MARIAH CAREY I

’m walking through downtown Manhattan and into the smart Meatpacking District, en route for my meeting with one of the world’s biggest singing stars. This historic quarter (once a thriving river-side port) had deteriorated by the late 70s, becoming an insalubrious no-go area. But in the next twenty years or so, it rose again to become one of New York’s most fashionable and stylish neighbourhoods, replete with high-end boutiques and trendy eateries. Now, in one of the areas most luxurious hotels, in a suite overlooking a serene and glittering Hudson River, global superstar, Mariah Carey, has spent the best part of a humid autumn day giving back-to-back interviews to promote her sultry new album: Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel. In many ways, this little corner of Manhattan seems like an apt location for my meeting with the singer; it’s almost like a geographical metaphor. Mariah, too, has risen above her own humble beginnings to become the biggest-selling female artist of all time (200 million record sales worldwide and counting) as well as the recipient of numerous music awards, including five Grammys. And let’s not forget that Carey is also the acknowledged possessor of one of the most remarkable voices in music – an alto with a fiveoctave range. So amongst all this, it’s easy to over-look Mariah’s songwriting and producing skills, although she’s been doing both since her teens, and that includes working on the material for nearly all her albums, including her debut in 1990. With the release of Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel, however, reviewers are finally beginning to take notice. Carey co-wrote and coproduced all the tracks on the album (bar one) working with the creative production team of Christopher “Tricky” Stewart and The-Dream. In fact Billboard magazine, flagging up Mariah’s way with words, has described the album as “refreshing and much welcomed.” The album’s first single, Obsessed, has already given the star (now celebrating twenty years in music) her 27th top ten hit in the US. Not bad for the girl from Long Island who would sit at

her school desk, dreaming of musical success. The reality, by now, must surely have outstripped those girlish dreams. Now, making my way up to the hotel’s Penthouse Suite where Carey is meeting the press - I’m keen to know the singer’s thoughts on this eagerly-anticipated album, and how she views her over-all success. When I arrive, the hotel door is flung open by a smiling management assistant. “Hi! Come in,” she says, showing me to a seat. “Mariah will be with you in a few minutes, she’s just finishing another interview.” Right on cue Carey bounds through the door and shakes me warmly by the hand. Dressed simply but elegantly in expensive black trousers and a figure-hugging shirt, her signature tawny curls cascade in ringlets over her shoulders. And although Carey might be 39 this year, she has the enviable, dewy complexion of someone at least a decade younger. Momentarily I’m caught off-guard, too, by her simple, unaffected demeanour. “Let’s sit where it’s more comfortable,” she says, gesturing towards the sofa and waiting patiently while I set up my recorder. Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel is Carey’s twelfth studio album, and, perhaps, her most personal and ‘autobiographical’. Overall, the feel is R&B hip-hop with quite a few heart-wrenching slow ballads that show-case Mariah’s impressive vocal range. Is she happy with its reception so far? “Very happy,” says the singer. “Actually, on the way here today, two policemen pulled my car over to tell me that they love my version of I Want To Know What Love Is (the second single from the album). “I thought that was kind of cool.” Plaudits from the music press and the NYPD. That can’t be bad. The theme of the album – love at all its stages – is one that is close to Mariah’s heart. “Like 7

We are very proud to introduce one of the world’s best-selling female artists, Mariah Carey. November has been a crazy time for this stunning superstar. Not only has she launched her much anticipated new album, we’ve seen the launch of her new fragrance too, not to mention appearing on the X Factor, and turning the lights on at Westfield shopping centre! Mariah still managed to open the doors to us at NOIR Magazine. In this interview she reminds us just why we love her so much.

most girls, I’ve had my ups and my downs in love,” she says. “A lot of the songs reflect specific, different times in my life, actual events that happened to me; some of them are way back in the past. In some ways this album was kind of healing for me because I was able to build humour – and some sarcasm – into the lyrics. I mean, if you listen to a song like

Up Out My Face – it’s a joke, but there’s also a truth in what I’m saying.” One track definitely without sarcasm, though, is The Impossible dedicated to her husband of nineteen months, Nick Cannon. She married the actor, rapper, millionaire and current host of America’s Got Talent after a whirlwind two-month courtship. You rescued my love/ You did the impossible, she sings on that track. Did she know right away that he was The One? “Pretty much,” answers the star. “The first time we sat down together we connected on a sort of spiritual level – we really did. You know, it’s impossible not to like Nick – he’s one of life’s good

guys. And there’s no competition between us either,” she reflects. “He just totally supports me.” Except when it comes to her diet perhaps. “I’m trying to lose a few pounds on this bleak pak choi diet, but Nick is still eating ice-cream and candy!” she wails.

noir december 2009

Diet or not, Mariah Carey seems to be in pretty good shape. Slim and impossibly glamorous though she is, her fans might be somewhat surprised at the singer’s transformation in the up-coming film Precious, in which she plays the small, but hard-hitting part of Ms Weiss, a drab social worker. Carey underwent a complete ‘make-under’ for the part, enduring lank hair, dark under-eye circles and a dowdy wardrobe that left her virtually unrecognisable - even to close friends. “So many people have said to me: ‘were you really in that movie? We kept waiting for you to come on screen’”, remembers the singer. “I just looked so unlike me. Of course, usually on stage I’m made up and glamorous, but I just had to let all that go. For acting I’m willing to do anything to make a role authentic, and I really am proud of what I achieved in Precious.” As well she might be. When the film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, it won both the Audience Award as well as the Grand Jury Prize for best drama, with one reviewer calling Mariah’s performance “pitch perfect.” The role also earned the singer a 15 minute standing ovation at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Little wonder then

remember at school, when I was 12, the teacher asked the class what we wanted to be when we left. Everyone kind of said basic jobs, except me. I said: ‘An entertainer!’ and the teacher was like: ‘Oh come on – that’s not going to happen!” It did, of course, and before Carey was hardly out of her teens. But global celebrity can come with a high price attached - not least the relentless press scrutiny which feeds the appetite of a ravenous world. Does she ever wish her fame would go away? “No, not really,” says Mariah, who will also be launching her newest perfume line – Forever – early next year. “I really love what I do, although sometimes things are written which can be a bit hurtful – especially on the internet. Mostly, though, I can shake off anything that isn’t true, and just concentrate on the music.” Another thing Carey likes to concentrate on are her philanthropic causes. In fact her work - mostly with youth-related charities - has earned the star a Congressional Horizon Award. Carey is co-founder of ‘Camp Mariah’ (part of The Fresh Air Fund) which enables innercity adolescents to explore educational and career opportunities while enjoying camping adventures outside the city. She’s also a keen supporter of the Make-a-Wish Foundation, a charity that grants the wishes of children who have life-threatening illnesses. Over the years, Carey has had some well-documented ups and downs – both in her personal and professional life. Now, though, that there’s growing speculation in Hollywood that Carey – who stepped everything seems to have fallen nicely into place. Fulfilled in her into Helen Mirren’s shoes at the last minute to play the role - could grab personal life and with a stellar twenty year career to look back the Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Mostly, though, on, she’s also beginning to enjoy success in her acting ambitions. Mariah just seems pleased that her hard work and determination has Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel just might be the icing on two very finally paid off. successful decades. “I’ve been doing independent films that people don’t really know Mariah Carey has been at the top of her profession for twenty about and learning my trade that way,” says the singer, who received good notices for her part as tough-talking waitress, Raychel, years. CHRISTMAS TIPS

Decorating your home at Christmas time is something which may leave you stuck for ideas each year, especially when we’re all looking to create something stylish without breaking the bank. Everyone has their own idea of how Christmas interiors should look. Some opt for traditional decorations collected over many decades; others use decorations made by their children. The urge to buy everything a shop has on offer is sometimes overwhelming – be strong, resist! I really believe, often ‘less is more’. This Christmas I suggest opting for elegance rather than abundance.

COLOURS

There isn’t one particular colour scheme de jour this Christmas instead any colour goes. From purple, which has been on the Christmas radar for a few seasons now, to orange and an array of metallics. Bright colours are also in vogue, so you really have carte blanche to create whatever you like – just make sure the colours look good together, please don’t use all of them! One of my favourite styles this year is doing what would normally make interior designers shriek in horror – combining silver and gold! It looks luxurious and creates an elegant and glamorous look and is something which I never thought I would admit to liking, but the

PEARLY PRESENTS

All Christmas Decorations available from Linea at House of Fraser’

colours do work really well together. The icy look of silver accessories contrast with the warmth of gold accessories to set a tone of refined elegance. You could utilise both jumbo and varying smaller sized baubles on your tree, in both gold and silver, to create a funky yet opulent look. Be careful to make sure it’s not too overwhelming though, especially if you have your tree in a smaller room; it’s important to make sure everything is in proportion. A stylish Christmas with maximum impact and minimum fuss is key. DECOR

The first thing your festive visitors see is your front door, so make sure you welcome them in style. Keep colours

simple and instead of a traditional wreath use cream and green hydrangeas with cream roses and plenty of greenery, complete with sleek ribbon and pearls. Have a look in your local pound store for some cost effective touches! I always believe that minimalism is the key when it comes to Christmas table settings. Avoid fussy accessories. Instead focus on dinnerware which is both practical and alluring and keep the use of colours to a minimal. Use Crisp white tablecloths, which work well with any décor and to add a little something, sprinkle silver confetti or small pearls on top of your set table for a touch of luxury.

Use brown paper or coloured purple crepe paper to make your presents stand out. Instead of using bows use small pearl decorations to add a touch of class. The simplest of gift wrappings can be glamorised with a single opulent decoration. Fill a large vase with baubles and fairy lights to add maximum style with minimal fuss. For those looking to soothe their eco conscience this Christmas time by minimising the use of lights, place candles in empty glass jars with glass beads. It’s also worth sparing a thought to what will happen to your tree after Christmas. A staggering 500,000 forest trees are cut down each year for decoration, so it would pay to check if your tree can be re-planted afterwards, if not, find out if your council can take it away to use for chipping in local parks and playgrounds. Something else to bear in mind is that once it’s all over you can take your Christmas cards to WH Smith, Marks and Spencer and TK Maxx to be recycled. All of the money raised goes to help The Woodland Trust plant thousands of trees. I wish you all a very happy and stylish Christmas! ANALEENA IN TRUE NOIR STYLE OF KEEPING YOU UP TO DATE WITH THE LATEST HAPPENINGS IN THE FASHION WORLD, EACH MONTH WE WILL BE GIVING YOU A TASTE OF A STYLIST’S LIFE BY INTRODUCING YOU TO SOME OF THE BEST TALENT THE FASHION INDUSTRY HAS TO OFFER. THIS MONTH THE SPOTLIGHT IS ON THE DESIGNER BEHIND THE £8,000 BAGS THAT SOLD OUT IN HARRODS WITHIN 2 WEEKS!

T

he first collection from the luxury accessories label, Analeena, has gone down a storm. Within only two weeks of launching exclusively at Harrods there’s now a waiting list, with those in the know eagerly awaiting the next procession of these super luxe gems to arrive from Italy. Not bad for a collection ranging between £3,000 and £8,000, but an Analeena bag is special, not just any bag, these are like beautiful pieces of jewellery that should be treasured and handed down. Lina Hamed is the designer behind this sell-out collection. From an early age her flair for fashion and design did not go unnoticed. Her mother would frequently find large holes in her clothes where Lina used to make dresses for her dolls, needless to say her mother started to buy her material. At the age of 21 she was already a buyer for the legendary Hermes in London as well as assisting them with design projects. Lina holds Hermes dear to her heart, “Hermes

taught me something very important about luxury, never compromise, stick to high standards whatever it takes. That’s why I buy my skins from them now, and everything is made in the finest ateliers in Florence.” So we come to the birth of Analeena. Sitting in Hermes with a friend, trying to order a bag, going through the leather book, touching skins and looking at the colours , but not quite finding what she was looking for, Lina realised that her passion could take her in a new direction. Lina’s innovative designs, combining different skins in an array of colours, her mini torch and bag hanger and her beautifully designed buckle of the calla lilly (which signifies magnificent beauty) embedded with an evil eye to ward off jealousy are some of the many reasons why Analeena is more than just another bag. Analeena is pure luxury. Classic but with a twist of youth. Timeless yet young. Chic and sexy. Harrods who normally never take on the first collection from a designer have now

put in their next order after just two weeks. Lina Hamed is certainly one to watch. The prices for Analeena’s bags range between £1,500-£8,000. To view the collection and stockist information please visit: www.analeena.com

HAVE CHRISTMAS ALL

WRAPPED UP It’s time to pull out that all-important little black dress

EVERY MONTH, DR SIDDIQI (MBBS(LONDON), MRCGP, DFFP)) OUR RESIDENT EXPERT WILL BE GIVING YOU SOME INVALUABLE ADVICE ON ALL OF THE LATEST ‘MUST HAVE’ TREATMENTS AND DISCUSS SOME OF THE LATEST ADVANCES IN THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY.

C

hristmas is here again and that means party time: for those women who don’t have an extra ounce of fat stop reading now - for the rest of us it means trying to squeeze one more year out of (or should I say one more year into) our favourite dresses. Unfortunately, most of those party outfits tend to be figure-hugging items, which are never as forgiving as we would wish them to be. So other than instant liposuction what can we do to help smooth out those lumps and bumps but wont involve us having to suffer any pain. The most rewarding and long lasting way, would be to start a simple healthy eating and exercise plan, however by the time you are reading this the office party is probably only a few days away not giving much time to drop those extra pounds. Crash dieting should never be an option

since it puts the body under so much strain and more often than not results in rebound weight gain. The celebrity cheat that many of the stars use to appear more svelte is the contour body wrap. The first thing to mention is that it is not a substitute to eating healthily and exercising but is a way for the body to eliminate toxins in the body and toning up the skin and muscles. By using special mineral clay it has been proven in studies to promote a genuine inch loss from the whole body, which remains for at least 30 days, and can be prolonged if the wraps are used regularly. The most significant point with these wraps is that it is not due to dehydration so, by drinking water will not put the weight or the inches back on in fact taking in plenty of fluids is positively encouraged. The other main advantage with these wraps

WHO IT IS GOOD FOR • Anyone needing a boost to help lose weight. • Anyone looking for a treatment to help give the body a slimmer appearance for a special day such as brides. • Anyone suffering certain conditions such as psoriasis and eczema. • Especially good for mums who have just given birth and are looking to help tone up those bellies and reduces those inevitable stretch marks.

is the way it leaves the skin feeling much more toned less cellulite appearance and positively smooth and silky. The process involves being wrapped in clay soaked bandages before being manoeuvred into a special tracksuit, which allows the body to stay warm. The combination of the special mineral clay and the special wrapping technique encourages the lymphatic drainage system to help eliminate the toxins. After relaxing with a facial the client is then unwrapped and measurements taken. A SEASON TO BE JOLLY The New Ice Age team of experts have come together to help you prepare an impressive and delicious three course Christmas spread using a variety of nutritional foods.

Sautéed Scallops and Tiger Prawns Sautéed Scallops and Tiger Prawns with Warm Salad of Artichokes, Fine Beans, Chorizo and New Potatoes. Light Coriander, Lime and Chilli Dressing. 12 large king frozen scallops 8/10 frozen tiger prawns 1 red onion 1 tub of marinated artichokes (8 halves approx) Frozen green beans approx 200g 150/200g of chorizo 8 new potatoes (cooked and halved) Frozen coriander (1bunch/bag) 2 large chillies with their seeds removed (the small ones are too spicy!) 1 bag of rocket to garnish

✻ Defrost the green beans and artichoke halves.

✻ Boil the new potatoes until nearly cooked through and then refresh under cold water to arrest the cooking process. ✻ Heat a frying pan with olive oil, halve the potatoes and fry until they become golden, add the artichokes and green beans and some finely sliced red onion. ✻ Scallops are fried in a very hot pan with a little oil to ‘caramelise’, prawns are added, seasoned with sea salt and black pepper. ✻ Mix together and dress the plate with rocket leaves to serve. Ensure the scallops and prawns are spread out. Dress with chopped coriander, finely sliced chilli, garlic puree and olive oil.

Traditional Christmas meal with all the trimmings Traditional Roasted Turkey Crown with Savoy Cabbage, Roast Potatoes (in Dripping) and Parsnips, Buttered Green Beans, Pigs in Blankets, Yorkshire Puddings, Cranberry Jelly, Bread Sauce and Real Gravy. 1 frozen turkey crown (with skin) 1 bag of frozen roast potatoes 1 bag green beans 1 cabbage 8 chipolatas and 8 slices of bacon (Veggie sausages and veggie bacon available as a yummy alternative!) 1 bunch of chives 1 bag of parsnips 1 bag of carrots 1 bag of cranberries 1 bag of breadcrumbs or 5 slices of bread

1 jar of cranberry jelly 1 pack of frozen Yorkshire puddings

✻ Pull the turkey out of the freezer the night before to ensure that it is completely defrosted the whole way through. ✻ For the bread sauce: Push cloves into onions and infuse with milk for one hour. Remove the onion and add breadcrumbs to thicken. ✻ For the turkey stuffing, warm the butter but do not melt and mix with garlic and

chives. This mixture is then stuffed between the skin and the meat of the turkey crown. To do this, make a slit in the skin and carefully pull back. ✻ The crown is then roasted for 45/55 minutes depending on the weight (see pack) at 180°C or Gas Mark 6 and rested for ten minutes. ✻ After 10/15 minutes of roasting add the pigs in blankets and the roast potatoes and parsnips as these usually take about 30 minutes. ✻ Shred cabbage and add 50g of butter and cook over low gas for 30 minutes until soft. ✻ At the same time as the cabbage, put the carrots on a low heat, also for 30 minutes. ✻ Ten minutes before serving (when the Turkey has been in for 40/45 minutes) bring a pan of salted water to the boil and add the beans, cook for 3/ 4 minutes until slightly tender. ✻ Add the Yorkshire Puddings as these take about 5 minutes to warm up. ✻ Leave the turkey till last to serve to keep it resting for 10 minutes. Serve and enjoy! 31

Stewed Autumn Fruits, Honey and Cinnamon Tuiles, Clotted Cream Ice Cream 1 bag of frozen stewed autumn fruits 1 litre of ice cream 1 jar (approx 200g) of honey 2 cinnamon sticks 1 pack of star anise 100g caster sugar 100g butter 100g cups powdered sugar 55g honey 200g flour 4 egg whites

✻ The frozen fruits can be put straight into a pan with 20ml water and the caster sugar/ spices. Stew over low heat for 45 minutes until softened into a compote consistency. ✻ For the tuiles: In a bowl or stand mixer, cream together the butter, sugar and honey. Add flour and mix to combine then slowly drizzle in egg whites while mixing on low speed until fully incorporated. ✻ Make tuiles on a silpat (a silicone baking matt) using an offset spatula and spreading batter very thinly. These may be made either using a

NOIR december 2009

template or done freeform. ✻ Place tray in oven and bake at 175°C for 7 to 10 minutes or until golden brown. ✻ To mould into shapes easily, remove tray halfway through baking and separate each tuile from the silpat, by running an offset spatula underneath. Return to oven to c ontinue baking. ✻ When finished, mould into desired shape, working quickly. If the tuiles cool, return them to the oven to warm until pliable again. It helps to work near the oven, leaving the tray inside with the door open. ✻ To serve, pour a helping of fruits onto a plate, add a scoop of ice cream and a tuile. Add a star anise for decoration.

Delicious Frozen Hangover Smoothies Sometimes it’s easy to forget about diets and calorie intake, and get stuck into the food and drink. And, just occasionally, why not? But - if waking up with a fuzzy head - there’s no need to worry... The New Ice Age nutritionist, Yvonne Bishop-Weston, has constructed two smoothies to give a boost of the essential vitamins and minerals needed to get back on form fast! Both smoothies are made from items that can be pulled straight from the freezer.

RED RELIEF 8 floz pomegranate juice (antioxidants) 1 tablespoon sliced frozen carrots 1 tablespoon frozen redcurrants 2 shots of mangosteen* 1 tablespoon of ground almonds 1 tablespoon of flax oil* The red nutrients in this smoothie - particularly in the mangosteen - help provide antioxidants to support the liver and the immune system, helping to prevent post-party colds and infections. The almonds provide protein to help to make this smoothie glycaemically balanced, so it doesn’t just pick you up temporarily, but releases its power slowly…great for people trying to lose weight!

GREEN GOODNESS 8 floz apple juice ½ avocado (for body and vitamins E & B) 1 tablespoon frozen blueberries (antioxidants) 1 tablespoon frozen spinach (B vitamins and minerals) 1 cube frozen parsley ½ tsp frozen grated ginger 1 tsp of algae*, if available (brainfood, amino acids) 1 tablespoon of hemp oil* (Omega 3 brain food, essential fats) A splash of lime This is a delicious way to help replenish lost nutrients! The fruit sugars help pick up blood sugar lows and prevent or lessen hangover, headache and low energy levels. The avocado and hemp oil provide good fats and vitamin E to help skin re-gain its sparkle, while spinach is great for vitamins A and C that are needed for detoxification. Ginger helps relieve nausea and boosts the immune system. Algae is a true super-food as it is packed with a broad range of highly absorbable vitamins and minerals. Dress the smoothies with red fruit (pomegranate or red pepper) or green (kiwi or apple), and feel the energy levels charge. For more information and recipes please visit www.theNewIceAge.com

A dAy IN the lIfe Of

ANNA MOORe With the run up to Christmas, Bluewater’s very own personal stylist is very busy with clients wanting a new winter wardrobe or just a killer outfit for the office party! NOIR have an exclusive have a behind the scenes look at a typical day in her hectic schedule…

am Wardrobe Weeding appointment

Visiting my client at home this morning to sort through her winter wardrobe. This is one of the favourite parts of my job. We tend to wear only 20% of our wardrobe and I love the possibility of finding treasure in the wardrobe! Today I found an amazing red dress in her wardrobe that had been bought to wear for a wedding but she had only worn once. I put a purple polo neck underneath it and teamed it with opaque tights and knee high boots and it looked great. A new daytime look was born.

NOIR december 2009

We then found a wide patent belt and fitted jacket, which would look great for work. At the end of the session I made a shopping list for essential items to maximise her existing wardrobe.

11

am client profiling/ prepping for client later in the day

I head to Bluewater armed with my client’s profile. She is 29 and looking for an outfit for an interview. She wants to look smart yet fashionable. She already has some fabulous shoes to wear so I choose mainly dresses for her to try.

12

pm clients appointment

During the appointment we try all the dresses I selected from 3 different stores, but we go back to the first one and it looked amazing on

Christmas Fashion Advice Just in case you haven’t got time to see Anna for your own personal styling appointment, she has given us some helpful hints about this festive seasons ‘Must Have’ the little Black dress and some stylish suggestions to suit everyone. Women’s Body Shapes are broadly defined into six categories. Anna advises the trick to dressing stylishly is to know your body shape and wear clothes which work to accentuate your best attributes. If you are a pear shape and you have narrow shoulders, a small bust and waist with bottom heavy hips and thighs, Anna advises to keep the bottom half simple. Draw attention up with frills & details . AVOID Full skirts which will add bulk.

3

PM GIFT VOUCHER PREP & APPOINTMENT

Prep for a gift voucher appointment- the gift was for a lovely mother-in-law on her 50th birthday that has lost her way with fashion. I choose some shops she is unfamiliar with and some new colours too. Her daughter-in-law comes too and they both love the personal shopping experience. She said it was “a steep learning

curve for me and very exciting!” We found a shop she loved where the clothes fitted brilliantly and she spent the whole budget there!

5

PM BEAUTY MAKEOVER

I took my client to Bobbi Brown at House of Fraser to have a make-up lesson, brilliant for giving ideas for new colours and ways of applying make-up particularly if you are stuck in a rut. caring and I have never experienced anything like it.”

“I always loved music from when I was little, and I have to say that Michael Jackson was my inspiration. I went on a talent show in Australia, which I won, and I was offered a recording contract live on air, and things went from there.”

What careers do you think your children might choose and What do you hope for them? “I don’t mind what my children do, as long as they’re happy. If they want to go into an industry like this, then that’s fine, but I will tell

them all the pitfalls.” What are the significant events in your life?

“My children being born – amazing.” you have achieved fame tWice in your life. hoW does it differ this time?

“It means more this time. It’s deeper; you appreciate it so much more. People are so

you have a very close family and are seen as a role model to fathers. hoW do you feel about that?

“If other fathers see me as a role model, thanks, I am honoured and humbled. Family is the most important thing to me. I speak to my Mum and Dad (in Australia) every day.

TELL ME ABOUT THE NEW ALBUM AND SINGLE…

“My new single is Unconditional. It was a song that I wrote about Harvey, and it is so very precious and personal to me. It’s a song for all parents and step-parents; it’s about the unconditional love that you have for your children.”

And I talk to my brothers and sister (all in Australia also) every other day – so I believe in family being close.”

TELL ME ABOUT YOUR STYLE OF MUSIC, INSPIRATIONS FOR SONG WRITING, ANY INTERESTING STORIES BEHIND CERTAIN SONGS…

WHAT ARE THE HIGHLIGHTS OF YOUR CAREER?

“The album is deeply personal. Some people write books; I wrote an album. If you listen to the words you’ll understand.”

“Performing at Wembley Arena – it was something I dreamed about all my life, and when I got to do it was a dream come true.” WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS TIME?

“As long as my children, family, friends and myself are healthy and happy, I don’t mind.” DID YOU ACTUALLY ENJOY YOUR JUNGLE EXPERIENCE AND HOW DID IT FEEL TO FIND OUT ABOUT CHRIS MOYLES’ CAMPAIGN TO

WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO COLLABORATE WITH – SINGERS, PRODUCERS, ETC. – AND WHY?

“Maybe in the future. We did discuss it for this album, but it was important for me to do this on my own. I funded the whole project and, as I have already said, it is a deeply personal album, so it was important for me to do this my way.”

YOU HAVE BEEN OVER TO MARBELLA THIS SUMMER. WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT IT?

“I was fortunate to go to Marbella, but only for three days. It was beautiful though. I took Junior and Princess with me; unfortunately Harvey couldn’t come – but the other two had a great time. We had an amazing villa, so that’s where we spent our time. That way I could spend loads of quality time with the children. WHICH CELEBRITIES WOULD YOU LIKE TO MEET, DEAD OR ALIVE?

“Michael Jackson. I am fortunate enough to know other members of the Jackson family; however, I never got to meet Michael, and I would have loved to. WHO HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE CELEBRITY THAT YOU HAVE MET?

“I can’t say one or the other; most celebrities you meet are really nice. There are one or two who aren’t, but they don’t last long in this industry; the public work it out. Most people are genuine and appreciate what they do, and how lucky they are.” WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME?

“I spend as much time with my children as possible. They are everything to me.”

BY NICOLA McGEORGE

GET MYSTERIOUS GIRL RE-RELEASED?

“I loved my time in the jungle; it makes you realise that if you’re hungry enough you can do anything. I hate spiders but we were all so hungry, myself included, that I crawled through them; they were all over me, but I did, and we ate a good meal that night. I met some very interesting people in there, including Jonny Rotten. He was a real character; however, he didn’t clean his teeth for the whole time. Then I came out and Chris Moyles was campaigning to get Mysterious Girl re-released, which he did, and I have to thank him so much for that; he has always supported me well.”

“I know I’m really proud of it and it went in at number one, which is great! I was involved with all the planning of the design of the box and bottle, the smell and the name. We decided to call it Unconditional as that is the name of my latest single as well. It is so that people can buy it for those they love unconditionally or someone they have something to thank for, whether it be your mother, sister, teacher or carer.”

YOU ARE LOOKING IN GREAT SHAPE, BETTER THAN EVER…

“It was originally down to stress, but I am now sticking to a workout routine, which I do with my brother Mike, and that helps me stay in shape.” 41

NOIR JUNIOR

EMMA WATSON With Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince out on Blue-Ray and DVD this month, we caught up with the beautiful and talented Emma Watson!

PEOPLE FROM COMPANIES LIKE CHANEL?

WERE YOU HAPPY TO BE BACK ON THE HARRY POTTER FILM SET FOR HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE?

It’s amazing getting sent their dresses because I’ve always loved their clothing. They are the best. If anyone was going to dress me for a premiere, it was going to be Chanel. I physically don’t have time to go out any buy clothes for events so they lend me clothes and it works really well. I also consider it a perk that I get to travel and get to work with the people I’ve worked with. What other job would have given me all these opportunities?

I was quite keen to get back into the swing of it. Everyone was pleased to see me because it meant that things had really picked up. HOW TOUGH WAS IT TO HAVE YOUR CHARACTER START A ROMANCE ONSCREEN WITH RON, ESPECIALLY SINCE HE’S PLAYED BY AN OLD FRIEND?

I don’t know that it’s tough. Rupert’s a really laid back guy but I’m really looking forward to it because I quite like the romantic comedy side of it. Rupert and I end up providing light relief, as the films get darker. It’s funny seeing Rupert struggling in the romantic stakes. Hermione and Rupert are so different yet they have this chemistry, so it’s interesting. It’ll be awkward doing those love scenes; there’s no other way to put it, but its all part of the job. HOW GREAT DID IT FEEL TO WIN A BEST ACTRESS AWARD AT THE ITV MOVIE AWARDS?

It was so lovely. I genuinely didn’t expect to win it. It wasn’t just about Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. It was about all the films and I was delighted that the public had voted for that award. It’s one of my proudest moments. DOES WORKING ON A HARRY POTTER FILM FEEL DIFFERENT NOW THAT ALL THREE OF YOU HAVE DONE DIFFERENT PROJECTS?

Yes, and it was really nice to be able to come back and talk to Dan and Rupert about the projects they had been working on; and how different it was to work on stage and TV. It’s given us all more confidence as actors because we were chosen so young for the Potter films. It was so important to me to do Ballet Shoes. I learnt so much from that experience. THINK BACK TO THAT DAY IN THE BERKELEY HOTEL IN LONDON WHEN YOU WERE ALL PLAYING MONOPOLY AND

NOIR DECEMBER 2009

DO YOU KEEP A DIARY?

I do have early diaries filled with funny little things I said or thought. I also have memory boxes filled with things from the early films, including bits of the chess set. I have funny bits and pieces that they let us keep. MIGHT ALL OF THAT BE HELPFUL FOR AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY ONE DAY? YOU WERE ABOUT TO BE INTRODUCED TO THE WORLD’S PRESS. DID YOU HAVE ANY INKLING OF THE HUGE CHANGES IN YOUR LIFE THAT WERE ABOUT TO HAPPEN?

I think I was too young to realise that, though obviously I was terrified. I wasn’t thinking about J.K. Rowling writing seven books. I wasn’t doing the maths and I wasn’t thinking about the popularity of the series. Nobody had a clue that the film would become the most successful film franchise of all time. SO WHAT HAVE BEEN THE BIG ‘WOW!’ MOMENTS OVER THE YEARS?

No, I couldn’t see myself doing that. It’s too strange and weird looking back on that little girl. I’m very self-critical so I find it hard to watch the early films again. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was a film I was proud of, but I had to watch it three or four times before I could calm myself down and stay focused on my performance. WORD IS THAT YOU HAVE BEEN BANNED FROM PLAYING TABLE TENNIS BY TWO GUYS BECAUSE YOU’RE TOO GOOD?

Hahaha. I really hope they will let me play again because I really like it. I was quite a tomboy as a kid and played a lot of sport.

The first was when we were told we had got the parts and we stayed in a fancy hotel for the press conference. I remember sitting on a WHAT’S IN YOUR DRESSING ROOM HERE massive bed jumping around watching AT THE STUDIO? myself on the TV evening news. It Rupert has darts, pool, table tennis Harry Potter was mad. We also did a premiere and all these games consoles. at the Radio City Music Hall Dan’s room is full of books and The Half in New York and I remember and music. NEW YORK CITY

WHERE DREAMS ARE MADE OF

This festive season New York City is the place to be and this magical time of year is the perfect time to visit. Enjoy some of the world’s most stunning holiday decorations, events, and entertainment! With an endless list of things to enjoy in this wonderful city, here are just a few.

NOIR DECEMBER 2009

he Christmas holiday season officially kicks off when Santa Claus arrives on 34th Street during the 82nd annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on November 26 (www.macysparade. com). This year, the parade takes a new route as it brings its pomp and pageantry to millions of spectators. Beginning at 77th Street and Central Park West, marching south on Central Park West, it will turn east on Central Park South, instead of going down Broadway. When the procession reaches Central Park South and Seventh Avenue, it will turn south and go down Seventh Avenue to 42nd Street. It will then travel east on 42nd Street to Sixth Avenue (Avenue of the Americas), where it will turn south and march to 34th Street. At 34th Street, the parade will turn west and will end at Seventh Avenue. Macy’s Parade features a fantastic line-up of giant balloons including SpiderMan, floats, marching bands and the one and only Santa Claus. As the holiday season begins, swarms of shoppers, amazing window displays, and Christmas tree gawkers visit the city that never sleeps. From the end of November well into January, the city is dressed to impress. Hotels, restaurants, retail stores, arts and cultural attractions, and event venues offer something for every walk of visitor. New this year is The One of a Kind Show and Sale™ NY, which will take place December 11-13, with a preview night on December 10, at Pier 94 (12th Avenue at 55th Street). Being held in New York City for the first time, the four-day holiday shopping show will feature the best in fine art and fine craft from hundreds of unique artists, artisans and designers from across North America. Each item for sale at the show will be made by hand, one piece at a time, and every artist represented will be in attendance—offering shoppers the wonderful opportunity to buy pieces directly from the artist who created them. The show is open to the general public. Show and ticket information can be found at www.oneofakindshowny.com Now in its 77th year, the Radio City Christmas Spectacular is a must-see event in New York City. Until December 30, visitors will see snow fall, the glow of fireworks, and the Rockettes debut new numbers as part of this year’s spectacular celebration. Tickets range from $42 to $105. www.radiocitychristmas.com The WaMU Theater at Madison Square Garden will be the backdrop for Wintuk, a Cirque du Soleil production now in its third year in New York, which tells of the heartwarming winter tale of a boy’s quest for snow in a land called Wintuk. The show includes acrobatics, theatrical effects, and memorable songs. The show plays until January 3. Tickets are from $40 to $220. www.cirquedusoleil.com/wintuk Christmas in the Rockefeller Center is one of the most popular draws for holiday visitors from around the world. The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is a magnet for praise in a city filled with wonders. The annual event has drawn attention since its first appearance in 1933. This year, the tree illuminates on December 2 and will stay lit until January 7. Perusing the decorated storefront windows of major department stores is a favourite pastime for visitors descending upon New York City during the holiday

season. Bloomingdales, Bergdorf Goodman, Barneys, Saks Fifth Avenue, Lord & Taylor and Macy’s all get spruced up with beautiful themed windows that awe visitors year after year. New York City Ballet, located at Lincoln Center, will present one of the holiday season’s favourite productions, George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker™. The production will take place until January 3. This ballet is a magical experience filled with adorable children, marching toy soldiers, a glowing one-ton Christmas tree, mischievous mice, crystalline snowflakes, the Land of Sweets and some of the most glorious dancing the city has to offer. Whether it is a family tradition or a once-in-a-lifetime visit, this classic ballet is sure to please. Tickets range from $20 to $215. www.nycballet.com The Big Apple Circus celebrates its 32nd

Renowned Canadian director Michel Barette returns for his seventh collaboration with the Big Apple Circus. Tickets range from $28 to $66. www. bigapplecircus.org In Staten Island, Candelight Tours will take place on Saturday, December 12 and Saturday December 19.
