THE VSOSoM MENTORSHIP INSTITUTE

The VSO SoM Mentorship Institute is designed for aspiring young musicians who aim to make music their passion and profession. There are two programs, one for high-school age students and one for students who have completed high school.

Young Artist Program

This customized program leverages the unique benefits of our close collaboration with the VSO to advance and deepen young emerging talent.

Performance Prep Program

New this year is a ‘residency’ for a maximum of 10 gap year students who show a high level of musical talent, and require preparation to progress to higher education in music performance. This one-of-a-kind Performance Prep Program is designed to offer a broad range of opportunities for emerging young musicians. Please contact the registration team for information on becoming a VSOSoM Mentorship Institute member. New students can begin at any time in the school year and enroll a term at a time. The VSO School of Music faculty numbers over 100 of the best artists and educators in Canada, including many members of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Private lessons are available in all orchestral and jazz instruments, traditional world music instruments, piano, guitar and voice. Contact our registration team to find current availability, and allow them to match you with the best instructor for your or your child’s needs and aspirations.

Students taking a full year of private lessons are offered free tickets to specially-selected VSO concerts!

PATHWAY TRANSITIONAL LESSONS

Full year program of lessons, musicianship & small group instruction, Sep – Jun

Recommended for: Children age 5–7yrs, looking for a smooth transition from general group music classes to private instrumental instruction Fee for year: $1,890 (includes 20min private lesson, 20min musicianship tutorial & 30min small group each week)

Pathways is a unique way of beginning piano, violin, guitar, recorder or zheng with the use of both individual and small group instruction, complemented with a fun and interactive introduction to music theory. Taught by highly qualified Early Childhood music instructors, each bringing their own methodological focus to their teaching, and supported by an assistant. Children attend Pathway lessons for one school year, and then “graduate” to individual private lessons.

SUZUKI STRINGS PROGRAM

Full year program of lessons & group classes, Sep – Jun

Recommended for: Children age 5–12yrs, who have completed a Suzuki Prep class Fee for year: $1,690–$3,130 (includes 30–60min private lessons & 45min group class each week)

The Suzuki method is based on the concept that children learn to play musical instruments as naturally as they learn to speak, focusing on listening, repetition and memorization. Suzuki students take part in a private lesson and group class each week, supported by parents in the classroom and at home.
