A very warm welcome awaits you in Highland Perthshire, home of The Enchanted Forest, Scotland’s multi-award-winning sound and light extravaganza. Right at the heart of Scotland, our natural environment and community combine to give you an unforgettable experience of the area. With magical woodlands, music festivals, adventure activities, country markets, wildlife safaris and traditional Highland Games, it is THE place to be. Browse our calendar for some of the other events & activities on offer, and explore the brochure for information on places to eat and stay.

Charity Night Thursday 28 September Last year we held a Charity Night and we were delighted to be able to give the sum of £2,500 to each of our chosen charities: British Heart Foundation, Kidney Kids and Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance all of which are very active in the area. This year the organisations benefitting from our Charity Night will be Tayside Mountain Rescue, Alzheimer Scotland and Giraffe, again, all very worthwhile causes.

Run by The Enchanted Forest Community Trust, a small group of dedicated locals, and supported by many businesses in the area, The Enchanted Forest continues to attract ever-increasing numbers of visitors. From modest numbers 15 years ago, last year we were delighted to welcome more than 70,000 people to the event and we are anticipating even more visitors to this year’s show: OIR AN UISGE.

Thursday 28 September to Sunday 29 October Oir An Uisge, The Enchanted Forest in its 16th year, will treat visitors to a sound and light experience which will delight those who’ve been before, as well as those coming for the first time. Fusing the natural environment around the forest and loch, with a kaleidoscope of colour and original music, this year’s show will appeal to young and old alike. There are interactive elements, some spectacular effects and a host of new surprises on the loch and in the trees. Over the past 15 years this magical sound and light extravaganza has enticed almost 400,000 visitors in all weathers and generated approximately £2.5m of income every year for local Highland Perthshire businesses. This year The Enchanted Forest will, once again, run for four weeks and five weekends, extending right through October.

There is also ample on-street parking in Pitlochry and this is free of charge in the evenings. Storytelling Yurt

Claire has been spinning stories for Enchanted Forest visitors for seven years and specialises in ancient, traditional fairy tales from Scotland and the nomadic peoples of the North. She accompanies some of these with her harp, kantele or bodhran. This is Lindsey’s fifth year with us in the forest. She grew up listening to stories, reading them, making them up and weaving them into her various careers. The stories run every half hour (please check the website for times), last approximately 20 minutes and are suitable for all ages. Entry is on a first come-first served basis and there is space for a limited number of wheelchairs at each session.

Stories cost ÂŁ1 per person.

Merchandise There will be selected items of Enchanted Forest branded merchandise for sale again this year: children and adult t-shirts, magnets, rain ponchos, eco-friendly torches and beanie hats. Cash only please.

Catering Hot food and drinks will be available in the forest with the addition, this year, of toasted marshmallows, toffee apples and hot chocolate. Once again, cash only please.

Charities Our official charities for 2017 are: Tayside Mountain Rescue Alzheimer Scotland Giraffe

EnchantedForest.org.uk

Due to continuing popularity, we’re delighted to welcome back our storytellers Claire Hewitt and Lindsey Gibb. Claire and Lindsey will enchant you with magical tales, many featuring the flora, fauna and other-worldly creatures of forests all over the globe.

Meet the creative team behind the spectacle Lighting KATE

SIMON

The visual design process starts with choosing a theme which will bring the whole show together. Inspiration can come from anywhere; from art to architecture, from nature to newspapers. The route through the forest is planned with careful consideration to the audience’s journey through visual spectacle and moments of calm, to stimulate the imaginations of children and adults alike. We work collaboratively with the sound designers over a period of several months to create a fully imagined show. We then produce a set of plans detailing placement of each piece of kit. Once set up we work through several nights programming the lighting with a digital control system to synchronise with the music, all ready for the audience to arrive on opening night.

Kate Bonney & Simon Hayes

Sound

RJ

The composition of the music and sound is collaborative and organic. We work with the lighting designers to share conceptual ideas and describe specific technical effects we hope to employ. Key dramatic moments are identified and the music is then developed and refined over a period of months into distinct pieces for different parts of the site. The music on-site is reproduced through an array of different loudspeakers, all of which have to be carefully positioned and balanced. On the run-up to opening night we spend a week on site mixing and fine-tuning our work, using a computer-based playback system, synchronised with the lighting console, allowing the Lighting Designers to create their work in sync with the music.

Aberfeldy & Kenmore

Blair Atholl

Sitting on the bank of the River Tay and surrounded by magnificent scenery, Aberfeldy is a busy market town offering a wide range of independent shops, cafes, restaurants, galleries and hotels – it even has its own cinema, The Birks. It’s an excellent place from which to explore mountains, moorland and lochs, all teeming with abundant wildlife. There’s plenty of scope nearby for other activities, with Highland Safaris, where you can get really close up to red deer and the Crannog Centre, a short distance away in the pretty conservation village of Kenmore, where you can experience different aspects of Iron Age life.

Small, but perfectly formed, this delightful Victorian village nestles just outside the walls of Blair Castle, home of the Dukes of Atholl for the past 700 years. Take a tour of the castle’s attics or a walk round the magnificent walled Hercules Garden with its sculptures and duck ponds. Hire a bike in the village or stop for refreshments at the picturesque Watermill & Tearoom and see the one of Scotland’s 11 working watermills in action. The mill, which dates from the 1590s, has a working mill wheel and you can buy flour or bread made with wheat and oats that are still ground in the traditional way.

Birnam & Dunkeld

Kinloch Rannoch

If you’re a fan of Peter Rabbit or Jeremy Fisher, then pop along to the Beatrix Potter Exhibition and garden, where you’ll meet all your old friends. Neighbouring Dunkeld is a pretty village on the River Tay, offering quirky independent shops selling anything from kitchenware and cashmere to antiques, locally smoked salmon and bespoke jewellery. There are regular live gigs with traditional Scottish music, a National Trust shop and a beautiful cathedral set amongst majestic trees sweeping down to the edge of the River Tay. Nearby is the Loch of the Lowes wildlife reserve where you might catch a glimpse of the breeding ospreys.

This tiny village sits at the foot of Schiehallion, a towering Munro (a Scottish mountain over 3,000 feet) and, although a little further away, it is well worth the effort. The well-stocked village shop offers a friendly welcome and everything from food and wine to maps and guide books. There’s a cosy cafe round the corner with a gift shop and gallery to browse in and the village is surrounded by miles of pristine Scottish scenery to explore – moors, woodland, rivers, lochs and all of it teeming with wildlife. Blow away the cobwebs and fill your lungs with pure Highland air.

The Queen’s View, Loch Tummel

EnchantedForest.org.uk

Kirkmichael

18

A short drive from Pitlochry over the top of Moulin Moor, the pretty village of Kirkmichael lies astride the banks of the River Ardle with three hotels and a busy communityrun shop. There are some spectacular walking trails and you can even follow the route that the cattle rustlers from the olden days used to take, thieving along the Cateran Trail. If you’re a fan of more 21st century activities, grab your compass and see if you can hunt down some of the abundant geo-cache sites in the area. There are regular talks at the Session House, quiz nights at the local pub and, from time to time, live music in the various hostelries.

Pitlochry & Killiecrankie At the heart of the action is the bustling Victorian town of Pitlochry, from where everything is within easy reach. While you’re here, take in a performance at Pitlochry Festival Theatre, the ‘theatre in the hills’. The main season continues until 14 October and this year’s Autumn Classic, Our Man in Havana (by Graham Greene) opens on 22 October. In addition, there are distilleries to visit, golf at Pitlochry’s Hidden Gem course, spectacular views from the top of Ben y Vrackie, the Soldier’s Leap in Killiecrankie, tea rooms, galleries, gift shops, restaurants and accommodation to suit all tastes & pockets.
