Early Childhood & Youth Programs

ColourStrings Programs Colourstrings is an innovative music education approach from Europe that builds strong musical foundations, beginning with children’s earliest musical experiences, and taking them all the way through to instrumental study. The VSO School of Music is currently the only school in Western Canada offering this certified program.

Parents and caregivers participate in classes for age groups from 3–14mnths to 2–3yrs. From the 3–4yr age group upwards, children participate in the classes independently of parents. Classes are progressive, and children are encouraged to attend all 3 terms, starting in September. Each class size is limited to 11–14 children, based on age. Music Composition Courses & Lessons

What is a composer? If you’ve ever felt like the piece you are listening to or practicing is boring and you want to write your own, you’re a composer. — Edward Top, VSO Composer-in-Residence

Composition courses and lessons at the VSO School of Music are designed to access the musical creativity in all students. Whether you are 8 or 88 years old, don’t read notes, or an advanced composer with developed theoretical skills, or just seeking to enjoy your creative musical side, composition can be a new way of learning about the inner working of music and expressing yourself through the language of music. Enrolling in a course does not require you to take any exams, although towards the end of the course there will be a performance and/or recording made of the compositions developed.

One-to-One or Semi-Private (2 students) Composition Lessons This option is best suited for students wanting to work in an accelerated manner, or whose schedule does not allow them to attend a group class. The student is expected to work independently on their compositions at home to discuss at each lesson. The more theoretical knowledge the student has, the more they will benefit from private composition lessons. Fees: Private lesson fees: $75 per hour; $56.25 per 45 min.; $37.50 per 30 min Semi-private: $40 per hour

Private Lessons continued... Lessons with Visiting Guest Faculty are scheduled based on availability and only with the recommendation of a student’s regular instructor. Fees for visiting artists vary and are available upon request.

Lesson Attendance 1. Student Absences If a student is aware of an upcoming absence — eg. vacation — the student should inform the Registrar at the time of registration and the number of lessons can be adjusted. If a student cancels a lesson with more than 48 hours’ notice, every effort will be made to make-up the lesson. If a lesson cannot be rescheduled under these circumstances, then a School credit will be issued. If a student cancels a lesson with less than 48 hours’ notice to the Registrar AND the Instructor, the Instructor is not obligated to make up the lesson and no credit will be issued. Excessive cancellations may jeopardize a student’s privilege to make-up lessons and/or credits. 2. Instructor Absences All of our Faculty are active performers in the field. From time to time, their performance schedules may necessitate rescheduling a lesson. If an instructor is absent, every effort will be made to provide a make-up lesson at a time that is suitable to both the student and the instructor. If the instructor is unable to make up a lesson, the student will receive a credit to be applied to future lessons or classes.

Holidays & Closures The School is closed on all statutory holidays and VSB and CSF Winter and Spring holidays. Please check www.vsoschoolofmusic.ca for information on holidays and other important dates. Statutory holidays are taken into account in the number of lessons booked at the time of registration. Lessons will not take place on these dates. Private lessons missed due to a School closure, such as a snow day, will be made up if possible.

Changing Instructors It is highly recommended that students do not change instructors during the school year, in order to avoid a negative impact on their progress. For changes that occur during the school year, the Registrar must confirm approval before any transfer can be made.

Withdrawals & Refunds Tuition and fees are non-refundable. If a student needs to withdraw from lessons or a class before the course has started, then any fees paid will be transferred to a School credit, for use in the following term or year. No credits will be issued if a student withdraws from a group class after it has started.
