BREANNA WILLIAMS BIOGRAPHY Growing up in a small town in Tennessee, my parents always expressed the need to be charitable to those in need. My parent always made that value prevalent in our home. I have three adopted siblings that have allowed me to grow as a more patient, kind, observant, and humble person. The experiences that arrived from these adoptions have allowed me to see into the need of social service. I am curious to discover how architecture can interact with these social needs and benefit the social realm it is within. The process of investigation and research intrigue me and allow me to create connections through cultural and social needs. I am hoping to continue to investigate and evolve my interests and learn more about Architecture and its justice to society.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY I am a third-year architect student at the University of Tennessee Knoxville. The Architecture program at UTK creates a stimulating, scholarly environment, in which I have grown as a person and in design. This experience has allowed me to explore my interests and push them farther to discover new interests. The world of Architecture has shown me a large variety of interests of others and has helped me to form a direction to pursue. My interest in the vast domain of architecture is in the realm of social service.

As I investigate perusing the first stages in the profession, I am eager to learn and develop my skills. Working in the retail business has allowed me to work on my social interaction, teamwork, and leadership skills, as well as organization. However, applying these skills in a professional environment is a task I am interested in developing. I have had previous experience as a draftsman for a school to work program for three years and have reached a level of proficiency in AutoCAD.

COMMUNAL CONNECTIVITY “THE PORCH PROJECT DATE: Fall 2017; Third Year BARCH LOCATION: Knoxville, Mechanicsville, Tennessee Knoxville College Campus

The campus of Knoxville College has stood as a beacon of hope to the African American Community of Knoxville, Tennessee since 1865. The campus is rooted in the labor, strength, hope, and determination of the students that attended. These students and their legacy of community servants and leaders is what the Family Sanctuary is all about. This Sanctuary will provide a service to the community of Mechanicsville and allow for an outreach for Knoxville College. The program acts as a domestic shelter for women and children in need. The housing units located in the historic faculty cottages will consist of four two-bedroom units, four studio apartments, and a standalone single-family home. These units open to a grand lawn in the rear. This space takes on many forms from a grove of trees for privacy and fun games of hide and seek to the peaceful garden located on the east end of the lawn. The east end also houses a humble community room that blends

with the landscape. To the west end of the lawn sitting atop a hill is Wallace Hall. The former nursing school will house financial assistance, GED class, child care, psychologists, and housing assistance. Wallace will act as the threshold onto the college campus and allow for the residents to enter the campus. These resources are in place to create a stable ground for these families to continue beyond this tragedy.

Campus within a Campus The campus of Knoxville College overlaps with the purposed Campus of Community Resources.

Community Amenities

The neighborhood of Mechanicsville houses many community resource facilities. The campus of Knoxville College can contribute to these resources by allowing the south portion of the campus along Reynolds Street to be utilized by the city.

Mechanicsville Zoning

The neighborhood of Mechanicsville is composed of four zones. These zones are identified by specific characteristics.

Streets and Boundaries The neighborhood of Mechanicsville is constricted by the highway and road systems.

Figure 1.9 Family Sanctuary Perspective The autumn day is coming to an end with the students leaving campus and the families headed home. The yard becomes alive with movement. Children run through the grove playing tag while mothers gather to chatter about their day. The windows begin to shine their lights on the yard below as families settle in for the night. The leave fall to the ground dancing through the wind. The long shadows mask the ground as night slowly approaches.

Figure 1.9 Knoxville College Campus holds significant value to the lives of alumni and the African American community in Knoxville. This campus once presented opportunity to the neglected African Americans. The hope and opportunities that the campus once thrived upon is now dwindled, however, I perceive that the placement of a Family Sanctuary would allow for these values to still be withheld on the campus while presenting opportunity for future enrollment to the school. This design does purpose its challenges that I have fallen short in addressing. The issue of security is a very important part of a domestic

shelter, and the facility I purposed does lack this necessity. The use of trees and groves has begun to buffer these edges, but not solve the issue. The residence staying at the sanctuary need to feel safe to heal and my neglect to place these measures in to my design is a down fall. Although this is true, the idea and research behind the design was a key driver for the design and became the design itself.

ARCHIVING THE RELIC PROJECT DATE: Spring 2017; Second Year BARCH LOCATION: Cincinnati, Ohio; University of Cincinnati Aronoff Center for Design

The University of Cincinnati campus is a composition of architecture. Architects such as Morphosis, Frank Gehry, Micheal Graves, Peter Eisenman, and many more have designed for the university. This project focused on Peter Eisenman’s Aronoff Center for Design. The program was to create an addition to the existing design placing it within the site according to individual analysis. The design process began with designing an archive for and Andrea Pozzo double fache engraving. This design would then be placed in the edition for exhibition. The final design was a six story black slate structure. This design was centered around circulation and views. The circulation was centered around a large atrium that allowed for light and spacial connections on every level. The first floor allows for circulation from the Aronoff to the Alms creating a connection throughout the center. Each level houses an exhibition space for viewing of relics and designs. The program also houses conference

rooms, offices, storage, photo lab, and archive. A view of the campus and city beyond is made possible from the roof top garden. This design was to create clarity in the circulation and provide a moment of relief in the existing program.

This project allowed for me to explore light and how it moves throughout space. The down falls to this project were in my used of representation. I explored the used of photoshop in this project and this in ways benefited and in other hindered the representation. The large structure reads as a very dark facade while in reality the color would be a softer grey. The placement of program in plan was very well worked out but the sectional organization has room for improvement. With the resourced of other courses I was able to understand the construction and make up of my designs which allowed me to grasp a better understanding of what it takes to create the built world.

CODING DESIGN

PROJECT DATE: Fall 2016; Second Year BARCH LOCATION: Homberg Drive, Knoxville, Tennessee Bearden Village

Coding design is a live /work unit for a tech based company moving their business to Knoxville, Tennessee. The structure is a steel and concrete hybrid expressing the idea of coding on the facade. The heavy stereotomic frame is housing a light steel tectonic structure inside.. The wood louvers are placed on the east facade to help with high rays of sun in the morning hours. Large louvers are also placed on the east end of the open circulation to prevent winter winds from entering the central courtyard. The south opening is open the sun and summer winds. The units range from studio style to two bedroom units. This design was allowed me to explore material, structure, and climate control.

BREANNA WILLIAMS|26

Figure 3.1 Live/Work The top three floors are programed for residential use while the first floor is a large office space.

Figure 3.2 Building Parti The building Parti is series of code expressed on the facade. The till being 0, purple 1, and the blue a break in the code.

27|PORTFOLIO

Figure 3.3 Elevations The front facade (top) faces east and opens to a busy street. The louver systems placed are to harshen the morning sunlight and prevent the winter winds. The south faced (left) is open to the light and also has few louvers to shade during the evening hours.

Figure 3.5 Section Perspective

The live/work unit project allowed for me to examine structure and strengthen my Autocad skills. The plan and organization of program was the focus of this design and allowed me to understand how spaces interact. The faults in this design were in the expression of the inner structure compared to the outer concrete structure. By placing a small air gap around the steel structure this would create a frame for the life of the building.
