Since I started working at Gendron Travel, our ski program just keeps getting bigger and better. Ten years ago, no one would have believed that Japan would be one of our top destinations or that resorts would be offered together through such amazing offers as the Ikon Pass and Epic Pass! Affordable direct flights and the influence of the media have changed the game entirely. Much to their delight, people now have access to skiing pretty much anywhere in the world. Over the years, our sales volume has increased in every department. That’s what gives us such great buying power and the ability to offer the best rates on the market.

BANFF ALBERTA

By Caroline Samson, Group Leader

A national treasure

8

When contemplating where to go for their next ski holiday, skiers often fail to consider Banff as an option, even though this fabulous destination has got everything a skier needs for a dream vacation. Located in the heart of the Rockies, Banff features views that alone are worth the trip. Visitors can enjoy three major resorts located nearby—Lake Louise, Banff Sunshine and Mont Norquay—as well as countless other large resorts, which are easily accessible on a ski safari adventure.

Thanks to the region’s rather continental climate, the snow here is dry, light and of excellent quality. In addition to this, the season is incredibly long—it starts in November with the World Cup races and ends on Victoria Day weekend in May. Want to do more than just ski? No problem! Banff has tons of activities for you to choose from: ski touring, fat biking, snowshoeing… or relaxing in the Upper Hot Springs, which happens to be included in the price of your lift ticket! From a practical perspective, since Banff is in Canada, you won’t have to worry about the exchange rate and getting there is fast and easy on a direct flight to Calgary. Plus, Banff is known for its hospitality. The town is an absolute treasure characterized by quaint restaurants and cafés, a sports and mountain-oriented atmosphere, and a community that is thrilled to call Banff home and always eager to spread the joy among its visitors.

THE MOUNTAINS By Sophie Laplante, Ski Sales Director

The ultimate playground There are a million reasons people want to visit Whistler, and everyone has their own. Whistler and Blackcomb have enough terrain to keep skiers of all levels happy for a lifetime! The different areas are connected through the Peak 2 Peak gondola with 28 cabins making their way across the Fitzsimmons Valley 400 meters below. GENDRONSKI • 2019 | 2020

By Monyse Bélisle, Director of Ski Products and Marketing

A resort with personality! I have to admit that I used to be a little intimated by the idea of skiing at Revelstoke. After all, everything I had ever heard about the place led me to believe it was strictly reserved for experts. And, although I like to think I’m pretty good, I would classify myself more as an advanced skier than an expert one! Still, I decided to grab the bull by the horns and go for it. By the end of the first ski day, I had a whole new perspective. It was abundantly clear to me that Revelstoke had a tremendous variety of terrain that offered something for everyone. Revelstoke is a really great option for those who love steep terrain, glades and powder. And, it’s definitely true that the average skier here tends to be significantly more skilled than at other resorts. But I was still able to find what I was looking for on the long, groomed runs (the longest in North America in fact). The quality of the snow was amazing during my stay and I barely ever came across any icy patches. Even if the mountain only has three lifts (but very soon four!), the size and accessibility of the ski area is quite impressive. I personally loved the Ripper sector and its intermediate-advanced runs. You can also enjoy the lodge overlooking the North Bowl,

newly inaugurated this year. This season, the resort will add the new Stellar chair, providing access to 6 new runs for beginners and intermediate skiers at the top of the mountain.

RED MOUNTAIN BRITISH COLUMBIA

1

By Alexis de Gheldere, Outdoor Sports and Travel Journalist

eager to get away from commercial mega-resorts to enjoy a purer ski experience. On less crowded fixedgrip chairlifts, they take the time to chat with their neighbours while resting their legs, weary from their last run in the snow-filled glades.

Proudly independent PACKAGES While an increasing number of ski resorts have followed the trend of being acquired by bigger groups, a chosen few stand proudly on their own, affirming their independence. This is specifically the case for Red Mountain, a resort uncompromisingly focused on its local ski culture. Being self-sufficient, however, has in no way prevented them from expanding and developing operations. Over the last few years, the immense Grey Mountain sector was opened up to skiers thanks to a new quadruple chairlift. Next year, the Topping Chair will be added, reducing congestion on the Motherlode lift on those perfect post-snowstorm days. With all of these wonderful added extras, RED will no doubt continue to rank among the biggest resorts in North America for years to come.

WHITEWATER BRITISH COLUMBIA By Alexis de Gheldere, Outdoor Sports and Travel Journalist

Farther… and better Whitewater is a prime example of a destination where remoteness is directly proportionate to enjoyment. It may not be the highest mountain around or have the most intense vertical, but one thing it does have is mounds and mounds of snow. In fact, Whitewater beats almost all other resorts when it comes to snow accumulation—and that’s more than enough for any ski enthusiast!

Thanks to the incredible snowfall the resort enjoys, the glades are pure perfection, either on the Summit or Glory runs, where it makes up half of the terrain. Silver King is a great way to get things started (or to help you digest after a world-class meal at Coal Oil Johnny’s Pub). From Summit, you can make your way over to Powder Keg Bowl—ideal for skiers in search of wide-open spaces where they can lay down an infinite number of tracks.

SUN PEAKS BRITISH COLUMBIA

By Marc Boucher & Sylvie Desmarais, Group Leaders

Phenomenal slopeside village

Whenever someone mentions Sun Peaks, I close my eyes and fondly recall the magnificent panorama that unfolded before me as I made my way up the mountain on a splendidly sunny day. With 2,000 hours of sun every year, this resort certainly lives up to its name! Experts love Sun Peaks—the second biggest resort in Canada—for the glades and Crystal Bowl. As a couple with very different skiing abilities, we really enjoyed being able to hop on the same ski lift before making our way down different trails and meeting up a bit farther down at a cross roads. Here, skiing is accessible to everyone—even kids. Every effort is made to help ensure your experience is unforgettable. We even got to ski with Olympic Champion

Nancy Greene, an opportunity that is regularly offered to everyone at the resort. The Gendronski on-site representative took us on a discovery of the three peaks while respecting our ability levels. There’s also a variety of other great activities to enjoy, including a fondue dinner at the summit followed by a ski run downhill guided by headlamps. At the resort’s charming slopeside village, you’ll be treated to the hospitality of the locals and a variety of fine dining options. BIG WHITE BRITISH COLUMBIA

By Daniel Melançon, Special Contributor and Sports Commentator for Salut Bonjour

A challenge for everyone If you’re looking for a good ski-in/ski-out destination for your next stay in Western Canada, I highly recommend Big White in British Columbia.

22

Located a mere 30 minutes from the Kelowna airport, this particular resort is the perfect choice for families thanks to its pedestrian village, wide range of accommodations, restaurants, boutiques and lots of other services, many of which are designed for children.

Skiing is, of course, at the top of the list. Snow here is abundant and of very good quality. Once winter is well underway, the mountain peaks are invaded by endless snow ghosts (snow-covered trees that resemble strange-looking mummies). Big White caters to skiers of all levels—32% of its runs are mechanically groomed and 28% of the ski area is dedicated to advanced or expert skiers. Note that access to certain bowls can also be quite treacherous. During the 2018–2019 season, 3.9 million dollars were invested for the new Powder Chair, providing access to over 100 runs. Big White also added a new run called The General, a double black diamond run, which is a great option for more adventurous types. It’s crazy steep, incredibly narrow and lined with inviting glades on either side. What more could you ask for?

PANORAMA BRITISH COLUMBIA PACKAGES

By Christian Falardeau, Special Contributor

Absolute perfection! As a regular skier in Western Canada, last winter I decided to give Panorama Mountain Resort a try. This particular ski resort is easily accessible from the Calgary Airport (a three-hour drive in the mountains while you soak up incredible views). I have to admit that I now understand why Panorama was awarded both the title of Best New Terrain and Best High by Ski Canada Magazine in 2018. The resort also carries its name well—since the panorama is absolutely awe-inspiring. The trails are quite wide (and suited to all levels) and very well groomed. The terrain is so astonishingly immense that you’ll feel like you’re the only person on the mountain. There also plenty of areas and bowls for experts, not to mention the possibility of heliskiing, backcountry skiing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. With its ski-in/ski-out accommodations, Panorama was by far the best place I skied last winter. The resort was just perfect—from the warm welcome I received to the hot pools and everything in between. Next winter, I know where I’m heading! PANORAMA MOUNTAIN RESORT

SilverStar isn’t your average ski resort—it’s a multisport holiday getaway that is perfect for both sports enthusiasts and families. Not only does this place offer skiing, you can also enjoy cross-country skiing, an outdoor skating rink, tubing and snowshoeing accessible from the vibrant and colourful village. My first impression was that it was somewhat like an eastern canadian resort—but on steroids! It was much bigger than I had imagined and, it didn’t really have an alpine sector. During my stay, I was treated to mounds and mounds of snow which I thoroughly enjoyed in the sector serviced by the Powder Gulch lift. I had such a great time racing my friends downhill on the frontside of the mountain. And, to end things in style, I kicked back with a nice cold local brew at Long John’s Pub, smiling and thinking of my next visit.

No matter what you choose, it’s absolutely unique and amazing.

QUEBEC

MONT-SAINTE-ANNE

By Mario Daniel, Outdoor Sports Columnist and Group Leader and Alain Bisson, Journalist

Skiing in Quebec MONT-SAINTE-ANNE

Pure challenge, pure pleasure

36

There are certain mountains we wish we could just pick up and move closer to home so that we had the freedom to go as often as we want. Since it’s one of my very favourites though, distance doesn’t stop me from enjoying a little getaway to Mont-Sainte-Anne at least a couple of times every winter. In fact, it is generally the first and last place I ski every season. The resort features terrain suited to skiers of every calibre but also has some of the most challenging runs in Quebec, which gives everyone a chance to push themselves a little further. (M.D.)

LE MASSIF

SUTTON

LE MASSIF DE CHARLEVOIX Truly exceptional

For me, Le Massif de Charlevoix is the place where I’m always sure to have an insanely great time. Snowfall at Le Massif is generally quite abundant, the vertical drop is impressive and, of course, the view of the majestic Saint-Lawrence is divine! There is one particular thing, however, that I love most of all: except on a few specific weekends, there are virtually no crowds here and I always have the freedom to ski without restraint. (M.D.)

TREMBLANT

The best of the best Making it to the top of Ski Magazine’s list of the best resorts in Eastern North-America close to 20 times isn’t mere coincidence: Mont-Tremblant ski resort knows how to do things right. As the leading resort in the Laurentians, Tremblant is well known for its countless runs, superb snowmaking capacity and meticulous grooming. The addition of the 2018-19 Taïga and Dynagriffe glades has made us even happier, especially the day after a snowstorm. If you haven’t tried it yet, don’t wait a moment longer! (A.B.)

TREMBLANT

SUTTON

Nothing else compares For me, Sutton is the prime example of true love. This mountain—designed by skiers, for skiers—is beyond compare. Flat terrain is almost unheard of at Sutton. The variation is fun, challenging and sure to keep you on your toes. Plus, there are oodles of glades to choose from. And if all that isn’t enough, we promise you won’t find an atmosphere like this anywhere else. (M.D.)

ALPINE TOURING

1

Aby Paul sport worth discovering Dubrûle, Group Sales Director Ski touring is basically a version of alpine skiing where you climb up the mountain wearing skis with skins. “Climb up on my own” you say? “Why would I break my back when there’s a lift that can effortlessly take me to the top?” Take it from me, there’s certainly a reason for the sport’s fast-growing popularity! Alpine touring requires effort, but it’s pure freedom! Some people see it as a way of staying fit. Others view it as a little adventure. No matter what your motivation, it’s a great way to discover the mountain from a whole new angle, and far from the crowds. Once you’re at the top, you’ll discover terrain that is generally inaccessible by lift. Whether in backcountry or on groomed runs, the ultimate goal is the gorgeous powder that awaits you!

WHERE TO ENJOY ALPINE TOURING You can try alpine touring at several resorts close to home: Sutton, Tremblant and Le Massif de Charlevoix, for example. The Canadian Rockies also have lots of quality terrain: the Purcell Mountains and the Glacier National Park, located in the Columbia Mountains, are excellent destinations. Europe and Japan can also easily feature on this list!

CHIC-CHOCS Ask anyone who’s been and they’re sure to tell you that the Gaspé Peninsula is pure heaven! The Chic-Chocs Mountains offer completely wild terrain with the most incredible views—absolute paradise for alpine touring. The snow is abundant, and I guarantee you’ll be fabulously delighted by the whole experience, from accommodations to the guides to the terrain.

NISEKO

JAPAN

By Anne-Marie Corriveau & Martin Paré, Special Contributors

There’s no other snow like it

40

When it comes to powder skiing, Niseko has clearly earned a reputation as one of the best places for it! Although you are sure to be impressed by the quantity of snow at the resort, we promise that you’ll be absolutely blown away by the quality. This stuff is like solid air, and skiing on it is an incredible experience! Niseko is also popular for its wide variety of terrain, extensive backcountry territory and magnificent views of Mount Yotei. Plus, you can enjoy the luxury of ski-in/

ski-out accommodations at the Hilton Niseko, which also features a fabulous onsen, several restaurants and shuttles to Grand Hirafu village, where you’ll find great dining options, boutiques, Japanese breweries and more modest accommodations. To immerse yourself in Japanese culture even more, spend a few days in Otaru as you ski various local resorts and enjoy authentic encounters in a seaside town where sake, fish markets and culture are at the heart of the action. Add a few days in Tokyo and Narita to make this unique trip even more memorable. 2

SHIGA KOGEN

Snow, snow and more snow! The Okushiga Kogen ski resort is always a sheer delight. As you make your way up to the resort, climbing higher and higher in altitude, the snow gets more and more abundant until you finally reach the wide valley that is home to this amazing ski area. Although there are very few trails here (only 10, in fact), it’s the powder and sheer size of the backcountry sector that attracts skiers. There is something for everyone at Okushiga Kogen, from beginners to experts and everyone in between. You are sure to fall in love with the Downhill run, taking you on a 3-km (2,200 m) joyride and providing a challenge even for expert skiers. Accommodations are located right on the slopes, at 1,500 meters in altitude! This four-star mountain lodgestyle hotel provides great value for the money.

You have to ski it to believe it! If you’re looking for a destination that can offer great ski as well as an amazing cultural experience, I recommend Japan. The first thing I noticed is that the Japanese Alps are much smaller than their European counterparts. However, the main attraction here is the quantity—over 10 meters per year—and quality of the snow. Indeed, the snow is light and abundant in this powder lovers’ paradise! Of course, such things as culture and gastronomy can add to your vacation. When it comes to Japan, skiing is just the beginning of your adventure. Here, the people are friendly and welcoming. You can also enjoy great food such as handmade soba noodles and awesome sushi accompanied by sake and Japanese beer.

While you’re there, make sure you find the time to visit an onsen—traditional Japanese hot springs.

CHILE

By Sophie Laplante, Ski Sales Director

Summer snow If you’re looking to escape the summer heat, why not enjoy a getaway to Chile and enjoy every ski enthusiast’s dream—summer skiing! One major advantage when travelling to Chile is the fact that there’s no time difference, which means you can hit the slopes the very next morning. The three sectors of Valle Nevado, Farellones and Portillo have two very important things in common: fantastic snow and a dream mountain! The first of these—Valle Nevado—features the most modern facilities in the Southern hemisphere. This massive terrain in the Andes Mountains has glorious runs and a stunning backcountry area with the most amazingly light powder. Farellones, a tiny Chilean village, is located on a high-altitude plateau. From there, you can access the resorts of La Parva and El Colorado, which enjoy practically constant sun and a wide range of trails, set at 3,400 meters in altitude. Portillo is the

most well-known resort in the country. The terrain is phenomenal, the landscape is magnificent and the resort only accepts 450 customers per day, which means there are no crowds. And, during summer 2020, you can take advantage of a Gendronski exclusive—an on-site rep at Portillo!

By Mario Daniel, Outdoor Sports Enthusiast and Group Leader

Utah, anyone? There are so many options to choose from when planning a ski vacation, it can be easy to get lost in it all. At the same time, there are certain destinations that have much more to offer than others—and Utah happens to be one of those, for so many reasons. What’s Utah’s greatest asset, you ask? Definitely the snow! Last year, the region got a whopping 1,600 cm of snow—of exceptional quality, I might add. Another advantage is accessibility. Located more or less an hour from Salt Lake City, you’ll find 10 top-ranked ski resorts, making this a true skier’s paradise. Let me fill you in… Alta and Snowbird are probably the better-known resorts. They generally get more snow than any other resort in Utah. Alta is a resort that has managed to preserve its more natural character. Snowbird, for its part, is more modern and trendier, and is renowned for its wide variety of steep terrain. A third resort worth mentioning is Solitude. Well-known for its huge powder bowls, this is one place you’ll always be able to find a spot to lay down some nice, fresh tracks… and where you’ll never have to wait in line for the chairlift! 1 2

3 4

Situated just north of Salt Lake City, Powder Mountain and Snowbasin are two other resorts that are worth discovering. Snowbasin is an exceptional playground with unparalleled firstclass facilities. In fact, this is where the downhill and Super G events were held during the 2002 Olympic Games. Lesser-known Powder Mountain is the local skier’s (almost) secret hideaway. This resort is so big that it never feels crowded. This is one for the top of your list. Pick one, two, or combine several in a ski safari adventure!

PARK CITY and GENDRONSKI • 2019 | 2020

DEER VALLEY UTAH

1

By Mario Daniel, Outdoor Sports Enthusiast and Group Leader

Mountains and après-ski Salt Lake City is located a mere 45 minutes from the resorts of Deer Valley and Park City. Close by, Sundance, a town recognized around the world for its famous Sundance Film Festival, and for skiing. Acquisition of the Canyons sector by Vail Resorts resulted in the creation of Park City Resort—the largest ski area in the U.S., with a jaw-droping 334 runs. The majority of these are ideal for families and easily accessible to both beginner and intermediate skiers. Experts are also well-served by the Jupiter sector which provides a good, stiff challenge. Neighbouring Deer Valley Resort is equally as swanky. It’s the optimal choice for those seeking luxury and tranquility (a limited number of lift tickets are sold each day) while also catering to the entire family. If you’ve still got energy to spare after a day on the slopes, why not enjoy a little après-ski fun? The nightlife is must in Park City. Whether you choose an authentic Western bar, a quiet table for two in a wine bar or a club, this vibrant city is the place to be.

VERMONT KILLINGTON

JAY PEAK

PACKAGES

By Alain Chiasson, Group Leader

KILLINGTON When you think Killington, you think big. In fact, this mountain is located at an altitude just under 1,000 meters, making it one of the highest summits of the U.S. east coast. . What contributes most to this resort’s popularity is the fact that they are the first to kick off the season and the last to close it! It’s not uncommon here to see skiers indulge in their favourite sport as early as October and as late as early June. The mountain boasts four sides, including the famous Bear Mountain, where yearly amateur mogul competitions are held.

JAY PEAK Jay Peak Resort is one of the better-known U.S. destinations located close to home. In fact, it’s so close that, on a clear day, you can see it off in the distance when skiing on the mountains in the Eastern Townships. However, Jay is much more than your average ski resort. In addition to the slopeside accommodations, it features an indoor water park, a skating rink, climbing walls and a mountain with some pretty impressive vertical. There’s truly something for everyone here! From the moment you lay eyes on Jay, you’ll be amazed by the breathtaking views of the area and the wide array of runs, spread over two equally exciting summits. This mountain is a dream destination for both young and old with the most now in the north-east!

By Paul Dubrûle, Groups Sales Director

Spectacular Far from the big city, at the edge of famed Yellowstone Park, is Jackson Hole—a unique resort beyond compare. The moment you arrive at the airport (located 15 minutes from the village), you’ll instantly be blown away by the astounding beauty of the Teton Mountain Range. This is also the place where you’re bound to run into lots of fellow powder enthusiasts. Jackson Hole has, after all, earned a reputation as being a hub for expert skiers. People don’t come to this resort to enjoy groomed runs, but rather to tackle steep slopes, alpine bowls and easy-to-access glades. If the conditions are right, Corbet’s Couloir is one particular run you won’t want to miss. You might have to channel your inner daredevil before you hit this one, though. The entrance to Corbet’s is known for being quite the wild ride. I personally had the chance to try it once and have to admit I was a little shaken by the experience! No matter which run you choose, though, Jackson Hole has some of the best around and is delightfully uncrowded when compared to other U.S. resorts. At the end of the day, in keeping with tradition, locals and tourists gather to enjoy some après-ski fun and swap stories of the day’s exploits at the popular Mangy Moose bar. In addition to its spectacular mountain, Jackson Hole has earned a reputation for its western-style architecture and fabulous atmosphere. Plus, about an hour’s drive away, there’s a second fabulous resort you might consider adding to your itinerary for a day—Grand Targhee. Skiing, après-ski, and everything in between—Jackson Hole is always a rootin’ tootin’ good time! Yee-haw! 3

BIG

SKY MONTANA

1

By Roger Laroche, Editor of Carnet du ski and Group Leader

Colossal and peaceful Long considered the biggest ski resort in the U.S., Big Sky lost its title a few years ago following the expansion of Park City in Utah. It does, however, remain the second biggest, on par with Vail in Colorado. Statistics aside, Big Sky still feels massive, thanks mostly to the immense vistas available at every angle. Located near the world-famous Yellowstone Park, Big Sky has earned a reputation for small crowds. In fact, Big Sky is much less crowded than Park City or Vail, leaving skiers with the impression that they are one of the privileged few to access this enormous resort.

Discover Big Sky in combination with Jackson Hole in Wyoming, located just a few hours away—it’s a great 2 for 1 combo! No matter what you choose, the airports are just a stone’s throw away, eliminating the need for long transfers.

VAIL and BRECKENRIDGE COLORADO

By Alain Bisson, Journalist

Pure joy—guaranteed! How do you feel when someone mentions Vail? Does it stir up feelings of excitement in your skier’s heart? What about Breckenridge? Does it make you want to drop everything and run off on a skiing getaway? I couldn’t agree with you more!

VAIL

52

Its colossal ski area makes it one of the top resorts in North America. The front side offers a variety of groomed runs which are sure to tire out your legs before you can even cover half of it. My favourite, however,

have to be the Back Bowls and Blue Sky Basin. These particular options can be accessed by making your way to the other side from the summit. The Mongolia, Siberia and China Bowls are absolutely amazing on powder days or during massive spring snowstorms. With all that these immense alpine bowls have to offer, the descents I enjoyed here will forever remain etched in my memory. Make sure you also try the far-off Blue Sky Basin. It’s sure to be one of the highlights of your trip. 2

BRECKENRIDGE Breckenridge is another great option. With a completely different vibe, it’s a great complement or alternative to Vail. A word of warning, though— you definitely want to keep the altitude in mind. This magnificent old mining town sits at a little under 3,000 meters! That’s crazy high! So, expect to be a little out of breath—and not only because the amazing scenery and colossal ski area leaves you breathless! This resort features the highest lift in North America—the Imperial Express—which peaks at 3,913 meters. Once at the top, if you aren’t too overwhelmed by the beauty, climb a few meters higher up to the summit of Peak 8 where you can revel in Lake Chutes. Pure joy, guaranteed!

CHAMONIX FRANCE

DISCOVER OUR GROUP DEPARTURE ON PAGE 65.

By Kevin Gasior, Special Contributor

The culture of skiing at its very best This iconic mountain community has ranked among my top dream destinations since I started watching ski movies in the 80s. Chamonix is the birthplace of extreme skiing and one of the oldest cities in Europe. You can literally feel the history come alive as you walk down the streets dominated by Mont Blanc, whose summit stands at an impressive 4,800 meters. My greatest fear was that Chamonix would turn out to be a little overrated. However, I am happy to report that, thanks in part to the 170 km of groomed runs, this skier’s paradise far exceeded my expectations. Add the possibility of unmarked trails and you have enough terrain to last a lifetime!

56

In Chamonix, skiing seemingly permeates every aspect of life. In this part of the world, it takes a university degree to become a ski instructor, patroller or guide.

In fact, the national mountain sports school—École nationale des sports de montagne—is located right in the heart of Chamonix. My day at Grands Montets (currently under reconstruction) was definitely one of the best ski experiences I’ve ever had. On a typical day, you’ll enjoy making your way down a constant incline, cutting through the glades and stopping to enjoy a gourmet lunch in the forest. During my visit, my ski instructor took time to sit down with us and flip through the pages of a history book as she pointed out pictures of her father and grandfather. It added a special human touch to the whole experience and made us feel like we were part of something quite special. Come evening, you can partake in some après-ski entertainment in the area’s bars and restaurants. The atmosphere is unlike anything else, and the fun doesn’t stop until very late at night! On your day off from skiing, make your way up the rack and pinion railway to Montenvers and the famous Mer de Glace. Take the Aiguille du Midi cable car to the top of Mont Blanc. More adventurous types might want to try a 20-km ski excursion through Vallée Blanche. Unique experiences are what make a vacation memorable, and Chamonix has plenty to ensure your ski holiday is the best one yet!

3 VALLÉES FRANCE

By Marc Boucher & Sylvie Desmarais, Group Leaders

Les Menuires SIMPLY UNFORGETTABLE

Nestled in the fabulous Savoie area, Les Menuires resort is incredibly unique—thanks in part to its geographical location. Located in the heart of 3 Vallées, it happens to be one of the most affordable resorts in this vast ski area, both in terms of accommodations and dining. In addition to this, access to the slopes is as easy as can be using the lifts, located mere steps away from the hotels.

58

From the summit of La Masse, you’ll be treated to the most jaw-dropping panorama of the Alps and an unforgettable descent that’s perfect for skiers of all levels. Les Menuires also boasts an amazing variety of slopes, accessible powder and exceptional backcountry skiing.

Brides-les-Bains SIMPLY SENSATIONAL

This particular destination, located at the base of the immense 3 Vallées ski area, is ideal for those seeking wide, open spaces, incredibly high peaks and absolutely astounding panoramas. The Olympe gondola takes skiers up to Méribel, which opens up onto this vast ski area. Named for its esteemed XIXth-century spa resort, Brides-les-Bains experienced a resurgence following the Albertville Olympics in 1992. Although Brides-les-Bains is a rather quiet town that is perfect for those whose budget is a little tighter, there are still plenty of après-ski options: restaurants, bars and clubs are among the many ways you can wrap up a day on the slopes. If a little relaxation is more what you’re looking for, you can always head to the spa!

Val Thorens Staying at Val Thorens made me feel like I had front row seats of the Alps. The terrain was so incredibly vast, there were ski trails literally everywhere I looked. If you plan to go, take my advice and hire a guide for your first day. There’s no one better suited to point out the best sectors for your level. I also recommend enjoying a little après-ski downtime with an Apérol Spritz at La Folie Douce followed by a Savoyard fondue in town and a little glass of Génépi to finish things off. If you’re the party type, make your way over to Rue de la soif (loosely translated as Thirsty Street), lined with bars and pubs! Val Thorens is also an excellent destination if you’re hoping to extend the ski season into late April.

VAL D'ISERE TIGNES FRANCE AND

1

By Alain Chiasson, Group Leader, and Jean-Christophe Nadeau, Former Member of the Quebec freestyle skiing team (Top 10 in Canada)

A skier's paradise Every destination is unique, but if you’re truly looking to take it up a notch, Europe is definitely one of your best options. Espace Killy, near the Italian border, combines the ski areas of Val d’Isère and Tignes. Val d’Isère is sure to be love at first sight: the picturesque village, the restaurants, and a resort so big that a week won’t be enough to cover all of the territory offered to you. Come dive into the adventure that is Val d’Isère, and make memories that last a lifetime! (A.C.) Same goes for Tignes. It is one of these places that will leave you positively speechless the moment you lay eyes on it. While the surroundings always take my breath away, what always impresses me the most is that, despite Tignes’s small size, there’s always a wide range of activities for you to choose from. Skiing is the very heart and soul of Tignes.

60

If the Grande Motte Glacier is accessible during your stay (weather dependent), make sure you go! I promise you won’t regret it! (J-C.N.)

Why choose Austria? There are so many reasons to choose Austria for your next ski vacation… let’s name a few. The colossal ski area connecting Lech and St. Anton where tradition meets ultra-modern lifts and sophisticated restaurants, bars and hotels. The superb resort town of Kitzbühel, its Streif and the many trails and sectors for those who like things a little tamer. The skiers’ paradise of Sölden where the ski season is long and the terrain is magnificent. The area also features one of the biggest glacier areas in Austria and close to 150 km of groomed slopes. And, Innsbruck’s Olympic city featuring a medieval Old Town, colourful houses and close to numerous major ski resorts. Resort towns and cities invest enormous sums to ensure they can provide the very best facilities, including heated eight-person chairlifts which are commonplace in this part of the world!

VERBIER SWITZERLAND

By Roger Laroche, Editor of Carnet du ski and Group Leader

True alpine spirit I’ve been all over the world in search of the best skiing around, and the destination that most often comes to mind as offering some of the best is always Verbier/4 Vallées. Renowned as Switzerland’s largest ski area, it boasts perfect conditions on over 400 km of trails serviced by 90 lifts. And, one cannot overlook the added value of the impeccable authentic cuisine provided by Verbier’s mountain restaurants. A week spent in Verbier is jam-packed with everything skiers are looking for, whether they are laid-back or the more daring type—and every day is different. At the start of your stay, you’ll probably want to explore different parts of the resort. It takes a 55-km return trip to make your way through the various interrelated sectors, which you can discover both on the trails and at the table thanks to the dozen or so mountain restaurants that serve up the perfect dishes to sustain and satisfy even the most discerning foodies.

62

While it’s clear that a successful ski vacation is nothing without great skiing, the importance of the alpine atmosphere that accompanies it cannot be denied. Thankfully, Verbier has it all—which makes it a coveted destination everyone wants to go back to again and again.

ZERMATT GENDRONSKI • 2019 | 2020

SWITZERLAND

The small cross streets are lined with quaint wooden homes aged by hundreds of years of alpine air. By Michel Côté, Group Leader

Under the gaze of the Matterhorn Zermatt is a unique, historical village tucked away in a narrow valley under the watchful eye of the famous Matterhorn, the third of the Alp’s summits. In 2019, a new lift was inaugurated for the Klein Matterhorn. The speedy Matterhorn Glacier Ride, with 35 seats, brings skiers to the summit of the resort and the transit to Italy. In Switzerland, the summits to the east of the village provide an unbelievable view of the Matterhorn. To the south, the glaciers are ideal for skiing on wide runs at the foot of Klein Matterhorn. On the Italian side, both bowls—one leading to the village of Breuil-Cervinia and the other to Valtournenche—are known for their wide, gradually sloping trails and off-piste areas. In the village of Zermatt, you can make your way down Bahnhofstrasse and explore its high-end boutiques.

After 25 years of skiing in the Alps, I can easily say that Zermatt has some of the most awe-inspiring scenery you’ll ever see. Don’t miss out on this phenomenal destination!

Less than 45 days before departure: total cost of package, including all taxes.

CUSTOMER’S RESPONSIBILITY The customer is responsible for informing the travel agent of any condition (physical, health, pregnancy, etc.) that may restrict their ability to travel in any way whatsoever as stipulated in Article 228 of the LPC. INCREASE IN PRICE AND COSTS In the event of an increase in taxes, royalties or other fees authorized by a recognized public authority, the indicated prices are subject to change. Gendron Travel reserves the right to increase fees and prices as a result of fluctuations in the exchange rate, fuel costs, taxes and other applicable fees. Should the price increase following a fuel surcharge imposed by the carrier or an increase in the exchange rate (if the exchange rate applicable 45 days before provision of services has increased more than 5% since the date of contract signing; and/or if the increase in price, without taking the QST and GST into consideration, is equal to or higher than 7% of the price of services), the customer may cancel said services (with full and immediate refund of services) or opt for a substitute offer of similar services; if the price of these similar services is higher than those originally reserved, the customer will be required to pay for the price difference. No price increase may occur within 30 days before provision of services. Any price reduction resulting from a promotion of a decision made by Gendron Travel applies to new reservations only. For the most recent prices, please contact one of our travel consultants. No changes will be brought to previously made reservations. RESPONSIBILITY Gendron Travel is responsible for offering all of the services described on its Web site and in the present magazine. If, for any reason whatsoever, the stipulated services cannot be offered, Gendron Travel will offer the customer services of a comparable nature. Gendron Travel reserves the right to cancel or modify a trip at any time. The passenger waives all claims of any nature or any kind against Gendron Travel for loss, theft, accidents or damage. Gendron Travel will not be held liable for the closing of facilities, strikes, bankruptcies, political crises, terrorist attacks, bad weather, the quality of services provided by suppliers or overselling by the latter, the traveler’s failure to obtain all necessary travel documents, flight delays or any other circumstance or condition beyond Gendron Travel’s control that may prevent the normal and anticipated activities of the trip. RESERVATION CHANGES Fees will apply for any changes made (room type, hotel, car rental, lift tickets and transfers). Fees are as follows: more than 45 days before travel start date, modification fees are $25 per person or any amount charged by the hotel, carrier or any other supplier involved in your reservation if said amount is higher than $25 per person. 45 days or less before your departure date, Gendron Travel reserves the right to refuse certain changes. Generally speaking, fees will always be charged for any changes made. Name or date changes will be considered a cancellation (please refer to the paragraph on Cancellation Fees for more information). GUIDED GROUP TRIPS If the minimum number of passengers required for any of the group trips advertised in this magazine is not attained, Gendron Travel reserves the right to cancel the trip. If, however, the customer would still like to take the trip on his own, the package cost may be higher or lower depending on the new price in effect at that particular time. If the trip is to be cancelled for the reasons stated above and the customer chooses not to travel on his own, he will be reimbursed in full. PASSPORT A valid Canadian passport is your only proof of Canadian citizenship and is required any time you travel outside of the country. Some countries require that your passport be valid for 6 months beyond your date of entry. FLIGHTS AND AIR CARRIERS Changes: Flights are conducted in accordance with the applicable tariff of the air carrier and pursuant to the regulations set out by the Canadian Transportation Agency. Consolidations and changes in the published schedule, aircraft type, days of operation, air carrier providing air transportation and flight itinerary may be undertaken at any time and without prior notice, in accordance with the air carrier’s tariff. Schedule check and connecting flights: Flight schedules, even when provided on a ticket, are tentative and are therefore subject to change without notice. Changes may occur for a number of reasons, often beyond the control of the air carrier or Gendron Travel. Any customer who has purchased a package or flight with Gendron Travel is entirely responsible for verifying his flight schedule directly with the air carrier in the 24-hour period immediately prior to the departure and return date. Connecting flights are reserved

at the customer’s risk and customers are entirely responsible for ensuring that they have adequate time to reach and board their connecting flight. Gendron Travel will not be held liable for any changes made to flight schedules or missed flight connections, including any incidental or consequential damages or any other additional fees (most notably loss of revenue or salary, loss of vacation days or any other fees) incurred as a result of the foregoing. Airport Check-in: Gendron Travel recommends that customers arrive at the air carrier airport check-in counter at least three (3) hours before their scheduled departure time, failing which their reservation may be cancelled and their seat may be assigned to another customer, with no right of recourse. Baggage: Air carriers set individual rules and regulations regarding baggage number, weight and size. Customers are responsible for consulting their travel agent or air carrier for information on the applicable restrictions and applicable fees for their particular air carrier. Other air carrier conditions and limitations of liability: The limits of the air carrier’s liability with relation to the loss of and damage to baggage is established by the provisions of the Montreal Convention or the Warsaw Convention, depending on the case, by the applicable tariffs of the air carrier, as well as the contract appearing on the passenger ticket, the boarding pass and baggage check receipt, and any government regulations. Once submitted to and approved by the federal authorities, any amendment or change to the air carrier’s general terms and conditions of carriage are effective immediately, without additional public notification. Plane tickets that remain unused, in whole or in part, on the indicated dates, will not be honored for a subsequent flight or reimbursed. Seat assignment: Unless already pre-assigned, aircraft seating is assigned by staff at the air carrier’s airport check-in counter. Certain fees not included as part of the package price may be charged directly by the air carrier. TRAVEL DOCUMENTS A valid Canadian passport is your only proof of Canadian citizenship and is required any time you travel outside of the country. Some countries require that your passport be valid for 6 months beyond your date of entry. Switzerland requires 3-month validity after your date of return (this policy is also applicable when transferring in Geneva for a French destination). It is the customer’s responsibility to obtain, at his own cost, all documents required by relevant government authorities and to adhere to all applicable laws. Certain countries can require that a visa be obtained from the Embassy (at the customer’s cost). A parent travelling alone with a child under the age of 18 may be required to show written notarized consent signed by the other parent authorizing said travel. The customer is responsible for asking his travel agent about all required travel documents and ensuring that he has them in his possession before his departure. The carrier and any competent authority may refuse to allow the customer to board if he does not have all of the required documents in his possession. In this case, the customer has no recourse and will not be reimbursed. Gendron Travel will not be held liable for the information or assistance provided by any of its employees with regards to required travel documents or compliance with the law in this respect, regardless of whether this information was provided verbally, in writing or by any other means. The customer may also be refused entry into a country even if he has all of the required travel documents in his possession. Gendron Travel will in no way be held liable for the consequences suffered by any customer who does not possess the required documents or who fails to comply with any given applicable law. It is essential that you verify all of the travel documents you have received in order to ensure that they correspond exactly to the reservations you have made. Should you notice an error in any document you receive, or should you have any questions pertaining to your departure or your trip, please consult your travel agent. Departure tax and tourist card: Depending on your destination, you may be required to pay a departure tax and/or tourist card immediately on site. IDENTITY PROTECTION Protecting our customers’ identity is a priority for us at Gendron Travel. We only request information needed for customer files and for ensuring good communication and ease of operations. We do not sell our customer databases or share any personal information whatsoever without prior consent. We also have security systems used to protect all of the personal information contained within our computer system. COMMENTS AND CLAIMS Gendron Travel will attempt to resolve any problems you encounter during your stay if we are advised of said problem. Please contact your destination representative or travel consultant as soon as possible so we can process your request

(by email or phone). If the problem in question cannot be resolved on site, please provide us with all necessary details as quickly as possible after returning from your trip. All complaints must be provided to your consultant in writing to ensure they are processed in a timely manner. SPECIAL REQUESTS FOR YOUR HOTEL STAY Special requests such as room location and bed size preference must be communicated at the time of reservation. Gendron Travel will forward your request to the hotel but cannot guarantee that it will be honored. Gendron Travel will not be held liable if certain requests are not respected. GIFT CERTIFICATES/TRAVEL CREDITS Want to give one as a gift? Nothing could be easier. Simply contact one of our travel agents. To use a gift certificate or travel voucher, simply provide the original copy when making your reservation so that your travel agent can include it in your customer file. No reservation or price reduction will be applied unless your travel agent has the original gift certificate or travel voucher in hand. Gift certificates are non-transferable and have no cash value. Travel vouchers (unless otherwise indicated) are applicable for Gendron Travel’s exclusive packages (skiing, golfing, biking and *sun destinations). They are not applicable to group departures and are non-transferable and have no cash value. *Sun destinations: Air Transat Vacations, Air Canada Vacations, TMR, Sunwing or other wholesalers independent from Gendron Travel are excluded. CANNABIS CONSUMPTION AND TRANSPORT Under section 21 of the Cannabis Act and amending various road safety provisions, Gendron Travel prohibits the possession and use of cannabis on agency premises and in vehicles. Upon presentation of a medical prescription, we will authorize the transport but not the consumption of cannabis in our vehicles. Note that the laws on possession and use of cannabis at destination apply and that clients are responsible for learning about the laws at destination. Gendron Travel is not responsible for the consequences for customers who would transport cannabis for medical purposes to destination. Illegal possession of cannabis while travelling could result in eviction of clients without reimbursement. PARKING AT THE AIRPORT We offer our customers preferential rates when parking at YUL Montréal-Trudeau International airport’s AeroParc, Multi-level and Valet parking spaces for the duration of their stay, for every room booked. Certain conditions apply (minimum package cost required). Visit our Web site at www. gendrongolf.com for more information.
