he message was clear on the bridal catwalks at White Gallery London, Barcelona and New York this season, details are back – SHO P and back in a big way. From fabulously frothy ruffles to larger-thanlife bows, 3D flowers to billowing feather capes – even the more minimalist ‘Meghan effect’ saw designers favouring statement shoulders, slinky slits and epic, princess-inspired skirts. Feeling inspired already? We’ve rounded up the key looks and our favourite dresses from the shows on page 23. Believe me when I say, it’s quite simply dress-shopping heaven. If you’re tying the knot abroad, the new-season looks also punctuate our guide on where to wed across Europe, the Caribbean and beyond. We’ve picked out some of the best dresses to suit your big-day location, whether it’s an achingly chic hotel in Paris or a barefoot beach celebration in Bali. And speaking of travel, Instagram addicts (surely all of us then?) should check out our round-up of the 10 most photoworthy locations on the planet. Read all about it on page 127 – hello, dream honeymoon! Enjoy the issue!

REAL LIFE

BECKY HEALY Becky and George said ‘I do’ on the Ibizan coast after “falling in love” with the sea views from their beachfront venue, Elixir. In keeping with the island’s relaxed vibes, the wedding party shared tapas while a saxophonist played in the background. As for the dress, after trying on countless styles that weren’t quite right, the bride’s mother happened to bump into the woman who had made her own gown back in 1993. “It was fate – I had to have her make my dress too!” exclaims Becky, who designed it herself. 12

BOWS

From embellished loop details and monochrome back fastenings to statement shoulder features, feminine bows are back in a very modern way. Their newfound exaggerated proportions and sculptural shapes demand to be noticed. While many brides will embrace the new power bow, this trend can also work for more demure dressers. How? Opt for a delicate organza back knot, à la Anna Kara, or a romantic belt tie, as seen on the Rosa Clará and Jesus Peiro runways at Barcelona Bridal Week.

Textural trimmings add drama to capes, skirts and necklines The most opulent of finishing touches, feathers have long been a bridal fashion favourite, with full ostrich feather skirts and marabou heels creating a luxe look. However, this season sees the touchy feely stuff applied tactically, with fine plumes added as skirt fringing (Savin London) or fluffy fronds adding patterned texture to superhero-worthy capes ( Eliza Jane Howell at White Gallery London).

Embroidered and appliqué blooms add a touch of whimsy Why restrict yourself to a bouquet when you can actually wear flowers too? Dreamy up close and from afar, this intricate look manages to be both ultra-modern and unashamedly romantic at the same time. Seen as graduating bodice detailing at Viktor & Rolf Mariage and all-over embellishment at Demetrios, the threedimensional quality comes alive when combined with floral hues, as seen at Marco & Maria and Alejandro Resta.

This spring, all eyes were on the Duchess of Sussex-to-be as she redefined the classic wedding dress. Almost austere in its simplicity, Meghan’s luminuous long-sleeved, boat-necked Givenchy was also achingly chic. It seems, too, that designers across the bridal world had predicted a return to refined minimalism, with Halfpenny London’s 1990s-inspired slips, Sassi Holford’s sleek columns and Cymbeline’s unfussy tulle skirts.

RUFFLES For the bride-to-be who’s always dreamed of wearing a dress that has to be negotiated through doorways, this is the go-to trend. In its most extravagant state, this look is full-blown romantic heroine. However, the key to nailing the new frills is to tailor the froth to your shape. Balance out a hipskimming ruffle skirt with a fitted bodice as seen in the Simone Marulli collection, or cover upper arms with statement fluted shoulders, like the ones seen on the models at Katherine Tash.

How can the groom ensure he stands out from other members of the bridal party?

He’ll stand out if his suit fits perfectly, but another easy way is by adding a contrasting waistcoat or by introducing a jacket you can’t get off the peg, for example, with a personalised lining or lapel. Any definite styling no-nos?

Your 12-month

beauty countdown

Your big-day glow is all about the prep! Here’s how you can get a fresh, healthy, and seriously glowing complexion in time for your wedding

10-12 months to go: See a skin expert You know your skin best – but visiting a dermatologist or facialist is the best way to assess your needs. “Talking lifestyle and environmental concerns, nutrition, products and treatment advice with an expert will also you determine what – if anything – needs to change and how to get the best, long-term results in time for the big day,” suggests medical facialist Renée Lapino. Remember, it can take up to 90 days to see noticeable results, so starting a proper regime a year before allows you enough time to see the full effect. “Prep your skin adequately with regular treatments throughout the year – plan these for a Friday so you can hide away for any potential downtime and binge-watch Say Yes to the Dress,” adds Renée.

8-9 months to go: Get to know retinol Retinol is the only drug clinically proven to heal the nucleus of a cell – which means it’s capable of treating almost any kind of skin issue. “Retinol – a chemical name for vitamin A – will increase your cellular turnover rate which can help to improve skin’s firmness and tone, diminish the look of fine lines and decrease breakouts and blemishes,” adds Renée. “I recommend retinol newbies start by using a product that contains it twice a week for two weeks initially, moving up to three times a week for a further two weeks, then four times a week for four weeks until your skin has become used to it and you can apply every night – but always check with your specialist first. “It’s also best used in the evening, as your skin repairs itself more overnight.  NOVEMBER 2018 | weddingideasmag.com

6-7 months to go: Understanding nutrition A qualified nutritionist will help you on your way to choosing the best foods for your body and help you simplify food prep – just what we all need when planning a wedding, right? “Holistic nutritionist Emily Clarke, founder of Busy Bee Well (busybeewell.com), offers a six-month bride-to-be programme which teaches women how to look after their nutritional health, with plenty of meal ideas for two,” suggests Renée.

4-5 months to go: Book in with your hair stylist Want shimmering, shiny locks? Of course you do. A mask or treatment is the best way to get yourself into the glossy posse. Ask your stylist to start applying conditioning treatments around five months before – plus a flattering new cut is the perfect way to show off that gorgeous skin. Start with the deep conditioning treatments now and, if you get your hair coloured, refresh it two weeks ahead of the big day. A final trim is best around this time, too. 44

Achieving your own set of Rita Hayworth(y) curls is easier than you might think. “Prep the hair with a cocktail of mousse and oil, before blow-drying smooth using either a flat or round brush,” says award-winning stylist Jamie Stevens. “Insert a deep side parting, then wrap two-inch sections of hair in alternating directions around a oneand-a-half-inch curling tong. Once the hair has cooled, brush it out using a soft bristle brush and run oil through for shine. For the final finishing touch, make sure you line the waves into place and spray with a strong-hold hairspray.”

The catwalk-approved trend for slightly dishevelled tresses has the low-maintenance bride in mind, and Gorka Arraras, master stylist at Charles Worthington Salons, knows just how to obtain this effortless look: “Wash and blow-dry hair, using either a light mousse or volumising spray to create body at the roots. Then, carefully tong or wave the middle of the hair, leaving the roots with volume and the ends relatively straight. Next, I’d recommend shaking the hair and applying some texturising dust with your head upside down to get that tousled look. Finish with a matte hairspray to keep the texture.”

Whether relaxed and ‘undone’ or edgy and sculpted, a braided style is equal parts sleek and romantic for modern brides. And whether you go corona, Dutch or fishtail, Percy & Reed’s co-founder Adam Reed reveals the secret to the perfect plait: “On the day it’s all about preparing the hair to give the braid longevity. Use a balm to prime the hair, and mousse for volume before blasting dry with a hairdryer. You don’t want hair to be too smooth when creating the plait. Once it’s in place, use hairspray to secure before gently manipulating the braid for the look you want to achieve.”

The Bride Diaries

Harry’s negotiating skills have come in handy for bartering

Our columnist Esme Cleo beats a spiralling budget by crafting a B list and her own save-the-dates

PHOTOGRAPHY: REBECCADOUGLAS.CO.UK; ISTOCK

T

he finances have become my bugbear. What I first thought was a manageable spreadsheet has spiralled into a £10,000 overspend. How naïve we’ve been to think that 130 guests could be fed, alcoholed and entertained on our budget. So this month we’ve gone back to the drawing board, starting with the guest list. The numbers really do add up, and with 30 people off the list we would save a couple of grand. After frantic calls to our folks, we managed to shave off 20 guests. But they’re now floating in the ether. If they went on to the evening list, we’d have to cut others. We came up with the idea of a B list; if anyone on our invite list said they couldn’t come, a B-lister could take their place and be in the second wave of invites. I dreaded the thought of the B-listers ever finding out their spreadsheet status. And how much another round of invites would cost us in second-class stamps. Cutting down on numbers wasn’t enough to reign in our blowout expenses though. We had to barter. As someone that cringes at the mere thought of haggling, I pushed this onto Harry’s to-do list. I would make the initial contact and he could hardball them afterwards. Basically, I got to be the good cop, while Harry did all the graft. I turned my hand instead to my own talents. Crafting is a passion and I’m OK

at Photoshop, so I set about designing our save-the-dates. With them all printed for a mere £33, we’d made a huge saving from the £150 we’d initially set aside. Apart from completely forgetting about envelopes and then deciding to make those too. Around 70 handmade envelopes with calligraphed addresses and monogrammed wax seals later, I was ready to throw in the DIY towel. Amateur stationers have their limits. Using my own set of skills had sparked my imagination though. I had a ton of talented friends who could probably contribute to our wedding on mates’ rates. Asking was slightly awkward, but I promised that they could say no at any point, and most of them were willing to do us the favour. Other savings came from friends who shared store discount cards for the bridesmaids’ and groomsmen outfits. Turns out, if you send out desperate text messages, people respond in droves. Next was my dream dress. Coming in at 10 per cent of our budget, it seemed ridiculous that this should remain while everything else was getting the discount treatment. I visited stillwhite.co.uk in search of a preloved one, but no joy. I’ll keep looking, as I’m not willing to give up on that gown just yet. Maybe if we save enough money along the way, I can slip that in and Harry won’t notice. After all, I’ve put a lot of effort into the stationery.

HARRY’S HIGHLIGHTS… When I first suggested bartering with the suppliers, Esme looked horrified. I could tell she thought it was a terrible idea; they’d likely be offended and drop the contract all together. But as we say back home, ‘shy bairns get nowt’. For anyone not from the North East, that means if you don’t ask, you don’t get. Let’s be honest, the word wedding adds at least a 40 per cent premium, so explaining we have a budget and can’t afford an estimate is hardly rude. Bartering aside, my other to-do is putting together a wedding band. I’ve been dreaming of pulling this off since the engagement and, because of our money constraints, it’s actually going to happen. Pulling in favours from our musically talented guests, the group will be made up of my friends, family and me. There are more than enough of us to have a rotating set of players throughout the reception, so nobody will have to stay sober for too long! NOVEMBER 2018 | weddingideasmag.com

ilara and Kavi had known each other since they were children, but when Kavi moved from Sri Lanka to London with his sister to study, the pair didn’t meet again until several years later at a family wedding. “From that moment on we kept in touch through phone calls and Skype – but it meant we waited months for our first date,” recalls Dilara. “That said, it was pretty scandalous! I bunked my physics class for a romantic road trip. It didn’t take long for my parents to find out when my tutor revealed that I hadn’t shown up. I was grounded, but it didn’t stop us from seeing each other.” With Kavi in London doing a master’s and Dilara studying for her undergraduate MMBS in Sri Lanka, the couple had a long-distance relationship for two years, but it only brought them closer together. After five years of dating, Kavi popped the question at their anniversary dinner. With the stunning Galle Face Hotel in Colombo, Sri Lanka, booked, the couple started planning right away. “The ballroom at Galle Face is such a beautiful space, we wanted to keep that classical elegance. We chose an almost Grecian-inspired colour palette of black and white with olive green and touches of gold,” recalls Dilara. “The ambience our planners and stylists gave the room was incredible – they filled the room with white roses and lots of candles. They had to create the ceremony platform and backdrop from scratch, too.”  NOVEMBER 2018 | weddingideasmag.com

The four-tier cake comprised a mix of the couple’s favourite flavours – raspberry and white chocolate and coffee and cashew. It fitted the Grecian theme with gold-leaf marbling and an olive wreath topper. “It was also topped with the letter ‘A’ to represent both our surnames and the coming together of our two families,” adds Dilara. Guests also got to take home miniature glass bottles of rosemary-infused olive oil, personalised with a thank-you tag. For the couple’s traditional Sri Lankan Poruwa ceremony, Dilara wore the most incredible butter-coloured sari, designed by none other than the groom’s sister. “I was so lucky to have her design both mine and the bridesmaids’ outfits,” she recalls. “It retained a traditional feel but with a modern twist, and the jacket had a pretty neckline and three-quarter-length sleeves. For the evening, I changed into the most amazing fitted white dress that had been hand-embellished with hundreds of beads. I never wanted to take it off!” The bride accessorised with a pair of Vince Camuto heels – whisked over by a 58

friend who was attending from the States. For the ceremony, she let her sari do the talking, with just simple rose-gold earrings and necklace and fresh roses in her hair. For the reception, she upped the glitz with her sister’s Swarovski crystal earrings, a matching headpiece and bolder lip colour. Kavi also opted for two looks, with a checked three-piece suit in earthy tones for the Poruwa and a black tux for the evening. After a first dance to Frankie Valli’s Can’t Take My Eyes Off You, live band Doctor raised the roof for a memorable reception celebration. “The band had everyone out of their seats the entire night,” recalls Dilara. Plus, there were surprise performances from both the bride and groom’s siblings. “Best night ever,” Dilara smiles. After the wedding, the couple’s first stop as they embarked on married life was Sri Dalada Maligawa (or the Temple of the Tooth) in Kandy for a Buddhist blessing. “We stayed at the Santani Wellness Resort & Spa in Kandy, and then Anantara Peace Haven in Tangalle. It was so fun and relaxing, we just had the best time.”

hen Chris presented Kate with a pair of champagne-coloured Jimmy Choos for her birthday, little did she know it was with the intention that they would be the shoes she would wear on her wedding day. “I was speechless at the gift anyway, but then when he said that perhaps they needed a little accessory to go with them… I couldn’t quite believe it,” recalls Kate. The bride picked out a beautiful dress by Charlie Brear to wear with her treasured new heels. “It actually comprised two dresses – a silk bias-cut underdress and an ivory cotton leaf and lace overdress which had a deep-V back, all synched together with a silk sash belt,” says Kate. “All credit goes to the wonderful Sian of Tilly Trotter’s Brides in Leamington Spa – all my accessories were sourced here too, and the way she styled the whole outfit made it feel like they were created just for me,” she adds. Kate’s bridesmaids – best friends Charlotte and Lucy – chose two classic Twobirds dress designs in complementing pink shades and opted to wear their own shoes, giving Lucy the chance to wear her own wedding shoes again. Despite not having a set theme in mind, the couple enjoyed a beautifully laidback day with the help of venue styling guru Lauren Grey. “After numerous visits to Ikea in the early days – where we’d spend a fortune on candles – I knew it’d be more sensible to enlist the help of someone who had a more creative eye, not to mention plenty of candles!” recalls Kate. “I’d been following Lauren Grey’s Instagram for some time and after exchanging emails, she lifted a weight off my shoulders, working with our florist  NOVEMBER 2018 | weddingideasmag.com

Wildflower Illustration Co. provided the rustic stationery and each guest received a 50ml bottle of rhubarb-infused gin, which the couple had made themselves. The pièce de résistence was the three tiers of lemon drizzle and chocolate cake, handmade by Chris’s mum. “She is a wonder! It was finished with buttercream, iced flowers, and a sprig of olive foliage,” recalls Kate. A string quartet set the scene as guests enjoyed drinks and canapés on the lawns of Elmore Court. beef fillet with truffle dauphinoise and Wye Valley asparagus and a winning trio of berry desserts. Later, when the party was underway, guests tucked into local Cotswold pork or fish finger baps. “The evening entertainment was really important to us – we wanted a band who suited our style and The Chip Shop Boys fitted our criteria perfectly,” recalls Kate. “They’re Cheltenham-based – so local – and totally up our street. We wanted an indie and rock set list and they delivered! They also DJ’d for us through the night.” Having a crippling fear of flying made booking the honeymoon difficult for Kate. “But, somehow, after two relaxing days at The Painswick Hotel in the Cotswolds, we managed the 12-hour flight to Mauritius to stay at the glorious Maradiva Resort & Spa with Kuoni. It was worth every second of anxiety to get there,” recalls the bride.

Her maids looked equally beautiful in their pale blue ASOS dresses, clutching foliage-heavy bouquets of roses, clematis, daisies, astilbe and eucalyptus. Caroline’s niece, Erin, was a flowergirl. of the wine on the tables with ale kegs, which went down a treat by all accounts!” adds Caroline. So as not to detract from the natural beauty of the venue’s surroundings, the couple kept their table decorations simple, opting for wild flowers in glass jars and tealight lanterns. “Our florist, Rebecca Avery, suggested meeting at Covent Garden Flower market a year before the wedding so we could pick out the seasonal flowers that we liked,” recalls Caroline. “It was a brilliant idea and made us feel comfortable knowing that we were on the same page.” Also on the tables were Penguin Little Black Classics books for each guest, wrapped in parcel paper and tied with twine. The rustic vibe of Jimmy’s Farm was complemented by Caroline and Jack’s choice of stationery – all brown Kraft paper, twine and wooden details. The ceiling was adorned with fairylights and bunting, which were already in place at the venue. A three-tier cake comprising strawberry 68

The night that followed involved lots of dancing thanks to the resident DJ, and entertainment in the form of a magic mirror photobooth. “Everyone seemed to really enjoy it,” says the bride. “All the guests got copies of their photos and we were given an album of everyone – there were some great shots!” The day after the wedding, the couple headed to Wales, where they enjoyed a minimoon in the Brecon Beacons. “We took a week to relax, reflect and recover, then some months later we went to Japan in time for cherry blossom season. We spent almost three weeks travelling around the country, with time spent in Tokyo, Hiroshima, Kyoto and Yokohama.”

The handmade tale Gemma & Sam

A richly decorated garden reception with a rustic regional spread gave this couple’s big day festivities a homespun charm PHOTOGRAPHY: JAMES GRIST (JAMESGRISTPHOTOGRAPHY.CO.UK)

fter Sam proposed to Gemma on an epic two-week camping adventure in Sardinia, in May 2017, the couple planned their wedding in just four months, choosing to tie the knot in a church local to the bride’s parents’ home in Kent. “It seemed to take Sam forever to turn around and look at me,” smiles Gemma as she recalls walking down the aisle. “All I could focus on were his eyes and his big smile. He looked so dashing!” Driven by her dad in his vintage MG, the couple headed to Gemma’s family home for a homemade celebration with guests in the garden that was filled with lots of personal touches and shabby chic details. “It was very much a DIY day,” recalls Gemma. “The decorations were either handmade or borrowed, and one of the main centrepieces was an old pear tree in the garden that I used to play in when

I was a child. We draped it in lanterns and fairylights and arranged seating and colourful throws around it for people to sit and take in the atmosphere.” The marquee interior looked simple yet stunning, with flowers arranged by Annette Box of local florist The Box Tree Co. “Not only did she spend time picking out flowers to fit the pastel colour theme,

but she also arranged the most incredible hanging installation down the centre of the marquee, and draped flowers and lanterns from an old wooden ladder,” adds Gemma. The couple’s cake was a design purchased from Marks & Spencer, which florist Annette added fresh flowers to. Candelabra, pine cone place settings and chiavari chairs gave the right balance of elegant and rustic. The couple chose to forgo favours in place of donations to the victims of Hurricane Irma, which had hit the British Virgin Islands earlier that month. In keeping with the day’s relaxed vibe, guests dined on a locally sourced feast of pork pies and chutneys, goats’ cheese and tomato tartlets, chicken liver pâté and homemade bread, and duck confit. “Dessert was more of a help-yourself affair, with strawberries and cream, miniature gypsy tarts, lemon drizzle cake and cheese and biscuits,” adds Gemma.  NOVEMBER 2018 | weddingideasmag.com

“Planning our wedding in only four months meant we didn’t have time to overthink things – and we were happy to get stuck into a DIY day.” With an afternoon of eating and drinking in the Kent sunshine, the party got underway with acoustic guitarist Jonny Hepbir, followed by a local band for the evening festivities. After 11pm, the couple and their guests enjoyed a silent disco! “It was a first for many of our guests and so much fun,” says Gemma. The bride recalls the moment she picked out her Maggie Sottero gown at Brides Dress Revisited in Tunbridge Wells: “I figured early on that any white dress would make me feel the part, but this one really made me feel special. The most important thing for me was that I felt comfortable and 72

able to move, and this was light, chic and had the most stunning detail.” The dress was made up of two components – an ivory lace sheath worn over a satin slip dress.

It had a low V-shaped back and button detailing, and Gemma teamed it with a lace-edged veil. Her young bridesmaids followed her up the aisle in sparkly pink dresses from Monsoon. The day was a beautiful celebration of love from start to finish, but the one moment that stands out in the couple’s minds was just after the ceremony. “I found out that morning that I was pregnant, after trying for three years,” smiles Gemma. “I told Sam outside the church after the ceremony by handing him the positive pregnancy test inside a box. It was a really special moment.”

A FINE ROMANCE Jennifer & Jack

Pretty personal touches gave this country-house wedding a contemporary feel PHOTOGRAPHY: ELLA VIOLET (ELLAVIOLETPHOTOGRAPHY.COM)

I

’d been dreaming about wedding dresses long before getting engaged and would spend hours – probably days – poring over pictures in magazines and on the internet,” recalls Jennifer. “I’m incredibly fussy, so imagine how flabbergasted we all were when I found my dress in the very first shop we visited!” she laughs. Jennifer’s gown was a White Rose Bridal design, bought from Colchester boutique Abigail’s Collection. “What’s great about this range is that you can combine different elements from different dresses to create your desired style. I liked the bottom of one dress and the top of another and finding out they could be combined was the perfect solution. I also chose to add a lace overlay with short sleeves as I didn’t feel like a strapless style suited me. “Once the dress was ordered, it was a long wait and the doubts started to creep in because I hadn’t actually tried on ‘my’

dress. Fortunately, as soon as I went for my first fitting, all doubts disappeared.” A veil, also from Abigail’s Collection, a pair of Kate Spade heels, a pair of drop earrings and a bracelet completed Jennifer’s look. Her team of bridesmaids – all fellow teacher friends (“organisation of the day was never going to be in doubt!”) – wore full-length chiffon gowns in purple with sparkly gold Kurt Geiger heels. The girls

all had their hair and make-up taken care of on the morning of the wedding, which helped them relax and enjoy the gettingready process without worry. “I had a trial for both, so it meant I had no stress about how my hair and make-up would look because I’d seen it all before,” Jennifer adds. Primed and ready to go, Jennifer and her maids headed downstairs to Braxted Park’s Orangery. A string quartet played in the background as guests arrived, setting the scene for a tranquil and elegant countryhouse celebration. “We wanted to keep the whole feel classic and beautiful, in keeping with the stately style of Braxted Park,” recalls Jennifer. “Purple and gold worked well with the setting and I felt it brought an element of glamour to the décor – it also tied in with the beautiful flowers that were blooming in the grounds over the summer. In the evening, a barbecue was served in between band sets, in the surroundings of the walled gardens. On the tables were low flower arrangements comprising mercury glass vases and bottles filled with flowers, interspersed with tealights and candles. Another personal feature of decoration was the photo table which showcased old snaps of the couple’s parents and grandparents

on their wedding days. To make the most of the venue’s stunning grounds, the couple hired garden games to entertain their guests of all ages. Jack was put in charge of the background music, hooking his playlist up to the indoor and outdoor speakers to add to the chilled vibe. In the evening, it was function band Electric Ocean who took to the stage, entertaining everyone with three spectacular sets. “They also played a brilliant version of Everlong by the Foo Fighters for our first dance. It was a great way to kickstart the party,” adds Jennifer. “They had everyone on the floor all night long.” NOVEMBER 2018 | weddingideasmag.com

ave popped the question to Margo in Italy – the couple’s last European holiday before moving back to Australia, where they first met. “We were walking around the old town of Materra, in Basilicata, and Dave got down on one knee with the most beautiful ring from Raphael in Hatton Garden,” recalls Margo. “He’d done the traditional thing and asked my parents beforehand. I remember feeling so overwhelmed, I couldn’t stop laughing! We had a beautiful dinner that night in a cave restaurant built into the cliff of a seaside village. It was incredibly beautiful.” The couple opted for a stylish black-tie affair, which they hosted at the Centennial Vineyards in New South Wales. “My sister is a celebrant and she married us in the gardens, which made the whole ceremony extra special,” says Margo. At the end of the aisle were two plinths filled with white roses and foliage, which were later brought inside for the evening’s reception. “My family heritage is Irish, so two good

friends from school read out an Irish blessing. I still can’t believe I managed to get through the vows without shedding a single tear!” After the ceremony, Margo, Dave and their guests enjoyed champagne and oysters out on the terrace before heading inside for dinner. The reception space was decked out with beautiful foliage, draped along the centre of the tables and from the beams. “The room had a big fireplace at the rear where we placed old family photos, there were three candelabra draped in greenery, and on the tables were mini bottles of limoncello for our guests – in a little nod to where we had got engaged,”

Top tip “You don’t need all the bells and whistles – as long as you have good music, good food and good wine, all your guests will be happy!”

adds Margo. The bride also kept her look classically chic, choosing a gorgeous, slim-fitting Pronovias gown made with silk crepe. “It was simple at the front and had a low back lined with lace – it’s a dress that will stand the test of time and that’s exactly what I wanted,” she recalls. Margo also wore a veil, a pair of navy suede Kurt Geiger heels and diamond earrings. Her bridesmaids coordinated with her style perfectly in their elegant navy blue dresses and nude-coloured sandals. “As a thank you, I gifted them each a rose gold necklace monogrammed with their initial, which they also wore on the day,” adds Margo. The younger bridesmaids – nieces Kate and Angele – wore handmade dresses in a light peachy pink hue. It was the couple’s live band of choice – the Baker Boys Band – who got the party underway with guitars, bongos, bass, saxophone and drums. “Our guests loved them!” recalls Margo. “They played all the old-school favourites.

“Our first dance was to Vance Joy’s Riptide. We decide to have dance lessons before the wedding and so we pulled off a great little sequence before inviting everyone else to join in. I love folk music and also wanted to pick something upbeat to get our guests in the mood for a dance and celebration.” After the wedding, the newlyweds jetted off to South Africa for a safari in Kruger National Park, before enjoying hiking, wine tours and even a friend’s wedding. “We stayed at Mala Mala Game Reserve, which was phenomenal – we saw the Big Five within 24 hours!” recalls Margo. “Then we went on to Drakensberg National Park and did some hiking to the world’s second highest waterfall. After the wedding, we moved on to the Garden Route, where we stayed in a treehouse with a spa bath on the balcony. We met up with friends in Cape Town, and finally ended up in Franschhoek, where we had some of the most epic food and wine. It was an incredible two weeks.” NOVEMBER 2018 | weddingideasmag.com

aking inspiration from both her own safari trip (“hearing lion roars echoing into the night is just magical”) and the film Out of Africa, photographer Jennifer Shoubridge brought early 20th century details and the crisp linen tones of savanna living together for an atmospheric alfresco bridal shoot. To transfer the spirit of the Serengeti to Devon’s Deer Park, styling was kept to minimum, with wicker chairs, vintage trunks and rattan chargers. As for the couple’s wedding look, they embody 1900s-explorer elegance with a twist. reedom, the new in-house dress range from Stratford-upon-Avon’s Boho Bride boutique, is aimed at “women who dare to be different and have a clear sense of their own style; they’re fun, sophisticated and modern,” explains director Lynette Turner. Desiring a quirky bohemian shoot location that would enliven the collection’s diaphanous layers, flowing skirts and tactile laces, she opted for the bucolic idyll of Norton Grounds in the Cotswolds, which is known for hosting alfresco marquee and tipi weddings. The free-spirited feel continued with a multi-textured trailing bouquet, which featured David Austin Juliet roses, Turkish Delight spray roses, Blanchette spray roses, carnations, listhianthus, ammi daucus carota, delphiniums and waxflower in an array of graduating pinks and deep green. To complement the dresses’ contemporary details, rose gold cutlery, bloom-filled terrariums, laser-cut place cards and a honeycomb table plan brought the reception styling together. 

How they did it… Ever wondered what the wedding experts would choose for their own big day? We find out how five industry insiders said ‘I do’

THE FLORIST

Victoria, 38, from London owns Foxgloves & Glory. She married Joe in the summer of 2017. “We had two wedding ceremonies; a legal wedding at Chelsea Town Hall followed by a humanist ceremony in a marquee at my parent’s farm in Northamptonshire. As a florist, I knew exactly what to order months in advance, and I knew the costings too. I also foraged a lot of foliage from the farm which saved us so much money. “For the London wedding I wanted rich jewel tones to line the dinner table, while for the marquee my vision was seasonal British flowers and small plants in vintage terracotta pots. The marquee colour palette

was based around my favorite rose, Evelyn, which is a billowy apricot-coloured bloom. “I picked whatever my local British suppliers grew: garden roses, metre-long trails of honeysuckle, herbs – rosemary, mint and basil, cosmos, verbena, scented geraniums, eremurus and nasturtiums. The list was endless: a florist’s dream! “There were flowers alongside long runners of vintage bottles and cut glass on the trestle tables. There were six huge arrangements on the circular bar and posies on the low tables, plus a dedicated headdress station for guests to make their own flower crowns.” @foxglovesandglory

THE MAKE-UP ARTIST

Kate, 28, specialises in bridal make-up for Blow Ltd. She married Matt in 2017, in the Cotswolds. “For me, it was all about fresh, simple skin. Nothing too heavy: just a really bright pop of blush, groomed brows, definition on the eyes, a slick of waterproof mascara and a neutral lip just a little darker than my natural lip colour. I wanted to look like me at my very best. “My skin’s oily around my T-zone, so I made sure my Nars foundation was oil-free and I used a Bobbi Brown brow powder instead of a pencil for softer definition. I nearly went for a plum lip, which I don’t normally wear: I advise brides against this all the time! Luckily, I changed my mind. “I didn’t go for facials, but I did invest more in my skincare routine: regular face masks and a Clarisonic cleansing brush. I also used a gradual self-tanner rather than a spray tan for a more natural look.” @blowltd NOVEMBER 2018 | weddingideasmag.com

THE DRESS DESIGNER

THE EVENT PLANNER

Gemma, 36, is head of private group events at Drake & Morgan. She married Scott in August 2017, in the Essex countryside. “I’m looking after more than 100 weddings this year but I was a relaxed bride for my own. In fact, I found out I was pregnant after we’d booked the venue, so we had a 10-month-old on the big day! “Before we did anything else, we made a list of what mattered to us. We wanted an outdoor ceremony and a great band. “The venue we picked had a pagoda where we could get married. But vitally, if it rained, there was a light, spacious

conservatory. Having both options meant no stressing about the weather! One of my husband’s customers is in a band he loves, so we booked them for the evening. “I planned everything in a notebook I’d bought especially. But until we had chosen a venue, I didn’t do much. as your venue shapes your other decisions. Although our budget wasn’t limitless, I didn’t look at prices until i’d seen venues, so as not to write anything off. I believe if you find the venue for you, you’ll find a way to make it happen.” @drakeandmorgan

THE PHOTOGRAPHER

Cornwall-based freelance photographer, Laura, 46, married husband Paul in 2003. “I’m quite traditional and wanted the photos to capture a sense of the day, so my wedding photography was hugely important to me. Saying that, I booked someone who had never shot a wedding before! I was just starting out in my career after completing a degree and he was producing great images that excited me. “I didn’t talk to anyone else. In those days, it wasn’t unusual to book people on word of mouth. I paid him about £1,000 – a lot back then. “Luckily, he took some lovely shots. I met him the night before to show him the church, which was near my parents’ house. He took a few of me at the hairdresser, and ceremony and first dance snaps. His style was reportage, so I didn’t have many group shots. It fitted with the simple, laidback style of our wedding.” @lashmanphoto 94

weddingideasmag.com | NOVEMBER 2018

“My mum wore an off-the-shoulder wedding dress in the 1970s, and I always knew I wanted a similar silhouette. My sister and I used to model our own dresses when we started, so I knew the fit I wanted. I was inspired by the fabric first, which was 100 per cent silk. As I sketched, these long flowing sleeves appeared, like a dream! “We added in some unique features along the way. I wanted my dress to feel like a strapless gown that would stay up on its own. So we added boning and a little more structure to make the sleeves lie properly, so I didn’t have to pull them up all day. The slit at the front was a last-minute decision to make the dress more free-flowing. Then we added a crazy train – it’s the one time in your life you can have all that drama! “My gown was fully lined in satin which meant no matter how sweaty I got, I wasn’t bothered. The French bustle – which I always encourage brides to have – meant I could make the most of the dancefloor. “Only my mum and sister saw my dress beforehand. I didn’t want to get bogged down in opinions or details. That’s what I recommend to my brides. Trends are constantly changing, but stick to what you feel like yourself in.” Ashley’s wedding dress is a modified version of a dress that will be included in the Daydream collection, launching October 2018. @daughtersofsimone

reland’s boundless natural beauty and more specifically, the stunning evergreen forest and charming river walk that surround Powerscourt Hotel, inspired Nadia Wood of Amulet Events to create a simple yet impactful bridal shoot setting in a clearing overlooking a babbling stream in the idyllic County Wicklow spot. “To evoke a sense of romance in this most tranquil of places, we opted for an elegant theme with a chaise longue, chandelier and glowing candlelit lanterns,” says Nadia. Referring to the fashion aspect of the shoot, she adds: “Adding further wonder to this mythical scene, our model epitomised traditional celtic beauty in a winsome twotone gown.” The final shots of the day, which captured the couple at the foot of the magnificent Powerscourt waterfall, embodied the awesome power and pure serenity of both nature and love.  NOVEMBER 2018 | weddingideasmag.com

A stylish send off Forget the ‘girls on tour’ tees and embarrassing drinking games: the hen party has a had a well-overdue makeover. Steer your girlfriends towards one of these… A bit of all white From December, you can achieve the dream girls’ night in with The White Company and London’s Lanesborough Club’s White Night In. Bookable for groups of five or less, the evening starts with a champagne welcome from a butler, before slipping into robes for the spa. Once zen is restored, you’ll sit down to a Michelinstarred dinner. Next, the private screening commences, with therapists on hand for treatments and the aforementioned butler, who’ll dispense gourmet nibbles and top-ups. Even a late-night Uber X won’t kill the five-star buzz, as the spoiling concludes with a chauffeur ride home. lanesboroughclubandspa.com

After months of spiralling wedmin and frayed fitting-room tempers, what better start could there be to a harmonious hen weekend? Nestled in the rural Vale of Belvoir, the pampering outpost also offers an array of alcohol-free beauty treatments, including microblading, massages and facials. thelittleretreatnottingham.co.uk

A world away from the packed-out cocktail bars of a typical hen night, the session kicks off with a relaxed drinks reception and the invitation to indulge in unlimited macarons (and beverages) throughout the day. After sampling the treats, you’ll learn how to bake them, and create your own signature tipple with the help of expert mixologists. Fair isle

Maxine Briggs discovers an alternative island paradise in the stunning Scottish Highlands

H

owever much I travel, the Scottish Highlands’ west coast is still, for me, one of the most romantic places in the world. It may not be as hot as a Pacific island, but the Isle of Eriska Hotel, nestled on its own 300-acre private island, has an altogether different kind of warmth. Quintessentially Scottish, the main hotel has wood-panelled walls and inviting sofas. Snuggling up in front of the roaring fire to enjoy a wee dram of whisky from the well-stocked bar is a real treat, as is the restaurant’s locally sourced menu, featuring amazing salmon, spider crab and venison. The Isle of Eriska is licensed for civil ceremonies, and weddings can be held in the main hotel or in the garden. It’s also possible to hire the hotel and island for up

to 62 guests. And naturally, you can have your very own Scottish piper. There are 16 bedrooms in the main house, five spa suites in the gardens, two garden cottages for families and six hilltop reserves. Bedrooms in the main house have a lovely rustic feel, combining luxury fabrics with contemporary designs. For a more modern experience, you can stay in one of the reserves overlooking the serene Loch Creran, with the island of Lismore beyond. Each reserve comes with a fireplace and hot tub – the perfect spot to take in the vista with a glass of fizz. On our second night, we cosy up together on the terrace recliners for romantic stargazing. For further indulgence, sample the Stables Spa’s swimming pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi. Using Ishga and ESPA products, its philosophy is about connecting with the peace of the region. If you’d like a little more activity there’s a nine-hole golf course, but if you’d prefer an uninterrupted walk, you can cover the whole island in three hours: woods, heathland, peat fields and coastline. Along the way you’ll see an abundance of birdlife and, if you’re lucky, otters and grey seals, as well as urchins and starfish on the loch bed. From the Deck restaurant’s terrace, it’s even possible to spot a Golden Eagle hovering over the fifth hole. For room rates, visit eriska-hotel.co.uk

Getting there As we were travelling up from London, we decided to go in style and booked a twin first-class room on the Caledonian Sleeper – known as The Deerstalker! The dinky single cabins are opened up with a connecting door to form one room, with a light breakfast delivered to your cabin. Our evening train hurtled through the night towards Fort William. The real treat was lying in bed at first light and watching the view through the window as we ambled our way across the Trossachs, with the morning sunshine highlighting a vivid highland canvas of tough granite peaks, snow-capped mountains and deer jumping through gullies and racing across the heather as the train passed.
