TRIPLE WIN!

E

ven before I arrived in Banff, the jaw-dropping scenery from the Icefields Parkway was already more spectacular than I could have ever imagined! Little did I know, I was just getting warmed up—Banff had a lot more in store for me to enjoy. This particular ski destination is indescribably charming and has that special something you just won’t find anywhere else. The town’s main street—Banff Avenue—is picturesque and lively, and boasts a string of restaurants, stores, boutiques and hotels, with the colossal Rockies standing as a backdrop to it all. Needless to say, the scenery is pure bliss. The only down side is you might find it hard to resist the call of the mountains when they are literally right there staring down at you! You’ll always be itching to put your skis back on! In addition to being a perfect ski town, Banff also features 8,000 acres of skiable terrain over three resorts and happens to have the longest ski season in North America.

LAKE LOUISE With over 130 runs for beginner, intermediate and expert skiers, this resort has something for everyone. More experienced skiers can also visit the other side of the mountain to discover the impressively steep bowls and chutes. Once you visit, you’ll see for yourself why Lake Louise is one of the biggest ski resorts in North America.

SUNSHINE VILLAGE Located 15 minutes from town, Sunshine has 3,300 acres of skiable terrain and the enormous Rogers Terrain Park, with its whopping 12 acres. Thrill seekers can head for Delirium Dive and Goat’s Eye, which have some of the most extreme terrain in Canada. It’s a great place to spend 2 or 3 days during your next ski vacation!

MT. NORQUAY The closest mountain to the town, Mt. Norquay is also the smallest of the three. Despite its size, though, it also offers skiers some crazy steeps and a great challenge. Why not make an evening of it and do a little night skiing? The view of the illuminated valley below is nothing short of magnificent.

powder and alpine paradise that has everything you could dream of—there are no better words to describe Whistler. On my first visit in 2010 during the Winter Olympic Games, I was instantly smitten. And I’ve been back every year since then. Located about an hour and 45 minutes from Vancouver, Whistler is an immense playground with loads to offer ski enthusiasts of every level. No matter what you’re looking for, Whistler has got it: perfectly groomed corduroy, dense glades with moguls and challenges galore, and even vast glaciers with steep vertical that is sure to please even the most adventurous. The best part is that everything is so easily accessible thanks to the 36 lifts servicing the mountains of Whistler and Blackcomb. These two superb playgrounds are connected by a gondola that gives you access to a variety of completely different areas. From the top of the Whistler Glacier, you can make your way to several legendary spots including Harmony Bowl and Symphony Bowl, or even enjoy a short excursion over to Creekside where you can tackle the Dave Murray run, used for the Men’s Downhill event in 2010. Blackcomb, for its part, has an undeniable charm all its own. Climbing to the top of the glacier on foot is an absolute must. It’s just a short 3 to 4-minute walk to amazing views of the valley and an 8-km trail that will take you all the way back down to the village. The 7th Heaven side is the ideal place to end the day since it gets full sun throughout the afternoon. Most importantly, Whistler is truly the full package. Its village and hotels make everything so easy. No matter what you need or want, it’s just a short walk away from your accommodation. There are tons of restaurants sure to please every palate and budget. While in Whistler, why not treat yourself to a little something extra? Pamper yourself at the Scandinave Spa, check out the pro ski shops or indulge in an unforgettable powder adventure with a cat-skiing or heliskiing powder excursion. My very first heliskiing experience took place in this jewel of the Rockies, so I can almost guarantee that you’ll enjoy a dream vacation complete with unforgettable memories sure to make you the envy of all your friends. I look forward to seeing you this season! [ Alain Chiasson ]

WHY IS REVELSTOKE SO POPULAR WITH SKIERS FROM EASTERN CANADA? CLARA | It's a well-known fact that people from the East coast

WHY

REVY A

lthough they could have chosen any other place in the world to call home, Laurent and Clara—our destination reps—opted for Revelstoke. In fact, the pair fell head over heels for this quaint little town almost instantly, and I can’t say I blame them. With Revelstoke’s insane amounts of top quality snow, easy access to the resort and Glacier National Park, who wouldn’t love the place? Laurent and Clara are now happy to be part of the active, vibrant and welcoming community Revelstoke is known for.

An interview with two truly passionate people whose main objective is to help everyone discover the little piece of heaven called Revy.

just love the great outdoors, which makes Revelstoke a perfect fit for them. Despite its remote location, however, the resort also provides easy access to everything you need. It’s a fabulous destination without the insane crowds you’d get at Whistler. Plus, it has the most amazing powder!

LAURENT | Everyone loves Revelstoke because you’re practically always guaranteed to enjoy amazing snow!

WHAT SHOULD EVERYONE KNOW ABOUT THE MOUNTAIN BEFORE HEADING THERE? CLARA | Revy is not for beginners! You have to be in great shape and have tons of experience powder skiing because it can be pretty difficult if you’re not used to it. LAURENT | Don’t think you can come here with your allmountain skis. I strongly recommend you rent powder skis to ensure you enjoy your vacation. And, believe me, what you’ve heard about Revy is no exaggeration—get ready for some crazy amounts of snow!

WHAT IS THE MOST SURPRISING THING ABOUT REVELSTOKE? CLARA | The glades are perfectly laid out and the food is heavenly… not to mention, often Quebec inspired! LAURENT | The long vertical drop! You’ll know what I mean once you’ve tried it!

ASIDE FROM SKIING, WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND? CLARA | A visit to the Halcyon Hot Springs, a cat-skiing excursion, cross-country skiing at McPherson, a day of guided ski touring and a delicious dinner at Woolsey’s!

LAURENT | Let’s not forget that Revy is the heliskiing capital of North America! And, there’s always snowmobiling. Oh, and the Monashee Distillery to end the day in style.

Clara Boisclair & Laurent Gentilcore -Saulnier O U R O N - S I T E R E P R E S E N TAT I V E S

It's the 5th year in a row for our on-site representatives in Revelstoke. They look forward to welcoming you all season long.

AND, FINALLY, THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION OF ALL: WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE RUN ON A POWDER DAY? CLARA | Sub Peak followed by Greely Bowl. It’s pure joy! LAURENT | SWF, the run just below the lifts. That way, I can look up and wave hello to my friends (who also happen to be late risers)!

As you can tell, Revelstoke has won Laurent and Clara’s hearts— as it is sure to win yours… after a single descent! [ Marie Duchesneau ]

ED Mountain Resort is one of the few destinations that still hasn’t gone too commercial and is still far enough away from the crowds. It’s also the first stop along the famous Powder Highway. With 2,877 acres of near-virgin snow, in addition to the expansion of Grey Mountain (which added 1,000 acres of terrain), the resort has earned a spot among the Top 20 biggest resorts in North America! Given its 7.6 metres of snowfall per season, its amazingly affordable cat-skiing, brand new boutique hotel, The Josie, and its super friendly people, no wonder the NY Times ranked Red Mountain 8th on its list of the best places in the world to visit. Add to that the title of The Most Underrated Resort, bestowed upon Red by Skiing Magazine, and you can’t help but want to experience it for yourself! [ Monyse Bélisle ]

had the opportunity to visit Whitewater once several years ago. A telemark skiing enthusiast, I had been following a group of pros during a run at Red Mountain one evening when I took the end of a pitch a little too fast and ended up twisting my leg something serious. I was sure I’d have to cancel my plans to go to Whitewater the next day. (Oh, and, just another small detail—the area was hit with a wonderful 40 cm of snow that very night!) Early the next morning, Éric, a physiotherapist from the group brought me to the gym so I could warm up my muscles with a half-hour session on the exercise bike, constantly repeating: “You just have to come! You can’t miss this!”.

Always easily swayed, I decided to join the group. To this day, I still have Éric to thank for it! The insanely deep powder, perfectly groomed trails (albeit less steep than other B.C. mountains), endless glades you could practically get lost in, the mountain’s laid-back and anti-commercial atmosphere, and outstanding ski lodge food make Whitewater one of my top 5 picks for world’s best ski destinations.

Once a hidden gem, Whitewater is no longer a closely guarded secret. As a result, the resort decided to make some much-needed investments in 2017. The old Summit Chair has been replaced with a new fixed-grip quad chair, both the original Day Lodge and the Glory Lodge have been revamped and expanded, as have the parking lots. But, despite all of the upgrades, the mountain’s authentic and laid-back atmosphere still remains—along with its 40 feet of annual snowfall! [ Alexis de Gheldere ]

TOURING

A

lthough the vast majority of skiers prefer reaching the top of the mountain using a lift, it appears that a growing number are also climbing their way to the top using alpine touring ski equipment—a surefire way to add a little extra adventure! Alpine touring—which involves climbing a snowy mountainside with backslide-preventing skins strapped to your skis—is a sport that is steadfastly gaining in popularity throughout Canada. Whether you choose to do it for the workout, or for the purpose of exploring your local ski resort, any reason is a good reason to try alpine touring! At the same time, it goes without saying that this particular sport takes on a whole new meaning when you enjoy it on a grander scale. Personally, I think a trip to the Chic-Choc Mountains in the Gaspé Peninsula is the perfect place for it—as long as you are always accompanied by a guide or prepared with avalanche training. Every year, Gendronski organizes a series of group departures to the Gaspé area—the perfect getaway for alpine touring enthusiasts! Above and beyond the Chic-Choc Mountains, British Columbia is certainly the most popular alpine touring destination, hands down.

And, there are so many ways to enjoy a ski vacation in this part of the country. Last winter, I stayed in a mountain lodge (Boulder Hut) located a 20-minute helicopter ride from Kimberly. It was pure paradise. I also quickly understood how important it is to be physically prepared for the challenge of skiing about 1,500 m of vertical per day—let me tell you, it’s no easy feat! There is such a wide range of mountain accommodations here and so many different formulas to choose from, you're bound to find something that suits your experience and your desires. Glacier National Park (Rogers Pass), located between Golden and Revelstoke, is an absolute must. This place is internationally renowned for its varied terrain, easy highway access and, most of all, its phenomenal powder. Add a heli touring adventure to the mix (details on Page 29) and you’re set! Accompanied by a guide, you’ll be transported to a remote sector of the mountain to enjoy a unique and wonderful day. Alpine touring is the perfect mix of physical challenge, adventure and skiing. Each and every run you enjoy will be well deserved. [ Paul Dubrûle ]

Ski Touring Packages in the Purcell Mountains Half-week package (4 days): $1,845 / pers. Full-week package: $2,665 / pers. o many ridges, couloirs, chutes… my feet are tingling just thinking about it! Expert skiers will want to make their way to the top of Terminator 1 and 2—T1 and T2 for short—and lay down fresh tracks all the way down to the bowls. And, as you make your descent, you’ll no doubt want to take the time to delight in the jaw-dropping scenery that surrounds you. It’s also a true skier’s paradise. Kicking Horse is heaven on earth for any hard-core skier looking for that adrenaline rush—the resort’s 60 double black diamond runs clearly attest to that! But, don’t let that dissuade you if you don’t quite consider yourself an extreme ski hound. Kicking Horse truly has something for every level of skier—40 single black diamond runs, 15 blue and 21 green—making it a great choice for all. One thing is certain, this place has a lot of options to choose from! In 2017, the resort received 606 cm of snow and 96 days of precipitation… need I say more? [ Daniel Melançon ]

TASTE OF

PARADISE

A

t Sun Peaks, there are so many powder days throughout the winter, you’ll have countless opportunities for laying down those first, fresh tracks.

After a short wait at the lifts, you’re on your way! The wide-open runs are so infinitely vast, you feel like you’ve got the entire place to yourself! And, as an added bonus, the wonderful smell of red pine follows you as you wind through the islands of trees in the Morrisey sector. Adrenaline junkies will want to explore the Gils ski area and the bounty of glades. In keeping with Sun Peaks’ motto of “why walk when you could be skiing?” accommodations in the alpine village are ski-in/ski-out no matter where you stay. Of course, the result is a fabulous laid-back atmosphere like no other! And, because you have easy access to countless services and ski shops right in town, you can devote all of your time and energy to the one thing that matters the most—hitting the slopes!

© Sam Egan

One of my favourite things to do is enjoy a delectable fondue dinner at the top of the mountain before making my way to the slopes again for a nighttime run back down—I once even came face to face with a fox! All in all, Sun Peaks is a little taste of paradise just waiting to be explored! Don’t put it off any longer. Book your Sun Peaks vacation now! [ Christine Quirion ] © Royce Sihlis

fter visiting Big White on three separate occasions, I can easily say that I am still blown away by everything this amazing resort has to offer. If you’re looking for the ideal spot for a family ski vacation, look no further than Big White. Located a mere 55 km from Kelowna, Big White enjoys average temperatures of a very pleasant –9ºC as well as superbly abundant snowfall ranging between 750 cm and 24 feet annually. This resort was designed to ensure that skiers of all levels find exactly what they need. I particularly recommend you try the Cliff Bowl for its incredibly impressive lines! With its wide and well-groomed runs, intermediate or expert glades, snow parks, Snowcross track, immense bowls and wonderful family-friendly village, Big White is unquestionably a great option for your family’s ski holiday.

As an added bonus, Big White features a must-see attraction that has also become the resort’s signature: the extraordinary snow ghosts. These creatures, formed by snow-encased trees at the top of the mountain, can be seen just under the chairlift bearing their name—the Snow Ghost Express. We promise it’s an experience you won’t soon forget! [ Mario Daniel ]

anorama is one of those places I just couldn’t wait to visit. I have to admit that I am positively sold on ski-in/ski-out towns. I frankly love the fact that everything is so accessible and easy, and that I have nothing else to do but sit back and enjoy. I consider myself somewhat of an epicurean and I just love good skiing, great food, easy access… all that a real ski vacation should be. The resort village of Panorama is magnificent and, everywhere you look, the view is, well… panoramic (excuse the pun)!

BANFF | $99 Round trip transportation, ski lift ticket (offered on Tuesdays only).

Panorama is also as family-oriented as it gets—from the mountain’s ski school to the condos equipped with full kitchens (to help you respect your family’s everyday routine and budget) and the wide range of non-ski activities (skating, games, etc.) perfect for keeping everyone entertained. Now, moving on to more serious business—let me tell you a bit more about the skiing (this is a ski magazine, after all). Panorama has something to satisfy every skier in your group! I must admit that the terrain is much more varied, vast and especially steeper than I initially thought, especially with the 128 acres of skiable terrain that was added in 2018. And talk about snow! While it’s true that Panorama sometimes gets a little less of the white stuff than its other Western counterparts, the snow in these parts is simply divine. Adrenaline junkies will want to head for Taynton Bowl with its crazy steep terrain and challenges galore. You will definitely want to indulge in a good soak in the hot tub at the end of the day to help relieve your burning thighs and get you ready for the next morning. The vertical drop at Panorama is quite impressive. You can ski 4,200 metres down a run that will take you up to 45 minutes to complete. Now that’s some serious skiing! Come evening, be sure to stop in at the Mile 1 Hut where you can refuel with a delicious fondue before heading back downhill, your headlamps guiding the way. [ Bianca Montpetit ]

had been hearing a rumour floating around for quite a few years about a place called Castle Mountain—a ski resort in Western Canada that I somehow knew nothing about. Now, you may no doubt be wondering where the heck this place is! Well, folks, this fabulous hidden gem can be found just south of Alberta… and it’s definitely a place worth discovering. Here’s how I would describe this amazing find: challenging terrain, steep runs, tons of snow, a reasonably priced cat-skiing outfit, a hotel, a restaurant, recreational vehicles in the parking lot and a super fun mountain.

PERFECT

W

estern Canada was truly blessed during the 2017–18 season. This was especially true for Fernie, which received over 11 whopping metres of snow! Given this, you can well imagine that my expectations were high when I headed there for a ski vacation in mid-March, accompanied by several group leaders and journalists. Our visit to Fernie happened to coincide with some festivities that were in full swing at the foot of the mountain. With most of the skiers already seemingly in après-ski mode, it felt like we were the only ones on the mountain… free to enjoy and explore as we pleased! Since our group consisted mainly of expert skiers, we headed for the mountain’s five bowls. We particularly enjoyed the runs down from the Polar Peak lift, not only for the terrain, but also for the spectacular view. If you are a little intimidated by the size of this mountain, know that we have a destination rep on site this year who will be more than happy to help you find your way around. And, if you feel like pushing yourself a little further, you can always sign up for the Steep and Deep camp at the ski school. Fernie’s beauty extends far beyond the mountain. The Western-style village is utterly picture-postcard perfect and, come evening, the city’s main street is action packed! Where accommodations are concerned, Fernie has options for every taste and budget—including newly added luxury cottages. In short, Fernie has it all and would be a fine addition to any ski safari along with Castle Mountain, Kimberley or Kicking Horse. Fernie is undeniably one place you’ll never tire of! M

y very first heliskiing experience was a crazy week-long adventure. Let me be clear, the actual heliskiing outing itself only lasted a day… but, I had been dreaming about it for so long that I didn’t catch a wink of sleep the night before, nor the following night. In fact, I couldn’t even sleep after getting back from my vacation. My friends and I simply could not believe that we had skied such enormous mountains and such sublime terrain, surrounded by mounds of seemingly endless snow in every direction. We really felt like we were worlds away, hearing nothing other than the muted sounds of the helicopter in the far distance and the soft swoosh of our skis in the powder. The terrain accessible by helicopter is truly gigantic, and the pilots and guides make it their mission to spoil you rotten… and believe me, they are always successful! As the day progresses, they get to know the skiers in the group and select the runs that best suit their needs. What more could you ask for, really?

The only dilemma is that, once you’ve experienced the joy this kind of skiing brings, it will keep you (and your legs!) wanting more… If you can afford it, heliskiing is an absolute skier’s dream. [ Caroline Samson ]

rom the moment I first laid eyes on SilverStar Resort, it was clear that this place was like nothing I’d ever experienced before—a unique alpine village with the most colourful Western-style buildings that give the place a fun, joyful feel. And, as amazing as the surroundings are during the day, I was blown away by how astoundingly magical they become at night!

SKI SAFARI

Located in the Okanagan Valley, SilverStar boasts great snow conditions all season long, even in late March when I was visiting: plentiful precipitation, light powder and mild weather that is perfect for preserving the snow and allowing you to ski comfortably.

Combine SilverStar with other Western Canadian destinations: Sun Peaks, Revelstoke, etc. Details on Page 32.

After trying both sides of the mountain, I could easily see that the back side was the best choice for more experienced thrill-seeking skiers, thanks to its double diamond runs and epic glades. However, the mountain also gives intermediate and beginner skiers a chance to tackle some of that great vertical on a run that weaves through the entire mountain.

EXTEND YOUR STAY

Come lunchtime, a well-deserved break at Paradise Camp is a great option. With its wood-burning stove, rustic look and comfort foods, this restaurant has a warm, friendly atmosphere you are sure to love.

O

ver the last year or so, Mont-Tremblant has been hard at work revamping its facilities. First off, alpine touring and fat bikes are now an integral part of the Tremblant scene. The resort also underwent a major overhaul that includes the replacement of the Lowell Thomas chairlift, renovation and expansion of summit chalet Le Grand Manitou as well as the addition of new glades. Clearly, Tremblant has reaped the benefits of the major investments made by Alterra Mountain Company since being acquired by them last year. There is yet another happy consequence of this takeover. Those who are planning a ski vacation in Banff, Revelstoke, Aspen, Steamboat, Mammoth, Squaw Valley, Jackson Hole, Big Sky, Alta/Snowbird or even Killington and Blue Mountain can benefit by purchasing the IKON PASS or the IKON PASS BASE through Gendronski. These packages combine your season pass to Tremblant with 5-day, 7-day or unlimited access to several of these resorts. It’s a great opportunity to discover some new runs! The resort offers a variety of events which are fun, festive and always worth checking out. You won’t want to miss dinner at the Refuge and late afternoons spent at Place St-Bernard, soaking up the sun after a day of non-stop spring skiing. Hope to see you there! [ Caroline Samson ]

U

pon arriving in SUTTON, I already feel like I am in a whole different world: the main chalet’s picturesque charm, the old double chairlifts along with the more recent quadruple lifts and the most amazing views from both Chalet Alt.840 M and the summit! Making my way back to Sutton is like reconnecting with an old friend! One of the best things about SUTTON has got to be the awesome micro-climate that favours the mountain. The result is the type of glorious snow cover that powder hounds dream of. SUTTON is the perfect place for those who enjoy skiing with slopes that weave through the mountain and superb glades for which it is renowned. And, if you’re a die-hard adventure seeker who wants to discover even more glades in the off-piste areas on a powder day, a private lesson with a Level 4 monitor is the perfect option! Like many other skiers do, I ended the day with an ice-cold beer at the Le Tucker bar, a hopping little spot renowned for its vibrant après-ski atmosphere. [ Marc Boucher ]

LE MASSIF DE CHARLEVOIX

ANYTIME!

T

hinking about what to do and where to go? Well, look no further than Le Massif de Charlevoix. Skiing at Le Massif is like nothing else in Quebec. Want proof? Last November, Club Med announced that Le Massif would become the company’s first ski resort on Canadian soil—even before the resorts out West! In addition to the 120 million dollars to be invested by Club Med between now and 2020, the resort itself has plans to complete its own four-season recreational tourism project featuring unique activities and a wide range of accommodations. Their main challenge: preserve the site’s authenticity and rugged beauty. Although Le Massif doesn’t compare to British Columbia and Alberta when it comes to vertical, it nonetheless boasts the highest in Quebec. What’s more, Le Massif’s long, winding runs reserve something very special in store for those skiing there for the first time—they all lead to a beautiful spot on the shores of the St. Lawrence River where the water stretches twenty kilometres wide, giving it a magnificent ocean-like feel.

Of course, since the base of the mountain sits alongside the river, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views: drifting ice of all shapes and sizes, deep blue (and sometimes hazy) winter waters and tiny cargo boats off in the distance, making their way towards the ocean or en route to Montreal. No other ski resort in the world offers anything even close to this. And, although you might miss the charming old school buses that used to take skiers from the base to the top in the 1980s, we’re sure you’ll appreciate the high speed lifts that make it easy to enjoy at least four or five descents per day. A POWDER HOUND’S DREAM

A

EXTEND YOUR STAY n all-inclusive resort where you can ski Japan’s prime powder for less than $3,200? Talk about a great deal! At this price, you’ll surely be checking Japan off your bucket list a lot sooner than you think.

Hakuba is a sector in the Nagano Prefecture, where you’ll find several of Japan’s biggest ski resorts. Gendron Travel’s chosen hotel is located in Cortina, the most westerly ski resort of Japanese Alps, not to mention the snowiest! Hakuba regularly gets twice as much snow as Happo One—another great resort with fabulously steep slopes and amazing off-piste skiing you can explore with a guide. At Cortina, your hotel is located just a few metres away from the lift and features an onsen (Japanese hot springs), which is great for relieving those tired muscles at the end of the day! Hakuba’s glades are an indisputable powder hound’s dream. And, even though the hotel is relatively big, the vast majority of Japanese skiers prefer to hone their skills on well-groomed slopes, reserving all of the marvelous untouched powder just for you! If luxury accommodations are on your wish list, I recommend you book the Tokyu Hotel at Happo One. Take note—although you have the option of walking along a country road to make your way to the resort, you might want to save your energy for carving up the slopes. After all, if Hakuba was good enough for the 1998 Nagano Olympic Games, you know for sure it’ll be pretty challenging! Happy skiing! [ Jean-Luc Brassard ]

agano is now a name that most of us are familiar with. This fabulous city is located deep in a sheltered inland valley where you’ll find the Japanese Alps and the Hakuba sector on the south side and Okushiga Kogen—the biggest interconnected ski area in Japan—on the north side. Make your way to the national park on the road to Shiga to see the incredibly photogenic Japanese macaque monkeys who like to hang out in the sulphurous spring waters deep at the bottom of a valley. Located en route to the mountain, this place is well worth the stop. Be sure to bring your camera! The trip up to Shiga is spectacular, as much for the long, windy roads as for the incredible snow accumulation. The Okushiga Kogen ski area is the last one you’ll come across along the way— in what is literally a hole full of snow! The mountain’s new administration is extremely proactive and is busily expanding its glade skiing options… after all, isn’t this the reason most people go skiing in Japan? Although the resort only has 10 runs, off-piste areas seem almost limitless and the abundant Japanese snow is always fresh! Plus, there are so few customers here that you won’t have to wait for the lifts. And, as another added bonus, Japanese skiers generally have a

W

ith the haphazard weather we’ve had in the Western U.S. over the last few years, countless powder-hungry skiers have made the journey to Japan in order to satisfy their appetite for abundant snow. We’ve seen it in movies, reports and through first-hand accounts—skiing in Japan is an undeniably extraordinary experience. Naturally, all this talk has made Japan an increasingly popular destination. The positive side to this new-found fame is that Japan has revamped its services to meet international standards. In spite of Japan’s growing popularity, the snow remains abundant here in the Land of the Rising Sun. Over the last few years, Gendronski clients have delighted in an average of one metre of snow during their stays in Niseko. The most surprising thing is that snowfall measurements are taken by an independent organization that only calculates accumulation at the base of the mountain! Thanks to an on-site guide, skiers can regularly enjoy an average of 25 to 40 cm of fresh snow every day! In addition to the abundant snow (which is no doubt the main reason you’ll be going to Japan), remember that Gendronski’s package includes 2 days in Tokyo, where you’ll have time to settle in and discover this exceptional and incredibly safe city. Again this year, I look forward to some memorable powder runs. Hope you get to enjoy some too! Sayonara!

Chile is a fabulous land of contrasts. In Santiago, temperatures reach a cozy 20oC while, at the foot of the slopes, the thermometer drops down to a magnificently cool 5oC. A short 90-minute ride along a winding cactus-lined road with 50 memorable hairpin turns will get you to Farellones, where you have three options to choose from: El Colorado, La Parva and Valle Nevado. Keep in mind that La Parva and Valle Nevado both provide unlimited off-piste skiing. Gendronski also provides the option of creating an unforgettable ski safari package. During the course of your one-week getaway, you’ll get to discover three different ski resorts and enjoy a day of cat-skiing at Valle el Arpa. With no trees to be found and volcanic rock as far as the eye can see, this place feels like you’re on the moon… and the skiing here is just out of this world! Your ski safari ends in Portillo, where the hotel boasts magnificent views of Laguna del Inca. It's also possible to ski at Nevados de Chillán, located south of Santiago. Last summer, skiers at this resort were even treated to a volcanic eruption—talk about a once-in-a-lifetime experience! [ Christian Falardeau ]

THE LEGEND

U

tah is a legendary ski destination renowned for its abundance of snow and recognized as a powder paradise. The most popular ski resorts in this part of the Midwest unmistakably include Snowbasin, Park City and Brighton, not to mention Snowbird and Alta! © Simon Evans

During my trip there last February, I stayed in the heart of Salt Lake City, less than 15 minutes from the airport. With everything located in close proximity, I was able to explore a number of restaurants and tourist areas, including the Mormon Temple, one of the city’s main attractions. Public transportation is easy to access and free with your ski package, making it a breeze to get to the regions of Big and Little Cottonwood Canyon; the resorts are all located between 45 minutes and an hour from the city, tops. Needless to say, I could talk to you for hours on end about the five mountains I had the chance to tear up, but let me focus on my two favourites instead—Alta and Snowbird. Alta and Snowbird are both nearby and actually located side by side. That means you can hop over from one to the other during your stay. Although these two are neighbours, each resort is quite different and has its own unique charm. And, let me tell you, I had never seen as much snow as I did until I went to these resorts! At Snowbird, while on the tram, you’ll be treated to the most spectacular views of the valley—from high peaks with vertical drops extreme enough to scare even the biggest adrenaline junkies, to thick glades that are sure to satisfy your wild side. Of course, Snowbird also has perfectly groomed wide runs where you can carve some huge turns to your heart’s content. The resort also has a tunnel that goes right through the mountain, allowing easy access to Mineral Basin on the south side. Just hop aboard the magic carpet and you’ll be there in minutes flat! The

tunnel also offers a quick glimpse into the world of the pioneers through a collection of antique objects and period photographs. Neighbouring Alta is a different place altogether. The base of the resort has two ski lodges—Wildcat Base and Albion Base. The two are connected using a transfer cable which allows you to get from one to the other without having to take off your skis. The Wildcat side features steep glades with a few technical traverses that give you a chance to challenge yourself without having to go outside the boundaries of the mountain. Albion, on the other hand, has several beginner-intermediate runs accessible from the highest point of the resort. From the top of the Sugarloaf Lift, you’ll find the famous Devil’s Castle Area black diamond run. And, at the end of the day, you can finish things off with a satisfying meal at the Goldminer’s Daughter while enjoying the magnificent view of the mountain—but, don’t forget you have a bus to catch to get back to your hotel, so don’t linger too long. Then again, there are always accommodations right at Snowbird! [ Alain Chiasson ]

EPIC PASS

s a professional acrobatic skier, I’ve obviously had the opportunity to visit tons of beautiful ski destinations. And, out of all the amazing places I’ve been to, I have to say that Park City, Utah is one of my absolute favourites. Funny enough, when you’re sitting in the resort’s parking lot, Park City looks like any other place in the Laurentians since you can only see a tiny portion of the mountain from this particular vantage point. Once you make it halfway up the first lift, though, it’s a whole other story. That’s where the entire mountain comes into view—in all of its immense glory! I was personally shocked by the size of it. In fact, it takes 30 minutes to get from the base to the peak. While it’s obvious that Park City is astonishingly high, it is also incredibly vast. You would have to take 6 different lifts or gondolas if you wanted to make your way from one end of the mountain to the other. So, you can well imagine that it takes much more than one day to explore the entire Park City ski area. In addition to being colossal, Park City happens to be very unique insofar as, up until the 1950s, the mountain was actually a silver mine. The resort’s owners have preserved the mining facilities which sit beneath the slopes to this day and are also open to visitors. Park City is a mountain unlike any other, and one that skiers of all levels will appreciate. [ Jean-Christophe Nadeau ]

SKIING… COWBOY-STYLE!

lthough Wyoming is best known for its vast plains, wide open spaces—including renowned Yellowstone National Park—and, of course, its cowboys, alpine skiing is also very much a part of the landscape in this great American state. To the south, Grand Teton National Park features some amazing ski resorts. And then, there’s Jackson Hole, which should definitely be on everybody’s bucket list! This particular resort is known for having the longest continuous vertical in the U.S. Plus, its large percentage of black and double black diamond runs makes it quite appealing to more extreme skiers. My personal favourite is the Hoback sector, where I’ve clocked some of my fastest downhill speeds ever! And, if you can gather up the courage to tackle the famous Corbet’s Couloir, you’ll get to experience an adrenaline rush like no other. All this might lead you to think that Jackson Hole is made exclusively for expert level skiers—but nothing could be further from the truth! In fact, close to half of the runs at this resort are blue or green, making them much less intimidating and much more appealing to groups and families that include skiers of all levels. espite being one of the biggest resorts in the U.S. and boasting some of the longest runs, Big Sky is still relatively unknown and scarcely frequented by our local ski enthusiasts. It’s a shame really, when you consider everything that Big Sky has to offer—not only is this place really big, it’s definitely less crowded and less commercial than many of its counterparts. Located in Montana, close to Yellowstone National Park and just a few hours’ drive from Jackson Hole, the village of Big Sky sits at the foot of Lone Mountain. Big Sky Resort, and neighbouring Moonlight Basin, offer a wide variety of runs, massive bowls and have everything from steep and narrow trails to big, wide boulevards groomed to perfection. That being said, Big Sky is much more than just a big resort with amazing facilities. It’s one of the most family-oriented options around. In fact, what struck me the most about Big Sky is how welcoming the staff is. Everyone is just so friendly and helpful, not to mention incredibly laid-back. Basically, everyone just does everything they can to make sure your vacation is unforgettable!

VAIL When I started working as a group leader for Gendronski, I had a few fetish destinations, one of which happened to be Vail. After all, Vail had been voted the best ski area in the U.S. on countless occasions. So, what exactly is it that makes this place so great, you ask? Well, first and foremost, Vail is a high-altitude resort. That means you’re pretty much guaranteed to enjoy tons of the best snow there is. And then, there’s the fact that Vail has some incredibly varied terrain. The mountain’s front side features mostly wide, impeccably groomed runs. Those who prefer vast, open spaces can head to the Sun, China and Siberia Bowls; there are 7 bowls in all to choose from on the back side of the mountain… and it’s pure heaven. If natural glades are more your thing, then make your way over to Blue Sky Basin.

BRECKENRIDGE When considering other options, think Breckenridge. During my last Colorado adventure, I got to ski this resort and it proved to be quite the discovery. Located a mere 15-minute bus ride from the Town of Vail, this resort is sure to please. With 187 runs and a little over 1,000 metres of vertical, who wouldn’t enjoy this place? My last visit there happened to coincide with some fantastically heavy snowfall, so I spent most of my time enjoying the 11 bowls on the highest point of the mountain. Despite the fact that it’s pretty steep, this sector is still quite easily accessible to skiers of all levels. Its wideopen spaces (and no trees!) make it a great place to learn how to ski untouched terrain. While you’re there, don’t miss out going all the way to the top of Peak 8. Weatherpermitting, you’ll be treated to some of the most aweinspiring views you’ve ever seen.

s the Chamonix Valley comes into sight, we squish our faces up against the windows of the bus, stretching our necks up to try and absorb as much of the view as we can. Of course, the mountains are much too big and much too high. There’s no way to take it all in! And what about the charming little village of Chamonix? Even with its buildings and multi-level hotels, the peaks of the Mont Blanc mountain range stretch thousands of metres past the edge of town. The vertical landscape is replete with the area’s legendary peaks covered with everlasting snow. It’s easy to understand why when you consider that this particular ski area consists of several sub-domains, each of which is bigger than a dozen or so of Quebec resorts put together.

EXTEND YOUR STAY Add nights at Hôtel Terminal Neige - Refuge Du Montenvers. Price on request.

ADD NIGHTS Add nights in Megève, Courmayeur or Verbier (where skiing is offered with your MBU ticket) Conditions and supplements may apply depending on destination. Contact our specialists for details.

VALLÉE BLANCHE Skiing the Vallée Blanche is a must! Advanced skiers wanting to push their limits may want to try hiking a portion of the Haute-Route Chamonix-Zermatt. Contact our specialists!

PARAGLIDING OR HELISKIING Paragliding tour or a day of heliskiing between Chamonix and Italy are also offered. Price on request.

I can’t possibly express the immensity of this legendary place in so few words. Unless, of course, I tell you about the Aiguille du Midi, which can only be accessed using two separate cable cars. That alone should give you a good idea of its size. Needless to say, however, you’ll only truly understand just how colossal this place is when you spend a day enjoying an unforgettable ski descent of La Vallée Blanche (with the help of a guide!) and experience it for yourself. Once you try it, you’ll be hooked! No matter how many times you go, I guarantee you’ll be blown away—every. single. time. [ Alexis de Gheldere ] © Monyse Bélisle

VAL THORENS LES MENUIRES

GENUINE

E

veryone has a destination that brings back fond memories— for me, that particular destination is Les Menuires.

I was seriously impressed by this spectacular resort, not to mention the colossal ski area of Les 3 Vallées (the biggest in the world). What probably impressed me the most was the fact that you can access over 600 km of runs from Les Menuires, and that’s without even counting the off-piste areas. You can head towards Méribel, Les Menuires, Saint-Martin de Belleville, Val Thorens or Brides-les-Bains, to name just a few. But, as fabulous as the skiing was during my vacation there, the most unforgettable memory I have is finding myself smack in the middle of a mountainous amphitheatre, inside a tiny stone cabin savouring an extraordinary goulash served to us by the innkeeper. So, if making unforgettable memories is part of your vacation plan, visit Les Menuires. You won’t regret it! [ Mario Daniel ]

GENDRONSKI 2018-2019

What a unique experience! This enormous playground, featuring the highest altitude ski area in Europe, is perfect for a full day of skiing under the sun, capped off with some après-ski fun at La Folie Douce bar. The exceptional 360-degree view of over 1,000 peaks stretches all the way to the Péclet Glacier and is, by far, the most spectacular in all of Europe. Top it all off with guides of the highest quality, and you’ve got a ski vacation beyond compare. The snow is fabulously abundant, the runs are fast and steep and the off-piste areas defy description. It’s the thrill of a lifetime! [ Christian Falardeau ]

SKI MORE FOR LESS

I

t was Jean-Luc Brassard who, in the early 90s, first acquainted us with this superb village at the foot of Les Trois Vallées—and it proved to be quite the revelation indeed! In fact, this impressive destination has absolutely everything that our clients need: excellent value in terms of accommodations, a welcoming community and access to the largest ski area in Europe.

Almost 30 years later, we’re still in love with the place. This little piece of heaven in the French Alps is definitely worth discovering. Let yourself be captivated by all that this incredible destination has to offer. Ski more… for less. [ Paul Dubrûle ]

LARGER THAN LIFE

V

al d’Isère is one of those places that leaves an indelible mark on your heart and soul. One where you’re surrounded by absolutely insane vertical everywhere you look.

Featuring 78 lifts including two funicular lifts, the lift system connects 300 km of runs, which essentially only represents a tiny percentage of the overall ski area and pales in comparison to the available off-piste skiing. My particular sector of choice was the Pissaillas Glacier. The Pays Désert sector—which, as its name implies, is quite deserted!—gives experienced off-piste skiers a chance to ski on the glacier. It’s one of the most amazing things you’ll experience. The T-Bar worker suggested I head over to the Pyramides and Signal sector, through which you can access Grand Vallon, an enormous off-piste area where you’ll hop from one glorious powder run to another. This is the place where I seemingly lost all control— jumping and diving right into the snow. As I scanned the map, I realized that I’d barely covered 5% of the ski area. It was clear I would have to come back many times if I wanted to even make a dent in the rest of it. [ Alexis de Gheldere ]

CHARMING SWITZERLAND

L

ast spring, I fell completely under the spell of Verbier and Les 4 Vallées. Not only is it the largest ski area in Switzerland, this place is also a pure delight for the eyes! The breathtaking views are brimming with jagged peaks and dotted with the most beautiful mountainside log cabins. At lunch, I had the opportunity to stop in at several different mountain restaurants, with decors ranging from rustic to art deco. I treated myself to cheese, cheese and more cheese… along with a variety of local specialties—of course, if this isn’t your speed, there are also lots of other delicious menu items to choose from. As impressive as the scenery and the food are, the main reason most people come to Verbier is the skiing. And, trust me, it does not disappoint. I enjoyed some amazingly well-maintained runs. In Verbier, there are a wide range of options to choose from: mountains for skiers of different calibres, several ski itineraries and multiple off-piste areas for which I strongly recommend the services of a guide. The summits of Mont Gelé and Mont Fort and their mogul fields provide more adventurous types with a good challenge. Mont Fort is also accessible by gondola for those who prefer to simply admire the views which, on a clear day, reveal Mont Blanc in France and Zermatt’s Matterhorn. For the perfect powder day, the Bruson sector is the place to be. Protected by trees and less crowded, this area guarantees a fabulous day of skiing even when the weather is less than ideal.

The village of Verbier boasts an abundance of restaurants and boutiques for every taste and budget. The après-ski scene is also fantastic. I found a great spot on main street where I sat back and slowly sipped on a delicious local beer… but, for those who prefer, there’s hot chocolate too! After all, don’t forget that Switzerland is also known as the land of chocolate! Switzerland is a vacation spot that is sure to satisfy all of your senses! [ Marc Boucher ]

ALWAYS IN MY HEART

I

n addition to the sheer joy that comes from skiing at high altitudes 365 days a year and conquering 360 kilometres of trails in the highest ski area in the Alps, you’ll never cease to be blown away by the dozens of summits lining the Italian-Swiss border—the Matterhorn standing boldly at the center of it all. It was October 2016, when I was merely 16 years old, that I first set foot in this picturesque Swiss Alp town with the Quebec acrobatic ski team. The very first thing that struck me is the fact that Zermatt is a pedestrian-only village. This quiet and peaceful place makes it easy to leave the noise and chaos of the city far behind. The next morning, still not quite adjusted to the time difference, I was up quite early and treated to the first rays of sunshine hitting the Matterhorn. Off in the distance, I could hear the sound of bells, no doubt as cows made their way into the field. And, at precisely 7:00 a.m., the bells of the St. Mauritius Church ringing up a storm and officially announcing the start of a new day. Filling my lungs with the fresh morning air, a chocolate croissant breakfast in hand, I was ready to hit the slopes. The three lifts up to the summit of Glacier Paradise provide views that let you admire this mountain range in all its splendour. At the top, mountain climbers, hikers and skiers assemble to tackle this fabulous ski area, which is reduced to 21 kilometres for the summer season. The little piece of heaven is the perfect spot for various national teams to fine-tune their skills in preparation for the winter season of competition.

Above and beyond the quality of the skiing in these parts (often influenced by Mother Nature’s changing mood), the charming pedestrian village of Zermatt boasts the perfect blend of traditional and modern offerings. The 360-degree views from the center of town are indescribably breathtaking and the perfect place to immerse yourself in complete ski culture—as I have had the chance to do year after year. I hope you too will get the opportunity to experience it for yourself. Happy skiing! [ Philippe Marquis ]
