on all packaging used by the H&M group and developed a circular packaging strategy showing how to reach a circular economy of packaging within the H&M Group, globally. Ă…F also supported in the beginning of the organizational implementation of the strategy. A circular economy of packaging has many benefits for H&M as well as for their customers. Additionally, it has benefits from a larger perspective, both environmentally and socially. For example the purchase of packaging material is reduced and kept in a closed loop, and the amount of plastics that end up in the environment will reduce considerably.

Gigafactory for Northvolt. Northvolt, a high quality producer of batteries focused on electrification and renewable energy storage plans to build Europe’s largest lithium-ion battery manufacturing factory in partnership with the municipality of Skellefteå in northern Sweden. ÅF has assisted with the permits, technical description and the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), aswell as several subinvestigations such as water recipient assessment, air analysis and a site localization study. The crucial part of the project was to deliver complicated technical investigations and

calculations of the predicted impact of the factory in a very tight time frame. Electrification and renewable energy storage are the keys to a carbon neutral society. Batteries will enable this transition. The auto industry alone will need batteries in huge numbers to replace fossil fuels with electricity. The factory will be one of the largest in the world and will employ approx. 2.500 people.

The world’s cleanest water. Sweden has some of the world’s cleanest water. But still, its water quality leaves a lot to be desired, and thus the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management was established in 2011. By developing IT systems for the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management, ÅF is helping improve the quality of the country’s lakes, rivers, streams and coastal areas. The new systems will enable the Agency to keep track of which types of fish are being caught, and by whom - so-called “sea to plate” traceability. ÅF’s assignment involves developing a range of IT system support tools in close collaboration with operational staff and the Agency’s own IT technicians.

An accident-free future. Volvo Cars in Sweden has a vision that by 2020 no one will be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo car, Therefore, the company has initiated a new project with non-hit cars. Ă…F has developed a new sensor fusion technology for Volvo that will reduce the risk of accidents. The goal is for the non-hit car to be able to manage all conceivable traffic scenarios on its own. Ă…F has been active in all phases of the project. Much of this work has been devoted to the visualization tool that fuses together signals to create a 360-degree view around the vehicle that is as realistic and seamless as possible. The project is an important piece of the puzzle in realizing the zero vision; zero people killed or seriously injured in traffic accidents.

Perstorp reduces energy consumption with the right chemistry. The vision for Sweden-based Perstorp, a global supplier of specialty chemicals, is to contribute to a more sustainable world through innovative chemical solutions, greater use of renewable resources and environmentally-friendly processes. ÅF was therefore contacted when one of Perstorp’s chemical plants was found to be suffering from corrosion. ÅF identified the cause and proposed a solution that saved money,

60

increased the plant’s capacity and reduced energy consumption by 30 percent. The solution will lead to a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by 4,900 tonnes per year, which is equal to the emissions from heating 750 mid-sized single-family homes, and the cost savings are estimated at SEK 5.5 million annually.

More efficient processes at Skoghall Paper Mill.

Because an attractive local community is critical for LKAB’s operations, it is vital for the company to minimize its environmental impact and contribute to sustainable development. Among other things, LKAB have started work on the municipality of Kiruna’s new energy system, in which waste heat from the mining process will be used to provide all of Kiruna with Sweden’s cheapest district heating. ÅF is taking part in several assignments for LKAB to optimize the mining industry’s processes and reduce its climate impact. ÅF helps clients like LKAB to meet their sustainability targets by contributing know-how and expertise.

Skoghall is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of paperboard for the packaging of liquid foodstuffs. Every day, 100 semi-trailer trucks and two freight trains full of timber arrive at the paper mill. The timber is debarked, chipped and processed into pulp, which is then transformed into paperboard. In less than an hour, one of the carton machines can produce enough paperboard for two million milk cartons. ÅF was tasked with optimizing the processes at the paper mill outside Karlstad in Sweden. The two-year energy efficiency project has enabled the mill to decrease its oil consumption, reuse the electricity produced by the boilers and reduce its emissions of oxygen-depleting substances into the water by 10 percent. These measures will contribute towards future production volumes and thereby also to job security at the paper mill.

Hydropower on a high level. Nant de Drance is a new pumped storage hydroelectric power station located in an underground cavern in the Swiss Alps. The power station utilizes the enormous hydropower potential that the Swiss Alps offer. By exploiting the altitude difference of 350 metres between two existing water reservoirs, around 2.5 billion kWh of energy per year is generated. The cavern houses six 150 MW pump turbines installed to drive the power station. The turbines feed the water through underground

62

waterways between the two reservoirs to produce and store the energy for later use. The power station is designed to generate electricity during peak load periods and to balance the intermittent and variable electricity production provided by renewable energy sources. ÅF is responsible for the concept and overall design of the entire project, which won the “Major Tunneling Project Award” in 2014. The system is expected to be operational in 2018.

Powerful investment in Bosnia and Hercegovina. The Stanari thermal power plant has a planned production capacity of two million MWh of energy per year, and is currently the largest energy investment in Bosnia and Hercegovina. The new power plant will create new jobs, improve living conditions and stimulate economic activity in the region. The plant will have very high environmental performance, with emissions significantly lower than required by local environmental regulations. The new plant contains a circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler with a textile filter that

enables the use of local coal from an existing mine. The lower emissions are made possible by a relatively low incineration temperature and the facility’s use of effective measures to reduce CO2 emissions. ÅF’s assignment includes overall project management, design review, quality control and supervision of assembly and commissioning of the power plant. In addition, ÅF will provide the client with technical assistance throughout the project.
