Greetings Tigers, Welcome to the official TSU Recreation and Wellness Center’s Newsletter, your one stop shop to all things recreation! This has definitely been one of the most life changing fall semesters I have ever experienced during my time here as both alum and as an employee. As we all know change is inevitable and very much needed to help us grow and become the person(s) we are all meant to be. When change occurs so abruptly it allows us to stop and reflect on what truly matters and what no longer serves a purpose. Here at the Recreation Center safety is our number one priority and the safety of our members take precedence over everything else. We want you to enjoy your time here and participate in everything we have to offer, but in order to do that there must be rules and regulations to follow. One rule in particular I would like to drill is that all members present their ID’s every time you access the facility. Your TSU ID is your identity on campus. It plays an important role for you as you frequent the various facilities on campus. Do not let anyone outside of yourself utilize your ID; that is a University violation and if violated you will be subject to the confiscation of your id card and summoned to the office of Judicial Affairs. To ensure all who enters the facility are indeed current students the Recreation Center is a “Zero Tolerance” zone as it relates to illegal ID usage. On a lighter note, the Rec. department hosted a variety of activities and programs for the months of September and October that will be highlighted in this month’s issue. Some of those highlights include the following: *TSU Annual Health and Wellness Fair *Nutrition Article: “What and What not to Eat” * REC. Member Spot Light *Exercise of the Month * REC support October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month * See if you made the REC Sports highlights and how you can participate in upcoming events * Finally the REC pays Tribute to our angel Ms. Nicole “Mouse” Zimmerman Once again welcome to THE REC!! And remember Fitness is not just Exercise it’s a Lifestyle… Are you living? In Health,

The burpee works the legs, arms, chest, back, abs, and glutes. It is a phenomenal full body movement because you get cardiovascular training, strength training, improved core strength, flexibility and balance. Perform the Standard Burpee as a high-intensity interval exercise for 30 seconds at maximum intensity (go “all out), recover for 4 minutes, then repeated the session up to three times. Step 1: From a standing position squat down and put your palms flat on the ground.

Kimbler Lofton an office administrator for the Department of Research who’s worked at Texas Southern University for twenty-eight years. She admits that she has been one of the biggest fans of the Recreation Center since it opened in 2002. “I’ve had a membership with the rec since it opened” Lofton stated. Her primary reason for to join the rec was the accessibility of the facility. With her office being only a few steps from the REC, it was a no-brainer decision for her to enroll and become a member. “I’ve lost weight and gained a little bit of muscle” showing off her guns of steel, “I most definitely recommended the rec to other staff members whenever I get the chance.” Ms. Lofton’s favorite activities include running on the treadmill and the Group Exercise boot camp classes that held on Mondays and Wednesdays that are taught by Mr. Erik Lege, the fitness center manager. The weekly boot camp classes allow her to interact with coworkers while burning calories and having fun doing so. Lofton is consistent with her workout routine and it has a lot to do with the encouragement she gets from the fitness center staff.
“I never miss a week” states Lofton. Her bubbly, upbeat personality is hard to miss at the Recreation Center.
