Join a jazz combo (small groups of 4–7 players) under the guidance of the acclaimed VSO School Jazz faculty. Participants are grouped by level and interest and can choose to focus on jazz standards or a particular genre. Combos are given free practice time in addition to coaching sessions.
Entry to the Combos is by video audition. Please visit our website for guidelines to submit your video.

The VSO School of Music invites you to audition for the VSO SoM Honour Youth Jazz Combo, a group for outstanding young jazz musicians in the region. In the great tradition of small group jazz, 4–7 advanced high school age musicians will have the opportunity to develop their playing through rehearsal, performance, workshops and study of classic jazz repertoire.
Placement will be at the discretion of the instructor based on a video audition submission. Please visit our website for guidelines to submit your video.
JUNIOR JAZZ PIANO
Sundays, 11:30am–12:30pm 10 weeks per term
(see pg.4 for term dates) Recommended for: Children age 8–16yrs, who have been studying piano for 3+ years Instructor: John Stetch Fee per term: $190 (regular) / $175 (VSOSoM discount — see pg.33)
Bach, Mozart, Beethoven – they all improvised a lot, and didn’t wait until they finished 10 years of RCM to do so! Children are flexible, open-minded and not afraid to ask questions, which is why it’s a perfect time to introduce jazz and musical creativity as a complement to classical studies.
