Anodes Features and use. Stray currents in sea water may cause even serious corrosive phenomena; these sacrificial anodes provide effective protection of submersed metal parts. The full protective action of the anode is achieved only if: - the anode is always tightly connected to the metal mass to protect; if installed in direct contact with this mass, the surface contact area between anode and mass must be perfectly clean and free of any paints or rust.

- the water-exposed surface of the anode is perfectly clean and free of any paint - when the boat is launched after a haul out, any rust is properly removed from the water-exposed surfaces of the anode so that galvanic currents can pass through and ensure its sacrificial action. - A laboratory galvanostatic test is carried out for anode sample. A passing through continuous anodic current source, changing in the four days of the test, is used to check the wear-out condition and the electrochemical efficiency . They correspond to the values provided for by Standard DNV.Rp B. 401 (750-780 Ah/kg) ensuring full protection of metal parts (different values would mean partial or over protection). Moreover, controls on the chemical composition of the anode materials confirm their correspondence to US Standard Mil Spec.A.18001-J. - The larger and larger use of plastic materials on boats and the â&#x20AC;&#x153;passive protectionâ&#x20AC;? of paints applied to modern engines considerably reduce metal surface areas to protect and thus the anode consumption. This is also influenced by water salinity or by the nearby presence of other masses (boats, submersed bodies, piers with metal parts, etc.). So a proper protection does not necessarily mean a serious anode wear-out. Make sure, periodically and regularly, that all metal parts are not rusted and replace the anode when its weight is lower than 80% of its original weight. AVAILABLE RANGE: ]1) ZINC anodes (MIL-A-18001K specifications) for salt water 2) ALUMINIUM anodes (MIL-A-24779 specifications) for salt and mixed water. Some marine engine manufacturers supply aluminium anodes on their engines. 3) MAGNESIUM anodes (AZ-91-D specifications) for fresh water, only.
