FROM MOROCCAN SOUKS TO THE SAHARA DESERT Morocco, with its rich and interesting culture, should be high on everyone’s travel list. Centuries of foreign trade, invasion and dynastic rule have given Morocco the many different cultural influences that are evident in today's society. From the Phoenicians who entered Morocco in the 6th century BC, and the Roman occupation from about 40 AD to the formation of Islamic Morocco and the influence of Europeans in the years after, Morocco has evolved with the rise and fall of empires.
4
After the exotic hustle and bustle of Morocco, the islands off Africa’s west coast offer a complete change. The upland villages and volcanic landscapes of Gran Canaria are little known jewels of this charming island. Conquered by the Spanish in the fifteenth century and fought over by the Dutch and British, it was here, during a battle in 1797, that Lord Nelson lost his right arm. Another English naval hero features in the history of the Cape Verde Islands as, in 1585, Sir Francis Drake twice attacked the Portuguese forces at Ribeira Grande, the island’s capital. Portugal had occupied the previously uninhabited Cape Verde in the fifteenth century and they became an important link in the transatlantic slave trade.
CROSSING THE LINE Situated just north of the equator off the coast of Gabon, Sao Tome and Principe is a Portuguese-speaking island nation in the Gulf of Guinea. The sublime laid-back tempo of the islands is enhanced by a wealth of natural attractions: miles of palmfringed beaches, large areas of rainforest, mellow fishing villages and excellent birdlife. You can also experience a true island paradise with a beach party on the wonderfully named Bom Bom Island. With its pristine beaches and crystal clear waters, this tiny islet on the northern shore of the volcanic island of Principe is a hidden gem.
As Aegean Odyssey sails south, she passes over the Equator and this event will be marked – as maritime tradition demands – by the Crossing the Line Ceremony.
THE SKELETON COAST TO SOUTH AFRICA GAME RESERVES
MARITIME TRADITIONS – SOUTH TO THE CAPE OF GOOD HOPE As Aegean Odyssey makes its way south to Cape Town, it is the perfect time to remember one of the great companies from the Golden Age of shipping. Union-Castle operated a fleet of passenger liners and cargo ships between Europe and South Africa from 1900 to 1977. Some of the most elegant ships ever built made up Union-Castle’s fleet and they were well known for the lavender-hulled liners with red funnels topped in black. Union-Castle ran on a very strict timetable: every Thursday at 4pm one of their Royal Mail ships would leave Southampton bound for Cape Town and at the same time, a Union-Castle Royal Mail Ship would leave Cape Town bound for Southampton. Painting by Robert G. Lloyd
Back on the mainland and the remarkable country of Namibia. With its unique landscapes and turbulent colonial history, Namibia is one of Africa’s “must-see” destinations. This reputation will be confirmed at both your Namibian destinations: Walvis Bay on the Skeleton Coast with its incredible lagoon and unique marine life and the German colonial port of Luderitz sandwiched between the barren Namib Desert and the windswept South Atlantic coast. Although we have become somewhat accustomed to seeing Africa's magnificent wildlife on our televisions, there is nothing comparable to coming face-to-face with one of the savannah's "Big Five" (lion, Cape buffalo, elephant, leopard and rhinoceros). In South Africa, you will have the opportunity to come up close to these wonderful animals with safaris in three of the country’s top game parks (see page 27). South Africa also boasts many other magnificent attractions including the charms of Cape Town and the beautiful Garden Route.
The location of Cape Town, known in South Africa as the Mother City, is one of the world’s great sights with its backdrop of the majestic Table Mountain and its stunning South Atlantic coast. It is a place of great creativity, culture and history. It is also famous for its proximity to the marvellous vineyards of the Stellenbosch Valley and the Cape Winelands region. Another nearby marvel is the Garden Route which runs along the coast where the mighty Atlantic and Indian oceans meet and features a unique landscape of native flora. In this remarkable country you will also visit Durban and the nearby Zulu nation. Here you will not only be guided through the fascinating but bloody history of this most famous of African peoples but also experience their vibrant culture.

ISLANDS OF THE INDIAN OCEAN On this leg of the cruise, Aegean Odyssey calls at magical tropical islands: French Mayotte in the Comoros and Mahe, Praslin and La Digue in the Seychelles. Here you will find the finest white sandy beaches in the Indian Ocean, warm waters and beautiful colonial architecture. The perfect places to slow down and relax.
LANDS OF WONDERS Southeast Asia and India are two of the world's most popular tourist destinations, and for good reasons.
6
Many of the countries here have it all: a tropical climate – warm all year round, fascinating culture, wonderful food and charming people. It is also home to dynamic cities such as Singapore and natural wonders including the Phi Phi Islands in Thailand. It’s rich history has left a legacy of breathtaking architectural and artistic treasures. You will visit massive ancient temples, elegant mosques, historic churches and mysterious ruins – the diverse nature of Asia’s history is forever on display.
INDIA: EMPERORS AND EMPIRE On the land tour of the fabulous Golden Triangle in India the time of the Moghul emperors and the Age of Empire will grasp your attention. The great monuments from these times including the forts and palaces of Jaipur, Lutyen’s great monuments of the British Raj in Delhi and, of course, the Taj Mahal in Agra will inspire and delight. The magnificent sites of the Indian Subcontinent have been attracting travellers for centuries but another Asian country that is home to equally marvellous buildings, temples and
monuments has only recently begun to open up to visitors from the west. Burma, or Myanmar as it is now known, is rapidly becoming one of the most desired of destinations and with good reason.
BURMA: A WORLD APART ‘This is Burma’, wrote Rudyard Kipling. ‘It is quite unlike any place you know about.’ How right he was: more than a century later Myanmar remains a world apart. Visitors to Burma will discover a place where people are still attired in traditional
dress and that feels like a corner of Asia that has changed little since British colonial times. It’s also a country of many incredible sites such as the 4,000 sacred stupas (sacred Buddhist mounds) scattered across the plains of Bagan and the golden Shwedagon pagoda in Yangon, formerly Rangoon. This is a truly remarkable place where holy men are still revered and western technology has yet to dominate. It is these great buildings and monuments that have captivated visitors to Asia for centuries.
TAJ MAHAL: THE GREATEST LOVE STORY Shah Jahan was the son of Jehangir, the fourth Mughal emperor of India and the grandson of Akbar the Great. In 1612 he married the Persian princess Mumtaz Mahal and on becoming Emperor in 1628 bestowed his beloved wife with the title of Mumtaz Mahal, "Jewel of the Palace." In 1631, Mumtaz Mahal died in childbirth and Shah Jahan promised her that he would never remarry and would build the richest mausoleum ever seen over her grave. He proved to be a man of his word and it took 22 years and the labour of 22,000 workers to construct the monument. When Shah Jahan died in 1666, his body was placed in a tomb next to the tomb of Mumtaz Mahal and this magnificent monument came to be known as "Taj Mahal."

fascinating history and cultures
TREASURES OF THE RED SEA The extraordinary achievements of man from very different ages are the highlights of this leg of the voyage. As the historian Paul Johnson tells us, the Egyptians “were the first people on earth to create a nation-state. This state served as the framework of a culture of extraordinary strength, assurance and durability which lasted for 3,000 years and which retained almost to the end its now unmistakable purity of style. In the Egypt of antiquity, state, religion and culture formed an indisputable unity.” The great legacy of this most fascinating of cultures comes to life as

you visit Luxor – the ancient city of Thebes, with its vast temple complex and the pharaonic tombs of the Valley of the Kings. As well as the city of Petra, Jordan is home to some of the most extensive and well-preserved Graeco-Roman ruins at Jerash.
TRANSIT THE SUEZ CANAL And then there is the more modern marvel of the Suez Canal. Opened in November 1869 after 10 years of construction, the 120-mile long canal allows ships to travel between Europe and Asia without navigating around
THE LAND OF WHALEBONES AND SHIPWRECKS The Skeleton Coast is the northern part of the Atlantic coast of Namibia and South Angola. The Bushmen of the Namibian interior called the region "The Land God Made in Anger", while Portuguese sailors once referred to it as "The Gates of Hell". The name “Skeleton Coast” was coined by John Henry Marsh as the title for the book he wrote chronicling the shipwreck of the British cargo liner Dunedin Star that ran aground here in November 1942. Since the book was first published in 1944 it has become so well known that the coast is now generally referred to as the Skeleton Coast and is given that as its official name on most maps today.
Africa and thereby reducing the sea voyage distance between Europe and India by about 4,300 miles. Today, sailing through the Suez is an awe-inspiring experience and our transit of the canal will be through the daytime hours – one of the world’s greatest travel adventures.
CLASSICAL CIVILISATIONS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN AND AEGEAN With over 6,000 miles of coastline surrounding relatively tranquil seas, with numerous natural harbours and hundreds of habitable islands, the Mediterranean and Aegean provide the perfect environment for the evolution
of complex patterns of trade and the communication of ideas. These conditions led to an unparalled explosion of human creativity and the birth of the great civilisations of antiquity. It is the legacy of these great cultures that you will explore as Aegean Odyssy reaches the final leg of its winter programme. Highlights include the fantastic Graeco-Roman cities of Ephesus and Aphrodisias in Turkey, the elegance of the ruins on the sacred island of Delos and, as a marvellous treat to conclude this special voyage, the breathtaking spectacle of the Acropolis in Athens.

voyages to antiquity ~
our philosophy THE BENEFITS OF SMALL-SHIP CRUISING
OUTSTANDING ITINERARIES
CELEBRATED GUEST SPEAKERS ON BOARD
In contrast to the massive vessels cruising to and from the major ports of the world's seas, we have a small ship adapted for island and coastal cruising. This means that Aegean Odyssey can visit less crowded harbours and sail closer to the coast enabling you to appreciate the magical views. Another benefit of our ship’s size is that it is able to navigate river passages and this allows us to berth right in the heart of Yangon (Rangoon) in Burma. As we carry only an average of 350 passengers, our ship is ideal for those who do not enjoy travelling around with hordes of people. Its public spaces are ideal for socialising and enjoying intimate cocktail parties and events. If you like to wander around beautiful islands and explore ancient sites that are inaccessible to others, then Aegean Odyssey is the ideal ship for you.
All our voyages have been meticulously planned by the Voyages to Antiquity staff and noted historians. Our many years of experience tells us that combining the best of cruising and land tours is the ideal way to explore these fascinating sites and get the most value from your chosen itinerary.
The guest speakers who accompany you on the cruise are all first class. They have been carefully selected for their knowledge of the areas and their ability to bring to life the history of the remarkable civilisations and cultures of the regions we visit.
This year we are delighted to include some brand new itineraries and destinations. These include Morocco, Madeira, the fascinating Comoros, the Canary Islands and the unforgettable scenery of Namibia. Perhaps our most exciting addition is South Africa. Here we will be visiting the delightful city of Cape Town, travelling the beautiful Garden Route and going on safari in three of the countries best game reserves.
Among those who will be joining us are David Price-Williams, an expert on Africa; Robert Gordon, retired Ambassador to Burma; and Denise Heywood who specialises in the art and culture of Southeast Asia. Assisting the main speakers aboard ship and on land will be our team of young and keen classical history graduates. They will be on hand to answer your questions and assist the guides on sightseeing trips.
11
A RELAXED ATMOSPHERE ON BOARD Evenings on board There will be a string trio, pianist and vocalist, casual dancing before and after dinner, and there will also be performances by some of the best local entertainment. No casino or disco. The officers’ introductory cocktail party is casual without the usual formalities. Parties and special events From beach parties on Bom Bom Island and the Maldives to wine tastings in South Africa and informal cocktail parties during days at sea, throughout your cruise there will be many opportunities to socialise with your fellow passengers and meet the crew. Dress code Suggestions for what to wear during nights and evenings aboard are found in the Essential Travel Information booklet we send with your travel documents. Resort casual is the general recommendation, however, there may be occasions where a jacket for men and cocktail attire for ladies may be worn.
SHORE EXCURSIONS INCLUDED IN YOUR FARE Wines included with dinner on board We do not think it is appropriate to serve dinner without wine, so wine (or beer and soft drinks) is included at dinner. Other vintages are available at reasonable prices. A good night’s sleep We place particular importance on the standard of bedding in cabins irrespective of category. Fine duvets, covers and sheets, ample soft pillows and quality towels can be expected and your cabin steward is always ready to make changes if you desire. Language on board The ship’s language is English and you can expect fellow passengers to be from Australia, New Zealand, UK, US and Canada, with a sprinkling of enthusiasts from Europe and the Far East. Technology We ask that mobile phones and laptops be used discreetly in the interest of fellow passengers. The internet room is always open for those who cannot resist contact with the outside world. Children Our cruises are destination focused and not designed for children under the age of 12. Tipping Always a difficult subject. We have decided to include all tips to cabin stewards and restaurant staff. You may wish to show your appreciation to individuals offering exceptional service (totally optional).
12
Our pre- and post-cruise land stays allow you not only to relax after a long flight but also to experience some of the world’s most vibrant and exciting cities. These stays also allow us to include some of the truly fascinating sights not easily accessible from ports of call such as the spectacular “Golden Triangle” excursion – including the Taj Mahal – in India, the extended stay in the vibrant city of Singapore, the tour of the best of Morocco and a journey through Jordan from Petra to the capital, Amman (see page 14). Included Shore Excursions and wildlife safaris
A mixture of full-day or half-day shore excursions is included in all our ports of call. When the major sightseeing experience requires a full day excursion such as Kandy in Colombo, the ancient city of Aphrodisias in Turkey, and some of our South African safaris, we have included it.
On occasion, we will also offer prebookable optional excursions, some with limited capacity as flights are involved. These include the Burmese royal capital of Mandalay and the magnificent pagodas of Bagan from Yangon (Rangoon). These are offered as alternatives to the included excursion and are available at advantageous prices. Individual QuietVox headsets
On all shore excursions, the expert guides will share their knowledge with the group using QuietVox. Through your individual headset, these devices allow you to hear the tour leader clearly even at the busiest sites. Voyages to Antiquity was one of the first cruise lines to operate this service. We trust this means that you won’t miss a thing and your visits to these wonderful places will be as memorable and exciting as possible.
QUALITY HOTELS ASHORE Voyages to Antiquity places great emphasis on the quality of accommodation ashore. Hotels in Asia and India are famous for their service and facilities and we have selected some of the best 5-star deluxe hotels for your included land stays. In India, guests can enjoy the Ayurvedic spa of Le Meridien in Delhi and relax in the 35 acres of landscaped grounds at the ITC Mughal in Agra. When visiting the pharaonic treasures in Luxor your base will be the superbly well-appointed Steigenberger Palace on the banks of the River Nile that is situated only a short distance from Karnak and the Valley of the Kings. Balcony class passengers can look forward to the opulence of the Sofitel Palais Imperial in Marrakesh, which is surrounded by stunning gardens. In Singapore, the Regent Four Seasons with its rooftop pool, spectacular views and excellent restaurants, is one of the best addresses in town. See pages 50 and 51 for full information.

find out what is happening in the world, there is an internet centre. Or for those in need of a little retail therapy, there is also a well-stocked shop. A welcome difference One of the things that sets us apart from the rest is that we plan our cruise itineraries to maximise your time in port with many late evening sailings and overnight stays. This will give you the opportunity to plan an evening on board and ashore – perhaps having a cocktail in one of Cape Town’s many bars or sampling the wonderful cuisines of India and Asia, or just an after-dinner stroll for a nightcap as you watch the world go by.

Days at sea: relax or revive
Renowned lecture programme
During days at sea you may simply wish to enjoy the sun on the Lido Deck or cool off in the outdoor pool. Perhaps borrow a book from the library and read in one of the cool lounges. Alternatively, you could start the day with an early morning yoga session or plan a visit to the Athena Health Spa and Gym. Here you will find the latest gym equipment for a serious workout, a sauna, and a good selection of therapies and treatments to refresh and renew you during your cruise. More pampering can be found in the hairdressers and beauty centre.
If you want to attend to the mind not the body, there will be a programme of lectures – held in the Ambassador Lounge – designed to not only inform and entertain but also to bring to life the wonderful sites you will visit. There will normally be a number of guest speakers on your cruise, each with a different area
of expertise. Prior to arrival in each port of call, there will be a port briefing to inform you of the sites, culture and history of your next destination. Nights to remember Start your evening with a cocktail in the Lido Bar as you watch the sun go down and meet old and new-found friends. Or enjoy an aperitif in the Charleston Lounge while being entertained by our resident trio. As well as being one of the world’s most historically interesting and naturally beautiful destinations, India and Southeast Asia are also home to a range of unsurpassed culinary traditions.
This gastronomic culture of using the very best fresh local ingredients cooked in a simple but delicious and healthy style is the inspiration for the restaurants on Aegean Odyssey. Your cabin comforts Your on-board comfort is one of our prime concerns. All cabins feature flatscreen television, safe, hairdryer and plush bedding and most outside cabins have windows rather than portholes. A complete refurbishment in 2010 allowed us to create a feeling of luxury in all our accommodations.
BalconyCLASS As well as adding a new dimension of luxury to our cabins and staterooms, we have created a special level of accommodation entitled “Balcony Class.” In addition to the standard cabin features mentioned, guests in Balcony Class (categories A to D) will also enjoy: • STATEROOM OR SUITE WITH BALCONY • A WELCOME BOTTLE OF CHAMPAGNE & PETIT FOURS • REFRIGERATOR STOCKED WITH SOFT DRINKS • COMPLIMENTARY BOTTLED WATER • ROBE AND SLIPPERS • MOLTON BROWN BATHROOM AMENITIES • PRIORITY SIGHTSEEING BOARDING

After all is said and done, what passengers love most about Aegean Odyssey is the warm and intimate atmosphere. Ships, like people, have personalities. Some are proper and formal. Others offer the anonymity of a large hotel. On board Aegean Odyssey you are greeted as a returning family member even if it’s your first time on board.
24
IT’S OUR PEOPLE
THAT MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE Home away from home
At your service
On board Aegean Odyssey, you are greeted as a returning family member – even if it is your first time on board. You’ll find smiles and welcomes from everyone from the Captain to your cabin steward. And unlike a vast megaliner, it is easy to meet fellow passengers whose passions and interests are similar to your own.
Ask any world traveller where they receive the best service and they will undoubtedly answer the Far East. Of all the nationalities in that part of the world, it is the Filipinos who carry the highest reputation for attention to detail. Fluent in English and always serving with a smile, our Filipino crew will win your hearts.
Your cabin steward will refresh your stateroom before you even realise you need it. Your waiter will remember whether you take tea or coffee, and the barman whether you like your Martini shaken or stirred. They, and the rest of our officers and crew, are dedicated to making your holiday a delightful experience.
Just a few comments from previous guests “Everyone from the Captain, crew, cruise organiser, front office personel, cabin staff and beverage staff were extremely friendly and very helpful. They are a credit to your organisation and you can be proud of them – they are doing a great job!” G.B. - Australia “You don’t need to be a history buff –
It is this personal approach that our guests remember and value most highly. But don’t just take our word for it, here is what recent travellers aboard Aegean Odyssey had to say.
anyone with an interest in culture will enjoy this cruise. In a way it inspires you to learn more and delve deeper into the places we have visited. The ship is such a nice size – not too big and very informal. You really get to know people and it’s a delightful atmosphere.” P.M. - UK
“The voyage was a wonderful experience and the best way for me to celebrate my 70th birthday. From my initial dealings with the booking office, to the organised tours of the various sites, to the passengers and crew everything was perfect. The crew was most solicitous –
the maître’d made certain that I had a quiet table each evening, the cabin steward saw to my every need, the cruise coordinator organised a dinner celebration for my birthday. Everything was just LOVELY!!” R.S. - USA
“The ship was absolutely marvellous, the crew outstanding, accommodation food, service, entertainment all first class, and interesting Guest Speakers made it a wonderful cruise.” B.W. - Australia “I
chose this cruise because the itinerary was just a little bit different from the other companies I’ve looked at. It gave passengers the opportunity go to places and do things you couldn’t do with the other cruise lines.I would certainly recommend Voyages to Antiquity – it’s a bit intellectual, with some fun, relaxation, good food and amazing people. The scenery has been stunning and the places – without doubt I would recommend it.” M.M. - UK
“It was awesome!!!!! I am very happy
with the way the cruise panned out – well organised, great food and wine. Great sights to visit.” A.P. - Australia
“I
have recently returned and feel disposed to write and congratulate all concerned in providing me with a truly memorable experience. I was a single passenger taking my first cruise, and can honestly say that I could not find even the smallest fault with the whole experience. The ship, its facilities, the food on board, all the crew and the excursions within the 10 day itinerary were better than I dared to expect, and speaking to fellow passengers who were often well experienced in cruising, they too were pleasantly surprised at the high standards attained throughout. My only complaint is that you have of course spoiled me for any cruise other than with your Company, and I look forward to joining you again.” G. G. B. MBE - UK

IN SEARCH OF THE BIG FIVE ON INCLUDED SOUTH AFRICAN SAFARIS Elephant, lion, black rhino, buffalo and leopard – here is an amazing opportunity to see the magnificent wildlife of the African savannah. Three of the following voyages include visits to the Addo Elephant Park, Hluhluwe Game Reserve and St Lucia Nature Reserve.
ADDO ELEPHANT PARK This is a true conservation success story. When the park was set up in 1931 it contained 11 elephants, today it is home to over 450. The species found here is somewhat smaller than the traditional African elephant and is also slightly reddish in colour as opposed to the more usual grey tone. The park is also home to abundant animal and bird life.
HLUHLUWE GAME RESERVE Perhaps the main attraction of Hluhluwe is its population of rare white rhinos, a species increasingly under threat of extinction due to poaching for the Chinese medicine trade. In this reserve you are also likely to spot cheetah, giraffe, leopard and a host of other iconic African animals.
the indian ocean
ST LUCIA NATURE RESERVE Here you will enjoy a safari with a difference as you swap the usual Land Rover for a boat and take to the waters of Lake St Lucia. This is home to the greatest population of crocodiles and hippos in South Africa. Lake St Lucia is also a paradise for birdwatchers as it is home to over 500 different species. Please note that wildlife sightings of specific animals cannot be guaranteed.

During your visit you will see Camara de Lobos, one of the villages that inspired Churchill to paint, and also have enough free time to explore the famous Botanical Gardens. You reach the island having sailed from the historical Spanish mainland port of Cadiz and en route to the Canary Islands. Here you will discover a little-known aspect of the islands as you travel to the Caldera de Taburiente National Park and journey deep inland to the fascinating interior of Fuerteventura – a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve – with its historic churches and rugged landscapes. Before reaching Morocco and a chance to experience the very best it has to offer including Casablanca, Rabat, Tangier and Marrakesh, plus the lesser-known but equally exciting city of Taroudant, there is time to call at the port of El Marsa. From here you will venture into the sand dunes of the Western Sahara Desert and experience one of the great wildernesses of the world.

On your included tour, you’ll journey deep inland to discover forgotten villages dotted with whitewashed houses, beautiful old churches and hidden cobbled streets. You’ll take in the traditional former capital, Betancuria, and the picturesque village of Pajara. You’ll also call in at an aloe vera plantation, stop in the windmill museum Moroccan experience
LAAYOUNE AND THE WESTERN SAHARA DESERT From the port of El Marsa, you’ll drive across the sand dunes to the city of Laayoune with its unique Spanish-Saharan architecture and colourful markets. Your journey will take you through one of the world’s great desert landscapes.

MOROCCO: TANGIER TO AGADIR In Tangier your tour includes the caves of Hercules – a place of stunning natural beauty and where Hercules is said to have rested after finishing his 12 labours – and the Kasbah. Leave Casablanca by road for Rabat; en route visit the Hassan II Mosque, the second largest mosque outside of Saudi Arabia. Located on the Atlantic coastline, Rabat is Morocco’s capital and highlights here include the Kasbah of the Oudaias, the Royal Palace, and the old town founded by the Carthaginians, conquered by the Romans and later settled by the Arabs. Then to Marrakesh with its famous medina and bustling Djemaa el-Fna Square. Continue on to Agadir to rejoin Aegean Odyssey. FROM THE CANARY ISLANDS TO THE WESTERN SAHARA DESERT Head inland from Las Palmas to discover Gran Canaria's spectacular but little visited interior including the Bandama Crater and the historic city of Arucas with its charming Marquise's Gardens. From the port of Dakhla, once capital of the Spanish province of Rio de Oro, you’ll journey through one of the world’s great unspoiled desert landscapes with its authentic nomadic lifestyle and view the wildlife surrounding a beautiful lagoon. Western Sahara Desert
CHURCHILL IN MARRAKESH Marrakesh held a special place in Winston Churchill’s heart and he once described the Moroccan city as “simply the nicest place on Earth to spend an afternoon.” Churchill first visited Marrakesh in the Thirties when he spent the winter of 1935 painting what he called “the Paris of the Sahara.” So taken was he with the place that, during a vital conference with Franklin D Roosevelt in Casablanca in 1943, Churchill broke off discussions in order to show the American President his favourite city. After the war, Churchill often visited and usually stayed at Marrakesh’s most famous hotel, La Mamounia.
REMOTE ISLANDS OF THE ATLANTIC OCEAN Enjoy the African feel to Praia, capital of the Cape Verde island of Sao Tiago. Travel to the old Portuguese capital of Cidade Velha with its fort, cathedral and colonial houses. The island of Sao Tome, another former Portuguese colony, has many interesting sites including the National Museum, lively city market and the chance to visit a plantation. Enjoy a day relaxing
and enjoying tropical beach life at the exotically-named resort of Bom Bom on the island of Principe. ANGOLA AND NAMIBIA Once known as the “Paris of Africa”, Luanda has suffered a traumatic recent history and this tour will reveal a city beginning to regain its confidence. See the Palacio de Ferro designed by Gustav Eiffel of Tower fame, the colonial suburb of Cidade Alta and visit the fascinating Angolan National Museum. Your first port in Namibia is Walvis Bay from where you take the short but scenic (sand dunes on one side, the rolling Atlantic on the other) drive to the colonial town of Swakopmund. Return to the Walvis Bay Lagoon renowned for its marine and bird life. Further down the coast is Luderitz a town of history and charm. Founded by Bremen merchant Adolf Luderitz in 1883, your walking tour will take in the remarkable colonial architecture and the Luderitz Museum that tells the town’s story as a diamond port. THE HISTORY AND SITES IN AND AROUND CAPE TOWN “This cape is the most stately thing and the fairest cape we saw in the whole circumference of the earth.” These were the words of Sir Francis Drake when he first saw the site of what is today Cape Town. Your stay in this historic and picturesque city – known as South Africa’s “Mother City” – will show you the best this marvellous place has to offer. After an orientation tour, you will take the unforgettable cable car ride up Table Mountain and then take the ferry to Robben Island. This infamous prison was the place of Nelson Mandela’s incarceration and your tour includes the later president’s cell. You will also visit one of the world famous wine estates in Stellenbosch and taste the vintages. In free time, you may wish to explore the stunning Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. And, as the ship is moored close to the lively Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, you can stroll ashore and enjoy the many restaurants and bars. SOUTH AFRICA’S AMAZING NATURAL HISTORY The Addo Elephant Park is the first of your game reserve safaris and features the park’s namesake elephants. Addo also comprises five distinct habitats – from grassland to montane forest – and so there is a wealth of wildlife on show. While exactly what is seen varies day-to-day, the sights are always spectacular. At Hluhluwe Game Reserve as well as the chance to get up close to many beautiful species, the stand out attraction is the park’s population of rare white rhinos. A different experience awaits at St Lucia Wetland Reserve as you cruise the lake in search of hippo and crocodiles. This park also boasts an incredible variety of bird life. MOSSEL BAY AND THE GARDEN ROUTE The ancient forests, craggy peaks covered in flowering scrub called fynbos, and the desert-like landscape combine to create one of the most spectacular natural wonders in the world – the Garden Route. Your journey takes you into the Outeniqua Mountains and to Oudtshoorn, a town set in an oasis-like valley. The opulent architecture of Oudtshoorn is testament to the Ostrich Feather Boom that was fuelled by the demand for feathers for women’s clothing which ran from 1860-1914. LUDERITZ AND NAMIBIA’S SKELETON COAST Luderitz is a town of history and charm. Founded by Bremen merchant Adolf Luderitz in 1883, it blossomed during the diamond rush at the beginning of the 20th century. Your walking tour will take in the remarkable colonial architecture including the opulent Goerke Haus one of the “diamond palaces” built in 1910 and the Luderitz Museum that tells the town’s story as a diamond port. You will also venture into the Namib Desert to visit the eerily beautiful ghost town of Kolmanskop. Once a thriving and wealthy diamond town, Kolmanskop was abandoned after World War I when the prospectors moved on. There is also the opportunity to see the fabulous wildlife on Halifax Island.

Known as the Mother City, and nestling in the shadow of the spectacular Table Mountain, Cape Town's setting could not be more stunning. As well as breathtaking scenery, this is also an exciting cultural city with a fascinating history and your stay here will give you plenty of time to appreciate all its charms. Two of South Africa's greatest natural attractions feature in this itinerary: the botanical marvels of the Garden Route and the magnificent African wildlife. Your journey along the Garden Route into the Outeniqua Mountains starts from the picturesque small harbour town of Mossel Bay, and your safari adventures take you to three of South Africa’s best game parks and the opportunity to get up close to Africa’s iconic wildlife. There is also time to call at the vibrant city of Durban with its memorable Botanical Gardens – with its famous orchid house – and bustling craft market.

CAPE TOWN: SOUTH AFRICA’S “MOTHER CITY” The great naturalist Charles Darwin was so moved by the time he spent in Cape Town that he was moved to write to his sister: “This is a pretty and singular town; it lies at the foot of an enormous wall (the Table Mountain), which reaches into the clouds, and makes a most imposing barrier. Cape Town is a great inn, on the great highway to the east.” Your visit to this fabulous city will, we hope, do justice to his words. The beauty of Cape Town’s location will certainly make an impression when you take the cable car up Table Mountain and get a breathtaking panoramic view of its situation. Your visit also offers the chance of a trip to infamous Robben Island or a visit to a winery in the Stellenbosch Valley, and time to enjoy this wonderful place. MOSSEL BAY AND THE GARDEN ROUTE The ancient forests, craggy peaks covered in flowering scrub called fynbos, and the desert-like landscape combine to create one of the most spectacular natural wonders in the world, the Garden Route. ON SAFARI: LAND OF LION, ELEPHANT AND LEOPARD At Hluhluwe Game Reserve as well as the chance to get up close to many beautiful species, the stand out attraction is the park’s population of rare white rhinos.
Visit South Africa’s Game Reserves
A different experience awaits at St Lucia Wetland Reserve as you cruise the lake in search of hippo and crocodiles. This park also boasts an incredible variety of birdlife. The Addo Elephant Park is the final of your game reserve safaris and features, of course, the park’s namesake African elephants. Addo also comprises five distinct habitats – from grassland to montane forest – and so there is a wealth of wildlife on show. While exactly what is seen on a game drive varies day-to-day, the sights are always spectacular. DURBAN: A FUN LOVING CITY More laid back than Cape Town and the centre of South Africa’s sporting life, Durban is a mix of grand colonial buildings and beautiful art deco architecture. Your tour will show you out of the city to the Valley of a Thousand Hills to experience both modern and historical African tribal culture in the Zulu homeland. As well as learning about the tribe’s often bloody history, there will be a performance of the renowned Zulu dance.

It is also a buzzing city famous for its modern culture and rich history. Your stay in this city will include a trip up Table Mountain, the opportunity to see Mandela’s cell on Robben Island and the opportunity of a trip to the Stellenbosch Valley including a wine tasting. Any spare time you have is easily filled in this charming and fascinating place. It is also a good idea to visit the cultivated areas, such as the famous Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens.

SAVING THE WHITE RHINO Saving the white rhinos from extinction is one of the greatest success stories in conservation history. In the early 1890s there were only about 20 white rhino left in the world, all of them existing in Hluhluwe. Today, there are over 1,600 in the reserve and many others have been relocated throughout the world. As the home of Operation Rhino in the 1950s and 60s, the Park became world-renowned for its white rhino conservation. The success of this programme has recently been compromised by the increase in rhino poaching within the park. This recent threat has not only become a great concern for the park, but for rhino conservationists countrywide.
ON SAFARI: LAND OF LION, ELEPHANT AND LEOPARD The Addo Elephant Park is the first of your game reserve safaris and features, of course, the park’s namesake African elephants. Addo also comprises five distinct habitats – from grassland to montane forest – and so there is a wealth of wildlife on show. At Hluhluwe Game Reserve as well as the chance to get up close to many beautiful species, the stand out attraction is the park’s population of rare white rhinos (see box). lagoons. Exotic trees edge the border of white sand beaches on the beautiful Seychelles islands. On granite-peaked Mahe there is a quaint, ramshackle charm to the tin roofs and broad verandas of Victoria, the capital. A trip to the Marine National Park reveals the beauty of the Seychelles coral reef. A paradise for naturalists, the Seychelles are home to some of the greatest variety of flora and fauna in the world. La Digue is home to many rare species of birds and is considered the most beautiful island in the group. Praslin, sanctuary for the rare black parrot, is one of only two places in the world able to grow the famous Coco-de-Mer palm tree. After cruising through the Maldives, you will spend the day enjoying a barbecue and party on the sandy beaches of the uninhabited island of Kuda Bandos. SRI LANKA – PEARL OF THE INDIAN OCEAN A jewel of an island, Sri Lanka offers a unique combination of scenery, culture and history. Although Colombo is a thriving modern city, it has not lost its Old World charm, spiritual heart and historical interest. This contrast will become apparent as you see the colourful Pettah Bazaar and visit the Asokaramaya Buddhist temple. Here you will see the incredible murals: the details and colours are exquisite and the Asokaramaya is truly a worthy destination to explore.

SRI LANKA, INDIA & THE ANDAMAN ISLANDS Start your journey with a 2-night hotel stay in Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka. Here you will visit the Pettah Bazaar and the Asokaramaya Buddhist temple with its incredible murals. Also included is a drive through Sri Lanka’s stunning hill country to the town of Kandy and the Temple of the Tooth containing the famous dental relic of the Buddha. The final destination in Sri Lanka is Galle, home to the well-preserved 17th century Dutch fort. Chennai, formerly known as Madras, was founded nearly 400 years ago and is India's sixth largest city. Your tour will include Fort St George which was built by the East India Company in 1640. Situated in the Bay of Bengal between India and Burma, the Andaman Islands were an important British naval base and penal colony. Port Blair is the islands' capital and home to the Andaman's historic monuments and museums.
Shwedagon Pagoda, Yangon
DISCOVERING THE ANCIENT BURMESE KINGDOM BAGAN Located in the central plains of Myanmar lie the ruins of Bagan covering an area of 16 square miles. Constructed between the 11th and 13th century, this remarkable landscape is peppered with over 2,000 pagodas and temples. Alternatively you can visit MANDALAY, the last Royal capital of Burma, situated on the banks of the Irrawaddy River. See the magnificent Palace, visit the famous Buddhiust monastery and the Maha Muni Pagoda with its spectacular gold-leaf Buddha.
BURMA – LAND OF GOLDEN TEMPLES Gentle and humorous people, monumental golden statues of the Buddha, landscapes dotted with thousands of sacred stupas (Buddhist holy monuments), and a sense of travelling back in time to the days of old Asia are just some of the experiences that will greet you in Myanmar (Burma). As Aegean Odyssey is berthed in the heart of Yangon (Rangoon), you will have plenty of time to explore this remarkable city. A highlight of Yangon is the awe-inspiring golden Shwedagon pagoda with its 320-foot-high stupa that is covered in genuine gold plates (these are donated by ordinary Myanmar people from all over the country): it is truly a remarkable sight. As well as included sightseeing in
Yangon, there’s a full day excursion to Bago. Or you may choose to take an optional excursion by air to visit one of Myanmar’s other highlights – Mandalay or Bagan (see box). THAILAND & MALAYSIA Although it is a popular resort, Phuket has retained much of its culture. From here, a local boat will take you to the natural wonders of the Phi Phi Islands. Penang was part of the Malay sultanate until 1786, when Captain Francis Light built a fort at the site of present-day Georgetown and managed to get the island ceded to the British East India Company. You will spend the afternoon exploring the island, visiting the massive reclining Buddha and museum. Malacca was the capital of the Malacca Sultanate and was the centre of the Malay world in the 15th and 16th centuries. It fell to the hands of the Portuguese in 1511 and centuries of colonisation by the Portuguese, Dutch and the British have influenced the architecture of the town. This rich history will come to life as you tour the main colonial sites including the ruined Portuguese fort “A Famosa,” St Paul’s Church that overlooks the Malacca Strait, and Dutch Square. SINGAPORE – CITY OF LIONS Singapore could be said to be the city that Sir Stamford Raffles built. It was his vision that identified Singapore as the perfect port for British trade and in 1819 he persuaded Sultan Hussein to cede it to the British. Singapore’s fortunes flourished until it fell to the Japanese in World War II but, after post-war independence, the energy and dynamism of Singapore’s people created one of the great modern cities of Asia.

Aegean Odyssey continues its voyage along India’s historic Malabar Coast, the long history of which has left this tropical coastline peppered with gems for the visitor. After this, there is an included land tour of India’s Golden Triangle. The term "golden" is apt as the extraordinary wealth of cultural and historical splendour in each of the three cities is truly remarkable. SINGAPORE & MALAY PENINSULA The energy and dynamism of Singapore’s people created one of the great modern cities of Asia. A fascinating tour of the city will give you a flavour of both modern and historical Singapore. The rich history of Malacca will come to life as you tour the main colonial sites including the ruined Portuguese fort “A Famosa,” St Paul’s Church and Dutch Square. Penang, along with Malacca and Singapore, was one of the three British Straits Settlements and the capital, Georgetown, was named after King George III. You will spend the afternoon exploring Georgetown with its wellpreserved colonial core. COLOMBO & KANDY, SRI LANKA Although Colombo is a modern city, it has not lost its Old World charm, spiritual heart and historical interest. This contrast is apparent as you see the colourful Pettah Bazaar and visit the Asokaramaya Buddhist temple. After a drive through Sri Lanka’s stunning hill country and tea plantations, you arrive at the picturesque, naturally fortified hill town of Kandy, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you will visit the Temple of the Tooth and the Botanical Gardens. CRUISE THE MALABAR COAST TO MUMBAI Situated in the State of Kerala, Cochin has a remarkable history: here you will see the oldest church in India and palaces from the days of the Raj. It was here in 1524 that the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama died and his body was entombed in the chapel of Santo Antonio until it was moved to Portugal in 1538. With its languid, tropical atmosphere and magnificent chapel of St Aloysius, Mangalore is a delightful stop on your Taj Mahal, Agra
way up the west coast of India. Old Goa, founded by the Portuguese, is home to churches dating back to the mid-16th century. As well as seeing the historic villas of the Portuguese era, you will visit the Basilica of Bom Jesus. Your tour will visit all the main sights of Mumbai including Mani Bhavan, a museum that was once the residence of Mahatma Gandhi, the Victorian monuments of the British Empire, the Prince of Wales Museum and the Gateway of India. Next, fly to Delhi and the wonders of the Golden Triangle. DELHI & THE GOLDEN TRIANGLE Founded in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, Jaipur is a city of palaces built from rose-coloured stone. You will visit the Maharaja’s City Palace, and also see the magnificent Hawa Mahal (Palace of the Winds). Another highlight is the Amber Fort with its lavish interiors. Agra was one of the most important cities in India under the Mughals and witnessed a great deal of ambitious building activity. Babar, the founder of the Mughal dynasty, laid out the first formal Persian garden on the banks of the Yamuna river and his grandson Akbar raised the towering ramparts of the Great Red Fort. Shah Jahan, known for his keen interest in architecture, gave Agra its most prized monument, the Taj Mahal. After the British East India Company had gained control of much of India during the 18th and 19th centuries, Calcutta became the capital until George V announced in 1911 that it was to move back to Delhi. Your visit will include a tour of the Old City and the immense Jama Masjid (Great Mosque). You will see the famous Red Fort and Raj Ghat where Gandhi was cremated.

INDIA’S GOLDEN TRIANGLE Visit Delhi Old City and the immense Jama Masjid (Great Mosque). See the famous Red Fort and Raj Ghat where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated. Walk along the imperial mall, Rajpath, to the mighty arch of India Gate. Once one of the most important cities in India under the Mughals, Agra witnessed a great deal of ambitious and splendid building activity. Babar, founder of the Mughal dynasty, laid out the first formal Persian garden and his grandson Akbar raised the towering ramparts of the Great Red Fort. Shah Jahan gave Agra its most prized monument, the Taj Mahal. Popularly known as the Pink City, Jaipur was founded in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the ruler of Amber. It is a city of palaces built from rose-coloured stone where you will visit the opulent Maharaja’s City Palace and see the magnificent Hawa Mahal (Palace of the Winds). Another highlight is the Amber Fort with its lavish interiors. MUMBAI – GATEWAY TO INDIA Mumbai was made the headquarters of the British East India Company in 1687 but it was the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 that transformed the city – then known as Bombay – into one of the world’s great trading centres. Your tour will visit all the main sights of Mumbai including Mani Bhavan, a museum that was once the residence of Mahatma Gandhi, the Victorian architectural monuments of the British Empire, the Prince of Wales Museum and the Gateway of India.
Temple of Queen Hatshepsut
BIRTHPLACE OF A HERO Mohandas Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869 in Porbandar, where his father, uncle and grandfather had all been prime ministers to the Jethwa Rajput rulers of the princely state. The site of Gandhi’s birth, Kirti Mandir, is now a museum. 25 DAYS FROM DELHI TO AMMAN
OMAN – MUSCAT AND SALALAH The 16th-century Portuguese admiral Alfonso de Albuqueque described Muscat as a “very elegant town with very fine houses,” and his description of the capital of Oman still holds true today. The old town is dominated by two great stone forts, Al Jalali and Al Mirani, which were built by the Portuguese in the late 16th century, and on the waterfront stands the Sultan's imposing palace. Salalah is a city of antiquity, boasting both the ruins of the fortified town of Sumharam and the Tomb of Job. EGYPT’S VALLEY OF THE KINGS & ANCIENT JORDAN From Safaga we head to Luxor for an overnight hotel stay. Highlights here include the massive Karnak Temple and tombs of the pharaohs in the Valley of the Kings. Disembarking in Aqaba the drive to Petra takes a scenic route via Wadi Rum. Your first glimpse of the ancient rose-red city of Petra is one you will not forget, as you emerge from the mile long path that winds between two overhanging cliffs to stand in front of the impressive colonnaded Treasury. Citadel Hill in Amman is the site of an impressive concentration of antiquity including the 2nd-century AD Temple of Hercules. Graeco-Roman Jerash was built by Alexander the Great in the 2nd century BC and was a flourishing city of the Decapolis, the league of ten Roman cities.

AMMAN, ANCIENT PETRA & THE SUEZ CANAL Citadel Hill in Jordan's capital Amman is the site of an impressive concentration of antiquity including 2nd-century AD Temple of Hercules, the Omayyad Palace and Bronze and Iron Age remains. Graeco-Roman Jerash was built by Alexander the Great in the 2nd century BC and was a flourishing city of the Decapolis, the league of ten Roman cities. The city lay untouched for centuries and is very well preserved – you can see colonnaded streets, temples and a theatre which once held 5,000 spectators. Your drive to Petra takes a scenic route via the Dead Sea – pause for lunch and take a dip in the sea's salutary buoyant waters. Your first glimpse of the ancient rose-red city of Petra is one you will not forget, as you emerge from the mile long path that winds between two overhanging cliffs to stand in front of the impressive colonnaded Treasury. Embarking Aegean Odyssey in the port of Aqaba, you can relax as the ship cruises the Red Sea and enjoy a daytime sailing through the Suez Canal to the Mediterranean.
The Treasury, Petra
THE PARTHENON: AN EXPLOSIVE HISTORY The year 1687 was not a good one for the Parthenon. Ottoman Athens was under attack from the Venetians and the Turks decided to sequester their ammunition within the thick walls of the Parthenon. The Christian forces under the command of a Swedish general Count Koenigsmark, subjected the temple to a prolonged bombardment and unfortunately, the artillery hit the bulls eye. The resulting explosion destroyed 28 columns and much of the the internal structure, and further catastrophic damage followed as the triumphant Venetians botched an attempt to remove the surviving figures of the west pediment.
CYPRUS TO TURKEY’S CRUSADER COAST & RHODES A short journey from Limassol takes you to the Graeco-Roman city of Kourion. With breathtaking views over the Mediterranean, Kourion contains some remarkable monuments including the vast 2nd-century AD stadium and the Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates. Then to Antalya in Turkey and the Hellenistic city of Perge and the ancient Roman trading town of Aspendos with its beautifully preserved 2nd century AD Roman theatre.
The next port of call is Rhodes and a chance to explore the Old Town and Citadel of the Knights of St John. Also available during our call at Rhodes is an optional trip to the Acropolis at Lindos. From the Turkish port of Kusadasi, a short trip by road takes you to the magnificent ruins of Ephesus and its “terraced houses of the rich.” Also included is a full day excursion to the remarkable ancient city of Aphrodisias. SACRED GREEK ISLANDS The next port of call is Delos, the paramount religious sanctuary of the ancient Greek world. The tour explores the island’s temples and, of course, the famous lion statues. Nearby Mykonos, with its lively cafes and shops, is the perfect contrast. On arriving in Santorini you take the short drive to Akrotiri. This ancient Minoan outpost is a truly remarkable site and the excavations include the remains of a sophisticated civilisation dating back to the 16th century BC. CLASSICAL ATHENS Your 2-night hotel stay in Athens includes a full morning's guided tour of the city's ancient citadel, the Acropolis. Built during the "Golden Age" of Athens between 447-438BC, the Acropolis represents the magnificent achievements of Athenian culture. You will also visit the wonderful Acropolis Museum and have plenty of free time to explore the city's other remarkable sites such as the ancient Agora and the National Archaeological Museum.

GENERAL INFORMATION THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO TRAVEL DOCUMENTATION AND VISAS All information provided below pertains to Australian and New Zealand passport holders only and is valid at the time of printing, November 2014. Specific information for your cruise and land programme will be provided at the time of booking. Please also refer to the applicable government website for any updates to this information. Requirements for other nationalities can be obtained from the consulates of the countries to be visited on the specific cruise and land programme. It is each guest’s own responsibility to ensure that they have the required documentation prior to travel. Failure to produce the required documentation at embarkation may result in denied boarding and any expenses incurred as a result are not the responsibility of Voyages to Antiquity.
PASSPORTS Full passports are required and must be valid for a minimum of six months after the last day of your holiday. Special Note: Guests on itineraries which include calls to Arab countries and that may have an Israeli visa or entry stamp in their passport are strongly encouraged to obtain a new passport prior to travel. This is simply a recommendation and is not a requirement.
VISAS At time of printing, Australian and New Zealand passport holders need to obtain prior to departure a visa for Sri Lanka and a multiple entry visa for the cruises featuring India. Egypt When arriving to Egypt by sea on board Aegean Odyssey, Voyages to Antiquity will obtain the visa on your behalf and add the cost to your on-board account.
54
At least 90 days prior to departure, we must have the following information relating to each passenger: full name (as it appears on passport), address, nationality, date and place of birth; plus passport number, expiration date and date and place of issue. Guests cannot be included in any ship-issued group visas if this information is not supplied by the required time.
HEALTH As health regulations are ever changing, we recommend that you consult your doctor or your local health department at least 10 weeks before your intended departure to check the latest requirements for the countries you will be visiting. Upon receiving pre-documentation materials, we will advise you of any mandatory vaccination requirements. Any guest arriving at the airport/port without the correct certificate will be refused permission to board and any expenses incurred as a result are not the responsibility of Voyages to Antiquity. Depending on the itinerary, guests should consult their doctor regarding the possibility of taking a course of anti-malarial tablets prior to their departure. Yellow fever inoculations are required only when arriving from countries with risk of yellow fever transmission – please consult your doctor before travelling. There is a well equipped medical centre staffed by a doctor and licensed nurse for the benefit of both the guests and the crew. The medical centre is primarily intended to provide acute care for illness and accidents that may occur while on holiday and is not intended to provide long term care for patients with chronic illnesses or as a substitute for regular health care. Charges apply for consultations, prescriptions, and cabin visits. Guests that require regular treatments or testing of any kind during the cruise and land
programme must advise Voyages to Antiquity at the time of deposit. Voyages to Antiquity has the right to refuse or revoke passage to anyone who, in its judgment, is in a physical condition that is beyond the care that can be provided or made available.
PRIVACY POLICY Voyages to Antiquity requires all guests to provide full passport details, including addresses and next of kin information prior to issuance of final documentation. The personal information provided to the company is only shared as required by government regulations to the local authorities for the purposes of customs, visas, and immigration clearances. The information may also be shared with certain suppliers of your travel arrangements. It should be understood that when making your booking you agree to your personal information being passed on as described above. You may also receive marketing communications from Voyages to Antiquity unless you indicate otherwise.
SPECIAL NEEDS The cruises and land programmes featured include extensive sightseeing which may involve walking on uneven surfaces, up and down multiple stairs, and require a certain level of fitness and mobility. Some ports on the itineraries may require disembarkation of the ship with the ship’s or local tenders. Please consider these issues carefully prior to booking. There is one cabin specifically adapted for wheelchair use; however guests must bring their own collapsible wheelchair dimensions of which must not exceed 26” wide. Motorised scooters of any kind are not able to be accommodated on board Aegean Odyssey. Guests that need to travel with medical apparatus including wheelchairs, portable
CPAP’s, and orthopedic devices must advise Voyages to Antiquity, in writing, at the time of deposit. A doctor’s statement of fitness may be required. All guests need to be self-sufficient and have an able-bodied guest travelling with them to take full responsibility for any assistance that is required. Important Notice: Failure to advise Voyages to Antiquity as required may result in denied boarding and no refunds are provided for such incidents.
DIETARY RESTRICTIONS Please advise us at the time of booking of any special dietary restrictions or specific food allergies. Guests with specific food allergies must advise Voyages to Antiquity in writing at the time of deposit, and while all possible is done to meet the requirement(s), the guest is expected to exercise due caution when dining, either on board or during pre-, post-, or full-day excursions. The ship can meet most general requests such as low cholesterol, diabetic, and salt- or fat-free. While all dietary requests are provided to our local suppliers and hotels in advance Voyages to Antiquity cannot guarantee fulfillment on included meals at hotels or local restaurants on pre-, post- or full-day excursions.
WE LOOK AFTER YOU It is comforting to know that once you arrive at your overseas airport and clear customs you will be met and looked after all the way to the ship and your baggage will be taken direct to your cabin. No hassle, no fuss. See note on page 61 regarding included transfers.
SHORE EXCURSIONS AND LAND ARRANGEMENTS Shore Excursions: Included in most ports of call. Where suitable, some excursions will be available at an additional cost. Descriptions of
the tours will be sent with your final documents or made available on the Voyages to Antiquity website. Lunches on full-day tours can be a picnic lunch provided by Aegean Odyssey or at a local restaurant. Please note that these programmes are planned far in advance of your visit, and we reserve the right to change, cancel, or substitute an included excursion at any time. There is no refund or credit available for non-use of an included excursion.
SMOKING Smoking is only permitted on Belvedere Deck aft. Smoking is prohibited in all other areas including cabins, balconies, and on excursion motorcoaches. All included hotel rooms are requested by Voyages to Antiquity as non-smoking; however this is not always possible and Voyages to Antiquity cannot be held responsible if the guest’s preference is not available on arrival.
CURRENCY, PAYMENTS AND GRATUITIES ON BOARD A “cashless” system is operated on board Aegean Odyssey with all purchases charged to your cabin account. The final account can be settled in UK£ or US$ at the end of the cruise. Visa, MasterCard and American Express credit cards, and Travellers Cheques can be used for settlement; however American Express cardholders will be charged a 2% surcharge. Personal cheques and debit cards cannot be accepted. Gratuities for the services you receive on board Aegean Odyssey from your cabin steward and dining room staff are included in your cruise fare. Naturally, guests at their own discretion may wish to show their appreciation to individuals offering exceptional service. Please note that a service charge of 12.5% is automatically added to your account for any bar service.
ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES Cabins and suites feature European 2-pin round outlets with 220 voltage. Hair dryers are provided in your cabin and electric rollers, curling irons, electric shavers, and other small appliances can be used. Adapters/converters are available on board for conversion to 110 volts if required; however, we recommend you bring your own in the event supplies are limited. For safety reasons, travel irons are not allowed.
LAUNDRY AND PRESSING Valet service is available for laundry and pressing. A laundry bag and order form are provided in your cabin.
COMMUNICATIONS Aegean Odyssey is fitted with the latest satellite communication technology and direct dial telephones in all cabins. There is also an internet centre on Belvedere Deck and charges are based on connection time.
CHILDREN Voyages to Antiquity cruise programmes are destination focused and designed for adults. There are no facilities for children on board Aegean Odyssey.
DINING ARRANGEMENTS Dining arrangements on Aegean Odyssey are flexible as both restaurants have an “open seating” policy with meal times arranged to suit the ship’s time in port and the shore excursion programmes. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served in the Terrace Café, while lunch and dinner only are available in the Marco Polo Restaurant. On days when full-day shore excursion tours are operated, lunch will only be available in either the Terrace Café or Marco Polo Restaurant. Reservations can be made for dinner in the Marco Polo Restaurant.

FLY FREE offers are subject to availability and capacity controlled and may require that additional funds be paid to ensure air ticketing conditions are met.
6. Itinerary Changes The holidays featured in this brochure are planned many months in advance. Occasionally, events can occur that will require changes (including cancellations) to be made to the published itineraries – both before and after bookings have been confirmed. Some changes are minor, but occasionally they can be a significant change. Cancellations of, or changes to, itineraries may be made for a number of reasons including (but not limited to) war, civil unrest, industrial disruption/strikes, natural disasters, adverse weather conditions, adverse travel advisory warnings issued by Governmental organisations, insufficient bookings or to maintain and protect the safety of passengers, crew and the ship. A significant change with alternative arrangements, or cancellation and refund A significant change is defined as a change to either your initial embarkation port or to the disembarkation port from that in your published itinerary to a port in a different country and advised to you at least 15 days prior to your travel departure. You can choose to either accept the alternate arrangement(s) which we will advise to you, or to cancel your booking and receive a refund of moneys that you have paid to the travel agent for the services that were to be provided by Voyages to Antiquity.
3. Changes by you Should you wish to make a change to your confirmed reservation you must notify us in writing as soon as possible. Whilst we will try to assist, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to do so. When we can, a AU$100 per person amendment fee (AU$200 within 90 days) is payable plus any other charges imposed by your Travel Agent. A change of sailing date by the passenger within 90 days prior to departure will be treated as a cancellation. Your Travel Agent may also charge administration fees separately to Voyages to Antiquity. 4. Cancellation by you You need to notify the Company in writing as soon as possible if you or any member of your party needs to cancel your cruise holiday, cancellation fees as indicated will be calculated from the date this letter is received by Voyages to Antiquity. Cancellation charges payable to the company are shown here: Period before departure Cancellation charge when written notice is per person received by the Company cancelling more than 90 days 10% between 61 to 89 days 25% between 31 to 60 days 50% between 16 to 30 days 75% 15 days or less 100% The cancellation charge is based on the total invoice charge for all services. Your Travel Agent may also charge cancellation fees separately to Voyages to Antiquity.
Changes to any Port of call in your itinerary Changes to the order, or substitution, of any dates or times at the Ports of call in the published itinerary are not considered a significant change and do not entitle you to any refunds or compensation. Normal cancellation fees will apply should you choose to cancel when advised of these Ports of call changes prior to your travel departure. The ship’s captain is responsible for the safety of the ship, passengers and crew. The captain has absolute discretion in making any alterations during the cruise to the published itinerary as the captain considers necessary and no compensation or refunds apply. Your rights in all other situations In all other situations, neither Voyages to Antiquity nor the travel agent or any of their affiliates, subsidiaries, employees or agents have any liability to you and you will need to ensure that your travel insurance will compensate you for any and all delays, cancellations, or changes to any part of your total travel itinerary that occur. This includes any airline or ground arrangements that you may have.
7. Consideration for others We expect all passengers to have consideration for other people. If in our reasonable opinion the behavior of any passenger is likely to cause damage, upset or distress to any third party or damage to property, the Company reserves the right to terminate that passenger’s cruise without prior notice. In these extreme circumstances no refunds will be made and the Company will not pay any expenses or costs incurred as a result of the termination of the cruise. The departure of the ship from any port will not be delayed for passengers who are not on board by the published departure time. 8. These include the Warsaw Convention which relates to carriage by air and the Athens Convention which relates to carriage by sea. Travel on board the mv Aegean Odyssey is subject to the conditions of carriage issued by the ship operating company and travel on board aircraft to join the Aegean Odyssey is subject to the airline’s standard ticket conditions. Full details are available on request. The Company is not to be held responsible for any act, event or omission during the time passengers are not aboard the vessel. The Company acts only as an agent for the supplier of off-ship services such as airlines and other off-ship transportation carriers, meals, shore excursions, accommodations, air ambulance and shore-side physicians. These may limit or exclude liability. Claims other than for personal injury, death and illness are limited to a reasonable amount. 10.English Law The conditions form part of the contract with the Company and any disputes arising out of it are governed by English Law. All proceedings shall be within the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales. 11.Independent Travel Arrangements Voyages to Antiquity is not responsible with regard to air or land travel or accommodation arrangements made using non-refundable, restricted travel or frequent flyer air tickets or frequent traveler hotel accommodations. This exclusion of liability includes the consequences of delays in the arrival at any airport, hotel, or port location that may occur when passengers who have purchased a cruise only holiday are using independently arranged air or land travel or when changes in travel arrangements may need to be made due to changes Voyages to Antiquity may make to the embarkation or disembarkation ports and the time of embarkation and disembarkation. The
Passenger Ticket/Passage Contract contains full terms and conditions for these exclusions. 12.Final Travel Documentation Travel documents including any air charter tickets are issued only after passport details have been received and final payment has been made to Voyages to Antiquity. In most cases the final documentation is sent no later than 30-21 days prior to scheduled departure. It is the responsibility of the passenger(s) and for his travel agent to verify that the full name(s) on any cruise, land, or air charter arrangements and reservations are the same as listed on his/her passport. Voyages to Antiquity is not responsible for cancellation or pre-bookable fees imposed by any supplier due to incorrect names provided by the travel agent or guest. 13.Services provided by Independent Contractors All shoreside tours and services described in this brochure or on the website including air charter, hotel, transfers and excursions are provided by independent contractors. Voyages to Antiquity acts solely as ticketing agent for all shore side activities and has no legal obligation or liability of any kind to guests for acts or omissions in connection with or arising out of arrangements with independent contractors, including but not limited to airline carriers, ground/tour operators, and hotels since they are neither agents for nor employees of Voyages to Antiquity. 14.Luggage Handling All baggage must conform to and will be handled in accordance with the regulations and restrictions of airlines, government security requirements, and third party suppliers. Charges or fees relating to the carriage and the handling of luggage excluding porterage at the pier and to/from the Voyages to Antiquity vessel are the guests' responsibility.
