ABKC SEPTEMBER STEERING GROUP MEETING
BY G.SMITH / PICS C.WALKER
ABKC SEPTEMBER
STEERING GROUP MEETING
The late September steering group meeting was one of the largest ever, with guests from JAG and Tal-Ko now included plus John Pike who has offered to set up a linked Drivers Association. Also present as a one off guest was Dan Parker from Zip to discuss the Bambino class. Unfortunately Colin Wright had to attend to an urgent business matter so Nigel Edwards
CIRCUIT ROUND-UP
Starting with a round up from the circuits the numbers seem to be holding up well and indeed the MSA reported an increase in race entries and permits from last year. High points include having an extra 60 NKF competitors at Wombwell boosting their last entry to 110, having 23 KZ UK entries for ABkC Super 4 at Kimbolton and a big entry of Honda Cadets at Bayford forming half the total entry there. Paul Klaassen and his team have received congratulations from the CIK for finding the cheat engine in KF. Rowrah have completed their ÂŁ60k Lets Go Karting training building, a massive investment for Cumbria Kart Club.
chaired the meeting. Simon Blunt, the new MSA General Secretary, and Cheryl Lynch represented the MSA on this occasion.

There have been far too many incidents involving abuse this year, either between competitors or their parents, or between competitors and officials. There are on going cases, some awaiting completion of police investigations. The MSA representatives said that they have zero tolerance, and that they would fully support any official who has received abuse. There was some concern that if a PG licence is suspended, another parent can take another out. There is a move afoot to

ensure teams have entrants licences and use them. The 2015 seminars will have a section on judicial matters increase in participation including interpersonal skills. There this year from last‌ was also a discussion on IKR, and it competitor entries rose was noted that one circuit has moved to having a control tyre to cut down by 1,018 the costs of open formulae. All agreed that we must make MSA racing more attractive and reduce costs, and the MSA said they are investigating having stronger links with the National Karting Association.
There has been over 3%
DRIVERS ASSOCIATION
John Pike, who is a KZ driver, was thanked for offering his services to set up a Drivers Association. He will develop a website and Facebook page and Richard DeHavillande has offered to help with advice. Strong links will be established to the ABkC and MSA websites to ensure drivers are informed of upcoming regulation changes etc. John will continue to be invited to the steering group meetings, and consideration given to including a drivers’ rep in the constitution for the 2015 AGM.
RECORDINGS
A proposal to ban competitors or team members from recording comments by officials, or during a judicial inquiry, was requested. It was agreed to propose an amendment to the Gold Book Appendix 4 so that it covered all clubs, rather than having each club having to amend SRs.
Simon Blunt informed the group that there had been an over 3% increase in participation this year from last which is really good news. Short circuit kart (including NatSKA, Endurance, Tyro and Bambino) event and entry numbers between January and August show an increase relative to the same period in 2013. By the end of August 2014 there were 308 events, up 42 on the same period last year. Meanwhile competitor entries rose by 1,018 to 21,119. He also announced a reduction of the cost of the ARKS Pack. This move was welcomed by the group and they further urged the MSA to consider using on line methods in future to reduce cost and complexity of getting started. Discussions on the need for medicals for kart drivers are still under discussion. There are still on going discussions on adopting the CIK Historic kart regulations with some modifications, and following the re-launch of Tyro as Clubman, a list of compatible engines for drivers who would be able to take out a licence without a medical or ARKS Test. It was agreed to set up a working party meeting to review the actions required for class homologations for 2017. The MSA was also requested to find a way to publicise regulations that have been amended through consultation and agreed at Council, without waiting for the next quarterly magazine insert. The review of Child Protection guidelines (now called DBS instead of CRB) is still on-going. The licences to early September were 3734 and packs sold were 463 (compared with totals for 2013 of 3986 and 852). It was announced that 41 warning letters have been issued to competitors having too many penalties at meetings, and three licence suspensions enforced. The MSA is now able to give the real statistics on the number racing in each class and perhaps these will be publicised in due course. Currently Honda Cadet is the biggest class followed by senior Rotax Max, and Shenington the track with the most entries, followed by Whilton Mill. Regrettably 97 returns have not been made by certain clubs, and those clubs that are not sending their class data back are urged to do so otherwise a false idea of the size of some of the smaller classes may be made. With more good news from the MSA they said that officials attending the seminars next year will have their mileage expenses paid, and their lunch. A letter to clubs clarifying the track limit rules is still to go out. Jess Fack is collating both the MSA surveys and the ABkC club survey results and it was noted that the Lets Go Karting brand will be re-launched. ABkC Website, 2015 O & E Plates, Grants to clubs The ABkC has commissioned a new website which should be on line soon. ABkC and ARKS will be at Kartmania along with representatives from the MSA.

ARDIGÒ NAILS IT AT LAST PROTAGONISTS

At last, the driver from Italy, in force with Tony Kart, manages to get the gearbox class title that he looked to for years, and with this important win he rewards Vortex with its first KZ win. In the end, the only one who manages to pass is De Conto, but Ardigò stays calm cool and collected, and waits until his tyres are at the top to re-take the lead and pull away form his rivals, pulling an important gap in a few laps showing them that this time he would leave very little to others. Camponeschi, as usual, is fantastic, and in the WSK round if it wasn’t for a mechanical fault he would have most likely have got the results he deserved. With this conviction, Flavio grabs pole start on Friday, confirming once more his skill and the feeling he has with this circuit. He drops some traction at the start in both heats and has to give way to Ardigò first and Dreezen later for pole start. He grabs back second place in prefinal rewarding spectators with an all “green” final start. So, if Ardigò manages to pull away at the right time, Camponeschi has to hold off pressure from Dreezen, Torsellini and De Conto. Vice champion title for Camponeschi is very important, very satisfactory for him and for his team.

ZIP KART 50 ANNIVERSARY th
BHKC TIM NORWOOD’S ACCOUNT OF ZIP EARLY YEARS
78
VROOM UK
It’s a little known fact that preceding the successful Zip Kart business there was a successful racing bicycle business. Mark Hines founded ‘Hines of Finchley’ after he was demobbed from the army having learned his engineering trade in the Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers. Hines of Finchley produced racing bike frames one of which competed in the Tour de France and finished in a podium position. The cycle business evolved into a kart business through the influence of Mark’s son, Martin, who had an interest in racing. However, initially Martin wanted to build and race a grass track motorcycles and progress to speedway but Mark’s wife was set against Martin being involved in speedway so a pair
of early Trokarts fitted with Clinton E65 engines were purchased. These were raced, mainly at Rye House, by Martin. Mark Hines thought that there may be a business opportunity in supplying parts for karts so ‘Marts Karts’ was born though at this point it was as much about paying for racing as making profits. This changed in 1963 when an opportunity to buy out Pat Warnock’s karting business arose and the fact that Mark had taken on the lease and become the chairman of the Rye House track club. ‘Mart’s Karts’ became the main family business - initially as a supplier and manufacturer of kart parts. Kart manufacture started as a result of another buy out. A Class 1 ‘Zipper’ kart had been designed and produced by Alec Bottons (who had been nicknamed ‘Zipper’ at school and subsequently went on to design the successful ‘Vixen’ formula IV and formula Ford). Mark bought up the design and jigs and so started production of karts. Early in production, and still with input from Alec Bottons, the kart was modified, renamed the Zip MkII and became the production model – and proved to be a great success with karters and the karting media. To build on the success of the MkII the next production model was named the class one Zip ‘International’ (left) to give the kart a broader appeal. Effectively the International was an evolution of the MkII developed with the assistance of British Team Member and friend Buzz Ware. This, for Marts Karts, was the breakthrough chassis and soon became a popular choice for the top racers not only in the UK but orders came from Europe. Such was the demand that a backlog developed as production bottlenecks caused a long delivery wait. This was some achievement set against the dominance of the Class I scene by the Italian Tecno and Birel karts at that time. By now the mid-sixties had arrived and a karting boom was taking place. In response to this and because of the success of the International, Marts Karts began expanding and had taken over the Tecno workshop at Rye House Kart Circuit (having also taken on the Tecno Karts UK concession) and still maintained the shop in Finchley. The Rye House workshop and factory was run by Martin and became the assembly and testing base for new karts and the Finchley shop was the retail and mail order outlet for parts and a social hub for karters. Production of kart parts continued and a mail order aspect was introduced. In 1966 a class IV gearbox kart began development. The race proved front end of the International was married to a newly designed rear to carry the extra weight of the gearbox engines. The initial kart, the Zip Martin (left), had a mixed reception. ‘Karting Magazine”
