Giving in times of disaster In order to provide the best assistance to survivors and impacted areas: 1. Do not self-deploy as a volunteer. Local resources to support you will be limited. 2. Follow instructions provided by local authorities — which may be ever-changing. 3. Send money, not material goods — every disaster, every survivor has unique needs. 4. Give locally — local nonprofits are more familiar with local needs and resources. 5. Volunteer locally to obtain training and prepare to serve. 6. Think long-term. Recovery continues long after the TV cameras and media leave. In order to learn more about giving wisely in times of disaster, visit nvoad.org.
