The Interview With Paul Knight With Chris Gordon Hi all. After working on my podcast for a few years now I have been given the opportunity to kick starting my new column. I’ll be interviewing the charismatic and straight-talking Award-Winning film Director Paul Knight of London Knights Productions. My first question to Paul How did you get into creating and writing films? Paul replied Well this is a long story. I always wanted to write about certain stories and escapades and things that people write bestselling books about. I bumped into someone, a similar background to me, just different neck of the woods. He too was writing a book about his escapades and we got talking and he always said “I'm turning my book into a film. I'm going to make a film”. So, every time I saw him or spoke to him, I’d say, you know, I've got no interest in making a film, but I find it interesting you're going to make a film. I saw him again at the book launch of his second book. The book launch was on a Thursday and by Monday I had written my first scripts and we said, we're going to go film it and prove it. You don't need money, you don't need this. We're just going to go off and do it. And that's what we did. I was in my forties. No training, no, nothing. So, any mistake you could make we made it, it was terrible, absolutely terrible. But it gave me the bug and I thought “I enjoy this”. Then I said we're going into it. It's nice to hear that you said, right, let's go and do this. And you're right, you don't need big budgets, you really don't, to make a decent film. And I think that, especially in today's market, as you know, you've got YouTube, you've got Netflix, you've got Vimeo, you got all these avenues where you can actually just let your films get seen by the world and video on demand. You're not limited to getting a big budget to get it on the center of the screen That's right. I mean it's not the old school time, where you have to know someone to get that. And obviously the equipment that like the kids today are taken for granted. I mean you look at it, the winner at Sundance last year, shot it on his iPhone. Just go out, be creative, get what you want to get.
You’ve written about nine films? I know this one's been going for a while too? We originally filmed Landscape in June 2011. That's taken a long time. But like you said, it's worth it. It’s been at “Out of the Cannes” film festival where you came away with four awards for Best Director, Actor, Actress, and Best Supporting Actor as well. So impressive! Yeah, well that's more of a testament I think to those in front of the camera. So how did you get someone like Danny Midwinter? How'd you go about approaching people like this? We laugh about it now, but when his name come up then someone gave him my phone number and he phoned me up and said, “look, don't dismiss me. Let me come and audition for you”. People like Danny, they studied the craft, they love the craft and they love what they do, and they love the way they interact with things. And you've got another film you are working on? Yes, it’s completely different to “Landscape”. This one's more action in a nutshell. A guy comes out of prison after 10 years and someone he knows has been murdered. He’s told that it's one of these people that did it then he just goes on a rampage and then obviously the police must find out why and there's a few twists and turns but it's more action than obviously the psychological “Landscape” is. Excellent. That's definitely my type of film. Is there anything you'd love to say to maybe people that are out there who are reading? A few words of encouragement? Those who know about the journey will know that when I say I really appreciate the support of the people that stood by us and didn't run and stuck with us, then they'll always have my internal gratitude, but for every other filmmaker out there, never, never let anyone tell you something can't be done. Just keep at it. It could take a month. It could take 10 years, just keep at it, and you'll be surprised what you'll achieve at the end. A big thank you to Paul Knight for the Interview. NEW KID ON THE BLOCK ASHLEIGH HARLEY 2018 has been a stunning year for Ashleigh Harley. Over the last 10 months (at time of going to press), Â she has scooped nearly 40 accolades, for her film making efforts. A young lady with a clear vision, one she hopes to share with an even larger audience. Her debut short Film 'The Wall of Lyon', offers a small glimpse into a fantasy/Sci -Fi world Ashleigh has been working on tirelessly since the tender age of 12. A trilogy of works is set to follow. One such festival where Ashleigh was given the honour to have her work selected and screened was this year's Out of The Can Film Festival. Â Culminating in a win for her music video entitled 'Judge Me' which was created to raise awareness for the short film which was also screened at the festival. A micro budget is a enormous hurdle for any indie filmmaker, so Ashleigh had a huge task on her hands for such an ambitious project.
The budding filmmaker faced the challenges with vigour and successfully fulfilled the roles herself. Writing, directing, casting, locations, costume/character design, CGI, artwork, composing score and themes, editing grading, foley the list is endless, even down to the the voice of the beast which appears in the film. Months and months and months of work at a computer station with hardware, software and not to mention Ashleigh's resolve stretched to breaking point. 'The entire process was very difficult' but I learned so much in every respect of film making', she says. The film was shot on the rugged and beautiful landscape of the Brecon Beacons in winter. Ashleigh says she's the happiest when she on set, "I just love it!". The result of that dedication was obvious when Ashleigh had hypothermia from being waist deep in sub zero temperatures in a lake to get a shot for many hours. "After all that, the scene didn't make the finished film", she says. "Editing the final footage was tough, but you can't make a decision to keep a shot in just because you went through hell to get it!" Ashleigh recalls one of her favourite on location days. One ambition she had long held. A scene involving 13 stunning hoses galloping down the beach giving chase. "That day was magical" she recalls. Ashleigh had previously put out a request via social media for volunteers who wanted to help out with their steeds.
"We were inundated with kind offers and I'm extremely grateful for the patience and help they gave me to realise my vision". Safety was also a major consideration as well as management of the riders and horses. Ashleigh was fortunate to have that expertise and help from well know actor and equestrian stunt expert Wolfie Hughes, I am so grateful to have had his help alongside other volunteers and crew members who had freely given their time on that memorable day. So what's next for Ashleigh? " I'm always working on different projects and ideas in unison. I have to have variety to keep myself creatively vibrant.
I'm now looking to make the feature version of 'The Wall of Lyon'. I have a documentary film I'm currently planning and of course the next part of my Sci-Fi series of writings, which is going to keep me fully occupied". Being able to share my stories with an audience is the greatest privilege and I can only hope that people will want to know more about the fictional characters and world's I create. It's clear that there's are lot more to come from Ashleigh. Follow her now via social media and as the strap line from the film says, find out what lies beyond.

The Artist SARAH SMITH So Netflix have been showing Skin Wars so we thought it would be good to chat with the UK`s very own Sarah Smith. Well known Bodie Artist from Leicester, United Kingdom Sarah Started In 2012 I began face painting followed by body painting in 2014.I began airbrushing in 2015 and this has rapidly become my favourite medium. Her face-painting and body art has been published in many different formats, including the I Love Bodyart website, London Girls website, Illusion magazine, SkinMarkz magazine, Tattooed Timebomb and Pinstriping and Kustom Graphics magazine, to name a few. 2018 saw Sarah take part in the The World Bodypaint Festival t placing 5th in the Airbrush Category her aim in 2019 is to take top spot.
We asked Sarah who her who inspired her to do the amazing things she dose she replied There are many incredible artists that are inspiring for different reasons: Wolf Reicherter (Wolf's Bodymagic) was possibly the first to catch my eye. It was his UV images that inspired my continuing love affair with blacklight. The colours are so vibrant, painting in this medium gives me a massive emotional lift. It's as if they resonate positive energy Dutch Bihary also inspires me greatly, his knowledge of human anatomy, illustrative prowess and technical skill is something I never tire of seeing. His work hits a chord because of my own illustrative background, I think. His artworks are so clean and crisp, they're a joy to look at (and digest). I'm also greatly inspired by another incredible body-artist, Josh Counsel, (Badass Bodyart).
I remember seeing a pair of brown leather trousers he'd painted on another artist and being astounded that they were just paint! From that point I had to follow his work - again, his technical skill blows me away. His eye for detail, his accuracy alongside his outstanding skills in prop/costume making and prosthetics has me fascinated very time. To see what the future holds for Sarah keep an eye on her social media pages. www.facebook.com/sarahloucreations, www.facebook.com/sssbodyartist, thepaintsmith.co.uk www.instagram.com/sarah_scarer_smith
