hen we decided to buy an apartment in 2006, my partner and I were looking for somewhere that met our requirements on location and size, together with a smart entertaining space, good proportions, easy to maintain and ‘close up’ when we go on holiday. We found a perfect new build property - well placed to access the motorway and rail systems, which was important to us both as we both travel a lot with our work that we felt was so easy to both maintain and leave unattended which could fit perfectly into our busy working lives. But, as with most new builds, it was somewhat characterless and therefore an interior design challenge! In buying off plan we were able to opt out of the standard finishes and invest in more substantial alternatives. In order to create an interior that suited our characters and tastes, my design team and I started the interior design by replacing all the interior doors from hollow core to hard wood framed with a relief mould detail. I completely redesigned the lighting throughout, replacing stark bright lights for discreet spots and wall lights and occasional lamps to create a subtle nighttime atmosphere. I am very passionate about excellent lighting design as this affects our lifestyle, mood and ultimate enjoyment of any space. As we live on the first floor, low level skirt lighting was also installed to guide

visitors from the front door up the darkened stairwell, as I wanted to create an enchanting entrance experience for visitors to experience. As you reach the top of the stairs the kitchen is the first room on your left with the Drawing Room straight ahead through a pair of double doors. So as to simplify the aesthetics of the hallway, and to reduce the number of doors, I created a concealed JIB door to the laundry cupboard. In the kitchen I designed a bespoke curved granite counter where we now spend most of our breakfasts and supper times. We also wall mounted an iMac computer which we use to control the home entertainment system throughout the apartment and also to watch TV & movies. The curve of the

counter allows the kitchen door to open freely while maximizing the surface area. While we acquired the kitchen units with the apartment, I chose heavily patterned wallpaper from Lewis & Wood to carry the colour of the units, limestone floor and granite worktops onto the walls. I often used random patterns such as this in small or complicated spaces to create an illusion of space. In the Drawing Room, I started by adding the chimneybreast and working fireplace together with bookcases either side to add smart detail and provide more storage space. French chairs and oversized oil paintings add to the over stuffed grandeur we wanted to achieve. We also managed to squeeze in

a dining table and six chairs in front of the bay window for times when we do entertain. When selecting colours for this room, I used heavy neutrals balanced with occasional vibrant colour. I also selected quirky fabrics, such as the Zoffany fabric on the bergere chairs and cushions from Chelsea Textiles, to add humour and focal points. For the compact master bedroom I designed the fitted wardrobes to make the best use of the space available. I also designed the centre section of the wardrobes to accommodate a slim line television by making the wardrobe doors retract back into the frame so as not to cause an obstruction into the room. Instead of opting for the usual bedside tables, I chose tall tower bookshelves

from Oka to frame the bed and create storage for books, pictures and the obligatory bedtime glass of water! Textured suede from Stereo was used on the walls and the bed was upholstered in a Zimmer & Rohde fabric to add depth and texture. The smaller of the two bedrooms was decorated as an occasional guest bedroom with a single day bed set length ways along the end of the room. We also use this room as a study and a small bureau in the corner when I choose to work from home or for catching up on correspondence. The bathroom has a wallpapered ceiling as well as the four walls, in a heavy Zoffany toile which matches the waterproof lined shower curtains to dispel any theory that bathrooms www.thimagazine.com | Traditional Homes & Interiors | 15

must either be purely functional or incredibly minimal. Bath times are now not just very relaxing but dramatically stylish and great fun! Overall, the emphasis was to create a ‘masculine’ apartment with some elegant classical touches creating an intimate atmosphere but, above all, a comfortable and welcoming home. We brought into the design some of our favourite pieces of furniture and art, that we have collected over the years, and from around the world. In addition to the new, we incorporated some antique pieces of furniture, which had been in the family for generations which only adds to the atmosphere and style making you forget your actually in a new build property entirely. We couldn’t live any where else. For further information: www.oliversteer.com

1)

What age is the house? (When was it built / bought /renovated?) Thought to have been oringinally built in 1630 approx. as a farmhouse. in 1800 the then owner of the Burton Bradstock estate (the Pitt-rivers family) carried out a substantial extension to include the double gable-ended eastern extension and the

northern extension. after acquiring the house in 2007 we completed a very comprehensive renovation and extension in 2011.

2)

What was the house used for previously? always a house but originally owned by Bradenstoke Priory near salisbury.

3)

What building materials were used? Did you use locally sourced stone/wood etc.?

The new extension was clad in local stone that was recycled from a collapsed dry stone wall in one of the paddocks. a number of original items were reclaimed from the the house and reused in the renovation such as the Belfast sink (laundry) and servant´s bell (kitchen).

4)

How many square metres is the building? House is circa 500 square metres with a further 200 sq metres of coach House and barns. Total site area of 7 acres approx.

5)

In what condition was the house when you purchased it? (Describe the interiors/out buildings/gardens etc.) The house was extremely basic. Only half of the building was centrally heated and there was no damp proofing. flagstone floors were laid directly onto earth and there were only two small bathrooms with no heating. The house was very poorly configured for modern family living due to the varied vintages of extensions constructed during the “servant” era.

6)

What was the purchase price? (Please do not feel obliged to offer this information if you don’t feel comfortable in doing so) guide price was £1.75m.

7)

How would you describe the exterior style of the house? Tudor manor house. rubble stone walls with stone mullion windows and doorways under a pitched slate roof.

8)

Are there any similar properties in the locality? Most of the local houses use the same rubble stone wall construction but the majority

are thatched cottages with wooden framed windows and doorways.

9)

How did you find the house? we spent a year renting cottages in various west dorset villages to try to find out what they were really like. Burton Bradstock

was our favourite due the combination of its stunning scenery, the large and lively community, its proximity to Bridport (Bull Hotel, market, independent shops plus waitrose and costa!) and village amenities (lively church, farm shops, pubs, PO, library, beach and Hive cafe!). we were told the house was coming to the market by a property agent and we managed

to arrange an early viewing. it turned out that the owner lived less than a mile from us in London and her weekend house guests were parents from our childrens´ school. we all had a lovely time and as we drove away along the cliff road and looked out across Lyme Bay we agreed that it would be our dream house. five years and two children later the project is finally finished!

10)

What made you fall in love with the house? The Burton Bradstock manor was originally owned by Bradenstoke Priory near salisbury (Bradstock is a derivation of Bradenstoke). Local legend had it that the monks of Bradenstoke used The Old Monastery as their seaside holiday home in years gone by. The house has a very peaceful monastic feel and is set amongst the most beautifully tranquil gardens that are dissected by a burbling mill stream. it is a haven of peace and spirituality.

11)

What style were you hoping to achieve when renovating/ decorating the property? we wanted to combine the very best of classical country house character and contemporary design and finishes. The place we felt best achieved this was Babington House in somerset. we persuaded simon Morray Jones, the original architect and designer behind Babington, to work with us to create a similar feel but with a seaside twist! The aim was a casual but contemporary country house luxury by the sea.

12)

When did you start the refurbishments? we spent 2008 and 2009 refining planning and listed building permissions. in 2010 we fixed the design and specification and went out to tender. we started the works on 4th January 2011.

13)

How long did the refurbishments take? we got practical completion of the works just in time for christmas 2011 and celebrated new year 2012 with a house full of our best friends and their families.

14)

Did you use local craftsmen? The architect & designer (simon Morray Jones), the quantity surveyor (cyril smith) and the structural engineer (Mann williams) are all based in Bath. The main contractor was castle Building and construction of Bridport, the joinery was done by Monkwood of yeovil, somerset and the stonemason was Luke grafton of Horton, somerset.

15)

Are there any ‘newsworthy’ facts about the property you can tell us? (ie- any infamous stories of the surrounding area/local folklore/celebrity visitors/any films shot nearby/any famous designers involved etc etc) in 1958 the entire village, including 1,700 acres of surrounding farm land, was auctioned off in three days by the Pitt-rivers estate.

so many people attended the sale that it had to be relocated from the women´s institute Hall to a marque on the playing fields. Most of the sitting tenants were able to buy their properties and The Old Monastery was bought for £5,000 by the tenant, dr JP ryan, who was the village doctor. we bought the house in 2007 from his daughter, Mary ryan. Local legend has it that there is an underground passage that links the church with the house that was used by the monks however we didn’t find any evidence of this during the building works!

16)

Are there any annual events nearby which we could use to help market your property? (ie- Music festivals/local carnivals/horse racing/ motorsports/galas/markets etc) 2012 sailing Olympics at weymouth, Bridport food festival. Burton Bradstock Musical festival. hen the owner of a traditional fisherman’s town house in Salcombe wanted to make their holiday home a place where they can accommodate their own family, as well as their friends, they turned to Pam Cox, from Ham Interiors of Henley, the designer of their

seven bedroomed Buckinghamshire family home, to help realise their dream. However there was one stipulation: it had to ready for Easter with beds made, fridge full of food, kids toys and books, everything ready for them to arrive for their holidays with just their clothes.

The brief was to create a stylish & practical holiday home suitable for four kids and a dog, with enough room to entertain guests for mum and dad and enough children’s beds to have sleepovers. Ideally an outside terrace area for BBQ’s / entertaining could be made from the rear outside space and an outdoor shower for sandy kids and pets (from the beach) before they get let loose into the house. Pam

was literally given the keys and left to get on with it. So building work began in earnest, including the dig down of three foot on the ground floor for improved ceiling height in the kitchen and dining areas and the digging out of what was the rear garden to get two much needed and valued central Salcombe car spaces. Although this meant losing nearly half

of the garden the acute shortage of parking space was much more of a priority and beside they were still going to have an outside deck for eating and entertaining which was more than enough. As it was moments from the estuary and beach Pam also had to ‘loose’

shed to create a loo, utility room, and storage for life jackets, key rack and waterproofs etc. Not surprisingly there were lots of challenges along the way, like we find with most refurbishments says Pam. Some challenges you only discover when you start

Salcombe Fishermans Cottage removing carpets or internal walls. As it was an old Victorian house on four storeys we knew we would come up against something but nothing is insurmountable. Everything was ripped out once structural engineers were consulted. One of the main issues was the head height on the lower ground kitchen and dining room which now opens up onto the BBQ area. So the floor was dug out three feet down to create much better head room for the kitchen and dining areas. Once this was done and the floor re-laid Pam added a wooden conservatory on the back, to let more light into the dining and kitchen areas. This huge family zone with three interconnecting spaces, all on one ground level now lead out onto the garden deck, with the car spaces tucked neatly below, out of sight reached by a few steps. The huge kitchen diner and family conservatory rooms are perfect all year round entertaining, as it’s not always sunny in Salcombe! Says Pam. For the colour and furniture she chose natural, hardwearing and a not too obvious nautical look with a bit of New York Hamptons style thrown in , as Pam has a great love of costal homes that includes her own. She also knew her client tastes, likes and dislikes having worked on

their main property so that was my guide too Pam adds. The two bathrooms were given a timeless look with tongue and groove wooden panelling painted again in Farrow and Ball colours. Traditional roll top bath and traditional sanitaryware continues the

sympathetic restoration and refurbishment throughout. When it came to the bedrooms Pam’s ingenious way of accommodating seven children’s beds in two smallish bedrooms was priceless. For boys she designed two back to back bunk beds which comfortably

accommodate four six footers. And for the girls she designed and squeezed three beds into what looks like a tiny space by shortening the length of one bunk bed to accommodate a small single in the recess. Adding a step ladder and plenty of pastels to the colour scheme to the design seals its appeal for little girls. Two further double bedrooms on the next floor up mean the house can now easily sleep eleven and that’s without using the sitting room sofa bed ! For Pam it was all about making the

property feel like an old fisherman’s cottage that had been updated and putting back some of the original features ,which over the years had been pulled out or covered up with woodchip paper ! Good quality materials are essential to stand the test of time and be sympathetic to the property. A new bespoke hand built kitchen was designed and installed by the Ham team. They reused the original flagstone floor, after it was dug up to gain the head height. Farrow & Ball paints give that timeless classic look to any interior . But Pam

believes all well-made furniture and a great mix of fabrics and colours to make it feel like a stylish comfortable place to arrive and relax as soon as you go through the door. “It’s important to buy good quality. For some reason some people think that you don’t need good beds, good bed-linen, well equipped kitchen but if this is for your family holidays, it’s absolutely what you need, why would you not want to as comfortable there as you are at home?” Pam adds The owners are delighted with what has

been achieved and the house was ready for them at Easter down to the fresh bowl of fruit which awaiting them on the kitchen work top. You would never believe what was behind the front door. What looks like a small townhouse from the outside turns into a spacious family home with space and views on all floors. We just love it here !

Conservatories

I

n Georgian and Victorian times glass houses were very popular and mainly used as garden rooms. Today, however glass extensions fulfil a much wider variety of uses from sitting rooms, kitchen extensions and dining areas. For owners of a period property, the addition of a conservatory is an exciting opportunity to be creative with design and break with the tradition of other conventional rooms in the home, offering a totally unique atmosphere with unlimited uses.

A conservatory is a magical fusion of the outdoors and inside, a wonderful link between house and garden where the atmosphere is one of calm and total relaxation, gifting a sense of wellbeing. Whatever its use, for most, the requirement is for a beautiful room in which to spend quality time either alone or with friends.

It’s important to consider the following DESIGN

Conservatories can be built to suit any period of architecture and most can create a beautiful addition if interpreted with appropriate design detail and proportions. It is of primary importance that the design of a conservatory is sympathetic to the existing property in terms of architectural detailing. With this in mind, don’t mix architectural periods i.e. putting a Victorian conservatory on a Georgian house. That is unless the period of property is less clearly defined with additions or alterations made over the years, and the house can take a more relaxed approach. For many properties, finding some existing detail on a house and mirroring this within the conservatory can make the new addition look as if it has always been there giving it a timeless quality. Where possible source similar materials such as timber, brickwork, flint facings and rendering and try to match prominent features, such as period details, window outlines and glazing bars. If you own a period property but do not have much of an idea about what suits your house, go to a company who have the reputation and years of experience in designing for period properties. Be guided

by their recommendations and visit where they build the conservatories to help you understand what detail is being proposed. Try to invest in the best quality you can afford as bespoke built conservatories will be individually tailored to your needs and add value to your property. Since 2008 guidelines have got more relaxed towards adding a glazed structure to your home, however certain criteria is required. Most bespoke design companies will advise and liaise with conservation officers (listed properties only) and sort out planning where necessary. Due to their expertise in dealing with specific authorities and the criteria needed to successfully proceed, they will have in-depth knowledge of working with older properties and it is advised that you should leave it in their capable hands.

SIZE

Finding the happy balance between what suits your lifestyle and the needs of the property can for some, be a problem when it comes to the size of a new addition. You may want an enormous new glazed room but a modest house would look out of place with an over sized conservatory, and similarly a larger property will require a more substantial structure to maintain a correct balance.

ORIENTATION

What you intend to use your conservatory for will generally dictate where the conservatory will be positioned on the house i.e. day/dining rooms frequently come off kitchens. Position will also be pretty much pre determined if the conservatory is to be used as a place to sit and enjoy a garden or view. However for some properties and where to put your new room is not so obvious, a

IDEAS FOR YOUR HOME

Conservatories

conservatory can create a stunning feature on an otherwise unattractive aspect of the house, perhaps embellishing a plain and featureless wall or replacing unsightly outbuildings etc.

BE SYMPATHETIC

It has been considered by many to put a very modern glazed structure onto a period house. However trends change and as a conservatory is expected to be around for several decades, it is a mistake to make current trend the basis for all work carried out on a property. Bear in mind also that a contemporary approach is not to everyone’s taste and a modern conservatory may be considered an eyesore to some when considering a house purchase, should you need to move. Personal tastes and approaches in style can be applied in the final decoration and interior design. The exterior of conservatories are frequently painted in colours ranging from soft and subtle hues including natural tones and off-whites, to stronger colours for a more dramatic effect. Some owners are quite adventurous in their choice of colour for inside and out, with stunning results. Similarly, the current trend for clean lines and minimal furniture does not look out of place in a period home. Whatever the next trend is, paint and furniture can be altered with no lasting damage.

LIGHTING

Lighting can be done cleverly to give the room

different ‘moods’. At night, consideration needs to take into account ‘reflection’, as any light inside is reflected back into the room. Low-level lighting minimises this problem. Also downlights can be installed around the outer edge to frame the room from within.

HEATING AND VENTILATION A conservatory can be positioned on north, south, east and west elevations and will work equally on either if designed correctly. A south facing (or indeed any other orientation that gets a lot of sunshine) will need to incorporate adequate ventilation in the form of opening side windows and roof vents. This will help achieve a good through draft to expel hot air. Low E glass and tinted glass will also help the problem but beware of some tinted glass which will dull the light even in winter when you need it the most. Designing a good heating system into your room will help you gain optimum use from a conservatory. Underfloor heating and trench heating are both efficient and space saving, allowing you to use the room and walls to the fullest. Conservatories make beautiful plant rooms but in order for them to be a success, adequate air movement must be achieved throughout the room to prolong the life of double glazed units and eliminate build up of moisture fungus. Plants in containers should never stand on an under floor heating system as the roots will suffer.

POINTS TO CONSIDER WHEN DESIGNING AND BUILDING A CONSERVATORY Design n location of the new extension what is the room going to be used for make sure the structure empathises with your property and is in proportion n buy the best you can afford Materials n ensure you match existing details from your property such as brick or render, window styles n owners of listed properties may be required to use timber framed glazing, UPVC is not acceptable in conservation areas Ventilation & Heating n automatic vents in a glazed roof prevents overheating in the summer n extend your existing heating system(preferably on a separate circuit) and make sure your boiler can withstand the additional demand n an extractor is required if the new extension is to be used as a kitchen

f you have the space why not create that wonderful feeling of true opulence by investing in a freestanding bath positioned at the heart of bathroom? - It will create the sanctuary that you would love to have. Bathroom designers are inspired by all of the shapes and styles of the past identifying a tangible sense of heritage and romance in the designs now available. The difficulty is the extent of the choice and as a bath is the biggest item in the bathroom, it is worth taking time to choose a design that will suit the space available and the style of the room. From experience classic

pieces will help to stand the test of time and if you stay in your home for a long time a well-considered choice will also allow you to re-style at some point. If you are changing the entire layout of your bathroom then an important point to consider is the plumbing. Don’t be put off by moving pipes but make sure that you work with an experienced reliable, registered tradesperson on your project. They will be able to offer practical solutions to changing pipe work, hopefully without breaking the bank.

Family bathroom or ensuite A traditional room scheme will balance natural materials such as wood and stone, neutral colours and classic designs. FREEStAnDIng BAthS

A freestanding bath gives enormous scope for creativity and inspired design. In a large bathroom, a stunning freestanding bath such as Victoria & Albert’s contemporary napoli or the new classic toulouse can take pride of place in the centre of the room or in front of a window. Freestanding baths are just as at home in smaller spaces. A typical panelled bath can dominate a restricted area but a compact, elegant freestanding model creates an illusion of space and freedom.

thE FInIShIng touchES

Whilst difficult sometimes to make the choice, remember how much hard work the taps and valves have. It is pointless investing in your beautiful bath and then skimping on the cost of the taps, which in truth take the majority of the wear and tear in a bathroom.

tiles create splash back areas for your wash zone, but they can also be used to create a feature wall or to embody a particular style that gives you that extra feeling of relaxation in your bathroom. Flooring should be easy to clean, non-slip and hard wearing. With the fabulous array of floor coverings, tiles and stone available there will be something to suit everyone’s taste and budget. In your traditional home you may wish to restore wooden floors back to their former glory, so take a look at some of the sealants available for making original floorboards water tight.

n make sure the bath will fit through doors and up stairs (especially if there is a bend in the staircase).

n make sure that there is enough floor space around the bath to get in and out easily. n If you are using freestanding taps, check that there is enough space for them at the end or side of the bath. n If concealing pipe work for taps underneath a freestanding bath is problematical because of the construction of the floor, use a bath with its own plinth - such as the marlborough or york models, or stand the bath on a raised platform - this can look very effective. useful contacts and credits to: The Alternative Bath company Drummonds Victoria & Albert

Where did Vintage Chic come from?

French Provencal

I

t is believed that the style started in Great Britain and it evokes the type of decoration found in large country houses where there are worn and faded old chintz fabrics found on sofas and curtains, old paintwork and unassuming ‘good’ taste. The end result of shabby chic today is to achieve an elegant overall effect, as opposed to sentimental Pop-Victorian. With the popularity of recycling and reusing old furniture and fabrics the look is an important aspect of the style and was especially popular with modern Bohemians and artisans that made up a sidelined counterculture movement during the 1980s when expensive quality decor became very fashionable with the upper middle classes. The original shabby chic interiors were usually considered in themselves works of art. The early forms of shabby chic were rather grand but the style has evolved taking inspiration from many forms of decoration. These range from 18th century Scandinavian painted decoration, the French chateau as well as the American style Shaker where simplicity and plainness was essential. Vintage Chic French furniture conjures up an impression of style together with what we would consider to be beautiful French accessories with a distinct vintage, French or country look. French boudoir look incorporates lace and chandeliers, delicate yet ornate but exceptionally rich. Shabby chic furniture is often heavily painted through the years, with

many layers showing through obviously time-worn areas. The style is regularly imitated by faux painting and by using glaze and then effectively distressing the finished surface by painting then rubbing and sanding away the top coat to show the wood or base coats. Fabrics tend to be cottons and linens, with linen being particularly popular, inspired by old French linens. Pure whites, and worn or bleached out pastels are favourite colours. Fabric is often stained with tea to give it the look of old fabric. Bleached and faded are terms often applied to the style. It is not meant for old chipped furniture. As well as a particular focus upon white Shabby chic style includes soft neutral colours including rose pink, baby blue and subtle beige tones. Today’s shabby chic style is vintage and antique furniture with the original aged paint, or painted white (or another soft pastel colour) with distressing at the corners by rubbing down or sanding. Rococo style lighting, wall paneling and furniture feature in many shabby chic homes, which display French style interior design. Principle of time worn furniture and feminine accessories compliment the great outdoors with shabby chic extending into the garden. Roses are an element, which often feature, and this extends naturally into garden areas and Alfresco dining. Popular decor items are pillows made of vintage bark cloth fabric, vintage linens, chenille bedspreads, vintage chandeliers, and anything with roses on it. It is a soft, relaxed feminine romantic way of decorating that looks comfortable and inviting. Also called cottage style.

Interior Design

Time well spent Mary Leslie discusses the merits of hiring an interior designer

I

have just finished remodelling a wonderful flat in Central London which was an object lesson in the importance of careful planning before the builders ever set foot on the site. The flat was badly in need of loving care and attention, not to mention a completely new layout. Which meant stripping it back to the concrete shell in most areas and starting afresh. The client already had an excellent builder working on the project, and a very competent draughtsman had started negotiations to get the necessary permissions for the work, but no one was yet planning the fine detail which would make the place special. In close consultation with the clients I had to unpick some of the early decisions and redesign the space to be genuinely bespoke, whilst also embracing the

practicalities of family life. Naturally, the client was keen to finish the technical stuff and move on to the fun part – colour schemes, fabrics, furniture, carpets, decorative lighting etc, but we had to spend considerably longer on the interior design, i.e the fitted joinery, kitchen, bathrooms, plumbing, electrics, heating, security, hard finishes, cornices, mouldings and audio/ visual installation before we ever embarked on the interior decoration. Of course we were creative, but behind it I had to be ruthlessly methodical. It is the time spent planning, discussing and costing the project which will spell the difference between success and disaster. Once we were sure that we had the fundamentals right we had great adventures

finding the right fabrics, furniture, lighting and upholstery to fulfil our vision for the flat, whilst keeping within the budget and the time frame. The end result if a flat which not only looks wonderful, but works too, and the client now understands how vital the time spend on the design stage can be. This principal applies equally whether you are employing an Interior Designer/ Decorator or trying to manage on your own. Let us assume, first of all, that you do not plan to use an interior designer, however, some of your work will involve an architect and/or a main contractor. It is vital that you establish the scope of the works. Ask yourself these questions: If the architect is only involved in the new structural work, who will prepare the building

Interior Design

specification for the rest of the property? n Are you or the architect going to mark up the electrical layouts? You may be able to plot on to a drawing where you want the wc, basin and bath in a bathroom but who is going to provide the builder with working drawings? n Where is the tiling layout? n Who is ensureing compliance with Part P and Part L of the building regulations? n Who is doing the drawings for the joinery work such as the fitted wardrobes? n Who is preparing the electrical layouts which will show the positions of the sockets, switches, TV and telephone points, downlights, wall lights, shaver sockets, appliance spurs etc. all of which have to be taken into consideration? n Who is going to plot your furniture on to a measured survey to ensure that the circulation works? By that I mean – are you sure that if you put all your existing furniture into a room will it fit? Can you move round it? Will it fit through the door in the first place? Until you have considered all these points you should not go ahead with any works.

I think the furniture layout is incredibly important I am very wary of letting remote CAD operators or even local architects plot furniture on to a floor plan, and always prefer to do so myself.. This is because they can be a bit cavalier about the actual dimensions of furniture. So often I see a sofa plotted on to a drawing only 80cm deep. Sofas are usually 95/105cm deep. The error, however inadvertent, can be very deceptive. I am fortunate enough to be able to judge almost straight away whether drawings are accurate but you may not be so lucky. You then you need to decide on tender vs. negotiated contract. I always advocate a negotiated contract, however, architects generally recommend going out to tender. Here is my logic: As an interior designer I have a working relationship with a couple of building firms who I know well. This is not financial – it is built on trust and mutual understanding. They know and trust me, and appreciate that when I come to them with a project it is likely to be a genuine enquiry. Equally I know and trust them. We work well together and understand each others’ strengths and way of working. Once the specification has been established we collaborate to achieve a price which is fair for the job. However, if you put the same project out to tender to five firms, one or two will be too busy to bother, one will put in any old sum because he is not too fussed, one will be high and one low. How can you possibly judge which is the best? The contractor who was involved from the beginning on a negotiated contract is much more likely to spend the time finding a price which is agreeable to everyone. Remember that if you are not employing

an interior designer you have to hope that your architect and builder are not too absorbed by the structural work to ensure that the interior spaces work for you too. Going back to my opening comments, when I looked at my client’s plans I asked her – where is the desk going in the family room? Where will you sit to watch TV? Are you sure you have enough room in the laundry to dry the clothes? Where will you store your light bulbs/tool kit/step ladder/ironing board/ wine/bicycles/wet coats and gum boots? Where is the linen cupboard? - followed by ‘that linen cupboard is far too small, where is the rest of it going’? Where will you put your books? Have you thought how much hanging space each person needs? Are you going to have a safe? Where? What about the long distance suitcases? Skis? Picnic stuff ? Etc. etc. The list is very elastic. Up to this point I have suggested that you may be considering doing the design work, never mind the project co-ordination yourself. Are you sure that is wise? If your project is purely cosmetic, and all that you intend to do is paint the walls, lay some new carpet and change the soft furnishing then fine, I am sure you can manage by yourself, but as soon as builders are involved, and your project starts to run into the tens or hundreds of thousands, I would suggest that you should consider using a professional, who will ask all these questions for you, and resolve them – but then as a Professional I would say that, wouldn’t I? Lighting your wardrobes Lighting the front of your wardrobes with discreet downlights (LED Polespring, £144 from John Cullen), adds a practical light source – when the doors are open you may not need any internal cupboard lights. The reflected light will also make the room look larger. If you want to add some discreet lighting inside your cupboards then use LED strip (High CRI Contour, £141 per metre or Streamer , £72 per metre from John Cullen) behind a vertical baffle either side of the cupboard door to evenly light the shelves. These are best operated on a door contact switch.

2

Lamps Lamps often provide the best background lighting. In most bedrooms, it works well to have a lamp either side of the bed and at least one or two others. A standard lamp by a chair or a pair of lamps on a dressing table give soft background light which is perfect when combined with downlights (LED Polespring, £144 from John Cullen).

3

Children’s rooms For a bit of fun consider a starlight ceiling using fibre optics above the bed or if there are recessed wall niches, you could use a colour change effect (RGB

A dedicated reading light (LED Cama, £349 from John Cullen) is a better solution allowing your partner to sleep undisturbed. A plug-in could be the perfect solution (Pocket of Light, £477 from John Cullen)

5

Night lights A floor washer, (1w LED Oslo, £121 from John Cullen) works well near the entrance to a bathroom while

an LED strip (High CRI Contour, £141 per metre from John Cullen) under the bed creates a floating effect.

sally storey, design director of John Cullen Lighting, is one of the country’s leading lighting experts. much of her time is spent traveling all over the world to design lighting schemes for individual and corporate clients. she has written three very successful, wellreceived books on the subject of lighting and is regularly asked to speak at top interior design events.

Bright by day, intimate by night An LED strip (High CRI Contour, £141 per metre from John Cullen) on top of a wardrobe can uplight the wall above to create a fresh bright effect in the day and be dimmed to create a much softer feel in the evening. Downlights (LED Polespring, £144 from John Cullen) can be used to add some drama by lighting the front of wardrobes or highlighting a headboard.

N

o matter what size, shape or style of your home, the kitchen is likely to be at the centre of it. Nowadays we do so much more than cooking and cleaning in our kitchens. As housing and lifestyles have changed, kitchens have become more of an important focal point of our homes and busy family lives. Kitchen design has evolved significantly in recent years. Stylish functional appliances, superb co-ordinated lighting often combined with energy efficient controls and high quality audio technology have all become a necessity. Many of us require more

storage and would like to have entertainment and waste management quite literally on tap. That is without the water purifier. The kitchen is almost definitely the most important room in the home, so choosing and planning a new kitchen needs to be given considerable thought, especially when it has to fit into a traditional style property with plenty of nooks and crannies and not too many straight walls. So really where do you start when you feel that your kitchen needs a makeover or a refresh or possibly a completely new design?

MAKeover or refreSH

Looking at at makeover or a refersh there are so many looks and styles and ways of making your kitchen feel new but without changing the whole structure. This may often work best for a traditional home as change will often come with structural changes and requirements, which in a traditional home can prove to be costly. Perhaps your appliances have seen better days – thankfully most of these will fit into standard size fittings or oven and fridge housing so these could be changed to suit some of your changing

T

he traditional cooking range, with its hand-crafted good looks and quality cooking, epitomises a relaxed, homely lifestyle in town or country. The EVERHOT offers all this, and far more, at a cost that is astonishingly down to earth. The EVERHOT is an electric heat storage cooking range that simply plugs into a 13 amp socket, and needs no flue or concrete base. With a choice of sizes that make it easy to position alongside your standard kitchen units, it gives you all the control and versatility of modern cooking methods, together with the even baking and winter warmth of the traditional range. The standard full width grill in the upper oven is another of its many advantages over other comparable ranges. To top it all, the EVERHOT averages less than half the running costs of most other traditional ranges. Not surprisingly, for more than 20 years, EVERHOT has been the choice of

thousands of delighted owners across the country. The EVERHOT is a true heat storage range and is therefore designed to provide both cooking and room heat. The range is available in matt emulsion (Cooking with a range cooker is all about cooking in the oven. Right? WRONG! Unlike many other manufacturers the hotplates and ovens do not drop in temperature when the lid is lifted! Why fill your ovens up with vegetables when you could be filling them with fantastic joints of meat, roast potatoes or whatever else you love cooking? At EVERHOT we do not like to dictate to you how you should cook, however; if you have always preferred to cook in the ovens, then our cookers will also allow that. The principle of oven cooking in a heat storage range cooker (ours included) is that the entire body of the oven heats up evenly

and the food is gently cooked by radiant heat, there are no naked flames or fans to move hot air past your food (drying it out in the process) and hence it will cook beautifully and taste sublime. Don’t just take our word for it, Rob Rees runs regular Demonstration Events with the Everhot range. In addition, we have a selection of Recipes to really let you show off your Everhot cooker. We’ve also got our Cooking FAQs section, to help with any questions you may have. For those of you who have already purchased a cooker, Rob Rees also offers a cookery course at his home in The Cotswolds. This is a luxurious day spent cooking in small groups with a Michelin starred chef. You produce some fantastic food which is then consumed over lunch! If you have specific issues that you would like to cover, these can often be incorporated into the day. Please contact www.everhot.co.uk

needs. It can sometimes be worth changing appliances just because of the improved energy efficency ratings now available with newer technologies. There are many companies which will supply purely new doors and often new worktops to sit on existing ones which will again minimise the amount of stsructural work requried. or simply painting will bring a fresh feeling to your kitchen where you can co-ordinate new containers and pots and pans to give a fresh look and feel. But if you want to undertake a major new design then there are some practical things to consider even before you start to design your kitchen. It will inevitably be a labour of love. So what to consider first? Get the layout right for you Start by assessing your own space! Consider all of the things that have occurred to you over the years – that you would change. My best example of that - is why did we put the knife and fork drawer where we did? We now all face the family room and Tv and stand in front of the drawer – so we dance around whilst preparing meals getting in the way of the next person who requires utensils. Simple answer we knocked down a wall after fitting the kitchen – so consideration was never given to where we might stand. Measure up and make an accurate floor plan – this can be easily achieved by using graph paper. The type of layout you choose will of course depend upon the amount of space you have and whether or not you are going to keep the existing layout. I also use Newspaper the size of the appliances and put the template on the floor once the units have been removed – just to make sure that it really works for me. Like many I find it difficult to transfer what looks to be a perfect design on paper into the reality of the kitchen space. Much of this will be determined by things that can add significant additional costs -particularly that of services or structural changes. Sometimes the budget will determine the re-design.

CoNSIder THe foLLoWING:

n Position of pipes and water supply n Where are the windows and doors are positioned? n Where are you going to put your main appliances? n Is there a power supply already there? n Where are the power points located? n Is there enough work surface to prepare food on? If you are removing the old units, you will not have to keep the previous layout. Play around with different combinations, until you

have a design you’re happy with that you can present to a kitchen planner

WHAT oTHer PrACTICALITIeS do You Need To CoNSIder?

As you go, think of a kitchen’s functions and work these into zones in your plan. food preparation, cooking, serving and washing-up afterwards are the four main jobs all kitchens need to fulfil. Make sure each zone has sufficient worktop space, storage for its associated stuff and all the necessary appliances to hand. Kitchen designers also regularly work with the ‘work triangle’, which dictates

the sink, cooker and fridge should form the corners of a triangle in relation to each other. Sinks traditionally live under the window because access to the plumbing is easier and having a wall cupboard above the sink traditionally results in banged heads although it is possible to incorporate draining racks above it. unless you have an exceptionally large kitchen, the majority of kitchens will be created in 4 main configurations, the L shaped, the u shaped, galley or Peninsula. It is important to keep the fridge, sink and oven in close proximity to have everything to hand when preparing food, often referred to as the working triangle.

It is important to consider doorways and windows, natural light and views from the space. Particularly significant, for those with young children is the ability to view children playing in the garden whilst preparing meals. There is also the thoroughfare to consider – vitally important when considering where to plug in kettles and any surfaces, which may be regularly hot.

This is very much down to personal taste. However, there are many ways to achieve the look of your dream kitchen, you will probably decide of the outer or frontal look for of all and then choose the appliances, worktops, flooring, accessories and door and drawer furniture. Most people like to keep a theme running throughout the home, but contemporary kitchens can contrast well within older properties and more traditional styles can work well in modern homes. If you have a smaller kitchen which you want o give the appearance of looking larger, go for paler colours and clean simple lines to help to created a sense of space. Consideration should be given to lighting and reflective surfaces, which can also help, make a space look and feel larger.

WrAP (Waste & resources Action Programme) tells us that 20% of the average household waste is food waste, which is staggering when you consider that, as a nation, Brits throw away £23billion of food each year. rather than end up in a landfill site, it’s possible for this food waste to be disposed through the standard pluming system and transformed into biogas via anaerobic digestion.

At the touch of a button, food waste is dealt with hygienically and instantly. Not only is your kitchen kept fresher and cleaner but contrary to popular belief, the disposers are completely safe and use no knives or blades to reduce the food. The waste is ground down into tiny particles that are flushed away down standard sink plumbing. once at the water treatment plant, the food scraps can be used to create biogas or soil conditioner as part of a modern waste management approach. InSinkerator offers a range of five food waste disposer models with varying features, but all offering excellent levels of performance and reliability. The new evolutionâ 200 and 100 models provide up to 60% quieter operation and are more powerful than ever before, ensuring their place as the finest grinding disposers available. The evolution 200 can even grind an entire chicken carcass using its three-stage grind! The standard range of models (45, 55, 65) offer great performance and the ability to handle varying amounts of food waste. every food waste disposer model is compact enough to fit under the sink without taking up valuable storage space. The simple and quick mounting assembly across the range makes for fast and easy dIY or professional installation.

t’s amazing how a fresh coat of paint can instantly – and inexpensively – transform a room. Whether you’re looking for a neutral shade to use as a versatile yet never bland backdrop, or you really want to make a statement with a dramatic shade, Fired Earth have all the colours you need. Fired Earth have worked in collaboration with designer and television presenter Kevin McCloud to create the Colour by Kevin McCloud collection, a palette of 120 sophisticated colours ranging from soft whites and creams, to delicate pinks, blues and greens, and eye-catching reds, purples and greys. A capsule collection of six vibrant shades inspired by the Festival of Britain was added to the range last year, so there really is a colour for every style of home. The colours have been created using

traditional pigments, minerals and resins such as red ochre, raw sienna, ultramarine blue etc. and these colours have real subtlety and complexity. They’ve also stood the test of time and work really well with the light in this country. They’ve been chosen for their depth of colour and light fastness, and they provide exceptional coverage. The range is based on historic pigments without being in any way muddy or dull. Kevin McCloud wanted to create colours that have a historic earthiness about them but which are also fresh, clean and suited to today’s homes. A key feature of the range is that all of the paints are minimal VOC (they’re all waterbased) meaning that they’re better for the environment and are virtually odourless. The paint is also made in the UK. www.thimagazine.com | Traditional Homes & Interiors | 93

Race Yellow This image shows Race Yellow matt emulsion from the Mid-Century Colours by Kevin McCloud capsule collection, a palette of six colours designed to celebrate last year’s 60th anniversary of the Festival of Britain. The paint is available in matt emulsion and eggshell and the matt emulsion shown here costs £29.50 for 2.5 litres.

The range is available in matt emulsion (£29.50 for 2.5 litres) and in eggshell (£17.50 for 750ml). Fired Earth’s National Trust paint collection is a palette of 36 colours that takes inspiration from the historic sites (architectural and natural landscapes such as Wittering Sands) within the National Trust’s care. So, for example, Ham House is a soft purple similar to a shade found on the great staircase at Ham House, while Drogo Yellow is inspired by yellow glazed bathroom tiles at Castle Drogo in Devon. As above, the paints are made using carefully selected pigments, minerals and resins so they provide exceptional depth of colour, light-fastness and durability. Considerable thought has gone into developing colours that will have (and have

been proved to have) enduring appeal, rather than colours that are a reaction to trends. Again, all of the paint is minimal VOC and it’s made in the UK. The range is available in hard wearing emulsion (£32.50 for 2.5 litres) and in eggshell (£17.50 for 750ml). Increasingly, people are combining paint with tiles and papers. All Fired Earth’s paints complement their tile ranges, as well as the recently launched Ottoman wallpaper collection. Fired Earth’s stockists number is 084 366 0400 (www.firedearth.com). Wellers Auctioneers

Wellers Auctioneers E

clectic barely describes Wellers Auctioneers – the vast array of goods on offer attract decorators, private buyers and trade alike to their sales in Chertsey and Guildford. As one of the few auctioneers who do not have a minimum lot value inclusion of goods in the sale is up to the ‘eye’ of one of the specialist valuers, so if its appealing and quirky but only worth about £20 they will still give it a go. The sales therefore offer a wider breadth in period, style, material and quality - to suit all tastes, budgets and interiors. The sales are split into specialist sections for ease of viewing but within those sections anything goes. The last general sale included a Sino-Tibetan prayer bell with prayer manuscript, a stylish Baccarat wine cooler and some fabulous mink coats! The ability to span markets came from the very origins of Wellers, the famous livestock auctions and the sales have moved since 1866 to encompass fine art, antiques and collectables, garden statuary and architectural salvage. The friendly and approachable management team have attracted specialist

valuers to work at Wellers giving them unrivalled expert knowledge in the area. With the addition of their recently opened saleroom at Guildford they are set to take Surrey by storm and be a major player in the provincial auction world. Famous finds -The ability to spot the rare and desirable was put to good use recently when European ceramics expert Jane Brown identified an 18th Century coloured pearlware pottery figure brought to the Chertsey saleroom for free valuation. The owner had paid £5 for it in a local car-boot sale. The lot was fully researched (and had one of Wellers longest catalogue descriptions ever…) and identified as a very rare Wood family figure of Alderman Beckford a former Lord Mayor of London. The figure was eventually contested sold for nearly £8,000. It was taken home by its new owner, cradled like a new-born infant, in a chauffeur driven limousine! Tips for the Future -Designers and decorators galore flock to the sales for this is where trends are formulated rather than followed. Wellers reports the ‘Downton’ effect- sales of vintage fashion and Edwardian

furnishings are up. Cut glass and dinner services are rising and ladies fur coats and accessories are now selling well to the English market. Fine dining, dressed to the nines in vintage clothing is a treat and if one is lucky enough to own a traditional home what better way to entertain! Hotly tipped for the next trend is World War I ephemera, the centenary of the outbreak of war coming up in 2014 is sure to see an interest in family history and all things war related. Though often seen as ‘boys toys’ the trench art of WWI can be highly decorative - as the marine woolwork picture sold recently proves. A delightful and poignant collection of framed sweetheart silk postcards sent from the front is sure to find a new loving home. Did the writer make it back? Or is he listed as one of the poor men who lost his life? Traditional Home? Try a Traditional Auction House -Both the salerooms have charmingly quirky interiors. The auctions are held in Victorian buildings, and it is a rarity nowadays for auction houses not to be held in a warehouse or a sterile white painted rooms. The Guildford saleroom was once a ginger beer factory, the Chertsey rooms a Constitutional Hall. The furniture and objects offered for sale are set out in room settings, the tables even laid with china dinner services and fine cut glass. The rooms have the air of a bargain to be found or the purchase of a lifetime to be made.

Though the salerooms look traditional and antiquated the technology behind the rostrum is cutting edge. Wellers have moved with the times taking advantage of online bidding technology - so even if you are sitting in your armchair in Hong-Kong you can still bid and view Wellers auctions. Free Valuations are offered at both of the salerooms – the Chertsey Saleroom Wednesdays, Thursdays & Fridays 10am to 4pm and the Guildford Riverside Saleroom - Mondays, Tuesdays & Thursdays 10am to 4pm. We also offer Saturday valuations by appointment only at our Guildford premises. Entries are now being taken for our forthcoming sales, please visit our website or telephone for full details. Our sales are always available online if you are unable to attend via the-saleroom.com

She has formed a great working relationship with architects, interior designers and specifiers at VLDG, the Vennie Lau Design Group (www.vldg. com) with offices in New Jersey and New York City. Morag’s first meeting with Vennie Lau at ICFF, 2010 was informed by Ms Lau’s enthusiasm for her vibrant patterns and how they could fit with the seasonal theme of her new hotel project. Morag’s

connection with Glasgow was also of great interest to Ms Lau who appreciated the legacy of interior and architectural excellence that this part of the world still exudes in contemporary design today. The result is a

riot of colour with patterns and motifs from Morag’s ‘Masculine and Feminine in Nature’ collection overlapped and juxtaposed for a very contemporary feel. Everyone was pleased with the final designs which will enhance

the minimalism of these contemporary bedrooms. There will also be info available in the hotel foyer on Morag Macpherson Textiles and their involvement in this exciting project. The headboard fabrics were designed at Morag’s studio in Glasgow and are printed in UK, making this a 100% British fabric. Headboards are being manufactured in Italy to ensure best quality for what is sure to be a luxurious and contemporary hotel. Morag Macpherson Textiles will return to ICFF, NYC in May 2012 for the third consecutive year to engage in more business opportunites with USA. Morag says: ‘I have had a great experience dealing with VLDG, every step of the process has been a joy to work on, with mutual respect, patience and understanding being the order, which isnt always the norm in big business’. Morag Macpherson Textiles began creating surface pattern designs in 2006, which she now has digitally printed onto her own exclusive and limted edition range of fabrics and wallpapers. Working with pure silks, fine wools, natural linens and crisp cottons, designs are inspired by direct experiences in travel, art history, urban and natural environments and stylised strongly from Morag’s background as a graphic designer. Design heroes include Milton Glaser, Patrick Caulfield, Lazlo Maholy-Nagy and Varvara Stepanova. Influence is also derived from comic and manga art, graffitti and tribal art, and Art Brut. Illustrators such as Jessie M King and Francis MacDonald aswell as Dulac and Beardsley are all in the mix. Textiles from africa and indonesia especially, adorn the walls of Morag’s studio. Morag uses her own photographs, she sees patterns and shapes everywhere! Line drawings are usually rendered by hand, repeated and coloured, ready for print. A diffusion range of interior and fashion accessories (cushions and scarves) is available and commissions for one-off patchworked wearable art clothing and interior pieces (wall hangings, throws, kimono, wraparound skirts and bags). Morag feels most comfortable working on new briefs for large-scale projects and is currently talking with UK architects on future hotel, airport, restaurant and nightclub projects. Previous projects Morag has worked on include Liberty, London; London Fashion Museum; Edinburgh Hatwalk and National Museum of Scotland. Exhibtions in Istanbul, Tokyo, Milan and at London’s prestigious ICA continue Morag Macpherson Textiles’ international presence in contemporary design. Morag has since moved her studio

to the Artists Town of Kirkcudbright in Galloway, a beautifully scenic and artistically reknowned corner of south-west Scotland. New collections will be inspired by the diverse landscape and the legacy of artists and designers who have lived here - there are many links to Glasgow with members of the Glasgow Boys and Glasgow Girls all residing here in artists colonies at one time over 100 years ago. Today, a vibrant community of artists prevail, culminating in Spring Fling Scotland’s largest and best open studios event. From 2-5th June, Morag will exhibit her range of digitally printed fabrics, wallpapers, interior and fashion accessories and oneoff, patchworked wearable art and interior commissions. Morag has also been chosen to mentor the first Young Artists Programme and will be helping Coral Beattie, a local

weaver and designer/maker to exhibit her beautiful creations for the first time since graduating from Glasgow School of Art in June, 2011. A joint exhibiton throughout June 2012 will culminate at the appropriate ‘Mill on the Fleet’ in the pictureque village of Gatehouse on Fleet.

PANDORA’S BOX

Adam’s Fireplaces

Adam’s Fireplaces T

he Adam timber neoclassical fireplace is one of the most intriguing – and, at the same time, one of the most underrated - architectural icons of the late 18th century. My own experience of them goes back to my childhood, when I found myself fascinated by the elaborate design of one in an Edinburgh house, since demolished, belonging to friends of my grandparents. It had a maritime theme, and was replete with seashells and intertwined fronds of seaweed. On its central panel there was a pensive looking lady leaning on an anchor as a ship sailed off into the distance. I must have been about nine years old, and naturally assumed that this concerned a seafaring tale which can only have had something to do with pirates. A few years later I would be provided with another version of the story. It was, apparently, Emma, Lady Hamilton, pining for her departed Lord Nelson. As time went on I discovered that there was an entire genre of folk art combined with neoclassical perfection in these ‘Adam’ fireplaces. The popular ‘dancing ladies’ design, for example, was based on Henry Bunbury’s drawing of the Gunning sisters, the ‘It’ girls of their day. The youth harnessing his horses to the plough - a design which even found its way into George Washington’s dining room - was reputed to be the poet, Robert Burns. An image of cupid being bound by the three graces was designed by the noted artist, Angelica Kauffmann. Other designs features shepherd boys, church spires, hunting scenes, griffins, and Phoebus in his chariot - there is even one in an Edinburgh house with a profile of Robert Adam on it! These chimneypieces were much more popular in the last quarter of the 18th century than architectural historians now seem to realise - according to the original inventory of drawings in the Soane Museum, perhaps 75% of the fireplaces used in Robert and James Adam’s Adelphi scheme were ornamental timber ones. With the onset of war with America and France, sea routes were blockaded and supplies of Italian marble dried up, leading to an explosion in demand for such schemes as Edinburgh’s First New Town, and Bedford and Fitzroy Squares in London. A fast-track production system was obviously necessary to keep pace with Britain’s urban building boom. After the war, a healthy

export trade was developed to such towns as Chareston, South Carolina. Tragically, much of our knowledge of this extraordinary corner of Britain’s architectural history has been lost, partly because the Georgian and Regency look became unfashionable in late Georgian and Victorian times, and a prejudice was developed in favour of marble - a prejudice which is still around. The post-war attrition of these timber neoclassical fireplaces has been particularly serious, often as a result of theft, the conversion of houses to offices. or a lack of awareness amongst conservation officers. If any aspect of Britain’s art history needs to be re-assessed, it is surely this one.

Kit Stone Traditional Kitchens

Traditional Kitchens that stand the test of time T

he kitchen is so much more than a room for preparing and cooking food - it’s the heart of the home. While it should be fully-functional and practical, it should also reflect the individual character of your home. However, it can be difficult to find a kitchen, which incorporates the latest design features, yet is also in keeping with the style of your house. Take a look at Kit Stone’s timeless designs, where traditional craftsmanship is combined with the latest technology. Hand made from solid wood utilising traditional joinery techniques, every cabinet is built upon a solid interlocking frame using mortice and tenon joints - no chipboard or MDF is ever used in a Kit Stone kitchen. And with an average kitchen costing just £10,000, Kit Stone also offers outstanding value for money!

Country Kitchens The Chichester is the ideal choice for a

country kitchen - a classic painted kitchen, designed to complement a traditional home. Hand painted in limestone as standard, the kitchen is available in a choice of 28 heritage colours. In the Chichester range, there is a wide range of dining tables available from small pedestal tables to large refectory extending tables - and painted dining chairs to match. Choose a classic potboard or butchers chopping block to complete the look.

Shaker Style For a painted finish, but with a more contemporary feel, the Suffolk fits the bill with its traditional Shaker-style clean lines. Hand painted in dove grey as standard, it is also available in 28 alternative heritage colours. The Suffolk incorporates the latest design features such as dimmable lighting with concealed glass shelving to a magnetic close system. The range features a stunning larder

cabinet available in single, double or full height curved. It has three adjustable shelves, drawer boxes and a handy door rack for storing smaller bottles, jars and spices. To complement the Suffolk kitchen, there is a full range of dining tables, painted chairs, wine racks and dressers.

Natural Oak Equally at home in town or country, The Henley kitchen is a new take on classic oak. An extremely practical kitchen, lower cabinets come in a drawer format for ease of use. Drawer boxes, made from solid oak are constructed using traditional full dove tail joints on each corner and set upon state of the art soft-close under drawer runners. The designers have ensured that essential kitchen items such as the dishwasher and bin are cleverly hidden behind doors. A revolutionary skirting system allows a choice of options from fully skirted to semi-skirted

A warm and perhaps even a bit cheeky welcome from his trio of canines will delight you completely while the carefully curated plethora of furnishings and their bespoke options will literally astound you. This haven is what David, alongside his graceful partner Gaynor, have envisioned all their lives: a beautiful place in which to create. Concentrating specifically on the

juxtaposition between classic period tastes and elaborate contemporary style, David Long Designs enjoys an unsurpassed reputation as one of the most sought after leading design houses in the UK. Their showrooms have recently undergone a major renovation in order to accommodate their latest venture whose name truly says it all: Luxurious Living. As part of this

latest offering, David has recently been fortunate enough to be selected by the world-renowned Spanish designer Maria Jose Guinot to become the exclusive UK suppliers of her Coleccion Alexandra line of home furnishings. This is a partnership that has helped the two companies bring their outstanding designs that are already known in over 60 countries throughout the world to the international property market that abounds throughout the British Isles. An array of Coleccion Alexandra furnishings, alongside such high profile brands as Christopher Guy and Julian Chichester can be seen in either the ground floor showroom or the award winning lifestyle settings of the upper floors. In addition, as exclusive stockists for Europe’s most impeccable home furnishing manufacturers, they hope to share their finds with other designers throughout the UK. “Finding like-minded creators that share the same ethos with regards to interiors has been our goal” says David,

“we want people to fall in love with these collections the same way we have”. Their taste is impeccable and the calibre of projects that their small but lovely staff completes throughout Europe is simply breath-taking. When you visit David Long Designs you immediately understand the beauty that drives their business, a passion that is contagious. Luckily, the designer’s bespoke collections can grace your home as well. “His creativity continually surprises me, he thinks of interior possibilities that never would have crossed my mind” says Alva Horton, David’s American Interior Designer turned Marketing Director. In fact the most surprising thing is perhaps the familiarity and closeness one immediately

feels when visiting their studios, you’re instantly listened to, asked to pull up a chair and discuss your project. Whether you’re a skilled member of the design industry or a homeowner daunted by a full house overhaul, regardless of the scope, budget and location, David can be found on Gillygate, waiting to help you realize the home of your dreams. At the end of your visit you’ll part with brilliant ideas for a luxurious design and always a new friend. www.davidlongdesigns.co.uk
