Give yourself or your child an unforgettable experience with music this summer at the VSO School of Music. We offer a variety of week-long programs throughout July and August specially-designed for all age levels and abilities. Programs for children include creative activities to introduce children to music or help them progress on instruments they may already play. For high-school age students and adults, we offer programs in strings, brass, piano and voice, and a one-of a kind jazz workshop.

SUMMER PROGRAMS for Children (Ages 3-11)
A strong start is crucial to the enjoyment of listening to, playing, and creating music and to developing strong lifelong musical skills. Summer classes for children aged 3-11 are designed to let each child explore their own musical imagination and abilities, in preparation for beginning music lessons in the fall, or just for fun.
Kids String Start-up Beginning String Camps for Violin and Cello Monday, July 8 - Friday, July 12 9:30am - 12:30pm Recommended for: Ages 5-11, Complete Beginners to RCM / Suzuki level 4 Instructors: Rebecca Rittich, Nicki Stieda and Mary Thomson Meet the Instructors on page 14 Whether your child would like to try the violin or cello or has already started and would like to improve under the guidance of the VSO School beginning string specialists, these classes offer something for all beginning levels. Complete Beginners will learn the basic techniques of playing and holding the instrument and engage in fun musical games. Beginners may join the other groups in a performance at the end of the week. Suzuki/RCM Level 1-2 students will work on technique, a group piece tailored to their level, and a large ensemble piece, to be performed at the end of the week. Suzuki/RCM Level 3-4 students will receive technical instruction, an introduction to music history, work on a piece with other students at their level, and prepare to join other string players in a large group piece, to be performed at the end of the week. Rental instruments for the class can be arranged through the school for an additional fee. Please inquire for details at the time of registration. Colourstrings World Music Explorers Camp Monday, July 15 - Friday, July 19 9:30am - 12:15pm Recommended for: Children 3-7yrs. Split into three groups by age. No previous musical experience required. Instructors: Laura Hasthorpe, Melanie Barker and Stephanie Swinnard Meet the Instructors on page 14 Colourstrings is an innovative music education approach from Europe that synthesizes the best of all music-learning methods and seeks to give children the skills and tools to develop a social, emotional and artistic relationship with music for life. Colourstrings instructors receive rigorous and intensive training that is currently only available in Europe. Colourstrings World Music Explorers Camp integrates the worlds of music, movement and visual art for young children to learn to express themselves using Colourstrings educational principles. Through guided improvisation and working together in a group, children will build core musical skills, as the ‘explorers’ go on a musical adventure that weaves singing, movement, percussion instruments, musical games, drama and art into a traditional story from around the world, the tale ending with a short performance on the last day. Kids Summer Music Sampler Tuesday, August 6 - Friday, August 9 9:00am - 12:00pm Recommended for: Children age 6-8. Beginners: No previous musical experience required. Instructors: Holly Duff and Ross Curran Meet the Instructors on page 14 This activity combines music, movement, drama, and speech in the ‘Orff Approach’ to music education, which seeks to incorporate learning music into a child’s natural world of play. Specially-designed for children at the beginning grades of elementary school, this engaging class presents basic music fundamentals through fun games and activities, imaginative storytelling incorporating instruments and movement, and introduces an ‘instrument of the day’ from the orchestra. Children will create crafts that compliment musical ideas and stories, and will leave the class with musical confidence and an up-close-and-personal experience of an instrument they may like to learn. Meet the Violin Camp Monday, August 26 - Friday, August 30 9:30am - 10:30am Recommended for: Children age 5-7. No previous musical experience required. Instructors: Rebecca Rittich and Nicki Stieda Meet the Instructors on page 14 Whether your child would just like to try out the violin or is preparing to start a school string program in the fall, this introductory class gets kids started off the right way, under the guidance of VSO School beginning string specialists. Participants will learn the basic fundamentals of posture, holding the instrument, creating a nice tone and playing in a group. Concepts of string playing and music performance in general will be introduced in fun and sociable musical games. Give your child a head start on the violin, increase their confidence in the instrument, and help them to discover their path to musical success with this encouraging and supportive camp. Explore your voice, find your ‘groove’ or discover your inspiration this summer in classes for brass, jazz, piano, voice and strings. High-schoolaged players and adults can choose from a variety of opportunities to learn, listen, play and explore this summer, under the guidance of some of the best performers and teachers in Canada. Bring your aspirations, and we’ll do the rest.
Summer Song School Tuesday, July 2 - Monday, July 8 9:00am - 5:30pm Open to singers ages 14 and up, including adult singers and collaborative pianists. Instructors: Diane King, Wendy Gorling, Helen Hall; Guest Masterclass with Rena Sharon Meet the Instructors on page 14 Bring your passion for singing, polish and perfect your skills, and make your performance an unforgettable experience at this intensive 7-day workshop designed to help you improve your vocal technique, stage presence, dramatic interpretation and collaborative musical skills. Work on music in the genre of your choice: opera, musical theatre, art song, and classics from the American Songbook. Along with individual coaching, students will be paired in duets and small ensembles for additional collaborative work together. The week culminates in a performance for friends and family in beautiful Pyatt Hall. A unique part of this course includes a playful exploration of what it means to be an actor, embody a text, and tell your musical ‘story’, helping you connect deeply to your to your song and to the audience in a way that goes beyond the music. Each singer should prepare and bring a minimum of 3 songs from the genres of your choice to be coached and performed during the course. Requirements: All participants are welcome but must perform a placement audition, either in–person or by submitting a DVD or CD recording. Placement auditions will be held at the VSO School on June 2 and recording/videos must be submitted by that date. Participants should prepare 2 contrasting pieces of their choice.

Strings in the Evenings String Class and Beginning Chamber Music for Adults Monday, July 8 - Friday, July 12 6:30pm – 8:45pm Recommended for: Adult violinists, violists and cellists playing at RCM grade 1+ Instructors: Rebecca Rittich, violin; Mary Thomson, cello Meet the Instructors on page 14 If you are an adult amateur string player looking for a sociable way to improve your skills, this relaxed evening “camp” offers the chance to play in duos, trios or larger chamber groups, rehearsing specially-arranged music tailored to your level, in a relaxed and encouraging environment. Each evening begins with a group session, with tips from our experienced VSO School faculty on improving technique, tone and ensemble skills. Participants will then move into small groups (duos, trios, etc.) for the second part of the evening, working together with drop-in coaching by the instructors. SUMMER PROGRAMS Meet the Instructors
Beginning String Camps Instructors Violinist REBECCA RITTICH received her Suzuki certification from Queens University and enjoys teaching and working with all ages and levels of ability. A member of the BC Registered Music Teachers Association, her students have succeeded with top honours in R.C.M. exams, at local festivals and perform with the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra. She holds a B. M. Degree from the University of Victoria and has continuing studies in Europe. Violinist NICKI STIEDA holds a degree in violin performance from UBC. She continued her studies in the Netherlands, where she became a member of Netherlands Radio Orchestra. In Vancouver, Nicki plays regularly with the VSO and the Vancouver Opera Orchestra, among many other groups. A dedicated teacher, Nicki is actively involved with the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra and coaches ensembles from Suzuki classes to chamber music. Cellist MARY THOMSON shares over 20 years of experience as a highly successful teacher. She has coached chamber music workshops in Canada and in France, has been an adjudicator for string festivals and has taught at several summer music camps including the Japan/ Seattle Suzuki Institute and the Quiring Summer Festival. In addition to teaching, Mary is a highly skilled arranger, tailoring pieces specifically for her students. Her published cello scale book has now surpassed 1000 units sold in Canada.
Colourstrings World Music Camp Instructors Faculty member LAURA HASTHORPE is a certified Colourstrings music kindergarten teacher and was the first early childhood specialist to bring this ground-breaking education approach to Canada. A professional violist, she is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, where she hold the degrees of Bachelor of Arts in Music and a Certificate of Postgraduate Studies in performance with distinction. Visual Artist MELANIE BARKER studied at Capilano University, winning a coveted scholarship to study figurative drawing and sculpture at the renowned Arts Students League in NYC. She has taught art classes at Emily Carr, as well as continuing education for the Site Santa Fe Contemporary Art Museum. She serves as a Vancouver Art Gallery Docent and is the founder of the Squamish Lantern festival. Children’s theater instructor STEPHANIE SWINNARD is an Early Childhood Music and Movement Educator and has served as the Junior Program Director for the Chilliwack School of Performing Arts for nine years. She has an extensive background in early childhood education and development and is a frequent attendee of national and international conferences.

Kids Summer Music Sampler Instructors Pianist and educator HOLLY DUFF incorporates a passion for storytelling in her work for young students in the music and movement classes she has taught in two provinces. She is a long- standing piano faculty member of the Langley Community Music School and at the Jean Lyons School of Music, where she teaches both piano and preschool Orff music classes. Holly holds a Bachelor of Music in piano performance from the University of Western Ontario and an Associate of the Victoria Conservatory of music in Piano Pedagogy. Woodwind multi-instrumentalist ROSS CURRAN is an Orff-certified educator with over 25 years of experience teaching and performing in the Lower Mainland. He has been an Instructor for the Music Component of the Early Childhood Education Program for the North Vancouver School Board and other institutions, and has been a faculty member of the Langley Community Music School since 1981. Ross holds a B. Mus. degree from the University of Victoria.
Summer Song School Instructors Chair of the VSO School of Music Vocal Department, DIANE KING, holds degrees in Voice Performance from UBC and the Guildhall School of Music. She has performed extensively in Europe and Canada in opera, musical theatre, oratorio and recital. A well-known opera lecturer and highly sought-after voice teacher, Diane has successfully taught students of all ages and abilities for over 25 years. Her passion for the power of the voice encourages students to unlock their potential and fulfill their singing dreams. Theatre Movement Specialist WENDY GORLING is a graduate of the prestigious Ecole Le Coq in Paris and has received six Vancouver Jessie theatre awards. She teaches physical theatre and acting at Studio 58 and Langara College, and has assisted Bard on the Beach, the Goh Ballet, the Arts Club and the Victoria Opera. Featured in the book Theatre Without Borders as a master teacher, she was inducted into British Columbia’s Entertainment Hall of Fame. UBC Professor RENA SHARON, winner of the Rio de Janeiro International Voice Competition Best Pianist award, has performed with many world-renowned artists. Artistic Director of the leadingedge Vancouver International Song Institute, her pioneering SONGFIRE Theatre Alliance focuses on international initiatives for Social Change. She has recorded for Marquis, Finlandia, Atma, CBC-5000, and others. An Associate of the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies, she is a recipient of the UBC Dean of Arts award. Mid-Summer Brass Workshop Instructors A Touch of Brass brass quintet is expert in virtually every style of music and is in demand all over BC for both recitals and educational clinics. The members of the quintet—Tom Shorthouse and Jim Littleford, trumpets; Ben Kinsman, French horn; Jeremy Berkman, trombone; and David Sabourin, tuba and euphonium—have established distinguished individual as performers, careers as teachers and clinicians and also as professional performers in the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Opera Orchestra, and many ensembles throughout the province, including some of Vancouver’s finest Jazz Ensembles.
Jazz Workshop Instructors Bassist and VSO School Jazz Department Chair JODI PROZNICK is a Juno-nominated artist and educator known throughout Canada for her dazzling performance style and passionate commitment to jazz education. The winner of numerous national jazz awards, she performs and records regularly with Canada’s finest jazz musicians and is highly sought-after as a clinician and educator. Jodi holds a degree from McGill University and a Master’s Degree in Education from Simon Fraser University. Trumpeter, pianist, drummer and composer BRAD TURNER is a Juno Award-winning artist much in demand with the most prominent jazz artists in Canada and across North America. As a leader, Turner has released five albums several of which have garnered prestigious industry awards or nominations. Guitarist, Composer and arranger BILL COON is a Juno-nominated artist who has worked with numerous jazz artists. His arrangements can be heard on numerous recordings and have been performed throughout the world. He holds a degree from Concordia University, where he later joined the faculty, leading the jazz guitar ensemble and teaching jazz arranging. Combo Coaches and Masterclass Leaders include: Pianist MILES BLACK, who has worked with a diverse array of ‘greats’, from the Vancouver Symphony to Maynard Ferguson, among many others; Saxophonist CAMPBELL RYGA who has received three Juno Awards and a Grammy nomination; Drummer JESSE CAHILL, who performs and records regularly with many of Vancouver’s finest jazz groups and across Canada, and holds a B. Mus with distinction in Jazz performance from McGill University; Vocalist STEVE MADDOCK, one of Canada’s most versatile vocal talents, appearing with diverse groups from top jazz ensembles to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and is on the Jazz Faculty at Capilano University; Vocal Ensemble Conductor KELLY PROZNICK, the Choral Director and Head of Fine and Performing Arts Department at New Westminster School, and who works with diverse choral groups throughout Vancouver.

RCM Piano Exam Prep Class Instructors ALAN CRANE, Piano Faculty Chair, is also Coordinator of the Piano Program at the Langley Community Music School. A member of the College of Examiners of the Royal Conservatory of Music, his students consistently win awards in music festivals and earn high marks on their RCM examinations. He holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Piano Performance from the University of Western Ontario and UBC, respectively, and is a co-director of West Coast Chamber Music. A graduate of the Juilliard School, KEIKO ALEXANDER served as Chair of the Piano Department of the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, where she also formed the Alexis Piano Trio with members of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. She performs regularly as a soloist and chamber musician in Canada, the United States, and Japan, and is a highly-sought after adjudicator for provincial, national and international festivals and competitions. RITA ATTROT has performed recitals in the Maritime provinces, with the Appassionata Trio and the Erato Ensemble, has served as principal pianist in concerts throughout Vancouver, Victoria and the Lower Mainland, and can be heard live on a release from the Glenn Gould Studio. Head of the Piano Department at the B.C. Conservatory of Music, she holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Victoria and a Master of Music degree from the University of Western Ontario. ALINE BANNO served on the faculty of the Vancouver Community Music School, taught elementary school classes as a music specialist in the Lower Mainland, and her students continually achieve high marks on their RCM Examinations and festivals. Aline holds a Bachelor of Music from UBC and Professional Teaching Certificate from the Faculty of Education with special training in music education and the Carl Orff method, and serves on the College of Examiners for the Royal Conservatory of Music as a Senior Examiner. RCM Piano Exam Prep Class Instructors continued DR. CARLA DODEK held positions at Rice University and at Houston Community College and has performed extensively as soloist, chamber musician and recitalist in Canada, the USA, England and Switzerland. She a holds Bachelor of Music (UVic), Master of Music (Manhattan School of Music), and Doctor of Musical Arts (Rice University) degrees as well as the Licentiateship from the Royal Academy of Music (UK) and the Associateship from the Royal Conservatory of Music (Toronto), all in piano performance. BERNARD DUERKSEN is an experienced recitalist, soloist and chamber musician, and performs regularly in Vancouver. He was invited to perform as a collaborative pianist in the International Schubert Conference and Festival at the University of Victoria, has made recordings for CBC radio and is also an accomplished organist. His students are frequent prize winners in festivals and in international competitions. He holds a Master of Music degree from UBC. HELEN HALL has held positions as Vocal Accompanist and Piano Instructor at the University of Victoria, Piano Department Head at the Chilliwack Academy of Music, and Pianist for the Opera Studio at the Vancouver Academy of Music. She is also on the faculty of Vancouver Community College. Her students have won awards at both the local and provincial levels. She holds a B. Mus. in Piano Performance from Acadia University and an M.A. in Musicology from the University of Victoria. LAYTUAN TAN’s students consistently receive first place awards and high honors in music festivals and RCM examinations and have received scholarships to attend music programs in the United Kingdom. She has been a featured soloist with many Vancouver chamber groups and festivals. She holds a Master of Music degree from the New England Conservatory and a Bachelor of Music Degree from the University of South Carolina and serves as a member of the College of Examiners of the Royal Conservatory of Music.

REGISTRATION & SCHOOL POLICIES Registration All registrations will be on a first-come-first-served basis. A student will be registered only when fees for a summer session have been received in full. All summer sessions have minimum enrollment requirements which must be met in order for the class to take place. If you have registered for a class that does not meet its minimum enrollment, you will be notified at least three weeks ahead of the scheduled date and fees paid will be fully refunded. Instructors are subject to change.
Payments Payment may be made by cash, Cheque, Visa, Mastercard or Interac.
Withdrawals & Refunds Capacity at summer sessions is limited. Your tuition payment guarantees your spot. If you need to withdraw after registering, if another student is waiting to take your place, your tuition fee will be refunded. If another student cannot take the spot, then fees paid will be transferred to a School credit, for your use in the following term or year. No credits will be issued if a student withdraws from a group class after it has started.

Drop-off & Parking There is a parkade underneath the VSO School of Music, which has three drop-off and pick-up spaces on the P1 level and a limited number of pay parking spots on the P2 level. The entrance to the parkade is directly beneath the large red square window, on Seymour Street. An elevator can then be taken directly up to the School. There is additional parking located directly across the street, as well as parking meters along Seymour Street.
Transit The VSO School of Music is conveniently located within easy walking distance from Canada Line, Expo Line and Millennium Line Skytrain Stations. Numerous buses run on Seymour and Granville Streets (4, 7, 10, 16, 17, 50, N9, N10 and N17).
