Welcome to Denver Colorado and thanks for joining us for the 23rd Annual HIA Conference! We are excited to be hosting our 2016 conference in the most active region in the USA for hemp farming and business. The HIA was founded in 1994 by a group of hemp businesses and advocates. Our members have been fighting for legal hemp farming ever since. Several HIA members formed Vote Hemp in 2000 with the goal of changing state and federal laws to once again allow American farmers to grow hemp. As we begin this conference, hemp crops are being harvested across Colorado and more than a dozen states. Colorado has been a leader pushing for hemp farming. In 1995, Colorado state senator Lloyd Casey was the first legislator to introduce a bill that would define hemp as distinct and allow farmers to grow the crop. Many other Coloradans helped lead the effort to bring hemp farming back including Laura Kriho, David Martin, Bob Winter, Linda Parker, Barbara Filippone, Summer Star, Erik Hunter, Brian Vicente, Ryan Loflin, Mike Bowman and more. These pioneers and many more here and nationwide didn’t give up and continued educating about the benefits of hemp as an agricultural crop. They faced stiff opposition from misinformed law enforcement and public officials who claimed that people would hide marijuana in hemp fields but they didn’t give up. These efforts were finally successful with the passage of Amendment 64 and its hemp provision in 2012 which lead to historic hemp plantings by Ryan Loflin, the Stanley brothers and others. Two years later advocates celebrated the passage of the Farm Bill which included Sec. 7606 authorizing research and pilot programs under the authority of state departments of agriculture and institutions of higher learning. Hemp has great potential and the future can be bright and profitable but we must continue to fight to reduce regulations and uncertainties that limit the market and keep much needed investments on the sidelines. We need to develop new varieties of hemp which grow well in various states and meet the requirements of todays industry. We need to conduct research on new applications for hemp and invest in processing technology. We have a lot of work ahead of us. Hemp pilot programs are only a start. Most importantly, we need to pass federal legislation to allow states to regulate the crop without interference from the DEA. The legislation to do that is pending in Congress, and we all need to reach out to our representatives and make sure they know how important S. 134 and H.R. 525 are to our industry. We also need to educate farmers, support research and development of American seed varieties, find new ways to use this crop and build the infrastructure needed to process and manufacture hemp products. All this is possible and by working together we can move this industry forward. I look forward to working with you all to ensure The Future of Hemp.

It’s time to reclaim industrial hemp as a domestic agricultural commodity. Farmers in Canada, Europe and China grow hemp for the US market (estimated at $620 million in 2014). Tell your Senators to allow commercial hemp farming once again.
