One Outstanding Day The two newest members of the Outstanding family tell us about their journeys… Congratulations Bewick House and Broadview! The past few months have been challenging for all our services, but Bewick House and Broadview had some good news to help them through. We spoke with the service managers to learn more about how they achieved Outstanding!

Bewick House Service Manager Tracy got the amazing news whilst in lockdown – she phoned the team straight away to tell them! “I was totally ecstatic and really quite emotional! It was such great news in such difficult times.”

We caught up with Service Manager Alison to find out how the inspection went and how the team dealt with it on the day… “Well, it was a strange day! We had been expecting CQC for months – every time the doorbell rang we would all hold our breath! I was off for the day and Sue (Team Leader) called to say that Matthew Holt was at Broadview for our financial audit and that CQC had also arrived at the service!

“As I had received this ‘call’ before from my senior team as a prank, I did not believe Sue or even Matthew that CQC was there! I was eventually convinced that it was true, so I dropped everything to get to Broadview. inspection went Read Our more on very smoothly and our inspectors were really friendly. It really was a good experience.”

We asked Tracy to journey back to the day of the CQC inspection… “We’ve always seen the CQC as an extension of good practice, so it’s part of everyone’s normal day. It made the day of inspection relaxing – it was just like normal. “We also made sure that everyone living at Bewick House understood the role of the inspector and the CQC: they were coming into their home after all! It meant that on the day, they all spoke comfortably and were keen to get involved and share all the things they love doing. “It’s important to remember that it doesn’t have to be perfect. If something isn’t right, there’s always a solution. Just don’t stress, and think about how you can fix it.”

“If a long-term challenge seems too hard, try to ease in slowly. Avoid the shops for a while and shop online for your groceries – it’s too easy to pop unplanned items in the trolley on the weekly shop.”

Top tips

for sustainable fashion Here are some top tips that you can try to make your wardrobe more sustainable:

1

Amanda

In January Amanda Griffiths, our Director of Quality, set herself a ‘no-buy 2020’ challenge… What inspired you to challenge yourself not to buy anything new in 2020? I hate waste and was horrified to find out that the UK sends 300,000 tonnes of used clothing to landfill each year – this can take 40 years to decompose.

What has been the hardest part? I rocked the challenge for six months, but in lockdown I had to buy some casual t-shirts and a new light to help me work at home. I just tried to learn from these purchases and move on – the important thing is that the commitment remains!

Once I found out I decided to try to go a whole year without buying anything new, and finding ways to reuse things that would usually be thrown away.

What are your top tips for anyone wanting to try something similar?

How have you tackled this challenge?

2. Learn about upcycling, recycling and freecycling and think about how to pass on unwanted items.

Joining online groups is great; I have learned a lot about sustainability, and the importance of not throwing things out for the sake of it.

1. Be clear about why you want to do it – research the impact of waste.

3. There is a whole library of programmes about sustainability on Netflix to set you off on the right foot!

Never throw anything away! Donate your old clothes to a charity shop to give them a second life.

Will you wear it more than 10 times? If you know you’re not going to wear it a lot, don’t waste the money or space in your wardrobe!

Learn how to repair clothes yourself Dig out your sewing kit or buy yourself a cheap one, they’re always handy.

Go for quality over quantity You don’t need lots of clothes to look great, you can have fewer items and mix and match!

Clear out before you go out! Have a look through your wardrobe first before you go out and buy some new items. You don’t know what you’ll find hidden at the back!

How green is

Hepdene?

Hepdene House have been going green. They wanted to attract lots of nature to their garden. It started with a simple bird feeder outside the office window, but now they’ve built an entire wild garden – home to lots of new visitors!

I like feeding the birds and seeing the different birds it attracts.

So that there’s a home for some of their new garden visitors, resident Bruce made a bug hotel.
