The Cabins at

Pioneer Village T

he Lights and Sounds of Christmas

Christmas holiday celebrations in the Northwest woods were filled with light and sound! There was so much to celebrate with crops in and stored, jars of jams, jellies and pickles put up, a holiday feast prepared and the family gathering to enjoy it all. Homes, churches and meeting houses were filled with light by tallow candles, oil lamps and a roaring fire was kept burning in the grate. Voices were joined in singing beloved hymns and traditional carols, accompanied by instruments such as fiddles, harpsicord, piano and even a simple harmonica played by the young ‘uns! A church service on Christmas morning was attended by all if weather and health allowed. If not, bible readings, hymns and prayers were conducted at home. Gifts were often practical, such as knitted socks, scarves and hats. Father might make wooden toys and games. Mother might sew rag dolls and new shirts and frocks. Boys learned to carve and girls to sew. They would make gifts for their parents such as a pipe for Father and a tea towel for mother. These homemade gifts would not be wrapped, but were put in a stocking on the mantle or at the bottom of the bed. Simple fare adorned every table, much of it from the year’s harvest. Breads, jams and winter vegetables accompanied game such as wild turkey or goose. Taffy was a great treat

for the children to make, and an orange was a luxury that might arrive packed and brought in by stagecoach or wagon from the nearest railroad. We are delighted to invite you back again this year to see the wonderful sights and listen to the holiday music as you walk around the village and step inside the cabins that are warm, bright and filled with holiday cheer.

Olde Fashioned Christmas 2021

The Ticket Booth Your first stop at the park is the ticket booth outside the Tillicum House, where volunteers collect money from the ticket sales. This smiling group of volunteers and gate greeters will start your Olde Fashioned Christmas visit with a cheerful greeting, this program booklet and all the information you need for a magical trip back in time through the Christmases of the past.

The Holeman House - School House Prior to visiting the village, children are encouraged to get a “To Santa Letter template” and write a letter to Santa, and then bring it with you for mailing in the special red Santa mailbox. If you don’t have your letter already written, a limited number of visitors at a time, will be allowed into the schoolhouse where they can sit at an old school desk, write a letter to Santa Claus at the North Pole. Take your finished letters to the Barrett Cabin special Santa mailbox or the Pavilion collection box to be mailed to Santa. Santa and his helpers work hard to see that all letters from children 12 and under are answered in time for Christmas. Don’t forget to write your full name and complete address NEATLY and CLEARLY on your letter so that Santa will know exactly where to send his letter. While in the schoolhouse, ask school marm Bonnie, and her teacher assistants to tell you all about going to school in a one-room schoolhouse in pioneer days. It was a very different experience for both pupils and their teachers! Enjoy the schoolroom decorations that would be typical in an old-fashioned school.

Barrett Post Office Santa needs a lot of help from the Post Office during the busy holiday season. Linda and Jim, along with the other volunteers, will be collecting letters written to Santa Claus. We are encouraging kids to get the letter template and write your letters to Santa before coming to the event. After all the letters get mailed in the special Santa mailbox these Post-Office helpers will get them mailed to the North Pole. We’ve asked Santa, if he has time, to please write back to each child in the weeks leading up to Christmas. We invite you to stop by and visit the Trudder Post and we’re hoping you keep the tradition of writing and mailing your own holiday cards to your friends and family.

Olde Fashioned Christmas 2021

Lopas House, the Print Shop Welcome to the grand reopening of the Lopas Cabin. Known as the Print Shop, James and his team of helpers have spent countless hours over the past two years redoing all the artifact displays, lighting and giving the floor a new fresh look. Traffic flow has been enhanced so visitors can now walk around the Linotype machine. Check out the video explaining the printing process of many days gone by. Juanita, the Christmas decorations look marvelous.

Pioneer Park’s Outhouse It’s okay to stop by Pioneer Village’s outhouse and peek in to see who might be inside. Outhouses were, after all, very much a part of the American West. Actually, to be more succinct, they’re part of all history. However, these old structures, in all their glory, are quickly becoming extinct. Peek inside for a look at restroom facilities in pioneer times, and you’ll see who’s having their private moment. You will really appreciate today's indoor plumbing! Back in pioneer days, people collected their old Sears & Roebuck and Montgomery Ward catalogs for use in the outhouse.

The Jenni House

The Jenni House has been decorated for this year’s theme, showcasing musical instruments. Baerbel along with Selah are ready to welcome visitors to the downstairs of this elegant home. Check out the tree in the front room adorned with festive ornaments. The first stop is the kitchen, where in the past pioneer times, this room would have been filled with busy people cooking and preparing for the special Christmas feast to be enjoyed by family and friends. Appreciate the massive dining table in the back room, this table was cut from one tree and set with fine dishes. We hope you will enjoy our Jenni House as much as we enjoy welcoming you into it.

The Barr Barn

Welcome to the Barr Barn for Olde Fashioned Christmas 2021! Be sure to bring the kids to the barn to enjoy the draft horses on display. Paul and Gail Nelson of Reinbow Ranch can't accommodate visitors on the horse drawn wagon ride this year due to limited spacing. Depending on availability, there may be some other interesting fourlegged animals present with noses to pet. Once again, the Barr Barn will be hosting the sleigh photo booth in the north lean to for a 2021 Christmas picture for you and your guests. While at the Barn, check out the complete draft horse harness collection.

Olde Fashioned Christmas 2021

The Larson House Because of the limited inside space, the Larson cabin, known as the trapper’s cabin, will be only showing off the extensive village scenes in the south windows. This is a magical display and really shows off the lights and sounds of a wonderful wintery scene. Thanks Kay and Beverly for putting together this true labor of love from the Chet Speziale memorial collection.

Van Buren Cabin First National Bank of Ferndale For this year’s Olde Fashioned Christmas, the inside of the bank has been decorated by volunteers from Whatcom Educational Credit Union. How fitting to have the First National Bank of Ferndale decorated by this community minded financial institution. See the money themed decorations as you check out the variety of early banking artifacts. The Van Buren cabin was built in 1879 and was located on Van Buren Road, three miles north of Everson on the Milwaukee railroad. In 1891 it began its life as a post office and it served until 1918. This cabin was also used as a store during this time. It was the original "convenience" store. When the Van Buren cabin came to Pioneer Village it became the "First National Bank of Ferndale". The prize item is a "cannon ball" safe from the old Custer State Bank.

Rogers House, Veteran’s Museum The Rogers House, which was built in 1877 by A. A. Rogers, is home to the American Legion Veteran's Museum. It honors the men and women who have served and are currently serving in all branches of the military. The cabin is decorated by volunteers, under the leadership of Nancy Knapp and Robert Lyles from the local Ferndale legion hall. For the Christmas decorating there is an extensive bell collection in the downstairs area. Many military artifacts are on display also.

Parker House General Store Christmas spirit is bustling at the Parker House General Store! The store offers you the perfect present or maybe you’ll find that unique collectible for someone special.

Come inside and feel the spirit of Christmas that isn’t your typical commercial mayhem found in the mall. Olde Fashioned store clerks are on hand to help you make the perfect selection and can even help you sneak away a treasure find. There’s candy and unique gifts for children of all ages who call this their favorite time of year. Stocked on the shelves are exciting gifts for everyone, with olde fashioned prices, penny candy, and Pioneer Village souvenirs. Store manager Serena Leibrant does a great job of organizing inventory, the volunteers, and the proceeds. All proceeds from store sales go back to fund park projects and ongoing maintenance. The Pharmacy upstairs will be closed this year due to distancing guidelines.

The Shields House All the true sights, sounds and smells of a Pioneer Christmas can be experienced in this majestic home. Louise Sager along with her volunteers will welcome you as you enter the front door. Stroll into the parlor, see the live Christmas tree, and check out the working Concert roller organ. Continue to make your way through the bedroom. Peek into the bathroom to enjoy the displays by Barb Defratas and conclude your visit by taking in the smells of cooking apples in the working kitchen. Make your exit out the back porch door. The Shields House was built on the Old Guide Road south of Wiser Lake in 1885. It was the second building moved to Pioneer Park in 1950 by the Whatcom Old Settlers Association. The two-story Shields house is a monument to craftsmanship of the early pioneers and specifically to Conrad Shields who constructed the house. Cedar trees were cut down, bucked into the proper lengths, and pulled by three ox teams belonging to Shields and his neighbors. Each log, some thirty feet long, were split and mortised and dovetailed so precisely that no nails are needed to hold them together. Weather boarding came from the old Shelter mill on Deer Creek.

Foster House Choo! Choo! Once again, the Foster House will feature Larry Hanson's train collection. This has become a very popular display at Olde Fashioned Christmas. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in the Foster House with even the gnomes getting in on the festivities. Traffic flow will be modified per current guidelines; enter at the front door, make the loop around the train display and exit the south door. Sorry, no upstairs access this year. While here, make sure that you look around the Foster House to see the many early pioneer and Native American artifacts. This cabin also houses many local photographs and Ferndale High yearbooks of many years. Tom and Sue, along with Larry and Joan, are looking forward to seeing everyone who visits the Foster Cabin at Christmas.

The Granary Stop by this log cabin filled with artifacts that would have been used for farming and logging in Pioneer times. Julie invites you to come in and wander around this very realistic and functional cabin in all its festive charm.

The Church

The Granary was built by John Gischer in 1887 on Marine Drive in Birch Bay. Gischer was one of the earliest settlers of the Birch Bay area. It was moved to Pioneer Park in the 1970s. The building was originally intended to be a house but ended up as a granary and now holds many of the tools that Mr. Gischer used on his homestead.

Step inside our wonderful 143-year-old church and sit for a reflective moment in one of the old wooden pews. This Congregational Church was built in 1876 on California Creek, close to the corner of Loomis Trail Road near Blaine. This was the first church built in Whatcom County. Allow the music and the wonderful smells of the woods to captivate your memories of Christmases from your past. Our church has been a sanctuary for Pacific Northwest settlers and pioneers for a very long time. Come enjoy the beautiful music and allow Olde Fashioned Christmas to be the beginning of your family's holiday celebration.

Pioneer Pavilion With distancing restrictions our event can’t accommodate all the activities typically done in the upstairs of the log cabins. This is the first year we have expanded to include the inside area of the Pioneer Pavilion. Masks will be required while inside the building (just like in all the cabins) unless you’re consuming refreshments. Marie and her helpers will serve wrapped cookies and hot beverages to our visitors to warm up with after touring the cabins. It might be cold and chilly outside but here in the Pavilion it’s warm and friendly. Enjoy the hot beverages and delicious cookies donated by local businesses. Check the bulletin board to see who has donated and be sure to thank those businesses next time you visit them. While you eat, listen to the wonderful musicians that donate their time and talents to add to our holiday spirit. Children can step up to the crafts tables to make a snowman ornament, assembled by the Ferndale Legion ladies, a stamped ornament card and see what treasure they can “hook” at the ice fishing booth. Live entertainers will be playing music as you visit the pavilion and last but certainly not least, the famous man dressed all up in a red suit will be situated in the fireplace room. Santa will visit with children and pose for those annual memories made photos.

Olde Fashioned Decorating For each candle, use a cookie cutter to make 10 identical shapes from the wax sheets. Divide the shapes into two stacks of 5. Sandwich a wick between the two stacks, starting at the bottom and extending it beyond the top by at least an inch. Press the sheets together gently. If they don’t stick together, take the wax layers apart and use a hair dryer to gently warm each one before restacking them, adding the wick as instructed above. Trim the wick to about a half-inch. Stand your candle up, shaping the base as needed to make it sit securely.

Cookie Cutter Candles Supplies: • Cookie cutters (choose shapes that can stand up) • Honeycomb wax sheets in various colors (available at craft stores; an 8- by 16-inch sheet will make 1 or 2 candles) • Wicks • Scissors

Christmas Carols! O Holy Night

Let it Snow

Oh holy night! The stars are brightly shining It is the night of the dear Savior’s birth! Long lay the world in sin and error pining Till he appear’d and the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn!

Oh the weather outside is frightful, But the fire is so delightful, And since we’ve no place to go, Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

Fall on your knees Oh hear the angel voices Oh night divine Oh night when Christ was born Oh night divine Oh night divine Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming Here come the wise men from Orient land The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger In all our trials born to be our friend. Truly He taught us to love one another His law is love and His gospel is peace Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother And in His name all oppression shall cease Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we, Let all within us praise His holy name

It doesn’t show signs of stopping, And I’ve bought some corn for popping, The lights are turned way down low, Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! When we finally kiss good night, How I’ll hate going out in the storm! But if you’ll really hold me tight, All the way home I’ll be warm. The fire is slowly dying, And, my dear, we’re still good-bying, But as long as you love me so, Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

White Christmas I’m dreaming of a white Christmas Just like the ones I used to know Where the treetops glisten and children listen To hear sleigh bells in the snow. I’m dreaming of a white Christmas With every Christmas card I write May your days be merry and bright And may all your Christmases be white.

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas Have yourself a merry little Christmas, Let your heart be light From now on, our troubles will be out of sight Have yourself a merry little Christmas, Make the Yule-tide gay, From now on, our troubles will be miles away. Here were are as in olden days, happy golden days of yore. Faithful friends who are dear to us gather near to us once more. Through the years we all will be together If the Fates allow Hang a shining star upon the highest bough. And have yourself a merry little Christmas now.

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer You know Dasher and Dancer And Prancer and Vixen, Comet and Cupid And Donner and Blitzen. But do you recall The most famous reindeer of all? Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer (reindeer) Had a very shiny nose (like a light bulb) And if you ever saw it (saw it) You would even say it glows (like a flash light) All of the other reindeer (reindeer) Used to laugh and call him names (like Pinocchio) They never let poor Rudolph (Rudolph) Play in any reindeer games (like Monopoly) Then one foggy Christmas Eve Santa came to say (Ho Ho Ho) Rudolph with your nose so bright Won’t you guide my sleigh tonight? Then all the reindeer loved him (loved him) And they shouted out with glee (yippee) “Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer (reindeer) You’ll go down in history!” (like Columbus)

Frosty the Snowman Frosty the snowman was a jolly happy soul, With a corncob pipe and a button nose and two eyes made out of coal. Frosty the snowman is a fairy tale, they say, He was made of snow but the children know how he came to life one day. There must have been some magic in that old silk hat they found. For when they placed it on his head he began to dance around. O, Frosty the snowman was alive as he could be, And the children say he could laugh and play just the same as you and me. Thumpetty thump thump, thumpetty thump thump, Look at Frosty go. Thumpetty thump thump, thumpetty thump thump, Over the hills of snow. Frosty the snowman knew the sun was hot that day, So he said, “Let’s run and we’ll have some fun now before I melt away.” Down to the village, with a broom stick in his hand, Running here and there all around the square saying, Catch me if you can. He led them down the streets of town right to the traffic cop. And he only paused a moment when he heard him holler “Stop!” For Frosty the snow man had to hurry on his way, But he waved goodbye saying, “Don’t you cry, I’ll be back again some day.” Thumpetty thump thump, thumpetty thump thump, Look at Frosty go. Thumpetty thump thump, thumpetty thump thump, Over the hills of snow.
