ROBMACHINEWISE

Words: Cobbs & Castillo Photography: Cobbs & Castillo

For some odd reason when I think of Utah, I think of that HBO show "Big Love". A modern day Utah polygamist who lives in Salt Lake City. To every guy, this sounds great. Three hot wives that cook, clean and...you get the picture. What's this have to do with Rob Wise; nothing. But you have to admit that when you hear Utah, religion is the first thing that comes to mind. Over the past couple of years, the Utah bmx scene has grown into this cult-like following out of 50/50 bike shop. Now every time I see Utah and bmx in the same sentence I make sure I watch a little closer. All the guys are innovative and have the style and flow to back it up. When I first met Rob, I knew he was a one bad turkey on the bmx but didn't really know too much about him personally. I remember picking him up at LAX and the whole way back I drilled him on the Utah scene, the polygamist lifestyle and whether or not he is allowed to drink caffeine. To say the least, Rob didn't really portray the Utah stereotype as well as I was expecting. He lives a normal life just like the rest of us. Doesn't have three wives, no clean house and he's just as crazy as any other young bmxer out there. Whenever he's not portraying the Machine on his bike, he's shooting guns and getting into the usual mischief. - Castillo

BASICALLY EVERY TRICK KNOWN TO MAN I thought Rob would be stoked to ride this huge tranny wall spot 10ft away from this man hole thing. But after sessioning the bank to tranny Rob went to work on this dirt lip to man hole. Personally I didn’t think it looked like anything until Rob started to get into it. Once Rob is into something he basically does every trick known to man on it. Turndown, invert and this big downside whip went down within 30 min. - Castillo

HIS FRONT WHEEL MUST HAVE BEEN BRUSHING THE CEILING When we got to this spot, Rob almost immediately, started trying this ice fakie. The sketchiest thing about it was that the space between the railing and the roof was about 6 longer than the bike itself. I think he tried it two times before pulling it perfect and if you notice his back wheel is easily six inches over the rail so his front wheel must have been brushing the ceiling. - Cobbs

HOW CAN YOU NOT USE THIS We all know that this spot has been done up more then any other wallride out there but we went there to just check it out and have some fun. Rob was just practicing his euro airs out of the wallride and I captured this one and thought it looked sick. - Castillo

ROB STEPPED IT UP AND 180’D THE WHOLE DAMN WALL This was “the ultimate warm up spot” ‘til Rob stepped it up and 180’d the whole damn wall. Sometimes you just wanna cry seeing things like this. I honestly thought he’d try and ice it or something along those lines. His first couple attempts weren’t even close and the third one he cleared by a mile. What’s even weirder about this is that the bank is a pile. It’s a bank that rolls really bad in the middle with no lip or anything. Damn ROB! - Castillo

ROBMACHINEWISE TO FIND A GOOD LINE WAS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE This spot is so much harder to ride than it looks. There is about a thousand pounds of shaped concrete in-between this pocket air gap. To find a good line was almost impossible. The way Rob ended up hitting this gap, you would have never guessed there were any issues. - Cobbs

One of the things that Jason is really good at is knowing what is current and what he wants from one of his bikes. Jason works at a bike shop and sees frames all day long and scrutinizes the littlest things. Jason incorporated the best of the best all rolled into one on his new "Ends" frame. Jason's new frame features our T3 heat-treated process, integrated head tube, smaller 5mm dropouts, removable brake bosses and his favorite feature is the laser-cut dollar sign. Make money money, make money money! Ends Top Tube Length: 20.6”, 20.75” & 21.25” Chainstay Length: 13.75” Headtube Angle:74.5º B.B.: Mid T3 Heat-Treated Process Weight: 5 lbs. 3 oz. I’ve never met someone that represents their hometown more than Biz. This frame is a tribute to Boston. 781 was Biz’s suburban Boston area code where he grew up in MA. Biz felt that after riders take off the stickers, you can’t tell what frame the rider is riding since they all look so similar. This year, Biz really wanted a frame that stands out amongst the others on the market so he incorporated the Boston Red Sox ‘B’ and Volume’s speaker head tube cut-outs. 781 Top Tube Length: 20.75” & 21” Chainstay Length: 13.75” Headtube Angle: 75º B.B.: Mid T3 Heat-Treated Process Weight: 5 lbs. 0 oz. First Blood

With “Rambo” being Rob’s favorite movie, it’s no surprise that the First Blood was inspired both by the movie and Rob’s interest to shoot guns. He wanted something that is light, strong, and has a story behind it. The holes in the seat tube resemble a silencer on one of Rob’s guns. Whether you ride with your brakes on the seatstay, chainstay or no brakes at all; the First Blood will get the job done. This frame is definitely Rob’s killing machine. We originally introduced the Sledgehammer 3 yrs. ago with the sole purpose of giving those older guys something to cruise around on. Whether it be to your local liquor barn or just cruisin’ the streets jumping curbs, we wanted a sense of nostalgia. Back in the early 80’s, 26” bikes were the “It” bike for O.M. racers (old men ABA class). A decade later, the only cruisers we could find were smaller 24” bikes that were aimed for teens. Our ultimate goal was to reintroduce the 26” cruisers of the 80’s with today’s standards. With pros and industry gurus such as Edwin Delarosa, Joe Rich, Stew Johnson, Jeff Zielinski, Greg Walsh, Keith Romanowski, Jason Enns, Launchpad and many more riding one, why wouldn’t you?

Creedence Fixie

After riding the Cutter fixed gear bike we came to the conclusion that we wanted something a little more for our style (BMX) of riding which is definitely not the norm for your everyday fixed gear bike. We still jumped the Cutter and did the usual tricks but it wasn’t feeling too comfortable for that type of riding. We added straight bars and an all new fork to allow them to spin 360º and still have clearance for a cyclocross tire. The Creedence, named after the CCR classic rock band, is synonymous with this bike. Rock N Roll! Whatever your choice of terrain may be, this bike can handle it.

Frame: 100% 4130 CR-MO. Sizes: 52/55/58 / Fork: Full 4130 CR-MO. CUTTER F&F

The Cutter was our original fixed gear complete bike that was available last year. 100% 4130 CR-MO, seemless/ double butted and heat-treated tubing. Same great tubing and strength as any of our bmx frames and is also backed with our lifetime warranty (frame only). We felt that the frame geometry didn’t need any refining but we made some changes to the fork with less rake to allow all you fixed gear stylers to spin the bars. If you always tinkered with the idea of trying tricks and jumping curb-cuts on your fixie, look no further than the Cutter frame and fork.

HANDLEBARS

Made from our T3 heat-treating CR-MO for a reduced weight and added strength. 1-pc machined steerer tube. 4mm thick dropouts. Both come with 6061 AL preload bolt. Being the strongest forks on the market we backed them both with a full lifetime warranty.

ANTHONY BOY FLORES VS MANUEL E CANTERO Whenever you think of great duos you may think of Batman & Robin, Cheech & Chong, Beevis & Butthead, and now we can add Boy & E-man into the mix. These two are far more of a dynamic duo than their counterparts before them based on their dependence on the other to complete a thought, finish a sentence, etc. When they aren’t around each other they are like batteries without the full charge and when they come within a 10 ft. radius of each other, they spring to life. They complete each other like identical twins minus the fact that they don’t look anything alike.

BOY ON E-M MAN

Boy: I remember back in school your folder had magazine pictures of your favorite riders (right next to your Brad Pitt shirtless pics). Who were those riders and what pics were they doing? E: It was Edwin Delarosa doing a 180 bar, Brian Castillo downside whip Volume ad, Van Homan no footed can can, Josh Stricker tabletop off the wallride, and Vic Ayala double to crooked on a kinked rail. I had em cause those were some of my favorite riders at the time and I never had pics of Brad Pitt shirtless just Brad Pitt. Ha-ha! Jk! Boy: Who are your favorite riders these days and do you still have pictures of Brad Pitt shirtless? E: The Brad Pitt pics were never there but I think I actually had a few porn pics stashed behind the riding pics! I wasn't the only one. Some of my favorite riders these days are Edwin Delarosa, Kurtis Elwell, Vinnie Sammon, Eddie Cleveland, and Jason Enns to name a few. Also people I ride with like you (Boy), Barney, Nate M. and all the L.A. homies. Now don't get all excited cause I named you. Ha-ha.

Boy: What is one of your most craziest memorable stories of us partying? E: Too many! One that comes to my mind right now would be that crazy Halloween party we went to in L.A. Shit was poppin! Girls, drinks, friends, everything! It was all gravy up until we got the gun pulled out on us outside the party by those guys from 18th St. Grimey life! Boy: There’s many rumors that you ride for other clothing companies like Lavar, True City, Mexico and etc. Can you clear things up and state who your real clothing sponsors are? E: Well Mike Ardelean hooks it up with Lavar clothes still to this day and True City flopped so that's done. I only really ride for this clothing company called Cerbae. They got the fly shit from head to toe! Shit is official, check out www.cerbae.com for proof. Oh yeah and Mexico too, I've been riding for them since day 1!

Boy: Since you grew up in a fairly grimey neighborhood, what do you think about people that are fake and play roles like they are from hood? E: Well I really don't care about them, just the fact that they are wanksta's trying to be in the hood. You see a lot of those around here. They’re gay and they'll never do shit by themselves just when they’re with their homies. Boy: Have you ever been jacked before, for anything, not just a bike? E: I've never been jacked for a bike but my friend actually got jacked for my bike in Compton. Shit got taken from his car! I have also been jacked at gun point for a Cincinnati fitted hat coming out of some house party. Couldn't do anything about that, I wasn't strapped that day.... Ha-ha.

( 29 )

Boy: Have you ever posted anything of yourself up on youtube? E: Nope, I wouldn't even know how to do that first of all.

Boy: Is there any type of girl you want but have not had yet? E: Huge ass, Asian, white, midget, etc. Well not a midget for sure! But I’m down with any to tell you the truth. Latin women though, damn!! They got it all! Ass, legs, breasts, face, hair. They’re the best in my opinion.

Boy: Why do you wear a shoelace as a belt? E: Cause every belt I've had sucked balls! From my Standard belt to my Little Devil belt back in the day to my DC belt now. They all suck and tear! They always rip on me or the belt buckle busts after a minute. Now I've been wearing a shoelace, shit hangs and lasts forever! Boy: If you went to Mexico on a vacation, will you be able to come back? E: Yes fool! I got my passport and Green Card so I should be legit to come in and out of the country now. Boy: Are green cards really green? E: Nah, they ain't but my passport is! Ha-ha

Boy: Lately we’ve been filming and you’ve been filming me a lot. Do you see yourself in the future maybe doing it as a profession? E: Well big thanks to Glenn PP. for lending us the ultimate camera for so long! We wouldn't be doing this without him but nah I don't see myself doing it as a profession. First: ‘cause I don't own a camera. Second: I don't know how to edit. Third: I don't own a dope ass computer and finally: ‘cause I only really know the basics. It would be awesome though to do it as a profession, like the ultimate filmer Glenn PP. He’s be traveling the whole world and shit just filming. Maybe if Brian buys a dope ass camera for Volume that I can use.... One day. Ha-ha.

Boy: You recently got a bumping system in your ride. What CD’s are you bumping right now? E: Yeah, I got King Kong in the trunk! As of now I've been bumping Gorilla Zoe, Juelz Santana, my iPod and of course a shit load of Young Jeezy. Yeaaaaaah! Boy: Have you ever been five finger slapped by a girl? E: Yeah like once or twice but I fought back!

Boy: How many times a day do you log into myspace? E: At least once a day. I gots fan mail to answer, you know how that goes!

Boy: What style of riders are you tired of seeing? E: Sketchy ass mo-fo’s and all the Internet kids trying to ride like someone they ain't. All those people taking their brakes off too. I don't really care ‘cause there's some people that can pull it off but all the other ones are just following the trend, which is gay!

I GOT MY PASSPORT AND GREEN CARD, SO I SHOULD BE LEGIT TO COME IN AND OUT OF THE COUNTRY NOW

E-man with his best Pancho impression from Stand and Deliver

BOY ASKS E MAN CONT. Boy: Do bad Internet comments about you get to you at all? Meaning do they get you mad and drive you to do donuts in yo ride? E: Nah, not at all. I mean I got a big fan base so you know, j/k, but nah they don't, people could talk and hate all they want--that just makes me better.

Boy: Why are your t-shirts so big and what made you go up in size instead of down like most people that ride bikes? E: IDK. 2X tall tees feel bomb. I use to wear mediums and larges when I was smaller but had to step up my game. Must keep my gear fresh, ya dig!

Boy: Is your favorite movie still The Hills Have Eyes? If not what is? E: Yep, The Hills Have Eyes is the ultimate movie! Shit is so dope. That movie is amazing and is still my favorite.

Boy: Do you think Volume is doing an overall good job with their company? E: Yeah I think so. I mean they got a dope ass team and are expanding their line of products. So yeah! My signature grips are out soon and hopefully the Trap bars too... ha-ha! Another team video wouldn't hurt and more trips.

Boy: Any shout outs or special thanks? E: Yeah shout out to my family, my girl, you (Boy), all the people I ride with. Big thanks to Brian Castillo for everything! Glenn PP., Nate Moroshan, Jeff Z., Jeremy Pavia, Ed Subias, Joey Cobbs, Nate at Cerbae, Edwin Delarosa, Rich Hirsch, Meron, Barney, fuck, shit can go forever ha-ha. Thanks to anybody that has helped me out in any way and everybody that's down with me, appreciate it!

E: What are your favorite types of girls? For example thick, thin, tall, short, white, brown and etc.? Boy: I like them all, except fat chicks! Sorry fat chicks! E-man will take you! If I had to choose I’d say short, brown and a big ass.

E: Remember when you told me that you got socked out as a kid for talkin shit to some other kids from your window? How did it feel to talk out your ass, then just stand there and take hits like a punching bag and not do anything back? Boy: Yeah that happened, ha-ha. I was like in 4th grade and the dude was in 9th or higher! I was playing on a swing and the guy started talking shit to me for a reason I don’t remember. So I started talking shit back ‘cause I had a big mouth. Well the dude disappeared so I kept playing. The dude kept on me and said something, so I turned around and when I did that he punched my lights! 2 punches! Shit I was small so I was floating. When I looked back up, the guy was pretty much gone walking back into his house! So I started talking some more shit but he didn’t turn back. To tell you the truth he was way bigger than me. I didn’t want him to turn back.

I LIKE THEM ALL, EXCEPT FAT CHICKS! SORRY FAT CHICKS, E-MAN WILL TAKE YOU.

E: What is your favorite type of food? Boy: Junk food

E: If you could have anybody’s riding skills who's would they be? Boy: Wtf? This is the gayest question ever! Umm, Jamie Bestwick. ‘Cause he’s dope!

E: Why don't you ever use lotion on your ankles? Boy: I do put lotion on my ankles bitch! But my ankles absorb that shit like water in the desert. Ha-ha E: How do you get that massive bunnyhop you got? Boy: I work out by picking up fat chicks! lol E: Who is the hottest celebrity in your eyes? Boy: Stacey Dash! That lil’ bitch Tila Tequilla, too. E: Why do you like Jack in the Box so much? Boy: I don’t know. It’s the ultimate!

E: Why do you deny all those biker kids that send you friend requests on myspace? Boy: I don’t! I add them then like a week later I delete them. Ha-ha, sorry E: What is your favorite trick to do? Boy: Tricks are for kids. Nah. Um, feeble hard 180'

BOY AND E-MAN

These two have to be lumped as one. They are completely different when they are not together. The one time they got separated on the trip, Boy instantly fell asleep in Joey's truck and E sat in the back of the van with his iPod, looking like somebody just stole his puppy. When these two are together its constant laughter. They seem to have a language that only they understand and everything they say is the funniest thing they ever heard. I think for the next trip we'll have to pool together and get these guys a laptop of their own. Don't expect to get much sleep, Internet time or privacy (ask Ed about that) if you’re sharing a room with these two. How these guys function on so little sleep and a diet of nothing except Weinerschnitzle and Jacks is beyond me but they do it better than anybody else. You'd have to be made of stone to not be smiling when around these two.

ROB WISE:

This trip was the first time most of the team, including myself had ever met Rob. Rob was the quietest out of everybody on the trip, as I would be in a van full of people I had never met. Although Rob was quiet, his riding was an assault on the streets of S.F. Often enough, the first one asleep and the last to wake up, Rob seemed baffled by some of the team’s late night activities and sunrise awakenings with no effect on their energy levels. Rob seemed to attract some of SF's weirdest weirdo’s for reasons unknown to him but very entertaining for everybody else.

BIZ

Biz is a road trip machine! While most people will do better at a spot after being there once or twice and figuring out what they want to do, Biz is the total opposite. If he can roll up on a spot he's never seen or been to, with no expectations he'll come through with a crazy line or photo every time. Biz is a fountain of insightful, yet completely useless information. I finally figured out why as I watched him read 1,001 useless facts on his Sidekick on the way back from our 7-hour drive home. I'm sure if there was a surgery where your hand was cut off and replaced with a Sidekick, Biz would be first in line.

JASON ENNS:

This was my first trip as T.M. This trip was a little different from what I’m used to because it wasn’t just about riding. From the driving duties to having to update the site to getting rooms and making sure everybody was happy and fed. It was a bit stressful at times. I didn’t get as much riding done as I would have liked, but I guess that's to be expected when you’re looking out for a big group. Everybody seemed to have fun on the trip and I didn't roll the van on the steep streets of S.F., so I guess I can say I think I did a good job for my first trip as TM.

( 43 )

SKINNY:

I had never ridden wtih or even met Skinny before we picked him up at S.F. airport. That night I noticed that he posses a trait a lot of us would like to have. That would be the ability to get intoxicated off of one drink, be it a beer or Grande Margarita. Skinny's a good guy to have around on the road, he's always happy and smiling, even after he got hit in a drive-by shooting on his first night. Also he would have to be voted best-dressed team member at any given moment of the trip.

Lighter, faster, stronger and less expensive. This is the goal for every parts company out there today. BMX parts are in the most competetive place more than ever right now. Which is great. It makes everyone step up their game to compete with each other. This year we focused more on quality and consistency with all of our products. We’ve added a few new products and refined some of the older ones in our catalog. It’s a great feeling when the team backs every product in our catalog of parts.

Money: No explanation needed for this one. Not a big fan of being homeless!

Camera: I’ve been on so many trips and didn’t bring my camera and I always regretted it. Now I make sure I have one on every trip!

Airplanes: I love to travel and without airlines I couldn’t go anywhere around the world. Driving cross-country sucks. Airplanes make going places a whole lot easier.

Internet: Best invention ever! You can watch fat people fall on youtube or you can get directions to anywhere you need to go within minutes.

Bed: I love my bed more than anything. When I get home from a trip it’s the best to be able to sleep in my own bed.

Television: I like watching TV way too much. I love watching reality TV and how people do some of the stuff they do in front of millions of people.

Car: Takes me anywhere I need to be, period. If you don’t own one of these in California you’re pretty much useless.

3. Bike: My bike brings me good times and has taken me all over the world. I met so many good friends ‘cause of it. It would just suck not having one anymore.

iPod: I pretty much need music when I ride now. It gives me motivation to do stuff that scares me. Cell phone: If I don’t have my phone with me I feel lost. Just makes life a whole lot easier. Before cell phones it sucked doing anything, it was so hard to get in touch with people.

I had been wanting to ride the Battle Bowl for quite some time, so when Brian asked if I wanted to shoot there I jumped on the opportunity. There was a giant puddle in the center of the bowl which made it hard to get speed for the jersey barrier-esque tranny that someone was nice enough to build. We swept aside the broken glass, empty spray cans, and used condoms and proceeded to shoot. I probably shot this table four or five times. I asked Brian how they were looking and he said, "In this one you look like Brian Foster". d Captions: Chris Doyle Images: Castillo

I'll be honest, I was a little bit let down by this gap. At first glance I thought this was gonna be at least a five trick spot, my mind ran wild with thoughts of all the jumping tricks that would be possible here. Much to my dismay, it wasn't that good; mellow tranny, up-hill runway, and a bad run-out. I hit this three times and was over it, you get what you get.¨d

If you haven't noticed, I do a lot of turndowns. I like this trick a lot (obviously); I love the way your body twists and the bike kicks out - especially in lookbacks. This is the one trick that I still hope to be doing when I'm an old man and hit weekend warrior status. d

When you go out street riding and you're filming and shooting photos you get your fair share of on-lookers. Most of the time, people are confused about adults on "little kid bikes" and a lot of times people want to see some carnage. On this day we had only one on-looker; an old man who was way more impressed with Brian's camera equipment than he was with the 6'3 lanky guy on the little BMX bike jumping over a handicap rail. I guess they see this stuff all the time in L.A. D

This is one of those tricks that either works first try or takes half-a-dozen tries. This was one of those "half-a-dozen" days. It was good for Brian though, he was able to shoot it from many different angles until I finally pulled it. ÂŹ

On Super Bowl sunday most middle-aged men are guzzling beer and eating wings in front of their TV's. Breaking from the norm, Brian and I decided to battle high winds and cold temps to session the infamous Chino wall. On a side note, I had to shoot this a couple of times because Brian's trigger finger was too cold. â€

I'd been sweating this gap for quite some time and I finally found the gall to do it. I jumped it two or three times before I decided to turndown it. On the first turndown attempt I pulled out of the bowl too far inside and ended up missing the entire tranny where I was supposed to be landing. I slammed on the ground so hard and my wrist and ankles were pissed. Brian came over to me and one of the first things he said to me was, "dude, you wrecked your cords". The second attempt was much better. ø

CURB DOGS! WORDS: CASTILLO PHOTOGRAPHY: SUBIAS / CASTILLO

It's as classic as the wheelie

( 79 )

My first memories of riding; actual riding was going down the street hitting curb cuts.

Going as high as possible or clearing the gaps of grass in-between the two curbs. Those were probably the most freeing and highlighted times of my childhood. Being able to come home from school, get on my bike and jump curbs with my friends from the neighborhood. We practiced our jumps on the curbs and pushed each other in a game of horse to see who could claim the title of Best Bike Rider for that week. It's as classic as the wheelie contest we had on a daily basis. The stepping stone of the curb is always in the back of my mind, especially being a street rider. To this day, I'm sure every rider still hits curbs and has a smile on their face when they go extra high or far just like when they were kids. I look at curbs now as something to hit from point A to point B but never really tried to push to see what I can actually do off of one.

The other day I came across the famous photo of Vic Murphy doing a table one footer off a curb. A truely amazing photo at the time. I remember being amazed at it since some of us couldn’t do that trick (1 footer flatie) off a proper jump and here this dude was doing it off a foot high curb-cut! While trying to come up with a couple of unique articles for this year’s Gypsy we came up with the same concept that Vic was going for. Ultimately, to see what we can do off a curb and hopefully push the envelope as far as what can be done off the things you see everyday and take for granted. Sometimes what you have is better than you think and it might be right in front of your house.

NOISE

: Noise can block, distort, or change the meaning of a message in both human and electronic communication. In many of these areas, the special case of thermal noise arises, which sets a fundamental lower limit to what can be measured or signaled and is related to basic physical processes at the molecular level described by well-established thermodynamics considerations, some of which are expressible by relatively well known simple formula. What this means is beyond us but it sounded good for a title.

JOEY COBBS....

External Hard Drive

Most of us know Joey as a rider and photographer but most of us don’t know the degree of how good his riding and photography has gotten over the past couple of years. I didn’t even know how good he has gotten till he sent over this batch of pics for this article. Last I heard, Joey was interning under a well known photographer in the San Jose area shooting dog food adverts. Some photographers shoot what’s around them and what’s convenient in their surroundings. Joey is the workhorse that will buy a costume and create a scene that fits what he was imagining days beforehand. Joey creates the shot not the scene creating the shot. I guess that’s what separates good photographers from great photographers.
