Mundaka Buenos dias todos, It was a tough go for everyone in Mundaka this year as the waves didn’t show up to the event, much to contest director and VZ’s own Mike Parsons dismay. We had a great VZ presence with athletes, online and at the site with a lot of shades being worn in the crowd. VZ surfers in the event included: Parko, Taj, Kerzy, Tiago, Hodei Collazo (wild card/local ripper), Damian Farenfort (Wild Card/Saffa ruler), Ruben Ash (wild card/Brit stuntman), Dean Bowen (wild card/Aussie charger)..
Parko came into the event with the number one ranking and a string of average results due to a bunk ankle and bowed out with a =17th and is now sitting second, 48 points behind a surging Mick Fanning..
Taj was our highest placing athlete in the event, eventually going down to Kelly Slater in the Quarters

PARKO - Championship Watch!! The World Title Race is going to come down to the final event @ Pipeline this year as Parko gets an equal 3rd in Portugal and Mick Fanning wins!! A mere 368 points separate the two ASP frontrunners heading into Hawaii, making for the most exciting title race in years.. Taj Burrow was our next best finisher (=9th), followed by Tiago (=33rd) and Kerzy, who didn’t surf due to a bunk ankle as well (must be contagious, make sure you wash you hands or get a shot)

SILVANA LIMA MAKES IT TWO IN A ROW! VZ wave warrior, Silvana Lima clinched her second world tour victory over the weekend at the Commonwealth Beachley Classic in Sydney, Australia. This is Silvana’s second win in a row this year and her second win against the current world tour leader. She’s sitting in 2nd on the ratings and if she can keep her momentum up, VZ could be on it’s way to a one-two punch on the ASP Tour this year!

The Cosmic Creek For the 10th Anniversary of the Cosmic Creek, the stars aligned with all of the key elements of the universe culminating in an interplanetary surf, art and music festival that took place over the 1st weekend of October. The celebration took orbit on Friday night with Donavon Frankenreiter playing a 5-song in-store set @ Hobie Laguna Beach to prime the jets for the coming weekend. The surf contest started bright and early Saturday morning , with the cosmic surf riders competing on vintage surfboards from the 70’s and 80’s. There were six divisions in the event from the VZ spacegrems to the Cosmic Pros, all competing in the form and style suitable to the era and the equipment they had to ride. When the landing gears were lowered and all the heats were surfed over the two day competition, the cosmonauts had the stoke equal to that of the first moonwalk. As a brief but much needed modification from the flight path, Saturday night was spent at Seven Degrees, an art gallery in Laguna Beach, that played host to an art festival and concert by Diamond Donny. The gallery showing featured Diamond Donny’s signature Guitars and Ukulele’s “customized” by some incredible artists as well as limited edition prints from Larry “Flame” Moore’s archive. All of the art was on offer for silent auction with all of the proceeds benefiting local water based charities. The astral plane was melted when Donavon took stage to a sold out crowd playing a nonstop sing-a-long to a sold out house of happy of humanoids. By all accounts of the space log, the reentry into atmosphere was a success of milky way proportions, $25000 was raised, Yadin Nicol narrowly defeated Tom Curren in the Cosmic Pro final and walked with $2000 and the order of the galaxy remains intact with an eye to next year’s launch.

Downtown Throw Down Seattle was host to the 4th Annual Downtown Throw Down over the weekend. VZ Snow heads Pat Milberry and Nick Visconti showed up and dropped some hammers on the course. Zumiez Manager’s Retreat
Time to dust off your coconuts, strap on your grass skirt, and get ready to hula ‘till the night closes in! The VZ crew packed up the Aloha spirit and sent the Tiki Gods to the island of Zumiez for snow clinic mastery with a sloppy side of hula! It was once again time for the Zumiez gang to get up to speed on VZ product, and once again the sound barrier was shattered with VonZipper 101! 450 store managers showed up for a hands on clinic on their snow and eyewear product, and were left with a wealth of knowledge, a wet whistle, and if they played their cards right may have even been laid!! Needless to say the Aloha Spirit was in full effect, the suds were splashing, and the Tiki Boys took home the Golden Tiki Torch at the end of the night with the best exhibit and clinic of the show! Pass the Poi… Mahalo!!

Rockstar Energy Drink US Open The annual US Open of SX took place over the weekend in sin city at the MGM Grand Arena. This year’s event featured a new format, with a point going to the fastest qualifier, every rider who won their head-to-head race, and the rider whose mechanic won the wrench race, where the mechanics raced to see who could change a back wheel quickest. VonZipper’s Wil Hahn had no luck but bad luck in Vegas this year. To start the night Wil Hahn got James Stewart in the head to head race, then couldn’t get a start in the heat race. Hahn moved onto the LCQ were he hit the deck hard in the first turn dislocating his elbow. Get Better Wilbur! In the Alpinestars 85cc Mini Invitational VonZipper had 3 groms qualify from Loretta Lynn’s and make the trip to Las Vegas. #7 Nick Gaines on a Team Green Kawasaki from Georgia, #10 Keith Tucker on Yamaha from North Carolina, and #13 Brandon Leith on KTM from Utah. On Friday night Keith Tucker ripped the holeshot and was one of the only kids to jump the huge finish line gap. Tucker went on to finish 4th on Friday night and 4th overall for the weekend. Nick Gaines had some tuff luck crashing out on Friday after a 5th place start. VZ’s #13 Brandon Leith closed the weekend out strong finishing 5th on Saturday night. Congrats to boys on a solid year!!!

MISS DIRT DAYS: WE HAVE A WINNER! The 2009 Dirt Days festival has come and gone, but its influence lives on. This year, Meagan took home the title of Miss Dirt Days after competing against a bunch of other hotties in the Dirt Days Model Search presented by Von Zipper. Along with the prize pack from Von Zipper, and the bragging rights of course, Meagan has earned a poster photoshoot for an upcoming issue of TransWorld Motocross. Congrats Meagan!
