CELEBRATING & BUILDING OUR RESTAURANT SCENE
You can be a part of the return of Restaurant Week , featuring nearly 50 restaurants, Sept. 20-29
Restaurant culture is a crucial component of the value of a community. It impacts the lives and experiences of the people who live there, it affects visitors’ interest in spending time there, and it makes up an important piece of the community’s overall economic and cultural success. So it’s critical we as a community give credence and support to the sustainability and growth of our restaurant scene. That includes supporting the scene’s financial success as well as its ability to find additional cuisines and restaurant models that can succeed here and create a stronger, more diverse culinary culture. That comes through experimentation on the part of the restaurants and entrepreneurs, through open-mindedness and curiosity on the part of the dining public, and through spreading the word to friends and family about what’s new, what’s good, and what you want to see more of.
With that celebration in mind, nearly 50 visionary restaurants in Eau Claire, Menomonie, and Chippewa Falls have signed on for the third year of Restaurant Week, offering special menus and deals with the hopes that you’ll come out to support their endeavors and celebrate their hard-working staffs. You’ll find each restaurant’s offers in the back of this guide. I’ll just say there’s some pretty tasty-sounding stuff back there. You can also read about a handful of special events and prizes you can win for participating (including a trip for two to
Mexico). Public reviews from the first two years of Restaurant Week told us the event has already become an annual tradition for diners across the Chippewa Valley. So whether you took part in previous years or not, now’s your chance to get out there and experience something new.
Along with Volume One, our sponsors help support the restaurant scene of the entire region through its involvement in Restaurant Week. Check out all the businesses and entities involved this year below, creating a truly community-fueled event supporting the restaurants taking part and the diners who will benefit from the offers and events.
Restaurant Week is about celebrating the great restaurants we have and the amazing culinary and service talent that runs them. It’s about inspiring what might come next. It’s about getting outside your usual routine to find the participating restaurants you haven’t yet visited, or trying a dish that might push your boundaries. But it’s also about enjoying the classic comforts of your tried-and-true favorites. In whatever way works for you, use this event to vote for the future you want for our restaurant scene. Check out the list of restaurants who stepped up to take part and take these 10 days to visit all your favorites, discover some new ones, and send the message that you’re ready for our restaurant scene to thrive. –Nick

EAT LOCAL, WIN A TRIP TO LAS VEGAS
Fill your Passport at 10 restaurants in 60 days to qualify for big prizes
The only thing better than going out to eat with friends is going out to eat while earning a chance to win a trip for two to sunny Las Vegas, which includes air fare and a three-night stay at the MGM Grand! That’s exactly the opportunity before you during Restaurant Week and beyond as we launch the Dining Passport Program with help from our prize sponsors. There’s $5,000 worth of prizes up for grabs – the most we’ve ever given out during Chippewa Valley Restaurant Week.
How do you enter to win? Simply stop in to eat at any of the nearly 50 participating restaurants during Restaurant Week (listed in the back of this guide) and pick up your passport, which you can only get during Restaurant Week. After that, you have until Nov. 20, 2019 (60 days) to visit 10 different participat-
ing establishments and have them stamp or sign your passport proving you visited. If you can’t make it to all 10, no worries, because if you make it to at least five, there’s tons of prizes to be won as well. Five-stamp prizes include a private tour for eight courtesy of Chippewa Valley Food Tours, a lavish spa package from The Sakura Clinic, $1,000 in gift cards from Eat Street, a year membership courtesy of Gold’s Gym, and over $600 in gift cards to local restaurants. High fives all around. Completed (or half-completed) passports must be mailed or turned in to Volume One, 205 N. Dewey St., Eau Claire, WI 54701, by Nov. 20, and the winner will be randomly selected on Friday, Nov. 22. Additional details are printed on the passport itself. So go out, eat good, and win big!
WIN PART OF $250 IN GIFT CARDS, JUST POST YOUR PHOTOS
Every day of Restaurant Week you have a chance to win a $25 gift card to a participating restaurant. All you need to do is take and post photos of your experiences at a participating Restaurant Week establishment, tagging each one with #cvrestaurantweek so we can see it and randomly pick a daily winner. The more you post the better chance you have to win. Winners will be chosen from both Facebook and Instagram. You could post shots of your food, your drinks, your amazing server, or the scene overall. Just tag it (and if you can, the restaurant, too) and you can win. Easy, fun, tasty.

EXPLORE AREA FARMS FIRST HAND & ENJOY A COUNTRYSIDE LUNCH
Saturday, Sept. 28 • 9am-3pm • Leaves from The Local Store • $40 • VolumeOneTickets.org
This four-stop, easygoing tour of the Chippewa Falls area will take participants on a relaxing bus ride through the countryside amid a rainbow of autumn foliage. Enjoy samples, sightseeing, or shopping at every location, starting at Farm Sweet Farm. Here, guests will be able to meet cows, calves, chickens, horses, dogs, or even a cute little bunny and hear the history of the Flashinski farm. The next stop is Autumn Harvest Winery & Orchard, where you’ll hop aboard a wagon ride to the orchard. Pick a half peck of your own apples to take home, and then peruse the winery selection and even sample a few sweet local flavors. When everyone’s had a chance to rest and refuel, we’ll move on to Harvest Moon Organics, a certified organic farm and home of the Old
Laughing Lady General Store, which stocks local meat, cheese, canned and pickled goods, coffee, and more. They’ll have meat samples for snacking, and host a fun wagon ride, weather permitting. The final stop is Blaeser Farms, a Chippewa Falls beef farm that raises high-quality meats. A walking tour will take visitors through pristine pasture where they can view (and maybe even pet!) gorgeous Highland cows and hear Josh and Amy Blaeser’s hilarious and educational stories. Tour participants will be able to purchase Blaeser meats with a 10% discount during their visit. The tour leaves from The Local Store, 205 N. Dewey St., Eau Claire, at 9am. When purchasing your ticket, you’ll have the option to select a pack lunch preference (vegan, gluten free, meat, vegetarian, or standard), and indicate any additional dietary considerations. OFFERING MEALS FOR THOSE IN NEED
Kickoff event will raise funds for the Community Table
Celebrating the thriving culture and burgeoning variety of Chippewa Valley restaurants comes with a responsibility to remember that not all of the people in our community have consistent, reliable access to food – it also comes with the opportunity to do something about it. One out of nine people in west-central Wisconsin is food insecure, meaning that they don’t know when their next meal will be or where it will come from. That’s why when you purchase ticket to the First Taste Culinary Crawl event, Restaurant Week’s kick-off event on Sept. 19, a portion of the ticket sales will go toward The Community Table.
The Chippewa Valley Community Table has been serving the region by
offering a free, no-questions-asked meal to anyone who needs it for 26 years. The organization is driven by community donations as well as the hard work of more than 3,500 volunteers of all ages and backgrounds who are drawn together to help ensure their neighbors don’t go hungry.
Since Executive Director Michelle Koehn came on at the end of 2017, the Community Table has doubled down on fundraising, grant writing, and outreach efforts. Much of the emphasis has been on outreach to young people through educational programs and activities. They are designed to be hands-on and fun, creating a positive association between the Community Table, food, and children’s daily lives.

• WEDNESDAY LUNCH 11:30AM-1PM
• THURSDAY LUNCH 11:30AM-1PM
• FRIDAY DINNER 5-6:15PM
• SATURDAY LUNCH 11:30AM-1PM
• SUNDAY DINNER 3-4PM
The ultimate goal is to encourage kids to not merely identify needs in the community but to take part in solving them, Koehn said. Last year, the Community Table provided about 7,000 meals and snacks to young people, a sharp increase from 2017.
And over the summer and again this fall, Community Table is partnering with Workforce Resource, a Menomoniebased nonprofit, to offer job training to
young adults in the state’s FoodShare program. The grant-funded program provides work experience, mentorship, and education, and so far it has helped most participants earn their food safety certificates, which can help them land jobs in the restaurant industry.
Overall last year, the Community Table used 50,000 pounds of food to provide more than 45,000 meals to Chippewa Vallians. In fact, thanks to an emphasis on environmental impact –including preserving and transforming fresh produce by making smoothies and dehydrating vegetables – the Community Table served more meals and yet produced 20,000 fewer pounds of food waste than the year before.
The Community Table is always looking for volunteers to make all this happen: Seven to 12 volunteers are needed to serve each day’s meal. Financial donations are also welcome, as they provide the organization with the flexibility to prioritize and address their needs. “We don’t take a dollar for granted,” Koehn said.
For more information about the Community Table, including how to donate, and how to sign up to volunteer, visit their website: www.thecommunitytable.org.

“STRANGEWAYS BRITISH BITTER” BREWERY NONIC
Strangeways British Bitter is indicative of Brewery Nønic’s style and philosophy of brewing. Golden-orange in color, this sessionable and balanced beer has a slight hop bitterness from low-alpha, new world hops and a bright and biscuity malt character. Served at cellar temperature and on authentic British hand pumped cask pulls to create a creamy mouthfeel and head. Serving by this method is much more labor intensive and time consuming but brings subtle nuances of the beer to the front that are normally masked by serving on standard tap faucets.
