Ferndale High School celebrates 7 valedictorians
The following are Q&As with Ferndale valedictorians Owen Cool Ferndale High School Where will you attend college? I will attend college at Montana State University in Bozeman. As a child, what was the first thing you wanted to become when you grew up? As a child, I wanted to be a neuroscience researcher. As I grew up, I learned that academic research often moves slowly, and I want to have a wider and more tangible impact in my career, so my interests shifted toward engineering. Now, I hope to be a chemical engineer. What are your career plans? I plan to become a chemical engineer, hopefully working in water purification, clean energy, or the pharmaceutical industry. To do this, I’m going to major in chemical and biological engineering at Montana State University and will likely work toward a graduate degree afterward. I’m not totally set on these industries, though, and might end up changing course (hopefully I settle on a plan while I’m still in school). I chose this career path because I think chemical engineering is suitably challenging and can make a large positive impact on the world, particularly through efficiently and sustainably manufacturing things people need to survive.
What is the greatest thing you gained from your K-12 experience? What is the greatest thing you gained from attending your high school? The greatest thing I gained from my K-12 experience is confidence in my academic ability. I don’t mean that I believe I am always right or especially gifted, but I am very comfortable making mistakes and learning from them. I realize that if I ask a question and I am wrong, the worst thing that could happen is I learn and correct my misunderstanding. Asking questions when I am confused or need clarification makes it easier to get through difficulty in learning and move forward. The greatest thing I gained from attending my high school is a sense of control over my academic goals. In all the upheaval of COVID-19, I wound up in the Running Start program, taking classes I wouldn’t have otherwise. Having a wider variety of classes to
Brooklyn Krawczak Ferndale High School Where will you attend college? I will be attending University of Arizona in Tucson.
Cadi Elford Ferndale High School Where will you attend college? As of right now, I am unsure where I will be attending college. As a child, what was the first thing you wanted to become when you grow up? I’ve predominately wanted to work in the medical field. Over the years, this aspiration of mine has expanded through my experiences of numerous wacky injuries/illnesses and my many caretaking responsibilities - in particular my youngest brother who is nonverbal and has Down Syndrome. What are your career plans? At this point in time, I am torn between pediatrics and surgery. I tend to get along extremely well with little kids, but I also find surgery incredibly captivating. What is the greatest thing you gained from your K-12 experience? What is the greatest thing you gained from attending high school? The ability to surpass and defy peoples’ expectations. Who is your role model? Jonny Kim - he seems like a pretty cool guy. What do you hope to be doing in five years? In 10 years? In 20 years? In five years, hopefully I will be attending medical school. In 10-20 years, I plan on working in a medical setting. What is the most important thing in your life? I think life would be boring if not for knowledge, for the opportunity to continue learning. Who is the most important person in your life? I have too many people of significant importance in my life for me to simply pick and choose one.
As a child, what was the first thing you wanted to become when you grow up? I remember the very first thing I wanted to be when I grew up was an office job. I would watch my mom dress up in fancy pants suits and dresses, walking out the door to her job at People’s Bank. I absolutely loved the idea of that. I even folded a piece of printer paper in half and drew a keyboard, as if it was a real computer. I used an old blackberry cellphone and answered calls as if they were real. Though I still love helping people find where they need to be, I can see myself now with a more hands-on job. I would love to become a nurse in the neonatal or trauma unit. Helping those around me first-hand is where I feel the most accomplished and happy. What are your career plans? My career plans are to become a nurse in the neonatal or trauma unit. My grandmother and aunts have been nurses and I have looked up to them in many ways. I have always been interested in the medical field, and constantly finding ways to help those around me. In addition, I’d love to become a traveling nurse, where I can live in a different place every three months or so. By doing so, I hope I can experience different people and locations! What is the greatest thing you gained from your K-12 experience? What is the greatest thing you gained from attending your high school? I think each phase of my life taught me something different and I gained new tools every step of the way. From Kindergarten to fifth grade I learned how to handle stressful
Tyler Nelson Ferndale High School Where will you attend college? I will be attending Capilano University in Vancouver, B.C. As a child, what was the first thing you wanted to become when you grow up? When I was young, I was determined I was going to be an author, artist, or actor. I maintained my passion for film throughout the years. But now, I’m looking to work more behind the camera. What are your career plans? I’m planning on receiving a bachelor’s degree in Motion Picture Production from CapU and then, working in the industry as a cinematographer or director. Cap has a strong film program, and Vancouver is known as a hub of entertainment, especially film. What is the greatest thing you gained from your K-12 experience? What is the greatest thing you gained from attending
choose from and being able to follow a more accelerated path was very helpful for me. It shifted my perspective on school from something I must do to something that opens new career opportunities and allows me to learn about things I am interested in. Who is your role model? I believe everyone has strengths and weaknesses, and relying on one person to model myself after leads one to make mistakes other people have already made. I like to think I have many role models, and I learn from both their strengths and their weaknesses. What do you hope to be doing in five years? In 10 years? In 20 years? In five years, I will be newly out of college, likely in a graduate program related to chemical or biological engineering, but possibly starting a career in a related field. In 10 years, I hope to be working in an industry related to my degree(s), and hopesituations and manage my work. Being in full time Aiming High truly taught me important lessons such as keeping a planner, making deadlines, and putting lots of hard work into projects pays off. Middle school was difficult, as it is for everyone. I didn’t trust myself and my confidence was at an alltime low. The main thing I learned from sixth to eighth grade was that no one really cares. I was living for other people honestly, and I was self-conscious of every step I was taking. By the middle of high school I have grown so much, realizing that kindness and being a genuine person is the only important thing when surrounding the people around you. In high school I learned balance is key. Life is busy and there are many parts to everything, so keeping my focus on what was truly important was vital. I have always been a people-pleaser, but learning how to make decisions for myself and deciding what was best for me took a lot of effort, but paid off in the end. Who is your role model – and why? My older sister, Camree Krawczak. It is difficult to be a younger sibling, but more so an older sibling I believe. She couldn’t have been a better role model in my opinion. She paved the road for any success I’ve had and was always willing to help me. I would confide in her with situations I’ve been in because she has experienced most of them before. Sometimes it’s hard being in her shadow because she is so amazing, but I’ve realized that we are different in our own ways and successful in our own ways. What do you hope to be doing in five
your high school? The greatest thing I gained from my K-12 experience is the idea that people prefer that you challenge yourself and risk failure instead of doing something you won’t be challenged at. From my high school experience, I learned how to be more confident and believe in myself. The brain is powerful; if you can convince others you know what you’re doing, you can probably convince yourself. Who is your role model? It’s too hard to pick just one, but some people I look up to are my dance instructors. They are all very caring and understanding people who’ve had an incredibly positive impact on my life. One of the most important qualities that they have that I found inspirational is patience. Not only tolerating but handling kids of all ages with grace and kindness is not an easy task, which is one of the many reasons I look up to them.
fully I will have found some solid footing by then, but I might not yet be at a job I hope to stay at long-term. Hopefully, I have established enough of a network by then to have that goal within reach. In 20 years, I hope to be in a longterm career with substantial experience. I can’t say too much more than that because it is very likely that my career goals will have changed by then. Maybe I will have founded a startup, maybe I will have gone back to school for something totally unrelated to chemical engineering. What’s exciting is that right now I have no idea what will be happening then, but over the next 20 years it will gradually become clear. What is the most important thing in your life? The most important things in my life are the goals I set for myself. Whether that’s running a marathon or academic goals, they give me something to work toward and structure my efforts around. Who is the most important person in your life? The most important people in my life are my family. Particularly now, as I move away from my hometown and occasionally worry about losing contact with friends, I realize I never worry about losing contact with family. I feel that regardless of where I am, I know that they are there for me and I am there for them. years? In 10 years? In 20 years? In five years I hope finish my schooling and be excited to start a career that I absolutely love. In 10 years my goal is to have enjoyed life to the fullest. My goal is to meet as many new people as I possibly can and see the world through many different perspectives. Hopefully in 20 years I will be content with the life I’ve created and built. Looking forward that much can be overwhelming, but by taking it day by day makes it easier to take on. What is the most important thing in your life? The most important thing in my life is the physical health and mental of myself. It is easy to forget about ourselves especially in the middle of a crisis or time of need. However, it quickly becomes impossible to take care of others when I don’t feel strong or healthy enough (mentally or physically) to put that energy towards others. Moderation in everything is important and keeping an open mind is also very important. Who is the most important person in your life? My parents. I admire the way they raised me. I am very grateful for every resource and material that has been given to me, giving me leverage to reach my dreams and goals every day. They had a good balance of teaching and protecting me, while also letting me learn things on my own and experience life myself.
What do you hope to be doing in five years? In 10 years? In 20 years? In five years, I hope to have received my bachelor’s degree and begun working in the industry on small projects. Ten years from now, I should be working up to bigger projects with a stronger sense of my style. Twenty years after I graduate from high school, I plan to have cemented myself in the film industry and will hopefully be working independently. What is the most important thing in your life? The most important thing in my life is probably dance. I dance around 10 hours a week right now, and it’s constantly engaging and a nice, calming way to relieve myself of the stresses I accumulate throughout the day. I also find a lot of self-expression through my movement, which is fun. Who is the most important person in your life? My sister is the most important person in my life. Even though she’s in college, I know she will always make time in her day for me. She is a fun, loving, and a dependable person. I hope I can be as compassionate as she is someday.

tling into a job in structural engineering. I will hopefully ten years out have worked my way up into a higher-level position in a job that I enjoy working for. Twenty years from now I hope I will be able to buy a house of my own and not just work to survive, but work to live. I want to enjoy what I do, where I work, and simply be happy. I would like to be able to keep working for the same company, or at least in the same field, for a long time because more time in a position and with a company results in more connections, respect, and benefits.
Abigail Poast Ferndale High School Where will you attend college? I will be attending Washington State University to major in civil engineering. As a child, what was the first thing you wanted to become when you grow up? The first thing I can remember wanting to do as a career was interior design. That has changed drastically, because it has been ten years, from interior design to astronomy to marine biology to engineering. I still have a good sense for design, but I do not enjoy enough to do it for a living.
Bryant Larrabee Ferndale High School Where will you attend college? Washington State University. As a child, what was the first thing you wanted to become when you grow up? As a child, I always wanted to be an actor because I was interested in film, but I decided to focus on that as a hobby and not a career. What are your career plans? Please explain your plans and how you chose this career path. I am planning to become a lawyer, and I chose this job because I want to help others and make a difference. What is the greatest thing you gained from your K-12 experience? What is the greatest thing you gained from attending your high school? The greatest thing I gained from my entire schooling experience was the lesson that hard work pays off. Who is your role model? My parents and grandparents are my role models because they always work hard and support me. What do you hope to be doing in five years? In 10 years? In 20 years? I hope to be finishing law school in five years and working as a lawyer in 10 and 20 years. What is the most important thing in your life? The most important thing in my life is family because they are always there for you. Who is the most important person in your life? The most important person in my life is my amazing girlfriend, Paige, who makes me so happy.
What are your career plans? I currently hope to be a structural engineer. Of the various careers a degree in Civil Engineering can get you, structural engineering stuck out to me the most. I love building things and putting things together. I was the kid that made the Lego sets and then never played with them. I find problem solving very fun, and like doing hands-on things, so designing and making a model to solve a problem would be perfect for me. What is the greatest thing you gained from your K-12 experience? What is the greatest thing you gained from attending your high school? The greatest thing I have gained throughout school is how to be a good friend. I was sort of a lonely kid when I was younger, but in school I made and lost many friends. When I lost friends, I realized what I did wrong and how I could have been a better friend to them, and then I can look at my current friendships and make sure I don’t mess up something I really care about. It will be hard to make new friends in college so I have gained the knowledge and experience to be as good of a friend as I can. The greatest thing I gained from attending my high school is confidence. I used to be terrified of talking in front of the class for presentations. Now I can talk in front of large groups with a minimal amount of
anxiety. Marching band is the big reason why I am more confident. We must look and feel powerful, like nobody could stop us if they tried, and we have to be confident in ourselves and know our field show like the back of our hands. Who is your role model? I am honestly not sure who my role model is anymore, but sophomore year before the pandemic, my role model was my friend Sophia Bianco. She is one year older than me, so she is at university now. Sophia was popular and had lots of friends but did not exclusively associate with the popular kids. She cared about and was genuinely friends with kids who were often seen as outsiders. She is very smart and took many advanced classes. Sophia also is extremely talented. She was in band and theater, so I got to spend a lot of time with her. We both play trombone so she would help me a lot. I remember thinking how I would never be as good as her, but now I am pretty close after seven years in band. What do you hope to be doing in five years? In 10 years? In 20 years? Five years from now, I hope I will be set-
Ferndale High School Where will you attend college? I am attending California State University, Monterey Bay.
What do you hope to be doing in 5 years? In 10 years? In 20 years? In five years, I hope to have graduated and started working. Also, I want to be able to travel and explore new places. After 10 years, I want to have a stable job surrounded by a strong community. In 20 years, I hope for more of the same. As long as I have stability and community, I will be happy.
As a child, what was the first thing you wanted to become when you grow up? As a kid, I didn’t really have a specific dream job. I floated through multiple ideas, from teacher to coroner. I’ve gone through countless job “plans,” but it wasn’t until this year that I realized I wanted to study marine science and work in that field.
What is the greatest thing you gained from your K-12 experience? What is the greatest thing you gained from attending
Who is the most important person in your life? The most important person in my life is Kelsey Ottum, the support specialist at school. I started meeting with her halfway through freshman year and have been seeing her probably once a week since then. She has helped me through family changes, mental health struggles, a global pandemic, and normal teenager things like friendship drama. I would not be where I am today without her. She motivated me to keep my grades up during the pandemic. She convinced me to aim higher than community college and to apply to WSU. If it weren’t for her help, I probably would have lost all motivation in class and for a better future.
er. With everything he has gone through, he continues to have strength and grace. He was able to continue attending school and recently received his degree. I aspire to have his strength and determination.
Trinity Vick
What are your career plans? My end goal is to become a marine researcher. I would love to work on creating solutions to problems facing marine life. I became interested in this career path after taking an intro to Environmental Science class at WCC. After studying at CSUMB, I will be able to work at research labs around the area.
What is the most important thing in your life? The most important thing in my life is the Internet because it is how I learn. I get to talk to people from other countries and cultures and learn about them and their ways of life. Any time I want, I can look something up and find countless sources about it. I once spent an hour on Wikipedia learning about semi-trucks. My phone will keep me connected with my mom and brother when I go to college, and it will allow me to stay in contact with my friends who are spreading across the country for university. I am a very social person, and I love learning about new things. One of my best friends lives in England and we always find out new things about the differences between our countries that you don’t see portrayed in media.
your high school? The greatest thing I gained from my K-12 experience has been the opportunity to learn and grow. The environment here allows students to take risks without worry. I am deeply grateful for the excellent staff at the high school. They are endlessly encouraging and make the extra effort to connect with each student. Who is your role model? I have always looked up to my older broth-
What is the most important thing in your life? The most important thing in my life is connection. I truly value all of my connections, from those with people to those with animals, nature, and my interests. Who is the most important person in your life? The most important person in my life is my little sister. She is just now finishing second grade, and I love everything she has brought to my life. I would not trade anything for the countless giggle fits she has started.

Providence Christian School Congratulations Hannah & Leeza! Leeza Lozovik
Hannah Owens I am not sure if that is the career path I want to go down.
Hannah Owens Providence Christian School What are your plans for the 2022-2023 school year? I do not plan to attend college during the 2022-2023 school year. I need a mental break from school work. My plan for next year is to try to get a job at Starbucks and figure out what I want to do for a career. As a child, what was the first thing you wanted to become when you grow up? When I was younger I wanted to be a vet. I still think it would be fun to be a vet, but
