• Tennessee is preparing to embark on its 102nd season of varsity basketball and its sixth season under head coach Bruce Pearl. • Brevard College is an NCAA Division II member located in Brevard, N.C., which is the hometown of UT athletic director Mike Hamilton. Brevard is a member of the South Atlantic Conference. The school became a four-year institution in 1999. • Hamilton worked in the BC cafeteria from the time he was 15-years-old until he graduated from Brevard High School. His brother-in-law, Greg Reese, played basketball at Brevard in the mid-1980s when it was a junior college. • The Volunteers are 14-1 in exhibition games during the Pearl era, including a perfect 10-0 in Thompson-Boling Arena. The lone loss was a 103-98 setback against Pezinok BK in Bratislava, Slovakia, during UT’s summer tour of Europe in 2007. • In exhibition games under Pearl, Tennessee outscores its opponents 104.3 to 69.7 ppg for a scoring margin of +34.6 ppg. • The Vols’ roster features 10 returning lettermen and five scholarship newcomers. Returning starters are junior guard Scotty Hopson and senior center Brian Williams. • Tennessee was picked by the media to finish fourth in the SEC Eastern Division. Florida was picked to win the East (and the overall league title), while Mississippi State was the media’s preseason pick to win the West. • The Vols’ top returning scorer, Scotty Hopson was named to the media’s preseason All-SEC first team and was a second-team selection on the SEC head coaches’ preseason All-SEC team. • The Vols found a way to win with tenacious defense last season, as UT ranked in the top 30 among NCAA Division I teams in 3-point field-goal defense (13th, .297), field-goal defense (21st, .396) and turnover margin (30th, 2.9).

2010-11

VOLUNTEERS BASKETBALL

Tennessee Trends • Tennessee has an all-time record of 1,471-930-2 in 101 seasons of varsity basketball. • In all nine of his seasons as a Division I head coach, Bruce Pearl’s teams have won at least 10 games in conference play. • Bruce Pearl is 22-16 vs. ranked teams at UT. • UT is 71-6 (.922) when scoring 80 or more points under the direction of Bruce Pearl. • Tennessee is 55-4 (.932) during the Bruce Pearl era when it holds it opponents to 40 percent shooting or worse.

Several Milestones Within Reach This Season Tennessee needs 29 wins to reach 1,500 all-time victories, dating to the inaugural 1908-09 season ... Junior guard Scotty Hopson is 238 points shy of becoming the 43rd member of Tennessee’s 1,000point club ... And head coach Bruce Pearl, in his 19th collegiate season, needs only seven wins to reach 450 for his career ... Pearl could potentially log his 150th win at Tennessee as well this season, as he is 24 wins from that milestone ... Pearl has averaged 25.2 wins per season in his five full years on Rocky Top.

Noting Brevard Brevard College posted a 21-10 (10-6 South Atlantic Conference) record last season and is coming off a record-setting campaign in which the team either tied or set team records in 28 different single game, single season and team single season records ... Brevard rode its successful season to a 2010 South Atlantic Conference Tournament championship, making it to the NCAA Southeast Regional tournament for the first time since the program became a full member of NCAA Division II in 2008 ... The Brevard College Athletic Department is sending a fan bus to Wednesday night’s game.

Lots Of Length This Year With an average height of 6-5, this year’s Tennessee roster boasts great length once again ... A total of 10 players—or 64.8 percent of the team—is 6-5 or taller ... Only point guard Melvin Goins, at 5-11, is less than 6-feet-tall ... Impressively, five Vols are 6-8 or taller, with center Brian Williams checking in at a team-high 6-10.

Vols Ranked In 20 Straight AP Polls Tennessee has been ranked in 20 consecutive AP polls dating back the 2009-10 preseason poll ... It’s the second longest streak of its kind during the Bruce Pearl era, trailing a period of 32 straight poll appearances from 2007-09 ... Last season, only nine teams—Kansas, Kentucky, Duke, Purdue, West Virginia, Michigan State, Villanova, Georgetown and Tennessee—went the entire season without failing to appear in the AP top 25.

Pearl Predicts Physicality Vols head coach Bruce Pearl has mentioned multiple times this preseason that this is his most physical team at Tennessee ... According to senior guard Josh Bone: “We put a big emphasis on being more physical this year. Defense will be a big key to how far we go. Judging by our early workouts, we’re going to apply a lot of ball pressure on every position on the floor. It’s not going to be easy for our opponents. I know I wouldn’t want to be on the other team having to play against us this year.” Stong National Television Presence Tennessee will play a minimum of 17 nationally televised games during just the regular season (CBS, ESPN, ESPNU or ESPN2) ... And if the Vols win their two regional games in November’s NIT Season Top-Off, they will play two more nationally televised games at New York’s famous Madison Square Garden. ESPN’s College GameDay Returns For Historic Men’s/Women’s Doubleheader The Tennessee basketball program’s meteoric rise in prominence under head coach Bruce Pearl continues this season, as ESPN announced in August that the Volunteers will be featured in one of its popular College GameDay Driven by State Farm® matchups for the fourth straight season ... What makes this season’s GameDay broadcast especially historic, however, is that it will precede the franchise’s first-ever same-school doubleheader ... The Vols host the Commodores Jan. 15 at noon ET, and then the Tennessee Lady Vols, led by coaching icon Pat Summitt, will play the Vanderbilt women at 8 p.m. ET ... This marks the second time in three years that College GameDay will broadcast live from Thompson-Boling Arena ... And with North Carolina and UCLA not taking part in GameDay matchups this season, Tennessee now owns the nation’s longest active streak of GameDay appearances (four).

Vols Part Of Loaded 2011 Maui Field The Vols will make their second appearance at the EA Sports Maui Invitational next season ... Along with the perennial tournament host school, Chaminade, the 2011 field includes Duke, Georgetown, Kansas, Memphis, Michigan, Tennessee and UCLA ... Four newly-added Division I mainland tournament teams will be announced at a later date ... The Vols previously competed in the Maui Invitational in 2004, finishing fourth ... And as an assistant coach at Iowa, Bruce Pearl helped lead the Hawkeyes to the 1987 Maui title, with wins over Stanford, Kansas and Villanova. High-Percentage Hall True freshman forward Kenny Hall led the Vols in field-goal percentage last season, shooting .578 (52-of-90) from the field—and .617 (29-of-47) in regular-season SEC play ... He ranked third on the team in dunks with 31 ... That means 59.6 percent of Hall’s field goals last season were slam dunks; that’s as “high-percentage” as it gets.

VOLUNTEERS BASKETBALL

Legends In The Rafters Four Tennessee basketball legends are memorialized with banners in the Thompson-Boling Arena rafters ... The UT men’s basketball program had never retired a jersey prior to the 2006-07 season, but after nearly 100 years of hardwood history, Bernard King (1975-77) was the first player to earn that distinguished honor ... King’s No. 53 jersey was officially retired during a halftime ceremony at the Feb. 13, 2007, home game against Kentucky (UT won 89-85) ... During that same ceremony, banners honoring longtime head coach Ray Mears (1962-77) and beloved radio “Voice of the Vols” John Ward (1964-99) also were unveiled ... Then on March 2, 2008, Ernie Grunfeld (1974-77) became the second UT player to receive the ultimate honor, when his No. 22 jersey was unveiled in the rafters during halftime of Tennessee’s 63-60 victory over Kentucky.

Unbelievable Increase In Attendance Tennessee’s average home attendance has increased by 6,943 fans per game since Bruce Pearl’s arrival on Rocky Top ... Tennessee’s increase in attendance is higher than the average attendance of more than 200 Division I programs, including teams from the SEC, ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac 10, Conference USA, WAC, Mountain West and Missouri Valley conferences ... Tennessee ranked fifth nationally home attendance in Pearl’s first year at UT (2005-06) and has ranked fourth each year since.

Tennessee Stands Alone Tennessee is the only Division I school ever to rank in the top five nationally in attendance for football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball in the same year ... UT accomplished that feat for the seventh time in 2009-10. Tennessee Fourth In The Nation In Attendance For Fourth Straight Year Tennessee finished last season ranked fourth nationally in average home attendance for the fourth consecutive year ... The Vols have finished in the top five nationally for five straight years ... Below is a look at 2009-10’s attendance leaders: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

School Games Kentucky 18 Syracuse 19 Louisville 19 Tennessee 16 North Carolina 19

Total 433,989 420,890 368,537 306,680 337,934

Average 24,110 22,152 19,397 19,168 17,786

Home Crowds of 20,000 Nothing New For Vols Tennessee has played in front of 40 home crowds of 20,000 or larger during the Bruce Pearl era ... The crowd of 22,326 for the 2009 Gonzaga game marked the largest at ThompsonBoling Arena since capacity was reduced from 24,535 to 21,678 prior to the 2007-08 season.

The Volunteers At Thompson-Boling Arena Thompson-Boling Arena hosted its 23rd season in 2009-10 ... The Vols have won nearly 75 percent of their games in Thompson-Boling Arena and have ranked in the top 10 nationally in attendance 11 times, including this year, when UT ranked fourth nationally with 19,168 fans per game. • Tennessee is 270-92 (.746) in 23 seasons in Thompson-Boling Arena. • Since the 1998 season, the Vols are 170-33 (.837) in Thompson-Boling Arena. • The Vols are 80-24 against SEC teams at home over the last 11 seasons. • Tennessee has won 27 of its last 31 SEC games at Thompson-Boling Arena. • UT has won 97 of its last 106 home games against non-conference opponents. • UT is 36-2 in home games against non-conference opponents under Bruce Pearl. • Tennessee finished both the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons with a 16-0 home record. • This is the third straight season in which Sporting News has tabbed Thompson-Boling Arena the “best homecourt advantage” in the Southeastern Conference.

Vols Building New Home Win Streak The Vols own a current five-game home win streak ... After posting back-to-back 16-0 home records in 2006-07 and 2007-08, the Vols turned in an uncharacteristic 10-5 mark at Thompson-Boling Arena in 2008-09 before going 15-1 last year ... Now in his sixth season at UT, Bruce Pearl is 70-8 at ThompsonBoling Arena. Vols Enjoying World-Class Facilities The University of Tennessee invested more than $35 million into its basketball facilities between the end of the 2006-07 campaign and the start of 200708 ... During that eight-month period, UT added a basketball-only practice facility and began the first phase of renovations to Thompson-Boling Arena ... The $19 million first phase of renovations included the addition of 32 luxury suites that are located in the existing north balcony, a loge area just below the luxury suites that includes 166 side court seats, new seats for the entire arena, a $3 million centerhung scoreboard and concourse refurbishments, such as graphics and other amenities ... The renovations took Thompson-Boling’s capacity down from 24,535 to 21,678 ... The Vols’ new state-of-the-art basketball practice facility, Pratt Pavilion, houses two full-size gymnasiums, one for each of the men’s and women’s basketball teams, as well as an athletic training room, weight room and film-study room ... Prior to this season, a pedestrian bridge was constructed leading from the G-10 parking garage to the arena, an elevator was added at the arena’s northwest end as a customer service amenity and new exterior signage has been installed on the building’s facade ... The UT athletics department announced in November that it plans to begin a renovation of the men’s and women’s basketball offices at the arena in April, creating a new and impressive “front door” for the basketball programs.

Noting Harris

• Coach Pearl has called Harris the “most mature and hardest-working freshman” he has ever had. • Pearl has compared Harris’ skill-set to that of Larry Bird, as Harris • Fits the Dane Bradshaw and Tyler Smith “point forward” mold that is vital to Pearl’s offensive system. • Will create advantage/disadvantage situations due to his ability to take 4-men off the dribble. • Is also a tough matchup because of his great shooting touch, his knack for finishing around the basket and his ability to push the fast break. • Boasts tremendous character and work ethic. • Naturally makes the four teammates on the court with him better players.

His nickname is “All-Business” ... Was a consensus top-10 recruit and was rated by Scout.com as the nation’s top power forward prospect ... Is the seventh McDonald’s All-America to sign with UT and joins Scotty Hopson as the second during the Bruce Pearl era ... Cousin of Phoenix Suns center Channing Frye ...
